This lecture will discuss the curatorial strategies of the 12th Shanghai Biennale, inspired by a neologism invented by E. E. Cummigs in the 1930s: “Proregress”. Among other issues, the presentation will discuss the strategies by which the curatorial team of the exhibition addressed the contemporary situation of the world based on the ambivalence of contemporary ideologies, also considering the task of circumventing the intellectual and artistic controls of contemporary China.

Will Bullfighting Survive The Decade? (October 10, 2022 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/99392 99392-21797990@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, October 10, 2022 4:00pm

Bullfighting was once known as Spain’s “national fiesta”. For centuries, it was a major cultural industry not only in the Iberian Peninsula but also in the South of France and across much of Latin America. Ethical objections and a flailing economic model mean that its future is no longer secure. Tales of ageing and flailing audiences have been exaggerated in Spain, with significantly more tickets being sold for bullfights than, say, the theatre. It is, however, an expensive spectacle that cannot be easily downsized. In this lecture, Duncan Wheeler argues that a blanket prohibition is unlikely to take place over the next decade but that, unless public subsidies are increased and/or the traditional and endogamic taurine establishment becomes more imaginative with its business model(s), bullfighting may well cease to exist in its current form before 2030.

Frontiers of Justice: Jews & Muslims in Christian Iberian legislation, 11-12th centuries (November 29, 2022 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/101335 101335-21801231@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, November 29, 2022 4:00pm
Location: Tisch Hall
Organized By: Romance Languages & Literatures

When appraising the position of Jews and Muslims in premodern European societies – and, therefore, the extent to which non-Christians were tolerated, persecuted, and ‘racialised’ in the Latin West – historians habitually turn to legislation as a point of reference. But what social, political, and intellectual work, exactly, did legal texts do in framing religious difference? This talk answers this question through the example of medieval Iberia – where inter-religious encounters were particularly intense, and especially visible in the extant legal records.

The talk highlights the need to better understand the tension between legal norms and practices in discussing how Christian legislation framed religious minorities. To do so, it focuses on the negotiation of violent transgressions against Jews and Muslims in legal franchises drafted during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The talk explores how the regulation of non-Christian violence served as an instrument of political legitimation. It then unfolds how such regulations were resisted, reformed, and accepted at the local level. These texts reflected not simply norms on Christian-Muslim-Jewish interaction, but norms as they were being contested.

Heaven as a Way of Thinking: Dante's Paradiso (January 12, 2023 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/102934 102934-21805565@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, January 12, 2023 7:00pm

What is heaven for? The last third of Dante's Divine Comedy has been seen as the most alien to the modern mind-set. Paradise is often understood as somewhere else, which can make its relevance to the here-and-now seem tangential, even suspect. Just as all stories are illuminated from their end, Paradiso gives us not only a vista in retrospect, but also a glimpse of the underlying pattern of the phenomenal world. It is, therefore, not "elsewhere" so much as another way of reading what appears before us. What heaven is for is analogous to what literature is for.

Alison Cornish is currently Professor of Italian Studies at New York University and President of the Dante Society of America. Before that, she taught at the University of Michigan for 23 years. Her latest book, Believing in Dante, was published by Cambridge University Press this past year (2022).
