Fluids are constantly mixing in our everyday lives. Some examples are oil and vinegar or coffee and cream. While we often don't think too much about how these fluids mix, they can have profound consequences in material ejecta in the Universe, fusion energy, and at your local pub. This talk will give a fundamental description of fluid mixing, discuss examples found in nature and engineering, and describe the effects mixing can have.

This talk will be live in ROOMS 170 & 182 Weiser Hall. You can also watch the talk/Q&A, live, on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCLXmkQUwlg

Please join us in-person for a seminar highlighting environmental research. Marc Weisskopf's research interests mostly come from his background in neurobiology. He is interested in how environmental factors affect the nervous system, as well as the epidemiology of neurologic disorders. Current areas of his work include how environmental exposures relate to:
* Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)
* Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
* Mental health
* Cognitive function/Alzheimer’s disease (AD)
* Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
Some examples of his current work include exploring how exposure to toxicants (e.g., lead, manganese, and air pollution) affect cognitive function and psychiatric symptoms; how air pollution and other toxicants relate to autism spectrum disorder (ASD); and how toxicant exposures like formaldehyde and lead relate to the development of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In addition, he has a large study in Israel and Denmark to explore the relationship of currently used medications to ALS. He is also very interested in issues of epidemiological methods and causal inferences as they relate to his work.

For in-person, refreshments served at 5:30 pm and the Program is 6:00-8:00 pm. In addition to Ms. Patterson, the event includes a Detroit Community Panel, moderated by Laprisha Berry Daniels (Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice):

The disproportionate impacts of disasters for communities of color have been documented repeatedly for both natural and human-caused disasters. In Michigan:
* More than 500,000 Michigan residents live within one mile of a facility storing large amounts of extremely hazardous chemicals;
* Those residents are disproportionately Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) and confront daily risks of spills, explosions, and other environmental disasters at the facilities, as well as from the transport of chemicals to and from them through their communities;
* Children of color are more than two times as likely as white children in Michigan to live in the shadow of facilities housing hazardous substances.

This event, organized by Detroit community leaders with support from local academic institutions, will:
* Discuss why emergency preparedness and response is an environmental and climate justice issue;
* Describe gaps and challenges in Detroit’s emergency preparedness and response, from and environmental and climate justice perspective;
* Share recommendations for improving emergency preparedness and response for environmental and climate justice communities.

University of Minnesota associate professor Chris Faulk, PhD, studies functional genomics in the department of animal science.

Dr. Faulk's Lab focus is on Epigenetics, Aging, Evolution, and Environmental Science. Dr. Faulk's lab statement, "My research is multi-scale with studies at the molecular genetic level in multiple organisms and human populations. I use computational methods to predict changes to the epigenome caused aging, dietary interventions, and environmental toxicants. I focus on both gene promoters and repetitive elements. My research models, the mouse and human, are primarily impacted by dietary shifts in nutrient availability and quantity simultaneously with toxicant exposure. My data analysis leverages massively parallel sequencing with comparative genomics to reveal regions evolutionarily selected for environmental plasticity."
