Join us virtually for Professor Cheng's lecture, “Against Use: Asian American Masculinity and the Telos of Utilitarianism.”

What does a concept like “Ornamentalism” have to teach us about Asian American masculinity? Does Asian American masculinity, normally excluded from the realm of aesthetic consideration, have anything to do with ornamentality at all? This talk explores the tension between beauty and ugliness, between usefulness and uselessness, embedded in and provoked by the ornament for the specter of Asiatic masculinity.

It’s been only 10 years since Michelle has walked campus as an U-M LSA undergraduate. Yet since then, she’s embarked on a lifetime’s worth of adventure: she’s lived abroad in France and mastered the French language, served a year in AmeriCorps, road-tripped up and down the U.S. as a tour manager, settled back into her hometown of Chicago, and has quickly climbed the corporate ladder to her current position as Senior Manager of Marketing Operations at PandaDoc. Michelle says “I've always found myself at the intersection of creativity and pragmatism, which translates to dreaming big and being able to accomplish it with a concrete action plan.” Now she is ready to share with LSA students how she identifies action plans for herself, leans into the mentors in her network, and uses her writing skills to effectively communicate in the corporate world.

About Michelle:

Michelle is involved in organizations such as Chicago Innovation’s Women’s Mentoring Co-Op, in addition to being a multimedia content creator and a chronic foodie. In her free time, she likes thru-hiking, traveling, and D&D.

You should attend this session if you are:
-A UM undergraduate LSA student
-Looking to translate and communicate a range of LSA experiences to prospective employers
-Interested in a career in digital marketing, operations, social media, advertising, or sales and business development.

What you’ll gain by attending:
-Make a valuable connection with an LSA alum who is ready to help you succeed
-Get ideas for how to leverage mentorship relationships in your life
-Gain insights into how to use your skills to advance in your profession.

RSVP NOW to be part of the conversation. The link to join this Alum Connection will be emailed to you after you RSVP.

The LSA Opportunity Hub aims to deliver inclusive and accessible experiences and welcomes all LSA students to participate. This event will be hosted on Zoom and can be accessed by phone or computer. Presentation materials may be shared in advance if requested, and live captioning will be provided. To request other accommodations please contact Sairah Husain at sairah@umich.edu or 734-763-4674 so we can make arrangements.
