The Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science (MPSDS) offers graduate degrees that combine ideas and techniques for producing and analyzing data about humans and our society. Joint us to launch your career in this exciting and rewarding field in which scientists interpret the world through data.

The University of Michigan Program in Survey Methodology was established in 2001 seeking to train future generations of survey and data scientists. In 2021, we changed our name to the Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science. Our curriculum is concerned with a broad set of data sources including survey data, but also including social media posts, sensor data, and administrative records, as well as analytic methods for working with these new data sources. And we bring to data science a focus on data quality — which is not at the center of traditional data science. The new name speaks to what we teach and work on at the intersection of social research and data. The program offers doctorate and master of science degrees and a certificate through the University of Michigan. The program's home is the Institute for Social Research, the world's largest academically-based social science research institute.

Carl Bergstrom presents “The crisis of human collective decision-making in a social media world” (January 31, 2023 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/103361 103361-21807096@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, January 31, 2023 4:00pm
Location: Rackham Graduate School (Horace H.)
Organized By: The Center for the Study of Complex Systems

[WEBINAR LINK BELOW]

Carl Bergstrom is a frequently consulted expert on disinformation, and is professor of evolutionary biology at the University of Washington. (Short bio below.)

This will be a live presentation in the Rackham Amphitheatre followed by a light reception. Registration to attend at the last link below. This event will be livestreamed as a webinar. Scroll to bottom for complete webinar invitation.

This talk is free and open to the public. All welcome. Register at link below.

ABSTRACT: We are a species of information foragers. Individually and collectively, we have evolved to scour our natural and social environments for useful information. Over the past twenty years, society has constructed an information pipeline, the so-called Internet 2.0, to satisfy and profit from our evolved desires for novel information and social connection. What happens when the scale of human communication is radically transformed in the span of a generation, and our mechanisms for creating collective understanding are upended? What happens when this entire process is not stewarded to promote the spread of accurate information, strengthen democracy, and advance human well-being—but rather is to a first approximation engineered by machine learning algorithms to get people to click on advertisements?

In this talk, I’ll look at what social media and information technology more generally are doing to society, consider how we ended up here, and explore some possible suggestions for what we can do about it.

Short Bio

Carl Bergstrom is a Professor of Biology at the University of Washington. Though trained in evolutionary biology and mathematical population genetics, he enjoys working across disciplines and integrating ideas across the span of the natural and social sciences.

The unifying theme running throughout his work is the concept of information. Within biology, he studies how communication evolves and how the process of evolution encodes information in genomes. In the philosophy and sociology of science, he studies how norms and institutions influence scholars’ research strategies and, in turn, our scientific understanding of the world. Within informatics, he studies how citations and other traces of scholarly activity can be used to better navigate the overwhelming volume of scholarly literature. Lately he has become concerned with the spread of disinformation on social networks, and is interested in figuring out what we can do about it.

----

Dr. Bergstrom has published extensively on COVID, and misinformation (and COVID misinformation!) in the New York Times, The Atlantic, Scientific American and innumerable scientific journals. He was also a frequent guest on news programs especially during the early times of the pandemic.

Dr. Bergstrom is also an avid birder (especially corvids) of which he takes beautiful photos.

The adoption of home devices connected to the internet is growing and so are concerns about child physical and digital safety and privacy in the smart home. The U-M community is invited to join us on Zoom for a presentation and Q&A with Kaiwen Sun, U-M School of Information Ph.D. student, as she explores the discrepancies between marketing depictions and device features, and discusses considerations for keeping children safe in the smart home.

Kaiwen Sun’s research focuses on the intersection of children’s privacy and safety and understanding parents’ perceptions and behaviors around privacy and safety in the context of smart home technologies.

This event is open to the U-M community (umich login required) and will be especially relevant to parents, grandparents, guardians, and others who interact with children in their homes.

Register to join the 2023 Privacy@Michigan keynote with Dr. Kirsten Martin on Friday, February 17 at 11 a.m.

Dr. Kirsten Martin for a Privacy@Michigan keynote presentation on privacy expectations on online platforms. Standard approaches to privacy assume individuals relinquish privacy expectations when online or have focused on individuals in relation to a single company. Platforms, such as social media, marketplaces, search engines, etc, are unique in having duties beyond a standard company while also having access to the data of millions of individuals. Dr. Martin will discuss how we need to think about platforms, particularly powerful platforms, as having an obligation to respect the privacy of their users and what that obligation actually entails. Dr. Martin is a University of Michigan College of Engineering alumna.

Dr. Florian Schaub, Assistant Professor of Information, School of Information and Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, College of Engineering, will facilitate Q&A time after the keynote presentation.

This hybrid event will be hosted in person in Forum Hall, on the fourth floor of Palmer Commons, and livestreamed on the Privacy@Michigan events page [https://safecomputing.umich.edu/events/privacy-at-michigan/privacy-day-2023/Keynote-Dr-Martin]

ABOUT THE FILM
Dissecting one of the most influential platforms of the contemporary social media landscape, TikTok Boom examines the algorithmic, socio-political, economic, and cultural influences and impact of the history-making app. This rigorous exploration balances a genuine interest in the TikTok community and its innovative mechanics with a healthy skepticism around the security issues, global political challenges, and racial biases behind the platform. A cast of Gen Z subjects, helmed by influencer Feroza Aziz, remains at its center, making this one of the most needed and empathetic films exploring what it means to be a digital native.

‘Unfriending’: Polarization and Political Disagreement in Social Networks
Monday, March 6, 2023 (3:30 PM – 5:00 PM)

Yanna Krupnikov
Professor of Communication and Media
Faculty Associate, Center for Political Studies
University of Michigan

Stories of polarization in the media have often focused on anecdotes about people who have stopped speaking with friends and family due to political differences — e.g. “unfriended” others due to politics. The possibility that politics has shifted long-term individual relationships has broad social implications. Therefore, we analyze why and when people are most likely to “unfriend.” We argue that political disagreement is often the final step in a general breakdown of a relationship. In other words, when political disagreements occur, people are more likely to “unfriend” those whom they found unpleasant prior to the disagreement. Our results come from four national experiments. The first tracks the relative frequency of “unfriending” over political disagreement versus other types of interactions. The second considers whether it is political disagreement specifically that leads to “unfriending.” The final two studies combine these ideas, tracking the conditions that are most likely to produce “unfriending” in different contexts of political extremity and polarization.

Yanna Krupnikov is Professor of Communication and Media at the University of Michigan. Her work focuses on political communication, in particular attention to news, political expression and social interactions.
