Organized By: LSA Technology Services

You’ve heard about “accessibility,” but do you know what it means for your project? This workshop will teach you how to make your project — both its products and processes — accessible to all. You will learn principles, standards, and techniques for developing digital projects that are equitably accessible to people with a range of abilities/disabilities, technologies, and backgrounds. For grants that require projects to meet accessibility guidelines, you will learn to develop an accessibility plan for applications. As a result of this workshop, participants will understand how and why accessibility matters in digital projects, and will have resources to use and refer back to as projects progress.

Note: This workshop will be held on Zoom. You will receive a reminder and a Zoom link one hour before the workshop.

About the Digital Scholarship 101 workshop series:
This series of workshops helps scholars avoid outdated projects, unpreserved knowledge, uncredited labor, and privacy or consent issues by emphasizing process in the project life cycle. Workshop participants learn how to conceptualize the life cycle of a project using human-centered design and backwards modelling when planning their projects to better understand how to version, archive, and preserve their research projects. Throughout the series, thematic questions around sustainability, preservation, accessibility, privacy, consent, grant requirements, and teaching with research will be examined. We encourage you to come with a project in mind and bring materials if available, but is not required to attend.

The Egalitarian Metropolis: Towards an Inclusive Recovery for Detroit

The Great Black Migration to Detroit occurred at the height of the city’s industrial dominance, and yet the result was a deeply divided metropolis where almost all the benefits of subsequent industrial restructuring flowed to white suburbanites and almost all the costs were borne by Black city residents. Today’s Detroit might be more challenged economically, yet paradoxically the chances for an inclusive recovery and a more egalitarian metropolis might be greater. Detroit and Detroit-like cities have the possibility of restructuring to deliver greater equity for their residents than other metros hampered by high housing costs and issues associated with infrastructure, transportation, and education, among other pressing concerns. But can Detroit overcome its racial and economic divisions to become a more egalitarian metropolis?

Participants will learn:
1. What alt text is, why it is important, and who benefits from it.
2. Image types that are not accessible and workarounds.
3. How to craft effective alt text for images based upon the image type and function.
4. Best practices for describing diverse people and situations depicted in images in an inclusive way.
5. How to add alt text to images in Word, Google Docs, PowerPoint, and Google Slides.

Audience:

Neurodiversity in the Workplace (November 17, 2023 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/114147 114147-21832396@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, November 17, 2023 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: LSA Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Neurodiversity is the new hot topic in the realm of disability inclusion and accessibility—and with good reason. A significant percentage of people are now recognized as having neurotypes that are not well supported by societal norms and our collective understanding of how to communicate across and support neurodiversity is still developing. Fortunately researchers, educators, and advocates who identify as neurodivergent are contributing to a growing body of best practices.

Join the LSA Faculty & Staff Disability Navigators to learn about neurodiversity and how we can all start creating more neuroinclusive workplaces.

Participants will:
1. Understand what neurodiversity is and how the concept has evolved over time.
2. Reflect on the ways neurodiversity shapes our experiences, behaviors, aptitudes, and understanding of the world.
3. Gain insight into how contemporary work norms can exclude and create barriers for a range of neurotypes.
4. Explore neuroinclusive practices we can proactively integrate into our workplaces.
5. Become familiar with relevant resources for LSA employees.

Audience: This is a beginner-level workshop open to any LSA employee, including our student employees. LSA employees receive priority access, so while external guests are welcome to register they will be waitlisted and moved off the waitlist as space allows.

Format:
This workshop will be conducted virtually on Zoom. Camera use will be optional. Auto-captioning will be enabled and slides will be shared during and following the workshop. Discussion will be facilitated via the chat function and interested participants will be invited to unmute themselves. There will be time for questions and participants will have the option to submit anonymously via the Q&A function. This session will not be recorded.

As we shift from print to digital documents in the workplace, it's important to ensure readers and contributors can actually access the content. If document users include individuals who are color blind, use assistive technologies, or process information differently, will they be able to effectively engage with the content?

This workshop will focus on best practices for creating digital documents that are more user-friendly and accessible. In addition to demonstrations, there will be opportunities to apply what you are learning in real time.

Participants will learn about:
1. The benefit of accessible documents and how specific features support diverse users.
2. How to build more accessible documents in Microsoft Word and Google Docs.
3. Tools to assist with document accessibility.
4. Resources to deepen knowledge on document accessibility.
