Building the Future: A Distinguished Lecture Series for Academics and Professionals

Jennifer Wilcox, the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management at DOE, discusses "The Role of Carbon Capture in Meeting Net-Zero Carbon Goals" and how it relates to shaping resource flows.

President Biden has laid out a bold and ambitious goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions in the U.S. by 2050. The pathway to that target includes cutting total greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030 and eliminating them entirely from the Nation’s electricity sector by 2035. Investment in technology research, design, development, and deployment (RDD&D) will be required to achieve the president’s objectives, including investments in both carbon capture at point sources in addition to carbon dioxide removal approaches that target the accumulated pool of carbon in the atmosphere. Both will be required to achieve net-zero carbon emissions in time and they will require increased deployment in order to move down the cost curve. These efforts combined with effective policy will make these approaches economically viable. These approaches are critical and they must be deployed in parallel. Deployment of these technologies at the scale required will necessitate the use of resources including land, water, and in some cases, low-carbon energy, while ensuring the secure and reliable storage of carbon dioxide (CO2) on a timescale that impacts climate. Therefore, CCS and CDR deployment must be implemented strategically in terms of regional goals and requirements.

A panelist discussion will follow the lecture. Our distinguished panelists include: Andres Clarens, Professor, University of Virginia, Associate Director, Environmental Resilience Institute; and Richard Middleton, CEO, Carbon Solutions, LLC.

Sponsored by the U-M Global CO2 Initiative; Penn Engineering, University of Pennsylvania; Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management, U.S. DOE; Kleinman Center; and U-M Graham Sustainability Institute

Location: Transportation Research Institute
Organized By: Center for Connected and Automated Transportation

The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI), in a project sponsored by the Center for Connected and Automated Transportation (CCAT), is helping engineering students explore issues of older adult accessibility, acceptability, and other aspects of inclusion related to CAVs through classroom discussions and implementation of a class project.

In this poster session, project researchers and Michigan Engineering students will present findings from the project on how human-centered design principles can be used to address the needs and preferences of older adults in the design of CAVs. Hors d'oeuvres from The Produce Station will be served. Space is limited so secure your spot today.

CAVs hold promise for reducing traffic crashes and maintaining mobility among older adults. However, challenges remain in ensuring that CAVs are accessible, acceptable, and otherwise inclusive for older adults. Using a framework of experiential learning (exploring, engaging, reflecting, and communicating), students in a human-centered design course taught by Dr. Feng Zhou engaged in a classroom project to identify potential solutions for making CAVs more responsive to older adult needs and preferences. Students and researchers from the larger project will share their findings with CCAT members, UMTRI and other University faculty, staff, students, and industry representatives.

In today’s society, the need to graduate engineers who are conscious of their ethical and professional responsibilities is more important than ever. This is especially difficult given the current media environment that publicizes reports of algorithmic bias, drone-based surveillance, and emissions falsification (among other issues) but provides few positive role models for students. While engineering programs have made significant strides to incorporate ethics instruction into the engineering curriculum, there is little evidence about which approaches best prepare students to address the ethical challenges they will face in the workforce. In this session, Dr. Finelli will present research about the state of undergraduate ethics instruction and it’s long term impact, propose a new approach to ethics instruction, and offer two course-based approaches to better educate ethical engineers.

This presentation will discuss science communication efforts over the past three years by engineers and aerosol scientists in communicating to the world that SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, is airborne. This represented a paradigm shift in the overall understanding of disease transmission from droplets and surfaces (aka “droplet dogma”) to aerosol or airborne transmission. It required a major concerted effort between engineers, scientists, members of the public, and enlightened members in the medical field.
This presentation will discuss coordinated efforts by scientists and engineers largely through social media. Highlights will be given of all methods used to induce this change including letters to the White House, Editorials, publications in top journals including Science and The Lancet, meetings with CDC officials and Dr. Fauci, as well as testifying for OSHA and congressional hearings. Finally, a discussion of the raised awareness and efforts now focusing on the need to clean indoor air will be discussed, including efforts being implemented in schools, homes, and businesses. A summary of lessons learned from these experiences and how they will benefit research going forward will be provided.

As engineering education scholars and engineering educators, many of us pursue educational change and innovation through our research, teaching, service, and leadership activities. In this pursuit, we take intentional and strategic actions towards educational change and innovation goals that matter to us, whether that is reimagining graduate admissions to be a more equitable and inclusive process or redesigning how students are introduced to the ideas of heat and temperature in a foundational engineering course. Our actions towards these goals represent our professional agency towards educational change.

The focus of this talk will be to explore the question of How might we empower and enable faculty to engage in educational change at their institutions? To support this exploration, I will introduce a contextualized theory for professional agency towards educational change that was developed based on a longitudinal and collaborative qualitative study of six early career engineering education scholars. The theory has since been used to examine the actions and experiences of engineering instructional faculty at Hispanic-Serving Institutions. Using both studies as examples, we will consider our own experiences pursuing change efforts through this lens and begin to imagine how we might further promote this type of professional agency within our communities.

Whether efficient public transit, climate change, or air and water pollution, marginalized communities are regularly denied access to healthy environments. Differences in power and political voice create differential impacts of our changing environment—natural and built—on these communities, compromising access to basic necessities like clean water and breathable air. Legislation to redress these differential impacts requires policymakers to work hand in glove with the communities they represent.

Join Dr. Abdul El-Sayed - physician, epidemiologist, and newly appointed Director of the Wayne County Health, Human & Veterans Services Department, and a former Ford School Towsley Policymaker in Residence - for a conversation with policymakers at the intersection of social justice and environmental concerns. Dr. El-Sayed will be joined by Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib and Michigan Senator Stephanie Chang (MPP/MSW '14) to reflect on their work to address environmental injustice in Michigan and beyond, and the challenges and opportunities ahead.

At this event, the Ford School will also recognize Senator Chang with the prestigious Neil Staebler Distinguished Service Award for her dedication to excellence in public service. Read the announcement here.

Representative Rashida Tlaib is currently the Congresswoman for Michigan’s 12th Congressional District, which includes the city of Detroit and many surrounding communities. She made history in 2008 by becoming the first Muslim woman to ever serve in the Michigan Legislature.

Senator Stephanie Chang is a Ford School alumna and the first Asian American woman to be elected to the Michigan Legislature. Chang worked as a community organizer in Detroit for nearly a decade before serving two terms in the Michigan House of Representatives.

Co-sponsored by the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan.

In higher education, teacher empathy is a term that refers to the empathetic skills of teachers and has been researched since the 1980s. Multiple studies in fields such as medicine, nursing and psychology have shown that teacher empathy has reduced teacher burnout, improved teacher satisfaction and student performance. Within engineering education, there is increased research on empathy in recent years, but primarily aimed at introducing and improving empathetic skills of engineering students. There is very little research on teacher empathy within engineering education. In my current study, I explored the potential changes in perception of teacher empathy among three engineering faculty members as they utilized empathetic actions while teaching a second-year engineering course. I also explored the motivations and challenges that could arise in teacher empathy implementation. The outcome of this study could be used by faculty development programs, department heads and university deans to expand the implementation of teacher empathy within a college or university.

A confluence of opportunities and national and international grand challenges are influencing current directions in the design of urban regions as populations expand. This presentation will summarize new developments to create resilient and sustainable cities through research on the built environment across several themes. Research on resilience highlights the development of structural systems that are able to be returned to use quickly after extreme events. Sustainable engineering, in turn, highlights research on strategies for developing new structural systems that greatly decrease the amount of energy, material waste, pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions in construction and use of buildings and other structures. Urban engineering summarizes approaches for conducting regional simulations to predict the impacts and opportunities across urban regions that are designed with more sustainable and resilient civil engineering solutions. By directly addressing resilience and sustainability in structural design and regional assessment, this work offers insights into how engineering innovations can be used to create a new generation of solutions for urban regions.

A panel discussion will follow the lecture. Our distinguished panelists include: Lawrence F. Kruth, Kruth Engineering, LLC, Former Vice President of Engineering & Research at AISC; Jason McCormick, Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Michigan; and Tabitha Stine, General Manager of Construction Solutions Services at Nucor Corporation.

Topic: *Traffic signal optimization with connected vehicle trajectories*

Traffic signal retiming is one of the most cost-effective methods for reducing congestion and energy consumption in urban areas based on the existing road infrastructure. However, high installation and maintenance costs of vehicle detectors have prevented the widespread implementation of adaptive traffic control systems (ATSC). Therefore, most intersections are still controlled by fixed-time traffic signals which are not updated regularly due to the lack of traffic monitoring capabilities. In the past few years, vehicle trajectory data has become increasingly available and offers many advantages over detectors and other infrastructure-based sensors for traffic monitoring; but using such data for automatic traffic signal diagnosis and optimization at scalable implementable levels is relatively unexplored. To fill this gap, this work proposes Optimizing Traffic Signals as a Service (OSaaS), an integrated traffic signal re-timing system that uses vehicle trajectories as the main input. OSaaS addresses many of the current challenges relating to signal retiming with trajectory data such as incomplete observation due to limited penetration rates. The system builds a queueing model that reconstructs the overall average traffic state, calibrated from performance measurements directly obtained from vehicle trajectories. The calibrated queueing model then predicts and evaluates network performance under different traffic signal parameters to provide diagnostics and direct traffic signal retiming guidance. In April 2022, a citywide field test of OSaaS was conducted in Birmingham, Michigan, with 34 signalized intersections. This resulted in decreases in both the delay and number of stops by up to 20% and 30%, respectively. OSaaS provides a more scalable, sustainable, resilient, and efficient solution to traffic signal retiming without requiring any additional infrastructure through the exclusive utilization of currently available trajectory data. As a result, it presents the possibility of upgrading all existing fixed-time traffic signals to dynamic systems with periodical parameter updates, something that is not currently possible without significant investments in infrastructure-based traffic flow sensors.

This seminar contributes to a recent movement in engineering education, calling attention to fostering more engineering students to develop social awareness to solve complex problems in the real world. As many engineering problems raised in a community can be related to addressing social issues, community-based learning (CBL) has become a way to educate more empathic engineers. However, there is an ethical consideration in CBL as the outcome of student learning can impact a real-world community partner. Therefore, it is critical to understand how students engage with empathy in CBL to commit to the community’s needs authentically before implementation.

In this seminar, I will share some qualitative findings from my dissertation study focusing on how students shift between the roles of “self” and “others” in the process of engaging with empathy in CBL. I also investigated different types of opportunities to expose students to empathy in CBL, such as structural opportunities (how the CBL activity is organized), social opportunities (how students are guided to work with others), and reflective opportunities (how students think about what they have learned). The seminar concludes with practical recommendations for engineering educators to understand how to support students to engage with empathy in community-based learning contexts.

Topic: *Pricing Physical Water Risk: Machine Learning Approaches to Quantify the Impact of Corporate Water Use Efficiencies in the Financial Markets*

Corporate financial risk in their operations resulting from climate change and water resource limitations result in volatility in the capital markets. This has become a regulatory focus under the Task for Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), forcing companies to disclose how climate is impacting their financial performance. This includes water risk exposures in water security and the impact of floods in supply chains, logistics, and operations resulting from water access. Corporate water intensity, a proxy for climate transition risk, relates water use efficiency to operational and capital asset risks. This information is generally not disclosed in financial or sustainability reports and is difficult for investors or regulators to assess, and for risk managers to address. This seminar focuses on the development of econometric models to price water risk in equities with the aim of informing corporate decision-makers and external stakeholders to assess and benchmark the financial valuation of water risk and to allow for comparison across industry sectors.

Society has become increasingly reliant on digital technology, but public infrastructure has not yet evolved to support and enable these social, commercial, and municipal needs. Industry migration to renewable energy and Big Data continues to alter the way we live and work, and growing demand for connected, electric, and autonomous vehicles will require more than ever-more-expensive vehicles traveling on poorly maintained, deteriorating traditional roadways. Our aging transportation infrastructure needs to be transformed and digitized to support public demands for existing technology and enable the evolution of those needs over future generations. Leveraging new approaches to digital infrastructure, data analytics, and modern financing reduces a daunting task into an approach that revolutionizes public infrastructure while incentivizing sustainable planning and implementation strategies.

A panel discussion will follow the lecture, featuring Rick Geddes, Professor, Department of Policy Analysis and Management at Cornell University, and Tim Slusser, Chief of Mobility Innovation for the City of Detroit.

Our co-sponsors include CCAT, UMTRI, Mcity, Integrated Roadways, the City of Detroit and the Cornell Program in Infrastructure Policy.

Mentoring From a Blank Slate: A Challenge for Multidisciplinarity (September 21, 2023 2:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/112726 112726-21829468@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, September 21, 2023 2:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Engineering Education Research

This seminar is Hybrid (Presentation Room 1180, Duderstadt Center and via Zoom).

Abstract: Science and engineering are increasingly multidisciplinary. Many researchers encounter career challenges when adopting methods from fields outside their formal training. For example, faculty who shift disciplines need to acquire new skills while fulfilling their mentoring responsibilities to students who join them in the new field. We used collaborative autoethnography to study a tripartite mentoring relationship between an experienced engineering education researcher and two novice education researchers who have backgrounds in engineering—a biomedical engineering faculty member and graduate student. Using data from written reflections and interviews, we explored the role of instrumental and psychosocial supports in our mentoring relationship. We noted how elements of cognitive apprenticeship such as scaffolding and gradual fading of instrumental supports helped novices learn qualitative research skills that differed drastically from their biomedical engineering research expertise. While our mentoring relationship was overall very positive, it has included many moments of miscommunication and misunderstanding. We draw on Lent and Lopez’s idea of relation-inferred self-efficacy to explain some of these missed opportunities for communication and understanding. Our initial mentoring model failed to consider how challenging it is for mentees to make the paradigm shift from technical engineering to social science research and how that would affect a faculty member’s ability to mentor students in a new field. Our experiences have implications for expanding research capacity because they raise practical and conceptual issues for experienced and novice researchers to consider as they form mentoring relationships.

Can we engineer the energy transition? The science and engineering of bulk energy storage into concrete structures (September 29, 2023 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/112861 112861-21829665@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, September 29, 2023 9:00am

If you mix cement, carbon black with water, the magic of chemistry generates an electron conductive volumetric wire, which permeates a load-bearing cement-based matrix. Herein we show, how this magic of chemistry can be used to build a scalable supercapacitor technology for energy storage, which everyone can build into their homes and roads. Possible applications include the energy autarkic home, self-charging roads (by electromagnetic induction) and intermittent energy storage for wind energy and tidal waves. Availability of cement and carbon black makes this technology a good candidate for the urgently needed energy transition from fossil fuel to renewable energies, which puts us, Civil Engineers, in the driver seat of engineering the energy transition through our built infrastructure, brick-by-brick, road-by-road for all.

Franz-Josef Ulm is Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering at MIT. A structural engineer by training he joined MIT in 1999, where he is responsible for Materials and Structures. He is an elected member of the US National Academy of Engineering, of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. He is Editor-In-Chief of the Journal of Engineering Mechanics of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Artist Talk and Reception (October 4, 2023 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/110764 110764-21825498@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, October 4, 2023 4:00pm
Location: Lane Hall
Organized By: Institute for Research on Women and Gender

Join us in the Lane Hall Exhibit Space (first floor) on Wednesday 10/4 to celebrate Sarah Buckius’ innovative exhibition !!!techn010ffspring!!! Refreshments, community, and conversation will be available starting at 4pm. At 5pm the artist will give a talk on the exhibition, its origins, and her process in Lane Hall 2239. There will be time for Q&A.

About the exhibit:
Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is an exhibition where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology, robotics, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves.

Trained as an engineer and an artist, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex, layered, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood, technology, female bodies, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to, and alternative to, patriarchal, capitalist, production-based, and seemingly rational, useful, logical systems.

About the Artist:
Sarah Buckius is an artist, educator, and engineer who lives in Santa Cruz, California. Originally from the midwest (Champaign, IL), she holds an M.F.A. from The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and a B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Her creative work, which incorporates digital media (video, photography, collage, animation) and performance, has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Through her work, she weaves "Intertwined HerStories" that originate from the cross-section of *-gender-*-technology-*-lens-based-media-*-the human body-*-caregiving-*. She works in the space of absurdity that emerges at the point of disconnect between the seemingly coded / structured / ordered / production-based space of technology and the messy / complex / idiosyncratic space of humanity and is interested in uncovering the ways in which working with and creating technology illuminates humanness, including gender biases. With an underlying goal of supporting DEI in STEM fields, her work illuminates the ingenuity of diverse groups of people.

“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F, 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.

This project was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan and co-sponsored by U-M’s Department of Women’s and Gender Studies and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender with support from the Arts Council Santa Cruz County.

The term “computer science” was invented as something that should be taught to everyone in order to facilitate learning other subjects and to reduce the danger of having a powerful new technology controlled by only a few. Computing education has not become the democratizing force imagined in the 1960’s. Today, computer science has a narrow definition and is mostly about getting a high-paying technology job. If we want to reach the original and more general goal, we have to change how we teach computing and support alternative end-points for computing education. In this talk, I review the history of “computer science” and its earlier purpose. I describe and demonstrate new kinds of languages, approaches, and courses that broaden accessibility to computing education.

This seminar is HYBRID (in-person and via Zoom). Refreshments will be provided if you join us in-person.

We are excited to invite all interested students to attend an open house to learn about the UM's graduate program in Engineering Education Research (EER). UM's EER program represents a unique, interdisciplinary model: EER Ph.D. students (who enjoy a full funding package) and M.S. students are part of a college-wide program, while several tenure-line EER faculty are embedded within the traditional engineering departments. The integrated nature of the program allows the EER faculty and their research groups to be well-integrated with the traditional engineering disciplines, and it provides students a better opportunity to engage in innovative research and make scholarly contributions to the engineering education community. More information about the program is available at our EER website (https://eer.engin.umich.edu/)

Students from all institutions are invited to attend (a Zoom link will be emailed prior to the program). Participants will hear about the EER graduate program, meet faculty who are recruiting students for AY 2024-25, and learn about career opportunities as a UM graduate in this field. Application fee waivers will be provided to those who attend.

University of Minnesota associate professor Chris Faulk, PhD, studies functional genomics in the department of animal science.

Dr. Faulk's Lab focus is on Epigenetics, Aging, Evolution, and Environmental Science. Dr. Faulk's lab statement, "My research is multi-scale with studies at the molecular genetic level in multiple organisms and human populations. I use computational methods to predict changes to the epigenome caused aging, dietary interventions, and environmental toxicants. I focus on both gene promoters and repetitive elements. My research models, the mouse and human, are primarily impacted by dietary shifts in nutrient availability and quantity simultaneously with toxicant exposure. My data analysis leverages massively parallel sequencing with comparative genomics to reveal regions evolutionarily selected for environmental plasticity."

International Perspectives on Teamwork in Engineering Education (November 9, 2023 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/114745 114745-21833411@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, November 9, 2023 2:00pm
Location: Duderstadt Center
Organized By: Engineering Education Research

Teamwork or collaboration skills are integral to contemporary engineering practice and are highly valued in academic and industry settings. ABET also considers vital teamwork skills as one key student learning outcome for accreditation and evaluation of engineering education. Research shows that student learning outcomes are highly affected by faculty beliefs about teaching and learning. Effective professional development programs for faculty need to understand their beliefs as these beliefs shape their teaching practices. As engineering practice and engineering education are becoming increasingly globalized, we need to take a more culturally relevant approach to understand how key competencies such as teamwork are culturally constructed and how the development of faculty beliefs is affected by broader cultural factors. In this seminar, Yi will introduce some of her educational background and research experiences to provide an international lens to understand teamwork in engineering education. She will then present a systematic review of the existing Chinese literature on how Chinese faculty conceptualize teamwork in the classroom. In conclusion, she will also talk about some parts of her dissertation, how faculty in the US develop their teaching beliefs about teamwork.
