Distributed Decision-making in Disrupted Industrial Environments Using a Multi-agent Framework (May 8, 2023 9:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/107813 107813-21817096@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, May 8, 2023 9:30am
Location: Ford Robotics Building
Organized By: Michigan Robotics

The modern industrial environment is becoming more complex and dynamic, due to customized and shifting market demands, highly connected businesses, and frequently upgraded technologies. In such environments, varying uncertainties and disruptions could occur and highly impact the performance of the manufacturing factories and supply chain networks. Conventional centralized decision-making approaches handle disruptions by re-optimizing across the entire system regardless of disruption type and scale, which require significant computational efforts, especially for complex and large-scale systems. Therefore, to stay competitive, industry enterprises need to develop a dynamic and flexible decision-making method that enables an agile and resilient response to these unexpected disruptions in industrial environments.

Enabled by current Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques, multi-agent control has been proposed to conduct distributed decision-making to provide an agile response to disruptions. A multi-agent system consists of various autonomous agents, which are cyber representations of their associated physical objects and have their own knowledge and goals. Agents communicate and interact with each other to make high-level decisions for their associated physical objects. In different industrial environments, agents could represent different system entities, such as the products and machines in manufacturing systems, or suppliers and customers in supply chains. However, most existing industrial multi-agent systems require prior knowledge of disruptions and predetermined rules and strategies to generate responses, which makes it difficult to handle unexpected disruptions.

Aiming to improve the agility and resiliency of industrial systems, this dissertation develops a model-based multi-agent framework to address risk management within an agile and resilient response to various unexpected industrial disruptions. The proposed multi-agent framework comprises model-based agents, heuristic-based communication, and optimization-based decision-making. The model-based agent architecture enables agents to update their knowledge and local environments dynamically. When agents need to make decisions, they utilize their knowledge as heuristics to instruct their communication strategies. Then based on their knowledge and communication information, agents can identify new actions by solving risk-aware optimizations to respond to unexpected disruptions dynamically. The proposed framework is tested in a simulated manufacturing environment and a supply chain instance, showcasing the improved flexibility, agility, and resiliency of the industrial systems.

To conclude, this dissertation pushes the fields of distributed decision-making for industrial systems closer to satisfying the requirements of modern industry: flexibility, agility, and resiliency, especially for manufacturing systems and supply chain networks. Enterprises could apply this framework to compute a resilient recovery plan to address a disruption quickly to minimize the negative effects. In addition, this dissertation contributes to standardizing the design of system-level decision-making using a multi-agent framework. The proposed methodology to design a multi-agent framework is transferable to other complex systems, such as multi-robot systems and autonomous vehicle teams, that consist of multiple intelligent entities.

PREACT: Motion Sickness Alleviation in Autonomous Vehicles via Preemptive Interventions — CCAT Research Review (May 9, 2023 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/101400 101400-21803710@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, May 9, 2023 1:00pm
Location: Transportation Research Institute
Organized By: Center for Connected and Automated Transportation

While autonomous vehicles (AVs) promise a transportation future with several benefits, a high incidence of motion sickness among passengers remains a major impediment to the widespread adoption of this promising technology.

Motion sickness in a moving vehicle is the consequence of frequent acceleration and resulting inertial forces associated with driving actions such as speeding, braking, and turning. In a traditional vehicle, the driver anticipates the inertial consequences of their own driving actions, and accordingly makes subtle preemptive corrections. The passenger ends ups passively reacting to the inertial forces, which leads to a far greater incidence of motion sickness. In a future world of AVs, every occupant will be a passive passenger, resulting in a greater likelihood and severity of motion sickness.

In this talk, Professor Awtar will present the development and experimental validation of a novel motion sickness mitigation technology, PREACT. The key idea behind the PREACT technology is to employ predictive algorithms that anticipate impending inertial events associated with driving and accordingly makes preemptive corrections via mechatronic hardware such as tip/tilt active seats, active restraints, and passenger stimuli before the inertial events happen. Instead of reacting to an inertial event that can produce motion sickness, the PREACT system “pre-acts” ahead of time to avert motion sickness before it even happens.

Mentoring From a Blank Slate: A Challenge for Multidisciplinarity (September 21, 2023 2:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/112726 112726-21829468@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, September 21, 2023 2:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Engineering Education Research

This seminar is Hybrid (Presentation Room 1180, Duderstadt Center and via Zoom).

Abstract: Science and engineering are increasingly multidisciplinary. Many researchers encounter career challenges when adopting methods from fields outside their formal training. For example, faculty who shift disciplines need to acquire new skills while fulfilling their mentoring responsibilities to students who join them in the new field. We used collaborative autoethnography to study a tripartite mentoring relationship between an experienced engineering education researcher and two novice education researchers who have backgrounds in engineering—a biomedical engineering faculty member and graduate student. Using data from written reflections and interviews, we explored the role of instrumental and psychosocial supports in our mentoring relationship. We noted how elements of cognitive apprenticeship such as scaffolding and gradual fading of instrumental supports helped novices learn qualitative research skills that differed drastically from their biomedical engineering research expertise. While our mentoring relationship was overall very positive, it has included many moments of miscommunication and misunderstanding. We draw on Lent and Lopez’s idea of relation-inferred self-efficacy to explain some of these missed opportunities for communication and understanding. Our initial mentoring model failed to consider how challenging it is for mentees to make the paradigm shift from technical engineering to social science research and how that would affect a faculty member’s ability to mentor students in a new field. Our experiences have implications for expanding research capacity because they raise practical and conceptual issues for experienced and novice researchers to consider as they form mentoring relationships.

MICDE / ME seminar Olivier Desjardins: Multi-scale modeling of topology change in multiphase flow simulations (October 2, 2023 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/112154 112154-21828520@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, October 2, 2023 4:00pm
Location: Francois-Xavier Bagnoud Building
Organized By: Michigan Institute for Computational Discovery and Engineering

Liquid atomization and spray formation are ubiquitous processes in nature as well as engineered system. Predicting droplet size distributions from first principle simulations presents a fantastic challenge due to the wide range of scales involved in topology change. In this talk, we present new developments to the geometric volume of fluid method that enable the tracking of sub-grid scale interfacial features. By reconstructing the interface with multiple planar surfaces or with paraboloid surfaces, we show that ligaments and sheets can be represented accurately independently of mesh resolution while preserving exact conservation, good computational efficiency, and easy integration with finite-volume-based flow solvers. A consequence of such strategies is that lack of mesh resolution no longer induces topology change, which then needs to be reintroduced explicitly using physics-based models. We discuss various flavors of such models in the context of the break-up of thin liquid films, a common feature in aerodynamic liquid atomization.

Bio: Prof. Desjardins' research focuses on large-scale numerical modeling of turbulent reacting multiphase flows with industrial application. Using world-class parallel computers, his group develops numerical methods and models to investigate the multi-scale and multi-physics fluid mechanics problems that arise in a range of engineering devices, such as combustors or biomass reactors.

High-fidelity computational techniques such as large-eddy simulations and direct numerical simulations are at the heart of Dr. Desjardins' research. By enabling the exploration of complex non-linear flow physics from first principles, these techniques have the potential to guide the development of highly optimized energy and propulsion systems.

Using Partially Synthetic Frames to Evaluate Alternative Sample Designs for Estimating a Rare Business Characteristic

Katherine Jenny Thompson, U.S. Census Bureau
Hang Joon Kim (University of Cincinnati)
Stephen Kaputa (U.S. Census Bureau)

In the “traditional'” finite population sampling framework, the sample designer has a complete list (frame) of eligible units with classification information and auxiliary variables related to surveyed characteristics. In our setting, the frame auxiliary variables are weakly related to the survey characteristic, which is not present for most units. Hence, using frame auxiliary variables to assess survey design efficacy can be misleading. Instead, we propose generating multiple partially synthetic frames, modeling characteristic values for each unit on the frame, then drawing repeated samples from each synthetic frame using the candidate sample design(s) to assess finite sample performance for each design within and between the synthetic frames. Focusing on establishment survey data, we illustrate our proposed approach on a subset of industries surveyed annually by the Business Enterprise Research and Development Survey.

Katherine Jenny Thompson is the Senior Mathematical Statistician in the Economic Directorate of the Census Bureau. Jenny holds a masters of science degree in Applied Statistics from the George Washington University and an bachelor or arts degree in Mathematics from Oberlin College. She is an American Statistical Association (ASA) Fellow, an elected member of the International Statistics Institute, and the Vice President Elect of the ASA. She is the Survey Statistics Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Survey Statistics and Methodology and an Associate Editor for the Journal of Official Statistics. She has published papers on a variety of topics related to complex surveys in several journals, including the Journal of Official Statistics, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society (Series A), Survey Methodology, Annals of Applied Statistics, International Statistical Review, Journal of Survey Sampling and Methodology, and Public Opinion Quarterly.

Artist Talk and Reception (October 4, 2023 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/110764 110764-21825498@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, October 4, 2023 4:00pm
Location: Lane Hall
Organized By: Institute for Research on Women and Gender

Join us in the Lane Hall Exhibit Space (first floor) on Wednesday 10/4 to celebrate Sarah Buckius’ innovative exhibition !!!techn010ffspring!!! Refreshments, community, and conversation will be available starting at 4pm. At 5pm the artist will give a talk on the exhibition, its origins, and her process in Lane Hall 2239. There will be time for Q&A.

About the exhibit:
Sarah Buckius’ “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is an exhibition where feminist art meets science and the history of invention. On view at Lane Hall as part of U-M Arts Initiative’s themed semester on Arts & Resistance, “!!!techn010ffspring!!!” critiques the patriarchal paradigms of the STEM field by highlighting the history of women inventors. This exhibition brings conceptual invention in fine art and performance to the disciplines of information technology, robotics, and engineering. Buckius creates “technoffsprings”: complex machines that weave together the history of inventions related to the gendered labor of women, especially regarding women’s social roles as caregivers and subjects of care themselves.

Trained as an engineer and an artist, Buckius’ machines are intentionally complex, layered, and illogical or absurdly logical. In the nature of women’s caregiving, they teeter between order and chaos. Her “digital tinkerings” tell epic tales of motherhood, technology, female bodies, and commerce—both personal and externalized through women’s inventions and early forays that bridged caregiving and commerce. Buckius' work proposes improvisation as a form of absurdist resistance to, and alternative to, patriarchal, capitalist, production-based, and seemingly rational, useful, logical systems.

About the Artist:
Sarah Buckius is an artist, educator, and engineer who lives in Santa Cruz, California. Originally from the midwest (Champaign, IL), she holds an M.F.A. from The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and a B.S. in mechanical engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Her creative work, which incorporates digital media (video, photography, collage, animation) and performance, has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Through her work, she weaves "Intertwined HerStories" that originate from the cross-section of *-gender-*-technology-*-lens-based-media-*-the human body-*-caregiving-*. She works in the space of absurdity that emerges at the point of disconnect between the seemingly coded / structured / ordered / production-based space of technology and the messy / complex / idiosyncratic space of humanity and is interested in uncovering the ways in which working with and creating technology illuminates humanness, including gender biases. With an underlying goal of supporting DEI in STEM fields, her work illuminates the ingenuity of diverse groups of people.

“!!!techn010ffspring!!!” is open for viewing M-F, 9am-4pm or by appointment. University of Michigan instructors can email LaneHallExhibits@umich.edu to request a group tour or schedule a class visit.

Creating Computing Education Beyond Engineering (October 5, 2023 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/113163 113163-21830171@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, October 5, 2023 2:00pm
Location: Lurie Robert H. Engin. Ctr
Organized By: Engineering Education Research

The term “computer science” was invented as something that should be taught to everyone in order to facilitate learning other subjects and to reduce the danger of having a powerful new technology controlled by only a few. Computing education has not become the democratizing force imagined in the 1960’s. Today, computer science has a narrow definition and is mostly about getting a high-paying technology job. If we want to reach the original and more general goal, we have to change how we teach computing and support alternative end-points for computing education. In this talk, I review the history of “computer science” and its earlier purpose. I describe and demonstrate new kinds of languages, approaches, and courses that broaden accessibility to computing education.

This seminar is HYBRID (in-person and via Zoom). Refreshments will be provided if you join us in-person.

2023 Annual Ford Lecture in Physics | Secrets of Einstein's Equation (October 20, 2023 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/111607 111607-21827317@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, October 20, 2023 4:00pm
Location: Rackham Graduate School (Horace H.)
Organized By: Department Colloquia

Albert Einstein is indelibly associated with a famous equation: E=mc^2, relating the mass of an object to its energy. But that is not what physicists consider when they say, "Einstein's Equation." The real Einstein's Equation is part of general relativity, which relates the curvature of spacetime to the mass and energy distributed within it. Professor Carroll will explain why the geometry of spacetime has anything to do with gravity and how this famous equation expresses how spacetime curves.

There will be a reception before the lecture, beginning at 3:30 PM, in Assembly Hall across from the Amphitheatre. Seating will be open at 3:15 PM.

This lecture will be in-person and livestreamed at https://myumi.ch/35d3z.

We are excited to invite all interested students to attend an open house to learn about the UM's graduate program in Engineering Education Research (EER). UM's EER program represents a unique, interdisciplinary model: EER Ph.D. students (who enjoy a full funding package) and M.S. students are part of a college-wide program, while several tenure-line EER faculty are embedded within the traditional engineering departments. The integrated nature of the program allows the EER faculty and their research groups to be well-integrated with the traditional engineering disciplines, and it provides students a better opportunity to engage in innovative research and make scholarly contributions to the engineering education community. More information about the program is available at our EER website (https://eer.engin.umich.edu/)

Students from all institutions are invited to attend (a Zoom link will be emailed prior to the program). Participants will hear about the EER graduate program, meet faculty who are recruiting students for AY 2024-25, and learn about career opportunities as a UM graduate in this field. Application fee waivers will be provided to those who attend.

International Perspectives on Teamwork in Engineering Education (November 9, 2023 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/114745 114745-21833411@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, November 9, 2023 2:00pm
Location: Duderstadt Center
Organized By: Engineering Education Research

Teamwork or collaboration skills are integral to contemporary engineering practice and are highly valued in academic and industry settings. ABET also considers vital teamwork skills as one key student learning outcome for accreditation and evaluation of engineering education. Research shows that student learning outcomes are highly affected by faculty beliefs about teaching and learning. Effective professional development programs for faculty need to understand their beliefs as these beliefs shape their teaching practices. As engineering practice and engineering education are becoming increasingly globalized, we need to take a more culturally relevant approach to understand how key competencies such as teamwork are culturally constructed and how the development of faculty beliefs is affected by broader cultural factors. In this seminar, Yi will introduce some of her educational background and research experiences to provide an international lens to understand teamwork in engineering education. She will then present a systematic review of the existing Chinese literature on how Chinese faculty conceptualize teamwork in the classroom. In conclusion, she will also talk about some parts of her dissertation, how faculty in the US develop their teaching beliefs about teamwork.

Faculty Communities within Professional Organizations: Influencing Social Responsibility Teaching in Engineering Education (December 7, 2023 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/115746 115746-21835458@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, December 7, 2023 2:00pm
Location: Duderstadt Center
Organized By: Engineering Education Research

Abstract: Professional organizations (POs) are established communities that significantly influence the competencies and values of engineers, but the impact of their interaction with academia on undergraduate education is not fully understood. This study addresses this gap by exploring how engineering faculty in POs strategically incorporate social responsibility into their teaching. Relying on Paulo Freire's critical consciousness and the Transformational Agency framework, it examines faculty reflections on societal and power dynamics for curriculum change.

Conducted over eight months, the study focuses on a Community of Practice (CoP) within the American Institute of Chemical Engineering’s Education Division, engaging faculty from multiple institutions. We employed qualitative methods, analyzing interview data through thematic analysis with In-Vivo and Axial coding. Preliminary results highlight how the CoP influences faculty’s reflective practices and understanding of societal structures, suggesting it enhances educators' critical awareness and ability to integrate social responsibility into their teaching. The findings deepen our understanding of POs’ role in evolving engineering education. They showcase how educators’ involvement in POs can shape socially responsible engineers, addressing the complex societal roles engineers face. This seminar aims to inspire educators with strategies for creating transformative learning environments.

Tailored Nudges Improve Students’ Scores on Mastery-based Assignments (January 11, 2024 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/116492 116492-21837233@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, January 11, 2024 2:00pm

Abstract: Mastery-based assignments typically provide students with multiple opportunities to improve their performance, but getting students to take advantage of these opportunities is difficult. We report on the implementation of a two-part series of nudges designed to improve students’ engagement with and performance on mastery-based assignments in high-enrollment, introductory undergraduate courses. Students received one or two email-based nudges for each assignment, providing both decision information and decision assistance. Delivered via email by a digital coaching system that provides tailored support to students, we evaluated the effectiveness of viewing versus not viewing these personalized nudges across introductory courses in mathematics, computer science, and engineering over five terms at a large, research-intensive university. We find that viewing versus not viewing nudges is significantly related to improved outcomes. Viewing the first of the two-part nudge series is associated with a 3% increase in scores on average. Importantly, we found a significant interaction with prior academic performance such that students with the lowest average academic performance across all courses are predicted to benefit the most—up to 9%—from nudging.

Photovoice: Visualizing Engineering Identity Experiences (February 1, 2024 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/117628 117628-21839718@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, February 1, 2024 2:00pm

Organized By: Engineering Education Research

Abstract: Researchers have shown that students are most likely to leave engineering undergraduate programs during their first two years. Justifiably, several studies have investigated engineering student persistence and attrition, especially during the first year, and then informed the development of interventions to address the challenges. While those interventions have improved freshmen retention in some institutions, less has been published on the impacts of these interventions on the sophomore student experience. In this study, we examined the experiences of sophomore engineering students and explored how these experiences relate to their identities as engineers. We conducted this study using photovoice, a methodology/intervention in which participants submit photographs to help describe their experiences and give recommendations on improving their experiences and resolving their concerns. Through empowering participants to co-construct the knowledge, we were able to see what interest, competence, and recognition as engineers looked like from the student’s perspectives. This work has the potential to yield practical solutions that institutional stakeholders can implement, such as intentionally creating cultures of well-being, self-reflection, and belonging.

Climate change is already having dramatic effects on human health and well-being. How are we adapting to these new realities and mitigating health risks for the world’s most vulnerable communities? Join us for the third seminar of the series: Climate Vulnerability & Health — How are we Responding?

In this talk, Dr. Pimentel Walker and Dr. Junghans will explore innovative housing solutions for climate resilience in self-built settlements in São Paulo, Brazil and Bucaramanga, Colombia.

Full description:
Heat is a growing health risk aggravated by expanding urbanization, an increase in high-temperature extremes, and demographic changes. Communities living in precarious settlements are disproportionately vulnerable to extreme heat. Although building techniques to improve indoor thermal comfort can be an adaptation option, we lack design research tailored to the realities of self-built homes. Design research for passive cooling frequently stems from building standards in the Global North. In the Global South, these strategies target middle-class buildings, with higher-end formal construction built by design professionals and engineers.

This pilot project conducted an ethnographic account of auto-construction practices and constraints in two informal and precarious settlements in São Paulo, Brazil, and Bucaramanga, Colombia. The computational simulations identified interventions that theoretically improve occupant thermal comfort by increasing air velocity and lowering indoor temperatures, ultimately reducing heat stress. Our collaborative research in Burkina Faso has already implemented interventions, and it is in the assessment stage. However, are all identified passive cooling strategies equally feasible and responsive to community expectations? Working with community members and their advocacy networks, we plan to co-develop passive cooling strategies that are desirable and achievable, amplifying the voices of low-income residents in the policy agendas for climate and housing justice.

Puentes is excited about its upcoming Latinx Research Week (LRW). Latinx Research Week is an interdisciplinary, conference-style series of events that we host annually on campus to uplift research being conducted by Latinx staff, faculty, and students, as well as research relevant to Latinx populations. This year Latinx Research Week will be held on March 11th - 14th in the Michigan Union. In 2023, we were thrilled to host 16 research sessions, allocate space for over 70 presenters, and welcome over 300 attendees across our events. We hope to see an even greater turn out this year.

he theme for Latinx Research Week 2024 is Illuminating Familismo. Familismo is a psychological construct as well as a protective Latinx cultural value that emphasizes the importance of family support, loyalty, and honor. Through our interdisciplinary program, we hope attendees will reflect on, interrogate, and reimagine how the academy can be transformed to acknowledge, welcome, and illuminate both our biological and chosen familial relationships. In past years, we have seen spouses, partners, siblings, parents, children, and members of the larger Latinx community attend Latinx Research Week in support of their presenting family members, thus reimagining what an academic conference could and should look like. Additionally, we have seen other families in attendance: families of co-workers, cohort-mates, best friends, and lab families to name a few. We recognize that many members of the Puentes familia may be far from home but have still chosen to plant roots here and create meaningful communities of chosen family members at UM. We hope that our curated program will illuminate the importance of familismo and encourage attendees to imagine how we can transform academic spaces into more inclusive spaces that honor our families, chosen or otherwise, and the ways they have supported our academic journeys. Latinx Research Week 2024: Illuminating Familiso highlights the many ways our families motivate, inspire, encourage, humanize, and uplift us as we conduct groundbreaking work in our respective fields.

Understanding Barriers to Mental Health Related Help-Seeking in Undergraduate Engineers (March 14, 2024 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/120131 120131-21844101@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 14, 2024 2:00pm

Abstract: The prevalence of mental health disorders on college campuses is of increasing concern. Within engineering, there has been an increase in the amount of research conducted on characterizing student mental health and understanding the influence of engineering culture on mental wellness. Research has shown that engineering students in mental health distress are less likely to have received professional help compared to their peers. This identifies a treatment gap for engineering students, meaning that only a portion of those in mental health distress are seeking professional treatment. Addressing the treatment gap can improve the prognosis of mental health problems and reduce progression to more chronic or severe disorders. Through this talk, I will present results of both qualitative and quantitative research studies aimed at better understanding the beliefs that engineering students have about seeking help for a mental health concern. In particular, I will discuss barriers and facilitators to help-seeking including challenges in navigating the mental healthcare system, the perception that help-seeking is a sacrifice of time and academics, and the importance of mental health culture in engineering. Further, I will talk about the influence of engineering student, faculty and staff messaging on students’ beliefs about help seeking. Results of this work will provide guidance for intervention development to improve mental health related help-seeking in undergraduate engineering students.
