Discover Delight in the Decadence

In this exhibition, YehRim Lee positions colorful clay and metal sculptures on a complex structure of her own design to create a joyful, immersive environment. Inspired by the fashion trend of the same name, Dopamine Dressing leans into the idea that bright colors and surprising textures can create happiness by activating chemicals in the brain. Clothing designers used this concept to battle the doldrums of the pandemic and here, artist YehRim Lee asks visitors to see how vibrancy, materiality, and expressive movement in art can have the same effect.

She repeatedly refires her clay sculptures, introducing a new glaze each time until the surfaces begin to warp and crack, approaching collapse, suggesting that the dopamine bursts that come from sensual pleasure or excessive consumption perhaps provide only temporary relief from the cares of the world.

Lead support for this exhibition is provided by the William C. Weese, M.D. Endowment for Ceramic Arts, the U–M Office of the Provost, and the Nam Center for Korean Studies. Additional generous support is provided by the U-M Department of History of Art and the U-M Department of Asian Languages and Cultures.

EEB Thursday Seminar Series - "The causes and consequences of social interactions" (September 14, 2023 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/111589 111589-21827281@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, September 14, 2023 3:00pm
Location: Biological Sciences Building
Organized By: Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

Animal social behavior emerges from interactions among individuals, therefore, it is important to understand both the mechanisms that shape interactions and their consequences. Because most animals need to be in proximity to interact, individual differences in animal movements are especially important for determining who interacts with whom. Furthermore, the environment can shape the ways in which animals interact, for example by impacting their movement patterns. Social interactions in turn determine population-level processes, such as information flow and disease transmission, which can impact fitness and shape the evolution of sociality. In this talk, I will examine various causes and consequences of social interactions with examples from social insects and birds using lab experiments, field observations, models, and social network analysis. Uncovering the causes and consequences of social interactions is essential for understanding the emergence of social behavior.

Loneliness, absence, and mental health in psychopathology and beyond (September 15, 2023 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/110440 110440-21824913@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, September 15, 2023 1:30pm
Location: Ross School of Business
Organized By: Interdisciplinary Committee on Organizational Studies - ICOS

Most of us experience loneliness at some point in our lives. It’s even come to be regarded as an urgent public health concern. However, until recently, philosophers have had little to say about it — including those working in phenomenological psychopathology, which investigates experiential disturbances of an individual’s relation to themselves, others, and the wider world. In this talk, I consider the importance of loneliness for psychopathology and beyond. Building on work with Lucy Osler and Tom Roberts, I explore the experiential character of loneliness, with a specific emphasis on how “social goods” are experienced as absent in ways that involve a diminished sense of agency and recognition. I consider three case studies — depression, anorexia, and autism — and argue for the need to attend to psychopathology-specific expressions of loneliness, agency, and (non-)recognition. I also briefly consider the broader significance of this topic, including loneliness and mental health in the workplace.

Modernizing Regulatory Review (September 19, 2023 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/110565 110565-21825098@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, September 19, 2023 12:00pm
Location: Jeffries Hall
Organized By: Michigan Law Environmental and Energy Law Program

Please join us for the first Environmental & Energy Law Program lunch talk of the academic year. Richard Revesz, the administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, will deliver a lecture entitled "Modernizing Regulatory Review."

This event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be served.

On April 6, 2023, the Biden Administration took two actions to modernize regulatory review. First, the President signed an executive order that will focus federal agency and Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA) time and resources where they can have the greatest positive effect and bring more voices into the regulatory process. And second, OIRA issued proposed revisions to its government-wide guidance on regulatory analysis, Circular A-4, to help agencies better account for the full range of benefits and costs of their regulatory actions. This talk will particularly focus on Circular A-4, including proposed revisions to guidance on discounting, geographic scope of analysis, and distributional analysis.

Richard Revesz, the administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, is one of the nation’s leading voices in the fields of environmental and regulatory law and policy. He is also the AnBryce Professor of Law (on leave) and dean emeritus at the New York University School of Law. Revesz has published ten books and around 80 articles in major law reviews and journals advocating for protective and rational climate change and environmental policies, and examining the institutional contexts in which regulatory policy is made.

The Human Question: Jewish Thought in the Anthropocene (September 28, 2023 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/111305 111305-21826644@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, September 28, 2023 4:00pm
Location: Haven Hall
Organized By: Judaic Studies

"The field of modern Jewish thought has been slow to treat climate change as a significant area of inquiry. This reluctance stems from the fact that modern Jewish thought remains largely beholden to an increasingly untenable presumption that the human being is distinct from the non-human world. This outmoded view has stubbornly endured, I argue, because it underpins a prominent strategy for positioning Judaism favorably over against Christianity and other religious traditions. I locate the origins of this influential strategy in nineteenth-century German Jewish philosophy and then trace the manner in which Hermann Cohen embeds it into the basic foundations of the field. Finally, I show how the anthropocentric framing of this approach has persisted in Jewish thought, even as Cohen’s own project has been subsequently critiqued and repudiated. For modern Jewish thought to fully engage with the environmental humanities, it will need to reckon with this lingering legacy."

About the speaker: Robert Erlewine is a Professor of Religious Studies in the Department of History & Philosophy at Eastern Michigan University and the director of the Eastern Michigan University Center for Jewish Studies. Professor Erlewine is a scholar of modern Jewish thought with a particular interest in the German-Jewish tradition and its legacy in North America and beyond. He has published two monographs, Monotheism and Tolerance (2010) and Judaism and the West (2016), with Indiana University Press, and he edited and introduced an anthology of Abraham Joshua Heschel’s writings with Plough Press in 2021. He has published essays in a variety of academic journals including The Journal of Religion, Association for Jewish Studies Review, Harvard Theological Review, Modern Judaism, and Jewish Studies Quarterly.

Can we engineer the energy transition? The science and engineering of bulk energy storage into concrete structures (September 29, 2023 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/112861 112861-21829665@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, September 29, 2023 9:00am

If you mix cement, carbon black with water, the magic of chemistry generates an electron conductive volumetric wire, which permeates a load-bearing cement-based matrix. Herein we show, how this magic of chemistry can be used to build a scalable supercapacitor technology for energy storage, which everyone can build into their homes and roads. Possible applications include the energy autarkic home, self-charging roads (by electromagnetic induction) and intermittent energy storage for wind energy and tidal waves. Availability of cement and carbon black makes this technology a good candidate for the urgently needed energy transition from fossil fuel to renewable energies, which puts us, Civil Engineers, in the driver seat of engineering the energy transition through our built infrastructure, brick-by-brick, road-by-road for all.

Franz-Josef Ulm is Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering at MIT. A structural engineer by training he joined MIT in 1999, where he is responsible for Materials and Structures. In a village in the Niyamgiri mountains of the Eastern Ghats in Odisha, eastern India, a heroic effort is underway: barefoot ecologist Dr. Debal Deb and his team are conserving over 1000 endangered heirloom varieties of rice in-situ, the world’s largest project of its kind. Odisha’s Eastern Ghats region is one of the world’s surviving biodiversity hotspots, with farmers and shifting cultivators, particularly from Indigenous communities like the Kondhs possessing the knowledge of growing multiple crops with their own seeds, evolved over centuries. But the village and the wider region is irreversibly changing with the coming of genetically modified Bt and herbicide-tolerant cotton seeds and associated agrochemicals like glyphosate. ‘Seed Stories’ takes a worm’s eye view of how the swift expansion of a chemical-intensive cotton monoculture is reshaping a geography and a people steeped in agro-ecological knowledge, and altering their attitudes towards farming, food and ecology. It invites audiences to reflect on the question, ‘What is sustainability?’

Chitrangada Choudhury is an alumnus of the Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellowship program at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor, and her reportage on issues of the environment and human rights has been cited for multiple national and international journalism awards. She is currently a PhD candidate at the Department of Geography, University of Zurich.

Aniket Aga is an Assistant Professor of Geography at SUNY Buffalo and the author of ‘Genetically Modified Democracy’ (Yale University Press, 2021). The book won the 2022 Ludwik Fleck Prize from the Society for the Social Studies of Science (4S). His research interests lie in science & technology, democratic politics and agrarian change.

The ice underside in freshwater lakes of various sizes has been observed to be appreciably rough as a function of flow oscillations and pressure ridging in large open lakes, and variability in snow depth modifying the conductive heat flux (i.e. freezing rates) of the lake. In the case of an underwater oil pipeline rupture occurring in the winter, consolidated ice cover serves to both retain buoyant oil and mask the location of the oil to clean-up crews. The storage capacity of freshwater ice is a function of the roughness of the ice-water interface, the magnitude and correlation length of which varies dependent on the weather from year to year. This presentation focuses on preliminary investigations in the Straits of Mackinac which indicates that ice bottom variability in a region with considerable oscillatory flow is 0.3 m3 per m2, similar to that of first year sea ice. Additionally, the implication of ice-bottom roughness also extend to studies with the aim to improve the understanding of microwave interactions with freshwater ice (observed with airborne and spaceborne platforms), which holds potential to detect the presence of under-ice oil.

Webinar: Building Capacity for Reserves to be Motus Wildlife Tracking Leaders (October 18, 2023 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/112920 112920-21829782@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, October 18, 2023 3:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Graham Sustainability Institute

The Motus Wildlife Tracking System is an open-source, international network of community hosted radio-telemetry receivers and wildlife researchers designed to investigate a wide variety of wildlife movement questions. Volunteer partners host and operate receiving stations across the world that autonomously listen for flying migratory animals equipped with transmitters called nanotags. Researchers rely on the receivers for movement data for a diversity of tagged wildlife, including birds, bats, and insects. Despite widespread interest in wildlife tracking and research within and beyond the Reserve system, this technology has only been used sporadically at a few reserve sites to date.

In 2018, the ACE Basin NERR received private funding to implement a Motus receiver station at partner State Park, which sparked interest from potential collaborators. Since 2020, a multi-reserve project led by the ACE Basin Reserve has held a series of workshops to provide guidance and assistance on siting, construction, installation, and interpretation of Motus sites at participating reserves. In this webinar, project lead Jessica Kinsella will share how this effort has created new partnerships and positioned the Reserve as a regional leader for the Motus initiative, while enabling partners to increase their contribution to coastal bird research and engage their end users in coastal bird conservation and management.

Professional workers, especially in health care and education, are among the least happy, most burnt-out categories of workers. This should be surprising, given that what they do is inherently meaningful, and that the content of their work is interesting and engages skills that most people find intrinsically rewarding to exercise. I argue that the discontent of so many professionals is likely due to their increasing proletarianization. As professionals become increasingly submerged as employees in large organizations, often operated on a for-profit basis, they suffer losses of professional autonomy. The organizations they work for operate on a managerial logic that disdains and suppresses the kinds of local, personal, practical knowledge that professionals cultivate and need to exercise to do their jobs well. I explore the contrasts between the kind of knowledge managers use to pursue organizational goals and the kind of knowledge professionals use in their everyday interactions with patients, students, and clients, to explain the pervasive burnout of professionals in large organizations.

November theme: Chilling out. November brings much colder temperatures, leaves are off the trees and only those hardly birds and mammals are out and about. This month we explore the ways that animals and plants chill out for the winter, go into dormancy or find a cozy spot to spend their time.

November 1st & 5th – Preparing for dormancy
The word dormancy originally meant to be in a resting position or to sleep. By November, many of the plants and animals in SE Michigan are entering a dormancy stage. Take a hike and look for evidence that plants have started their dormant phase and learn how this resting stage prepares them for spring growth.

Matthaei Botanical Gardens is hosting free guided nature walks on select Wednesdays and Sundays. These walks are FREE, and no registration is required. Wednesday walks begin at 5:30 pm. Sunday walks begin at 1:00 pm. We recommend gathering inside the lobby of Matthaei Botanical Gardens about 10 minutes before the start.

University of Minnesota associate professor Chris Faulk, PhD, studies functional genomics in the department of animal science.

Dr. Faulk's Lab focus is on Epigenetics, Aging, Evolution, and Environmental Science. Dr. Faulk's lab statement, "My research is multi-scale with studies at the molecular genetic level in multiple organisms and human populations. I use computational methods to predict changes to the epigenome caused aging, dietary interventions, and environmental toxicants. I focus on both gene promoters and repetitive elements. My research models, the mouse and human, are primarily impacted by dietary shifts in nutrient availability and quantity simultaneously with toxicant exposure. My data analysis leverages massively parallel sequencing with comparative genomics to reveal regions evolutionarily selected for environmental plasticity."

Great Lakes Seminar Series: Bridging Western and Indigenous knowledges through University-Indigenous Community research partnerships: Sharing guidance from the “Seasons of Research” Framework (November 14, 2023 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/113938 113938-21831939@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, November 14, 2023 12:00pm
Location: Dana Natural Resources Building
Organized By: Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research (CIGLR)

This seminar provides guidance on creating and navigating the pathway to equitable, inclusive research partnerships. What is considered to be ‘normal’ research is in the midst of transformation as participatory, community-engaged research is no longer the exception but the expectation. With the realization that a diversity of stakeholders, rights holders, and research sponsors require more than can be accomplished by the solo investigator, how might one engage in this work in a good way? In this talk, I begin by explaining the term ‘bridging’ as an adaptable/adoptable concept and practice between Western and Indigenous knowledge systems. Then, following a brief description of my research foundations in fish, risk, and health, I outline our current research landscape with/by/as the Anishinaabe Ojibwa. As an example, I emphasize one project in particular that relies on guidance provided by the “Seasons of Research” framework, created in partnership with the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Lake Superior Band of Ojibwa. In this socio-ecological systems research project (NSF AWARD #2009258), we are examining tribal landscape system (TLS) dynamics impacted by anthropogenic toxic contamination and climate-related changes. I conclude by proposing future directions and good relations for strengthening research partnerships as a shared priority commitment.

Join Planet Blue Student Leaders (PBSL)and Ann Arbor's Common Cycle for a winter bike repair pop-up on the Diag on November 16th!

As a part of our "Sustainability & You" week, all students are welcome to receive free help to fix up their bikes before winter! Common Cycle will be there to help you learn how to take care of your bike and how to ride safely through the winter months. Our stand will run from 11am-1pm in the Diag.

The alternative Weather location is outside the Dentistry School, facing N University Ave.

If you're not able to make it, check out the UMich Student social media pages that week to access resources for winter cycling and free bike maintenance in Ann Arbor! Additional Common Cycle and PBSL resources can be found in the links for this event.

No reservations or payments are needed. Free and open to all students. Note that this may result in lines and longer wait times for support. Expected for students to remain there while their bike is being worked on and to aid in said process-no experience in repair necessary, just a willingness to learn!

DPSS will be promoting on-campus property registration, bike safety, and resources for bike theft prevention, with a limited distribution of U-locks upon registration to UM affiliates who do not already have one.

Special thanks to Ann Arbor Common Cycle-learn more about them in the attached links!

In this talk, Dr. Paige Fischer will explore wildfire as a social-ecological system and its implications for community well-being. Fischer will discuss her work with wildfires and vulnerable populations, her motivation for taking her domestic work abroad, and how her understanding of resilience was transformed after her time learning from affected communities in Chile.

Dr. Paige Fischer is associate professor of environment and sustainability at the University of Michigan. Her research focuses on human adaptation to climate and natural hazards such as wildfire in forested areas. Her work looks at the capacity of individuals and organizations to adapt to environmental change through individual and collective natural resource management and environmental conservation actions. Her work has focused on the American West and has recently expanded to south-central Chile, where wildfires are becoming more frequent and severe. Fischer is recognized as one of 50 female leading scholars in the international field of fire science.

This event is co-sponsored by the International Institute, Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, and the Office of Global Public Health.

Webinar: Estuaries past, present and future: Using elevations and historical maps to characterize estuarine habitats across 30 National Estuarine Research Reserves (November 30, 2023 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/112921 112921-21829783@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, November 30, 2023 2:00pm

Estuaries are coastal gems. To protect and restore them, we need a clear understanding of exactly where they are, where they were, and where they could be in the future. A team led by the National Estuarine Research Reserves (NERRs) recently completed an ambitious effort to map estuarine habitat in and around the 30 NERRs. They used a powerful combination of NOAA resources for elevation and tidal datums to map the reach of tides, historical topographic sheets generated by NOAA’s predecessor agency to map past habitat distributions, and compared this to mapping from USFWS’s National Wetland Inventory (NWI).

Elevation-based mapping revealed that estuary extent is greater than currently mapped in NWI. At more than two-thirds of the Reserves, the team detected tidal forests missed by NWI. Comparison of historical maps to NWI revealed dramatically greater loss of tidal wetland extent on the Pacific coast than in other regions. The results of this investigation suggest that multiple mapping methods complement each other and should be integrated to provide a more accurate understanding of estuaries—past, present and future.

There is an all too common misconception that environmental justice law is vague and toothless. In fact, environmental justice law is nearly ubiquitous and has been significantly altering environmental decision-making norms. This talk will address the ways that environmental justice law has already shaped and may in the future shape Great Lakes environmental protection and restoration. Specifically, the talk will define environmental justice law, summarize its history, and go through Great Lakes case studies that illustrate how this legal framework alters decision-making regarding pollution control, natural resources management, and energy regulation.

Linking plant community dynamics to ecosystem processes has long been a central theme in ecological modeling. In this seminar, Bill Currie will present the development and applications of the Mondrian model, which was designed to link across four levels of organization in coastal wetlands: individual plant physiology, plant population dynamics, plant community shifts including invasive species, and ecosystem biogeochemistry including C, N and P cycling. Mondrian is an individual-based model in which spatially-explicit plant competition for resources causes emergent population and community dynamics, which respond to wetland N and P inflows while also driving ecosystem N and P cycling including nutrient retention. At the same time it integrates the effects of dynamic water levels, hydroperiod, and water residence time on both plant survival and ecosystem biogeochemistry, including decomposition, C storage, nitrification and denitrification. It has been used to study clonal plant competition broadly from a basic-science perspective as well as the integrated effects of water level and nutrient inflows on the joint outcomes of wetland C budgets and the success or failure of plant invasions in Great Lakes coastal wetlands. The model has also been used in an adaptive management framework to simulate the outcomes of management practices including burning, mowing, and herbicide to control invasive cattails and Phragmites. The Mondrian model was designed to be highly flexible for use by different research groups for a range of research questions and is available open-source.

“Mixing Paint…it’s all the same color:” Work-Family Conflict during the COVID-19 Pandemic (January 12, 2024 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/116537 116537-21837526@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, January 12, 2024 1:30pm
Location: Ross School of Business
Organized By: Interdisciplinary Committee on Organizational Studies - ICOS

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly altered work and family lives. Whereas some couples faltered under the pressure of balancing work and family during the height of the pandemic, others thrived. Shaping these experiences was the widespread adoption of remote work which gave rise to various possible work from home configurations among couples. Further, the closures of daycare centers and schools created added strain on the lives of dual-earning couples with young children. This presentation is two-fold. First, using survey data from August 2020-March 2021 with both members of 343 heterosexual, dual-earning U.S. couples, I examine whether the extent of remote work at home distinctly affects men and women’s own behavioral work-family conflict, and how this crosses over to their partner’s behavioral work-family conflict. I also discuss if the actor and partner effects vary for parents and childfree couples. Most work-family conflict research uses perceptual scales to measure effects of time, energy, strain, and behavior (e.g., Carlson et al. 2000; Greenhaus et al. 2006; Netemeyer et al. 1996). However, long-standing perceptual measures have not distinguished “between subjective and behavioral role conflict” (Clark et al. 2019: 40). This study provides a unique opportunity to analyze specific instances of work-family conflict (e.g., less engaged, less attentive, frustrated, or short-tempered with family or co-workers), regardless of expected behaviors in either domain. Second, using interview data from 37 dyads (subset of survey dyads), I provide a phenomenological account of how the couples made sense of their pandemic work/family experiences. Using data from both spouses, an inductive account of what work-family conflict "looked" like in the family reveals that some view it as compartmentalized and others as unified. Others framed managing work-family conflict either as heroes, responding to a serious, often unexpected situation that requires immediate reaction or a victim, which involves or results in someone or something adversely affected by an external force or agent. Those couples that are emotionally close seem to work together as a team and communicate about their needs. Those that are emotionally distant couples seem to value work above family, leaving each spouse to cope on their own. By examining what couples were saying and doing, we can consider how work-family conflict manifests within the context of COVID-19.

Wetlands perform critical ecosystem services, including nutrient reduction, flood mitigation, and biodiversity habitat. More than 90% of wetlands in Ohio have been destroyed and most major water bodies in the state now experience annual harmful cyanobacterial blooms. The H2Ohio Initiative in part funds statewide wetland restoration to improve water quality through nutrient reduction. Dr. Newell is one of the H2Ohio Wetland Monitoring Program leads, monitoring water quality at newly constructed wetland or restored wetlands. This talk will focus on nutrient reductions at two wetlands: Brooks Park flowing into Buckeye Lake, a hypereutrophic lake experiencing annual harmful algal blooms. Brooks Park wetland was built at the junction of Murphy’s Run creek into Buckeye Lake, draining a very small watershed (1.2 sq. miles) and behaves as either a flow-through wetland or a coastal wetland depending on precipitation. Preliminary data from the first year of monitoring indicates that the wetland is a sink for total nitrogen (>3000 lbs/yr), but a small source of ammonium (~44 lbs/yr). However, the wetland is a very small source of total phosphorus (~42 lbs/yr), while a sink for soluble reactive phosphorus (~16 lbs/yr). The 90-acre Burntwood-Langenkamp Wetland Conservation Area is located at the confluence of Burntwood and Coldwater Creeks in Mercer County. This site is a former corn/soybean field in the Grand Lake Saint Marys watershed. Water enters the site from Burntwood Creek (BWC) through pump and overflow and then flows through a series of settling ponds and vegetated flats that extend for over a mile. BWC drains approximately 5,700 acres of watershed land and can hold approximately 20 million gallons of water. Total Nitrogen (TN) concentrations at the outflow are approximately 73% lower than the TN inflow concentrations, which average over 16.3 mg N/L for the year 2023. An approximate annual decrease thus far of ~55% in SRP concentration has been seen between the inflow and outflow with outflow concentrations averaging 0.044 mg P/L. Nutrient load reduction will likely vary as the wetlands mature, but data from the first year indicate that both wetlands are already performing a vital ecosystem service.

In the months and years to come, the utility industry should anticipate an increasing number of regulatory commissions to begin ruling on third-party access to utility data. Several state orders are currently examining the implications of making utility data more accessible to third parties and customers. Some states are going further and broadening the data pool to include more than just customer-metered end-use data. Whichever position a state may take in democratizing its data, it should do so in a way which will encourage customer adoption and improve the marketing and sales of distributed energy resources (DER) and other energy solutions to help states reach their net-zero carbon goals. A result of democratizing the grid utility data will open new markets and accelerate innovations that will help states achieve their carbon reduction goals.

Jason is a seasoned business development leader responsible for connecting East Coast utilities with our deep industry knowledge and capabilities. In this role, he applies his extensive consultative sales, marketing, and strategy leadership to the energy industry. Meaningful engagement has become a catchphrase in public participation. Its characteristics are assumed to be self-evident yet many struggle with its implementation and, until recently, there has been surprisingly little work shedding light on how to achieve it. The NERRS Science Collaborative, through its participation in the Reserve System, has observed how meaningful engagement is foundational to effective collaborative science and is a frequent discussion topic among NERRS project teams.

Seeking to unpack the dimensions of meaningful engagement, the Science Collaborative has supported research that draws on the experiences and insights of collaborative science teams. The research aims to answer questions such as: What exactly does meaningful engagement mean in practice? What are the tell-tale signs when it is being achieved, and when it is not? What factors help advance it? What are the challenges to realizing it, and how might those challenges be addressed?

This webinar will describe the overall research project, share preliminary findings based on interviews with collaborative science project team members and reserve partners, and highlight how intended products can benefit collaborative science teams and others.

Environmental Sustainability and Resiliency in Nuclear Energy—Let’s talk about waste and accidents (January 26, 2024 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/116705 116705-21837834@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, January 26, 2024 4:00pm

Environmental concerns have been a major hurdle to expanding the use of nuclear energy. More than ten states have laws to restrict new construction of nuclear reactors until a spent fuel disposal plan is developed. In parallel, the public perception has been significantly impacted by several high-profile accidents, as well as contaminations at former nuclear weapon production sites in the US. On the other hand, nuclear communities have been pioneering environmental science and technologies, establishing environmental impact assessment methodologies, waste isolation technologies, and waste/effluent regulations. Nuclear waste management is in stark contrast to the other industries that tend to rely on a ‘dilution-is-the-solution’ approach, which has resulted in wide-spread contaminations globally.

This presentation provides the environmental science perspective of nuclear energy with a particular focus on waste management and accidents. I will first talk about the historical overview of waste management, including past contaminations and the comparison with general hazardous waste. I will then present the multi-disciplinary synthesis of the Fukushima Nuclear Power plant accident with a particular focus on the key factors that exacerbated the consequence. Finally, I will discuss the potential applications of environmental science and technologies – though informing the public and empowering communities – toward more sustainable and resilient nuclear energy.

Stuart Batterman (Environmental Health Sciences) and Simone Sagovac (Southwest Detroit Environmental Vision) will discuss the local impact of fugitive dust on air quality. Moderated by Natalie Sampson (University of Michigan Dearborn).

What is fugitive dust: it's when significant atmospheric dust arises from the mechanical disturbance of granular material exposed to the air. Dust generated from these open sources is termed "fugitive" because it is not discharged to the atmosphere in a confined flow stream. Common sources of fugitive dust include unpaved roads, agricultural tilling operations, aggregate storage piles, and heavy construction operations.

Heat & Health: Co-Producing Solutions for Passive Cooling in Self-Built Housing (February 2, 2024 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/117085 117085-21838620@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 2, 2024 12:00pm

Climate change is already having dramatic effects on human health and well-being. How are we adapting to these new realities and mitigating health risks for the world’s most vulnerable communities? Join us for the third seminar of the series: Climate Vulnerability & Health — How are we Responding?

In this talk, Dr. Pimentel Walker and Dr. Junghans will explore innovative housing solutions for climate resilience in self-built settlements in São Paulo, Brazil and Bucaramanga, Colombia.

Full description:
Heat is a growing health risk aggravated by expanding urbanization, an increase in high-temperature extremes, and demographic changes. Communities living in precarious settlements are disproportionately vulnerable to extreme heat. Although building techniques to improve indoor thermal comfort can be an adaptation option, we lack design research tailored to the realities of self-built homes. Design research for passive cooling frequently stems from building standards in the Global North. In the Global South, these strategies target middle-class buildings, with higher-end formal construction built by design professionals and engineers.

This pilot project conducted an ethnographic account of auto-construction practices and constraints in two informal and precarious settlements in São Paulo, Brazil, and Bucaramanga, Colombia. The computational simulations identified interventions that theoretically improve occupant thermal comfort by increasing air velocity and lowering indoor temperatures, ultimately reducing heat stress. Our collaborative research in Burkina Faso has already implemented interventions, and it is in the assessment stage. However, are all identified passive cooling strategies equally feasible and responsive to community expectations? Working with community members and their advocacy networks, we plan to co-develop passive cooling strategies that are desirable and achievable, amplifying the voices of low-income residents in the policy agendas for climate and housing justice.

Winter precipitation (rain and snowfall) has widespread impacts on communities through regional ecology, hydrological planning, and socioeconomic effects. In this presentation, I will feature important findings from winter weather regime-based studies leveraging precipitation observations from a long-term, ground-based instrument suite in the Northern Great Lakes region. Realistic estimates of rain and snowfall in weather forecasting and climate models are challenging due to uncertainties in cloud and precipitation parameterization schemes. Additionally, remote-sensing observations require assumptions about hydrometeor microphysical and radiative properties. High temporal resolution, multi-instrument observations of clouds and precipitation can help better constrain processes in models and refine retrieval assumptions, leading to more accurate quantification of accumulation. I will highlight the advantage of utilizing long-term observations to examine key physical and dynamical precipitation processes through the lens of regime partitioning. Precipitation regimes are determined using observations of macrophysical and microphysical properties, large-scale environmental conditions, and thermodynamic profile characteristics. Key findings demonstrate that regime-dependent characteristics of precipitation lead to distinct differences in frequency, intensity, and phase, microphysical properties, and overall accumulation. Additionally, I will demonstrate how winter precipitation regimes in the Northern Great Lakes region are tied to significant seasonal and subseasonal, synoptic, and thermodynamic conditions such as atmospheric blocking and anomalous moisture transport (atmospheric rivers).

Why Don't Christians Care About Climate Change? Follwing Jesus in a Warming World (February 12, 2024 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/118218 118218-21840660@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, February 12, 2024 7:00pm

Climate activist Kyle Meyaard-Schaap addresses the apathy of the Christian community in the face of the climate crisis. Drawing on years of equipping Christians to work for climate action, he will show how the trend is beginning to shift. More and more young Christians are waking up to the realities of climate change. They want to help, but they're not sure how. Through stories from the field, theological and scriptural exploration, and practical advice, Meyaard-Schaap offers hope to people paralyzed by the scale of the crisis, helping us turn our paralysis into meaningful action. His book, Following Jesus in a Warming World, is a field guide for Christian climate action—one grounded not in a sense of guilt or drudgery, but in the joy of caring for creation. Rev. Meyaard-Schaap will share his lecture, followed by a time of conversation with those who attend.

Location: Tisch Hall
Organized By: Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies

Inspired by Earth System scientists’ models of global environmental catastrophe, luminaries of “planetary history” proclaim the collapse of the divide separating natural and human history and, simultaneously, define the planetary scale as incommensurable with experience. This talk explores an alternative approach that reconstructs Earth history through biographies of individual organisms. From “life histories” recorded in the tusks of mastodons and mammoths, paleobiologists investigate the drivers of species extinction at the end of the Ice Age. The scalar perspective that emerges from the interaction of fossilized animal traces and a scientific career offers a planetary imaginary individuals may relate to.

Perrin works at the intersection of environmental history and Science & Technology Studies to understand how the global-scale environment became an existential crisis. He is the author of The Postwar Origins of the Global Environment: How the United Nations Built Spaceship Earth (2018). His current project, “The Holocene Is History: Human Nature at the End of the Last Ice Age,” received a Mellon New Directions Fellowship for retraining in the paleosciences. It explores how scientists from the late-nineteenth century to the present assembled fragmentary traces of the past to tell morally and politically fraught stories about the origins of civilization.

This event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

The health benefits of nature are attracting increasing popular and scientific attention, but specific impacts of global change on human well-being remain poorly quantified and difficult to predict. In this talk, Dr. Ricketts will describe ongoing efforts to estimate health impacts of land-use change in developing countries, using a unique dataset including 800,000 children in more than 40 countries.

To date, his research has revealed that nearby forest cover and protected areas improve several dimensions of children’s health, including water-borne disease, stunting, diet diversity, and malaria. In all cases, the impact of nature on health outcomes is stronger for more vulnerable populations. These and other studies can help to identify when and where nature conservation can constitute an investment in public health and social justice.

This event is co-sponsored by the School for Environment and Sustainability, the International Institute, the Office of Global Public Health, and the Institute for Global Change Biology.

Phasing out fossil fuels is a primary means to fight climate change, but it alone is not enough. Even if all emissions ceased tomorrow, atmospheric CO2 levels are already dangerously high and the climate would keep warming before it eventually stabilizes. We have to reduce or “capture” legacy CO2 to avert disaster. As the International Panel on Climate Change stated, the *only* way we can meet our climate goal is to use carbon capture in our climate change fighting tool kit.

Many of the products that we use every day are made with carbon. Treating legacy CO2 as a resource with economic value rather than a pollutant allows us to generate revenue while also fighting climate change.

However, not all uses or types of captured CO2 are equal in terms of environmental or economic benefits. This exhibit includes a video game that helps explain the pros and cons associated with different methods and applications of carbon capture.

Additionally, it also provides examples of two types of carbon removal, an interactive block activity, and sample products made from captured CO2.

Embark on a creative journey in nature with the “Youth Art for the Earth” series—dynamic, eco-centric art experiences crafted for middle and high school students. In these sessions, young artists are encouraged to channel their innermost reflections and establish deep connections with the natural world through the powerful language of art.

The workshops encompass outdoor exploration, indoor collage-making, and dedicated time for reflection and sharing. We believe that developing personal ties to the land fosters a sense of place, care for the environment, and mutual consideration.

Middle and high school youth are invited to participate in one of four Youth Art for the Earth workshops, the completed artworks of which will be displayed during MBGNA’s Youth Art exhibition. These workshops will be offered at no cost, with all necessary materials provided. Please note that registration is required.

Great Lakes Seminar Series: Geodetic Observations of Water Mass Changes in the Great Lakes Basin (March 7, 2024 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/118921 118921-21841892@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 7, 2024 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research (CIGLR)

About the presentation: Changes in total water mass now can be measured by ground-based and space-based observations. As water moved around the planet, the entire Earth deforms as a result of the changing force exerted by the weight of the water, and we can measure these motions using precise GPS observations. The gravity changes due to the changing distribution of water can also be measured using data from the GRACE satellite mission. Because these observations provide estimates of the total water mass changes, we can combine them with measurements of surface water changes to infer changes in groundwater, which are otherwise hard to measure. Previous work showed that the 2012-2019 rise of Great Lakes water levels produced up to about 2 cm of ground subsidence, which we can observe in GPS data. To make accurate estimates of the water mass variations, we will need to fully understand noise and any biases, and carefully remove all signals that are not due to the water (for example, atmospheric pressure loading and glacial isostatic adjustment). We are about 1 year into a 5 year project to make these measurements and fuse them with groundwater modeling and other remote sensing data to develop a groundwater model for the Great Lakes Basin.

About the speaker: Freymueller is an internationally recognized leader in the field of geodesy, and utilizes satellites from the Global Positioning System (GPS) to make highly precise measurements of movement on Earth’s surface. In his far-reaching research activities, he has made discoveries in a wide range of topics including plate tectonics and plate boundary zones, faults dynamics, the continuing rebound of the Earth’s surface from the melting of ice-age glaciers, inflation and deflation of volcanoes, and interpreting how changing water and ice levels deform the Earth. He is particularly well-cited for his work on using GPS to understand the crustal deformation in China, related to the formation of the Himalayas and the Tibetan Plateau.

In addition to his research, Freymueller is the Director of the EarthScope National Office. EarthScope is a long-term, large-scale, NSF-funded program to study the structure and evolution of North America and associated hazards through the deployment of thousands of geophysical instruments throughout the country.

Freymueller also has served the scientific community as the US National Correspondent to the International Association of Geodesy and its representative to the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics, has served terms as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Geophysical Research and Journal of Geodesy, and is currently Editor in Chief of the International Association of Geodesy Symposia Series.
