Join Weiser Diplomacy Center and American Academy of Diplomacy for a conversation with Ambassador Peter Bodde about his work helping lead international response in disaster areas, especially his involvement in earthquake response in Pakistan and Nepal as well as flood relief and making communities more resilient against flooding.

*From the speaker's bio: *

Peter William Bodde, a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Minister-Counselor, was confirmed by the Senate as the U.S. Ambassador to Libya on November 19, 2015. Ambassador Bodde arrived in Tunis, Tunisia on January 21, 2016 (as Embassy operations in Libya are currently suspended). Ambassador Bodde served as U.S. Ambassador to Nepal from 2012 to September 2015. As such, he received the Secretary’s Distinguished Service Award for his work promoting democracy, protecting U.S. citizens, and helping lead the international response to the April 2015 earthquake in Nepal.

Ambassador Bodde is a strong leader who fosters productive interagency cooperation while maintaining high staff morale. He is particularly well regarded for his extraordinary efforts in mentoring his younger colleagues across interagency lines.

Ambassador Bodde previously served as Assistant Chief of Mission for Assistance Transition at U.S. Embassy Baghdad, Iraq (2010-2012) and as Ambassador to Malawi at U.S. Embassy Lilongwe (2008-2010). He also served as Deputy Chief of Mission at both U.S. Embassy Islamabad, Pakistan (2006-2008) and at U.S. Embassy Kathmandu, Nepal (1994-1997), as well as Principal Officer at the U.S Consulate General in Frankfurt, Germany (2002-2006). Prior to that, he served as Director of the Department’s Office of Management Policy (2000-2002), and as Administrative Counselor at U.S. Embassy New Delhi, India (1997-2000). Ambassador Bodde also served as Administrative Officer at both U.S. Embassy Copenhagen, Denmark (1990-1994) and at U.S. Embassy Sofia, Bulgaria (1988-1990). His early assignments in the Foreign Service included serving as Special Assistant in the Department’s Bureaus of Diplomatic Security and Administration, as Budget and Fiscal Officer, U.S. Embassy Kathmandu, and as Consular Officer, U.S. Embassy Georgetown, Guyana. Before the Foreign Service, he worked for the U.S. International Trade Commission in Washington, D.C.

Ambassador Bodde earned a B.A. from the University of Maryland in 1976. He has won numerous Department performance awards. He speaks German, Bulgarian, and Nepali.

THE 2022 RALPH J. GERSON DISTINGUISHED LECTURER EXPLORES HOW REFORMING SMALL-BUSINESS PROCESSES IN AFRICA WILL BOOST THE CONTINENT’S ECONOMY

Magatte Wade, entrepreneur, author and advocate for African dignity and prosperity through business growth, will deliver the Ralph J. Gerson Distinguished Lecture at 7 p.m. Nov. 10. The discussion will be broadcast via Zoom. (Register here to join the event).

Wade’s talk, “The Heart of the Cheetah: Entrepreneurship and Prosperity in Africa,” will focus on the power of business growth and importance of business-friendly infrastructure, which she sees as critical to innovation and economic flourishing on the continent. As an entrepreneur from Senegal, Wade has decried a lack of business infrastructure and subsequent unemployment as key reasons why many Africans risk their lives to migrate to other countries.

The Ralph J. Gerson Distinguished Lecture gathers the community around the William Davidson Institute at the University of Michigan to celebrate and promote ways businesses can positively impact social challenges. Its transformative speakers bring unique perspectives on economic development, new considerations around innovative business models and informed evaluations of emerging markets.

Wade joins the series’ two past lecturers — Nobel Prize-winning Economist Sir Angus Deaton and Kevin Lobo, Chairman and CEO of Stryker Corp. — in her work highlighting economic acceleration through business tools.

“Magatte Wade is an outspoken advocate for the benefits that profitable businesses bring to an economy,” said WDI President Paul Clyde. “She is a successful entrepreneur who understands the value and importance of business in the development of an economy. Considering WDI’s mission of equipping economic decision makers in emerging countries with the tools of commercial success, it’s hard to think of a stronger advocate with a more relevant background than Wade.”

Wade was named one of Forbes’ “20 Youngest Power Women in Africa,” a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum at Davos, and a “Leading Woman in Wellness” award-winner with the Global Wellness Summit. She’s the Director of the Atlas Network’s Center for Africa Prosperity, a member of the Board of Directors of Conscious Capitalism Inc., and a member of the Advisory Board of the Whole Planet Foundation with Whole Foods Market.

As a TED Global Africa Fellow, her TED Talk, titled “Why it’s so hard to start a business in Africa — and how to change it,” has nearly 650,000 views. In her talk, Wade draws a clear and definitive thread between poverty reduction and business creation — asserting that the solution to poverty is making it easier for small businesses to start, run and thrive. In it, she describes how she came to this conclusion: “I have this attitude in life. Something is wrong, find a way to fix it. That’s why I start the businesses that I start, usually consumer brands, that have embedded in them the very best of my African culture.”

Wade describes what it’s like for her to run these businesses in Senegal, navigating the complicated and problematic laws and processes. “It’s like swimming through molasses,” she said. Knowing the impact these stifling rules have on business growth, Wade advocates for easing these restrictions and creating systems that promote private economic development. Not only does changing these laws make a major difference in business success, she explained, but shining a light on them can shift the outlook Africans have about their own capabilities and potential.

Her new book, “The Heart of the Cheetah,” will be released soon.

Register to watch Wade’s speech live on Zoom at 7 p.m. Nov. 10.

Crossing Borders and Cuisines: A New Flavor of Sustainable Tourism (November 16, 2022 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/100425 100425-21799890@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, November 16, 2022 5:00pm
Location: Ross School of Business
Organized By: William Davidson Institute

Culinary-focused travel has become a hot trend within the tourism sector in recent years. Tourists increasingly prefer to let their taste buds decide how and where they travel. For cities and countries looking to market themselves, culinary tourism has become an essential and powerful branding element.

But can this kind of travel be about much more than food? Yigal Schleifer, the co-founder and editor-in-chief of Culinary Backstreets, will tackle that question and more during a talk hosted by the William Davidson Institute at the University of Michigan. The discussion, “Crossing Borders and Cuisines: A New Flavor of Sustainable Tourism,” is slated for 5:00–6:00 PM, Nov. 16 in R1230 of the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business. The session is free and open to the public. It also will be broadcast via Zoom; click to register.

Schleifer will explore how Culinary Backstreets, which provides tours in a dozen cities around the world, uses food-oriented travel to promote cross-cultural communication and sustainable tourism for more impactful experiences. Created in 2012, Culinary Backstreets covers the local and traditional food scene and offers immersive small group culinary walks in cities including Istanbul, Lisbon, Mexico City, Tbilisi, Tokyo, Barcelona and a half dozen more. The talk will also look at how the COVID crisis has impacted culinary travel and how this sector can be rebuilt with an eye towards sustainability.

Between 2002 and 2010, Schleifer was based in Istanbul, where he worked as a correspondent for The Christian Science Monitor and the German Press Agency (dpa). While in Istanbul he also co-founded Istanbul Eats, an award-winning blog about the city’s local food scene, and co-wrote a guidebook of the same name. He also launched “Istanbul Calling,” a blog about Turkish foreign and domestic affairs. Schleifer’s work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Foreign Policy, Ha’aretz, The Times (London) and several other publications.

Schleifer was an advisory board member for the Livelihoods Innovation through Food Entrepreneurship (LIFE) Project, which supported and encouraged people to engage across cultures through entrepreneurship and job creation in the food sector. Since 2017, WDI’s Entrepreneurship Development Center has worked on the U.S. government-funded LIFE Project, in collaboration with the Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE), IDEMA, Union Kitchen and the Stimson Center.

China and the Global human rights system (November 30, 2022 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/101661 101661-21802326@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, November 30, 2022 5:00pm

In recent years, China’s human rights practices have been the subject of mounting international attention and concern. Crackdowns on protesters, the situation in Xinjiang, and other developments have raised questions about international actors’ willingness and ability to address human rights issues within China. This virtual panel will examine China’s relationship with the global human rights system. Three noted experts will share insights drawn from academic study, civil society engagement, and diplomatic practice. They will discuss how China advances its objectives relating to human rights within international forums, examining how China promotes its ideas and seeks to shape the institutional design of bodies such as the UN Human Rights Council, the UN Security Council, and the Chinese-led South-South Forum on Human Rights. They will analyze how China has sought to constrain these and other key human rights institutions and mechanisms and the practical effects of its efforts on human rights behavior, and share insights about the challenges and opportunities for diplomacy and for civil society engagement to address China’s human rights practices and those of other authoritarian states.

Cydney K. Seigerman is a Ph.D. candidate in the Integrative Conservation & Anthropology program at the University of Georgia, where they work with Dr. Don Nelson and are a member of the Human Environmental Change Lab (HECL). Cydney is an NSF Graduate Research Fellow and a research scholar at the Cearense Meteorological and Water Resources Foundation (Funceme) in Ceará, Brazil.

Cydney's research incorporates methods from the critical social sciences, natural sciences, and theatre/performance studies to explore human-technology-environment relations. Their dissertation work explores how socionatural (i.e., interrelated sociopolitical, environmental, and technological) processes shape and are shaped by the lived experience of water insecurity in Ceará, northeast Brazil.

Before pursuing their Ph.D., Cydney studied chemistry and Spanish language and literature at the University of Michigan, graduating from the Residential College and Honors College. They then relocated to Madrid, Spain, where they served as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant, studied acting at the theater school La Lavandería, and ran competitively.

Amali Tower is the founder and executive director of Climate Refugees. She has extensive global experience in refugee protection, refugee resettlement and in forced migration and displacement contexts, having worked globally for numerous NGOs, the UN Refugee Agency and the US Refugee Admissions Program. Years of interviewing refugees fleeing conflict afforded her the chance to hear their stories of also fleeing climate change. Through this, Climate Refugees was born. She has conducted country and regional case studies and research in climate-induced displacement contexts, including in urban and camp settings. Her research on climate, conflict and displacement in the Lake Chad Basin in Africa’s Sahel was presented as evidence of loss and damage at COP 26 in Glasgow. Amali serves displaced populations as an experienced defender and her clients as a partner and advisor. She developed her work ethic, world views and deep commitment to forcibly displaced populations through a lived experience of instability, and as an immigrant and migrant. She’s born of that education, life in multiple countries, and also those at Columbia University, where she has a Master of International Affairs focused in Human Rights from the School of International and Public Affairs, and a BA in International Development Studies from UCLA. She resides in New York City.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: CEW+

For more info and to apply: https://www.cew.umich.edu/advocacy-initiatives/twink-frey-visiting-social-activist-program

Each year the Twink Frey Visiting Social Activist (TFVSA) Program brings to CEW+ a social justice activist whose work affects women and recognizes gender equity issues. One goal of the program is to build the capacity and effectiveness of social activists by giving the TFVSA time, space, and support to work on a project that would not be possible under the activist’s usual working circumstances.

The TFVSA program gives the selected TFVSA time for reflection, research, planning, and writing related to their area of activism. Each TFVSA is required to work on a project that will advance their future work and potentially benefit other activists.

If selected, the applicant is invited to reside near campus for up to one month or make intermittent visits to Ann Arbor and work remotely. The 2024 residency will take place during the winter semester with a presentation of their project the following fall semester at the CEW+ Annual Advocacy Symposium. The activist receives a $10,000 stipend to cover their expenses while in Ann Arbor. Travel expenses to and from Ann Arbor are separately reimbursed by the endowment fund.

ELIGIBILITY

The TFVSA program supports activists whose work addresses gender equity issues that affect the lives of women and/or girls. The program defines social justice and equity programs broadly to include activism in such areas as housing, employment, income support, food security, education, violence, child care, health care, and employer benefits like paid sick leave and retirement income.

About the Vandenberg Lecture
The Meijer Family established the Vandenberg Fund in 2017 to honor U.S. Senator Arthur Vandenberg, who served the State of Michigan in the U.S. Senate from 1928-1951. Senator Vandenberg forged bipartisan support for our country's most significant and enduring foreign policies of the twentieth century, including the Truman Doctrine, the Marshall Plan, NATO and the creation of the United Nations. The Vandenberg Lecture Fund has since featured some of the world's leaders in foreign policy including U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Ambassador Samantha Power, among others.

Dr. Maya Bizri is an Assistant Professor in Psychiatry and Psychosomatic Medicine and a global mental health consultant. She also holds an MPH from Tufts. After starting her clinical career in Beirut in 2019, a time where the country was undergoing political, economic and COVID-19 challenges, and having started the first psycho oncology program mid-pandemic and Beirut blast, her interests shifted to global mental health. More particularly, Dr Bizri is interested in addressing the mental health of healthcare workers in disaster, conflict and low-resource settings. Most recently, she was on a medical mission to Ukraine with MedGlobal to pilot a training in trauma-informed care for healthcare workers. Clinically, Dr Bizri's interests lie in delirium management, psychiatry for the medically ill, psycho-oncology and transplant psychiatry.

The Human Question: Jewish Thought in the Anthropocene (September 28, 2023 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/111305 111305-21826644@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, September 28, 2023 4:00pm
Location: Haven Hall
Organized By: Judaic Studies

"The field of modern Jewish thought has been slow to treat climate change as a significant area of inquiry. This reluctance stems from the fact that modern Jewish thought remains largely beholden to an increasingly untenable presumption that the human being is distinct from the non-human world. This outmoded view has stubbornly endured, I argue, because it underpins a prominent strategy for positioning Judaism favorably over against Christianity and other religious traditions. I locate the origins of this influential strategy in nineteenth-century German Jewish philosophy and then trace the manner in which Hermann Cohen embeds it into the basic foundations of the field. Finally, I show how the anthropocentric framing of this approach has persisted in Jewish thought, even as Cohen’s own project has been subsequently critiqued and repudiated. For modern Jewish thought to fully engage with the environmental humanities, it will need to reckon with this lingering legacy."

About the speaker: Robert Erlewine is a Professor of Religious Studies in the Department of History & Philosophy at Eastern Michigan University and the director of the Eastern Michigan University Center for Jewish Studies. Professor Erlewine is a scholar of modern Jewish thought with a particular interest in the German-Jewish tradition and its legacy in North America and beyond. He has published two monographs, Monotheism and Tolerance (2010) and Judaism and the West (2016), with Indiana University Press, and he edited and introduced an anthology of Abraham Joshua Heschel’s writings with Plough Press in 2021. He has published essays in a variety of academic journals including The Journal of Religion, Association for Jewish Studies Review, Harvard Theological Review, Modern Judaism, and Jewish Studies Quarterly.
