It will demonstrate the dynamics, tensions, and complexities in the imperial governance and judicial administration of Qing China (1644-1911).

Li Chen is currently Associate Professor of Chinese History and Law at the Department of History and the Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto in Canada. He received his PhD in Chinese history from Columbia University and JD from the University of Illinois (UIUC). His research focuses on the intersections of law, politics, and culture in both Chinese and international history since the early 16th century. Besides other publications including two edited volumes and a forthcoming Chinese book, his first English monograph, "Chinese Law in Imperial Eyes: Sovereignty, Justice, and Transcultural Politics" (Columbia University Press, 2016), received the honorable mention for the Peter Gonville Stein Book Prize of the American Society for Legal History in 2017 and received the Joseph Levenson Book Prize for Chinese studies from the Association for Asian Studies in 2018. He has since been working on several book projects on late imperial Chinese legal culture and judicial practices.

Over the last five decades the City of Detroit has felt the crisis of mass incarceration first-hand and most acutely. Historian Heather Ann Thompson will discuss the origins of this crisis nationally and locally, its lived impact on city residents as well as on the city itself. From this history, she argues, we can better understand not only why this is the civil and human rights crisis of the 21st century, but what it will take to undo it.

*Humanize the Numbers* presents the perspectives of men in Michigan prisons.

The prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height, weight, etc. In the process, their humanity is denied.

This exhibit reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. They share their stories with the world outside. By doing so, those in prison reclaim their humanity.

Proudly presented by Prison Creative Arts Project, MI Radio, and The Guild of Artists & Artisans

The goal of *In And On Our Own Terms* is for each artist to tell a story from their own experience that would not typically be part of the broader narrative about mass incarceration.

The goal is not to define any artist by the experience of having been incarcerated, but rather to amplify a story that only that artist can tell—a story that is important to the artist to tell, and an opportunity to use the medium of theatre to share it with the community.

July 21 – 3 PM
Ann Arbor Stage on Main (353 S. Main St. Ann Arbor, MI 48104)

August 19 – 7 PM

WCEE Lecture. Closer to Michigan or Madrid? Reflections on Ireland’s Unique Geopolitical Position (September 6, 2023 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/108971 108971-21820664@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, September 6, 2023 4:00pm
Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia

For more than two decades, Irish politicians, economists and legal scholars have commented on whether Ireland is “closer to Boston than Berlin” in its orientation. The U.S. and Europe are often presented as offering competing visions of prosperity in liberal democracies, with different understandings of the role of government.

Ireland has a unique position (and not only in geographical terms) sitting between these two worldviews. Ireland has a close economic relationship with the U.S. Ireland’s culture and legal system has often drawn on American examples. However, Ireland is also a Member State of the European Union, is committed to the project of European economic integration and is bound by laws passed by its institutions.

This question of Ireland’s relationship to the US and Europe merits further consideration in light of more recent developments on both sides of the Atlantic. This lecture will consider how Ireland combines ideas and insights from both systems, drawing on the wisdom of both Boston and Berlin, both Michigan and Madrid. It will examine the pattern of legal, cultural and political links between Ireland, the U.S. and Europe. It will also emphasize the role that these ties have played in nurturing Ireland’s economic development and success.

Rossa Fanning was appointed as Attorney General of Ireland on 17 December 2022. In that role, he attends Cabinet as the legal adviser to the Government and the chief law officer of the State. Prior to his appointment as Attorney General, he was a Senior Counsel in private practice at the Irish Bar with a varied caseload spanning commercial law, public law and judicial review, professional negligence, product liability, defamation, and privacy law. He graduated from University College Dublin with a First Class Honours BCL degree in 1997. He was awarded the Swift McNeill Memorial Prize, a Postgraduate Research Scholarship by UCD, and was called to the Irish Bar in 1999 after graduating from King’s Inns in the first place as the John Brooke Scholar. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and a University Fellowship to pursue an LL.M. at the University of Michigan, where he graduated in 2000.

This event will be presented in person in 1010 Weiser Hall and on Zoom. Webinar registration is required at https://myumi.ch/AWDqj

ABOUT THE SERIES

This four-part lecture series offers an ethnographic counternarrative to the never-ending U.S. Drug Wars that are justified by our profound disdain for dependency. Roberts juxtaposes this disdain with what she learned from her working-class neighbors in Mexico City. In their neighborhoods, vices are dependencies that isolate, while addictions are dependencies that connect. Neither state is shameful.

Could praising rather than pathologizing addiction reduce the staggering violence and racist incarcerations of the Drug Wars? And might more of us survive if we stopped shaming ourselves for our dependencies?

ABOUT PROFESSOR ROBERTS

Elizabeth F.S. Roberts is a professor of anthropology at the University of Michigan, who investigates scientific and public health knowledge production and its embodied effects in Latin America and the United States. She currently collaborates with engineers and environmental health scientists in the United States and Mexico as part of two ongoing team-based projects in Mexico City that she directs: “Mexican Exposures: A Bioethnographic Approach to Health and Inequality” and “Neighborhood Environments as Socio-Techno-bio Systems: Water Quality, Public Trust, and Health in Mexico City” (NESTSMX). In these projects, she and her team trace the looping social, economic, biological, and technical processes that shape everyday life, health, and inequality in working class neighborhoods. One of the key aims of Professor Roberts’ current work is the development of bioethnography, a method that combines social and life sciences approaches in order to make better knowledge about health and inequality. Dr. Roberts’ earlier research focused on assisted reproduction in the United States and Ecuador, reproductive governance in Latin America, and transnational medical migrations. She is the author of the book "God’s Laboratory: Assisted Reproduction in the Andes" (Univ. of California Press 2012) and is currently finishing her book manuscript on addiction called "In Praise of Addiction: Devotion and Defiance in a Damaged World."

Modernizing Regulatory Review (September 19, 2023 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/110565 110565-21825098@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, September 19, 2023 12:00pm
Location: Jeffries Hall
Organized By: Michigan Law Environmental and Energy Law Program

Please join us for the first Environmental & Energy Law Program lunch talk of the academic year. Richard Revesz, the administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, will deliver a lecture entitled "Modernizing Regulatory Review."

This event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be served.

On April 6, 2023, the Biden Administration took two actions to modernize regulatory review. First, the President signed an executive order that will focus federal agency and Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA) time and resources where they can have the greatest positive effect and bring more voices into the regulatory process. And second, OIRA issued proposed revisions to its government-wide guidance on regulatory analysis, Circular A-4, to help agencies better account for the full range of benefits and costs of their regulatory actions. This talk will particularly focus on Circular A-4, including proposed revisions to guidance on discounting, geographic scope of analysis, and distributional analysis.

Richard Revesz, the administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, is one of the nation’s leading voices in the fields of environmental and regulatory law and policy. He is also the AnBryce Professor of Law (on leave) and dean emeritus at the New York University School of Law. Revesz has published ten books and around 80 articles in major law reviews and journals advocating for protective and rational climate change and environmental policies, and examining the institutional contexts in which regulatory policy is made.

Overview: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming every aspect of our society and our lives. However, just like any emerging technology, AI’s impact varies greatly for different demographic groups, in different geographic regions, and is shaped by social conventions, culture, religion, economic realities, among many other factors. We invite everyone who is interested in understanding the impact of AI to join Marina Alsahawneh and Merve Hickok for a discussion of the impact of AI on women in the US and the Middle East. They will discuss gender biases in AI algorithms, opportunities and gender inequity in the AI-enabled workforce, and cyber-based violence against women. They will discuss how these intersect with the political, social, cultural, economic and religious features of different geographic regions.

Speakers:
Marina Alsahawneh, Gender and Inclusion Officer at Jordan Open Source Association

Merve Hickok, Responsible Data & AI Advisor, Michigan Institute for Data Science

Moderator:
Jing Liu, Executive Director, Michigan Institute for Data Science

K-12 Educators in the Crosshairs (November 15, 2023 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/114735 114735-21833397@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, November 15, 2023 5:00pm
Location: School of Education
Organized By: Humility Colloquium

How do we equip K-12 educators to survive devastating attacks on the culture war frontlines? K-12 public educators Matthew Hawn (Tennessee high school social studies teacher) and Elissa Malespina (New Jersey high school librarian) were targeted for having conversations about white privilege and racial equity and justice in a contemporary issues class and for ensuring students’ access to LGBTQ+ and racially diverse books in the school library.

Hawn and Malespina were fired from their jobs, appeared in national headlines, and (in Hawn's case) faced state discipline. During the event, they will share the realities of being under attack and offer advice on creative, sustainable strategies for educators, pre-service educators, and allies to prepare and protect themselves and to fight back collaboratively.

Registration for in-person attendance is suggested, though not required.

Abortion in Jewish and Islamic Law (January 30, 2024 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/115689 115689-21835383@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, January 30, 2024 4:00pm

The Jewish and Islamic legal traditions provide diverse, nuanced opinions on the legality and morality of abortion. Despite the historical contexts of these opinions, they remain salient to the current legal debate in the United States. The range of opinions includes strict limitations on abortion, circumstantial legality, and general permissibility. Scholars in both traditions debated the issue over extended periods of time (millennia in both instances), creating sophisticated bodies of jurisprudence on abortion.

Although scholars disagreed over the permissibility of abortion, they recognized the legitimacy of differing opinions. Comparatively, the American political and legal debates on abortion have little tolerance for diversity of opinion and have become increasingly polarized. In this presentation, Professor Benhalim will provide examples of sophisticated abortion jurisprudence from both traditions that recognize and accommodate a wide range of answers to the legal and ethical questions abortion presents.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Information and Technology Services (ITS)

Dr. Alessandro Acquisti, Trustees Professor of Information Technology and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University's Heinz College, and the co-director of the CMU Center for Behavioral Decision Research (CBDR), will deliver a presentation on the economics of privacy in the context of augmenting economic arguments with non-economic considerations in order to address the broad concept of privacy.

Dr. Acquisti will discuss how the economics of privacy could expand its horizons and relevance both by considering economic dimensions and research questions that have so far received limited attention, and by accounting for the broader scholarship on privacy coming from other disciplines. As a complement to the contributions of other fields, rather than a substitute for them, the economics of privacy may keep thriving and remain a useful tool for debate and policy making.

Dr. Andrea Forte, Professor of Information and Dean of the University of Michigan School of Information, will deliver opening remarks.

Dr. Florian Schaub, Associate Professor of Information, School of Information, and Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, College of Engineering, will facilitate a panel discussion including Dr. Nazanin Andalibi, U-M Assistant Professor of Information, School of Information and Assistant Professor of Digital Studies Institute, College of LSA and Dr. Kirsten Martin, William P. and Hazel B. White Professor of Technology Ethics and is Professor of IT, Analytics, and Operations in the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame, after the presentation.

The event is free and open to the public.

Annual Thomas R. Trautmann Honorary Lecture | The Exemption that Proves the Rule: Reading Law Between the Lines of South Asian Foundation Charters (March 15, 2024 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/114971 114971-21833881@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 15, 2024 4:00pm
Location: Michigan League
Organized By: Center for South Asian Studies

This talk presents examples of how medieval South Asian inscriptions, though created to address quite particular circumstances and to serve immediate purposes, can be analyzed to disclose otherwise unrecorded laws and legal principles that had general validity at the time of their inscribing. It will focus on foundation charters: grant decrees that confer on the beneficiary property rights that can include tax exemption and various other immunities and privileges, including a degree of juridical autonomy. By carving out exemptions to otherwise applicable rules and norms, such charters allow us to reconstruct some of what is implicit: the laws generally enforced by royal and other civil authorities. Furthermore, they tell us some important things about the relationship between religion and state.

Timothy Lubin is the Jessie Ball duPont Professor of Religion, Adjunct Professor of Law, and Head of the Law, Justice and Society program at Washington and Lee University. With degrees from Columbia University (BA, and PhD in the study of religion) and Harvard University (MTS), he taught earlier at Harvard and the University of Virginia. He has published widely on shifts in Brahmanical doctrine and ritual in ancient and medieval South Asia, the propagation of Dharmaśāstra (sacred law) and juridical norms reflected in inscriptions, and how these were appropriated in diverse regions including Nepal and Southeast Asia, where they inflected and were in turn transformed by local traditions. This work informs his contributions to the comparative study of premodern law.

28th Annual Exhibition of Artists in Michigan Prisons (March 19, 2024 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/115481 115481-21834895@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 19, 2024 5:00pm
Location: Duderstadt Center
Organized By: Prison Creative Arts Project, The

The *28th Annual Exhibition of Artists in Michigan Prisons* (March 19 - April 2, 2024) showcases the hard work and talents of artists incarcerated in Michigan prisons.

The work is by men and women from all 25 state prisons in both the upper and the lower peninsulas: 24 men’s prisons and 1 women’s prison.

This year there are hundreds of works in two and three dimensions, including portraits, tattoo imagery, landscapes, fantasy, and wildlife as well as images about incarceration and visions that are entirely new.

The artwork you see at the exhibit is a testament to the resilience of artists and the life-giving power of art under the most difficult of circumstances–incarceration, isolation, and unimaginable loss. It is an important reminder of the connections that sustain us all, in the free world and behind the walls.

We invite you to enjoy the work and, if you like, make a purchase. All proceeds, minus necessary taxes and fees, go directly to the artists.

The exhibition opens March 19th:
5:00 PM Gallery/sales open
5:30 PM Reception & light refreshments
6:30 PM Celebration program begins
*Free accessible shuttle service available on opening night*
*4:30 - 8:30 PM, running every half-hour*
*Loops to the exhibit from the Plymouth Rd. Park & Ride (3700 Plymouth Rd., right off of US-23)*

March 20th to April 1st, gallery hours for the exhibit are:
Sunday–Monday: 12:00 PM–6:00 PM
Tuesday–Saturday: 10:00 AM–7:00 PM

April 2nd gallery is open until 5:00 PM. Art Pick-Up begins at 5:00 PM

Join the Prison Creative Arts Project and A Brighter Way for an Art of Relational Advocacy Collaborative Conference and community networking fair.
This is an opportunity for cross-departmental dialogue, learning, growth, and collaborations in the fields of "justice"-involved advocacy. Effective systems-change advocacy requires the development of authentic relationships to engage in productive conversations with the communities we support, allies, detractors, decision-makers, and the public. Our goal is to answer the questions of how to effectively partner with others in order to maximize the impact of advocacy work.
The community networking fair is comprised of different system-impacted advocacy organizations with unique mission focus.
Whether you're practicing in the field or new to the work, the Art of Relational Advocacy Collaborative Conference offers the space to hold open and honest community conversations.

*"With Love, From Inside"* is an original play crafted by independent study theatre students and formerly incarcerated performers participating in the Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP). This production grew out of the students’ sadness that so many people in the free world will never get to know the extraordinary individuals who live inside the walls. This play vividly recounts stories that incarcerated PCAP participants wanted to share with audiences outside prisons.

*"With Love, From Inside”* blurs the boundaries between incarcerated and free people, exploring the shared joys and struggles that all of us face. The play furthers the continuum of PCAP’s weekly workshops for incarcerated theatre makers, in which university volunteers carry stories and life experiences from the free world into prisons. In this production, the performers do the reverse and bring the joys, sorrows, triumphs, and struggles of incarcerated people to free world audiences. In doing so, the performers widen the sphere of influence that incarcerated change makers have on the minds and hearts of others.

The performance is FREE and open to the public.
*Free accessible shuttle service available the day of the performance from 10:30 AM-5:00 PM, running every half-hour*
*Loops to the performance from the Plymouth Rd. Park & Ride (3700 Plymouth Rd., right off of US-23)*

My talk explores the relationship between custom and empire by connecting elite strategies for managing difference in medieval Iberia’s multi-confessional and multi-jurisdictional society to Spanish imperial strategies for governing an ethnically diverse and socially stratified Indigenous population in sixteenth-century colonial Mexico. While highlighting transatlantic connections, I point to custom’s distinct uses and outcomes in the context of colonial governance, especially the ways in which the concept of Indigenous custom reproduced Spanish notions of Native difference and inferiority and legitimized Spanish claims to Native labor. In doing so, I challenge long-held assumptions in the field of ethnohistory that Indigenous custom implied continuity with the pre-Hispanic past and was therefore antithetical to the Spanish imperial project. Through Native engagement with Spanish courts, Native and Spanish litigants and court officials adapted Indigenous custom – especially related to property and labor – to Spanish law and imperial objectives.
