DESIGNING A DREAM: THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE “BLUE DREAM” HOUSE BY DS+R (September 21, 2023 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/111190 111190-21826181@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, September 21, 2023 6:00pm
Location: Walgreen Drama Center
Organized By: A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning

As the brainchild of collectors Julie Reyes Taubman and Robert Taubman, Blue Dream is an extraordinary house designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) that sought to renew the legacy of modernist architecture and art in the Hamptons. In advance of the launch of the eponymous book published by DelMonico Books, architecture critic Paul Goldberger will discuss the complex design process behind Blue Dream with DS+R partner Charles Renfro and Associate Principal Holly Deichmann. The panel discussion will offer insights into how Blue Dream reinterprets organic architecture for the 21st century, and stands as a striking addition to the roster of architecturally ambitious modernist houses on Long Island.

Paul Goldberger is a Contributing Editor at Vanity Fair. From 1997 through 2011, he served as the Architecture Critic for The New Yorker, where he wrote the magazine’s celebrated “Sky Line” column. He is the author of numerous books, including BALLPARK: Baseball in the American City, Building Art: The Life and Work of Frank Gehry, Building with History, Why Architecture Matters, Building Up and Tearing Down, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, and DUMBO: The Making of a Neighborhood and the Rebirth of Brooklyn. He also holds the Joseph Urban Chair in Design and Architecture at The New School in New York City and was formerly Dean of the Parsons School of Design at The New School.

He began his career at The New York Times, where in 1984 his architecture criticism was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Distinguished Criticism. In 2012 he received the Vincent Scully Prize from the National Building Museum in recognition of the influence his writing has had on the public’s understanding of architecture. In 2017, he received the Award in Architecture of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, which called him “the doyen of American architectural critics.”

Charles Renfro joined Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) in 1997 and became a Partner in 2004. He was the Partner-in-Charge of Blue Dream, leading the complex design process. He led the design and construction of the studio’s first concert hall outside of the US – The Tianjin Juilliard School in China – as well as the studio’s first public park outside of the US – Zaryadye Park in Moscow. Charles has also led the design of much of DS+R’s academic portfolio, with projects completed at Stanford University, UC Berkeley, Brown University, the University of Chicago, and the recently completed Columbia Business School. Charles is also leading the design of two projects in his native Texas: the renovation of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Kalita Humphreys Theater in Dallas, and Sarofim Hall, a new home for Rice University’s Visual Arts department in Houston. Charles is a board member of BOFFO, a nonprofit organization that supports the work of queer LGBTQ+ BIPOC artists and designers. He has twice been recognized with the “Out100” list, and also distinguished as a notable LGBTQ leader by Crain’s New York Business. He is a faculty member of the School of Visual Arts.

Holly Deichmann is an Associate Principal at Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R). She was the Project Director for Blue Dream, overseeing the complex design process alongside Partner-in-Charge Charles Renfro. She was also the Project Architect of the United States Olympic & Paralympic Museum in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and the Project Director for the adjoining Park Union Bridge, a curved steel structure connecting the museum campus to the adjacent America the Beautiful Park. Holly was also the Project Director for the recently-completed Susan Wakil Health Building at the University of Sydney in Australia. She is currently the Project Director for the New Museum of Transport in Budapest, a new home for the museum located on the brownfield site of a former train repair facility.

How to Flourish” is a series of workshops hosted by Trotter Multicultural Center to help incoming historically marginalized undergraduate and graduate students “flourish” by exploring the different dimensions of the Wolverine Wellness Wheel. Using the Wellness Wheel model developed by the University Health Service's Wolverine Wellness program, we discuss the importance of holistic well-being while acknowledging how a student’s identity, culture, and heritage can affect their wellness experience. Using interactive workshop-based modules with wellness experts from on and off-campus, students will have access to tools, resources, and knowledge that support their holistic well-being at the University of Michigan and beyond.

In the late 1960s, Muhammad Speaks was the most circulated Black newspaper in America. It was often associated with the fiery images and ominous messaging of its front pages. Far more than a sensationalist tabloid, the paper stood out in Black communities for its grassroots investigative journalism and critique of structural racism. It also served as an important source of information for racial justice organizations, like CORE and the NAACP, as well as those surveilling Black communities such as the FBI and the KKK. (Illustration by Eugene Majied, Muhammad Speaks, April 12, 1968, p. 7.)

This event is offered as an in-person event in the Pond Room in the Michigan Union. It will also be available virtually on Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/98413159103, meeting ID number 984 1315 9103, passcode 322598.

Khuram Hussain is Vice President for Equity and Inclusion and Associate Professor of Education Studies at Middlebury College. He holds a Ph.D. in Cultural Foundations of Education from Syracuse University, where he was awarded the All-University Dissertation Prize. In addition to his DEI work, he teaches classes that explore social movements for racial justice in schools and the pedagogy of democratic, multicultural classrooms.

In the ever-evolving digital landscape, the threats to personal security and privacy are mounting, with doxxing emerging as a critical concern. Join experts from the fields of information and law in our informative and engaging panel discussion, "Demystifying Doxxing." Food will be provided.

Our multidisciplinary panel will delve deep into the menacing phenomenon of doxxing, laying bare its definition, characteristics, and the motivations behind it. They will tackle the complex legal implications, bringing you up to speed with the current framework, laws, potential legal actions, and their limitations in dealing with issues related to doxxing.

We are welcoming in School of Information faculty member Dr. Sarita Schoenebeck. As the Director of Living Online Lab some of her current projects are promoting justice for targets of online harassment, measuring dark patterns in design and algorithms, and supporting identity and privacy on social media.

We are also excited to bring Douglas E. Lewis, Director of Student Legal Services and Attorney. Mr. Lewis’ area of legal expertise at SLS is criminal defense, consumer, and real estate. He is also very active in his community as a member of the State Bar of Michigan, the Washtenaw County Bar Association, and the Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan.

Organized By: Wallace House Center for Journalists

Award-winning journalist Kara Swisher has interviewed nearly every consequential innovator and tech entrepreneur working today. Her new memoir, "Burn Book: A Tech Love Story," is an insider's tale of success, failure, hubris and optimism. As Detroit gains influence in technology and the EV revolution, Swisher sits down with Mary Barra, chair and CEO of General Motors, to discuss her new book and explore the dynamic interplay of legacy companies, innovation, strategic bets on the future, and tech's potential to solve problems and not just create them.

Swisher’s newly released book, “Burn Book,” will be available for purchase at the event. The author will stay for a short book signing after the program.

About Kara Swisher
Kara Swisher is the host of the podcast “On with Kara Swisher” and the cohost of the “Pivot” podcast with Scott Galloway, both distributed by New York magazine. She was also the co-founder and editor-at-large of Recode, host of the Recode Decode podcast, and co-executive producer of the Code conference. She was a former contributing opinion writer for The New York Times and host of its “Sway” podcast and has also worked for The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post. “Burn Book: A Tech Love Story” is her third book.

About Mary Barra
Mary Barra is Chair and Chief Executive Officer of General Motors. Under Barra’s leadership, GM envisions a world with zero crashes, zero emissions, and zero congestion. Prior to becoming CEO, Barra served as GM executive vice president, Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain, and as senior vice president, Global Product Development. In these roles, Barra and her teams were responsible for the design, engineering and quality of GM vehicle launches worldwide.

Location: Art and Architecture Building
Organized By: A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning

WE START WITH THE THINGS WE FIND: a LOT-EK film screening and talk-back event with director Thomas Piper and designers Ada Tolla and Giuseppe Lignano.

Look at things differently. LOT-EK’s inspirational art and architectural work reconsiders our modern economy through the icon of globalization, the shipping container.

If we pay enough attention to the ordinary, we see the extraordinary. The shipping container is an accidental icon of our modern age: the eight-foot-by-forty-foot corrugated steel box that brings the world to our doorstep. It brings all our hearts’ desires’, available for purchase. And it brings us complicity in the global supply chains, and all the economic, ecological, technological, and political systems that forge those chains, as those great container ships link maker and user, buyer and seller, China and America together across the vast distances of the lawless sea. The design studio LOT-EK is a visionary practice at the intersection of art and architecture, that specializes in upcycling, which is the art and science of repurposing, remaking, rethinking, reimagining. Of using old things in new ways. The shipping container is the thing that has captured their imagination for over a quarter-century: they have remade containers into homes, schools, galleries, libraries, and more. With hundreds of millions of obsolete and unused containers around the world, this is a new and necessary architecture of the future, that repairs and regenerates the unnatural environment that we have inherited from the past.

WE START WITH THE THINGS WE FIND is a feature-length documentary of this vision, and of the soulful lifelong partnership of the people, designers Ada Tolla and Giuseppe Lignano, behind it. WE START WITH THE THINGS WE FIND shows us a way to be radically optimistic, creative, and construc-tive during times that can feel the opposite of all that. Director Thomas Piper’s acclaimed documentary feature Five Seasons: The Gardens of Piet Oudolf showed how wild and unfavored plants could encourage audiences to live more responsibly with nature, and now he looks at living more smartly and sweetly with the effects of industry, infrastructure, and technology. Taking us from spark-filled workshops to a container ship sea voyage over a shimmering sea; and explaining all the prosaic and poetic design thinking behind how LOT-EK brings the container to life, the film shows how all we have can become all we need, how resourceful subsistence can feel like beautiful abundance, and how to keep going when we now know there is no such thing as a fresh start. The film is a humanist essay not only about a new kind of design thinking, but about a new design for life.

How to Boom, Not Bust: An Alum Connection Exploring Haseeb Mahmood’s Journey at Dell Technologies Entering and Thriving in Today’s Tech Industry Climate (April 8, 2024 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/120713 120713-21845165@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, April 8, 2024 12:00pm
Location: LSA Building
Organized By: LSA Opportunity Hub

Tech sales and the tech industry always seem to be a hot conversation, but you may find yourself wondering if the degree you’ve chosen fits into the world of tech.

Biology major? Haseeb will tell you that fits just fine.

Communications major? Haseeb says “that’ll totally work.”

Perhaps you’re a Computer Science major but want to focus on the sales side?

Of course you can do that.

What about Cognitive Science, you say?

Well, that’s one major Haseeb can personally attest to being at home in the world of tech. Haseeb Mahmood is an LSA graduate who majored in Cognitive Science (‘22) and currently works in Tech sales — a field and profession he wasn't even aware he wanted to pursue until his senior year. After all, you only get paid when you make a sale, or don’t you? (short-answer absolutely not, but you won’t believe how many people Haseeb’s met who believed this was the case). Haseeb's excited to answer your questions regarding the world of tech, tech sales, how to apply your degree, dealing with imposter syndrome, and maybe even tell you what it’s like having a peek behind the curtain of the AI boom. So join us for lunch as we discuss these topics and many more!

About Haseeb:
Haseeb's currently a Data Protection Specialist at Dell Technologies, residing in Austin, Texas. A Cognitive Science major with a Cappo Sales Track certification, his personal blend of Michigan education gave him all the appropriate tools for a field and a profession that doesn't have a specific degree or path for how to get started in it. Haseeb's also a Michigan and Lions Football fan, and he had to work overtime to defend the Wolverines against the naysayers in his office on the historic run to the National Title. He's also a big soccer fan (F.C. Barcelona), enjoys motorsports, and is an avid seeker of live music and comedy. You can find him on any given weekend exploring new food spots in Austin, ever continuing to experience how incredible Austin is, humbly conceding how brutally wrong his initial perception of the city truly was.

Join us for this networking opportunity with Haseeb! Lunch will be provided at event.

The Opportunity Hub Accessibility Statement

Oblique Histories: Nigerian Indigenous Architecture With and Against Zbigniew Dmochowski (April 11, 2024 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/117320 117320-21839167@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, April 11, 2024 2:00pm
Location: Art and Architecture Building
Organized By: A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning

The impulse to decolonize architectural history often leads to a double bind. The critique of colonial epistemologies is accompanied by a revalorization of the colonial archives, methods, and experiences as indispensable sources for the understanding of architectural modernities. This symposium proposes a different approach. It traces the oblique trajectories of actors moving between what usually counts as the “peripheries” of the West. It focuses on the comprehensive study of Indigenous (“traditional”) architecture in Nigeria, carried out between the 1950s and the 1970s by a Nigerian-Polish team led by Zbigniew Dmochowski (1903-82): architect, historian, and the first director of the Museum of Traditional Nigerian Architecture at Jos, Nigeria.

Dmochowski’s surveys were based on research methods which he developed in the context of the interwar “internal colonization” of the Eastern European borderlands. Symposium participants will question his argument about the applicability of these methods for the decolonization of architecture in Nigeria. Speakers will debate how Nigerian educators, architects, and scholars have appropriated Dmochowski’s work against the paradigms of modernist architecture and nation-building that he advocated. In this way, the seminar will foreground differing perspectives on colonialism while undermining the epistemic authority of the former colonial metropoles.

This symposium is supported by the African Heritage and Humanities Initiative (AHHI) Collaborative Faculty Seed Grant from the African Studies Center at the University of Michigan, Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, the Copernicus Center for Polish Studies, and the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia at the University of Michigan.

She has also published articles in the Journal of Modern History and Slavic Review and in several edited volumes. She is currently working on a second book, Sites of Sovereignty: Law, Citizenship, and Lives on the Margins in Poland’s Long World War II, which traces how the Polish government-in-exile used legal mechanisms to maintain the perception of sovereignty in the absence of a territorial state.

Warebi Gabriel Brisibe is a registered Architect, a Researcher and a Professor at the Rivers State University, School of Architecture. He obtained a PhD in Architecture from Newcastle University, United Kingdom in 2011, where he focused on the Dynamics of Change in the vernacular architecture of migrant fishing tribes in Nigeria and Cameroon. His research interests are in African vernacular and heritage buildings, colonial and post-colonial studies and archival studies in architecture.
