As we celebrate the library’s centennial, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.

It builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

Abstract:
Remarkable advances have been made in science and technology for magnetic fusion energy, leading to construction of new devices that aim to demonstrate net energy gain. However, significant technical challenges must be overcome to reach the year-long operation timescales required for a power plant. This talk will focus on the leading concept, the tokamak, and look at next steps needed for 1) production and control of a sustained fusion plasma, 2) development of materials that can withstand the extreme fusion environment, and 3) harnessing fusion power. Sophisticated integrated modeling tools are enabling tightly coupled plasma, nuclear, and engineering predictive modeling of the fusion core, first wall, blanket, magnets, etc. Such ‘virtual test beds’ aim to shorten development time and guide design decisions to quickly arrive at innovative solutions that maximize the probability of meeting Fusion Pilot Plant (FPP) goals and enable optimization to impact commercial viability and timely delivery of fusion power.

About the Speaker:
Cami Collins is a plasma physicist and section head in the Fusion Energy Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where she is working to find a solution to create and sustain a burning plasma needed for an economical fusion energy pilot plant. Her specific research is in the experimental development of steady-state tokamak scenarios, and in applying integrated physics and engineering computational tools for design and assessment of fusion reactors. Cami received her Ph.D. in 2013 from the U. of Wisconsin Madison, where she received an American Physical Society Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award for her work in laboratory plasma astrophysics. She completed a postdoc through the University of California Irvine at the DIII-D National Fusion Facility, became a staff scientist at General Atomics in 2016 specializing in spectroscopy diagnostics and energetic particle physics, and joined ORNL in 2020. Driven by a long-time passion for the success of fusion energy, she has served in multiple fusion outreach and strategic planning activities, including the APS-DPP Community Planning Process and the U.S. ITER Research Program.

Dr. Collins won the MIPSE Early Career Award 2023.

When we consider working toward social justice, it's common to focus on what we don’t want: systemic racism, sexual violence, a police state. What about what we do want? Drawing on Robin D.G. Kelley’s Freedom Dreams, and the exploration of “Latinx Freedom Dreams” in Dr. Sara Awartani’s Arts&Resistance theme course by the same name, this workshop will invite participants to envision what those dreams actually feel like -- and what we can practice, together and today -- to bring those dreams closer to our lived reality. We'll play with Theatre of the Oppressed and Creative Drama techniques and explore a host of strategies for participatory invitations that might move an audience. Then, the group will devise (ie., collaboratively create) short participatory performance pieces about social issues or social movements that have material impact on them. At the end of the workshop, we'll have all come a little bit closer to freedom.

How do we equip K-12 educators to survive devastating attacks on the culture war frontlines? K-12 public educators Matthew Hawn (Tennessee high school social studies teacher) and Elissa Malespina (New Jersey high school librarian) were targeted for having conversations about white privilege and racial equity and justice in a contemporary issues class and for ensuring students’ access to LGBTQ+ and racially diverse books in the school library.

Hawn and Malespina were fired from their jobs, appeared in national headlines, and (in Hawn's case) faced state discipline. During the event, they will share the realities of being under attack and offer advice on creative, sustainable strategies for educators, pre-service educators, and allies to prepare and protect themselves and to fight back collaboratively.

Registration for in-person attendance is suggested, though not required.

Join us for an intimate conversation between two leading voices for rural prosperity: Tony Pipa (Scholar, Center for Sustainable Development, Brookings Institution, and Host, Reimagine Rural Podcast), who will share his experiences visiting rural communities across the country, and Sarah Lucas (Director, Office of Rural Development, Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development), who will highlight inspiring stories from within the state of Michigan.

Pipa founded the Reimagining Rural Policy initiative to modernize U.S. policy for equitable rural development and also leads a global initiative to advance sustainable development at the local level. With three decades of executive leadership experience, his background includes key roles at the U.S. Agency for International Development, leading the U.S. delegation at the UN for the adoption of the SDGs, and fostering philanthropic ventures for community and economic development in US communities. He currently serves as vice-chair of StriveTogether, as a steering committee member of the Mobility Alliance, and contributes to various other advisory committees.

Lucas’s career achievements in community and economic development have led to enduring coalitions, policy changes, and heightened regional growth. Her past roles include CEO of the Lake Superior Community Partnership, founding Executive Director of Housing North, and pivotal positions with Networks Northwest and the Western Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Region. Her leadership extends to regional and statewide boards, including the Community and Economic Development Association of Michigan, Economic Development Leaders of Michigan, and the Michigan Association of Planning.

The conversation, hosted at the Ford School by the Center for Local, State, and Urban Policy (CLOSUP) and the Graham Sustainability Institute, will be followed by a public Q&A. Refreshments will be served.

Join Planet Blue Student Leaders (PBSL)and Ann Arbor's Common Cycle for a winter bike repair pop-up on the Diag on November 16th!

As a part of our "Sustainability & You" week, all students are welcome to receive free help to fix up their bikes before winter! Common Cycle will be there to help you learn how to take care of your bike and how to ride safely through the winter months. Our stand will run from 11am-1pm in the Diag.

The alternative Weather location is outside the Dentistry School, facing N University Ave.

If you're not able to make it, check out the UMich Student social media pages that week to access resources for winter cycling and free bike maintenance in Ann Arbor! Additional Common Cycle and PBSL resources can be found in the links for this event.

No reservations or payments are needed. Free and open to all students. Note that this may result in lines and longer wait times for support. Expected for students to remain there while their bike is being worked on and to aid in said process-no experience in repair necessary, just a willingness to learn!

DPSS will be promoting on-campus property registration, bike safety, and resources for bike theft prevention, with a limited distribution of U-locks upon registration to UM affiliates who do not already have one.

Special thanks to Ann Arbor Common Cycle-learn more about them in the attached links!

Undergraduate student Mirit Skeen directs this senior thesis show, a performance of *Accidental Death of an Anarchist* by Dario Fo, translated by Ed Emery. Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Performance: Directing.

Dario Fo's *Accidental Death of an Anarchist* is a 1970 political satire that concerns the accidental (or not) death of a supposed anarchist rail worker who fell (or was pushed) to his death from a fourth-story window of the police headquarters in Milan. It is based on the 1969 Piazza Fontana bombing and the real-life defenestration of a man during police interrogation. The play itself is a fictionalized version of the aftermath, following the officers responsible as they attempt to rewrite the truth of the event, all while being egged on by a Maniac with a penchant for disguises and making clowns out of cops.

In the 1970s, Fereydoun Farrokhzad was a significant cultural icon, a sex symbol, and a chart-topping pop singer whose music and television programs were heard and viewed by millions of Iranians. A decade later, living in political exile in Germany, he still performed to sold-out audiences in Europe. That changed on August 7, 1992, when he was found brutally murdered in his apartment in Bonn. Neighbors said his dogs had been barking for two nights.

The murder, still unsolved, serves as the starting point for this new work by British-Iranian theater maker Javaad Alipoor, whose The Believers Are But Brothers was featured in the 2020 No Safety Net theater festival. Selected as one of The Guardian’s Top Theatre Shows of 2022, Things Hidden “gleefully mashes up genres, smashing together the quiet authority of the murder mystery podcast, the intimacy of autobiographical storytelling, and the visual spectacle of multimedia performance — while simultaneously deconstructing each of these forms.” (The Guardian)

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Wallace House Center for Journalists

Literati is proud to welcome Laura Meckler to present and discuss her book Dream Town: Shaker Heights and the Quest for Racial Equity. Laura will be joined in conversation by Dr. Brianne Dotson.

About the Book: Can a group of well-intentioned people fulfill the promise of racial integration in America?

In this searing and intimate examination of the ideals and realities of racial integration, award-winning Washington Post journalist Laura Meckler tells the story of a decades-long pursuit in Shaker Heights, Ohio, and uncovers the roadblocks that have threatened progress time and again--in housing, in education, and in the promise of shared community.

In the late 1950s, Shaker Heights began groundbreaking work that would make it a national model for housing integration. And beginning in the seventies, it was known as a crown jewel in the national move to racially integrate schools. The school district built a reputation for academic excellence and diversity, serving as a model for how white and Black Americans can thrive together. Meckler--herself a product of Shaker Heights--takes a deeper look into the place that shaped her, investigating its complicated history and its ongoing challenges in order to untangle myth from truth. She confronts an enduring, and troubling, question--if Shaker Heights has worked so hard at racial equity, why does a racial academic achievement gap persist?

In telling the stories of the Shakerites who have built and lived in this community, Meckler asks: What will it take to fulfill the promise of racial integration in America? What compromises are people of all races willing to make? What does success look like, and has Shaker achieved it? The result is a complex and masterfully reported portrait of a place that, while never perfect, has achieved more than most and a road map for communities that seek to do the same.

Laura Meckler (she/her/hers) is national education writer for the Washington Post, where she covers education across the country as well as national education policy and politics. She previously reported on the White House, presidential politics, immigration, and health care for the Wall Street Journal, as well as health and social policy for the Associated Press. Her honors include a Nieman Fellowship and Livingston Award for National Reporting, and she was part of a team that won the George Polk Award for Justice Reporting. She lives in Washington, D.C., with her husband and two sons.

Dr. Brianne Dotson (she/her/hers) is the mother of two confident, creative, and inquisitive little girls who attend Ann Arbor Public Schools. She also serves as a Sr. Program Associate at WestEd, a national nonpartisan research and service agency, where she specializes in equity-focused systems change for state departments of education and school districts. Prior to WestEd, Brianne served as an English language arts teacher, elementary school principal, and a director at the University of Michigan. Dr. Dotson holds an Ed.D. from Michigan State University, an Ed.M. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and a B.A. from the University of Southern California.

Ann Jeffers shares her journey with mental illness, including receiving a diagnosis of bipolar disorder with psychotic features while she was on the tenure-track in the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan. Her illness was complicated by the trauma she experienced as a graduate student at Virginia Tech from multiple incidents of violence including the 2007 mass shooting. At the advice of her medical team, she kept her mental illness hidden from the University of Michigan and continued to teach, attend conferences, and conduct research while actively symptomatic. Her memoir documents her experiences at the height of the illness. Now a tenured associate professor, Jeffers has become a vocal advocate for mental health and disability justice on campus and in the community.

This event is a hybrid event. This includes an author discussion and Q&A from 6:30 - 7:30 PM ET followed by a reception with coffee, tea, and desserts until 8:30 PM. Remote CART services are available.

Imogen Says Nothing (November 30, 2023 7:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/108267 108267-21819194@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, November 30, 2023 7:30pm
Location: Power Center for the Performing Arts
Organized By: School of Music, Theatre & Dance

In the first folio of Shakepeare’s *Much Ado About Nothing*, a character named Imogen appears briefly in the stage directions. She speaks no lines and is probably a typo.

In Aditi Kapil’s *Imogen Says Nothing*, Imogen is a woman in Elizabethan England whose life is changed by the opportunity to appear in a performance of *Much Ado About Nothing* – an opportunity reserved solely for men. Imogen appears on stage as a woman playing a man playing a woman. To make matters more complicated, Imogen is also a bear.

A revisionist comedy in verse and prose, this feminist hijacking of Shakespeare investigates the voices that have long been absent from the theatrical canon, and the consequences of cutting them.

*Imogen Says Nothing* premiered on January 20, 2017, at the Yale Repertory Theatre, which also commissioned the play, in New Haven, Connecticut.

Written by Aditi Kapil
Directed by Malcolm Tulip

FUN FACTS: Aditi Kapil took the title from a piece of dialogue in *Much Ado About Nothing*. Beatrice, when describing Benedick, says, “The one is too like an image and says nothing.”

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: School of Music, Theatre & Dance

This lecture begins at 7:15pm before the 8:00 pm USO performance, featuring music by Hansol Choi (*Samdo*, world premiere), Jonathan Leshnoff (*Concerto for Two Percussionists*) and Shostakovich (Symphony No. 5).

Kenneth Kiesler, conductor
Yeo Ryeong Ahn, conductor
Ian Antonio and Douglas Perkins, percussion

In its final concert of 2023, the University Symphony Orchestra (USO) performs one of the greatest and most often performed symphonies of the 20th Century, a new piece by a composer-percussionist and a recent work for two percussion soloists.

The concert opens with the world premiere of *Samdo*, by Hansol Choi. A reinterpretation of intense traditional Korean music for orchestra, this colorful and exciting piece utilizes traditional Korean percussion quartet music, Samulnori, and combines various traditional Korean rhythmic patterns with shamanistic music and popular Korean folk songs. *Samdo* will be conducted by Yeo Ryeong Ahn, native of Seoul, Korea, and orchestral conducting student in her final year as a doctoral student in orchestral conducting.

Renowned percussionists and SMTD faculty members Ian Antonio and Douglas Perkins are featured in the highly charged and virtuosic *Concerto for Two Percussionists* by Jonathan Leshnoff, followed by the Fifth Symphony by Shostakovich.

For most of his life, Shostakovich tried to stay in the good graces of the government while being true to himself and his art. In 1934, after Stalin went to see Shostakovich’s new opera *Lady Macbeth of Mtensk*, Pravda published an article, possibly written by Stalin himself, which condemned the composer and his new opera, calling it “chaos instead of music.” Shostakovich aimed to redeem (protect) himself with his new symphony, which he described as “A Soviet Artist's Response to Just Criticism.” At its premiere, which received an ovation lasting more than 30 minutes, he managed to please the government while sending the masses a very different message of resistance and forced optimism. Its epic quality and combination of brass fanfares, soulful songs, folk music, militaristic marches, and sounds of the Russian Orthodox Church, has made it one of the most popular pieces in the repertoire of symphony orchestras worldwide.

SYMPOSIUM ON CREATIVE CLASSICAL PEDAGOGIES

Co-sponsored by Contexts for Classics and Topics in Classical Intersectionalities

Friday, December 8, 2023
11 am - 4pm, Classics Library, 2175 Angell Hall

11-12:00 Keynote Address

Dr. Hannah Silverblank, Brown University
How to crip the dictionary: A pedagogical proposal for ancient language study

This talk combines a meditation on the politics of Greek-English lexicography with a proposal for a speculative pedagogical collaboration called the “Anti-Lexicon.” The essential aim of the Anti-Lexicon is to challenge and expand the range of meanings that make themselves available to twenty-first century students and scholars of ancient languages and cultures, with awareness of the implicit exclusionary ideologies that have operated within the history of the discipline of Classics. Steeped in questions emerging from disability justice, crip pedagogy, and the language(s) of disability, this talk invites students and teachers of Classics to consider how we might practice non-traditional acts of lexicography as inclusive collaborations geared toward cultivating more nuanced understandings of ancient linguistic meaning in the classroom.

12:15-1:15 Panel One

Netta Berlin, “Dissident Voices in the Teaching of Greek Myth”

Fernando Gorab Leme, “Reception as a pedagogical tool to present (and challenge) the Classics and their primacy”

Amanda Kubic, “Bringing Gender and Disability Studies into the ‘Great Books’ Classroom: A Case Study of Euripides’ Hecuba and Trojan Women

1:30-2:30 Panel Two

Robert Santucci, “Fan Fiction in Ancient Rome”

Ian Moyer, “Incorporating “critical fabulation” into ancient history courses”

Sanjana Ramanathan, “Unraveling the epic: postcolonial presence through cross-temporal comparison"

2:45-3:45 Panel Three
Natalie Francis, “‘‘Difficult Parents, Protean Dance’: Theorizing Queer Kinship from Lucian’s Pan(tomime) to RF Kuang’s Babel (2022)”

Brittany Hardy, “Incorporating Principles of Ecopedagogy into Your Classics Curriculum”

Ukulele master Jake Shimabukuro brings joy to the world this holiday season with Holidays in Hawai’i.

Known for his lightning-fast fingers, Shimabukuro saw his career skyrocket two decades ago when his video of George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” was posted on YouTube without his knowledge and became one of the first videos to go viral on the platform. His seemingly limitless vocabulary, on perhaps the unlikeliest of instruments, has brought new appreciation to the four-string instrument, causing many to call him “the Jimi Hendrix of the ukulele.” Beloved for his open, magical, and transcendent connection with audiences, Shimabukuro draws on a vibrant catalog of holiday classics for this return appearance, performing alongside Jackson Waldhoff (bass), and other musicians to be announced.

Two of today’s most celebrated artists join forces in an innovative program for two pianos that celebrates the music of George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, and more.

Born of a serendipitous encounter where the two musicians discovered their common love for two-piano music and the Gershwin era, this event showcases each artist’s unique gifts for creativity, virtuosity, and joy. Feinstein is one of the leading authorities on the Great American Songbook, and he and Thibaudet dig deep into the extraordinary heritage of music from the 20th century that straddles the worlds of classical and popular, connecting the two with rich anecdotes and incredible musicality. BARE is a coming-of-age rock musical with music by Damon Intrabartolo, and lyrics and a book by Jon Hartmere. A group of high school seniors at a Catholic boarding school faces issues of sexuality and personal identity. As they struggle to come to terms with who they are, and who the world thinks they should be, they seek answers from their Church, their friends, and ultimately, from within themselves. Its rich, vibrant score draws on many styles of contemporary music.

An exceptional pianist with an original and probing mind who takes no note for granted.” (Los Angeles Times)

Hélène Grimaud is a deeply passionate and committed musical artist with multiple talents that extend far beyond the instrument she plays with such poetic expression and peerless technical control. A committed wildlife conservationist, she is also a compassionate human rights activist and a writer; but it is through her thoughtful and tenderly expressive music-making that she most deeply touches the emotions of audiences. After her UMS debut in 2015 as featured soloist with the Rotterdam Philharmonic, she was due to return in March 2020 for her UMS recital debut. Four years later, we look forward to bringing her back to the Hill Auditorium stage at last.

A Novel Methodology for Improving Applications of Modern Predictive Modeling Tools to Linked Data Sets Subject to Mismatch Error

In recent years, the rise of social media platforms such as Twitter/X has provided social scientists with a wealth of user-content data, and there has been renewed interest in the utility of administrative records for increasing survey efficiency. Combining social media data, administrative records, and survey data has the potential to produce a comprehensive source of information for social research. These data are often collected from multiple sources and combined by probabilistic record linkage. For the analysis of these linked data files, advanced machine learning techniques, such as random forests, boosting, and related ensemble methods, have become essential tools for survey methodologists and data scientists. There is, however, a potential pitfall in the widespread application of these techniques to linked data sets that needs more attention. Linkage errors such as mismatch and missed-match errors can distort the true relationships between variables and adversely alter the performance metrics routinely output by predictive modeling techniques, such as variable importance, confusion matrices, RMSE, etc. Thus, the actual predictive performance of these machine-learning techniques may not be realized. In this presentation, I will describe a new general methodology designed to adjust modern predictive modeling techniques for the presence of mismatch errors in linked data sets. The proposed approach, based on mixture modeling, is general enough to accommodate various predictive modeling techniques in a unified fashion. I evaluate the performance of the new methodology with simulations implemented in R. I will conclude with recommendations for future work in this area.

What "arts" did Americans in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries use to resist various forms of power? The exhibit aims to show how the people of our nation's past tried to answer those questions

Exhibit Hours: Monday - Friday - Noon - 4 pm

Jenna Moon, SMTD doctoral alumna, performs on the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Carillon, an instrument of 60 bells with the lowest bell (bourdon) weighing 6 tons.

Thirty-minute recitals are performed on the Lurie Carillon every weekday that classes are in session. During these recitals, visitors may take the elevator to level 2 to view the largest bells, or to level 3 to see the carillonist performing. (Visitors subject to acrophobia are recommended to visit level 2 only.) An optional spiral stairway between levels 2 and 3 allows for up-close views of some of the largest bells.
