Speakers:
Alex John London, PhD
Professor of Ethics and Philosophy
Director of the Center for Ethics and Policy at Carnegie Mellon University
Explainability Is Not the Solution to Structural Challenges to AI in Medicine

Explainability is often treated as a necessary condition for ethical applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in Medicine. In this brief talk I survey some of the structural challenges facing the development and deployment of effective AI systems in health care to illustrate some of the limitations to explainability in addressing these challenges. This talk builds on prior work (London 2019, 2022) to illustrate how ambitions for AI in health care likely require significant changes to key aspects of health systems.

Melissa McCradden, PhD, MHSc
Director of AI in Medicine
The Hospital for Sick Children
On the Inextricability of Explainability from Ethics: Explainable AI does not Ethical AI Make

Explainability is embedded into a plethora of legal, professional, and regulatory guidelines as it is often presumed that an ethical use of AI will require explainable algorithms. There is considerable controversy, however, as to whether post hoc explanations are computationally reliable, their value for decision-making, and the relational implications of their use in shared decision-making. This talk will explore the literature across these domains and argue that while post hoc explainability may be a reasonable technical goal, it should not be offered status as a moral standard by which AI use is judged to be ‘ethical.’

He was elected a Member of the National Academy of Engineering (2004), and a Member (Academician) of Academia Sinica (2000). A Fellow of American Society for Quality, of Institute of Mathematical Statistics, of INFORMS, and of American Statistical Association. He received the COPSS Presidents’ Award in 1987, COPSS Fisher Lecture Award in 2011, Deming Lecture in 2012. He has won other awards, including the Shewhart Medal (2008), the Pan Wenyuan Technology Award (2008), Class of 1934 Distinguished Professor Award and Sigma Xi Monie A. Ferst Award both at Georgia Institute of Technology in 2020. He was the 1998 Mahalanobis Memorial Lecturer at the Indian Statistical Institutes, received the inaugural Akaike Memorial Lecture Award in 2016 sponsored by the Japan Statistical Society and the Institute of Statistical Mathematics, Tokyo, the 2017 Box Medal from ENBIS, and an honorary doctor degree at the University of Waterloo.

He has published more than 190 research articles. He has supervised 51 Ph.D.'s, out of which more than half are teaching in major research departments in statistics/engineering/business in US/Canada/Asia/Europe. Among them, there are 24 Fellows of ASA, IMS, ASQ, IAQ, and IIE, four are editors of major statistics journals, and one is a Fellow of Royal Society of Canada (FRSC). He co-authors with Mike Hamada the book "Experiments: Planning, Analysis, and Optimization" (Wiley, 3rd ed. 2021) and with R. Mukerjee the book “A Modern Theory of Factorial Designs” (Springer, 2006).

Abstract: Most “learning” in big data is driven by the data alone. Some people may believe this is sufficient because of the sheer data size. If the physical world is involved, this approach is often insufficient. In this talk I will give a recent study to illustrate how physics and data are used jointly to learn about the “truth” of the physical world. It also serves as an example of engineering analytics, which in itself has many forms and meanings. In an attempt to understand the turbulence behavior of an injector, a new design methodology is needed which combines engineering physics, computer simulations and statistical modeling. There are two key challenges: the simulation of high-fidelity spatial-temporal flows (using the Navier-Stokes equations) is computationally expensive, and the analysis and modeling of this data requires physical insights and statistical tools. A surrogate model is presented for efficient flow prediction in injectors with varying geometries, devices commonly used in many engineering applications. The novelty lies in incorporating properties of the fluid flow as simplifying model assumptions, which allows for quick emulation in practical turnaround times, and also reveals interesting flow physics which can guide further investigations.

LHS Collaboratory November Session

Speaker:

Kadija Ferryman, PhD
Assistant Professor
Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health

In this talk, Professor Ferryman will discuss the merits and challenges of conducting health equity reviews of artificial intelligence (AI) tools used in health and medicine. The talk will examine how interdisciplinary approaches from the social sciences, bioethics and humanities, and computational fields can be involved in the development of concepts, methods, frameworks, and guidelines for understanding and governing digital health tools.

Dr. Kadija Ferryman is a cultural anthropologist who studies the social, cultural, and ethical implications of health information technologies. Specifically, her research examines how genomics, digital medical records, artificial intelligence, and other technologies impact racial disparities in health. As a Postdoctoral Scholar at the Data & Society Research Institute in New York, she led the Fairness in Precision Medicine research study, which examines the potential for bias and discrimination in predictive precision medicine.

She earned a BA in Anthropology from Yale University, and a PhD in Anthropology from The New School for Social Research. Before completing her PhD, she was a policy researcher at the Urban Institute where she studied how housing and neighborhoods impact well-being, specifically the effects of public housing redevelopment on children, families, and older adults.

Trust and Cooperation Beyond the Network (November 11, 2022 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/97839 97839-21795219@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, November 11, 2022 1:30pm
Location: Ross School of Business
Organized By: Interdisciplinary Committee on Organizational Studies - ICOS

My premise is that understanding trust beyond a network is essential to enhancing creativity and achievement within the network. I build on three anchor results (anchor results are strong, robust empirical results likely to be found in quality research): (1) Network brokers are more creative and successful than other people. (2) Returns to network brokerage are contingent on broker reputation in a target market – poor reputation means poor returns to brokerage. (3) Trust and reputation are facilitated and maintained in densely-connected, closed networks. But brokers usually operate outside the network around a target audience, so they operate beyond reputation governance within the network. Our wireless world has us each more aware of how we and our friends are different from people beyond our network. Much of what we see and hear, we do not like. Intolerance and abuse of people beyond our network is the fundamental issue targeted here. I use well-established network theory to predict “trust reversal:” The conditions that encourage trust and cooperation within a network have a by-product; they reverse to encourage suspicion and abuse beyond the network. Successful people are especially prone to the bias. Initial results are intriguingly supportive.

About Hannah:
Hannah joined Bank of America in 2021 as a Wealth Management Rotational Analyst within the Retirement & Personal Wealth Solutions organization. Her first rotation was in the Institutional Client Acquisition team where she supported financial advisors in leveraging the Institutional Retirement platform to drive more retail access flow. She's now in her second rotation with the Defined Contribution Product Management team where her primary role is to develop and implement the new robust operating model that supports the client-facing Consulting Relations team in engaging with third party investment consultants to increase brand awareness and win business. Hannah holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Michigan with a minor in Business at the Ross School of Business. She's currently a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) candidate and holds both FINRA Series 7 and Series 66 licenses. With her passion in furthering diversity and inclusion efforts in the workplace and beyond the workplace, Hannah joined the leadership team and currently serves as the Chapter Finance Chair for Bank of America's Asian Leadership Network (an employee resource group). She also sits on the Finance Committee and serves as the Associate Director of Finance for the Boston chapter of a non-profit organization National Association of Asian American Professionals (NAAAP). Outside of her day-to-day work, Hannah is a travel enthusiast, an aspiring photographer, and a physical book reader and loyalist.

2023 Wallenberg Symposium: Equity in Architectural Education Consortium (January 30, 2023 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/103492 103492-21807344@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, January 30, 2023 3:00pm
Location: Art and Architecture Building
Organized By: A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning

Mentorship is wonderful, rewarding, life-changing, transformative, effective, gratifying, substantive, and beneficial. It is also challenging, time-consuming, expensive, fragmented, hard to measure, and elusive. Mentoring experiences are all unique, and grounded in the impetus to share and to connect. As a mentor or a mentee, once you’ve had a taste of mentorship, you want more. On January 30, 2023, join panelists from the Equity in Architectural Education Consortium (EAEC), who will be in conversation about mentorship in the discipline, the profession, and its future in architecture and its related fields. Over the course of three separate panels, the discussion will share experiences and recommendations on: how mentoring provides a strong start to your education and career; where mentorship can establish new relationships and surprising paths for your professional development; ways mentorship boosts your capacity to judge your own advancement and excellence. Join us in this effort to better understand where we agree, where we disagree, and where we can find areas for collective action.

This year’s discussion is grateful to honor the legacy and impact of Taubman College alumnus, Raoul Wallenberg, remembered and honored for his courageous humanitarian acts in World War II Hungary.

Panelists and guest moderator:

Akima Brackeen (Jeanne and John Rowe Fellow and Visiting Assistant Professor, Illinois Institute of Technology, IIT)
Andrew Chin (Interim Dean, School of Architecture and Engineering, Florida A&M University, FAMU)
Edmund Graham (Associate Director, National Center for Institutional Diversity; University of Michigan, NCID UM)
Bradford Grant (Interim Chair, Howard University, HU)
Coleman Jordan (Thesis Director and Assistant Professor, Morgan State University, MSU)
Isaac Mangual-Martínez (Thesis Coordinator and Visiting Instructor, Virginia Tech)
Stephanie Pilat (Director of the Division of Architecture, University of Oklahoma)
David Rifkind (Director of the School of Architecture, University of Florida)
Carmina Sánchez-del-Valle (Professor, Hampton University)
Elisa Silva (Associate Professor, Wolfsonian Public Humanities Lab and Department of Architecture, Florida International University, FIU)

The Raoul Wallenberg Lecture was initiated in 1971 by Sol King, a former classmate of Wallenberg's. An endowment was established in 1976 for an annual lecture to be offered in Raoul's honor on the theme of architecture as a humane social art.

As stewards of transition, we look to arm incoming students with the hope and promise of a better future through higher education. Why then, does that process create such challenges for the students and for the helpers themselves? In this webinar, we will explore the common vulnerabilities in both students and educators that most miss when undertaking the awesome task of guiding youth through the milestones of life. While the goal stays focused on how best to support the students, the process of supporting and protecting yourself comes first.

Mark Talaga has been counseling gifted individuals for over 10 years and is the owner and director of the Center for Identity Potential. Mark's experience with gifted counseling began in 2012 under the mentorship of Andy Mahoney, a pioneer and expert in the field of counseling the gifted. Mark is a former video game professional who utilizes his knowledge of gaming and technology to create a strong relationship with many of the kids with whom he works. Through his own personal struggle with executive functioning, validating his giftedness, and finding purpose and meaning in this world, Mark has developed expertise in the education and skills necessary to help gifted children activate their potential and live more authentic, fulfilling lives.

The MIW program offers an opportunity each year for 20 undergraduates from any major to spend a semester (Fall or Winter) in Washington D.C. Students combine coursework with an internship that reflects their particular area of interest (such as American politics, international studies, history, the arts, public health, economics, the media, the environment, science, and technology). Students work four days a week, attend an elective one evening a week, and a research course on Friday mornings. They spend their weekends exploring the city and taking in cultural events.

Alum Connection with Theo Poling: How Experiences in Film, Publishing, and Activism Led to Pivotal Career Moments (March 8, 2023 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/104305 104305-21808809@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, March 8, 2023 3:00pm
Location: LSA Building
Organized By: LSA Opportunity Hub

Theo Poling (they/them or he/him) amassed success in high school by self-publishing and selling their writing on Amazon long before it was popular on TikTok. When it came time to choose a college, the Ann Arbor-raised Theo opted to go out-of-state and study playwriting and screenwriting at the University of Southern California where they published Black Knuckle and Deputy Maltese and Into the Intersticks. As they advanced deeper into the film industry, however, they also began to notice the inequities in the industry, and knew that they could be doing more. This ushered in a defining career moment for Theo which brought them back to U-M as a transfer student. At U-M, Theo continued to excel in writing and publishing, but also developed a new passion too: higher education and mentorship. Theo now returns to LSA to answer questions about how they got started in different industries, when they knew it was time to change course, and how they continue to navigate career growth as a young professional.

About Theo:
Theo Poling graduated from the University of Michigan with degrees in Creative Writing & Literature and Arts & Ideas in the Humanities. While at the university, Theo founded the Trans and Gender Nonconforming Arts Review. They are passionate about institutional equity and making sure all students feel seen and heard. In their free time, Theo loves to hike, foster cats, and is hard at work writing novels and television screenplays for production.

You should attend this session if you are:
- Interested in building a career in Creative Arts, DEI, Education, or Film & Media Studies.
- Curious about writing, publishing, querying or pitching for TV
- Thinking about grad school after your undergrad degree

What you’ll gain by attending:
- Ideas for how to go about finding your first job after graduation
- Perspectives on juggling rejection in the writing and creative industries
- Answers to questions on how to get your writing published.

RSVP NOW to be part of the conversation.

The Opportunity Hub aims to deliver inclusive and accessible experiences and welcomes all LSA students to participate. This event is on the first floor of a wheelchair accessible building which includes wheelchair-accessible restrooms on the first, a gender-inclusive and accessible restroom on the [first floor], places to sit or stand during the event, and accessible parking options nearby. To request other accommodations please contact LSA Hub Events at lsa.hubevents@umich.edu or 734-763-4674 so we can make arrangements.

Trooper often finds himself in rooms packed with engineers and programmers, helping think through technological developments and their impact on people seeking food or access to healthcare. “I’m the LSA person in those rooms,” he says, referring to the critical thinking skills and multiple disciplines he studied in LSA that still give him an edge in his nearly thirty-year career. Join Trooper in this conversation that will explore how he maneuvered into this rapidly expanding “socio-tech” and tech-adjacent space. Learn the power of internships and how an internship experience led Trooper to a role with President Clinton’s administration. Ask Trooper all your questions about getting started in tech, government and policy, and nonprofit leadership. Join us!

About Trooper:
Trooper Sanders is CEO of Benefits Data Trust, a nonprofit that uses data, technology, policy change, and direct service to help people tap the more than $60 billion in unclaimed benefits that support critical needs such as food security and healthcare. Trooper brings over 20 years of experience working at the crossroads of business, government, and the nonprofit sector. Before joining BDT, Trooper was a Rockefeller Foundation fellow and worked on the social and economic implications of the global rise of artificial intelligence. For eight years, Trooper ran Wise Whisper, a strategic advisory practice to financial technology startups, philanthropic initiatives, and business leaders. He has also held White House policy staff positions during two administrations. In the nonprofit sector, he led the creation of ventures addressing issues such as the childhood obesity epidemic in the United States, the economic fallout of disasters, and the private sector's role in international development.

He currently serves on the National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee, the national board of Girl Scouts of USA, and the Military Family Research Institute's advisory board. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Trooper earned his bachelor’s from the LSA (Individualized Concentration in International Political Economy, ‘95) and holds a Master of Science in Regulation from the London School of Economics, as well as a Master of Law from the University of London.

You should attend this session if you are:
- Interested in a career in artificial intelligence and its ethical implications
- Exploring the potential of a career that leverages data for public good
- Curious about how to work at the intersection of business, government, and the nonprofit sector
- An LSA student exploring your career options

What you’ll gain by attending:
- The support of a successful alum with nearly 30 years of varied career experience
- Insights into current and upcoming trends in the socio-tech space
- Answers to your questions about launching your career after graduation

On Thursday, 3/16, we will be hosting the McDonald's VP of US Marketing, Branded Content, and Engagement, JJ Healan. JJ is one of my (Professor Marcus Collins) closest clients at McDonald’s, responsible for leading the Famous Orders campaigns that we created within the walls of McDs along with the Adult Happy Meal activation, and a host of other game-changing initiatives that have helped earn the brand its top spot on Fast Company's 2023 Most Innovative Brands list. Furthermore, JJ has been recognized as Ad Age 2021 Brand Leader of the Year, Business Insider 2021 Rising Star, and more recently one of the 2022 Adweek 50 Luminaries. Needless to say, JJ is amazing, and, fortunately for us, she will be joining us THIS THURSDAY to discuss her career, her successes (at Coke and McDs), her life lessons, and what will be required for tomorrow's marketing leaders.

The event will start at 7pm in the Corner Commons of Blau--Room B1590.
I hope you can join us.

This session will be presented by Kevin DeHority, Michigan Medicine, and will include breakout rooms for further discussion with others.

SUSTAINABILITY FROM THE C-SUITE: COMPLEX DECISION MAKING TO CREATE MORE SUSTAINABLE ENTERPRISES

Description: Search practically any large company, as well as many smaller ones, and you will find a sustainability report detailing all the efforts to create a more environmentally friendly enterprise.

While this is certainly a positive development, companies need to solve not only any potential technical problems, but a range of challenges across the supply chain. This includes questions about what goals to set, which aspects of sustainability to prioritize, the impact on customers, and how to pay for it while keeping investors satisfied.

In this interactive discussion, Gemline Executive Chairman Jonathan Isaacson will discuss, from the vantage point of the Chairman and CEO of a business with a global footprint, the difficult and potentially risky decision-making process involved in making a company more sustainable.

Lurie Engineering Center (Johnson Rooms)
Friday, March 24, 2023
Lunch 12:30 - 1 pm
Talk 1:00 - 2:00 pm

The Wilbert Steffy Lectureship was established in 2003 to honor one of Industrial and Operations Engineering’s early distinguished faculty, Wilbert Steffy. Jonathan Isaacson, Chairman and CEO of The Gem Group, is our distinguished speaker this term.
