Students will learn how to abandon a debilitating fixed mindset in favor of a growth mindset, leading to success in areas they once considered too difficult. The study and learning strategies students often bring to college are often insufficient to help them succeed at the university level. Particularly in challenging STEM courses, students can't simply memorize or cram their way to a good grade. This workshop will focus on the popular learning strategies to avoid, as well as the top three strategies you don't know but are shown by research to be the most effective for long-term learning.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Department of English Language and Literature

Interested in spending spring term in the woods, reading, writing, and climbing mountains—AND getting nine upper-level credits of English?? Check out the New England Literature Program!

After lots of conversations and planning, we’ve been approved to have a real, in-person NELP this spring! There will be some relatively small changes to how we do things (some of which we’re still figuring out), and NELP students will need to commit to pre-program COVID testing and a rigorous self-quarantine so that when we’re all out in New England together, we can be guaranteed that our little community in the woods will be a safe, COVID-free bubble, basically cut off from the rest of the world. If you have questions about what NELP is exactly—and what has made it such a popular program over the years—or questions about how NELP will work this spring, please join us on Friday, February 19 at 5:00 pm for a Informational Zoom meeting where you’ll hear from some recent NELP students about their experiences in the program and have all your questions answered.

We often frame poster presentations at academic conferences and symposia as “easier” and less high-stakes than presenting a paper or participating in a panel, but poster presentations are about 10% presenting and 90% interacting with one’s “audience” of a few people crowded around the poster in a busy, noisy conference space. With more virtual conferences, we also need to be ready for videoconference visitors. Finally, over the past year, poster presenters have also been asked to record brief video presentations open to conference attendees over several days or weeks. Each of these modes of communication presents unique challenges and opportunities. In this workshop, we will not be working on poster design. Instead, we’ll work on strategies for fluent communication with visitors to your poster, whether in-person or virtual. If you have a poster presentation coming up, be ready to share a draft image of your poster so that you can practice taking questions from others at the workshop. Otherwise, come ready to practice formulating and responding to typical question types in poster presentations.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Tauber Institute for Global Operations

Once again, the Tauber Institute, in conjunction with the International Project Management Association (IPMA), is sponsoring a Project Management certification class and exam for graduate business and engineering students and staff.

In order to participate, you will need to reflect upon a project management experience (for example: a work project, an engineering design experience/senior capstone, Ross' MAP project, Tauber team project, etc). If you cannot make it to the classes (due to project travel, MAP, or other another class), the sessions will be recorded. Homework (mastery verification) will be required after each session.

The cost to an individual to take the exam is normally $595, however, Tauber is offering the exam at a substantial discount to non-Tauber students:
$500 for U-M alumni or public
$400 for U-M students, U-M employees, or Tauber alumni
$200 for Tauber Institute students

Certification is valid for 5 years. Three certification classes will be taught by Professor Eric Svaan on the following dates:

Sunday, March 21 (noon - 4:30 pm)
Sunday, March 28 (noon - 4:30 pm)
Sunday, April 18 (noon - 4:30 pm)

The certification exam, administered by IPMA-USA is scheduled for May 12, 2021 (11:00 am) virtually. Successfully passing the exam will yield IPMA's Level D certification (Certified Project Management Associate).

Since 2013, all students who have taken the exam have passed!

Project Management is a powerful skill set to have in your toolbox as you look for full-time employment!

REGISTRATION: Please register through iMpact by clicking here:
https://www.bus.umich.edu/Conferences/Project-Management-Certification-2021/Default.aspx

NOTE: The non-refundable fees:
$500 for non-Tauber students, U-M alumni, or public
$400 for U-M students, U-M employees, or Tauber alumni
$200 for Tauber Institute students

HOSTED BY: Tauber Institute for Global Operations. For questions about this event, please contact tauberinstitute@umich.edu or visit tauber.umich.edu.

What is IPMA Level D® (Certified Project Management Associate)? The IPMA Level D is an internationally recognized entry-level qualification in the area of project management. This designation, which demonstrates the individual's ability to understand the basics of project management, is similar to the exam-oriented, knowledge-based certifications of other major Project Management associations. For many, Level D® is the first step towards a professional project or program manager role. It is the first step in a sequence (C, B and A) to be earned by demonstration of success in larger PM responsibility sets.

It’s the end of the semester and CEW+ is providing a virtual community space to help you finish the year off strong and to prepare to make the most of your study days. CEW+ invites students to drop in and take advantage of our virtual study space and intentional activities designed to help you destress and focus. Feel free to join us for the whole event, or come and go as works best for you. Our study space provides an opportunity to study independently but not in isolation.

Join us to connect with other students, enhance academic planning skills, learn about the academic benefits of good nutrition, and practice mindfulness meditation. There will also be a social networking opportunity to meet other students virtually.

Feel free to drop in to take advantage of the goal-setting and planning session. CEW+ is here to support you! Encourage your friends to study together virtually, or just hang out and meet other students from different departments in a relaxing and welcoming space.

This program will be followed by the CEW+ Inspire Midweek Mindfulness Guided Sit from 12:15 - 12:45 pm -  we hope you will join if it interests you. Click here to RSVP separately for the Zoom link: https://umich.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJUtcumtpzIoHNdRoCz-lPKz9X7fb-Jp844o

CGIS Winter Advising (May 19, 2021 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/83938 83938-21619171@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, May 19, 2021 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Center for Global and Intercultural Study

As studying abroad becomes more of a possibility for U-M students, particularly for Winter 2022, CGIS will be offering a 2-day Winter Advising event where students can learn more about major-specific programs such as programs in the environment, pre-health, and public health and interest-specific program sessions such as studying abroad in the UK and English-Taught programs in Asia to name few. The LSA Scholarship Office and the Office of Financial Aid will join us on May 20th to help answer questions you may have on funding your semester program abroad as well as walking you through the application process! First Step sessions will be offered each day of the event as well. Each info session will be interactive. Each session will offer an opportunity to interact with advisors and address questions or concerns you may have regarding study abroad. To get a general idea of participation, please RSVP below and select info sessions that you'd be interested in. We'll send you a Zoom link as we get closer to the event!

DISCLAIMER: With each passing term, a small yet increasing number of our programs seem to offer the possibility of receiving students, so CGIS proceeded with very cautious optimism that students will be able to study abroad in the coming academic year. CGIS and the University of Michigan continue to closely monitor the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) situation as it develops worldwide. Parents and other concerned parties who would like to receive this information should ask their students to share the updates with them. Students planning to participate in CGIS programs worldwide are advised to continue to closely monitor the latest developments and to adhere to any national and international public health directives issued by their host country or institution. CGIS will contact students who have opened or submitted an application to a CGIS program if and when updates are available.
