Organized By: DCMB Seminar Series

Abstract:

Most disease associated genomic variants have relatively modest effects on target gene expression in reporter or CRISPR perturbation assays. In addition, enhancer disruption in vivo often has surprisingly weak phenotypic consequences. I will present machine learning (ML) methods (gkm-SVM and DNN) which we use to learn the complex transcription factor combinations that control enhancer activity and cell fate. I will then use these methods to develop a quantitative model for enhancer activity which shows that while promoter knockdown has robust effects on target gene expression, individual enhancer knockdown is often weaker and affects temporal transition dynamics, but not the final steady state. This model provides an explanation of the paradox of how enhancer variation can be strongly associated with disease risk while having individually weak effects, by showing in detail how gene regulatory networks control developmentally important and disease relevant cell state transitions and cancer.

A divisor on a graph is an assignment of integer weights to each of the vertices. One assignment is considered linearly equivalent to another assignment if it can be transformed into it by a series of legal moves called chip-firing moves. The Picard group of a graph, named based on its relationship to the Picard group of a scheme, is defined as the free abelian group of divisors on the graph up to linear equivalence. This group will be the central focus of the talk, and we'll compute Pic(G) for some classes of graphs G. We'll also define the rank of a divisor and a related graph invariant called gonality.

This workshop helps enhance the mentoring relationship between the student and faculty mentor by facilitating the development of shared expectations. Mentors and mentees work independently in separate sessions to identify their own objectives and styles, and consider strategies for dealing with possible challenges. Then, student-faculty pairs work together to develop a written mentoring plan as a means of codifying some of the most important elements (needs, goals, mutual expectations) of a two-way mentoring relationship. Over 85 percent of Rackham doctoral students who have written mentoring plans report those plans to be useful.
Faculty who have attended a MORE workshop in the past should feel free to join the workshop only for the student-faculty work together (the last hour of the workshop). Registration is still required of both the faculty and the student.
Optional additional time for developing a mentoring plan is available from 12:00 to 1:00 pm.
Registration is required at https://myumi.ch/gN4wZ
Separate registration for students is available at: https://myumi.ch/J8MXg

Creating Inclusive Environments for Diverse Religious, Spiritual, and Secular Worldviews (February 14, 2023 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/102510 102510-21804157@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, February 14, 2023 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Rackham Graduate School

When you hear the word “diversity”, what comes to mind? If you’re like most people, religion wasn’t your first thought, or even your second one at that. We live in a world, work jobs, attend classes, and are a part of organizations that are religiously diverse, and yet this identity is often forgotten or labeled as too taboo to talk about with others. In order to be effective leaders, influencers, and DEI practitioners, we have to critically examine how we are cultivating communities that both value and engage diverse religious, spiritual, and secular (RSS) worldviews. Join us for this interactive workshop as we explore how RSS worldviews shape our experiences and the spaces that we occupy.
Learning Objectives:

Examine one’s own RSS worldview
Explore how RSS worldviews have shaped one’s own and other’s experiences
Brainstorm strategies to engage diverse RSS worldviews to cultivate inclusive communities

This workshop is designed for University of Michigan master’s students, doctoral students, and postdoctoral fellows. For faculty and staff, please contact rackhampdeworkshops@umich.edu to see if we can accommodate your attendance.
Registration is required at https://myumi.ch/P1ydg.

Join staff and peer facilitators from Rackham’s Graduate Student and Program Consultation Services for a listening circle to process and share thoughts about Monday’s devastating shooting at Michigan State University.
The listening circle is a versatile restorative practice that can be used proactively to develop relationships and build community, or reactively to respond to wrongdoing, harm, conflicts, and problems. Circles give people an opportunity to speak and listen to one another in an atmosphere of safety, decorum, and equality. The circle process allows people to tell their stories and offer their own perspectives. It is not a discussion or a debate.

Research-Based Strategies for Combating “Impostor Syndrome” (February 16, 2023 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/102511 102511-21804158@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, February 16, 2023 3:00pm
Location: Pierpont Commons
Organized By: Rackham Graduate School

Have you ever succeeded at an academic task even though you were convinced that you wouldn’t do well? Do you dread others evaluating your work or avoid opportunities for critical feedback? Do you have trouble accepting praise or acknowledging your accomplishments? Do you worry about being exposed as an academic fraud? Have you ever questioned whether you belong at the University of Michigan? Thoughts such as these are hallmarks of impostor thinking and are more common among graduate students than you realize. However, they don’t have to overshadow your academic and professional journey.
Join us for this interactive, 90-minute workshop, during which we will share insights from the impostorism scholarship and provide research-based strategies for combating your impostor thoughts and feelings.
By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

Define impostorism and highlight the variety of ways individuals and groups are most impacted.
Discuss individual and system/institutional-level factors that contribute to impostorism.
Recognize maladaptive thought patterns and coping strategies that exacerbate impostor experiences.
Access tools and strategies to help interrupt your impostor cycle (all participants will receive a digital strategies workbook).

This workshop is designed for University of Michigan master’s students, doctoral students, and postdoctoral fellows. For faculty and staff, please contact rackhampdeworkshops@umich.edu to see if we can accommodate your attendance.
Registration is required at https://myumi.ch/XV63d.

ChatGPT and Writing Assignments (February 16, 2023 3:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/104492 104492-21809447@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, February 16, 2023 3:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Sweetland Center for Writing

The artificial intelligence app ChatGPT has been the subject of multiple articles, blogs, and conversation in the academy in recent weeks. Instructors across the country have been grappling with the implications of this technology for their teaching, especially their use of writing assignments. This session will begin with a brief overview of ChatGPT, its functionality and limitations, as well as ways to discourage its use for plagiarism and initial thoughts about how it might be used productively for writing assignments. Participants will then have the option of choosing one of three facilitated roundtable discussions: 1) hands-on exploration of ChatGPT functionality, 2) creating assignment prompts less susceptible to use of ChatGPT, 3) brainstorming ways to leverage ChatGPT in courses. To make the most of this session, participants are encouraged to bring a sample assignment prompt to focus their discussion and reflection.

Location: Palmer Commons
Organized By: Information and Technology Services (ITS)

Register to join the 2023 Privacy@Michigan keynote with Dr. Kirsten Martin on Friday, February 17 at 11 a.m.

Dr. Kirsten Martin for a Privacy@Michigan keynote presentation on privacy expectations on online platforms. Standard approaches to privacy assume individuals relinquish privacy expectations when online or have focused on individuals in relation to a single company. Platforms, such as social media, marketplaces, search engines, etc, are unique in having duties beyond a standard company while also having access to the data of millions of individuals. Dr. Martin will discuss how we need to think about platforms, particularly powerful platforms, as having an obligation to respect the privacy of their users and what that obligation actually entails. Dr. Martin is a University of Michigan College of Engineering alumna.

Dr. Florian Schaub, Assistant Professor of Information, School of Information and Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, College of Engineering, will facilitate Q&A time after the keynote presentation.

This hybrid event will be hosted in person in Forum Hall, on the fourth floor of Palmer Commons, and livestreamed on the Privacy@Michigan events page [https://safecomputing.umich.edu/events/privacy-at-michigan/privacy-day-2023/Keynote-Dr-Martin]

Refreshments will be available just prior to the event.

Change It Up! © Bystander Intervention (February 20, 2023 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/102582 102582-21804272@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, February 20, 2023 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Rackham Graduate School

Change It Up!© brings bystander intervention skills to students for the purpose of building supportive and respectful communities. Change It Up! is based on a nationally recognized five-step bystander intervention model that develops students’ skills and confidence when intervening in situations that negatively impact campus climate. This workshop explores how students’ identities and experiences impact their interactions inside and outside of the classroom. Through interactive theater, students apply the five steps to real-life scenarios and have an opportunity to practice and discuss how they can leverage these skills within their campus communities.
Learning Objectives:

Gain an understanding of what it means to be a bystander and factors that influence intervention
Gain multiple strategies to intervene and disrupt harm, such as microaggressions, bias incidents, stereotyping, sexual harassment, etc.
Act as an ally and educator, especially when you hold privilege and power and witness harm to those who do not hold privilege and power
Learn how to receive and respond to feedback about harm you caused, even if unintentional

This workshop is designed for University of Michigan master’s students, doctoral students, and postdoctoral fellows. For faculty and staff, please contact rackhampdeworkshops@umich.edu to see if we can accommodate your attendance.
Registration is required at https://myumi.ch/AwAeZ.

Student Combinatorics: Matroids, Grassmannians, and Dressians part II (February 20, 2023 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/104355 104355-21808858@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, February 20, 2023 4:00pm
Location: 1027 E. Huron Building
Organized By: Student Combinatorics Seminar - Department of Mathematics

Matroids are combinatorial objects, whose axioms attempt to capture possible independence relations among a finite set of vectors. It turns out that this is impossible to do. In fact, as the size of the base set grows larger, the probability that a matroid cannot be realized by a set of vectors approaches 1. We will review the definition of a matroid and talk about tropical Grassmannians and Dressians, and their positive parts. We will conclude with the result that all positively oriented matroids are realizable (Ardila-Rincon-Williams, 2017).

This workshop will share the outcomes of the 2018 U-M Native American Student Task Committee (NASTC) report as a point of departure to discuss evidence-based practices for supporting Native American students in higher education.
Because the first recommendation is to institutionalize the decolonizing practice of territorial acknowledgment, the workshop will examine the practice as well as consider the critiques and discourse around it, especially by Native American and indigenous scholars.
The workshop will then conclude with an exploration of other indigenizing and decolonizing practices that can support the academic success and educational attainment of Native American students, including campus smudging policies, supporting sense of place and belonging, and the #landback movement.
Learning Objectives:

Overview of the recommendations from the NASTC report
Examination of the practice of territorial acknowledgment and the current critique and discourse
Exploration of authentic indigenizing and decolonizing practices to support Native American students in higher education

Publication is one of the essential methods a scholar uses to disseminate their work, but many graduate students and postdoctoral fellows have little or no prior experience with authorship. In this workshop, we will share best practices for scholarly authorship, provide an overview of the phases of authorship, and discuss the questions that often arise in the publication process. Given that graduate students and postdoctoral fellows often co-author with mentors and peers, we will also share resources for discussing co-authorship with others. The focus will be on scholarly publication rather than other forms of publication, such as fiction writing, creative writing, etc. You will hear from staff experts and faculty leaders, including associate deans and graduate chairs:

Jacqueline Jeruss, professor of surgery and the director of the University of Michigan Breast Care Center
David Sept, Rackham associate dean of physical sciences and engineering and professor of biomedical engineering
Mark Dincecco, associate professor and graduate chair of political science
Arthur Verhoogt, Rackham associate dean of humanities and arts and professor of classics

This workshop is designed for University of Michigan master’s students, doctoral students, and postdoctoral fellows. For faculty and staff, please contact rackhampdeworkshops@umich.edu to see if we can accommodate your attendance.

Chris Rutledge is the 2023 Willie Hobbs Moore Distinguished Alumni Lectureship award winner.

Engineers today require a more comprehensive skill set and a broader personal network than ever before. The world’s problems are complex, and engineers must understand how these issues intersect to develop effective solutions. Creating a foundational toolset is paramount to addressing these problems. Additionally, the ability to communicate to both a technical audience and to non-technical decision makers are the keys to successful achievement of objectives. This talk will also trace a journey from rural East Texas to Distinguished Engineer at one of the biggest telecommunications companies in the world.

Bio
Christopher Rutledge is a Distinguished Engineer at Verizon and holds numerous patents in next generation communications technology. His philosophy is that all problems are eagerly waiting to be solved. With a BS in Electrical Engineering from Prairie View, an MS in Electrical Engineering from Michigan, and rich experiences across both public and private sectors, he has honed his ability to provide solutions in the midst of concurrent crises while embracing the accompanying chaos. He is currently responsible for the development of a Device Management platform that has, in 5 years, grown from 6 Verizon Business customers to well over 260,000, including over a half-million students learning remotely during the pandemic.

Christopher comes from a family of teachers dating back to reconstruction in the Great State of Texas and is the proud father of two Wolverines. Being a Track Parent, he still employs Statics & Dynamics while strength training young athletes at his home in New Jersey.

Zoom information will be shared via email. Contact Ann Stals for more information.

Topic: *Simulation for the Design of Sodium Heat Pipes bundle Test Facility for the Application of Microreactors*

The 20 MW Special Purpose Reactor (SPR) is a heat pipe cooled microreactor that designed for electricity production in remote locations where reliable power grids are not always available. The key to SPR is the alkali metal heat pipes, which offer entirely passive operation capacity with high mobility. Prior to deployment, safety analysis with postulated accident scenarios is required for the licensing of SPR. To this regard, a sufficiently accurate model is crucial to predict the behavior of heat pipes, and high-resolution data is needed for the safety analysis of SPR. However, the current existing heat pipe models are either oversimplified or unpractical expensive in view of the difficulty of the simulation with the wick structure and two-phase flow in the heat pipe. Therefore, high fidelity experimental data is required for model verification in the high temperature heat pipe bundle system. The Michigan Sodium Heat Pipe bundle test facility which serves as a scale-down test facility using ten sodium heat pipes with a triangular array, was utilized to verify the model for the licensing of SPR. In the talk, the feasibility analysis using Computer Aided Engineering and Computational Fluid Dynamics for the design of the test facility was addressed.

Topic: *Modeling CTL-mediated Tumor Cell Death Mechanisms and the Activity of Immune Checkpoints in Immunotherapy*

Immunotherapy has dramatically transformed the cancer treatment landscape. Of the variety of types of immunotherapies available, immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), which block inhibitory signals from tumor cells and reinvigorate killing activities of immune cells, have gained the spotlight. Although ICIs have shown promising results for some patients, the low response rates in many cancers highlight the challenges of using immune checkpoint blockade as an effective treatment. Cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) execute their cell-killing function via two distinct mechanisms. The first process is fast-acting and perforin/granzyme-mediated, and the second is a slower, Fas ligand (FasL)-driven killing mechanism. There is also evidence suggesting that the preferred killing mechanism by CTLs depends on the antigenicity of tumor cells. To determine the key factors affecting responses to checkpoint blockade therapy, we constructed an ordinary differential equation model describing in vivo tumor-immune dynamics in the presence of active or blocked PD-1/PDL1 immune checkpoint. Specifically, we analyzed which aspects of the tumor-immune landscape affect the response to ICIs with endpoints of tumor size and composition in the short and long term. By generating a virtual cohort with heterogeneous tumor and immune attributes, we also simulated the therapeutic outcomes of immune checkpoint blockade in a largely diverse population. In this way, we identified key tumor and immune characteristics that are associated with tumor elimination, dormancy and escape. This talk will also shed light on which fraction of a population potentially responds well to ICIs and ways to enhance therapeutic outcomes with combination therapy.

ChE SEMINAR: “Development of electrocatalytic materials guided by computational chemistry: fuel cells and electrolysis” (March 2, 2023 11:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/104614 104614-21809729@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 2, 2023 11:30am

Abstract:
Electrocatalysts are an essential component of fuel cells, electrolyzers, and some battery technologies. The development of composition-structure-functional relationships guides rational design of electrocatalytic materials. Quantum mechanics based computational techniques, such as density functional theory methods, are a useful tool in guiding catalyst design. Density functional theory (DFT) methods are widely used to evaluate surface catalytic reaction mechanisms and to predict the relative performance of various catalyst formulations or structures. Translation of DFT approaches to the electrocatalytic environment requires additional methodological choices due to additional complexities offered by the electrified catalyst-electrolyte interface. This talk will provide an overview of the challenges to atomistic modeling of electrochemical interfaces and describe the various DFT approaches used to model electrocatalytic systems. The use of DFT to determine electrocatalytic reaction mechanisms and guide the design of catalytic materials will be discussed using examples from our group’s research; hydrogen fuel cells, carbon dioxide and nitrogen reduction, and biomass conversion to fuels and chemicals. The integration of DFT with classical force-field molecular dynamics approaches for modeling the electrochemical interface will also be discussed.

Organized By: Rackham Graduate School

Racial microaggressions can be uniquely harmful to their targets, and yet we often find ourselves skirting around this subset of microaggressions due to discomfort in openly discussing race, racism, and white supremacy. In this workshop we hope to foster an intellectually humble environment within which we can unpack racial microaggressions, address common barriers to intervening when a racial microaggression is inflicted, and provide tools for successfully intervening in the future.
Learning objectives:

Identify elements of systemic racism and understand its compounding nature, and connect how systemic racism creates a breeding ground for racial microaggressions
Identify racial microaggressions and intervene to disrupt their impact
Practice emotional self-awareness by identifying emotional barriers to intervening to disrupt a racial microaggression

This workshop is designed for University of Michigan master’s students, doctoral students, and postdoctoral fellows. For faculty and staff, please contact  rackhampdeworkshops@umich.edu to see if we can accommodate your attendance.
Registration is required at https://myumi.ch/Prmyk.

Change It Up! © Anti-Black Racism is an interactive session where participants will learn about ways their identities can influence how they interact with others, as well as strategies they can start using immediately to navigate some of these interactions when harm is involved. This 90 minute workshop is focused on bystander intervention in response to anti-Black racism, however it does not negate or minimize other types of racism, and it also covers unconscious bias, social identities, and social justice.
Learning Objectives:

Develop a common language and historical perspective of anti-Black racism and unearned racial advantage/privilege
Identify common situations of anti-Black racism based on definitions and historical perspectives taught in the session, including what it looks like in the engineering community, profession, student organizations, research, etc.
Interrupt anti-Black racist harmful behavior as you see or experience it

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: LSA Technology Services

Please join us for the final workshop in the DS 101 series, which brings it all together. You’ve got a great plan for your research project. It’s conceptualized, and you know how you’ll manage the labor, materials, and information. How do you describe the value of your project in your CV or when you are up for review? And how will people know about it and find it once it exists? Building upon the themes in the DS 101 workshop series, this workshop will discuss how to communicate the successes and impact of your digital project to make it legible to fellow researchers and university administration. This session will provide guidance on how to best communicate and highlight to external and internal stakeholders the deliverables and anticipated outcomes of your project.

Note: This workshop will be held on Zoom. You will receive a reminder and a Zoom link one hour before the workshop.

About the Digital Scholarship 101 workshop series:

This series of workshops helps scholars avoid outdated projects, unpreserved knowledge, uncredited labor, and privacy or consent issues by emphasizing process in the project life cycle. Workshop participants learn how to conceptualize the life cycle of a project using human-centered design and backwards modelling when planning their projects to better understand how to version, archive, and preserve their research projects. Throughout the series, thematic questions around sustainability, preservation, accessibility, privacy, consent, grant requirements, and teaching with research will be examined. We encourage you to come with a project in mind and bring materials if available, but is not required to attend.

MIPSE Seminar | How Ignition and Target Gain > 1 Was Achieved in Inertial Fusion (March 8, 2023 3:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/103472 103472-21807308@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, March 8, 2023 3:30pm
Location: Lurie Robert H. Engin. Ctr
Organized By: Michigan Institute for Plasma Science and Engineering (MIPSE)

Abstract:
For many decades the running joke in fusion research has been that `fusion’ is twenty years away and always will be. Yet, this year we find ourselves in a position where we can talk about the milestones of burning plasmas, fusion ignition, and target energy gain greater than unity in the past tense – a situation that is remarkable! In this talk, I tell the story of the applied physics challenges that needed to be overcome to achieve these milestones and the strategy our team followed. To help understand the story, several key physics principles of inertial fusion will be presented, and I will try and dispel any confusion about what the terms burning, ignition, and gain mean in the context of inertial fusion research.

About the Speaker:
Omar Hurricane is Chief Scientist for the inertial confinement fusion program at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, a position he’s held since 2014. Omar completed his PhD in Physics at UCLA in 1994 where he remained as a postdoc doing plasma theory until 1998. In 2009, Omar was awarded the Department of Energy E.O. Lawrence Award for National Security and Nonproliferation for solving a long-standing nuclear weapons anomaly. More recently, Omar has been recognized for his contributions to inertial confinement fusion with Fellowship in the American Physical Society (APS), the 2021 Edward Teller Award of the American Nuclear Society, and the 2022 John Dawson Award from Excellence in Plasma Physics of the APS for achieving the first laboratory burning plasma.

Topic: *Deterministic and Stochastic Modeling of Dynamical Systems in Chemical Kinetics*

Chemical reactions are ubiquitous in nature in the form of biological and physical processes. We use nonlinear ordinary differential equations to mathematically model these processes in the deterministic regime. If a given process occurs at disparate time-scales, we can further reduce the number of equations to obtain a quasi-steady-state approximation of the system. In this talk, we consider a significant mechanism in chemical kinetics called the Michaelis–Menten reaction and its different quasi-steady-state reductions. We focus on the challenges faced in applying classical reduction theory on the system and the conditions under which its reductions are valid in the stochastic regime. We make use of a stochastic simulation algorithm called the Gillespie algorithm to demonstrate the accuracy of the reduced systems and to disprove a commonly-accepted qualifier for the validity of the stochastic approximation.

Engendering Respectful Communities (ERC) is a one-session workshop combining multiple instructional tools to engage graduate students in meaningful dialogue about the various forms of sexual misconduct, including sexual harassment, assault, and discrimination, that they may encounter. Participants are then able to build skills to intervene safely in potentially harmful situations. ERC workshops make use of the circle process, which focuses on building meaningful connections between participants and ensuring all participants can engage in respectful dialogue. ERC sessions are facilitated by the Sexual Assault and Prevention Center’s Graduate Research, Outreach, Workshops, and Evaluation volunteers, who are all current graduate students.
By the conclusion of the workshop participants will have:

an understanding of the various forms of sexual misconduct and discrimination that graduate students may encounter.
been introduced to foundational tools for intervening safely in potentially harmful situations.
knowledge of the resources available to them on campus for preventing and responding to sexual misconduct and discrimination.

Democratically Engaged Assessment, Part One: Reimagining Assessment for Public Scholarship (March 13, 2023 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/104686 104686-21809860@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, March 13, 2023 10:00am
Location: Michigan Union
Organized By: Rackham Graduate School

Assessment. The word sends shivers up the spine of even the most experienced scholars. Assessment is one of the most challenging, fraught, and effective endeavors that we deal with as public scholars, community engagement professionals, and change agents. But does assessment have to be so stressful? So inauthentic? Devoid of values? The quick answer: no!
Assessment can be so much more than ticking boxes, taking surveys, and statistics. It can be dynamic, engaging, authentic, and reaffirming. In this workshop, we will help participants reimagine their relationship with assessment and develop ways of centering an equity-based, inclusive, democratic assessment process in their work. These workshops will guide participants through a series of activities to reimagine their assessment work using the framework of democratically-engaged assessment (DEA) as a lens. Following a conceptual introduction and initial engagement with the framework, participants will examine their assessment practices and develop an action plan for their own work in a specific arena. Reflective exercises and collaborative activities will help participants surface their assumptions about the role of values in assessment, the values they enact through their assessment, tension points that arise across phases of assessment, and opportunities to negotiate tensions through the lens of DEA. In keeping with the tenets of the framework, participants will not only enhance their own work, but also will contribute to the ongoing and co-creative development of the DEA framework itself.

Part 1: Reimagining Assessment for Public Scholarship
Intention: This workshop will cover the basics of assessment, bust some myths, introduce some framings and tools, and explore examples of the spectrum of assessment.

Julia Metzker serves as director of the Washington Center for Improving Undergraduate Education at the Evergreen State College. Julia received her first degree from the Evergreen State College, where she learned first-hand the value of a transformative liberal arts education. She obtained a doctoral degree in inorganic chemistry from the University of Arizona and completed a postdoctoral appointment at the University of York in the United Kingdom. In her 10 years as a chemistry professor at Georgia College, she discovered the power of community-based learning to engage students in learning that matters. After serving as the inaugural director of community-based engaged learning at Georgia College she moved to Stetson University as the founding executive director for the Brown Center for Faculty Innovation and Excellence. During her journey of discovering herself as an educator, she was fortunate to find a cohort of like-minded university educators who co-founded the Innovative Course-building Group—a grass-roots social network for learning that supports teaching faculty and staff across disciplines. She believes in reimagining and reclaiming the democratic potential of assessment, work she champions as a member of Imagining America’s Assessing the Practices of Public Scholarship (APPS) research group. She and her partner, Joe, raise chickens and bees in the Pacific Northwest.
Sarah Stanlick is an assistant professor in the Department of Integrative and Global Studies and the director of the Great Problems Seminar at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). She is also responsible for the delivery and support of global project-based learning through the Global Projects Program, and teaches social science research methods for students of all backgrounds and majors in preparation for the interactive qualifying project, a seven-week project with external sponsors. Her commitment to transformative and inclusive learning that engages students as active agents includes her regular participation in faculty learning communities at WPI and collaborative work to advance the integration of open educational resources and open pedagogical practices across the WPI curriculum. In addition to co-chairing the APPS collective with Julia, she serves as one of the co-directors of the Community-Based Global Learning Collaborative. Her priority for teaching, research, and service is to encourage and model engaged, active citizenship and help create conditions for all community members to be able to similarly engage. She splits time between Worcester and Hellertown, Pennsylvania (where her partner Michael works and lives with their spicy cat Miikka) and is an avid gardener, yoga practitioner, cook, and ice hockey fan.

This session is sponsored by Rackham’s Mellon Public Engagement and the Humanities program, and is open to all students on campus interested in the topic.

Location: Off Campus Location

For more info and to apply: https://www.cew.umich.edu/advocacy-initiatives/twink-frey-visiting-social-activist-program

Each year the Twink Frey Visiting Social Activist (TFVSA) Program brings to CEW+ a social justice activist whose work affects women and recognizes gender equity issues. One goal of the program is to build the capacity and effectiveness of social activists by giving the TFVSA time, space, and support to work on a project that would not be possible under the activist’s usual working circumstances.

The TFVSA program gives the selected TFVSA time for reflection, research, planning, and writing related to their area of activism. Each TFVSA is required to work on a project that will advance their future work and potentially benefit other activists.

If selected, the applicant is invited to reside near campus for up to one month or make intermittent visits to Ann Arbor and work remotely. The 2024 residency will take place during the winter semester with a presentation of their project the following fall semester at the CEW+ Annual Advocacy Symposium. The activist receives a $10,000 stipend to cover their expenses while in Ann Arbor. Travel expenses to and from Ann Arbor are separately reimbursed by the endowment fund.

ELIGIBILITY

The TFVSA program supports activists whose work addresses gender equity issues that affect the lives of women and/or girls. The program defines social justice and equity programs broadly to include activism in such areas as housing, employment, income support, food security, education, violence, child care, health care, and employer benefits like paid sick leave and retirement income.

Extraordinary leaders commit to creating contexts that engage all of their stakeholders maximally, from positions of strength. This means enabling people with diverse perspectives and backgrounds to bring their best selves to work—leveraging their unique strengths and experiences to make valuable, authentic contributions to their organizations. Laura Morgan Roberts presents evidence-based insight that will help you activate the unrealized potential that diverse perspectives and experiences can bring to your career and to your organization. This session builds upon an appreciative perspective for learning about, learning across, and learning from differences, while fully acknowledging the “best-self blockers” that biases and inequity present for our workplaces and communities. The Alignment Quest™ framework lays out a pathway toward self-actualization, meaningful engagement, impact, and fulfillment.

Topic: *Traffic signal optimization with connected vehicle trajectories*

Traffic signal retiming is one of the most cost-effective methods for reducing congestion and energy consumption in urban areas based on the existing road infrastructure. However, high installation and maintenance costs of vehicle detectors have prevented the widespread implementation of adaptive traffic control systems (ATSC). Therefore, most intersections are still controlled by fixed-time traffic signals which are not updated regularly due to the lack of traffic monitoring capabilities. In the past few years, vehicle trajectory data has become increasingly available and offers many advantages over detectors and other infrastructure-based sensors for traffic monitoring; but using such data for automatic traffic signal diagnosis and optimization at scalable implementable levels is relatively unexplored. To fill this gap, this work proposes Optimizing Traffic Signals as a Service (OSaaS), an integrated traffic signal re-timing system that uses vehicle trajectories as the main input. OSaaS addresses many of the current challenges relating to signal retiming with trajectory data such as incomplete observation due to limited penetration rates. The system builds a queueing model that reconstructs the overall average traffic state, calibrated from performance measurements directly obtained from vehicle trajectories. The calibrated queueing model then predicts and evaluates network performance under different traffic signal parameters to provide diagnostics and direct traffic signal retiming guidance. In April 2022, a citywide field test of OSaaS was conducted in Birmingham, Michigan, with 34 signalized intersections. This resulted in decreases in both the delay and number of stops by up to 20% and 30%, respectively. OSaaS provides a more scalable, sustainable, resilient, and efficient solution to traffic signal retiming without requiring any additional infrastructure through the exclusive utilization of currently available trajectory data. As a result, it presents the possibility of upgrading all existing fixed-time traffic signals to dynamic systems with periodical parameter updates, something that is not currently possible without significant investments in infrastructure-based traffic flow sensors.

Topic: *Simulating Naturalistic Driving Environment for Autonomous Vehicles*

Simulation provides a controllable, efficient, and low-cost venue for both developing and testing autonomous vehicles (AV). But for simulation to be an effective tool, statistical realism of the simulated driving environment is a must. In this talk, we will introduce methods to simulate naturalistic driving environment for AV testing purposes.

On Thursday, 3/16, we will be hosting the McDonald's VP of US Marketing, Branded Content, and Engagement, JJ Healan. JJ is one of my (Professor Marcus Collins) closest clients at McDonald’s, responsible for leading the Famous Orders campaigns that we created within the walls of McDs along with the Adult Happy Meal activation, and a host of other game-changing initiatives that have helped earn the brand its top spot on Fast Company's 2023 Most Innovative Brands list. Furthermore, JJ has been recognized as Ad Age 2021 Brand Leader of the Year, Business Insider 2021 Rising Star, and more recently one of the 2022 Adweek 50 Luminaries. Needless to say, JJ is amazing, and, fortunately for us, she will be joining us THIS THURSDAY to discuss her career, her successes (at Coke and McDs), her life lessons, and what will be required for tomorrow's marketing leaders.

The event will start at 7pm in the Corner Commons of Blau--Room B1590.
I hope you can join us.

Structural racism in the United States is the normalization and legitimization of an array of dynamics—historical, cultural, institutional, and interpersonal—that routinely advantage whites while producing cumulative and chronic adverse outcomes for people of color. It is a system of hierarchy and inequity, primarily characterized by white supremacy—the preferential treatment, privilege, and power for white people at the expense of other racially oppressed people. It is also important to recognize that racism is a global issue and continues to be perpetuated in societies across the globe and it manifests in many different ways at various levels. This anti-racism workshop in an abroad context aims to offer an entryway for students to engage in observing how racism plays out in different societies outside the United States, utilizing examples, particularly media representation, that may reflect deeper messages, and what it means to be anti-racist in the abroad context for American students who have been abroad, or may be visiting, studying, or traveling abroad.
This workshop will engage participants in the following activities:

Better understanding of the term “anti-racism”
Learning about race and its nuances
Recognizing how culture can shape how racism and power structures develop
Seeing how media around the world uphold oppression in different ways
Creating action steps toward actively recognizing oppression abroad

This workshop is designed for University of Michigan master’s students, doctoral students, and postdoctoral fellows. For faculty and staff, please contact  rackhampdeworkshops@umich.edu to see if we can accommodate your attendance.

Students will be invited to post pre-writing goals and post-writing reflections in the document. Writers can also schedule a 10-minute Zoom meeting with Sweetland faculty during each session to discuss writing questions. We will also provide weekly writing strategies to habituate students to best writing practices.

Supported by the Rackham Graduate School and the Sweetland Center for Writing.

Increasingly, hiring committees are interested in how prospective faculty job candidates will contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion. As a result, many academic employers have begun to request a diversity statement as part of the faculty job application process. In this interactive session, we will discuss best practices for writing diversity statements, examine sample statements, and work through activities designed to help participants start writing their own statement.
Learning objectives:

Reflect on ways you are committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in your research, teaching, engagement, leadership, or other areas
Identify resources that allow you to participate and contribute to DEI initiatives, opportunities, projects, and research
Review best practices to write a diversity statement and learn how to critically evaluate diversity statements

Trapped ions are a leading quantum technology for quantum computation and simulation, with the capability to solve computationally hard problems and deepen our understanding of complex quantum systems. The quantum circuit model is the central paradigm for quantum computation, enabling the realization of various quantum algorithms by application of multiple one- and two-qubit entangling operations. However, the typical number of entangling operations required by this model increases exponentially with the number of qubits, making it difficult to apply to many problems.

In my presentation, I will discuss new methods for realizing quantum gates and simulations that go beyond the quantum circuit model. I will first describe a single-step protocol for generating native, -body interactions between trapped-ion spins, using spin-dependent squeezing. Next, I will present a preparation of novel phases of matter using simultaneous and reconfigurable spin-spin interactions. Lastly, I will explore new avenues to harness the long-lived phonon modes in trapped-ion crystals for simulating complex bosonic and spin-boson models that are difficult to solve using classical methods. The presented techniques could push the performance of trapped-ion systems to solve problems that are currently beyond their reach.

MIPSE Seminar | Moving to Address the Curse of Dimensionality to Enable ‘First Principle’ Optimal Design in Fusion System (March 22, 2023 3:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/104217 104217-21808661@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, March 22, 2023 3:30pm
Location: Chrysler Center
Organized By: Michigan Institute for Plasma Science and Engineering (MIPSE)

Abstract:
Recent advances at the National Ignition Facility and their achievement of thermal nuclear burn represents an exciting advancement in fusion energy systems. A close synergy between simulation, theory, and experiment, (including data assimilation) led to this advance. However, if we were to design a new device at a new operating point outside parameters covered by the experiments, we lack the ‘first principle’ predictive capabilities that enable such a design. This is because inertial and magnetically confined fusion systems are far from an equilibrium state and can span many plasma regimes Behind all of these challenges in building ‘first principle’ models is dimensionality. To address this challenge, the Center for Hierarchical and Robust Modeling of Non-Equilibrium Transport (CHaRMNET) was created. CHaRMNET, a DoE Mathematical Multifaceted Integrated Capability Center, will develop mathematical tools that enable ‘first principle’ effects within the design loop of fusion energy systems. CHaRMNET will exploit structure within models to mitigate the challenges of dimensionality and to bridge wide ranges of length and time scales in plasma science. The challenge of dimensionality is pervasive throughout computational science and refers to the observation that the resources to solve a problem on a computer scale exponentially with the dimensions. Fundamental plasma models are seven-dimensional and are presently computationally intractable for the engineering scale of plasma systems. In this talk, I will give an overview of the various thrusts in CHaRMNET to address this challenge, with a focus on Multi-Scale Modeling.

About the Speaker:
Andrew Christlieb is a University Foundation Professor of Mathematics at Michigan State University.
