We often hear that an LSA degree opens many doors, but what exactly does that mean? ‘94 Sociology alum, Seyonne Kang, joins us to share how her LSA degree was the springboard that catapulted her into a series of successful milestones such as getting admitted into grad school, landing in Wall Street, and eventually becoming Partner at Greenspring Associates and then StepStone Group. Seyonne will address your questions, walk you through how to be entrepreneurial with your career choices, explain the hustle and grit required to chart a path into finance, and help students imagine the career possibilities to be had with their LSA degree.

About Seyonne:
Seyonne is a partner at StepStone Group, focusing on venture capital and growth equity investments. Prior to StepStone, Seyonne was a partner with Greenspring Associates, a venture capital and growth equity investment firm that merged with StepStone in 2021. She is responsible for sourcing, monitoring and conducting due diligence for venture/growth funds and direct and secondary investments. Seyonne holds observer seats on the boards of several portfolio companies, in addition to serving on several limited partner advisory committees for early stage venture capital funds. Prior to Greenspring, Seyonne spent seven years in investment management firms with a specialized expertise in private capital. Before moving into investment management, Seyonne spent about a decade on Wall Street in equity research covering software stocks. Most recently at Morgan Stanley, she also worked on equity capital markets’ distribution of IPOs, follow-on offerings, convertible financings and research. She earned an AB with honors from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and an MBA from the University of California at Berkeley. A true believer in the power of a liberal arts and sciences education, Seyonne serves as a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council for the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) at the University of Michigan.

Representative Rashida Tlaib is an American politician and lawyer serving as the U.S. representative for Michigan’s 13th congressional district since 2019. The district includes the western half of Detroit, along with several of its western suburbs and much of the Downriver area. A member of the Democratic Party, Tlaib represented the 6th and 12th districts of the Michigan House of Representatives before her election to Congress. After serving, she worked at Sugar Law Center, a Detroit nonprofit that provides free legal representation for workers. In Congress, Tlaib is tackling one of the most significant drivers of poverty in our country – medical debt. With eight million Americans pushed into poverty due to medical expenses in 2018, Tlaib introduced The Consumer Protection for Medical Debt Collections Act (H.R. 2537), which would prohibit the collection of medical debt for two years, as well as debt from “medically necessary” procedures being included on one’s credit report. It passed the House in 2021 as part of a Comprehensive Debt Collection Act.

The talks, which are free and open to the public, will also be livestreamed on YouTube. U-M students can participate in the series as a one-credit course - look for it as SWK 503 section 001.

This conversation will center on the exploration of all the career pathways down which your major can take you. Charles is working to build a career that expands Black banking in the United States. Today, his nine-to-five is working with investment leaders, and his five-to-nine is spent on his entrepreneurial journey to support Black bankers nationwide.

You should attend this session if you are:
- Interested in a career in private equity or venture capital
- Exploring entrepreneurship as a post-graduation option
- Curious about applying skills and knowledge from your nine-to-five job to fuel other projects and interests.
- The ‘411’ on living and working in Boston

What you’ll gain by attending:
- Inspiration to use your degree to ignite your next steps
- Tips from a recent grad on how to best leverage your LSA education
