Beyond Land Acknowledgments

Thursday, August 31, 2023
4:00 - 5:30 p.m.
1010 Weiser Hall

Strolling dinner with reception to follow; this event is in-person only.
The history of American anthropology and the founding of the University of Michigan are inextricably linked to that of First Nations. In recognition of that history, both the University of Michigan and the American Anthropological Association have articulated a commitment to American Indian and Alaskan Native communities, scholars, and students as part of their institutional work to create more inclusive and diverse organizations.

One very public way in which this has happened has been the creation and performance of land acknowledgments, an act intended to raise an audience’s awareness of the colonial history that alienated local tribes from their land base and to educate audiences about the existence of these (contemporary) Indigenous communities. The proliferation of land acknowledgements has also resulted in a critical discussion of their use(s) such that the AAA stopped incorporating them into their annual meetings and other events in 2021. Because of the visibility of land acknowledgments, from personal emails to event introductions, we will begin with the debates they have provoked about tokenization, issues of recognition (of Indigenous people) and ongoing coloniality, and failures of accountability.

We invite you to join us in this discussion and our endeavor to reconceptualize land acknowledgments, their role in academic organizations and institutions, and the potential they signify. We will move beyond these moments of awareness-raising and consider other opportunities that institutions have to create a more inclusive environment for Indigenous peoples, as students, scholars, advocates, artists, stakeholders and stewards.

For questions or to request accessibility accommodations, please email anthro.exec.secretary@umich.edu.

Location: Michigan Union
Organized By: Native American Studies

The Native American Studies program at University of Michigan proudly presents author Angeline Boulley (Sault Ste. Marie Chippewa) as the 2023 Robert J. Berkhofer Lecturer.

Angeline Boulley, an enrolled member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, is a storyteller who writes about her Ojibwe community in Michiganʻs Upper Peninsula. She is a former Director of the Office of Indian Education at the U.S. Department of Education.
Previously she served as Education Director for her tribe, and also serfed on the Board of Regents at Bay Mills Community College. Angeline lives in southwest Michigan, but her home will always be on Sugar Island.

Firekeeperʻs Daughter, her debut novel, was an instant #1 NYT Bestseller, and is the 2023-24 Michigan Humanities Great Michigan Read selection. The book has been named the Walter Dean Myers Award for Outstanding Childrenʻs Literature, the Printz Award, the William C. Morris award for YA debut literature, and was an American Indian Youth Literature Award Honor Book. Her second novel, Warrior Girl Unearthed, was released in May 2023.

The Berkhofer Lecture series (named for a former U-M professor and founder of the field of Native American studies) was established in 2014 by an alumni gift from the Dan and Carmen Brenner family of Seattle, Washington. In close consultation with the Brenners, Native American Studies created a public lecture series featuring prominent, marquee speakers who would draw audiences from different communities—faculty; students, Ann Arbor; Detroit, and Michigan
tribal communities as well as writers and readers generally. The Berkhofer Lectures are grand affairs, drawing over three hundred in attendance at each event. With the event now streamed online, our audiences are worldwide. Past speakers include literary giants N. Scott Momaday, Joy Harjo, and Gerald Vizenor. Our focus has shifted more recently to highlight emerging Indigenous literary talent including Mary Kathryn Nagle, and Tommy Orange. Most recently we presented biologist and MacArthur Foundation Fellow Robin Wall Kimmerer.

Native American students at U-M have long expressed their desire for greater Native Americans visibility both on campus and off, and we believe that the Berkhofer Lecture takes a meaningful step in that direction. The statewide publicity generated has also become a valuable recruitment incentive for Native American students. Most obviously, the speakers we invite have greatly enhanced the mission and work of Native American Studies at U-M.

Join us at 6:30PM for light refreshments and a book giveaway!
The event is free and open to the public.

Research for Indigenous Social Action and Equity (RISE) presents a screening of Imagining the Indian: The Fight Against Native American Mascoting, immediately followed by a panel discussion featuring internationally renowned Indigenous activists, scholars, and film makers: Suzan Harjo, Stephanie Fryberg, Phil Deloria, Aviva Kempner, Ben West, and Yancey Burns.

Imagining the Indian: The Fight Against Native American Mascoting is an award-winning documentary that examines the movement that is ending the use of Native American names, logos, and mascots in the world of sports and beyond. The film details the current uprising against the misappropriation of Native culture in a national reckoning about racial injustice that has succeeded in the removal of Confederate imagery, toppling statues of Christopher Columbus and forcing corporate sponsors of Washington’s NFL team to demand it change its most-offensive name. It examines the origin and proliferation of the words, images, and gestures that many Native people and their allies find offensive. Imagining the Indian explores the impact that stereotyping and marginalization of Native history have had on Native people. It chronicles the long social movement to eliminate mascoting.

Apalache? Appalachia? The Talimali Band of Apalachee Indians, Twenty-First Century Colonialism, and the Struggle for Tribal Sovereignty (November 9, 2023 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/114499 114499-21832980@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, November 9, 2023 5:00pm
Location: Modern Languages Building
Organized By: Romance Languages & Literatures

Colonial studies are often conducted within the “bubble” of academia and in isolation from the descendants of the communities most dramatically impacted by the ravages of colonialism. In this talk, Kimberly C. Borchard (Randolph-Macon College) will discuss how her first monograph, Appalachia as Contested Borderland of the Early Modern Atlantic, 1528-1715, in chronicling two centuries of atrocities committed against the Apalachee people and other Native societies of the American southeast, led to a new project documenting Apalachee history since 1763. Through contact with living descendants of the people that first encountered Spanish gold-seekers in the Florida peninsula in the early sixteenth century, Borchard has transitioned from purely historical research to contemporary advocacy for living members of the Apalachee tribe, whose land claims and sovereignty continue to be systematically ignored by the U.S. government.

Kim Borchard earned her B.A. and M.A. from Ohio University and her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. She teaches courses in Spanish, Latin American colonial literature, the social issues surrounding Latin American immigration to the U.S., and humor in Spanish at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia. Her first book, Appalachia as Contested Borderland of the Early Modern Atlantic, 1528-1715 explores the European obsession with Appalachian mineral resources from 1528 to 1715, reframing Appalachian history within the fields of Latin American, early American, and Atlantic history. Her next book, tentatively titled The Talimali Band the Apalachee Indians of Louisiana: The Struggle for Survival and Federal Reinstatement of One of America's Oldest Tribes, 1763-2024, will document the history of the Apalachee diaspora in Louisiana after the tribe's expulsion from Florida in 1704.

Hula Performance (November 30, 2023 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/115439 115439-21834676@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, November 30, 2023 6:00pm
Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: Department of American Culture

In the 1890s Native Hawaiians lived through the overthrow of their sovereign kingdom by rogue American businessmen in 1893, and the annexation of their islands to the United States in 1898. Historians reading English-language sources wrote that Hawaiians did not oppose annexation. But opposition and fierce loyalty are loud and vociferous in Hawaiian-language sources. As part of the "Arts and Resistance" theme semester, this semesterʻs hula class focused on this period, and will present two original class choreographies of poetic texts from that era.

Free and open to the public.

PSC Brownbag Series: Equity and the ACA’s impact on Indigenous birth givers (January 29, 2024 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/115624 115624-21835164@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, January 29, 2024 12:00pm
Location: Institute For Social Research
Organized By: Population Studies Center

The PSC Brown Bag Series runs live and on Zoom this year, Mondays from noon to 1.

Speaker: Danielle Gartner

Seminar Date: 1/29/24

Equity and the ACA’s impact on Indigenous birth givers

Indigenous birth givers bear a disproportionate burden of poor pregnancy outcomes (e.g., preterm birth, hypertensive disorders, gestational diabetes mellitus, severe maternal morbidity, and maternal and infant mortality) that disrupt birth ceremonies and portend future health concerns experienced by children, mothers, families, and communities. Indigenous birth givers also often hold citizenship in sovereign Nations with whom the US has agreements of fiduciary responsibility. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) is a complex set of policies that have demonstrated positive impact on perinatal health. Unfortunately, conversations to repeal the ACA are ongoing and often do not include the specific needs or contexts of American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) peoples. Because the ACA included several AIAN-specific provisions, there is opportunity for differential impact and ultimately, the potential to reduce health inequities between AIAN and white birth givers. In partnership with an advisory board of Indigenous health services and policy experts, this project combines qualitative and quantitative research analyzing national datasets and interviews with expert consultants to provide understanding of how to make federal health policy work equitably for Indigenous birth givers in the US.

Danielle R. Gartner (Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians) is a mother, sister, daughter, auntie, and relative. As an academic, she identifies as a population health scientist whose work recognizes and supports Indigenous self-determination, sovereignty, and resurgence. Dr. Gartner’s projects have been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the Michigan Health Endowment Fund. She is an assistant professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Michigan State University.

Understanding Working Women’s Lives: An Exploration of Postpartum Allyship in Organizations (March 22, 2024 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/116544 116544-21837560@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 22, 2024 1:30pm
Location: Ross School of Business
Organized By: Interdisciplinary Committee on Organizational Studies - ICOS

Many women experience psychological and emotional challenges during their transition to becoming a working mother, making the reentry process after parental leave crucial for helping women thrive at work and at home. Within this talk, I will provide an overview of past scholarship I have conducted in this area on breastfeeding in the workplace and postpartum depression. Then, I will discuss our research on postpartum allyship—specific behaviors that coworkers and managers can enact to support and advocate for working mothers during their reentry process postpartum. To do so, I will highlight findings from three complementary studies. In Study 1, we adopted a qualitative approach to gain insight into the forms of allyship working mothers found valuable. We then build upon these findings in Study 2 by developing and validating a scale of postpartum allyship. Finally, in Study 3, integrating emergent themes from our qualitative data with tenets of the social cognitive model of career self-management (Lent & Brown, 2013, 2019), we use our newly-developed measure in a time-lagged study focused on the cognitive, affective, and behavioral impact of postpartum mothers’ experiences of allyship. Results indicated that postpartum allyship experiences bolster work-motherhood self- efficacy and reduce guilt which, in turn, yield important implications for working mothers’ turnover intentions, work-family capital, and postpartum depressive symptoms. Across these papers, I aim to bring theoretical and practical attention to how to best support working mothers.

Location: 202 S. Thayer
Organized By: Institute for the Humanities

With the “Hear, Here” series, we aim to facilitate conversations around new research in the humanities. Faculty fellows at the Institute for the Humanities will discuss a part of their current project in a short talk followed by a Q & A session.

This talk theorizes nation-states as bundles of command powers that are key to racial capitalist operability. It rethinks borders, citizenship, international law, war-making, and other state processes as ways racial capitalism operates by enacting “socially good” violence on people and places treated as killable. The intention of this operational account is not to make racial capitalism seem implacable, but to show that its doings are always threatened by protocols for making, continuing, and defending specific, grounded living (Black, Indigenous, migrant, and more). By refusing killability and authorizing mutual survival, such “other doings” evade and break state-capital violence circuits. Though pushed below or outside of ‘politics’, as conventionally understood, such “doings together” are powerful, transformative forces.

Jodi Melamed is a Normal Freehling Visiting Fellow at the Institute for the Humanities and a Professor of English and Race, Ethnic, and Indigenous Studies at Marquette University.
