CSEAS Lecture Series. Making Life in the Aftermath of War in Lao PDR (December 2, 2022 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/97582 97582-21794775@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, December 2, 2022 12:00pm
Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: Center for Southeast Asian Studies

Lecture Summary: After the end of the US wars in Southeast Asia, Laos faded from historical and contemporary interest. Eighty million unexploded bombs remain in the soil, from more than 270 million bombs dropped in Laos over a period of nine years (1964‐1973). People in Laos have taken creative, critical, and sometimes deadly measures to extricate themselves from the large quantities of war metal embedded throughout the country. Some have recycled, melted, and transformed war metals into commodities for consumption, while others have collected and displayed empty bomb casings in their homes and businesses as a record of the US air war in Laos. Bringing together the relationship between war and the environment, this talk examines how cluster bomb metals are circulated and consumed, and how such actions shape life-making practices in the war’s aftermath.

CSEAS Lecture Series. Western Cultures as Thailand’s Strategy for Independence (January 20, 2023 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/102842 102842-21805226@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, January 20, 2023 12:00pm
Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: Center for Southeast Asian Studies

In the nineteenth century, the second wave of western imperialism hit Southeast Asia. Unable to resist western military forces, Southeast Asia had to surrender to the power of the West. Only one country, Thailand, survived and is proclaimed on the history pages as the sole country in Southeast Asia that survived Western colonization. How Thailand escaped the unbeatable force of the west was always a discussion in many areas of Southeast Asian Studies. One of the key strategies that many scholars discussed was the reformation of cultures through westernization. The upper class of Siamese society employed western cultures, especially in the performing arts, to transform their traditions as equivalent to the standards of the west. The strength of the nation was presented with these reformed cultures that were the work of East-West innovation by Siamese noblemen. This lecture will clarify how Siamese society had enculturated western cultures prior to the nineteenth century, along with the nineteenth-century accelerated modernization in the performing arts through westernization to stop the colonization by the West.

Location: Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre
Organized By: Michigan Malaysian Students' Association (MiMSA)

For the past decade, the Michigan Malaysian Students’ Association (MiMSA) comes together for Malaysian Cultural Night (MCN): an all-encompassing play and exhibition that underlines the issue of racism, differences in religious values, social identity, and social issues in Malaysia. MCN encapsulates the perceptions that we have of our homeland into a night’s worth of unique cultural experiences, like showcasing multiple traditional dances from different ethnicities in Malaysia. Welcoming all ages with a free-of-charge admission to the event, we present Rojak.

Rojak

Malaysian Cultural Night (2023) tells the story of a marriage-to-be. He’s from East Malaysia. She’s from West Malaysia. Her mother doesn’t approve. How could a distance so short prove to be so daunting for their respective cultures and religions, yet fortified through love? Rojak is a story of how they overcome her mother’s cultural prejudices and come to embody Malaysia’s rich history of multiculturalism.

CSEAS Lecture Series. Refugee Youth Agency in Flux: Active and Passive Waiting in Transit Country Indonesia (February 3, 2023 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/102843 102843-21805230@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 3, 2023 12:00pm
Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: Center for Southeast Asian Studies

*Lecture co-sponsored by the Association of Asian Studies*

For more than two decades, Indonesia has been a transit spot for asylum seekers from Central Asia, South Asia, East Africa, and Southeast Asia while irregularly en route to Australia. Following Australia’s controversial ‘stop the boats’ policy, thousands of refugees, including the young population, must wait longer in Indonesia to get their refugee status processed by UNHCR and to have a chance to resettle in a third country. As a non-signatory state to the 1951 Refugee Convention, Indonesia has a limited legal framework to protect the rights of refugees and asylum seekers, which causes grave precarious conditions for them. Nevertheless, arbitrariness in Indonesia’s legal framework and its flexibility in handling refugees surprisingly has provided a certain level of “informal protection” and opportunities for young refugees to make maneuvers in the fluid arenas. As they wait, the young people also plan, anticipate, negotiate, hustle, play, and rest. This talk will focus on the dynamics of refugee youths’ agency-in-waiting. Professor Masardi explores how young refugees exercise passive and active waiting and what contributing factors catalyze or impede the distribution of their agency.

Speaker Bio
Realisa D Masardi is an assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia. She is the awardee of the prestigious 2022 Gosling-Lim Postdoctoral Fellowship in Southeast Asian Studies. Currently, Professor Masardi is completing her postdoc program at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies and the Department of Anthropology at the University of Michigan. Professor Masardi has been working on the issues of children and young people in several migrants/refugees communities in Southeast Asia, focusing on their identities, access to rights, and agency, particularly on their everyday survival movements. She received her PhD in anthropology at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Her dissertation focuses on the social navigation of independent young refugees from diverse countries facing precarities during transit in Indonesia.

Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month 2023: Kick-Off (Opening Event) (March 9, 2023 6:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/105549 105549-21812110@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 9, 2023 6:30pm
Location: Michigan League
Organized By: Multi Ethnic Student Affairs - MESA

The Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AA&PI HM) at the University of Michigan invites you to celebrate our heritage month opening event! While the month is federally recognized in May, the campus community celebrates the month from mid-March to mid-April to align with the academic calendar. To celebrate the Pacific Islander (or, Oceanian) community, we also host PI Heritage Week dedicated to the histories, heritages, communities, and identities of the Oceanian community.

The kick-off is expected to take place at 6:30 pm on March 9th, 2023 at the Michigan Room in the Michigan League. This year our theme is Generational Change and Healing. Our Planning Committee selected this theme after conversations around wanting to build toward unity and increase self-awareness within our communities. The historical resilience of both the Asian American and Oceanian communities are clear and, despite the violence we have faced and continue to face, we choose instead to center our healing. Our communities often draw from inherited knowledge and wisdom, invoking inspiration and a push for change in the younger generations and generations to come. This heritage month, we hope to reinforce our healing by hosting events and conversations that build, uplift, and challenge our communities.

If you are interested in tabling and showcasing your art at the kick off, please submit the form here: https://forms.gle/QdYmVXdqragyhMdE9

Keep up with us on instagram @AA.PIHM

In the pursuit of both domestic control and international credibility, dictatorships have fueled the rise of “imitation” election observers to validate their flawed polls. The cast of characters includes ambassadors, academics, celebrities, civil servants, corporate executives, journalists, lawyers, members of parliament, public relations consultants, and even former presidents and prime ministers. This lecture addresses the origins, features, and impact of this global phenomenon.

Lee Morgenbesser is an associate professor with the School of Government and International Relations at Griffith University and fellow with the Australian Research Council. His latest book is *The Rise of Sophisticated Authoritarianism in Southeast Asia* (Cambridge University Press, 2020), and he is currently working on a new book tentatively entitled "Faithful Imposters: The Wrecking of International Election Observation." A regular contributor to international media outlets and consultant to international organizations, some of his research has appeared in *Comparative Political Studies*, *Democratization*, *Journal of Democracy*, *Political Studies*, and *The Pacific Review*. In addition, he has been invited to present his research at the Council on Foreign Relations, European Parliament, National Endowment for Democracy, United States Department of State, as well as the United States Agency for International Development, amongst many other institutions. His research areas are authoritarian politics, dictators, democratization, election observation, and Southeast Asian politics.

Politicians in Southeast Asia, as in many other regions, win elections by distributing cash, goods, jobs, projects, and other benefits to supporters, but the ways in which they do this vary tremendously, both across and within countries. "Mobilizing for Elections" presents a new framework for analyzing variation in patronage democracies, focusing on distinct forms of patronage and different networks through which it is distributed. The book draws on an extensive, multi-country, multi-year research effort involving interactions with hundreds of politicians and vote brokers, as well as surveys of voters and political campaigners across the region. - Cambridge University Press, 2022

Edward Aspinall is a Professor in the Department of Political and Social Change, Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs, Australian National University. He researches politics in Southeast Asia, especially Indonesia, with interests in democratization, ethnicity, and clientelism, among other topics.

Paul Hutchcroft is a scholar of comparative and Southeast Asian politics who has written extensively on Philippine politics and political economy. He is Professor of Political and Social Change in the Australian National University’s Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs (of which he was founding director, 2009-2013).

Allen Hicken is Professor of Political Science at U-M where he is also an affiliate at the Center for Political Studies, the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, and WCED. He is currently a Visiting Professor at Singapore Management University in the School of Social Sciences. His work focuses on political institutions, political economy, and policy making with a special focus on Southeast Asia, where he focuses on Thailand and the Philippines, but has also work in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia, and Timor Leste.

CSEAS Lecture Series. History in Ruins: Keramat and Stories of Singapore Islam (March 24, 2023 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/102881 102881-21805279@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 24, 2023 12:00pm

This paper studies oral and textual traditions concerning select Islamic miracle workers (*keramat*) of Singapore. Materials about *keramat* are richly informative about charismatic religious authority, the materiality of miracles, and the saintly mediation of societies, trade, and politics. The history of Singapore’s *keramat* and devotional communities is one interwoven with histories of the Indian Ocean, maritime Sufism, capitalism, colonialism, and post-colonial bureaucracy. The story of *keramat* and Islamic pasts and presents, moreover, is one learned from sacred places and ruins as well as from the caretakers, storytellers, and historians from within devotional communities. Biographies and miracle stories of *keramat* also illuminate the networks of storytellers and scholars involved in compiling chapters of Singapore’s Islamic history, who affirmed the oceanic reach of *keramat* as pivots of widespread networks connecting the eastern and western Islamic world. Keramat were abundant in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Singapore; this paper will focus on some of God’s "friends” in the port city.

This paper examines how the artwork of Tuan Andrew Nguyen registers and counters atmospheric violence of chemical and militaristic warfare. Nguyen probes and unearths how aerial bombings continue to affect and harm communities. Although the artist views atmospheric violence and its aftermath as legacies of colonialism, the paper argues, his persistence with the topics of immolation and reincarnation moves us beyond accepted frameworks and paradigms in colonial studies, such as the self-other relationship, towards the possibilities of contingency from recursivity and of empathy and compassion. Nguyen’s art transfigures the medium of atmosphere to address the physical and mental traumas caused by atmospheric violence.

Speaker Bio
Ben Tran is an associate professor of Asian studies and English at Vanderbilt University. His research examines the politics and aesthetics of twentieth- and twenty-first-century Southeast Asian, Asian American, and Anglophone literatures. As the repercussions of colonialism and decolonization, modern warfare, climate change, and globalization continue to unfold in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Rim, he examines how literary and cultural works depict and resist modernity’s vertiginous transformations.

CSEAS Lecture Series. From the “Bloody Crown” to space travel: Comparing the social imaginaries of Malay and English language novels in Brunei Darussalam (April 7, 2023 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/102883 102883-21805281@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, April 7, 2023 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Center for Southeast Asian Studies

The first Malay language novel in Brunei can be traced back to 1951. Despite a high level of literacy and widespread proficiency in English, it was only in 2009 that the first Bruneian novel in English was published. This lecture will offer a brief overview of Bruneian literature from its origins to the present, exploring the different literary and development trajectories taken by Malay language and Anglophone literature in Brunei. Using Driscoll, Fletcher, and Wilkins’ notion of genre worlds (2022) to map out the social, textual, and industrial conventions that govern the production of literature in Brunei, this lecture will then offer some reflections on how contemporary Bruneian novels in Malay and English have developed diverging social imaginaries about Bruneian identity.

In particular, this lecture will consider how contemporary literature in Malay and English has been influenced by an awareness of representations of Brunei from outside the country and discuss the various narrative and paratextual tactics that have been employed in engagement with the claims of the global imaginary.

The Center for Southeast Asian Studies at the University of Michigan in collaboration with the Graduate Education & Training in Southeast Asian Studies (GETSEA) consortium and Justice in Southeast Asia Lab (JSEALab), is proud to present a screening of Dragon for Sale followed by a discussion with the film’s Director, Producers, and Research Team.

Dragon for Sale documents the Indonesian government’s “10 New Balis” development project in Eastern Indonesia and its attempts to turn Flores and the Komodo Islands into an international tourist destination. The documentary film highlights the darker side of the project’s history, including catastrophic environmental degradation and multiple human rights violations as local populations are forced out of their ancestral homes to make way for resorts and restaurants. The film showcases the resistance movements of local communities striving to create alternative tourism development and conservation plans through an indigenous framework of human-animal kinship and coexistence.

This hybrid event, simulcast in-person at six leading universities across the United States and on Zoom across the globe, is the first international screening of this groundbreaking documentary since its mid-April release in Indonesia. Join us on May 1, 2023, at Weiser Hall 555 at 6:00 pm or on Zoom at http://bit.ly/41Uqw0X.

Light refreshments will be served.

CSEAS Lecture Series. Countering Infrastructures of Impunity with Performance and Creative Arts (September 15, 2023 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/110625 110625-21825177@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, September 15, 2023 12:00pm
Location: Weiser Hall

Drawing on her forthcoming book, *Infrastructures of Impunity*, Elizabeth F. Drexler argues that the creation and persistence of impunity for the perpetrators of the Cold War Indonesian genocide (1965-66) is not only a legal status but also a cultural and social process. Impunity for the initial killings and for subsequent acts of political violence has many elements: bureaucratic, military, legal, political, educational, and affective. Although these elements do not always work at once—at times, some are dormant while others are ascendant—taken together, all elements can be described as a unified entity, a dynamic infrastructure whose existence explains and accounts for the persistence of impunity. For instance, truth-telling, a first step in many responses to state violence, did not undermine the infrastructure but instead bent to it. Creative and artistic responses to revelations about the past, however, have begun to undermine the infrastructure by countering its temporality, affect, social stigmatization and demonstrating its contingency and specific actions, policies and processes that would begin to dismantle it.

ELIZABETH F. DREXLER is an associate professor of anthropology and director of Peace and Justice Studies. She has been working in Indonesia since 1996, focusing on issues of human rights and state violence. Her research projects explore how societies address the legacies of political violence, emphasizing the relationships among institutions, transnational interventions, historical narratives, and contested memories in establishing the rule of law and reconstructing social and political life—or failing to do so. She is particularly concerned with the role that knowledge of past violence, whether acknowledged or denied, plays in the present.

CSEAS Lecture Series. Surviving the State: Struggles for Land and Democracy in Myanmar (September 29, 2023 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/110626 110626-21825178@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, September 29, 2023 12:00pm
Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: Center for Southeast Asian Studies

*Surviving the State* examines environmental justice, land governance, and state-making from the vantage point of small farmers and grassroots activists struggling for land during Myanmar’s democratic turn. During Myanmar’s attempted political transition in the 2010s, land was the basis not only of smallholder livelihoods and national development, but also a critical domain for negotiating citizenship after half a century of authoritarian violence and racialized exclusion. Turning on its head a rich tradition of scholarship that posits land as a tool for state-making or an outlet for state-escape, I argue that land is key to what I call surviving the state, a set of socioecological practices forged through cultivation and dispossession as well as the gendered work of care and connection. This talk will draw on my book project, based on 26 months of participant observation, over 150 interviews, and five participatory research and art projects, to show how embodied histories of state violence shaped ecologies and communities, ultimately undermining reforms that aimed to formalize property, redistribute land and recognize ethnic territory. In the aftermath of Myanmar’s 2021 military coup, these findings demand reimagining land not just as a resource for survival, but also as a site of revolution and healing.

Hilary Faxon is an assistant professor of environmental social science at the University of Montana, currently on leave as a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow in the Department of Food and Resource Economics at the University of Copenhagen. Her research, teaching and public scholarship investigates environment, development and technology with a focus on social justice in the Global South. She also leads a research project on small farmers and big tech in Myanmar and co-lead two interdisciplinary research groups: one focused on digital transformations in property and development, the other on the ethics and practices of algorithmic conservation.

Rodents, including rats and mice, assumed unprecedented roles in medical research and practice during the three decades before and after the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1949. With their lives and deaths, these tiny animals contributed to a rodent revolution in Chinese medicine by producing therapeutic compounds, as well as insights about the relationships among pathogens, drugs, and people. A multispecies perspective on the development of the life sciences helps to dissolve the artificial boundaries of nation and species in which we conventionally frame history.
The welfare of people and lab rodents in China were inextricably connected both to each other and to humans and other animals around the world. Drawing from scientific reports, military records, and oral histories, this paper shows first how people bred and raised animals to produce biological medicines including vaccines and blood sera. Taking malaria as a case study, the paper also shows how researchers in the Vietnam War-era Project 523 used animals to develop and test drugs, connecting the insights of Traditional Chinese Medicine to those of biomedicine.

Welcome to Halaloween: A Muslim Horror Film Festival 2023!

What is Halaloween? Halaloween screens horror films from across the globe that were made by, for, or about Muslims, to understand: “What scares Muslim audiences? Are horror movies halal?”

This year’s 2023 film festival will be in-person and online, screening one film a week for the first half of the month of October, and culminating in two in-person screenings at the State Theatre, on Tuesday October 24th and 31st at 7:30 PM.

The festival is free in person and online–but make sure to reserve tickets! Some films may not be available in certain countries. Films will be unlocked online each week of October, and viewers will have the week to watch each film.

We are inclusive of everyone's film needs: from new horror fans who close their eyes through most scary movies, to those who love the gore–we've got films for everyone! Check the Halaloween Horror Rating in the description of each film for its scariness rating.

*Above and Below the Ground* depicts the Indigenous women activists and punk rock pastors leading Myanmar’s first country-wide environmental movement. When the Myanmar army and a Chinese corporate giant force Indigenous Kachin people off their ancestral land to build the massive Myitsone Dam, Grandmother Lu Ra stands her ground. We see her struggle to save the sacred confluence and build a movement, mentoring young female law student Hkawn Mai. A Kachin punk rock band made of pastors, BLAST, also takes action, transforming their love songs into protest anthems. Our film follows these individuals through their journey of activism, from their underground beginnings during Myanmar’s military junta rule, to supposed “democratic” reforms and a sudden military coup. During such periods of fledgling democracy and dictatorship–in Myanmar and globally–our film asks how ordinary people can use the power of music, community organizing and women’s leadership to challenge authoritarianism.

The in-person portion of GETSEA’s simulcast film screening of *Above and Below the Ground *will be held at the University of Hawaii-Manoa, where Director Emily Hong and Producer Maggie Lemere will hold a discussion following the screening. Twenty other universities will screen the film simultaneously and join the discussion via Zoom.

SPEAKER BIO
Mike Hawkins is a historical and political geographer with a research focus on Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines. His research examines the histories of American empire in the Philippines, the geopolitics of decolonization in Southeast Asia, and the urban geographies of labor in Manila. In 2022, he completed a dissertation at the University of North Carolina that analyzed the changing politics of labor at the Port of Manila across three distinct historical contexts: early American colonial rule, the first two decades after Philippine independence, and the contemporary moment. He is interested in both historical archival methods and ethnographic research. He is currently a lecturer at the University of Michigan.

The 2023 General Election in Thailand resulted in an unexpected victory for the progressive Move Forward Party, ending both General Prayut Chan-o-cha's nine-year premiership and two decades of electoral dominance at the ballot box by parties aligned with former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. However, the complex political maneuvering that followed produced a major political realignment that brought former foes into a partnership while dashing Move Forward's hopes of forming a government. Professor Allen Hicken (University of Michigan), Professor Kanokrat Lertchoosakul (Chulalongkorn University and Harvard-Yenching Insititute) and Mathis Lohatepanont (University of Michigan) will analyze the circumstances that led to this election result and immediate outlook for both the new Srettha Thavisin government and Thailand's political system. This roundtable will be moderated by Professor Dan Slater (University of Michigan).

CREES Noon Lecture. To See and Write Vietnam: Polish Socialist Travelogues and Documentary Photography (November 15, 2023 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/113023 113023-21829908@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, November 15, 2023 12:00pm
Location: Weiser Hall

Literature and documentary photography on decolonization and the postcolonial period played an essential role in forging global socialist connections, a sense of connectivity, and in shaping grassroots imaginaries of socialist anti-colonialism. These discursive moorings brought closer to the audiences in Eastern Europe the far-away conflicts and developments that came with decolonization and life amid war in Southeast Asia. As part of the then-newly established political contacts between Poland and Vietnam, Polish professionals were delegated to Vietnam, leading to a series of books, memoirs, and reportages covering the situation on the ground in Vietnam. In my talk I will analyze the largely forgotten travelogues and documentary photographs that were published in state-socialist Poland by journalists and diplomats who had spent time in Vietnam amid and, subsequently, after unification. This material underlines how literary works and documentary photography dealing with cultural and societal transformation have the power to reveal, obscure, and construct the perception of national liberation struggles.
Rather than negatively casting the work by Monika Warneńska and Jerzy Chociłowski as mere socialist propaganda or treating it as “purely” documentary, my talk will unpack how the postcolonial period—especially after the Second Indochina War—was narrated and understood in these publications and photographs. Vacillating between different genres and political commitments, the travelogues and documentary photography point to shifting boundaries of strongly context-dependent knowledge production. Chronicling prolonged wartime violence and hardship as well as the challenges that came with postcolonial restructuring and social upheaval, this discursive production around the war and post-war period in Vietnam used the power of literary narrative to humanize and translate to another context the experience of a seemingly perennial war without victimizing Vietnamese society.
The talk will also address how literary and visual representations and misrepresentations contribute to or undermine global socialist awareness of decolonization and postcolonialism—whether in line with or against the intentions of the authors and their political sponsors. Merging empathy and political rationale, the travelogues and documentary photographs I discuss warrant asking: Were these overtly political yet empathetic accounts immune to an Orientalizing gaze and framing? Does the empathy towards war-torn Vietnamese society, seemingly based in an ideal of socialist brotherhood, suffice as a tool for self-validation and motivation? How exactly did the Vietnamese version of the story come to matter in these representations?

In 2008, “Save the Thai Temple” was formed by a group of first- and second-generation Thai/American youth to fight for the religious rites of Wat Mongkolratanaram — a Theravada Buddhist temple located in Berkeley, California that has been around for over three decades — against neighbors on an adjacent street complaining that the temple’s religious services, specifically, its merit-making services (or tum boon), were “overly detrimental,” “addictive,” and that the smells of Thai food were “offensive.” Such arguments were predicated upon a heteronormative logic anchored within the South Berkeley neighborhood, pervasively emphasizing the Thai temple, its followers in addition to the Thai/American community as both orientalist and queer in nature. In this way, the complainants drew upon outdated and racist imagery, marking and othering the temple and its community through imperial and dated descriptors of race, gender, and sexuality. Drawing upon the incident, this talk examines the aggressions made by the combative neighbors in addition to the resulting actions taken by Wat Mongkolratanaram and “Save the Thai Temple.” I contend that Thai/America and its religious presence in the U.S. are queer “immigrant acts” that reimagine American domesticity, belonging, and how neighborhoods are formed, realized, and policed. I further look at the actions of the Thai/American community as acts of necessary survival, ultimately queering the racial and sexual undercurrents that inform the compulsory heterosexuality of Berkeley, California as well as notions of Thainess within and beyond the United States.
