Studies in my lab focus on mechanisms regulating limb synovial joint formation, skeletal development and growth plate function and involving signaling proteins, cell surface receptors and co-receptors and transcription factors. Data and insights from these basic research projects are used to decipher the pathogenesis of congenital pediatric musculoskeletal disorders and identify possible therapeutic remedies.
Disorders under active study at present are Hereditary Multiple Exostoses (HME), Achondroplasia and Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP). This basic-translational-clinical strategy is proving fruitful as one drug identified in my lab for the treatment of FOP was recently approved in Canada, with approval in the US expected soon. I am the Director of Pediatric Orthopaedic Research here at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and have served in this position since 2011. I am also the Associate Director of the Penn Center for Musculoskeletal Diseases (PCMD) at U Penn that has over 15 faculty members and maintains 3 Research Cores, serving a large biomedical research community at our two adjacent Institutions and surrounding Universities and Research Institutes.

Topic: *Influence of shear wave velocity heterogeneity on SH-wave reverberation imaging of the mantle transition zone*

We use the top-side shear wave reflection Ssds as a probe for mapping the depths of the mantle transition zone (MTZ) beneath the contiguous US. Using a common-reflection point (CRP) mapping approach, we observe that the MTZ are about 40–50 km deeper beneath the western United States than the central-eastern United States if based on the 1-D Earth wave velocity model (Preliminary Reference Earth Model). However, the east-to-west deepening of the MTZ disappears in the CRP image if we account for 3-D shear wave velocity variations in the mantle according to global tomography. In addition, from spectral-element method synthetics, we find that ray theory overpredicts the traveltime delays of the reverberations. Undulations of the MTZ are underestimated when their wavelengths are smaller than the Fresnel zones of the wave reverberations in the MTZ. Therefore, modelling of layering in the upper mantle must be based on 3-D reference structures and accurate calculations of reverberation traveltimes.

Revolutionary advances in Internet of Things (IoT) technologies have realized the emergence of smart & connected systems, where physical units (or devices) that acquire data are connected through a central cloud with intelligence. Increased connectivity across units provides significant opportunities for improving smart analytics through sharing knowledge across units, but, at the same time, reveals critical challenges. First, skyrocketing data scale is beginning to overwhelm computing, storage, and bandwidth resources in the central cloud. Second, personalized analytics is indispensable as units often operate in different environments or have unique features. Third, real-time data collection in smart & connected systems necessitates adapting a smart analytics model to the new data collected.

In this talk, I will present two approaches that address the challenges above, based on a collaborative strategy that distributes learning efforts to the units at the edge while keeping their data stored locally. First, I will discuss a method where physical units collaboratively estimate a multi-output Gaussian process model by exploiting the natural hierarchy of smart & connected systems. Next, I will discuss a two-step approach that (i) finds a well-generalized solution lying in flat minima on the loss surface through distributed computation across units and then (ii) personalizes the learned model to new units without losing old knowledge. Real-world applications for the prediction of lithium-ion battery degradation, condition monitoring signals of turbofan engines, and missing climate data highlight the advantageous features of the proposed models. The talk concludes with some interesting future directions.

Presenter Bio:
Seokhyun Chung is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Industrial & Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan, where he is advised by Dr. Raed Al Kontar. His research interests broadly lie in data-driven predictive analytics and decision-making for smart & connected systems. His current research explores collaborative and distributed analytics where Internet of Things-enabled entities (e.g., smartphones, electric vehicles, and wearable devices) exploit their edge computing power to build smart analytics collaboratively. He has been nominated as a finalist in the Quality, Statistics, & Reliability (QSR) Best refereed paper competition at INFORMS 2022 and the Quality Control & Reliability Engineering (QCRE) Best student paper competition at IISE 2021.

Human-Centered Design to Improve Inclusiveness of CAVs for Older Adults (December 9, 2022 10:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/101398 101398-21801301@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, December 9, 2022 10:30am
Location: Transportation Research Institute
Organized By: Center for Connected and Automated Transportation

The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI), in a project sponsored by the Center for Connected and Automated Transportation (CCAT), is helping engineering students explore issues of older adult accessibility, acceptability, and other aspects of inclusion related to CAVs through classroom discussions and implementation of a class project.

In this poster session, project researchers and Michigan Engineering students will present findings from the project on how human-centered design principles can be used to address the needs and preferences of older adults in the design of CAVs. Hors d'oeuvres from The Produce Station will be served. Space is limited so secure your spot today.

CAVs hold promise for reducing traffic crashes and maintaining mobility among older adults. However, challenges remain in ensuring that CAVs are accessible, acceptable, and otherwise inclusive for older adults. Using a framework of experiential learning (exploring, engaging, reflecting, and communicating), students in a human-centered design course taught by Dr. Feng Zhou engaged in a classroom project to identify potential solutions for making CAVs more responsive to older adult needs and preferences. Students and researchers from the larger project will share their findings with CCAT members, UMTRI and other University faculty, staff, students, and industry representatives.

Nowadays, the sheer amount of data collected from edge devices such as mobile phones and self-driving vehicles is beginning to overwhelm traditional centralized data analytics regimes where data from the edge is continuously uploaded to a central server to be processed. Excessive communication traffic from data upload, significant central server storage needs, energy expenditures from centralized learning of big data models, and privacy concerns from sharing raw data are becoming critical challenges in centralized systems. Fortunately, a critical change is happening in today’s Internet of Things (IoT). The processing and computational power of edge devices is becoming increasingly powerful. AI chips are rapidly infiltrating the global market. As such, we now have the opportunity to process more of our data where it is created - i.e., at the edge. This decentralized data analytics paradigm is often coined as federated data analytics (FDA). FDA resolves many of the aforementioned drawbacks. By exploiting edge computations, one can parallelize inference, reduce storage and communication costs, achieve faster alerts and decisions, and protect privacy, amongst many others. Meanwhile, FDA, as an emerging technology, poses significant intellectual challenges. To name a few: (1) most FDA work focuses on deep neural networks and empirical risk minimization (ERM). However, statistical questions such as variable selection, uncertainty quantification, hypothesis testing, and incorporating domain expert knowledge remain unanswered in FDA; (2) edge devices often have local datasets that differ in both size and distribution. Most FDA papers learn a single global model and fail to provide reasonable predictions when heterogeneity exists; (3) IoT systems can raise bias and fairness concerns. Devices with insufficient amounts of data, limited bandwidth, or unreliable internet connection are not favored by conventional training algorithms.
In this talk, I will present my two research papers that address the aforementioned challenges in FDA. First, I will present the federated Gaussian process that provides solutions that go beyond ERM and to correlated settings, which is very common in engineering situations. Interestingly, this model can naturally handle statistical heterogeneity and provide a personalized solution to each edge device. Second, I will present a framework – GIFAIR-FL that imposes group and individual fairness to the FDA setting. The talk concludes with some interesting future directions and my recent work on the collaborative process parameter design and its application in 3D printing

The Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship provides tuition and stipend to students studying designated foreign languages in combination with area studies or international aspects of professional studies. The priority is to encourage the study of less commonly taught modern languages. The U.S. Department of Education (US/ED) funds these awards under the provisions of Title VI of the Higher Education Act. The amount of funding and number of awards are contingent upon annual US/ED program approval, federal regulations, as well as continued congressional funding, all of which may change from year to year. As a federal grant, this fellowship is only available to US citizens and permanent residents.

We offer a goal-oriented workshop to help you plan and (re)align your focus for weekly success. In these workshops, we will guide you through a goal-creation process, use crowdsourcing to find resources and potential pitfalls, and provide you with a goal coach for the week. After completing the workshop, you will have the opportunity to receive 3 additional weeks of personalized support on a specific 30-day goal.

Weekly Communication and Support: You will be assigned a goals coach, who will support and guide you through your 30-day goal.

Our coaches will:

-Work with you to define or redefine your goal
-Provide strategies to help you achieve it!
-Connect with you once a week via Zoom, telephone, or email to answer your questions, provide support, and highlight wins.
-Facilitate a safe space to develop a network of peers for shared support

At WISE we know that the different dimensions of wellness are something that we should focus on every day not only in times of stress. We have created the Wellness Everyday Series to aid the WISE community’s exposure to different aspects of their wellness and develop a practice of wellness every day. When you are well it helps the community to become well.

Register in sessions for information on how to join in-person or virtually.

The Role of Data Collection in Population Science: Contemporary Studies from ABCD to HBCD

Abstract

Recently nationwide consortiums of multiple research sites have conducted multi-modal, longitudinal cohort studies and provided unprecedented data sources for population science research. For example, the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study has collected data from 11,880 children ages 9-10 across 21 U.S. research sites, as the largest long-term study of brain development and child health; and the Healthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD) Study will enroll 7,500 pregnant women across 25 research sites and follow them from pregnancy through early childhood, as the largest long-term study of early brain and child development in the U.S. Both studies aim to reflect the sociodemographic diversity of the target population to enable characterization of natural variability and trajectories. Without probability sampling as the touchstone for randomization-based inferences, the data quality and analysis validity require rigorous evaluations and potentially rely on untestable assumptions. The data collection process also presents various challenges during practical operation.

In this talk, I look into both inference and design schemes to study the impact of data collection on population science. First, using the ABCD study as an example of secondary data analysis, I discuss inference approaches focusing on multilevel regression and poststratification for population generalizability and latent subgroup detection for population heterogeneity in brain activity and association studies. Second, I introduce the HBCD study design. HBCD also aims to include individuals demographically and behaviorally similar to those in the substance exposure group, but without exposure, to enable valid causal inference in a non-experimental study design. I discuss our proposed weighting, matching, and modeling strategies to leverage analysis goals to inform the design and dashboard monitoring for adaptive sample enrollment.

Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science (MPSDS)
The University of Michigan Program in Survey Methodology was established in 2001 seeking to train future generations of survey and data scientists. In 2021, we changed our name to the Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science. Our curriculum is concerned with a broad set of data sources including survey data, but also including social media posts, sensor data, and administrative records, as well as analytic methods for working with these new data sources. And we bring to data science a focus on data quality — which is not at the center of traditional data science. The new name speaks to what we teach and work on at the intersection of social research and data. The program offers doctorate and master of science degrees and a certificate through the University of Michigan. The program's home is the Institute for Social Research, the world's largest academically-based social science research institute.

Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques (SISRT)
The mission of the Summer Institute is to provide rigorous and high quality graduate training in all phases of survey research. The program teaches state-of-the-art practice and theory in the design, implementation, and analysis of surveys. The Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques has presented courses on the sample survey since the summer of 1948, and has offered such courses every summer since. Graduate-level courses through the Program in Survey and Data Science are offered from June 5 through July 28 and available to enroll in as a Summer Scholar.

The Summer Institute uses the sample survey as the basic instrument for the scientific measurement of human activity. It presents sample survey methods in courses designed to meet the educational needs of those specializing in social and behavioral research such as professionals in business, public health, natural resources, law, medicine, nursing, social work, and many other domains of study.

Albert S. Berahas is an Assistant Professor in the Industrial and Operations Engineering department at the University of Michigan. Before joining the University of Michigan, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Industrial and Systems Engineering department at Lehigh University working with Professors Katya Scheinberg, Frank Curtis and Martin Takáč. Prior to that appointment, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences department at Northwestern University working with ProfessorJorge Nocedal. Berahas completed his PhD studies in the Engineering Sciences and Applied Mathematics (ESAM) department at Northwestern University in 2018, advised by Professor Jorge Nocedal. He received his undergraduate degree in Operations Research and Industrial Engineering (ORIE) from Cornell University in 2009, and in 2012 obtained an MS degree in Applied Mathematics from Northwestern University. Berahas’ research broadly focuses on designing, developing and analyzing algorithms for solving large scale nonlinear optimization problems. Specifically, he is interested in and has explored several sub-fields of nonlinear optimization such as: (i) general nonlinear optimization algorithms, (ii) optimization algorithms for machine learning, (iii) constrained optimization, (iv) stochastic optimization, (v) derivative-free optimization, and (vi) distributed optimization.

ALGORITHMS FOR DETERMINISTICALLY CONSTRAINED STOCHASTIC OPTIMIZATION

Stochastic gradient and related methods for solving stochastic optimization problems have been studied extensively in recent years. It has been shown that such algorithms and much of their convergence and complexity guarantees extend in straightforward ways when one considers problems involving simple constraints, such as when one can perform projections onto the feasible region of the problem. However, settings with general nonlinear constraints have received less attention, and many of the approaches that have been proposed for solving such problems resort to using penalty or (augmented) Lagrangian methods, which are often not the most effective strategies. In this work, we propose and analyze stochastic optimization algorithms for deterministically constrained problems based on the sequential quadratic optimization (commonly known as SQP) methodology. We discuss the rationale behind our proposed techniques, convergence in expectation and complexity guarantees for our algorithms, and the results of preliminary numerical experiments that we have performed. This is joint work with Raghu Bollapragada, Frank E. Curtis, Michael O’Neill, Daniel P. Robinson, Jiahao Shi and Baoyu Zhou.

The MICDE Winter 2023 Seminar Series is open to all.

This seminar is hosted by the Michigan Institute for Computational Discovery & Engineering (MICDE). Prof. Berahas will be hosted by Prof. Siqian Shen, Associate Professor of Industrial and Operations Engineering and Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

Educating Ethical Engineers (January 24, 2023 10:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/103233 103233-21806517@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, January 24, 2023 10:30am
Location: Lurie Robert H. Engin. Ctr
Organized By: Engineering Education Research

In today’s society, the need to graduate engineers who are conscious of their ethical and professional responsibilities is more important than ever. This is especially difficult given the current media environment that publicizes reports of algorithmic bias, drone-based surveillance, and emissions falsification (among other issues) but provides few positive role models for students. While engineering programs have made significant strides to incorporate ethics instruction into the engineering curriculum, there is little evidence about which approaches best prepare students to address the ethical challenges they will face in the workforce. In this session, Dr. Finelli will present research about the state of undergraduate ethics instruction and it’s long term impact, propose a new approach to ethics instruction, and offer two course-based approaches to better educate ethical engineers.

Relationships is the most important word in the English lexicon. In the midst of code switching, imposter syndrome, and rampant sexism in colleges of engineering how can authentic relationships between historically excluded students, faculty, and staff be built? During this discussion we will consider best practices that we all must engage in since we are all responsible for building community.

The IOE Community Dialog Series is a series of facilitated discussions between members of the IOE community that surround a speaker and topic. The intent is to hear and engage with diverse viewpoints, ideas, and experiences to understand differing perspectives or challenges some of our colleagues or students face while acknowledging the explicit and hidden structures that influence our community; especially as it pertains to the work we do.

Topic: *Understanding thermomechanical behavior of vitrimers using molecular dynamics simulations*

Vitrimers are a special class of polymers that undergo dynamic cross-linking under thermal stimuli. Their ability to exchange covalent bonds can be harnessed to mitigate damage in a composite or to achieve recyclable composites. This work addresses the primary challenge of modeling dynamic cross-linking reactions in vitrimers during thermomechanical loading. Dynamic bond exchange reaction probability change during heating and its effect on dilatometric and mechanical response are simulated in large scale molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Healing of damage under thermal cycling is computed with mechanical properties predicted before and after self–healing.

Subsequently, the model is used to simulate the creep response of the vitrimer. The results show that the vitrimers demonstrate a secondary creep response on contrary to pure epoxy. The MD simulations are able to probe the interplay between chemical reactions and the loading that results in the healing of the vitrimer under creep. The important feature that explains the difference between epoxies and vitrimers is the orientation of the crosslink bonds with respect to the loading direction. Furthermore, it is found that the free volume that arises from tensile loads is reduced in vitrimers through dynamic bond rearrangement. The bond orientation, however, is preferentially chosen to be normal to the loading axis which ends up decreasing the stiffness along the loading axis, leading to higher strain as compared to epoxies. Over longer timescales, the increased strain leads to faster damage localization in tertiary creep where the largest void grows to a critical volume beyond which healing is no longer possible. Thus, chemistry changes or additives that can prevent the initial realignment of dynamic bonds can be an effective strategy to mitigate creep in vitrimers.

The Black Industrial Engineers (BIndx, pronounced BIND-ex) group is composed of IOE students and faculty who come together informally for meaningful conversations and fellowship to promote learning, mentoring, and networking. The BIndx program was initiated to promote a learning space where students feel comfortable engaging with faculty. BIndx meetings occur as informal monthly discussions to help form relationships between faculty and minoritized students. BIndx hosts a diverse group of guest speakers throughout the semester with a specific focus to facilitate conversations, build connections, and empower self-reflection.

What happens to our campus community this summer if the Supreme Court, in two cases against Harvard & UNC, bans the consideration of race in college admissions? How will the race based biases that we inherently carry impact our ability to build intercultural competence if the community has no diversity to challenge those biases? In this discussion on disrupting bias we will consider its impact on the quality of education large universities are able to provide.

The adoption of home devices connected to the internet is growing and so are concerns about child physical and digital safety and privacy in the smart home. The U-M community is invited to join us on Zoom for a presentation and Q&A with Kaiwen Sun, U-M School of Information Ph.D. student, as she explores the discrepancies between marketing depictions and device features, and discusses considerations for keeping children safe in the smart home.

Kaiwen Sun’s research focuses on the intersection of children’s privacy and safety and understanding parents’ perceptions and behaviors around privacy and safety in the context of smart home technologies.

This event is open to the U-M community (umich login required) and will be especially relevant to parents, grandparents, guardians, and others who interact with children in their homes.

In this workshop we will work on how to make effective stylistic choices for the types of writing you are doing and the academic identity you wish to convey to your readers in various writing contexts. Bring a text you are currently working on for analysis. Please come prepared to participate actively in small group discussions.

Cydney K. Seigerman is a Ph.D. candidate in the Integrative Conservation & Anthropology program at the University of Georgia, where they work with Dr. Don Nelson and are a member of the Human Environmental Change Lab (HECL). Cydney is an NSF Graduate Research Fellow and a research scholar at the Cearense Meteorological and Water Resources Foundation (Funceme) in Ceará, Brazil.

Their dissertation work explores how socionatural (i.e., interrelated sociopolitical, environmental, and technological) processes shape and are shaped by the lived experience of water insecurity in Ceará, northeast Brazil.

Before pursuing their Ph.D., Cydney studied chemistry and Spanish language and literature at the University of Michigan, graduating from the Residential College and Honors College. They then relocated to Madrid, Spain, where they served as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant, studied acting at the theater school La Lavandería, and ran competitively.

MPSDS JPSM Seminar Series
February 15, 2023
12:00 - 1:00 EST

Richard Valliant, PhD, is a research professor emeritus at the Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan, and at the Joint Program in Survey Methodology at the University of Maryland. He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, an elected member of the International Statistical Institute, and has been an associate editor of the Journal of the American Statistical Association, Journal of Official Statistics, and Survey Methodology.

The Evolution of the Use of Models in Survey Sampling

The use of models in survey estimation has evolved over the last five (or more) decades. This talk will trace some of the developments over time and attempt to review some of the history. Consideration of models for estimating descriptive statistics began as early as the 1940's when Cochran and Jessen proposed linear regression estimators of means. These were early examples of model-assisted estimation since the properties of the Cochran-Jessen estimators were calculated with respect to a random sampling distribution. Model-thinking was used informally through the 1960's to form ratio and linear regression estimators that could in some applications reduce design variances.

In a 1963 Australian Journal of Statistics paper, Brewer presented results for a ratio estimator that were entirely based on a super population model. Royall (Biometrika 1970 and later papers) formalized the theory for a more general prediction approach using linear models. Since that time, the use of models is ubiquitous in the survey estimation literature and has been extended to nonparametric, empirical likelihood, Bayesian, small area, machine learning, and other approaches. There remains a considerable gap between the more advanced techniques in the literature and the methods commonly used in practice.

In parallel to the model developments, the design-based, randomization approach was dominating official statistics in the US largely due to the efforts of Morris Hansen and his colleagues at the US Census Bureau. In 1937 Hansen and others at the Census Bureau designed a follow-on sample survey to a special census of the employed and partially employed because response to the census was incomplete and felt to be inaccurate. The sample estimates were judged to be more trustworthy than those of the census itself. This began Hansen’s career-long devotion to random sampling as the only trustworthy method for obtaining samples from finite populations and for making inferences.

Model-assisted estimation, as discussed in the 1992 book by Särndal, Swensson, and Wretman is a type of compromise where models are used to construct estimators while a randomization distribution is used to compute properties like means and variances. This thinking has led to the popularity of doubly robust approaches where the goal is to have estimators with good properties with respect to both a randomization and a model distribution.

The field has now reached a troubling crossroads in which response rates to many types of surveys have plummeted and nonprobability datasets are touted as a way of obtaining reasonable quality data at low cost. Sophisticated model-based mathematical methods have been developed for estimation from nonprobability samples. In some applications, e.g., administrative data files that are incomplete due to late reporting, these methods may work well. However, in others the quality of nonprobability sample data is irremediably bad as illustrated by Kennedy in her 2022 Hansen lecture. In some situations, we are back in Morris' 1937 situation where standard approaches no longer work. Methods are needed to evaluate whether acceptable estimates can be made from the most suspect data sets. Nonetheless. nonprobability datasets are readily available now, and it is up to the statistical profession to develop good methods for using them.

Register to join the 2023 Privacy@Michigan keynote with Dr. Kirsten Martin on Friday, February 17 at 11 a.m.

Dr. Kirsten Martin for a Privacy@Michigan keynote presentation on privacy expectations on online platforms. Standard approaches to privacy assume individuals relinquish privacy expectations when online or have focused on individuals in relation to a single company. Platforms, such as social media, marketplaces, search engines, etc, are unique in having duties beyond a standard company while also having access to the data of millions of individuals. Dr. Martin will discuss how we need to think about platforms, particularly powerful platforms, as having an obligation to respect the privacy of their users and what that obligation actually entails. Dr. Martin is a University of Michigan College of Engineering alumna.

Dr. Florian Schaub, Assistant Professor of Information, School of Information and Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, College of Engineering, will facilitate Q&A time after the keynote presentation.

This hybrid event will be hosted in person in Forum Hall, on the fourth floor of Palmer Commons, and livestreamed on the Privacy@Michigan events page [https://safecomputing.umich.edu/events/privacy-at-michigan/privacy-day-2023/Keynote-Dr-Martin]

Refreshments will be available just prior to the event.

Chris Rutledge is the 2023 Willie Hobbs Moore Distinguished Alumni Lectureship award winner.

Engineers today require a more comprehensive skill set and a broader personal network than ever before. The world’s problems are complex, and engineers must understand how these issues intersect to develop effective solutions. Creating a foundational toolset is paramount to addressing these problems. Additionally, the ability to communicate to both a technical audience and to non-technical decision makers are the keys to successful achievement of objectives. This talk will also trace a journey from rural East Texas to Distinguished Engineer at one of the biggest telecommunications companies in the world.

Bio
Christopher Rutledge is a Distinguished Engineer at Verizon and holds numerous patents in next generation communications technology. His philosophy is that all problems are eagerly waiting to be solved. With a BS in Electrical Engineering from Prairie View, an MS in Electrical Engineering from Michigan, and rich experiences across both public and private sectors, he has honed his ability to provide solutions in the midst of concurrent crises while embracing the accompanying chaos. He is currently responsible for the development of a Device Management platform that has, in 5 years, grown from 6 Verizon Business customers to well over 260,000, including over a half-million students learning remotely during the pandemic.

Christopher comes from a family of teachers dating back to reconstruction in the Great State of Texas and is the proud father of two Wolverines. Being a Track Parent, he still employs Statics & Dynamics while strength training young athletes at his home in New Jersey.

Zoom information will be shared via email. Contact Ann Stals for more information.

Topic: *Simulation for the Design of Sodium Heat Pipes bundle Test Facility for the Application of Microreactors*

The 20 MW Special Purpose Reactor (SPR) is a heat pipe cooled microreactor that designed for electricity production in remote locations where reliable power grids are not always available. The key to SPR is the alkali metal heat pipes, which offer entirely passive operation capacity with high mobility. Prior to deployment, safety analysis with postulated accident scenarios is required for the licensing of SPR. To this regard, a sufficiently accurate model is crucial to predict the behavior of heat pipes, and high-resolution data is needed for the safety analysis of SPR. However, the current existing heat pipe models are either oversimplified or unpractical expensive in view of the difficulty of the simulation with the wick structure and two-phase flow in the heat pipe. Therefore, high fidelity experimental data is required for model verification in the high temperature heat pipe bundle system. The Michigan Sodium Heat Pipe bundle test facility which serves as a scale-down test facility using ten sodium heat pipes with a triangular array, was utilized to verify the model for the licensing of SPR. In the talk, the feasibility analysis using Computer Aided Engineering and Computational Fluid Dynamics for the design of the test facility was addressed.

Topic: *Modeling CTL-mediated Tumor Cell Death Mechanisms and the Activity of Immune Checkpoints in Immunotherapy*

Immunotherapy has dramatically transformed the cancer treatment landscape. Of the variety of types of immunotherapies available, immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), which block inhibitory signals from tumor cells and reinvigorate killing activities of immune cells, have gained the spotlight. Although ICIs have shown promising results for some patients, the low response rates in many cancers highlight the challenges of using immune checkpoint blockade as an effective treatment. Cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) execute their cell-killing function via two distinct mechanisms. The first process is fast-acting and perforin/granzyme-mediated, and the second is a slower, Fas ligand (FasL)-driven killing mechanism. There is also evidence suggesting that the preferred killing mechanism by CTLs depends on the antigenicity of tumor cells. To determine the key factors affecting responses to checkpoint blockade therapy, we constructed an ordinary differential equation model describing in vivo tumor-immune dynamics in the presence of active or blocked PD-1/PDL1 immune checkpoint. Specifically, we analyzed which aspects of the tumor-immune landscape affect the response to ICIs with endpoints of tumor size and composition in the short and long term. By generating a virtual cohort with heterogeneous tumor and immune attributes, we also simulated the therapeutic outcomes of immune checkpoint blockade in a largely diverse population. In this way, we identified key tumor and immune characteristics that are associated with tumor elimination, dormancy and escape. This talk will also shed light on which fraction of a population potentially responds well to ICIs and ways to enhance therapeutic outcomes with combination therapy.

Digital Scholarship 101: Advocating For Your Digital Project (March 8, 2023 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/100630 100630-21800161@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, March 8, 2023 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: LSA Technology Services

Please join us for the final workshop in the DS 101 series, which brings it all together. You’ve got a great plan for your research project. It’s conceptualized, and you know how you’ll manage the labor, materials, and information. How do you describe the value of your project in your CV or when you are up for review? And how will people know about it and find it once it exists? Building upon the themes in the DS 101 workshop series, this workshop will discuss how to communicate the successes and impact of your digital project to make it legible to fellow researchers and university administration. This session will provide guidance on how to best communicate and highlight to external and internal stakeholders the deliverables and anticipated outcomes of your project.

Note: This workshop will be held on Zoom. You will receive a reminder and a Zoom link one hour before the workshop.

About the Digital Scholarship 101 workshop series:

This series of workshops helps scholars avoid outdated projects, unpreserved knowledge, uncredited labor, and privacy or consent issues by emphasizing process in the project life cycle. Workshop participants learn how to conceptualize the life cycle of a project using human-centered design and backwards modelling when planning their projects to better understand how to version, archive, and preserve their research projects. Throughout the series, thematic questions around sustainability, preservation, accessibility, privacy, consent, grant requirements, and teaching with research will be examined. We encourage you to come with a project in mind and bring materials if available, but is not required to attend.
