While you might not call the Detroit Observatory if an asteroid hits your car, we can help illuminate the history of asteroid discovery across the 19th century! The Astronomers of U-M's Detroit Observatory were responsible for the discovery and study of many asteroids in our solar system and we are lucky to still have the telescopes and scientific instruments that helped them complete this work. Join us Friday, June 30 for a talks and presentations around our history with asteroids, along with demos of our beautiful 19th century telescopes. We will also be showing images of asteroids and comets taken through our historic Fitz telescope. If weather permits, we will also include night sky observing through our telescopes.

Seeing in Depth programs are a chance to take a closer look at some of the people, places, and sciences from the observatory's history. Talks and presentations feature observatory staff and begin at 8PM. Telescope observing is weather dependent and will begin after sunset.

International Asteroid Day is dedicated to bring public awareness to the hazards of asteroid impacts, crisis communications around asteroid impacts, and the ongoing search for asteroids in our solar system that could be dangerous to Earth.

Arts & Resistance: "Reimagining Mars: From 'Canals' to the Russian Revolution"

Sanil Mittal, LSA Astronomy and Physics; Docent, Judy and Stanley Frankel Detroit Observatory

Thursday, October 12, 2023; 7:00 pm

This talk will dive deep into the so-called "canals" of Mars -- first described in 1877 by the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli -- and how they made Mars a central landscape in many works of fiction in the late 19th and early 20th century. We will see some examples of cultural and artistic interpretation of Mars and the canals in science fiction and the impact of such representations on progressive politics and revolution, primarily in the early and mid 20th century. The talk is presented as part of the LSA Arts & Resistance Theme Semester.

Sanil Mittal is a Junior in LSA majoring in Astronomy and Astrophysics and Interdisciplinary Physics with a minor in Business. He is a student docent at the Detroit observatory and has imaged and processed many of the images taken through the Henry Fitz Telescope. He is also engaged in making astronomy more accessible to the public with his work as the president of the Student Astronomical Society on campus. He has previously given a talk on how Mars has been depicted in Science Fiction, and here he expands on that idea.

As with all Observatory events, the Observatory will be open for tours and observing, weather permitting, following the talk.

Seeing in Depth provide a more intimate and intensive experience than our regular open houses. Registration is limited to 40 guests, which allows everyone to have more time in the dome and at the telescope, if weather permits observing. The event is built around a particular theme which links the history of the Observatory and the University to modern astronomy and observing the heavens.

October's event will focus on the observatory's second director, James Watson. During his time at the observatory, Watson discovered 22 asteroids, making him one of the most successful asteroid finders in history. This program includes a talk about Watson's journey to the 1878 solar eclipse to search for a new planet, discussions on Watson's unique life story, and demonstrations of the Henry Fitz refractor. If weather permits, we will be observing some of the asteroids that Watson discovered using the Fitz refractor.

Please see our visit page (https://detroitobservatory.umich.edu/visit) for more info on parking and future programs.

What are some key moments in U-M history over the past four decades? How did they come about and what might they mean in a larger context? Gary Krenz has hosted Making Michigan the last four years, and before that, he had a career that included time in the Physics Department during U-M's concerted efforts to rebuild the physical sciences; a span in the Office of the Vice President for Research which saw significant efforts in undergraduate research and the engagement of several national research issues; seventeen years in the President's Office, serving presidents and interim presidents from Homer Neal to Mary Sue Coleman; directing the planning for the University's bicentennial; and recently, working to develop the Detroit Observatory as a center for promoting the understanding of U-M history, science, and research. In this talk, he will reflect on themes that emerge from Making Michigan and from his career at U-M. He will also share anecdotes about some of the activities he has been involved with and some of the people he has known.

February Astronomy Nights (February 16, 2024 8:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/117508 117508-21839401@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 16, 2024 8:30pm
Location: Detroit Observatory
Organized By: Bentley Historical Library

Explore the heavens during one of our astronomy nights. Open houses involve presentations on a range of fascinating astronomical phenomena, instruction on the telescopes, and, when weather permits, observing with our beautiful historic Fitz telescope as well as modern supplemental telescopes.

Please note: astronomy events at the Observatory take place even if the weather does not permit observing. We offer unique tour and telescope demos when we can't observe the night sky. Tickets are required, and open house registrations are capped at 100 guests. You can arrive anytime from 8:30 pm to 10 pm. You will be given a time slot for visiting the dome. While you are waiting, check out other features and presentations.

Astronomy Night (March 8, 2024 8:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/118943 118943-21841922@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 8, 2024 8:30pm
Location: Detroit Observatory
Organized By: Bentley Historical Library

Experience history and astronomy at the Detroit Observatory! We are excited to start off Astronomy night with a feature talk from U-M Astronomy Professor Emily Rauscher called Weird and Wacky Weather on Extrasolar Worlds.

Many of the exoplanets that have been found orbiting around nearby stars have atmospheres completely unlike any in our Solar System. The most extreme examples have supersonic winds, clouds made of mineral and metallic dust, and even electrical currents flowing through the gas. Prof. Rauscher will discuss how we learn about these extreme examples of weather, from both observations and computer models.

Talk begins at 8PM and will be followed by tours at 8:30PM through the historic Detroit Observatory and, if weather permits, night sky observing through the historic Fitz Telescope.

You may purchase a ticket for either the talk plus telescope observing or just for telescope observing.
