The way to begin that writing project is to write. Using prompts in workshop, you will have the opportunity to write the stories you've always wanted to share. There won't be any critiques, so you can turn off your text editor and enjoy the writing process. Free Writing is about exploring ideas and memories. It's about first drafts not finished products. What stories would you like to tell?
Instructor Diane Nash will lead this study group. This study group will meet Wednesdays beginning January 26 through February 23.
Pre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

Story Lab develops executive-level presence and communication skills through storytelling workshops and events. To be an effective leader — at work, in the community, or in your personal life — you must be able to communicate with impact. Often this means telling stories that are meaningful to you and others, and doing so in the rich language and expressive style of a seasoned storyteller. If you can craft and deliver an effective story, you will be better able to convey your value to recruiters, inspire and motivate classmates and colleagues, and influence your audience. At Story Lab, you’ll find an immersive experience and an opportunity to hone your skills in a safe and supportive environment.

This half-day retreat will be led by expert storytellers who will lead you through exercises to build your confidence and realize your unique communication style while celebrating extraordinary displays of leadership on stages large and small.

Who should participate in the retreat:
Students with a strong interest in building storytelling abilities and leadership development. Any level student at any school is welcome.

How to participate in the retreat:

Center for World Performance Studies (CWPS) will host the New Mexico-based Latinx roots music ensemble Lone Piñon on Thursday, February 10, 2021 for an evening performance. Lone Piñon is a New Mexican string band, or “orquesta típica”, whose music celebrates the integrity and diversity of their region's cultural roots. With fiddles, upright bass, guitars, accordions, vihuela, and bilingual vocals, they play a wide spectrum of the traditional music that is at home in New Mexico. In addition, Detroit based singer and guitarist Camilla-Isabella Cantu, from the band Mariachi Feminil, will open the show with a solo set.

In 2014, Lone Piñon was founded as a platform from which to explore and strengthen the oldest sounds of traditional New Mexico string music, sounds that had all but disappeared from daily life. Through relationship with elders, study of field recordings, connections to parallel traditional music and dance revitalization movements in the US and Mexico, and hundreds of local and national performances, they have brought the language of the New Mexico orquesta típica back onto the modern stage, back onto dance floors, into a contemporary aesthetic/artistic conversation, and into the ears of a young generation. The musicians of Lone Piñon learned from elder musicians who instilled in them a respect for continuity and an example of the radicalism, creativity, and cross-cultural solidarity that has always been necessary for musical traditions to adapt and thrive in each generation.

In the past seven years Lone Piñon has played extensively throughout the Southwest and the US and recorded four studio albums: "Trio Nuevomexicano” (2016), "Días Felices," (2017), "Dále Vuelo,”(2019), and “Nuevas Acequias, Río Viejo: Traditional Music of Northern New Mexico”(2020). In August 2018 Lone Piñon was invited by the Library of Congress and the American Folklife Center to Washington DC, where they recorded a concert and an oral history of their work with New Mexican and Mexican musical traditions.

In 2019 they were honored to teach and perform Northern New Mexico fiddle and dance alongside traditional masters from across North America and Europe at Centrum’s Festival of American Fiddle Tunes in Port Townsend, WA. A documentary film about their work with traditional music, “En Donde los Bailadores se Entregan los Corazones,” premiered in 2019 and won several awards at film festivals in the US, Canada, and Mexico. In 2019 the band received the Parsons Award from the American Folklife Center, which brought them back to the Library of Congress in Washington DC in 2020 to study the Library’s collection of field recordings of Northern New Mexican musicians and to record another program of music they have learned and revived from the Juan B. Rael archive.

“Gone to the Village is a unique and powerful documentary, beautifully filmed, of the elaborate funerary rites for the Queen Mother of the Asante in Ghana. Leading Asante scholar Kwasi Ampene directs and narrates with the authority, gaze and sensitivity of a true insider, with stunning footage of the rich cultural traditions of the Asante people. Filmed on location in Kumase during the funeral, we witness traditions that have stubbornly and proudly resisted the onslaught of colonial rule and globalization. Through the film, we learn about the history of the Asante as well as the central role of women in this matriarchal society. The scenes of dance, song, drumming, proverbs, and dress code are of exceptional and exquisite beauty, unprecedented in the African continent.”

TEDxUofM is a university-wide initiative to galvanize the community for an event like no other; filled with inspiration, discovery, and excitement. Borrowing the template from the world-renowned TED conference, TEDxUofM aims to bring a TED-like experience to the University of Michigan. Our vision is to showcase the most fascinating thinkers and doers, the “leaders and best” in Michigan terms, for a stimulating day of presentations, discussions, entertainment, and art that will spark new ideas and opportunities across all disciplines. Our conference will feature 8 speakers, 3 performing groups, and interactive labs/activities for attendees!

Our theme for this year’s conference is SHATTERPROOF. Through a time of fragmentation and dissonance, individuals and communities have showcased an incredible ability to withstand adversity. Resilience is found in all of us despite the size of the challenge. We use our voices to empower each other. We use ideas to drive us forward. We refuse to crack under pressure. We are shatterproof. As we set the stage with this spirit, our goal is for attendees to discover what being shatterproof means to them.

A public keynote presentation from Dr. Tonya Matthews, President and CEO of International African American Museum, will ask curators and other listeners to grapple with an increasing call for bolder conversations in the curation of African American cultural heritage.

Dr. Tonya Matthews, President and CEO of International African American Museum, will ask us to grapple with increasing expectation for bolder conversations in curation of African American cultural heritage – particularly in considerations of descendants and living history. Is centering stewardship of enslaved African Americans’ craftwork at predominantly white institutions cultural appropriation or long-overdue acknowledgement? What are potential triggers of curating a community’s culture from outside of that geography? Is there any cross-learning in working with donors and working with descendants? Matthews will share learnings and current conversation surrounding the creation of the International African American Museum in Charleston, South Carolina as context for being on the frontlines of grappling with the intersection of historical and living history.

The event is free and open to the public. It will also be available via livestream.

This talk is presented in preparation for Hear Me Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield, South Carolina, an upcoming traveling exhibition focused on the work of African American potters in the 19th-century American South and the contemporary artists who have responded to it. About the exhibition: Hear Me Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield, South Carolina  The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (September 9, 2022 – February 5, 2023) Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (March 6, 2023 – July 9, 2023) University of Michigan Museum of Art, Ann Arbor (August 26, 2023 – January 7, 2024) High Museum of Art, Atlanta (February 16, 2024 – May 12, 2024)

Hear Me Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield, South Carolina is an exhibition focused on the work of African American potters in the 19th-century American South and the contemporary artists who have responded to it. Organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the exhibition is a groundbreaking presentation of approximately 60 ceramic objects from Edgefield, South Carolina, a center of ceramic production in the decades before the Civil War. Considered through the lens of recent scholarship in the fields of history, literature, anthropology, diaspora, material culture, and African American studies, these 19th-century wares testify to the artistic ambitions, lived experiences, and material knowledge of enslaved peoples and the realities of slavery in the industrial context.

Hear Me Now offers a novel view of an underrepresented aspect of American enslavement, foregrounding objects made by enslaved potters and bringing this important history to larger audiences. Additionally, it aspires to link past to present, in part by including the work of leading contemporary Black artists who have responded to the Edgefield story, such as Simone Leigh and Woody De Othello, among others.

Adrienne Spinozzi, Assistant Curator of American Decorative Arts in the American Wing at The Met, Ethan Lasser, John Moors Cabot Chair of the Art of the Americas at the MFA, and Jason Young, Associate Professor of History at the University of Michigan are co-curating this project. They are advised and supported by a national board of artists and scholars who offer invaluable input and perspectives, throughout both the planning and development process.

This program is organized in partnership with The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the U-M Department of History with support from the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and the U-M Arts Initiative.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Not Yo' Butterfly
My Long Song of Relocation, Race, Love, and Revolution

By NOBUKO MIYAMOTO
(University of California Press, 2021)

A mold-breaking memoir of Asian American identity, political activism, community, and purpose.
Not Yo’ Butterfly is the intimate and unflinching life story of Nobuko Miyamoto—artist, activist, and mother. Beginning with the harrowing early years of her life as a Japanese American child navigating a fearful west coast during World War II, Miyamoto leads readers into the landscapes that defined the experiences of twentieth-century America and also foregrounds the struggles of people of color who reclaimed their histories, identities, and power through activism and art.
Miyamoto vividly describes her early life in the racialized atmosphere of Hollywood musicals and then her turn toward activism as an Asian American troubadour with the release of A Grain of Sand—considered to be the first Asian American folk album. Her narrative intersects with the stories of Yuri Kochiyama and Grace Lee Boggs, influential in both Asian and Black liberation movements. She tells how her experience of motherhood with an Afro-Asian son, as well as a marriage that intertwined Black and Japanese families and communities, placed her at the nexus of the 1992 Rodney King riots—and how she used art to create interracial solidarity and conciliation.
Through it all, Miyamoto has embraced her identity as an Asian American woman to create an antiracist body of work and a blueprint for empathy and praxis through community art. Her sometimes barbed, often provocative, and always steadfast story is now told.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Nobuko Miyamoto is a third-generation Japanese American songwriter, dance and theater artist, and activist, and is the Artistic Director of Great Leap. Her work has explored ways to reclaim and decolonize our minds, bodies, histories, and communities, using the arts to create social change and solidarity across cultural borders. Two of Nobuko’s albums are part of the Smithsonian Folkways catalog: A Grain of Sand, with Chris Iijima and Charlie Chin, produced by Paredon Records in 1973, and 120,000 Stories, released by Smithsonian Folkways in 2021.

Nobuko Miyamoto is an icon of Asian American music and activism. Since the early 1970s, she has been exploring ways to reclaim and respirit our minds, bodies, histories, and communities, using the arts to create social change and forge solidarity. 120,000 Stories collects powerful new songs, reinterpretations of old ones, and recordings from across her career, including from the seminal 1973 album A Grain of Sand and the band Warriors of the Rainbow. These songs speak to past and present struggles—for self-determination, Black Lives, the environment. They chronicle difficult histories, they celebrate resilient traditions, and most of all, they endeavor to connect communities.

Abstract:
My talk starts with an examination of Padma Nodir Majhi (The Boatman of the Padma), the 1936 novella by Manik Bandopadhaya, to draw out the attention it lavishes on the Padma River. There are the usual anthropomorphic depictions of the river as a capricious woman, bountiful and destructive in turn, but also much in the way of descriptions of the waxing and waning depth of the river, the flow patterns, the color of the water, the dissolved matter in it, the taste of it, and the fishes and other marine life. Each is a chronotope in the literary sense of configuring time, space, and subjectivity in particular ways, but also a ticker of time in the sense of marking the objective state of the river at a particular moment. But again, the anthropomorphic inflections of our language break through with the ticker indicating the beating heart of the river, the river oft described has having a wavering and flickering heart. I examine these tensions between poetic figurations and objective descriptions of the river in the novel, following them across the filmic register to two art films based on the novel, Jago Hua Severa (The Dawn will Break, 1959) and Padma Nodir Majhi (1993) and finally across the scientific register to current studies of the river, with its focus on fluvial channel dynamics, metal content in the river and declining state of fish species. I explore how anthropology inherits this tension with its encounters not just with people but with texts and media by and about them and what anthropology does or can do with this tension to realize what Katherine McKittrick calls living outside of prevailing knowledge systems by reciting and recasting human-environment interactions.

With many stories set on the streets and in the cafes of Ann Arbor, this is a mischievous and fierce collection of lyric essays and prose poems deftly navigating the space between cultures, punctuated by wise children, bossy aunties, unreliable suitors, and an uncertain political landscape that is Asian America. With artwork and stories behind the stories, we will discuss the challenges of writing in these political and pandemic times.

This is an initial collaboration between the Archaeological Legacy Institute and OLLI Out of Town. Modern Native Storytelling through Performance Poetry explores the fascinating world of a dynamic team of indigenous youth writers from the Santa Fe Indian School (SFIS) in New Mexico. Led by teacher and poet Timothy P. McLaughlin, the SFIS Spoken Word Program empowers its student members to create and perform original poems centered in Native philosophies.

Over an eight-year history, the exquisite artistry of this ever-evolving team has been highly recognized through numerous awards, a bevy of media appearances including in The New York Times and on The PBS News Hour, and performance tours throughout the United States and to the Baltic nations in Eastern Europe. This documentary film journeys with the SFIS Spoken Word Team as the core group (including several graduating twelfth graders) prepares and presents a theater production of their finest poems woven with traditional and contemporary song and dance. The young SFIS poets will enchant your heart and enliven your spirit as they continue the ancient tradition of Native storytelling through the powerful new medium of performance poetry.

Pre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the presentation will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

How are our affective encounters with literature, art, and media bound by time, and how are we also—in such encounters—temporally unbound? If literary texts have variously been framed as anticipating, disruptive of, conforming to, producing, inhabiting, and/or responding to axes of time (as “timely,” “untimely,” “ahead of their time,” “nostalgic,” or “avant-garde”), they have likewise been understood as objects of pure fascination, aesthetic experience, and enchantment.

Enchantment, in particular, is frequently understood as an ephemeral experience, unique to the moment of our encounter with the enchanting. We are enchanted by things for brief, passing moments; we sometimes return to a once-enchanting object only to find the glamor it once cast upon us has broken; and at other times, this rediscovery itself—re-encountering a text or encountering it in a new (translated, adapted) form—prompts our re-enchantment.

To mark its 26th anniversary, the University of Michigan Comparative Literature Intra-Student Faculty Forum (CLIFF) organizes a virtual graduate conference that critically and creatively explores the intersection of world literatures, temporalities, and enchantment. We welcomed work that investigates literary and artistic constructions of and responses to notions of temporality and enchantment from aesthetic, historical, industrial, material, technological, speculative, post/colonial, feminist, queer, religious, translational, local and/or global perspectives.
CLIFF 2022 received submissions from graduate students (U-M and beyond) and was open to academic papers from across disciplines that deal with a wide variety of languages and time periods as well as creative and experimental genres.

Michael Allan’s research focuses on debates in world literature, postcolonial studies, literary theory, as well as film and visual culture, primarily in Africa and the Middle East. In both his research and teaching, he bridges textual analysis with social theory, and draws from methods in anthropology, religion, queer theory and area studies. He is the author of In the Shadow of World Literature: Sites of Reading in Colonial Egypt (Princeton 2016, Co-Winner of the MLA Prize for a First Book) and of articles in venues such as PMLA, Modernism/Modernity, Comparative Literature Studies, Early Popular Visual Culture, The International Journal of Middle East Studies, and the Journal of Arabic Literature. He is also a guest editor of a special issue of Comparative Literature (“Reading Secularism: Religion, Literature, Aesthetics”), and with Elisabetta Benigni, an issue of Philological Encounters (“Lingua Franca: Toward a Philology of the Sea”). He is at work on a second book, Picturing the World: The Global Routes of Early Cinema, 1896-1903, which traces the transnational history of camera operators working for the Lumière Brothers film company.

UMMA’s exhibition Watershed features fifteen artists whose work invites us to reflect on issues central to the Great Lakes region and its future. Join us on Saturday, July 16 to hear from Toronto-based artist Bonnie Devine and experience The Gift, her 40-foot mural newly installed in the gallery. Bonnie Devine's artistic practice, which spans installation, painting, and writing, is rooted in a commitment to the storytelling and pictorial traditions that are core to Anishinaabe culture. For Watershed, she painted the mural directly in the gallery. In this special UMMA commission, Devine draws attention to the removal of Anishinaabe people from the Great Lakes region, as well as their erasure from historical narratives.    This program is the first public opportunity to see the completed mural. Devine will be joined in conversation by exhibition curator Jennifer Friess.

Lead support for this exhibition is provided by the U-M Office of the Provost, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Michigan Arts and Culture Council, Susan and Richard Gutow, and the U-M Institute for the Humanities. Additional generous support is provided by the U-M School for Environment and Sustainability, Graham Sustainability Institute, and the Department of English Language and Literature. Special thanks to Margaret Noodin and Michael Zimmerman, Jr. for translating the gallery texts into Anishinaabemowin.

July 30 - August 31, 2022

Parking available near the main entrance. Please sign in and screen yourself in the entryway.

Additional Information: https://myumi.ch/Nmx2j

Beginning Saturday, July 30, the exhibit Shared Humanity will be featured at Silver Maples in Chelsea from the Prison Creative Arts Project’s (PCAP) private collection. The artwork is for sale and will be on display in the 100 Gallery through August 31, 2022.

According to Sarah Unrath, Curator and Arts Programming Coordinator of PCAP, “the exhibition is designed to connect viewer to artist through the wide gamut of their human experiences. We all have dreams, memories, goals, pasts. We all process emotions of anger, joy, grief, nostalgia. We have specially selected works that show a culmination of ways artists in prison have dealt with complex realities of being human.”

The curatorial staff at PCAP worked closely with artists who were formerly incarcerated, and the team at Silver Maples, to select works that would fit the theme of this exhibition and be of interest to the broader audience. Visitors will see works from familiar artists, including Andy Wynkoop, An ArtsyGuy, RIK, Roger (Free-Hand) Stephenson, and many others.

“This exhibition centralizes intersecting themes and multi-faceted layers of what it means to be human. Our hope is to challenge the lens through which the exhibit audience looks at people in prison. Coming out of a season that has worn us thin of human connection, this exhibit presents a unique opportunity to engage in powerful dialogue inspired by the art in Shared Humanity,” says Unrath

The 100 Gallery is open Mon-Fri are 8:30am-5pm and Sat-Sun 10am-2:30pm.
Admission is free and open to the public.

Sales will be conducted in person on Saturday, August 6 with alternative phone sale appointments available: https://myumi.ch/DJ6M5

Sales will be conducted in person on Saturday, August 6 with alternative phone sale appointments available: https://myumi.ch/DJ6M5

The Ways of Water: Art, Activism, and Ecologies Symposium - Day 2 (October 8, 2022 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/99439 99439-21798207@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, October 8, 2022 1:00pm
Location: Museum of Art
Organized By: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)

.

This symposium brings together a diverse group of practitioners, including artists, designers, activists, scholars, scientists, policy analysts, urban planners, and thinkers to discuss what may well be the most important issue of our time: access to clean water and the fight for environmental justice. Held in partnership with the University of Michigan Museum of Art and the Stamps Gallery and building on themes present in the UMMA exhibition  and Stamps Gallery’s LaToya Ruby Frazier: Flint is Family in Three Acts, The Ways of Water symposium continues to unravel the story of water, its critical role, and the way it connects us all.

Diverse practitioners have been invited in order to underscore the need for a multiplicity of voices needed to confront these issues. The Ways of Water symposium brings together perspectives of artists, activists, community members alongside those of scientists and policy makers.

Day 2: Saturday, October 8, 1 – 5 pm Stamps Gallery, 201 South Division Street

1:00 pm: Session 4 — Breaking Waves: Research Around, Through, and With Water Panelists: Heidi Kumao, Kelly Murdoch-Kitt + Denielle Emans, David Porter, and Cedric Taylor

Breaking Waves surveys research and pedagogy across the University of Michigan at the intersection of water, world-building, and environmental justice. Panelists will discuss how water is used in teaching and storytelling to repair broken relationships with water and how water subjects are used as pedagogical tools.

3:00 pm: Session 5 — Water Futures: Decolonization, Access, Systems, and Community Panelists: Daniel Brown, Amber Hasan and Shea Cobb, Branko Kerkez, and Andrea Pierce Moderator: María Arquero de Alarcón

Water Futures explores our understanding of water — as a vital resource for the life of a community, a reservoir of ecological memory, and a public trust or a fundamental human right — as we try to envision creative solutions that can change the course of water’s troubled history. Beyond the strict temporality of crisis and response that so often frames recent public narratives about environmental justice, how can artists, academics, and activists help recontextualize the urgency of ecological action to achieve an equitable water future?

4:30 pm: Closing Remarks

Symposium events are free and open to all. Please contact Jennifer Junkermeier-Khan, Stamps Gallery at jenjkhan@umich.edu for additional information or with questions.

This program is co-presented by Stamps Gallery and UMMA in partnership with the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History and the University of Michigan Library. Location: Rackham Graduate School (Horace H.)
Organized By: University Students Against Rape/Take Back The Night (USAR/TBTN)

Justin Baldoni, filmmaker, actor, and author, will stream in live for an honest conversation about redefining masculinity, and how by challenging traditional roles and traits of masculinity, men will be able to realize their potential as humans and their capacity for connection. You can find out more about Justin’s mission at www.manenough.com.

The event will begin with a conversation between Justin and Standing Tough Against Rape President, Tom Swider, using Justin’s books as a springboard. Man Enough, released in 2021, focuses on Justin’s personal journey of how traditional masculinity affected him. In this book he helps us to investigate what it means to be man enough and in the process what it means to be human.

His second book, Boys Will Be Human, being released October4, 2022, is a real-talk, self-esteem-building guidebook that helps boys ages 11 and up embrace their feelings and fears instead of repress them. This book is geared toward middle schoolers (11+) and their parents, however, anyone can benefit from it. This is the perfect social-emotional learning tool for parents and educators to jump-start conversations about masculinity with the boys in their lives.

We will then open it up to questions from attendees.

*Please note: Justin will be joining the conversation and Q&A portion virtually and he will not be present for the post event reception.

Less than 10% of the U.S. population has served in the military, yet stories of service and movies about military service continue to be written and be popular — and many of these have little to do with the reality of serving in the military.

Eco Soma: Pain and Joy in Speculative Performance Encounters by Petra Kuppers (November 16, 2022 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/99598 99598-21798378@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, November 16, 2022 4:00pm
Location: Lane Hall
Organized By: Institute for Research on Women and Gender

In Eco Soma, Petra Kuppers asks readers to be alert to their own embodied responses to art practice and to pay attention to themselves as active participants in a shared sociocultural world. Reading contemporary performance encounters and artful engagements, this book models a disability culture sensitivity to living in a shared world, oriented toward more socially just futures.

Eco soma methods mix and merge realities on the edges of lived experience and site-specific performance. Kuppers invites us to become moths, sprout gills, listen to our heart’s drum, and take starships into crip time. And fantasy is central to these engagements: feeling/sensing monsters, catastrophes, golden lines, heartbeats, injured sharks, dotted salamanders, kissing mammoths, and more. Kuppers illuminates ecopoetic disability culture perspectives, contending that disabled people and their co-conspirators make art to live in a changing world, in contact with feminist, queer, trans, racialized, and Indigenous art projects. By offering new ways to think, frame, and feel “environments,” Kuppers focuses on art-based methods of envisioning change and argues that disability can offer imaginative ways toward living well and with agency in change, unrest, and challenge.

Traditional somatics teach us how to fine-tune our introspective senses and to open up the world of our own bodies, while eco soma methods extend that attention toward the creative possibilities of the reach between self, others, and the land. Eco Soma proposes an art/life method of sensory tuning to the inside and the outside simultaneously, a method that allows for a wider opening toward ethical cohabitation with human and more-than-human others.

This book is freely available in an open access edition thanks to TOME (Toward an Open Monograph Ecosystem)—a collaboration of the Association of American Universities, the Association of University Presses, and the Association of Research Libraries—and the generous support of the University of Michigan’s College of Literature, Science, and the Arts and the Provost Office.

This custom-built public art installation and immersive film experience uses humor, craft, and a critical lens to question our culture of consumption and convenience — specifically, the enduring effects of our single-use plastics.

Shelves are stocked with thousands of original grocery items meticulously sculpted by hand, all made from discarded single-use plastics organically harvested from streets and garbage dumps. Several times a day, the store transforms into an immersive, dynamic stage for a film in which inventive puppetry, shadow play, and intricate handmade sets tell the darkly comedic and sometimes tender story of how the overabundance of plastic waste we leave behind might be misinterpreted by future generations — and how what we value least may become our most lasting cultural legacy.
