DEI Lecture Series: The State of Science & the need for STEM Advocacy (November 10, 2022 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/100722 100722-21800288@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, November 10, 2022 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Engineering Office of Culture, Community, and Equity (OCCE)

The future success of businesses, economies, and humanity hinges on the continued advancement of science, and the development of sustainable innovations. This, in turn, is dependent on the inclusion of diverse perspectives inside our organizations and in our communities to bring creative thinking, innovative mindsets and scientific expertise together to solve real-world problems.

Dr. Seth will provide an overview of 3M’s State of Science Index, a global research initiative to uncover what people think of science. Dr. Seth will discuss findings that highlight the importance of reducing real and perceived barriers to science appreciation and STEM education.

The presentation will also include the impact of the pandemic on the public perception of science, key themes that emerge from the 2020-2022 results, and how we can all play a role in science advocacy and advancing diversity in STEM-based fields.

As part of the DEI Lecture Series, we will give away 100 copies of Dr. Seth’s book, The Heart of Science: Engineering Fine Print, to the first 100 registrants. Books will be provided in partnership with the Michigan Engineering Common Reading Experience. To claim your book, please enter your information in the RSVP provided above.

*All proceeds from The Heart of Science Series go to a scholarship for underrepresented minority women in STEM, administered by the Society of Women Engineers.

Images and graphics can be powerful tools to communicate information and enhance text content. But some individuals—such as those who are Blind, low vision, or use read aloud technologies—may miss out on important details if our visuals are not accessible.

This workshop will teach you how to craft effective "alternative text" (alt text) and how to add alt text to images to make them more accessible. We'll also discuss how to describe image content, including diverse humans, in a way that is inclusive and context appropriate.

Participants will learn:
1. What alt text is, why it is important, and who benefits from it.

2. Image types that are not accessible and workarounds.

3. How to craft effective alt text for images based upon the image type and function.

4. Best practices for describing diverse people and situations depicted in images in an inclusive way.

5. How to add alt text to images in Word, Google Docs, PowerPoint, and Google Slides.

Audience:
This is a beginner-level workshop open to any LSA employee, including our student employees.

Format:
This workshop will be conducted virtually on Zoom. Auto-captioning will be enabled and slides will be distributed following the workshop. We strongly recommend using a desktop or laptop computer to join this workshop, as this will make it easier to apply what you learn in practice exercises and to participate in poll questions.

The LSA DEI Office greatly values inclusion and access for all. We are pleased to provide reasonable accommodations to enable your full participation in this workshop. Please contact Jessica McCuaig at jmccuaig@umich.edu if you would like to request disability accommodations or have any questions or concerns.

The Egalitarian Metropolis: Towards an Inclusive Recovery for Detroit

The Great Black Migration to Detroit occurred at the height of the city’s industrial dominance, and yet the result was a deeply divided metropolis where almost all the benefits of subsequent industrial restructuring flowed to white suburbanites and almost all the costs were borne by Black city residents. Today’s Detroit might be more challenged economically, yet paradoxically the chances for an inclusive recovery and a more egalitarian metropolis might be greater. Detroit and Detroit-like cities have the possibility of restructuring to deliver greater equity for their residents than other metros hampered by high housing costs and issues associated with infrastructure, transportation, and education, among other pressing concerns. But can Detroit overcome its racial and economic divisions to become a more egalitarian metropolis?

Over the last five decades the City of Detroit has felt the crisis of mass incarceration first-hand and most acutely. Historian Heather Ann Thompson will discuss the origins of this crisis nationally and locally, its lived impact on city residents as well as on the city itself. From this history, she argues, we can better understand not only why this is the civil and human rights crisis of the 21st century, but what it will take to undo it.
