Colloquium: Advances in AI for Sustainability (October 6, 2022 8:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/98341 98341-21796515@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, October 6, 2022 8:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Michigan Institute for Data Science

Come join MIDAS and invited presenters for a series of talks on AI and Sustainability. This event is free and remote.
While infrastructure, both static and dynamic, is the driver of modern global economy, it is also a significant contributor towards global climate change due to the increased emissions. Artificial intelligence (AI) provides a radical framework for mitigating emissions by improving efficiency in static infrastructure, as well as enhancing mobility in transportation through low-carbon transport options and reduction in overall travel time. Through this mini-colloquium, we hope to bring together researchers from varied fields employing AI on these strategies.

Our speakers for the event are:

Dr. Felix Creutzig (https://www.mcc-berlin.net/en/about/team/creutzig-felix.html) - Prof. Dr. Felix Creutzig is head of the working group Land Use, Infrastructures and Transport and Chair of Sustainability Economics at Technische Universität Berlin. He was lead author of the IPCC’s Fifth Assessment Report and lead analyst of the Global Energy Assessment. His research focuses on conceptualizing and quantifying GHG emissions of cities world-wide, assessing opportunities for GHG mitigation of cities world-wide and building models of sustainable urban form and transport.

Dr. Lynn Kaack (https://www.hertie-school.org/en/research/faculty-and-researchers/profile/person/kaack) - Dr. Kaack is Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Public Policy at the Hertie School. Her research and teaching focus on methods from statistics and machine learning to inform climate mitigation policy across the energy sector, and she also has an interest in climate-related AI policy. She is a co-founder and chair of the organization Climate Change AI, and a member of the Austrian Council on Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, which is an advisory board of the Austrian Ministry for Climate Action.

Priya L. Donti (https://priyadonti.com/) - Ms. Donti is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Computer Science Department and the Department of Engineering & Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University, co-advised by Zico Kolter and Inês Azevedo. She is also a co-founder and chair of Climate Change AI, an initiative to catalyze impactful work at the intersection of climate change and machine learning. Her work focuses on machine learning for forecasting, optimization, and control in high-renewables power grids. Specifically, her research explores methods to incorporate the physics and hard constraints associated with electric power systems into deep learning models.

Dr. Moataz Mohamed (https://www.eng.mcmaster.ca/civil/people/faculty/moataz-mohamed#overview) - Dr. Mohamed’s research focuses on the systemic evaluation of transportation networks to achieve sustainable and resilient transportation systems. He is a strong believer of zero-emission, sustainable, resilient transit systems that support the rise of smart communities. His research focuses on the utilization of disruptive technologies in public transit networks with emphasis on electric and autonomous technologies. In particular, he investigates the operational efficiency of disruptive technologies in public transit networks with emphasis on; operational reliability, environmental assessment, and total cost of ownership. His research also investigates the systemic impacts of the transit system on utility grid and energy demand.

Webinar: Improving Beach Management in South Carolina by Defining Piping Plover Foraging Habitats (October 12, 2022 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/99407 99407-21798174@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, October 12, 2022 2:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Graham Sustainability Institute

horebird populations are declining globally in the face of sea level rise, increasing coastal development, and shoreline modifications. The piping plover and red knot have exhibited population declines in recent years, particularly in the intertidal habitats of South Carolina. Recent research has established linkages between benthic prey abundance and foraging activity along South Carolina beaches; however, most of these projects focused on determining impacts from shoreline modification, rather than quantifying habitat characteristics. Identifying characteristics associated with optimal foraging habitat can help inform state and federal permitting and habitat management activities in areas these shorebirds inhabit.

A project team at the ACE Basin Reserve worked with the SC Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to develop a habitat assessment tool for the piping plover and red knot. In this webinar, project lead Andrew Tweel will share methods and outcomes of the project, including a refined list of preferred prey species for piping plovers and a preliminary list for red knots. Tweel will discuss what prey species are important, what makes certain areas foraging hotspots for the piping plover and red knot, and how this information can inform management decisions within South Carolina and across the U.S.

Explainability Is Not the Solution to Structural Challenges to AI in Medicine

Explainability is often treated as a necessary condition for ethical applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in Medicine. In this brief talk I survey some of the structural challenges facing the development and deployment of effective AI systems in health care to illustrate some of the limitations to explainability in addressing these challenges. This talk builds on prior work (London 2019, 2022) to illustrate how ambitions for AI in health care likely require significant changes to key aspects of health systems.

Melissa McCradden, PhD, MHSc
Director of AI in Medicine

On the Inextricability of Explainability from Ethics: Explainable AI does not Ethical AI Make

Explainability is embedded into a plethora of legal, professional, and regulatory guidelines as it is often presumed that an ethical use of AI will require explainable algorithms. There is considerable controversy, however, as to whether post hoc explanations are computationally reliable, their value for decision-making, and the relational implications of their use in shared decision-making. This talk will explore the literature across these domains and argue that while post hoc explainability may be a reasonable technical goal, it should not be offered status as a moral standard by which AI use is judged to be ‘ethical.’

Webinar: Collaborative Science Conversations: BOO! Does Working Across Political Boundaries Scare You? Try Collaborative Science! (November 2, 2022 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/99408 99408-21798175@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, November 2, 2022 3:00pm

Ecosystems don’t care about political boundaries, even if the natural resources within them are managed by multiple entities. Research projects that span political boundaries can often be sticky – decisions are made on long timelines, changes in policy and staff can derail implementation of projects and the tools they produce, and it can be difficult to effectively engage diverse stakeholders so that their perspectives inform the work. Enter: collaborative science. In situations with complex and competing interests, there is a higher likelihood that science will be applied to decision making when problems are tackled with a collaborative science framework. In this webinar, collaborative science project teams will discuss how to work across political boundaries and with different partners to develop shared tools, models, and action plans that will improve ecosystem management.

Collaborative Science Conversations
The NOAA RESTORE Science and NERRS Science Collaborative programs are back at it, teaming up to bring you the voices of project teams from the field through our Collaborative Science Conversations webinar series. These sessions dig into the unique value of collaborative science, what it feels like in practice, and tips and strategies for success.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Student Life Sustainability

Student Life Sustainability is partnering with the Detroit Shakur Squad and Bridge Community Cafe in Ypsilanti to host a film screening on November 28 at 6:30pm. Drinks and treats will be available on site!

The 78 minute film is titled Dope is Death (2020) and was directed by Mia Donovan. The film’s website provides the following description for the film: “The story of how Dr. Mutulu Shakur, stepfather of Tupac Shakur, along with fellow Black Panthers and the Young Lords, combined community health with radical politics to create the first acupuncture detoxification program in America in 1973 - a visionary project eventually deemed too dangerous to exist”. Special guests might follow the screening to speak more about the film.

Dr. Mutulu Shakur, a lifelong activist and former member of the Black Liberation Army, now 72 years-old, has been unjustly imprisoned since 1986. He suffers from life-threatening bone marrow cancer and has finally been granted parole on November 10, 2022, after years of unjust denials.

Should you be interested in joining us for the event, please take a few seconds to fill out the RSVP form, as Bridge Community Cafe has limited capacity: https://forms.gle/mTeUvsYAwtBoU3Rr6

Please feel free to reach out to Cat Diggs if you have any questions about logistics: catdiggs@umich.edu

Lead in the water: What are the educational impacts on Flint students? (November 30, 2022 4:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/101259 101259-21801118@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, November 30, 2022 4:30pm
Location: Weill Hall (Ford School)
Organized By: Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy

In early 2016, the Flint Water Crisis captured national attention - major news outlets reported that the city’s tap water had been contaminated with lead since April of 2014. Given the well-documented detrimental effects of lead exposure in early childhood on cognitive development, many worried that the academic progress of Flint's youngest residents may have been impacted. Over the past few years, important data has become available, allowing researchers to rigorously study and measure effects of the lead water crisis on children in Flint.

Earlier this year, the University of Michigan’s Education Policy Initiative (EPI) produced a working report that linked household water pipe data to educational outcomes. Join the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy and EPI on November 30 to hear key findings on the academic impacts of the Flint Water Crisis 7-8 years later, followed by a conversation to discuss the big picture implications for young people in the community. Facilitated by Ford School Professor Brian Jacob, the conversation features Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha - recognized as one of USA Today’s Women of the Century for her role in uncovering the Flint water crisis and leading recovery effort - alongside Dr. Sam Trejo, Assistant Professor of Sociology at Princeton University and Flint Community Schools Superintendent Kevelin Jones.

Location: Ross School of Business
Organized By: Net Impact Undergrad

Interested in the intersection of Climate Change, Corporate Strategy, Marketing & Advertising Strategy, and one of the biggest business cover-ups of the century?

Please join the graduate and undergraduate chapters of Net Impact and professor Andy Hoffman in welcoming author Geoff Dembicki to discuss his recent book, "The Petroleum Papers: Inside the Far-Right Conspiracy to Cover Up Climate Change."

About the book: "Drawing from hundreds of confidential oil industry documents spanning decades, this explosive work of investigative reporting reveals for the first time the far-right conspiracy that’s stopped the world from preventing the climate crisis.

The Petroleum Papers, investigative journalist Geoff Dembicki tells the story of how the American oil companies that founded the tar sands in Alberta, Canada—home to the third-biggest oil reserves on the planet—ignored warnings about climate devastation as early as 1959. Instead of alerting the world to act on this impending global disaster, Exxon, Koch Industries, Shell and others created ad campaigns saying climate change isn't real and that alternatives to oil are an economic disaster. These companies built a global right-wing echo chamber to ensure tar sands could keep flowing into the U.S., which helped elect Donald Trump and now leaves the Joe Biden administration with a sprawling climate mess."

The event is free and open to the public. Please sign up here: https://cglink.me/2ez/r1898841

Geoff Dembicki is an investigative climate change reporter from Alberta, Canada, home of the largest tar sand deposits in the world. His book Are We Screwed? won the 2018 Green Prize for Sustainable Literature. He is a regular contributor to the Tyee and VICE. He lives in Brooklyn.

Portions of wetlands at the Guana Tolomato Matanzas Reserve in Northeastern Florida are predicted to collapse over the next century due to the onslaught of rising sea levels and major storms. To sustain these vulnerable wetland habitats, scientists and land managers must understand the complex relationships between plant and sediment inputs and surface elevation levels. This 2020 catalyst project developed a Coastal Vulnerability Index to assess what role particular habitats are playing in preventing coastal erosion at the GTM Reserve, and these data have demonstrated how management decisions can help increase or maintain wetland surface elevation. In this webinar, the project team will discuss key findings and share important implications the project will have on communal restoration planning addressing sea level rise in the region.

This custom-built public art installation and immersive film experience uses humor, craft, and a critical lens to question our culture of consumption and convenience — specifically, the enduring effects of our single-use plastics.

Shelves are stocked with thousands of original grocery items meticulously sculpted by hand, all made from discarded single-use plastics organically harvested from streets and garbage dumps. Several times a day, the store transforms into an immersive, dynamic stage for a film in which inventive puppetry, shadow play, and intricate handmade sets tell the darkly comedic and sometimes tender story of how the overabundance of plastic waste we leave behind might be misinterpreted by future generations — and how what we value least may become our most lasting cultural legacy.

Single-use plastics, such as plastic bags, straws, and cutlery, have become a major environmental concern due to their widespread use and presence as a global polluter. These plastics can take hundreds of years to break down, and, in the process, release harmful chemicals into the environment.

During the event, the diverse panel of experts will explore various ways to reduce our reliance on single-use plastics, such as using reusable alternatives, implementing policies to reduce plastic production and consumption, and promoting recycling and proper waste management. The speakers will also discuss the role that individuals, businesses, and governments can play in addressing this issue.

by Robin Frohardt is a custom-built public art installation and immersive film experience that uses humor, craft, and a critical lens to question our culture of consumption and convenience — specifically, the enduring effects of our single-use plastics.

Shelves are stocked with thousands of original items meticulously sculpted by hand — produce and meat, dry goods and toiletries, cakes and sushi rolls — all made from discarded single-use plastics collected from streets and garbage dumps.

The Plastic Bag Store is co-presented by the University Musical Society, the University of Michigan Museum of Art, and the U-M Graham Sustainability Institute, with support from the U-M Arts Initiative.

The Plastic Bag Store (January 30, 2023 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/103461 103461-21807290@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, January 30, 2023 8:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts

Organized By: Student Life Sustainability

Sometimes, the solutions to the climate crisis aren’t complex technological innovations. They can be as personal as your auntie’s renegade community kitchen that she built after a natural disaster, or cooking with your dad, who grew up poor, and taught you how to be resourceful in the kitchen. It can be choosing to share moments of laughter with your loved ones in a time of hardship, or sitting on the porch with your elders and learning from their stories of the past. Too often, climate conversations ignore these narratives of community resourcefulness and creativity in times of adversity.

The Future Is With Our People brings together work from 10+ UM students who live, work, play, love, and hope in the face of uncertainties and injustices. Through these pieces, the artists tell stories about the customs, communities, relationships, and experiences that bring them joy and a drive to demand a better future. As the climate crisis intensifies, we must recognize that solutions often lie within us, our communities, and our cultures. This art exhibit attempts to express just how vital our stories can be in building a sustainable and just future for present and future generations to thrive in.

Join the Student Life Sustainabilty Cultural Organizers and the Center for Campus Involvement for an art exhibition on the first floor of the Union from Feb 13-Feb 24.

Amali Tower is the founder and executive director of Climate Refugees. She has extensive global experience in refugee protection, refugee resettlement and in forced migration and displacement contexts, having worked globally for numerous NGOs, the UN Refugee Agency and the US Refugee Admissions Program. Years of interviewing refugees fleeing conflict afforded her the chance to hear their stories of also fleeing climate change. Through this, Climate Refugees was born. She has conducted country and regional case studies and research in climate-induced displacement contexts, including in urban and camp settings. Her research on climate, conflict and displacement in the Lake Chad Basin in Africa’s Sahel was presented as evidence of loss and damage at COP 26 in Glasgow. Amali serves displaced populations as an experienced defender and her clients as a partner and advisor. She developed her work ethic, world views and deep commitment to forcibly displaced populations through a lived experience of instability, and as an immigrant and migrant. She’s born of that education, life in multiple countries, and also those at Columbia University, where she has a Master of International Affairs focused in Human Rights from the School of International and Public Affairs, and a BA in International Development Studies from UCLA. She resides in New York City.

What impact do transportation and housing choices have on carbon emissions, affordability and livability? Ann Arbor Citizens’ Climate Lobby has assembled a panel to discuss considerations for designing low carbon, highly livable cities.

Panelists:
Jan Culbertson, Senior Principal Emeritus, A3C and Leadership Council Chair, Ann Arbor 2030 District

Each year the Twink Frey Visiting Social Activist (TFVSA) Program brings to CEW+ a social justice activist whose work affects women and recognizes gender equity issues. One goal of the program is to build the capacity and effectiveness of social activists by giving the TFVSA time, space, and support to work on a project that would not be possible under the activist’s usual working circumstances.

The TFVSA program gives the selected TFVSA time for reflection, research, planning, and writing related to their area of activism. Each TFVSA is required to work on a project that will advance their future work and potentially benefit other activists.

If selected, the applicant is invited to reside near campus for up to one month or make intermittent visits to Ann Arbor and work remotely. The 2024 residency will take place during the winter semester with a presentation of their project the following fall semester at the CEW+ Annual Advocacy Symposium. The activist receives a $10,000 stipend to cover their expenses while in Ann Arbor. Travel expenses to and from Ann Arbor are separately reimbursed by the endowment fund.

ELIGIBILITY

The TFVSA program supports activists whose work addresses gender equity issues that affect the lives of women and/or girls. The program defines social justice and equity programs broadly to include activism in such areas as housing, employment, income support, food security, education, violence, child care, health care, and employer benefits like paid sick leave and retirement income.

The Battle Over ESG: Profits, Purpose & Politics (March 21, 2023 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/105430 105430-21811840@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 21, 2023 5:30pm
Location: Ross School of Business
Organized By: Erb Institute / Ross Business School and School for Environment & Sustainability

We are excited to host a timely discussion about ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) at Ross Business School in March, featuring Elizabeth Doty (Director, Erb Corporate Political Responsibility Taskforce); Bennett Freeman (Associate Fellow of Chatham House and former Senior Vice President of Calvert Investments); Vik Khanna (William W. Cook Professor of Law, University of Michigan Law School); and moderated by Erb Institute Faculty Director, Tom Lyon.

As the ESG agenda has gained traction and momentum over the last decade, it has attracted inevitable criticism and a backlash—and now even a backlash to the backlash. Not only is ESG investing under attack, but the battle also extends to the future of corporate responsibility and sustainability more broadly — and in turn the respective roles of business and government— with high stakes for both action and inaction. Some issues are technical and methodological, related to ESG metrics and funds. Other issues are more ideological and political, challenging the notion of business purpose, pitting shareholder primacy against stakeholder capitalism, and raising questions about the appropriate role of corporations in the policy arena. This timely event will explore the drivers of this battle over ESG and offer solutions for moving forward.
