Students work four days a week, attend an elective one evening a week, and a research course on Friday mornings. They spend their weekends exploring the city and taking in cultural events.

For in-person, refreshments served at 5:30 pm and the Program is 6:00-8:00 pm. In addition to Ms. Patterson, the event includes a Detroit Community Panel, moderated by Laprisha Berry Daniels (Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice):

The disproportionate impacts of disasters for communities of color have been documented repeatedly for both natural and human-caused disasters. In Michigan:
* More than 500,000 Michigan residents live within one mile of a facility storing large amounts of extremely hazardous chemicals;
* Those residents are disproportionately Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) and confront daily risks of spills, explosions, and other environmental disasters at the facilities, as well as from the transport of chemicals to and from them through their communities;
* Children of color are more than two times as likely as white children in Michigan to live in the shadow of facilities housing hazardous substances.

This event, organized by Detroit community leaders with support from local academic institutions, will:
* Discuss why emergency preparedness and response is an environmental and climate justice issue;
* Describe gaps and challenges in Detroit’s emergency preparedness and response, from and environmental and climate justice perspective;
* Share recommendations for improving emergency preparedness and response for environmental and climate justice communities.

Location: Rackham Graduate School (Horace H.)
Organized By: UNICEF at the University of Michigan

This year, for our second annual gala, UNICEF-UM is focusing on ending child marriage in the United States of America. UNICEF defines child marriage as "a harmful practice and a violation of child rights and believes that marriage under age 18 should be prohibited in all circumstances, everywhere." Both UNICEF and the United Nations declare child marriage a human rights violation.

While our gala seeks to celebrate the work of our incredible members over the past academic year, and recognize and send off our seniors, we also hope to inspire our university community to take action with us in an effort to protect children.

UNICEF at Michigan also welcomes three special guests:

Dr. Fatma Müge Göçek: Dr. Göçek is UNICEF UM's faculty advisor and Professor of Sociology at the University of Michigan.

Her research focuses on the comparative analysis of history, politics, and gender in the first and third worlds. She critically analyzes the impact of processes such as development, nationalism, religious movements, and collective violence on minorities. She is currently working on a theory book, constructing social theory from the vantage point of minorities. Learn more here.

Paul Callejas: Paul is a Community Engagement Associate for the Midwestern United States and has become an integral connection for UNICEF UM's members who are eager to take their commitment to UNICEF USA to the next level. We welcome Paul as our special guest to thank him for his immense efforts in community mobilization and youth empowerment.

Paul grew up in the Little Village neighborhood of Chicago. Being a product of the public school system, Paul believes that all youth deserve an equal chance of success. He has defeated many socioeconomic barriers as an indigenous man from Guerrero, Mexico; Paul has over six years of youth development and project planning, working with various non-profit organizations. He aspires to help as many Chicago teens reach their potential and become global citizens. Learn more here.

Purple Run Ann Arbor - 9th annual - 5k event

8:00am- Registration opens

8:40am- Welcome and opening remarks

9:00am- Race begins

The Annual Purple Run is an exciting collaboration between the U-M DPSS Special Victims Unit, Ann Arbor Police Department, the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office, and SafeHouse Center to bring our community together while highlighting the prevalence of Domestic Violence. In Washtenaw County, law enforcement and advocates work very closely with one another and, whether it is on active cases or community events, we are actively engaged in protecting and safe-guarding the public.

The Purple Run is much more than a fundraiser. Our goal is to raise awareness about Domestic Violence and to help the community recognize this issue affects all of us. There is strength in numbers, and we are so excited that you want to join us and make a statement to survivors that there is support in our community.

The Cappuccino Man will be on site providing hot beverages to all participants.

Every 60 seconds, 20 people are subject to intimate partner violence.

How can universities that were founded on colonized land, funded by the colonization of land, and dedicated to advancing colonialism reckon with their histories and the ongoing legacies of those histories in the present moment?

Introduction:
Ethriam Brammer, Assistant Dean and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Implementation Lead, Rackham Graduate School

Panel:
Misty Blue, (White Earth Nation), Grassroots Solutions, Toward Recognition and University-Tribal Healing Project, University of Minnesota

Phenocia Bauerle (Apsaálooke), The University of California Land Grab, University of California, Berkeley

Jon Parmenter, Cornell University and Indigenous Dispossession Project, Cornell University

Respondent:
Matthew Fletcher, Harry Burns Hutchins Collegiate Professor of Law, Law School; Professor of American Culture, College of Literature, Science, and the Arts

UNDER THE CAMPUS, THE LAND is a set of public conversations about the place of the U.S. university in Native and settler colonial histories and futures. Organized by Andrew Herscher, these conversations will bring together Native and settler voices speaking to and about the university around four themes: reckoning with the settler university, advancing Native student activism, investigating university land, and making amends to the land. These conversations will take place in conjunction with two exhibitions at the University of Michigan Museum of Art: Andrea Carlson’s Future Cache, which commemorates the Cheboiganing Band of Ottawa and Chippewa people who were violently displaced from land in Northern Michigan now owned by the University of Michigan, and Cannupa Hanska Luger’s You’re Welcome, which explores histories and narratives of land occupied by the University of Michigan.

Generously supported by the Native American Studies (NAS) Program at the University of Michigan, the U-M Arts Initiative, Stamps School of Art & Design, Stamps Gallery, UMMA, and the Department of the History of Art at the University of Michigan

Professional workers, especially in health care and education, are among the least happy, most burnt-out categories of workers. This should be surprising, given that what they do is inherently meaningful, and that the content of their work is interesting and engages skills that most people find intrinsically rewarding to exercise. I argue that the discontent of so many professionals is likely due to their increasing proletarianization. As professionals become increasingly submerged as employees in large organizations, often operated on a for-profit basis, they suffer losses of professional autonomy. The organizations they work for operate on a managerial logic that disdains and suppresses the kinds of local, personal, practical knowledge that professionals cultivate and need to exercise to do their jobs well. I explore the contrasts between the kind of knowledge managers use to pursue organizational goals and the kind of knowledge professionals use in their everyday interactions with patients, students, and clients, to explain the pervasive burnout of professionals in large organizations.

Month of Gratitude
When: Wednesday, November 8th
Where: Duderstadt Connector Hallway
Time: 11 am - 1 pm

The College of Engineering will be hosting its annual Month of Gratitude event on Wednesday, November 8th, 11 am - 1 pm. For those who have not participated in the past, this fun and gratifying event provides our engineering students to share what they are grateful for and the opportunity to give back to local charities.

Wrap the Block M in Gratitude: Write down the things or people you appreciate and ‘stick em on the M.’ The goal is to completely wrap the BIG M with an attitude of gratitude. Students who participate will get a FREE Zingerman’s pretzel and a Michigan Engineering bottle of water.

Comfort for Community: The College is providing no sew blanket kits to any student who would like to make a warm blanket and donate their non-sewing skills to the many people and pets who are in need of comfort during the cold season. Your blankets will be donated to the Huron Valley Humane Society, Michigan Humane, and the Shelter Association of Washtenaw County. Any student who participates and completes a blanket will automatically be entered into a GRAND PRIZE DRAWING - Thanksgiving dinner for two at Zingerman’s Roadhouse. Blanket kits will be available beginning Thursday, November 9th in the Duderstadt basement. You must sign-up during the event to reserve (kits are limited).

If you have any questions, please contact connect-engin@umich.edu.

A Platform Rating System and Vulnerable Workers: Evidence from Field Experiments in Singapore (November 10, 2023 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/114388 114388-21832822@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, November 10, 2023 1:30pm
Location: Ross School of Business
Organized By: Interdisciplinary Committee on Organizational Studies - ICOS

How to enhance the working conditions and wellbeing of vulnerable workers is a topic of growing importance. This study examines the use of two-sided labor market platforms as a private governance solution to protect vulnerable workers in contexts where the power dynamics between employers and workers are highly unequal. Specifically, we collaborated with a Singapore-based online platform that connects foreign domestic workers with employers (families). In this setting, it is not uncommon for workers to be mistreated by employers via various forms of exploitation and abuse. The collaborating platform was interested in exploring whether introducing a new rating system that allows workers to rate employers could improve this situation for workers. Accordingly, we randomized communication about such a rating system and examined how each side of the platform reacted. We found that employers did not respond positively to the rating system, though their negative reaction was offset if they were nudged to consider the instrumental benefits of the intervention for them. Surprisingly, workers also disliked the idea of the rating system, despite it being intended to protect and empower them. Post-hoc analysis and interviews suggest that the most vulnerable workers were particularly concerned about the employer-rating system. Our paper illustrates that, in settings with large power differentials, platform governance mechanisms intended to help vulnerable workers could have unintended negative consequences. It thus highlights the importance of understanding the nuanced determinants of vulnerable workers’ challenges when considering whether platform governance might improve or exacerbate them.
