Submit a Research Project for the 2021-2022 Academic Year: https://lsa.umich.edu/urop/research-mentors.html

UROP Research Mentors are faculty and post-doc researchers from across all U-M's 19 Schools and Colleges who provide undergraduate student researchers an opportunity to engage in research activities that help them learn about the pursuit of knowledge within an academic discipline. This early exposure to research fosters a valuable academic experience for students. Through this collaboration, students gain research skills and mentorship that lead to academic retention, a more positive undergraduate experience and paths to graduate school.

Organized By: Interdisciplinary Committee on Organizational Studies - ICOS

Research on topics of organizational science in health care settings for a variety of reasons has proliferated in recent years across both organization- and health-focused disciplines. Yet, questions abound about what we as organizational scholars know, what we have learned, and whether the research we are conducting is relevant. The first goal of this session is to take stock of this important domain by drawing together findings from two recent works: a critical history and analysis of the patient safety movement and an analysis of almost 700 articles published over the past decade in leading organizational science (OS) and health care (HC) journals. A second goal is to provide insight into promising avenues that could ultimately advance organizational science and health care with future research that is both rigorous and relevant.

This virtual panel, hosted by the U-M Center for World Performance Studies, seeks to explore issues surrounding musical repatriation, primarily of recordings from archive, to the communities from which they were initially recorded or collected. Drawing on their diverse experiences as ethnographers, curators and archivists, panelists will discuss ethical considerations of “return,” and strategies for providing reconnection and Indigenous control and access to cultural materials. The conversation will highlight questions of ownership of and access to musical heritage, and issues involving memory, identity, history, power, agency, research, scholarship, preservation, performance, distribution, legitimacy, commodification, curation, decoloniality, and sustainability.

Dr. Robin R.R. Gray (Ph.D., University of Massachusetts Amherst, 2015) is Ts’msyen and Mikisew Cree, and an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Toronto Mississauga. Prior to joining our faculty, Dr. Gray held a 2-year University of California President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship in the History Department at the University of California Santa Cruz. Her research centers primarily on the politics of Indigeneity in settler colonial contexts such as Canada, USA, New Zealand and Australia. As a socio-cultural anthropologist and Indigenous studies scholar, Dr. Gray employs critical ethnographic, community-based, Indigenous and intersectional methodologies in the study and presentation of knowledge, power, culture and society.

Dr. Frank Gunderson is Professor of Musicology at Florida State University. He received the B.A. degree from Evergreen State College (WA), and the M.A. in World Music and Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University (CT). Gunderson’s research and teaching interests include musical intersections with Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) and sonic repatriation, African history, Islam, musical labor, veterans’ issues, biographical approaches, refugee communities, and documentary film. Gunderson is currently General Editor (2018-2022) of the SEM academic journal *Ethnomusicology* and is co-founder and co-Editor-in-Chief (together with Benjamin Harbert) of the new SEM Journal of *Audiovisual Ethnomusicology*. He co-edited with Robert Lancefield and Bret Woods *The Oxford Handbook of Musical Repatriation* (OUP 2018).

Dr. Noel Lobley is Assistant Professor in the Department of Music at the University of Virginia. He is a sound curator, ethnomusicologist, and artist. At the core of his creative practice, he is committed to developing new and ethical ways to exhibit sound. His installations have been presented across South Africa, Europe, and the U.S. in spaces ranging from art galleries and festivals to rainforests, in schools and on the streets. In addition to his careers as a curator and academic, he also has worked as a DJ, in radio, and in the music industry for twenty years. Noel’s first monograph *Sound Fragments: from field recording to African Electronic Stories* is forthcoming (Wesleyan, Spring 2022).

Dr. Kelly Askew is Chair of Anthropology and the Niara Sudarkasa Collegiate Professor of Anthropology and Afroamerican & African Studies at the University of Michigan. She has worked for over three decades in Tanzania and Kenya. Her current research and documentary film projects span: poetic and performing arts, postsocialist politics, pastoralism and indigenous communities, energy access and property rights. She is the author of *Performing the Nation: Swahili Music and Cultural Politics in Tanzania* (Chicago, 2002) and co-editor of *African Postsocialisms* (with M. Pitcher, Edinburgh, 2006) and The Anthropology of Media (with R. Wilk, Blackwell, 2002), among numerous publications. She co-leads the “Music Time in Africa” project, working to digitize the Leo Sarkisian collection, and make it publicly accessible.

*If you require accommodation to participate in this event, please contact the Center for World Performance Studies, at 734-936-2777 or cwps.information@umich.edu. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.*

Over the years, the tech industry has made many promises to organizational customers -- for example, that its products would improve efficiency, reduce costs, and increase scale. More recently, the promises have extended to such things as improving teamwork and decision-making. While these promises have been realized in some contexts, they remain largely unmet in others. Is there a way to distinguish between realism and hype in computing? Technology's "Law of Amplification" is a simple idea that captures digital technology's impact. This talk will reveal how it explains a broad range of past and existing organizational phenomena, and how it suggests predictions for the future.

During this interactive event, we will unpack the 10 principles of Design Justice through collaborative activities. Led by Assistant Professor, University of Michigan alum, and Design Justice Network member Andrea Cardinal, attendees will also learn about the ways we can put Design Justice principles into work, what they can do at different levels to initiate community-based and equity-centered design & technological work, and how to elicit social change with their skills and backgrounds.

Collaborator, accomplice, artist, designer, & educator. Andrea Cardinal is an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Bowling Green State University, Principle of Tooth & Rag Design, Co-Director of Talking Dolls Studio in Detroit, Michigan. She earned a BFA in Graphic Design and BA in the History of Art from the University of Michigan and an MFA in 2D Design at Cranbrook Academy of Art. Her finest works to date are her two children.

WDI, U-M Poverty Solutions Hosts Inclusive Fintech Pioneer Collins (February 3, 2022 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/91854 91854-21684138@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, February 3, 2022 10:00am
Location:
Organized By: William Davidson Institute

Traditional surveys and questionnaires can be imprecise methods for understanding the needs and motivations of low-income and vulnerable populations. In a Feb. 17 virtual discussion, acclaimed author and entrepreneur Daryl Collins will explore how technology can help researchers, nonprofits and businesses engage and serve these communities around the world.

During the talk, Collins will share examples of how her company, Decodis, is using technology to collect and analyze qualitative data in a more scalable and lower-cost manner. Collins will share examples of collecting data using WhatsApp audio responses to understand changes in gender norms and assessing Google Play reviews of digital lending apps in India. In both examples, Collins will share how she and her team used Natural Language Processing (NLP) – a common market tool - to detect key topics and phrases to unpack the meaning of the responses. She’ll also share how she and her team analyzed speech signals (such as pitch, duration of responses and voice modulation) in the audio files to determine whether the respondent was engaged in their responses, when the respondent was unsure, and when the respondent gave them a “canned response” — i.e., telling the researchers what he/she thought the researchers wanted to hear.

The William Davidson Institute and the University of Michigan’s Poverty Solutions are co-sponsoring the talk, which begins at 5 p.m. is free and open to the public.

As a pioneer working at the intersection of finance and human vulnerability, Collins has built a broad portfolio of work with financial service providers, foundations, bilateral donors and governments. Collins’ work is grounded in a deep understanding of the financial lives of individuals. She is the author of the ground-breaking “Portfolios of the Poor” and creator of the Financial Diaries, a research tool used in over 10 countries, including South Africa, Kenya, Mozambique and Tanzania.

People living at or near poverty levels are less likely to speak their minds when responding to surveys and other efforts to collect data. This hesitancy is understandable, but it also creates a real challenge for researchers, enterprises and policymakers to better understand their needs, said Heather Esper, Director of WDI’s Performance Measurement & Improvement group.

“Daryl Collins is truly a pioneer in collecting and analyzing data to better understand the lives of low-income and vulnerable individuals at scale,” Esper said. “The qualitative methods she uses shed more light on what individuals are saying by accounting for how they say it.”

Collins recently established Decodis with a team of linguists and Natural Language Processing data scientists. Decodis seeks to advance scale and robustness in qualitative research techniques by providing tech-led consumer research methods that are insightful, scalable and low cost. The Decodis team is currently working on a range of projects across a breadth of countries, languages and sectors to explore new ways of both collecting and analyzing open-end response data.

Collins holds bachelor’s and master's degrees in economics from the London School of Economics and a Ph.D. from New York University. She spent the last decade as Managing Director and CEO of BFA, a niche financial inclusion consulting practice with offices in Boston, New York, Nairobi, Accra, New Delhi and Medellin.

Three clusters of meanings have defined what rules could be since antiquity: algorithms, laws, and paradigms. Two of these clusters are still very much with us: laws and rules still keep close company, and algorithms have become the prototypical rules. But the third cluster, centered on paradigms, is not only no longer synonymous with rules; it has come to be opposed to them – most famously in Thomas S. Kuhn’s The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (1962). Yet for over two thousand years, in both ancient and modern European languages, right through the Enlightenment, rules were paradigms – as well as laws and algorithms. This is the secret history of rules, reconstructed from examples of their pre-modern application.

The Museum Studies Program invites students enrolled in any graduate program at the University of Michigan to apply for the Fall 2022 cohort. This multidisciplinary graduate certificate program draws on ideas from the arts, humanities, natural and social sciences, and technology and provides countless opportunities to apply theories in a vast array of museums and cultural institutions on campus, in the region, nationally and around the world.
The MSP curriculum examines the role of museums in society as sites of memory, learning, research, cultural production, public scholarship, civic engagement, and entertainment. The 12-credit certificate program consists of the Museum Studies Seminar (Fall and Winter terms, 6 credits), approved electives (6 credits), and a funded internship. It prepares students for academic and professional careers in museums, heritage sites, arboretums, botanical gardens, zoos and other living collections, and universities.

Using AI to Study Problems of Innovation in Science and Business (February 4, 2022 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/91747 91747-21682702@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 4, 2022 1:30pm
Location: Ross School of Business
Organized By: Interdisciplinary Committee on Organizational Studies - ICOS

Innovation involves recombining past knowledge. The increasing rate at which scientific knowledge is expanding should bode well for innovation. Nevertheless, new problems related to the appraisal and valuation of new ideas and inventions are inhibiting innovation. One problem is that more scientific studies fail than pass replication tests, which has led to a deep skepticism of science, billions in economic losses, funding cuts, and a weakened job market in psychology. A second problem is that patent review has slowed while patent examiner disagreement and wrongful rejections of meritorious patent applications have risen. In this exploratory study, we investigate the potential of AI and machine learning to enhance the innovation evaluation process.
In study 1, we trained an artificial intelligence model to estimate a paper’s replicability using ground truth data on studies that had passed or failed manual replication tests, and then tested the model’s generalizability on an extensive set of out-of-sample studies. The model predicts replicability better than the base rate of reviewers and on part with prediction markets, the best present-day method for predicting replicability. We then used the model to conduct a discipline-wide census of replicability in Psychology. The analysis covers 14,129 papers, the near universe of all papers published in Psychology journals over a 20-year period in the six major subfields of Developmental, Social, Clinical, Cognitive, Organizational, and Personality psychology. We find replicability varies by subfield, research design methods, but not institutional prestige. Further, researchers’ past research records and social media strongly predict replicability; in particular, media attention predicts non-replication.
In study 2, we use new data on almost 4,000,000 U.S. patent applications, 2,000,000 EU patents, and 250,000 Canadian patents to test AI’s ability to identify patentable inventions and their future citation impact. We report three key findings. First, AI accurately predicts human experts’ decisions in spotting meritorious innovation at agreement levels of up to 95%, which is remarkable given the degree of variation and potential disagreement among individual patent examiners. Second, although hit patents disproportionately drive investments and innovation, current models and analysts have been unable to predict a patent’s future influence. We find that AI accurately predicts an invention’s future influence from application data, providing a new view of technological trajectories at the earliest time possible. Third, AI can reduce review process biases and misevaluations. Using applications that were mistakenly rejected by examiners but should have been accepted, AI model would made 47% fewer wrongful rejections.
In the case of both scientific papers and patents, AI appears to garner error-reducing information not from the application’s quantified data but from its descriptive free-text, which machines quantify better than humans. We discuss how these findings can improve innovation, scientific training, and performance.

Abstract:
Among Costa Rican hydrogeologists and water activists there is a longstanding struggle over the most appropriate metaphor to describe subterranean water. Veins (venas) have captured their imagination since at least colonial times when mining and other extractive projects dominated visual renderings of water. Plumes (plumas)have emerged more recently as hydrogeologists try to convey to the public the fragility and volatility of aquifers in danger of chemical contamination. Mantles (mantos) persist as figures that evoke the extended and enveloping character of water as a material substance. Measured against human bodies, human-made disasters, and human needs, these figurations that guide political decisions about harm and well-being. This paper examines the assumptions about collective life in Costa Rica that are written into these figures. I query how and where do these figures collide, and ask whose imagination is privileged in that process?

The only way to understand what it is to be human is to know what it is like to be not human. In this talk we will explore the minds of our closest relatives; bonobos and chimpanzees, and dogs – our closest friend. We will look at how these animals help us understand what makes us human, and how our minds came to be. We will arrive at the idea that it was friendliness that powerfully shaped both the bodies and minds of bonobos and dogs during their evolution. We will then consider if our own species evolved due to selection for friendliness. I will argue that comparing our friendly nature to other animals solves the paradox of human kindness and cruelty and points to the need for cross-group friendships to encourage a friendlier future.

WDI, U-M Poverty Solutions Hosts Inclusive Fintech Pioneer Collins (February 17, 2022 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/91854 91854-21683556@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, February 17, 2022 5:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location

The Ross community prides itself on using business as a function to create a more equitable and just society, and for over 20 years this program has served as a critical opportunity for graduate students to become involved in, and contribute to, local communities and causes. Each year, the Fellowship hosts a public forum in the form of a panel discussion with representatives from local nonprofit organizations. This year, the theme of the forum is “Stronger Together: How Nonprofits Can Collaborate.” We believe that collaboration between nonprofits will only become more instrumental in combating injustices across America. Join us for a panel discussion featuring four local nonprofit experts.

Things Are Not What They Seem: The Origins & Evolution of Intragroup Conflict (February 18, 2022 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/91806 91806-21690201@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 18, 2022 1:30pm
Location: Ross School of Business
Organized By: Interdisciplinary Committee on Organizational Studies - ICOS

Teams scholars have historically conceptualized and measured intragroup conflict at the team level. But emerging evidence suggests that perceptions of intragroup conflict are often not uniform, shared, or static. These findings suggest important questions about the microfoundations of intragroup conflict: Where does conflict within teams originate? And how does it evolve over time? We address these and other questions in three abductive studies. We consider four origination points—an individual, dyad, subgroup, or team—and three evolutionary trajectories—conflict continuity, contagion, and concentration. Study 1, a qualitative study of narrative accounts, and Study 2, a longitudinal social networks study of student teams, reveal that fewer than 30 percent of teams experience team-level conflict. Instead, conflict more commonly originates and persists at individual, dyadic, or subgroup levels. Study 2 further demonstrates that traditional psychometric intragroup conflict scales mask the existence of these various origins and trajectories of conflict. Study 3, a field study of manufacturing teams, reveals that individual and dyadic task conflict origins positively predict team performance, whereas traditional intragroup task conflict measures negatively predict team performance. The results raise serious concerns about current methods and theory in the team conflict literature and suggest that researchers must go beyond team-level conceptualizations of conflict.

Location: Power Center for the Performing Arts
Organized By: TEDxUofM

TEDxUofM is a university-wide initiative to galvanize the community for an event like no other; filled with inspiration, discovery, and excitement. Borrowing the template from the world-renowned TED conference, TEDxUofM aims to bring a TED-like experience to the University of Michigan. Our vision is to showcase the most fascinating thinkers and doers, the “leaders and best” in Michigan terms, for a stimulating day of presentations, discussions, entertainment, and art that will spark new ideas and opportunities across all disciplines. Our conference will feature 8 speakers, 3 performing groups, and interactive labs/activities for attendees!

Our theme for this year’s conference is SHATTERPROOF. Through a time of fragmentation and dissonance, individuals and communities have showcased an incredible ability to withstand adversity. Resilience is found in all of us despite the size of the challenge. We use our voices to empower each other. We use ideas to drive us forward. We refuse to crack under pressure. We are shatterproof. As we set the stage with this spirit, our goal is for attendees to discover what being shatterproof means to them.

Visit www.tedxuofm.com to get tickets to our Conference!

Hardship and Hard Work: Son Preference Attitudes among Highly Educated Urban Chinese Women
by Yun Zhou
Monday, February 21
12-1:10 pm ET via Zoom

Abstract:
Extensive research on son preference in China has predominantly focused on rural and rural-to-urban migrant populations. Son preference attitudes among other demographic groups have received little attention. Drawing on 70 in-depth interviews with highly educated urban Chinese women, I examine whether son preference attitudes persist among this previously under-explored group—and if yes, why. I discover a lasting preference for sons among women who otherwise support gender egalitarianism. I elucidate two distinct logics—the gendered hardship and hard work—that underpin this seeming paradox: Invoking their own experiences of gender inequality, these women articulate their son preference as a desire to shield their children from gendered hardship. They view raising daughters amidst pervasive gender discrimination as emotionally taxing hard work. I illustrate the nuanced reasoning—beyond the devaluation of girls—that underlies highly educated urban Chinese women’s son preference attitudes. I further demonstrate that despite the nuance, such reasoning ultimately does not disrupt entrenched patriarchal familial expectations that favour boys over girls and holds behavioural implications for second-birth outcomes.

Bio:
Yun Zhou is an Assistant Professor of Sociology and Chinese Studies at the University of Michigan. Trained as a social demographer, Zhou’s research examines social inequality and state-market-family relations through the lens of gender, marriage, and reproduction. Intersecting the studies of population and politics, Zhou's current project investigates the demographic, political, and gendered consequences of China's recent ending of the one-child policy. Zhou received her Ph.D. in Sociology from Harvard University in 2017. She completed her postdoctoral training (2017-2019) as a Postdoctoral Research Associate of Population Studies at the Population Studies and Training Center, Brown University.

Michigan Population Studies Center (PSC) Brown Bag seminars highlight recent research in population studies and serve as a focal point for building our research community.

Interdisciplinary Islamic Studies Seminar (IISS) is pleased to announce a lecture by Professor Knut Vikør (University of Bergen). Professor Vikør's field of specialization is the history of Islam. His research interests include North and West Africa in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries with a special focus on central Sahara, the history of Sufi brotherhoods, in particular the Sanusiyya, and the history of Islamic law. In all these fields, he explores the social impact and relevance of Islamic practice.

Selected publications:

*Between God and the Sultan: A History of Islamic Law* (London: Oxford University Press, 2005);

*Sufi and Scholar on the Desert Edge. Muhammad b. 'Ali al-Sanusi and his Brotherhood* (London/Evanston: Northwestern University Press 1995);

*The Maghreb since 1800: A Short History* (London: Hurst & Company, 2012);

*The Oasis of Salt. The History of Kawar, a Saharan Centre of Salt Production* (Bergen/London: University of Bergen, 1999)

Abstract

It was from the earliest times established that the formulation of Islamic legal rules was the work of the religious scholars since the Shari’a was God’s law, and “diversity of opinion is one of God’s blessings". But it was the state’s task to ensure the law was implemented, and for this purpose, the law must have a reasonably fixed and stable form. Thus, a selection of “preferred” or authoritative opinions came to be favored at each moment in time and place. With the establishment of the modern nation-states, the authority of law fell fully to the modern state. These two ways of authorizing practicable legal rules have come to be known as “canonization” for the pre-modern period, and “codification” for the laws established by state authority. In this seminar, we will look at the various methods of establishing authority for the rules that were to be practiced, and ask what continuities there may or not be between the two terms “canonization” and “codification”.

Moving health products from the research and development stage to the clinic is a long and costly process that involves many actors, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In these markets, global organizations such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria, and Gavi play a significant role in moving health products through the process. These organizations influence market behavior at the research and development, manufacturing, procurement and delivery stages with the hopes of increasing access to life saving health products to patients in LMICs. Their efforts have been effective. For example, over the last 20 years the number of deaths caused by AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria has been reduced by 46% in countries where Global Fund works. Gavi has helped immunize 760 million children in the last 21 years, preventing over 13 million deaths worldwide. These are significant achievements, but are there opportunities to better engage some of the other actors in this space, particularly those from the private sector? We will explore this idea through discussion with the panelists representing the Gates Foundation, the Global Fund and representing the Gates Foundation, the RBM Partnership to End Malaria, and The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB & Malaria.

The UROP Research Scholars Program is designed for students who want to expand on their first year UROP experience and participate in UROP for a second year at an advanced level. In this program, students build upon the knowledge gained in a first undergraduate research experience to further explore the connections between research, a liberal arts education, and communicating skills to advance their future professional goals. Students are expected to explore various written and oral possibilities for communicating their research process, identifying the limits set by the discipline and the opportunities that lie beyond.

Applications for the 2022-2023 academic year cohort open February 14th.
Priority Deadline for the applications is March 18th

UROP Research Mentors are faculty and post-doc researchers who provide undergraduate student researchers an opportunity to engage in research activities that help them learn about the pursuit of knowledge within an academic discipline. This early exposure to research fosters a valuable academic experience for students. Through this collaboration, students gain research skills and mentorship that lead to academic retention, a more positive undergraduate experience and paths to graduate school.

Join us by mentoring students participating in our summer research fellowships.
