This event celebrates the legacies of Sarah Goddard Power and Rhetaugh Dumas by recognizing current staff, scholars, and units that are carrying forward shared values through named awards.

The awards, given by the Academic Women’s Caucus, will be presented from 3:00-5:30 p.m. on February 7 in the Koessler Room of the Michigan League, 911 N. University Ave. The awards ceremony will conclude with a 30-minute carillon concert from 5-5:30 p.m., performed by Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra who will premiere her original work, “Empower,” in honor of Sarah Goddard Power.

The Sarah Goddard Power & Rhetaugh G. Dumas Progress in Diversifying awards are presented on behalf of the Academic Women’s Caucus, which was founded in 1975 with the charge ”to develop an inclusive organization of all women faculty members of the Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint campuses of the University of Michigan which will serve as a forum for the exchange of information about the status of faculty women at the University and as a focus for action necessary to the investigation and resolution of their special concerns.”

We'd like to invite you to a new event series this semester, the Queer World Conversations! These will be weekly discussions on a variety of topics, but all of them will be discussed with a queer lens. We'll bring the topic, you bring the discussion! Everyone is welcome to join the Conversations, and the voices of those most impacted by the week's topic will be prioritized.

Topics will be announced the week before on our social medias and on the event pages. Registration is not required, nor is consistent attendance. Come when you want, bring your friends, and let's have a Conversation!

Upcoming topics:
4/12/23 - Weight Inclusivity

There are a lot of social ideas of what someone's body "should" look like, especially when it comes to weight. Body positivity is more visible than ever, but so is fatphobia. With the help of our friends of the School of Public Health's Weight Inclusive Initiative, we'll dive into the ways that queer bodies and queer cultures interact with and complicate the already complex ideas we have around one's weight. Are queer people held to a higher standard than non-queer folks? Do we hold each other to higher standards within our own community? Are there any major connections between fatphobia and gender dysphoria?

Spectrum Center Event Accessibility Statement:
The Spectrum Center is dedicated to working towards offering equitable access to all of the events we organize. If you have an accessibility need you feel may not be automatically met at this event, there is space to report that in the registration, or you can fill out our Event Accessibility Form, found at http://bit.ly/SCaccess. You do not need to have a registered disability with the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) or identify as disabled to submit. Advance notice is necessary for some accommodations to be fully implemented, and we will always attempt to dismantle barriers as they are brought up to us. Any questions about accessibility at Spectrum Center events can be directed to spectrumcenter@umich.edu.

Join Trotter Multicultural Center, Department of Afroamerican and African Studies, and the LEAD Scholars Program to explore the many dimensions of wellness through the lens of personal and social identities. Using a wellness model from University Health Service, our events discuss the importance of holistic well-being in interactive programs facilitated by experts from on and off campus. During the sessions, we will hear from campus partners as they share tools, resources, and knowledge that may support our well-being.

Participants will dig into how plants and nature can affect their environments while exploring the Purple Coneflower’s cultural relevance and purpose. We will spend time learning about U-M alum Doug Jones, painting terra cotta pots and then participants have an opportunity to plant their own Purple Coneflower to take with them! Supplies provided to those that register.

Over the past twenty years, scores of universities have committed themselves to uncovering and reckoning with their ties to slavery as well as broader histories of exclusion and discrimination at their institutions. As the University of Michigan embarks on its own Inclusive History Project, this symposium will explore what it means for universities to undertake this work and what the future of these efforts might be. Panelists representing projects from Brown University, Harvard University, the University of Virginia, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison will discuss the principles that have guided their projects, the processes that have shaped them, the communities that have partnered with them, and the outcomes they have produced, including reparative measures.

• Kacie Lucchini Butcher (Public History Project Director, University of Wisconsin-Madison)
• James Campbell (Edgar E. Robinson Professor in United States History, Stanford University)
• Evelynn Hammonds (Barbara Gutmann Rosenkrantz Professor of the History of Science and Professor of African and African American Studies; Professor in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences, T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Harvard University; Audre Lorde Visiting Professor of Queer Studies, Spelman College)
• Kirt von Daacke (Assistant Dean and Professor of History, University of Virginia)
• Elizabeth Cole, moderator (University Diversity and Social Transformation Professor of Psychology, Women's and Gender Studies, and Afroamerican and African Studies; Director, National Center for Institutional Diversity, University of Michigan)
• Earl Lewis, moderator (Thomas C. Holt Distinguished University Professor of History, Afroamerican and African Studies and Public Policy; Director and founder, Center for Social Solutions, University of Michigan)

This event presented by the Inclusive History Project and the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

Amali Tower is the founder and executive director of Climate Refugees. She has extensive global experience in refugee protection, refugee resettlement and in forced migration and displacement contexts, having worked globally for numerous NGOs, the UN Refugee Agency and the US Refugee Admissions Program. Years of interviewing refugees fleeing conflict afforded her the chance to hear their stories of also fleeing climate change. Through this, Climate Refugees was born. She has conducted country and regional case studies and research in climate-induced displacement contexts, including in urban and camp settings. Her research on climate, conflict and displacement in the Lake Chad Basin in Africa’s Sahel was presented as evidence of loss and damage at COP 26 in Glasgow. Amali serves displaced populations as an experienced defender and her clients as a partner and advisor. She developed her work ethic, world views and deep commitment to forcibly displaced populations through a lived experience of instability, and as an immigrant and migrant. She’s born of that education, life in multiple countries, and also those at Columbia University, where she has a Master of International Affairs focused in Human Rights from the School of International and Public Affairs, and a BA in International Development Studies from UCLA. Valentine's Day is right around the corner, so let's talk about how our identities interact with our conceptions of love, both romantically and platonically. As we all know, cultural experiences and traditional behaviors all influence our expressions and experiences of love, and deeply impact the way we give and receive it. For this event, residents will interact on a deeper level, sharing experiences and stories regarding their perceptions of love. The event will be an hour, with 5 minute rounds during which people will share a conversation with a new person.

The main objective is to allow for diverse perspectives and experiences to bring a greater sense of unity around love, especially as Valentine's day approaches. There is always a place for you, especially on Valentine's day, and you never have to be alone. All are welcome!

Location: East Quadrangle
Organized By: Residential College

Despite recent panels and scholarship aiming to dispel the notion, there is a conception that contemporary art and religion are incompatible.

When paired with the Islamophobic sentiment that Islam is destructive, rather than constructive like artistic practices and that it even forbids many forms of artistic production, there is a presumption that contemporary art that engages with Islam as religion and faith (rather than simply as identity) cannot exist.

There is an additional assumption that those who identify as women, queer, trans, and non-binary are unlikely to engage with Islam in their work outside of critique, because of the belief that Islam is inherently (and uniquely) oppressive of and therefore contradictory to individuals who identify as such.

In an attempt to disabuse viewers of these notions, as well as give a space of exploration to these often overlooked or excluded voices, this exhibition brings together women, queer, trans, and non-binary Muslim artists who explore their connection to religion, their other identities (be those related to their race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, or status as artists), and their practices.

Matt Diemer, University of Michigan

The emerging Critical Quantitative (CQ) perspective is anchored by five guiding principles (i.e., foundation, goals, parity, subjectivity, and self-reflexivity) to mitigate racism and advance social justice. Within this broader methodological perspective, sound measurement is foundational to the quantitative enterprise. Despite the problematic history of measurement, it can be repurposed for critical and equitable ends. MIMIC (Multiple Indicator and MultIple Causes) models are a measurement strategy to simply and efficiently test whether a measure means the same thing and can be measured in the same way across groups (e.g., racial/ethnic and/or gender). This talk considers the affordances and limitations of MIMICs for critical quantitative methods, by detecting and mitigating racial, ethnic, gendered, and other forms of bias in items and in measures.

Students combine coursework with an internship that reflects their particular area of interest (such as American politics, international studies, history, the arts, public health, economics, the media, the environment, science, and technology). Students work four days a week, attend an elective one evening a week, and a research course on Friday mornings. They spend their weekends exploring the city and taking in cultural events.

Anti-fat bias remains one of the final frontiers -- often left unscrutinized by those committed to social justice. Pervasive in clinical settings across disciplines, anti-fat bias has detrimental physical and psychological impacts for individuals who live in larger bodies. This session, facilitated by Caroline Calloway and Diana Jasser, explores size as an identity and how to challenge intrapersonal, interpersonal, and systemic anti-fat bias within clinical settings and beyond. Open to all, but please register to receive the Zoom link prior to the session.

FAM Fridays is a series that will celebrate culture through Food, Art, & Music on one Friday of each month. We will explore the different foods our campus community and larger Ann Arbor community has to offer. The series will also showcase student creativity in art and music. This series is meant to amplify students from marginalized communities and build community through programming.

Join our organizations as we celebrate Latinx culture in Trotter! Be integrated in community, eat delicious food and get ready to dance! We will have a dance instructor teaching us how to cumbia & bachata while listening to vibrant music. Participants will have a chance to create their own art by working with any of our crafts available (beading, painting, etc.)

We will be enjoying Chela’s Restaurant & Taqueria during the event as well!

Join the Spectrum Center Programming Board for brunch and a guided book club-style discussion of the 119-page novella *The Empress of Salt and Fortune* by Nghi Vo, snacks provided! A limited number of digital copies are available for claim via the registration link. Book summary:

"A young royal from the far north is sent south for a political marriage in an empire reminiscent of imperial China. Her brothers are dead, her armies and their war mammoths long defeated and caged behind their borders. Alone and sometimes reviled, she must choose her allies carefully.

Rabbit, a handmaiden, sold by her parents to the palace for the lack of five baskets of dye, befriends the emperor's lonely new wife and gets more than she bargained for.

At once feminist high fantasy and an indictment of monarchy, this evocative debut follows the rise of the empress In-yo, who has few resources and fewer friends. She's a northern daughter in a mage-made summer exile, but she will bend history to her will and bring down her enemies, piece by piece."

For more info and to apply: https://www.cew.umich.edu/advocacy-initiatives/twink-frey-visiting-social-activist-program

Each year the Twink Frey Visiting Social Activist (TFVSA) Program brings to CEW+ a social justice activist whose work affects women and recognizes gender equity issues. One goal of the program is to build the capacity and effectiveness of social activists by giving the TFVSA time, space, and support to work on a project that would not be possible under the activist’s usual working circumstances.

The TFVSA program gives the selected TFVSA time for reflection, research, planning, and writing related to their area of activism. Each TFVSA is required to work on a project that will advance their future work and potentially benefit other activists.

If selected, the applicant is invited to reside near campus for up to one month or make intermittent visits to Ann Arbor and work remotely. The 2024 residency will take place during the winter semester with a presentation of their project the following fall semester at the CEW+ Annual Advocacy Symposium. The activist receives a $10,000 stipend to cover their expenses while in Ann Arbor. Travel expenses to and from Ann Arbor are separately reimbursed by the endowment fund.

ELIGIBILITY

The TFVSA program supports activists whose work addresses gender equity issues that affect the lives of women and/or girls. The program defines social justice and equity programs broadly to include activism in such areas as housing, employment, income support, food security, education, violence, child care, health care, and employer benefits like paid sick leave and retirement income.

Sense of Self: The Islamic Contemporary (March 17, 2023 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/105043 105043-21810640@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 17, 2023 10:00am

Join LSA Student Government and other sponsors in a free film screening, Americanish (2021), directed and co-written by Iman Zawahry, on Friday, March 17th, from 6:00-8:30 in the Hussey Room in the Michigan League. Viewers are invited into the home and lives of three marriage-aged women as they navigate the often turbulent waters of romance, culture, career, and family. Americanish delves into the complexity of trying to both honor and break from cultural traditions while balancing personal values and career goals in a society that does not always accommodate both. The film highlights different layers of womanhood intersecting with cultural and societal expectations. Following the film's screening, a panel of the director Iman Zawahry and lead actress and co-writer Aizzah Fatima will take place and have a Q&A portion. Snacks and refreshments will be provided! This event is a MESA AA&PI Heritage Month event.

Beginning the journey to your STARS: Designing and growing a successful program (March 21, 2023 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/105608 105608-21812262@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 21, 2023 12:00pm
Location: Center for the Education of Women
Organized By: CEW+

Facilitated by Cindy Lustig and STARS Group

Initiating and supporting under-represented students’ sustained involvement and success in research (or other areas of academia) is an inspiring goal. The STAR program’s student-led nature and small-group mentorship foster community and interconnectedness that last well beyond the program’s official duration. Some of our original graduate mentors are still in touch with their STAR mentees even though both have graduated from UM. STAR is a source of joy, purpose, and inspiration for those involved, and one we would love to share! However, setting up a new program can be intimidating. The workshop will be a lecture with plenty of stops for questions and discussion. We will start by describing STAR’s beginnings as a small pilot program, and the process by which we regularly assess its progress, make adjustments, and then expand it. We have made many of our materials available via a peer-reviewed publication (written by our graduate student mentors!) and on the Open Science Foundation. We hope that by the end of the workshop, participants will have a good roadmap for how to build a program in their units and may even take us up on our offer to “piggyback” on our sessions and train with our mentors for a first year to help you get started.

SCHOLARSHIP, TRANSFERABLE SKILLS, ACADEMIA & RESEARCH (STAR) SCHOLARS

STAR provides first- and second-year students and transfer students from under-represented, low-income, and/or first-generation college student backgrounds with workshops and small-group mentoring that overcome the barriers of the “hidden curriculum” and help them become involved in research.

Towards Solidarity: Allyship in Action is a new 6-hour workshop developed by the University of Michigan Spectrum Center. This workshop aims to deepen our UM community's understanding of, and ability to engage with, LGBTQIA2S+ allyship. In Towards Solidarity, we move beyond basic conceptualizations of allyship and challenge participants to center liberation as they show up actively for LGBTQ+ communities. Learning outcomes include:

Through their participation in this program, participants will:

- Develop their understanding of LGBTQIA2S+ allyship away from “ally” as an identity term and toward solidarity, a developmental, intersectional, and active set of practices;
- Increase self-awareness to more effectively be in solidarity with LGBTQ+ communities;
- Gain knowledge about how LGBTQ+ oppression operates on multiple levels
- Identify inclusive practices, skills, and resources to support LGBTQ+ communities, particularly at U-M;
- Commit to the practice of allyship and showing up in solidarity in their personal and professional lives

In this public offering of our workshop, lunch will be provided. We expect that all participants to complete our 1-hour webcourse prior to joining Towards Solidarity: Allyship in Action.

"In an ideal world, we’d succeed based on our actual skills and performance. But in the real world, subtle perceptions and stereotypes – about appearance, race, gender, experience and more – color others’ perceptions. The result might be that your hard work isn’t noticed or appreciated, your effort doesn’t lead to proportional rewards and your good ideas aren’t taken seriously. But it doesn’t have to be that way. As Harvard Business School Professor Laura Huang has discovered, there’s a way to flip stereotypes and obstacles in your favor. Drawing on compelling case studies and her groundbreaking research on overcoming bias, Huang explains that by finding your edge, you can turn perceived disadvantages into real strengths – and into real success." [Center for Positive Organizations] This virtual discussion is open to all -- but please register to receive the Zoom link prior to the event.

Sense of Self: The Islamic Contemporary (March 24, 2023 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/105043 105043-21810641@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 24, 2023 10:00am

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Spectrum Center

Registration not required!

Join the Jim Toy Community Center's OUTreach and the Outlaws at the University of Michigan for a free clinic dedicated to addressing the challenges of name changes for transgender and gender nonconforming people.

They will provide details on how to legally change your name and gender marker in the state of Michigan. Information on how to update your Social Security, Passport, Driver’s License, and Birth Certificate will also be available. Legal volunteers will be on-site after the presentation to answer questions and assist with forms. Finger-printing services will be available on site with no fee. If you would like to take advantage of the finger printing services, please bring a government-issued photo ID.

PLEASE NOTE: There will be an officer from the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office to offer fingerprinting at the event. This is a necessary step in the process for adults 22 or older, and providing the officer in this space skips the need to go to the Sheriff's Office directly and individually.

Sense of Self: The Islamic Contemporary (March 31, 2023 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/105043 105043-21810642@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 31, 2023 10:00am

Location:
Organized By: First Year Experience Programs

Give yourself the gift of a couple hours from the stresses of day-to-day life by joining Adventure Leadership for a BYOA event (which stands for Build Your Own Adventure) at the Adventure Education Center! Small teams will work together -- guided by an FYE facilitator -- to complete engaging outdoor activities and score points, all while exploring the environment. Create earth sculptures! Swing ropes! Solve puzzles with your team! This program generates lots of frame-worthy photo ops and action shots. Invite nature, physical activity, and time for facilitated reflection to make your weekend awesome. Please be sure to wear closed-toed shoes and/or bring boots to wear outdoors, and dress in layers in the event of less-than-desirable weather. It is a bit muddy on property, and we will be outside for the entirety of the event.

The program will take place at the Adventure Education Center in Ann Arbor. If you do not want to get yourself there, FYE will be providing a bus leaving from West Quad! Students who register will be sent more information about this.

*Registration on sessions is required*

*The location of the Adventure Education Center is "1120 N Dixboro Rd, Ann Arbor, MI 48105"*

*Please complete this Participation Consent and Release form by Friday, March 31st at 7pm and email it to "donopark@umich.edu", https://docs.google.com/document/d/1e8IYHXHp3_tMwp-C5Y3h5du-mII3xAe_rmZiz_2TujY/edit?usp=sharing*

On May 5th, 1991, people took to the streets of Washington D.C.’s Mount Pleasant neighborhood to protest the police shooting of Daniel Gomez, a young man from El Salvador. Through testimony, song, poetry, and street theatre, La Manplesa: An Uprising Remembered weaves together the collective memory of one of D.C.’s first barrios, and dives into the roots of the ‘91 rebellion. As people across the world take to the streets to demand an end to police brutality, the film honors the largely untold stories that have come before us, and explores how artists prompt us to remember what we still have to fight for.

This workshop focuses on the role of religious and spirituality identities as an important aspect of DEI work on campus. Participants in this workshop will develop an understanding the variety and complexity of religious, secular, and spiritual (R/S/S) identities on our campus; understand why support for religious pluralism and spiritual development is important on a public college campus; learn about key religious accommodations and resources and how to access them in their work to support faculty, staff, and students; and discover ways to get involved in DEI work around R/S/S identities.

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Understand the importance of religious, secular, and spiritual identity in faculty, staff, and students’ lives and in DEI work on our campus;

2. Identify the main religious groups on our campus and how their proportions differ among faculty, staff, and stud;ents; understand the limitations of the way we collect data about religious background;

3. Name the key religious accommodations and resources available to faculty, staff, and students; identify areas in which they can influence religious accommodations and in which there is more work to be done;

4. Understand what is acceptable and what is unacceptable regarding religious expression on a public university campus and barriers you may encounter around R/S/S DEI

5. Name three concrete steps they can take in within their sphere of influence to create greater equity and inclusion for students, faculty, and staff who hold minoritized religious identities

6. Name ways to get more involved in DEI work around R/S/S identities on campus

Did you know that every year Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn until sunset for an entire month? This month is known as Ramadan and the traditional meal the Muslims use to break their fast at the end of the day is called Iftar. On April 11, 2023, come to the Edward Said Multicultural Lounge in North Quad to an Iftar hosted by the Diversity Peer Educators! We will be serving a traditional dinner and providing educational resources about Muslim culture, beliefs, and traditions. We will also be in conversation with Dr. Matthew Schuman, the Islamic chaplain at the University of Michigan.
