In the standard story, the suffrage crusade began in Seneca Falls in 1848 and ended with the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920. But this overwhelmingly white women's movement did not win the vote for most black women. Securing their rights required a movement of their own. Historian Martha S. Jones’ 2020 book “Vanguard” shows how African American women defied both racism and sexism to fight for the ballot, and wielded political power to secure the equality and dignity of all persons. From the earliest days of the republic to the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act and beyond, black women—Maria Stewart, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Fannie Lou Hamer, and more—were the vanguard of women's rights, calling on America to realize its best ideals.

New Deal policy and the racialization of homeownership
by Jacob William Faber, New York University

Bio:
Jacob William Faber is an Associate Professor at New York University's Robert F. Wagner School of Public Service and holds a joint appointment in NYU's Sociology Department. His research and teaching focuses on spatial inequality. He leverages observational and experimental methods to study the mechanisms responsible for sorting individuals across space and how the distribution of people by race and class interacts with political, social, and ecological systems to create and sustain economic disparities. While there is a rich literature exploring the geography of opportunity, there remain many unsettled questions about the causes of segregation and its effects on the residents of urban ghettos, wealthy suburbs, and the diverse set of places in between.

Michigan Population Studies Center (PSC) Brown Bag seminars highlight recent research in population studies and serve as a focal point for building our research community.

Join us for a frank discussion about the law and ethics of health research that relies on artificial intelligence and machine learning, and the impact it can have on treatment and perpetuation of health disparities. We’ll discuss legal and ethical issues related to biased algorithms, liability, regulation, data ownership, and responsible use of health data.

Incorporating perspectives from a computational social scientist (Abigail Jacobs, Assistant Professor of Complex Systems and Information, LSA) and a legal scholar with expertise in the responsible use of big data (Nicholson Price, Professor of Law), this webinar will provoke thought and provide important information to help clinicians and data scientists continue their research while also working to improve care and reduce health disparities.

The event will be moderated by Vicki Ellingrod, PharmD, Associate Research Dean and Professor of Pharmacy.

This webinar is the fourth in the Precision Health educational series: "Demystifying the Data, Processes, and Tools that Are Changing Clinical Care."

This virtual panel, hosted by the U-M Center for World Performance Studies, seeks to explore issues surrounding musical repatriation, primarily of recordings from archive, to the communities from which they were initially recorded or collected. Drawing on their diverse experiences as ethnographers, curators and archivists, panelists will discuss ethical considerations of “return,” and strategies for providing reconnection and Indigenous control and access to cultural materials. The conversation will highlight questions of ownership of and access to musical heritage, and issues involving memory, identity, history, power, agency, research, scholarship, preservation, performance, distribution, legitimacy, commodification, curation, decoloniality, and sustainability.

Dr. Robin R.R. Gray (Ph.D., University of Massachusetts Amherst, 2015) is Ts’msyen and Mikisew Cree, and an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Toronto Mississauga. Prior to joining our faculty, Dr. Gray held a 2-year University of California President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship in the History Department at the University of California Santa Cruz. Her research centers primarily on the politics of Indigeneity in settler colonial contexts such as Canada, USA, New Zealand and Australia. As a socio-cultural anthropologist and Indigenous studies scholar, Dr. Gray employs critical ethnographic, community-based, Indigenous and intersectional methodologies in the study and presentation of knowledge, power, culture and society.

Dr. Frank Gunderson is Professor of Musicology at Florida State University. He received the B.A. degree from Evergreen State College (WA), and the M.A. in World Music and Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from Wesleyan University (CT). Gunderson’s research and teaching interests include musical intersections with Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) and sonic repatriation, African history, Islam, musical labor, veterans’ issues, biographical approaches, refugee communities, and documentary film. Gunderson is currently General Editor (2018-2022) of the SEM academic journal *Ethnomusicology* and is co-founder and co-Editor-in-Chief (together with Benjamin Harbert) of the new SEM Journal of *Audiovisual Ethnomusicology*. He co-edited with Robert Lancefield and Bret Woods *The Oxford Handbook of Musical Repatriation* (OUP 2018).

Dr. Noel Lobley is Assistant Professor in the Department of Music at the University of Virginia. He is a sound curator, ethnomusicologist, and artist. At the core of his creative practice, he is committed to developing new and ethical ways to exhibit sound. His installations have been presented across South Africa, Europe, and the U.S. in spaces ranging from art galleries and festivals to rainforests, in schools and on the streets. In addition to his careers as a curator and academic, he also has worked as a DJ, in radio, and in the music industry for twenty years. Noel’s first monograph *Sound Fragments: from field recording to African Electronic Stories* is forthcoming (Wesleyan, Spring 2022).

Dr. Kelly Askew is Chair of Anthropology and the Niara Sudarkasa Collegiate Professor of Anthropology and Afroamerican & African Studies at the University of Michigan. She has worked for over three decades in Tanzania and Kenya. Her current research and documentary film projects span: poetic and performing arts, postsocialist politics, pastoralism and indigenous communities, energy access and property rights. She is the author of *Performing the Nation: Swahili Music and Cultural Politics in Tanzania* (Chicago, 2002) and co-editor of *African Postsocialisms* (with M. Pitcher, Edinburgh, 2006) and The Anthropology of Media (with R. Wilk, Blackwell, 2002), among numerous publications. She co-leads the “Music Time in Africa” project, working to digitize the Leo Sarkisian collection, and make it publicly accessible.

Thresholds: Regulating Risk and Water Contamination in Diné Communities
Teresa Montoya, University of Chicago

Monday, Mar. 7, The Open Talks will be held noon to 1pm, and the Grad Workshops will be held 1 to 3pm. All parts via Zoom.

Abstract:
On July 16, 1979, one of the uranium mill tailings disposal ponds at the United Nuclear Corporation facility near Church Rock, NM failed. The ruptured mill earth dam released approximately 1100 tons of radioactive solid mill waste and 95 million gallons of acidic mine water into the streams and watersheds of nearby Diné (Navajo) communities. This disaster remains the largest singular release of radioactive material in U.S. history. In the spill’s aftermath—decades later and several miles downstream—I have worked alongside Diné grassroots coalitions on the Navajo Nation in their efforts to confront various forms of water contamination from this toxic disaster. Drawing upon ethnographic and archival material, I explore the various regulatory frameworks through which radioactive exposure is legible and by extension, the legal and political avenues that are made possible or denied. Through these activities, I analyze discourses of risk management, regulatory jurisdiction, and chronic exposure by several state agencies and public officials in their response to community concerns of unsafe water. In doing so, I theorize the arbitrary thresholds of toxicity within larger racialized debates over tribal sovereignty, public health disparity, and environmental justice for Diné communities today.

Good Bureaucrats and God: Ethical Labor in an Irrigation Bureaucracy
Maira Hayat, Notre Dame University

Monday, Mar. 14 via Zoom: Open Talks will be held noon to 1pm, and the Grad Workshops will be held 1 to 3pm.

Abstract:
Bureaucracies tend to feature in political and social theory as sites of structural violence, patriarchy, sovereign excess, or foils to ethical enterprise. This talk, however, argues for the unique importance of studying bureaucracy as a site of ethical laboring. Tracing the specific, surprising and sophisticated ways in which God participates in everyday bureaucratic practice in an Irrigation Department in Pakistan, it shows how bureaucrats’ attempts to be “good Muslims” can produce “good bureaucrats.” The yield is a deeper understanding of how state officials experience and navigate the pull of the ‘private’ in everyday ‘public’ waterswork, and how this in turn determines the service they provide. In foregrounding ethical laboring, the talk brings together the anthropology of bureaucracy, ethics, and secularity towards newer configurations.

The Name Change Clinic (March 30, 2022 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/93063 93063-21700226@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, March 30, 2022 5:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Spectrum Center

Register: https://bit.ly/LGBTQ-UM-Events

Join JTCC's OUTreach with Outlaws at the University of Michigan for a free clinic dedicated to addressing the challenges of name changes for transgender and gender nonconforming people.
Event Location: The clinic will take place on the 4th Floor at the Ann Arbor District Library's downtown location (343 S. Fifth Ave, Ann Arbor, MI 48104). A detailed wayfinding guide will be available at https://bit.ly/SCeventnav.

We will provide details on how to legally change your name and gender marker in the state of Michigan. Information on how to update your Social Security, Passport, Driver’s License, and Birth Certificate will also be available. Legal volunteers will be on-site after the presentation to answer questions and assist with forms.

*PLEASE NOTE:* There will be an officer from the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office to offer fingerprinting at the event. This is a necessary step in the process for adults 22 or older, and providing the officer in this space skips the need to go to the Sheriff's Office directly and individually.

Geoff Eley’s work has fundamentally reframed key questions in the field of German history and lastingly shaped the discipline of history. His work spans centuries and reaches across oceans. The questions he has asked are both pointed and of universal relevance. His contributions witnessed and shaped the many “turns” the discipline of history itself has made. His list of publications spans more pages than the average reading list for preliminary examinations in the field of German history. If one counts the presentations he has given at workshops and conferences one would assume he has lived three lives. As the organizers of this symposium in his honor, we suggest that the work of Geoff Eley deliberately evades “capture.” Instead of pounding a signpost into the ground and leaving his mark, Geoff has built bridges between fields and made waves within them, touching innumerable lives and minds in the process. To ride the waves and travel across these bridges by bringing together some of the many scholars, colleagues, students, and friends that have learned with and from Geoff is the purpose of this symposium.

No Straight Lines celebrates Geoff Eley’s impressive career, the breadth, range and importance of his scholarship, his spirit as a teacher, mentor and colleague, and his life-long commitment to justice, within and beyond the academy. Starting out as a scholar of German nationalism and the German political right and reframing the “peculiarities” of that history as an emerging young scholar, Geoff Eley’s work bore the imprint of comparative history, of thinking with concepts and theories rather than applying them, of pushing against boundaries that confine “acceptable” ways of thinking about the past, which he is currently putting into practice again by writing a comprehensive history of 20th Century Europe. Throughout his career, he has traced and critically reflected on how historical thinking has itself changed as a result of historical processes. No Straight Lines seeks to take stock of and celebrate the extent to which Geoff Eley’s work has in fact been indispensable to the intellectual shifts he has so skillfully traced and succinctly explained.

Besides celebrating the breadth and impact of Geoff Eley’s scholarship, No Straight Lines seeks to remind us all of the many ways in which his work was never just theoretical but was always connected with and energized by thinkers, writers, scholars, and students, and in turn, supported and touched so many of them in lasting ways. In this regard the Saturday dinner is as crucial a part of this symposium, as is the discussion of Eley’s scholarly footprint. That footprint was never purely abstract; nor was it only intellectual. Rather it continues to invigorate the many friendships and collaborations he has built and sustained over his career. This symposium brings us together to honor the experience of learning from and with Geoff Eley.

About Medha:

Medha is currently a Norman A. Sugarman Business Law Scholar at Case Western Reserve Law School and also a chef. Medha is from NYC and Fort Gratiot, MI. Alum Connection with Toni Newell: From Film to Law to Nonprofits — Find out how an LSA degree can take you anywhere. (September 16, 2022 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/98084 98084-21795573@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, September 16, 2022 3:00pm

Toni Newell (‘99) is living proof that a U-M liberal arts and sciences degree will take you anywhere. She credits that it was her LSA degree that taught her how to think, and not what to think, a skill that has led to her success across a variety of fields. She attended Michigan to study Film and Video Studies and worked in television shortly after graduating. While thriving in the television industry, Toni realized she could do more than the Silver Screen and made the decision to go back to law school. After graduating, she accepted a position at Varnum LLP where she gained experience working in a variety of corporate matters, including mergers and acquisitions, contracting, and banking compliance. Despite a successful career in law, she again flipped the ‘the script’ of her professional career in early 2020 when she pivoted her direction towards the nonprofit sector by joining Catholic Charities. From film to law to nonprofits, Toni highlights the flexibility that an LSA degree can offer, and is now coming back to campus to share her hard-earned wisdom and life lessons with current LSA students.

About Toni:

Toni currently serves as Interim Executive Director of Catholic Charities’ Diocese of Kalamazoo. Toni is a native of Michigan, growing up in the small town of Hopkins. She graduated from the University of Michigan in December 1999, receiving a B.A., with distinction, in Film and Video Studies (now known as Film, Television, and Media). While at Michigan, she participated in the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program. Prior to attending law school, Toni worked at WXMI-Fox 17 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, first as a master control operator and then as an account executive. In May 2001, Toni moved to Washington, DC, to work in the legislative office of Senator Debbie Stabenow. In August 2002, Toni began law school at Notre Dame Law School, graduating in May 2005. She had internships both summers of law school, working for Legal Aid of Western Michigan and the Barry County Prosecuting Attorney. Upon graduation, Toni worked as a law clerk for the Honorable George Corsiglia in the Allegan County Circuit Court. She then worked as a staff attorney for Legal Aid of Western Michigan prior to her time at Varnum where she worked her way up to partner. Toni left Varnum in 2020 to make the transition to Catholic Charities where she currently works.

You should attend this session if you are:
-A U-M undergraduate LSA student
-Interested in pursuing law school, nonprofit work, or careers in film & television
-Eager to learn how to pursue varying interests throughout your career

What you’ll gain by attending:
-Make a connection with a successful LSA alum ready to support you
-Get ideas for how to build a career when your path is not traditional
-Learn how to build your networking skills

Hon. J. Michael Luttig served for nearly fifteen years as a judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Among other positions, he has also served as Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Office of Legal Counsel and as General Counsel to The Boeing Company. The open letter circulated by Vice President Pence on January 6, 2021, quoted Judge Luttig’s assertion that “[t]he only responsibility and power of the Vice President under the Constitution is to faithfully count the Electoral College votes as they have been cast,” and not “to alter in any way the votes that have been cast, either by rejecting certain votes or otherwise.” On June 16, 2022, Judge Luttig testified before the House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack, to the effect that President Trump and his allies had “instigated” a war on democracy. He was also one of the authors of LOST NOT STOLEN: The Conservative Case that Trump Lost and Biden Won the 2020 Presidential Election, issued in July 2022.

DIRT (October 9, 2022 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/99226 99226-21797744@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, October 9, 2022 6:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Department of Film, Television, and Media

The ongoing debate over undocumented immigrants to the U.S. is effectively dramatized in Nancy Savoca’s 2004 Showtime film DIRT. The life of Savoca’s heroine, Dolores, a Salvadorian maid living in Queens, is disrupted once again when her boss of nine years, Mrs. Ortega, fires her when she decides to run for Congress on an anti-immigration platform.

Savoca showcases an entire underclass of immigrants and portrays their personal struggles in a respectful yet often comedic manner that creates great empathy beyond the sensationalist newspaper headlines. VARIETY called the film “an audience grabber as tightly condensed and emotionally resonant as its title” and added that the “film zings along with an energy, determination and spirit that are anything but depressing.”

Directed and co-written by FTVM's John H. Mitchell Visiting Professor in Media Entertainment, Nancy Savoca, who will be in attendance for an introduction and Q & A.

Navigating a Post-Roe America: Insights, lessons, and reflections after a decade leading in the reproductive justice movement (October 20, 2022 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/96937 96937-21793585@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, October 20, 2022 4:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Institute for Research on Women and Gender

**THIS EVENT WILL NOW ONLY BE PRESENTED ON ZOOM WEBINAR**

In the wake of the overturning of Roe v. Wade, Americans everywhere are strategizing and mobilizing to protest and challenge the abolishment of the right to abortion care. These actions are necessary and important, though it is often forgotten that even when Roe was in place, abortion care for many women still was not adequate.

This talk will examine the realities of reproductive health care for women before the end of Roe, where we are now, in the post-Roe era, and what strategies we need to employ going forward in anticipation of the erosion of even more rights.

About the speaker:
Yamani Yansá Hernandez has been working at the vanguard of the sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice movements for the last decade. From 2011-2015, she was the Executive Director of the Illinois Caucus for Adolescent Health (ICAH), a reproductive justice organization focusing on adolescent sexual health, rights, and identities. Most recently, Ms. Hernandez was the first Black Executive Director of the National Network of Abortion Funds (NNAF), overseeing the membership, technical assistance, and advocacy for over 80 grassroots organizations that fund abortion and build the cultural and political power to ensure that the legal right to abortion remains a reality. Under her leadership, the staff increased from 12 to 60; the budget grew from $2 million to $20 million; and the organization cultivated an approach to their work based on an ethos of justice and care. Ms. Hernandez holds a B.S. from Cornell University and an M. Arch. from the University of Washington, and is currently writing a memoir.

Cosponsorship provided by the CEW+ Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund.

Representative Rashida Tlaib is an American politician and lawyer serving as the U.S. representative for Michigan’s 13th congressional district since 2019. The district includes the western half of Detroit, along with several of its western suburbs and much of the Downriver area. A member of the Democratic Party, Tlaib represented the 6th and 12th districts of the Michigan House of Representatives before her election to Congress. After serving, she worked at Sugar Law Center, a Detroit nonprofit that provides free legal representation for workers. In Congress, Tlaib is tackling one of the most significant drivers of poverty in our country – medical debt. With eight million Americans pushed into poverty due to medical expenses in 2018, Tlaib introduced The Consumer Protection for Medical Debt Collections Act (H.R. 2537), which would prohibit the collection of medical debt for two years, as well as debt from “medically necessary” procedures being included on one’s credit report. It passed the House in 2021 as part of a Comprehensive Debt Collection Act.

The talks, which are free and open to the public, will also be livestreamed on YouTube. U-M students can participate in the series as a one-credit course - look for it as SWK 503 section 001.

The Coming Interjurisdictional Abortion Wars (November 16, 2022 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/101157 101157-21800886@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, November 16, 2022 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Center for Bioethics and Social Sciences in Medicine (CBSSM)

This talk will examine the paradigm shift that is occurring now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade. Returning abortion law to the states will spawn perplexing legal conflicts across state borders and between states and the federal government. This talk emphasizes how these issues intersect with innovations in the delivery of abortion, which can now occur entirely online and transcend state boundaries. Judges and scholars, and most recently the Supreme Court, have long claimed that abortion law will become simpler if Roe is overturned. But in reality, overturning Roe will create a novel world of complex, interjurisdictional legal conflicts over abortion. Some states will pass laws creating civil or criminal liability for out-of-state abortion travel while others will pass laws insulating their providers from out-of-state prosecutions. The federal government will also intervene, attempting to use federal laws to preempt state bans and federal land to shelter abortion services. Ultimately, once the constitutional protection for pre-viability abortion disappears, the impending battles over abortion access will transport the half-century war over Roe into a new arena, one that will make abortion jurisprudence more complex than ever before. This talk will offer insights into this fast-approaching transformation of abortion rights, law, and access, looking ahead to creative strategies to promote abortion access in a country without a constitutional abortion right.

Location: Off Campus Location

More than 127,000 Japanese Americans were forcibly relocated and incarcerated in concentration camps in remote areas of the seven western U.S. states during World War II. Their crime? Ancestry. Almost two-thirds of the interns were Nisei, or U.S.-born. Even World War I veterans of Japanese descent were forcibly evacuated. Families were made at gunpoint to leave their homes, businesses, schools, their lives for spartan, communal tarpaper barracks in inhospitable regions. This powerful documentary premiered last May on PBS (available for streaming here). This discussion is open to all. Please register to receive the Zoom link prior to this session.
