Submit a Research Project for the 2021-2022 Academic Year: https://lsa.umich.edu/urop/research-mentors.html

UROP Research Mentors are faculty and post-doc researchers from across all U-M's 19 Schools and Colleges who provide undergraduate student researchers an opportunity to engage in research activities that help them learn about the pursuit of knowledge within an academic discipline. This early exposure to research fosters a valuable academic experience for students. Through this collaboration, students gain research skills and mentorship that lead to academic retention, a more positive undergraduate experience and paths to graduate school.

New Deal policy and the racialization of homeownership
by Jacob William Faber, New York University

Bio:
Jacob William Faber is an Associate Professor at New York University's Robert F. Wagner School of Public Service and holds a joint appointment in NYU's Sociology Department. His research and teaching focuses on spatial inequality. He leverages observational and experimental methods to study the mechanisms responsible for sorting individuals across space and how the distribution of people by race and class interacts with political, social, and ecological systems to create and sustain economic disparities. While there is a rich literature exploring the geography of opportunity, there remain many unsettled questions about the causes of segregation and its effects on the residents of urban ghettos, wealthy suburbs, and the diverse set of places in between.

Michigan Population Studies Center (PSC) Brown Bag seminars highlight recent research in population studies and serve as a focal point for building our research community.

Abstract:
Water connects and obligates people to one another and to their environments in this time of ecological reckoning. Water ties, in this presentation, is an analytical term for, first, the ways that people are tied to water and are obliged to care for it, and second, the consequential and patterned ways that people are tied to one another through their relationships to water. In the Florida Everglades, where the world’s largest wetlands restoration project is underway and where pitched battles are fought over the values of agricultural production (especially sugarcane) and ecosystem health, water ties are the underappreciated keys to achieving flourishing with contested waters. Water ties are also political methodology: methodology for ecosystem governance, for Seminole sovereignty, and for ethnography.

This is a part of the Research Center for Group Dynamics (RCGD) Winter 2022 Series - "Water Ways: New Social Science, Science Studies, and Environmental Approaches to Water"

This is also a part of the class Anthrcul 558 section 002

Precision Health Jan. 2022 Webinar (January 27, 2022 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/90512 90512-21671208@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, January 27, 2022 1:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Precision Health

Join us for a frank discussion about the law and ethics of health research that relies on artificial intelligence and machine learning, and the impact it can have on treatment and perpetuation of health disparities. We’ll discuss legal and ethical issues related to biased algorithms, liability, regulation, data ownership, and responsible use of health data.

Incorporating perspectives from a computational social scientist (Abigail Jacobs, Assistant Professor of Complex Systems and Information, LSA) and a legal scholar with expertise in the responsible use of big data (Nicholson Price, Professor of Law), this webinar will provoke thought and provide important information to help clinicians and data scientists continue their research while also working to improve care and reduce health disparities.

The event will be moderated by Vicki Ellingrod, PharmD, Associate Research Dean and Professor of Pharmacy.

This webinar is the fourth in the Precision Health educational series: "Demystifying the Data, Processes, and Tools that Are Changing Clinical Care."

Abstract:
Shipping plays a crucial role in global circulation and geopolitical imaginaries of mobility. Approximately 90% of the world’s imports and exports travel by sea on some 93,000 merchant vessels, operated by 1.25 million seafarers, carrying almost six billion tons of cargo. This global circulation, however, is dependent on navigating a variety of chokepoints—narrow straits, ports, and other geographic locales that ‘choke’ the seemingly frictionless flow of global shipping. Focusing on ports and shipping lanes in the Bab-el-Mandeb, a narrow strait that separates Africa from Asia and connects the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean, this talk explores the generative power of chokepoints. Beyond the problem of lag, I argue for understanding chokepoint politics—a mode of politics and place-making built on channeling circulation.

The Scars of Life Course Trauma on the Immune System
by Grace Noppert

Monday, January 31
12-1:10 pm ET via Zoom

Abstract:
We are currently observing an unprecedented rise in childhood trauma from COVID-19—specifically related to the loss and disruption of caregiving. Yet, we know little about the impact or persistence of early life trauma on later life immune function. Using nationally representative data on older adults from the U.S. Health and Retirement Study, we examined the association between experiencing parental death or parental separation before the age of 16 years and four markers of immune function in late life: high sensitive C-reactive Protein (CRP), Interleukin-6 (IL-6), soluble Tumor Necrosis Factor (sTNFR), and immune response to cytomegalovirus (CMV) measured by the level of Immunoglobulin G (IgG). We also examined racial and ethnic differences in these associations. We found that racialized minority individuals were more likely to experience parental death/separation in early life compared to non-Hispanic Whites and had poorer immune function in later life. We also found consistent associations between parental death or separation and poor immune function in later life measured by both CMV and IL-6 across all race/ethnic subgroups. This presentation will discuss the growing body of evidence that early life trauma becomes embedded in the architecture of the immune system with consequences for health throughout the life course.

Bio:
Dr. Noppert's work lies at the intersection of biology, sociology, and epidemiology. Her work seeks to explain how social processes become biologically embedded with implications for health across the life course. She began her work as an infectious disease epidemiologist examining health disparities in tuberculosis (TB) in the U.S. Since then, her work has focused on uncovering the social underpinning of a range of infectious diseases, both established (e.g., TB) and emergent (e.g., SARS-CoV-2). Her current work focuses on sociobiological exposures such as persistent viral infections (e.g., CMV, HSV-1, etc.) and how they intersect with the immune system. Understanding the link between social factors, infections, and immune function may hold clues to explaining and disrupting persistent health inequities across the life course.

Michigan Population Studies Center (PSC) Brown Bag seminars highlight recent research in population studies and serve as a focal point for building our research community.

WDI, U-M Poverty Solutions Hosts Inclusive Fintech Pioneer Collins (February 3, 2022 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/91854 91854-21684138@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, February 3, 2022 10:00am

Traditional surveys and questionnaires can be imprecise methods for understanding the needs and motivations of low-income and vulnerable populations. In a Feb. 17 virtual discussion, acclaimed author and entrepreneur Daryl Collins will explore how technology can help researchers, nonprofits and businesses engage and serve these communities around the world.

During the talk, Collins will share examples of how her company, Decodis, is using technology to collect and analyze qualitative data in a more scalable and lower-cost manner. Collins will share examples of collecting data using WhatsApp audio responses to understand changes in gender norms and assessing Google Play reviews of digital lending apps in India. In both examples, Collins will share how she and her team used Natural Language Processing (NLP) – a common market tool - to detect key topics and phrases to unpack the meaning of the responses. She’ll also share how she and her team analyzed speech signals (such as pitch, duration of responses and voice modulation) in the audio files to determine whether the respondent was engaged in their responses, when the respondent was unsure, and when the respondent gave them a “canned response” — i.e., telling the researchers what he/she thought the researchers wanted to hear.

The William Davidson Institute and the University of Michigan’s Poverty Solutions are co-sponsoring the talk, which begins at 5 p.m. is free and open to the public.

As a pioneer working at the intersection of finance and human vulnerability, Collins has built a broad portfolio of work with financial service providers, foundations, bilateral donors and governments. Collins’ work is grounded in a deep understanding of the financial lives of individuals. She is the author of the ground-breaking “Portfolios of the Poor” and creator of the Financial Diaries, a research tool used in over 10 countries, including South Africa, Kenya, Mozambique and Tanzania.

People living at or near poverty levels are less likely to speak their minds when responding to surveys and other efforts to collect data. This hesitancy is understandable, but it also creates a real challenge for researchers, enterprises and policymakers to better understand their needs, said Heather Esper, Director of WDI’s Performance Measurement & Improvement group.

“Daryl Collins is truly a pioneer in collecting and analyzing data to better understand the lives of low-income and vulnerable individuals at scale,” Esper said. “The qualitative methods she uses shed more light on what individuals are saying by accounting for how they say it.”

Collins recently established Decodis with a team of linguists and Natural Language Processing data scientists. Decodis seeks to advance scale and robustness in qualitative research techniques by providing tech-led consumer research methods that are insightful, scalable and low cost. The Decodis team is currently working on a range of projects across a breadth of countries, languages and sectors to explore new ways of both collecting and analyzing open-end response data.

Collins holds bachelor’s and master's degrees in economics from the London School of Economics and a Ph.D. from New York University. She spent the last decade as Managing Director and CEO of BFA, a niche financial inclusion consulting practice with offices in Boston, New York, Nairobi, Accra, New Delhi and Medellin.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Planet Blue Student Leaders

Hello!

We are reaching out on behalf of the Planet Blue Student Leaders’ Off-Campus Housing Team. We are launching a pilot project on fridge organization for off-campus housing students. If you are a student living in off-campus housing and share a fridge with others, this project might be for you!

Did you know that, on average, each off-campus college student produces 38 pounds of food waste a year (RecyclingWorks)? With food prices steadily rising (about 6.8% in 2021 alone, according to the US Bureau of Labor) this can make a serious impact on student budgets.

Our aim is to empower students to organize their fresh and refrigerated produce and food to save money, make food last longer, and reduce food waste. To do this, we’ll provide you with an information packet (complete with fridge organization best-practices, roommate conversation starters and conflict resolution guides, and helpful tips), an educational fridge magnet, and labeling stickers.

If you’re interested in participating or would like to know more, please fill out this form (bit.ly/3qt3crx) or send an email to Ella (ellalars@umich.edu), Meghana (mtummala@umich.edu), Allison (axjiang@umich.edu), or Ari (ariannek@umich.edu). We look forward to working with you!

Best,

The PBSL Off-Campus Housing Team

Racial justice begins with anti-racism. Anti-racism is the active process of identifying and eliminating racism by changing systems, organizational structures, policies, practices, and attitudes so that power is redistributed and shared equitably (University of Calgary). This peer-led teach-in will engage analytical frameworks for examining systemic cultural, social, economic, and political forces in the community along with individual reflection. Our hope is to raise critical consciousness, understand the opportunity for actions, and how our resources can be distributed. This Teach-In will be facilitated by Dillon Alexandro Cathro.

ISR Insights Speaker Series
Exposure to Violence and Subsequent Weapons Use in Two Urban High-Risk Communities
Thursday, Feb. 10, noon ET via Zoom

Speakers: Eric F. Dubow (Adjunct Research Scientist, Research Center for Group Dynamics; Professor of Psychology, Bowling Green State University) and L. R. Huesmann (Amos N Tversky Collegiate Professor Emeritus of Communication Studies and Psychology, Professor Emeritus of Communication and Media, Professor Emeritus of Psychology, College of LSA and Research Professor Emeritus, Research Center for Group Dynamics, Institute for Social Research)

Researchers Dubow and Huesmann report preliminary results of data that they have collected over the last 13 years from youth and young adults in two diverse, urban, high-crime communities (Flint, MI, and Jersey City, NJ). Their findings have shown that early exposure to weapons violence (whether in the family, neighborhood, or through engaging with violent media) significantly correlates at modest levels with weapon carrying, weapon use or threats-to-use, arrests for weapons use, and criminally violent acts 10 years later. Violence exposure was significantly linked to beliefs about the acceptability of behaving aggressively. They argue that youth who observe more violence with weapons, whether in the family, among peers, in the neighborhood, or through the media or video games become infected from the exposure with a social-cognitive-emotional disease (evidenced particularly by normative beliefs approving of gun violence) that increases their own risk of behaving violently with weapons later in life.

PBSL Off-Campus Housing Pilot Project (February 14, 2022 12:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/91050 91050-21675899@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, February 14, 2022 12:00am

Dr. Feranmi Okanlami, Director of Student Accessibility and Accommodation Services, will lead a discussion that centers on the intersection of Race, Ability and the process of finding one’s Place or sense of belonging. Through sharing his own personal experiences of living with disabilities and advocating for more robust and inclusive services for university students living with disabilities, Dr. Okanlami will push participants to think critically about what a truly inclusive and accessible university culture looks like, and will invite them to move away just from theorizing about change, toward enacting the changes they would like to see.

WDI, U-M Poverty Solutions Hosts Inclusive Fintech Pioneer Collins (February 17, 2022 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/91854 91854-21683556@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, February 17, 2022 5:00pm

Each year, the Ross School of Business’s Business+Impact Initiative selects a group of Nonprofit Board Fellows to serve as non-voting members of boards across Southeast Michigan. The Ross community prides itself on using business as a function to create a more equitable and just society, and for over 20 years this program has served as a critical opportunity for graduate students to become involved in, and contribute to, local communities and causes. Each year, the Fellowship hosts a public forum in the form of a panel discussion with representatives from local nonprofit organizations. This year, the theme of the forum is “Stronger Together: How Nonprofits Can Collaborate.” We believe that collaboration between nonprofits will only become more instrumental in combating injustices across America. Join us for a panel discussion featuring four local nonprofit experts.

Panelists:
Kelly Maxwell, DDNRC
Courtney Smith, Detroit Phoenix Center
Kevin Thompson, Good Inc

Location: Power Center for the Performing Arts
Organized By: TEDxUofM

TEDxUofM is a university-wide initiative to galvanize the community for an event like no other; filled with inspiration, discovery, and excitement. Borrowing the template from the world-renowned TED conference, TEDxUofM aims to bring a TED-like experience to the University of Michigan. Our vision is to showcase the most fascinating thinkers and doers, the “leaders and best” in Michigan terms, for a stimulating day of presentations, discussions, entertainment, and art that will spark new ideas and opportunities across all disciplines. Our conference will feature 8 speakers, 3 performing groups, and interactive labs/activities for attendees!

Our theme for this year’s conference is SHATTERPROOF. Through a time of fragmentation and dissonance, individuals and communities have showcased an incredible ability to withstand adversity. Resilience is found in all of us despite the size of the challenge. We use our voices to empower each other. We use ideas to drive us forward. We refuse to crack under pressure. We are shatterproof. As we set the stage with this spirit, our goal is for attendees to discover what being shatterproof means to them.

Managing Melt: Ice, Refrigeration, and Hawaiian Body Politics
Hiʻilei Julia Kawehipuaakahaopulani Hobart, UT Austin – Anthropology

Monday, Feb 21: Open Talks 12-1pm, Grad Workshops 1-3pm
Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/95385019774?pwd=N0I1THZGYlQwZi9UT2Q5dFlXSEttdz09

Abstract:
Nearly everything Hawaiʻi residents eat is imported, despite its history of agricultural abundance, and real estate development has encroached on arable farmlands such that a mere 11.6% of food is locally grown. Not only is Hawaiʻi dependent upon imported food, but the added energy costs built-in for maintaining perishables makes its groceries the most expensive in the United States. In this way, cold chain logics offer one way to trace the role that temperature plays in organizing bodies in within the tropics. Examining how freezing and refrigeration technologies function as a critical node of Hawaiʻi’s food system as a structure of settler colonialism, this talk considers what the promises and limits of thermal management might be for decolonial struggles over land and sovereignty. In doing so, Hiʻilei Julia Kawehipuaakahaopulani Hobart asks: how does ‘artificial’ ice and refrigeration constrain the conditions of possibility within movements that call for de-occupation, demilitarization, and the dismantling of the settler state? In what ways does it support activist and movement spaces? And, lastly, what place does refrigeration have within Indigenous futures that aim to move beyond capitalism, settler colonialism, and imperialism, when coldness has played such an infrastructural role in these political systems of oppression?

The Trouble with Passion: How Searching for Fulfillment at Work Fosters Inequality
Thursday, February 24 at 12pm ET via Zoom

Speaker: Erin Cech, Associate Professor of Sociology, University of Michigan; Faculty Associate, Population Studies Center

“Follow your passion” is a popular mantra for career decision-making in the United States. In this talk, Cech will discuss her research on this ubiquitous cultural narrative that she call the “passion principle.” The passion principle is rooted in tensions between postindustrial capitalism and cultural norms of self-expression and is compelling to college-educated career aspirants and workers because passion is presumed to motivate the hard work required for success while providing opportunities for meaning and self-expression. Although passion-seeking seems like a promising option for individuals hoping to avoid drudgery in their labor force participation, she argues that the passion principle has a dark side: it reinforces socio-economic disadvantages and occupational segregation among career aspirants and workers in the aggregate and helps reproduce an exploited, overworked white-collar labor force. These findings have implications for cultural notions of “good work” popular in higher education and the US workforce and raises broader questions about what it means when becoming a dedicated labor force participant feels like an act of self-fulfillment.

For Friday, 2/25th, we will be talking about this really fantastic article, "Critical Race Theory for HCI". Co-author Professor Kentaro Toyama from SI will be facilitating the discussion.

Even if you aren't able to read each week's article, or haven't been able to make it to previous discussions, you are very welcome to join and listen in on the conversation. This group welcomes all - whether you're a student, staff, faculty, or community member.

Zoom Meeting Passcode: racetech

After the break, we will start reading chapters of Wendy Chun's new book, Discriminating Data: Correlation, Neighborhoods, and the New Politics of Recognition.
We also welcome anyone to facilitate a discussion - if you would be up for it, please add your name to the schedule, linked below.

The full book is available online through the library, but we are working on securing funds to order some physical copies for those who would like one. If you'd like a copy, fill out a google form and we'll follow up.

This two-day, residential retreat includes both unstructured writing time and optional structured writing support, including workshops, consultations, and peer feedback. Consultants from The Writing Center and University Outreach and Engagement will be available to provide feedback both days and will build connections among the writers throughout the retreat, so that even while writing on your own, you are part of a supportive community.

Thresholds: Regulating Risk and Water Contamination in Diné Communities
Teresa Montoya, University of Chicago

Monday, Mar. 7, The Open Talks will be held noon to 1pm, and the Grad Workshops will be held 1 to 3pm. All parts via Zoom.

Abstract:
On July 16, 1979, one of the uranium mill tailings disposal ponds at the United Nuclear Corporation facility near Church Rock, NM failed. The ruptured mill earth dam released approximately 1100 tons of radioactive solid mill waste and 95 million gallons of acidic mine water into the streams and watersheds of nearby Diné (Navajo) communities. This disaster remains the largest singular release of radioactive material in U.S. history. In the spill’s aftermath—decades later and several miles downstream—I have worked alongside Diné grassroots coalitions on the Navajo Nation in their efforts to confront various forms of water contamination from this toxic disaster. Drawing upon ethnographic and archival material, I explore the various regulatory frameworks through which radioactive exposure is legible and by extension, the legal and political avenues that are made possible or denied. Through these activities, I analyze discourses of risk management, regulatory jurisdiction, and chronic exposure by several state agencies and public officials in their response to community concerns of unsafe water. In doing so, I theorize the arbitrary thresholds of toxicity within larger racialized debates over tribal sovereignty, public health disparity, and environmental justice for Diné communities today.

This is a part of the Research Center for Group Dynamics (RCGD) Winter 2022 Series - "Water Ways: New Social Science, Science Studies, and Environmental Approaches to Water"

This is also a part of the class Anthrcul 558 section 002

The University of Michigan M-LEEaD Center is co-sponsoring a virtual event to discuss the bipartisan legislation called the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act. This reform law was designed to modernize the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) and U.S. industrial chemical policy to promote health, but has it lived up to its promise?

Toxic chemicals can harm our health as these substances are present in everyday products (e.g., cleaning products, cookware, housing and infrastructure materials, bedding, toys). Unlike pharmaceuticals, industrial and commercial chemicals are rarely tested for safety before they reach the U.S. market. However, amended TSCA gave the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency new authorities to require manufacturers provide the data needed for risk assessments. People expect the outcomes of implementing our environmental laws to be equitable health protection for the public from environmental harms. Yet, key components of risk evaluations seem complex and thus inaccessible to the public. Our goal is to demystify the process of assessing the science to move toward evidence-based safeguards communities want for public health.

Our virtual event will examine key issues from a series of recent scientific workshops. We will present a case study of applying the principles to treating cancer and non-cancer health effects in similar manners in the risk assessment for the chemical perchloroethylene (PCE). We will explore the use of probabilistic assessments in TSCA risk evaluations. The amended TSCA gave the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency new requirements and authorities. The public health impact points to the need for the U.S. EPA to fully use its new powers to evaluate all risks from hazardous chemicals and set policies which protect health and are accountable to high-risk communities. Preventive actions are urgently needed.

Speakers and discussants include:
* Regina Strong (Office of the Environmental Justice Public Advocate for the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE));
* Wilma Subra (Technical Director, Louisiana Environmental Action Network);
* Wendy Heiger-Bernays, PhD (Clinical Professor, Department of Environmental Health, Boston University);
* Gary Ginsberg, PhD (New York Dept of Health, Center for Environmental Health (CEH));
* Chanese Forté, PhD, MPH (Assistant Research Scientist, University of California, San Francisco, Program on Reproductive Health and the Environment);

The Race & Tech reading group is meeting every Friday at 1 PM this semester.

How to Build a Disaster Proof House (March 16, 2022 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/93151 93151-21700958@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, March 16, 2022 9:00am
Location: 202 S. Thayer
Organized By: Institute for the Humanities

Artist Tracey Snelling’s *How to Build a Disaster Proof House* contemplates the uncertainty, displacement, and disenfranchisement that frames the present day. How do we find a safe place, protected from bad weather and circumstance, in an era of floods, fires, violence, abuse and pandemics?

Snelling finds a route for escape by constructing big and small sculptural worlds, private and public.

Snelling is at U-M this winter term as the current Roman Witt Artist in Residence. During her residency, the Institute for the Humanities Gallery and its Osterman Common Room will function as a “laboratory,” or open studio, where visitors can see the artist’s creative process as the installation evolves, and the rooms change, debunking any presumptive myth of permanence.

Snelling’s pop aesthetic incorporates prefab objects, bright colors, light, video, and sound. The work is disarming in its exuberance, reassuring us there is no such thing as a zombie under the bed, while at the same time, making room to process the very real and unsettling world in which we live.

Through workshops guided by Snelling, U-M students and others from our local and outlying communities will create small-scale rooms or dwellings…”a room of one’s own” reflective of their personal feelings and ideas about home, safety, and dreams.

The experience of crafting together articulates the fundamental importance of our relationship to one another. The myriad of rooms will be displayed ongoing in the Osterman Common Room, as well as becoming part of an installation on wheels, a mobile unit meant to travel throughout town.

The mobile installation contemplates how we measure our sense of belonging, or where we come from, in a world of ongoing transitions and migrations.

Snelling’s project fosters belonging despite all of the different ways we live and co-exist, beyond structures and times of remoteness. Concurrently, the installation embraces our everyday existence and the power of our individual and collective imagination.

In her previous 2017 Institute for the Humanities Gallery exhibition *Here and There*, Snelling pushed up against the challenges of economic inequities, racial biases, and imposed class divisions that often limit the options available to so many people.

“The ongoing lack of affordable health care, systematic racism, class division, economic downturn, and the impacts of climate change all contribute to global poverty and housing issues…," states Snelling. "By working on this project with U-M students and communities regionally, I hope to not only raise awareness of housing precarity but also be responsive together as a community...to the challenges facing our fellow citizens.”

-Amanda Krugliak Arts Curator

The overall project *How To Build a Disaster Proof House* is curated by Amanda Krugiak, Arts Curator and Assistant Director of Arts Programming at the Institute for the Humanities in collaboration with Chrisstina Hamilton, Director of the Roman Witt Residency Program at the Stamps School. WDI to Host Top Diplomat to Vietnam on Building Trust & Taking Risks (March 16, 2022 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/92377 92377-21690682@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, March 16, 2022 2:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: William Davidson Institute

The William Davidson Institute (WDI) will host a discussion with Ted Osius, former U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam and leader of the US-ASEAN Business Council. He will discuss Vietnam’s economic transformation and the skills necessary to succeed in cross-cultural business. The talk, “Building Trust and Taking Risks,” is set for 2 p.m. March 16, via Zoom.

A diplomat for 30 years, Osius served from 2014 to 2017 as U.S. ambassador to Vietnam during the Obama Administration. Leading a team of 900, Osius devised and implemented strategies to deepen economic, security and cultural ties between the two countries. Only the second openly gay career diplomat in U.S. history to achieve the rank of ambassador, Osius went to Vietnam with his husband and two children.

After leaving government, Osius joined Google as its Vice President for Government Affairs and Public Policy at Google Asia-Pacific and currently serves as President of the US-ASEAN Business Council, which represents 170 of the largest American businesses in Southeast Asia through its headquarters in Washington, D.C., and its seven regional offices.

During the talk, Osius will share some of the key insights from his 2021 book “Nothing is Impossible: America’s Reconciliation with Vietnam.” He’ll then discuss his fascinating career, including his time in the foreign service, his transition to Google, and how he landed in his current position at the US-ASEAN Business Council. He’ll talk about the differences in working in the public sector vs. the private sector.

“As a leader in foreign service, private enterprise and nonprofit organizations, Ambassador Osius offers a unique perspective for how building understanding can lead to historic opportunities,” said Amy Gillett, Vice President for Education at WDI who will convene the discussion with Osius.

Participants will have an opportunity to submit questions during the discussion.

Earlier in his career, Osius was a senior advisor at the Albright-Stonebridge Group and Vice President of Fulbright University Vietnam. Osius was associate professor at the National War College and Senior Fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

As a diplomat, Osius served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Jakarta, Indonesia, and Political Minister-Counselor in New Delhi, India. Osius also served as deputy director of the Office of Korean Affairs at the State Department, regional environment officer for Southeast Asia and the Pacific, and senior advisor on Asia and trade to Vice President Al Gore.

Osius earned a Bachelor’s degree from Harvard University, a Master’s degree from Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies, and an Honorary Doctorate from Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education.

How to Build a Disaster Proof House (March 17, 2022 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/93151 93151-21700959@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 17, 2022 9:00am
