The free, virtual social hour is open to people with aphasia and is a low-pressure way to practice communication skills and connect with others. Building confidence and staying social are some of the best things you can do for yourself and loved ones when aphasia is a part of your life!

Aphasia social hours will now occur twice a month, on every First and Third Thursday, from 1-2 pm (EST), via Zoom.

2022 Fall/Winter Dates
+ Sept. 1 and 15
+ Oct. 6 and 20
+ Nov. 3 and 17
+ Dec. 1 and 15

PLEASE NOTE: While all are welcome, the intent behind the social hours is to offer a place for people with aphasia to connect and practice their communication skills. While care partners are encouraged to assist the person with aphasia, we ask that care partners refrain from taking an active role in the conversation so people with aphasia have the time and space to connect.

Natural Language Processing Workshop Series (September 19, 2022 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/97509 97509-21794662@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, September 19, 2022 3:00pm
Location: West Hall
Organized By: Michigan Institute for Data Science

Written text contains a wealth of information that can be turned into research data to study almost every aspect of human behavior, human health and our society. However, converting text to usable data requires an understanding of standard techniques from the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP). MIDAS and the AI Lab are jointly organizing a monthly series of NLP workshops during the Fall 2022 semester. The first installment is on Sept. 19, and the second installment is on Oct. 10. Each session does not directly depend upon information from previous sessions.

In the first workshop of the series, we will provide a broad overview of NLP and introduce basic concepts used in NLP, including keyword counting, sentiment classification, and topic modeling. Additional topics include how NLP can be used, what the data look like, what (social science) questions could be answered using NLP, and more.

The second session, on Oct 10, is titled "What's in Text Data?"
Written text contains rich information about human knowledge, opinions, and communication styles, but how do we extract insight about all this from the data? In this second workshop in the series, we will first introduce Jupyter notebooks, a popular platform for performing data science research. Then we will discuss how to choose a dataset for your research question, extract your own dataset from social media sites like Reddit and Twitter, and convert the raw text data to a usable format. We will then explore several methods to extract information and gain insight from text data, including named entity recognition and sentiment analysis.

Ashwini Deo is a Professor in the Department of Linguistics at The University of Texas at Austin. She will present, "Coordinated on the context: Discourse salience, exclusivity, mirativity, precisification, and intensification in Marathi"

ABSTRACT
Several Indo-Aryan languages, including Bangla, Gujarati, Hindi, and Marathi contain a discourse clitic whose uses overlap with those of English particles like exclusives only/just, intensifiers really/totally, precisifiers right/exactly/absolutely, anaphoric indeed/that very, and scalar additive even without corresponding perfectly to any of them. In this talk, I offer an analysis of the varied and seemingly disparate uses of this particle, focusing on the Marathi variant -ts. I claim that =ts conventionally signals that interlocutors are in mutual agreement that the proposition denoted by the prejacent is uniquely salient among alternatives in the current question. That is, =ts conveys that the proposition expressed by the prejacent offers a schelling point (or focal point) for the interlocutors to coordinate on. Most effects associated with =ts are shown to arise as a consequence of pragmatic reasoning about the position of the prejacent with respect to the contextually given ordering on the current question. In addition to offering a unified analysis for Marathi =ts and its functional cognates in Indo-Aryan, this new perspective can open the door to a better understanding of why exclusivity, mirativity, precisification, and intensification might cluster together in languages. In closing, I consider the implications of =ts’s meaning for a crosslinguistic picture of the lexicalization of some discourse-managing functions.

Natural Language Processing Workshop Series (October 10, 2022 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/97509 97509-21794843@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, October 10, 2022 3:00pm

Watershed (October 23, 2022 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/93605 93605-21706336@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, October 23, 2022 11:00am
Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

Watershed brings recent work from sixteen contemporary artists to UMMA for an exhibition that immerses visitors in the interconnected histories, present lives, and imagined futures of the Great Lakes region.

Some of these artists give voice to the experiences of communities that have been marginalized, making personal and visceral the social, economic, and political relationships among people, water, and land. Others use water as part of their process—whether photography, painting, sculpture—to provoke reflection on its ineffable effects on our bodies, language, and lives. All demonstrate how art can contribute to and shape current dialogues on the critical problems confronting our region.

This exhibition will feature new commissions from those listed below as well as works by Dawoud Bey, Pope L, LaToya Ruby Fraizer, Cai Guo-Qiang, Doug Fogelson, Matthew Brandt, and Senghor Reid.

Lead support for this exhibition is provided by the U-M Office of the Provost, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Michigan Arts and Culture Council, Susan and Richard Gutow, and the U-M Institute for the Humanities. Additional generous support is provided by the U-M School for Environment and Sustainability, Graham Sustainability Institute, and the Department of English Language and Literature. Special thanks to Margaret Noodin and Michael Zimmerman, Jr. for translating the gallery texts into Anishinaabemowin.

TITLE
On the History and Current Form of Merge

ABSTRACT
This discussion explores the history, form, and function of the most fundamental operation of the narrow syntax, Merge. The question we'll focus on is this: What 'should' Merge do, what 'should' Merge not do; and, most importantly, why?

By way of background, we give a brief history of structure building devices, from PS rules (graph-theoretic and linear-order-encoding) to successive stages in the development of Merge--from its introduction in Bare Phrase Structure (Chomsky 1994/95) to its formulation in Problems of Projection (Chomsky 2013, 2015, see also Epstein, Kitahara, Seely 2015, Collins and Seely to appear)) and to its recent characterization (Chomsky 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021), Epstein, Kitahara, Seely (2018, 2020, 2022).

Next, we trace the "maximize minimal merge" program (Epstein, Kitahara, and Seely 2018, 2022): The idea is to maximize the effects of Merge while minimizing its form, positing internal to the narrow syntax as little as possible beyond simplest Merge, striving ultimately for the thesis “3rd Factor + Interfaces + Recursion = Language,” as initially articulated in Chomsky 2007.

With this background, our primary goal is to explore Chomsky's recent thinking on Merge, from a series of lectures and papers, and ultimately trace conclusions of a forthcoming paper “Merge” by N. Chomsky, R. Berwick, S. Fong, M.A.C. Huybregts, H. Kitahara, A. McInnerney, T.D. Seely, Y. Sugimoto, in R. Freidin (ed) Elements, Cambridge.

Chomsky’s recent work suggests that what we thought was simplest Merge (unifying external and internal merge) is in fact inexplicit in crucial respects, and a revision is proposed that reconceives Merge as an operation that applies to the workspace WS, thereby allowing the monitoring of computational resources. Explored are the 3rd
factor (non-linguistic) principles that constrain Merge, its empirical consequences, challenges, and prospects for future research.

TITLE
How the prosody in our hands and body can help us enhance second language pronunciation learning
Pilar Prieto (ICREA-Universitat Pompeu Fabra)

ABSTRACT
When we speak, we frequently use rhythmic hand gestures which are coordinated with prosodically prominent parts of speech (e.g., beat gestures). As most of the research on the benefits of gesture in the second language classroom has focused on the effects of representational gestures (e.g., for the acquisition of vocabulary), little is known about the potential beneficial effects of beats and other embodied prosodic movements on the learning of L2 pronunciation. In this talk I will discuss the results of several experiments carried out in our research group that deal with how beat gestures and other embodied rhythmic and melodic movements facilitate the learning of second language pronunciation. Experiments 1 and 2 will assess the potential benefits of observing and performing beat gestures on L2 pronunciation learning by intermediate Catalan learners of English. Experiments 3 and 4 will analyze the benefits of performing hand-clapping on L2 pronunciation learning at initial stages of L2 acquisition of French by Catalan and Chinese native speakers. Experiments 5 and 6 will assess the effects of the use of melodic and rhythmic hand movements on the learning of both suprasegmental and segmental information by English and French language learners. Widening the scope of this investigation, Experiment 7 will assess the boosting effects of an embodied music-based rhythmic and melodic training which does not involve speech in the foreign language for English pronunciation learning. Based on the positive findings from these experiments, I will discuss the results of a recent study testing the idea that embodied narrative-based natural classroom interventions have the potential to be used as strong scaffolding mechanisms for speech production. I will finally suggest that a more active, context-based multimodal approach to teaching pronunciation could be successfully applied to both language teaching and speech treatment contexts.

Location: 202 S. Thayer
Organized By: Institute for the Humanities

With the “Hear, Here” series, we aim to facilitate conversations around new research in the humanities. Faculty fellows at the Institute for the Humanities will discuss a part of their current project in a short talk followed by a Q & A session. Today: “Making Place for Greek Islam” with William Stroebel.

About the talk:
This talk will open a small window onto the history of Greek-Language Islam (Greek written in the Arabic alphabet by Greek-speaking Muslims of the Ottoman Empire). I try to make a place in literary history for this refugee literature, which has been uprooted from modern civilizational and national narratives in both Europe and the Middle East. What value can Greek-language Islam offer us today, amidst the ongoing border crises and Islamophobia in places like Greece, the U.S., and elsewhere?

About William Stroebel:
William Stroebel is a 2022-23 Helmut F. Stern Faculty Fellow at the Institute for the Humanities and assistant professor, classical studies and comparative literature.

Frontiers of Justice: Jews & Muslims in Christian Iberian legislation, 11-12th centuries (November 29, 2022 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/101335 101335-21801231@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, November 29, 2022 4:00pm
Location: Tisch Hall
Organized By: Romance Languages & Literatures

When appraising the position of Jews and Muslims in premodern European societies – and, therefore, the extent to which non-Christians were tolerated, persecuted, and ‘racialised’ in the Latin West – historians habitually turn to legislation as a point of reference. But what social, political, and intellectual work, exactly, did legal texts do in framing religious difference? This talk answers this question through the example of medieval Iberia – where inter-religious encounters were particularly intense, and especially visible in the extant legal records.

The talk highlights the need to better understand the tension between legal norms and practices in discussing how Christian legislation framed religious minorities. To do so, it focuses on the negotiation of violent transgressions against Jews and Muslims in legal franchises drafted during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The talk explores how the regulation of non-Christian violence served as an instrument of political legitimation. It then unfolds how such regulations were resisted, reformed, and accepted at the local level. These texts reflected not simply norms on Christian-Muslim-Jewish interaction, but norms as they were being contested.

TITLE
Expectations modulate retrieval interference during ellipsis resolution

ABSTRACT
Memory operations during language comprehension are subject to interference: retrieval is harder when items are linguistically similar to each other. We test how such interference effects might be modulated by linguistic expectations. Theories differ in how these factors might interact; we consider three possibilities: (i) predictability determines the need for retrieval, (ii) predictability affects cue-preference during retrieval, or (iii) noisy memory representations affect next-word predictions. We first demonstrate that expectations for a target word modulate retrieval interference in Mandarin noun-phrase ellipsis in an electroencephalography (EEG) experiment. This result obtains in globally ungrammatical sentences – termed “facilitatory interference.” Such a pattern is inconsistent with theories that focus only on the need for retrieval. To tease apart cue-preferences from noisy-memory representations, we operationalize the latter using a Transformer neural network language model. Confronting that model with our stimuli does reveal an interference effect, consistent with prior work, but does not show an interaction between interference and predictability which contrasts with the EEG results. Together, these data are most consistent with the hypothesis that the predictability of target items affects cue-preferences during retrieval.

TITLE
An Intersectional Approach to Black Queer Language & Identity Performance

ABSTRACT
This talk furthers our understanding of how Black queer people use language to perform and create their identities. The intersection of Blackness and queerness is one that requires us to examine the ways race, gender, and sexual orientation influence a person’s lived experience. Following an intersectional approach, I argue that a Black queer person does not experience the world as either a Black person or a queer person, but uniquely as a Black queer person. To understand the role of language in Black queer life and experience, it is necessary to challenge strict boundaries between linguistic categories and social identities, while also considering the ways linguistic performance may be used as a tool of power and resistance.

As a student at U-M, you have so many different experiences that have brought you here, such as courses, internships, volunteer programs, part-time jobs, hobbies and projects you do for fun, plus so much more.“Translating” means being able to strategically explain those experiences in such a way that a specific audience ― like a recruiter, grad school admission board, or any one for that matter ― can understand and find relevant to them.

This workshop will focus on translating your experience as a language major, identifying and communicating skills and knowledge that employers, graduate programs, and other professionals find valuable. Together, we will reflect on experiences that have been important to you ― whether they are practical learning moments or transformative life lessons ― and develop strategies for telling others so that you can achieve your professional goals.

CREES Noon Lecture. Playing with Words, Talking about War (February 8, 2023 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/102687 102687-21804984@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, February 8, 2023 12:00pm
Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies

Ainsley Morse's book, *Word Play: Experimental Poetry & Soviet Children’s Literature*, traces the long history of the relationship between experimental aesthetics and Soviet children’s books. From the earliest days of the Soviet project, children’s literature was taken unusually seriously—its quality and subject matter were issues of grave political significance. Yet, it was often written and illustrated by experimental writers and artists who found the childlike aesthetic congenial to their experiments in primitivism, minimalism, and other avant‑garde trends. In the more repressive environment of the 1930s, experimental aesthetics were largely relegated to unofficial and underground literature, but unofficial writers continued to author children’s books. By the end of the Soviet period, there was an unspoken consensus that children’s literature was perhaps the best part of the Soviet literary canon; meanwhile, the childlike aesthetic frequently migrated into unpublished unofficial poetry as well, offering new forms and forms of poetic subjectivity for underground authors.

In this talk, Morse will introduce the book and some of its protagonists, while also indulging in a discussion of their work as a specifically post-war phenomenon. How might the same childlike lexical and formal elements, abundant humor, and childlike lyric speakers, which served as markers of unofficial aesthetics, additionally participate in articulating wartime and post-war experience (likewise excluded from official narratives)?

Ainsley Morse teaches in the Russian and comparative literature departments at Dartmouth College and is a translator of Russian and former Yugoslav literatures. Her research focuses on the literature and culture of the post-war Soviet period, particularly unofficial or "underground" poetry, as well as the avant-garde and children's literature. She translates Soviet and post-Soviet Russophone literature and theory, as well as former Yugoslav and contemporary B/C/S literature and, most recently, Ukrainian modernist and contemporary poetry.

This lecture will be presented in person in 555 Weiser Hall and on Zoom. Webinar registration required at http://myumi.ch/Ek1we

Whether you are writing a research article, class assignment, conference abstract or dissertation, the words, grammatical structures, and organizational patterns you use all signal whether your text sounds “academic.” We will look at features of academic style, and how these differ across a range of writing that undergraduate and graduate students do. In this workshop we will work on how to make effective stylistic choices for the types of writing you are doing and the academic identity you wish to convey to your readers in various writing contexts. Bring a text you are currently working on for analysis. Please come prepared to participate actively in small group discussions.

Cydney K. Seigerman is a Ph.D. candidate in the Integrative Conservation & Anthropology program at the University of Georgia, where they work with Dr. Don Nelson and are a member of the Human Environmental Change Lab (HECL). Cydney is an NSF Graduate Research Fellow and a research scholar at the Cearense Meteorological and Water Resources Foundation (Funceme) in Ceará, Brazil.

Their dissertation work explores how socionatural (i.e., interrelated sociopolitical, environmental, and technological) processes shape and are shaped by the lived experience of water insecurity in Ceará, northeast Brazil.

Before pursuing their Ph.D., Cydney studied chemistry and Spanish language and literature at the University of Michigan, graduating from the Residential College and Honors College. They then relocated to Madrid, Spain, where they served as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant, studied acting at the theater school La Lavandería, and ran competitively.

Ann Arbor's First Orthodox Priest (February 20, 2023 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/104727 104727-21810022@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, February 20, 2023 7:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Classical Studies

Who was the first Orthodox Priest of Ann Arbor, and what can we learn from his life story today? This talk will follow the twists and turns in the life of Father Agathangelos, the first Greek-Orthodox priest to serve the spiritual needs of Ann Arbor nearly a century ago, and reflect on its broader meanings for Greek Orthodoxy in America.

Father Agathangelos was born and raised in Ottoman Cappadocia (central Anatolia) at the end of the nineteenth century, but his life was upended with the Greco-Turkish Population Exchange of 1923 (whose centennial we honor this year). The Exchange was at the time an unprecedented act of ethnic cleansing: The Republic of Turkey stripped nearly one and a half million indigenous Anatolian Christians of their citizenship and uprooted them to Greece, which in turn stripped Greek citizenship from nearly half a million indigenous Muslims of Greece and uprooted them to Turkey. This Compulsory Exchange upended the lives of nearly two million souls and set an international precedent for partition and forced population movements in later decades.

This talk will follow the refugee life and migrations of Father Agathangelos -- who, in addition to being a priest, was also a poet, a novelist, and an iconographer -- through his artwork and the traces he left behind. His first and only fluent language was Turkish, which he wrote in the Greek alphabet, known as "Karamanlidika Turkish." His poetry and his art reflect the rich cultural confluence of Anatolia before the Exchange, and it was this culture that he carried with him into refugeehood and his later migration to the United States. What can his life tell us about the enumenical breadth and cultural riches of Greek Orthodoxy in America? You are all warmly invited to join in this lecture and to share your own perspectives in an open-forum Q&A afterward.

William Stroebel is an Assistant Professor of Modern Greek and Comparative Literature in the departments of Classical Studies and Comparative Literature at the University of Michigan. His research focuses on recovering the refugee literatures displaced by the Greco-Turkish Population Exchange of 1923. The lecture will be accompanied with refreshments and a reception after the Q&A.

Title: Una persona tiene cada idea: Scope ambiguity intuitions by Spanish/English bilinguals

This research examines the understudied question of how Spanish/English bilinguals interpret ambiguous sentences. In some languages like English and Spanish, sentences with two expressions specifying quantity, or quantifiers (for instance, ‘every’, ‘some’, and ‘a’), are syntactically ambiguous, meaning their structure permits two possible interpretations (see example 1). Although the construction is ambiguous, research suggests that speakers of these languages tend to prefer one interpretation that is more instinctive. Furthermore, some studies suggest that bilinguals may have a different intuitions of the sentence interpretation for each of their languages (Lee, 2009; Scontras et al., 2017). Importantly, language dominance, language proficiency and order of acquisition have been suggested as possible predictors of whether bilinguals do have a divergence between their two languages.

(1) A person bought every book

Interpretation 1: Say there are 10 books and all were bought by a single person

Interpretation 2: Say there are 10 books and each was bought by a different person

To date, research has not investigated how Spanish/English bilinguals interpret syntactically ambiguous sentences of quantifier scope. The current study therefore advances this research and also asks whether Spanish/English bilinguals show divergence in the two languages. Furthermore, this work attempts to determine whether a given factor (language proficiency, order of acquisition, etc) better predicts divergence in the two languages, if divergence arises. To answer these questions, an experimental study is being conducted with 60 Mexican-Spanish/English heritage bilinguals. Participants complete three tasks: Judging whether a sentence is true or false to determine how instinctive the two possible interpretations are, (2) a proficiency test in both languages, and (3) a language background questionnaire to collect linguistic information of the participants. Pending complete data collection, t-test and correlation analyses will be used to examine the results.

This can be particularly true with people in a position of authority, such as a faculty advisor, department chair, work supervisor, or future employer. In this workshop, we will practice skills and strategies to effectively interact with powerful people, including turn-taking strategies, active listening, and sources for sample conversations. We will consider how to seem friendly and confident at a job interview or competent and insightful in a research group meeting. Come ready to practice with one another and to identify effective ways to practice on your own.

These visuals can take many forms, including graphs, tables, charts, photos, and embedded videos. In this workshop, you will learn how to select appropriate visuals and integrate them with spoken and written text in order to best communicate your scholarship to different audiences. We will analyze presentations from a variety of disciplines in order to identify what makes them effective. Please bring a presentation you are currently working on or have presented in the past and be prepared to participate in small group discussions.

@ 7:30 PM: L'immensità by Emanuele Crialese (2022)
Rome, 1970s: Clara and Felice have just moved into a new apartment. Their marriage is over: they don't love each other anymore, but they can't let go. It is the children who keep them together, on whom Clara pours all her desire for freedom. Adriana, the eldest, has just turned 12 and is the most attentive witness of Clara's moods and the growing tensions between her parents. Adriana rejects her name, her identity, and wants to convince everyone that she is a boy. Her obstinacy of hers brings the already fragile family balance to breaking point. While the children wait for a sign to guide them, whether it's a voice from above or a song on TV, everything around and inside them changes.
Cast: Penelope Cruz, Luana Giuliani, Vincenzo Amato, Patrizio Francioni, Maria Chiara Goretti, Penelope Nieto Conti, Alvia Reale, India Santella, Mariangela Granelli, Valentina Cenni, Elena Arvigo, Carlo Gallo, Laura Nardi, Rita De Donato, Filippo Pucillo, Aurora Quattrocchi.

The United Nations declared 2022-2032 as the International Decade of Indigenous Languages. In 2014, Diego became the first indigenous career diplomat that was appointed at the Permanent Mission to the United Nations. From 2014 to 2019, he was the facilitator of the United Nations Resolution on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Under his leadership, the United Nations started two important actions for the indigenous peoples: the process of enhancing their participation at the United Nations and the Proclamation of 2019 as the International Year of Indigenous Languages. Diego is a 2019 Yale Maurice R. Greenberg World Fellow and 2021 Draper Hills Summer Fellow from Stanford University. He holds a master’s degree in International Relations and Diplomacy from Instituto de Altos Estudios Nacionales, and a BA in International Relations from Universidad San Francisco de Quito, Ecuador. In addition, he is a PHD candidate in Advanced Studies in Human Rights at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid.

Kristen Carpenter is Council Tree Professor of Law and Director of the American Indian Law Program at the University of Colorado Law School. Professor Carpenter served as chair and member of the United Nations Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP) from 2017-2021. While serving at the United Nations, Professor Carpenter worked on human rights issues regarding Indigenous Peoples throughout the world. With colleagues at the Native American Rights Fund, Carpenter is now co-lead on The Implementation Project an effort to advance the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in the United States. She also serves as a Justice of the Shawnee Tribe Supreme Court.

Aleksei Tsykarev serves as chair of the Center for Support of Indigenous Peoples and Civic Diplomacy «Young Karelia», an NGO recognized with special consultative status by the United Nations Economic and Social Council. A lifetime activist for the rights of indigenous peoples in Russia, Tsykarev previously led the International Youth Association of Finno-Ugric Peoples, and has served as an independent expert in several United Nations capacities. Tsykarev is a former Member and Chairperson-Rapporteur of the United Nations Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, a subsidiary body of the UN Human Rights Council. He also served on the International Steering Committee for the UN’s 2019 International Year of Indigenous Languages, led by UNESCO. Tsykarev holds a Master of Linguistics from Petrozavodsk State University, in Russia, and his academic publications focus on indigenous peoples’ rights, particularly in the areas of language and culture. In Spring 2019, he was a Visiting Scholar at the University of Colorado in the United States. Most recently, Tsykarev was appointed by the United Nations Economic and Social Council to serve as Member of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues for a three-year term starting on 1 January, 2020. Tsykarev advises global institutions, including the World Bank, as well as think tanks and scientific organizations, regarding indigenous peoples’ rights. He has been active in a range of indigenous organizations, and has participated in regional and international forums, including the World Conference on Indigenous Issues, World Conference on Youth, the World Congress of Finno-Ugric Peoples, and the Global Indigenous Youth Caucus. Tsykarev has coordinated a number of international projects in the sphere of human rights, culture, and civic diplomacy, and serves on advisory councils to government ministries and offices.
