The Center for World Performance Studies presents Sonya Belaya's multidisciplinary piece *Cognitive Distortions, Ancestral Patterns*, a multidisciplinary performance that uses cognitive distortions to understand the experiences of immigrant women artists as it relates to assimilation, segregation, and mental health care. Alongside research of social work practices with immigrant communities, Belaya documents the expertise of these artists to examine communal care of immigrant women in the United States.

Featuring filmed interviews of immigrant women artists living in New York City, live video projection mixing, movement, and music written for string quartet + jazz quintet. Sonya Belaya in collaboration with Laura Sofía Pérez, featuring Grey McMurray and students at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance.

Sonya Belaya is a Russian-American pianist, singer, composer, and improviser, who divides her time between Michigan and New York. Committed to multiplicity, she is a diverse music-maker invested in vulnerable art and the development of strong, personal collaborations. Her work centers on the integration of womxn’s trauma as musical narrative, with a focus on storytelling as a symbol of powerful vulnerability. Sonya is a 2020-2021 Resident Artist at Roulette Intermedium, made possible by the Jerome Foundation. She has performed as a pianist and singer with members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, New Music Detroit, Wild Up, Michigan Opera Theatre, Russian Renaissance, and Bang on a Can All-Stars. Sonya’s lead project is “Dacha”, an octet flowing freely through influences of creative music, jazz, folk, and contemporary music. The ensemble seeks to preserve and re-contextualize the ancestral memories of Russian folk traditions. Consisting of musicians from diverse music backgrounds, the project uses storytelling and improvisation as a governing principle to transcend these differences for deeper musical dialogue. Dacha was born out of a necessity to find a sense of home and belonging, when Belaya’s mother went missing in 2014. This resulted in the first project, “Songs My Mother Taught Me”, a five song cycle released in May 2019. Belaya released a second album with the ensemble, “Dacha: Live at Roulette”, in September 2020.

Laura Sofía Pérez is an interdisciplinary artist who works in video, film, sound, and installation. She received her MFA in Film/Video from California Institute of the Arts. Her work draws from feminist and avant-garde cinema, phenomenological philosophy, Caribbean Postcolonial theory, and ancestral knowledge. She often works in collaborative settings of experimentation and improvisation with artists of varying disciplines and backgrounds to voice common perspectives on political, cultural, and social issues. Recent artist residencies and programs include La Práctica at Beta-Local, San Juan, Puerto Rico (2019), BAiR Emerging at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Banff, Canada (2020), and the AfA Masterclass: Radical Care with Terike Haapoja (2020).

UMMA and the Penny Stamps Distinguished Speaker Series present Paul M. Farber: Power and Participation in Public Art (November 10, 2022 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/97380 97380-21794496@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, November 10, 2022 5:30pm
Location: Museum of Art

.

Paul M. Farber is Director and Co-Founder of Monument Lab, a Philadelphia-based organization working with artists, students, educators, activists, municipal agencies, and cultural institutions to facilitate critical conversations around the past, present, and future of monuments, approaches to public engagement, and collective memory. He also serves as Senior Research Scholar at the Center for Public Art & Space at the University of Pennsylvania.

A highly collaborative pilot project between Monument Lab and UMMA will encompass curatorial research around the intersection of Michigan history, public art, and monuments, and will culminate in an artist commission for 2022-23 that explores the history of UMMA’s Alumni Memorial Hall as a monument.

Farber and the team at Monument Lab were the inaugural grantees of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s “Monuments Project,” a $250 Million initiative to “transform the way our country’s histories are told in public spaces,” including Monument Lab’s National Monument Audit and the opening of research field offices throughout the United States. Farber has co-curated Monument Lab projects including its original Philadelphia City Hall discovery exhibition (Philadelphia, 2015), citywide public art and history exhibition (Philadelphia, 2017), A Call to Peace (Military Park Newark, 2019), Public Iconographies (Pulitzer Foundation, 2019-2020), and Staying Power (Village of Arts and Humanities, 2021).

Farber's research and curatorial projects explore transnational urban history, cultural memory, and creative approaches to civic engagement. He is author of A Wall of Our Own: An American History of the Berlin Wall (University of North Carolina Press, 2020) which tells the untold story of a group of American artists and writers (Leonard Freed, Angela Davis, Shinkichi Tajiri, and Audre Lorde) who found refuge along the Berlin Wall and in Cold War Germany in order to confront political divisions back home in the United States. He is also co-editor with Ken Lum of Monument Lab: Creative Speculations for Philadelphia (Temple University Press, 2019), a public art and history handbook designed to generate new critical ways of thinking about and building monuments.

In addition to his work with Monument Lab, Farber served as curator for the inaugural Artist-in-Residence Program at the Office of the District Attorney of Philadelphia (2020), keynote speaker for the Americans for the Arts national conference (2020), and Scholar in Residence at Mural Arts Philadelphia (2015–2017). He serves as an advisor to numerous monument and memorial projects including for the City of Newark and the Emmett Till Interpretive Center.

This event is in-person at the Michigan Theater. For more information, visit the Penny Stamps Speaker Series.

Peter Brook's The Empty Space discussion (November 29, 2022 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/101482 101482-21801397@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, November 29, 2022 11:00am
Location: Haven Hall
Organized By: Drama and Performance Interest Group

Please join us for a discussion of "The Deadly Theatre," the first chapter of The Empty Space by Peter Brook, the influential director who passed away this summer.

Here is a description of the book from Simon & Schuster:

"From director and cofounder of the Royal Shakespeare Company Peter Brook, The Empty Space is a timeless analysis of theatre from the most influential stage director of the twentieth century.

As relevant as when it was first published in 1968, groundbreaking director and cofounder of the Royal Shakespeare Company Peter Brook draws on a life in love with the stage to explore the issues facing a theatrical performance—of any scale. He describes important developments in theatre from the last century, as well as smaller scale events, from productions by Stanislavsky to the rise of Method Acting, from Brecht’s revolutionary alienation technique to the free form happenings of the 1960s, and from the different styles of such great Shakespearean actors as John Gielgud and Paul Scofield to a joyous impromptu performance in the burnt-out shell of the Hamburg Opera just after the war.

Passionate, unconventional, and fascinating, this book shows how theatre defies rules, builds and shatters illusions, and creates lasting memories for its audiences."

RSVP for this event by emailing me at dhigbeew@umich.edu. PDFs of the book will be sent to those who RSVP.

Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies

This talk focuses on two important prescriptive manuals for training household singer-actors, one by Li Yu (1671) and one by Xu Dachun (1748) to ask how and why the singing voice was conceptualized as having a gender in the seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Chinese discourse on Kunqu opera. Dr. Zeitlin’s talk will attempt to chart a historical change in vocal assumptions from the 1670s to the 1740s, which takes into account the major shifts in performing norms and conventions that occurred during this period: the reopening of public urban theaters by 1700 and the Yongzheng era reforms that removed female entertainers from the imperial court.

Judith T. Zeitlin is William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor in East Asian Languages and Civilizations and Theater and Performance Studies at the University of Chicago. Her many publications related to Chinese opera, visual culture, and music include "Performing Images: Opera in Chinese Visual Culture," co-edited with Yuhang Li (2014) and "The Voice as Something More: Essays Toward Materiality," co-edited with Martha Feldman (2019). She is currently completing a book on the culture of musical entertainment in early modern China, which focuses on voice, text, and instrument.

Malaysian Cultural Night 2023 (January 29, 2023 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/102008 102008-21803174@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, January 29, 2023 6:00pm
Location: Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre
Organized By: Michigan Malaysian Students' Association (MiMSA)

For the past decade, the Michigan Malaysian Students’ Association (MiMSA) comes together for Malaysian Cultural Night (MCN): an all-encompassing play and exhibition that underlines the issue of racism, differences in religious values, social identity, and social issues in Malaysia. MCN encapsulates the perceptions that we have of our homeland into a night’s worth of unique cultural experiences, like showcasing multiple traditional dances from different ethnicities in Malaysia. Welcoming all ages with a free-of-charge admission to the event, we present Rojak.

Rojak

Malaysian Cultural Night (2023) tells the story of a marriage-to-be. He’s from East Malaysia. She’s from West Malaysia. Her mother doesn’t approve. How could a distance so short prove to be so daunting for their respective cultures and religions, yet fortified through love? Rojak is a story of how they overcome her mother’s cultural prejudices and come to embody Malaysia’s rich history of multiculturalism.

A collaboration of Detroit Public Theatre & the Prison Creative Arts Project

More about the film:
MTV Documentary Films Presents *Angola Do You Hear Us? Voices From a Plantation Prison* (formerly known as A Peculiar Silence) tells the story of playwright Liza Jessie Peterson, whose acclaimed play *The Peculiar Patriot* was shut down mid-performance at the Louisiana State Penitentiary, commonly known as Angola Prison.

Directed and edited by Cinque Northern, produced by Catherine Gund, featuring Liza Jessie Peterson and Norris Henderson (Peterson and Henderson are also Executive Producers), the film examines how one woman's play challenged the country's largest plantation prison and impacted the incarcerated men long after the record of her visit was erased by the institution's administration.

More about the play:
LaQuanda ‘Betsy’ Ross knows a lot about the New York State Penitentiary system. Her regular visits to loved ones in various upstate institutions have made her quite the expert and a self-proclaimed “Peculiar Patriot." In-between neighborhood updates and gossip, Betsy educates herself and the audience on the systemic inequity within America’s prison complex system and its effect on those behind bars, as well as their family and friends.

Written and performed by the incomparable Liza Jessie Peterson, The Peculiar Patriot was inspired by her comprehensive and extensive work in prisons, including on Riker’s Island. Peterson’s tour de force solo piece is an important, funny, and profound investigative look into America’s criminal justice system.

Kathakali Performance (February 11, 2023 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/114240 114240-21832551@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, February 11, 2023 7:00pm

Famed South Indian Kathakali dancer Manoj Kumar from the premier tertiary conservatory of South Indian music and dance, Kerala Kalamandalam, will offer a solo performance in full make up and costumes with an introduction from Kathakali scholar V. Kaladharan. Kumar will appear on the stage as the omnipotent Ravana, the king of Srilanka. This anti-hero in the great Indian Epic, Ramayana, recollects the major milestones in his life right from his childhood days. Q&A following the performance.

Part of the U-M Fall 2023 Festival of Asian Music
https://smtd.umich.edu/asian-music-festival/

Kathakali, literally story-play, is a highly evolved dance-theatre tradition that originated in Kerala, south India, in the 17th century. It is an amazing amalgam of dance, drama, and music; vocal and instrumental. The facial makeup & costuming of Kathakali are both stylized and semi-realistic. The ornamentations in Kathakali are intricate, intriguing and incredibly elaborate. It takes three to four hours for a Kathakali actor to transform himself/herself into a Kathakali character. Traditionally Kathakali plays dramatize stories from the great Indian epics: the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Srimad Bhagawatha.

Free and open to the public; Presented by the Center for World Performance Studies with support from the School of Music, Theatre & Dance, the Center for South Asian Studies, and the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.

Location: Michigan League
Organized By: LSA Student Government

Join LSA Student Government and other sponsors in a free film screening, Americanish (2021), directed and co-written by Iman Zawahry, on Friday, March 17th, from 6:00-8:30 in the Hussey Room in the Michigan League. Viewers are invited into the home and lives of three marriage-aged women as they navigate the often turbulent waters of romance, culture, career, and family. Americanish delves into the complexity of trying to both honor and break from cultural traditions while balancing personal values and career goals in a society that does not always accommodate both. The film highlights different layers of womanhood intersecting with cultural and societal expectations. Following the film's screening, a panel of the director Iman Zawahry and lead actress and co-writer Aizzah Fatima will take place and have a Q&A portion. Snacks and refreshments will be provided! This event is a MESA AA&PI Heritage Month event.

That Brown Show [TBS] brings together premier South Asian performance groups at the University of Michigan. Together through a variety of music and dance styles, we hope to promote a rich and unique culture, create a common stage for performance, and further develop an enriching community around South Asian art forms and performance. This year, TBS will feature Michigan Bhangra Team, Michigan Mayuri, Michigan WolveRAAS, Michigan Taal, and Michigan Sahānā Music & Dance. We want to show the community what we all have spent months creating, learning, and refining through an evening of spectacular performances on one stage. Most of all, we want the community to join us in our journey through the South Asian performing arts.

On May 18, 2023, BHS will feature our fourth annual evening of storytelling with the theme of Big Hearted Stories: On Purpose. Storytellers will share true stories about discovering purpose in their lives after experiencing the grief of losing loved ones, unspoken love and respect of a father, accessibility needs of a child, responsibility of caring for an elder, and growth of opportunities over a long career. Special guest Ari Weinzweig, co-founding partner of Zingerman's Community of Businesses, will talk about his journey from washing dishes to philanthropic entrepreneurship. Vic Strecher will again be our emcee. It will be an evening of stories that will fill your heart and inspire your soul.

The goal of the annual Big Hearts for Seniors event is to raise awareness and funds for six Michigan Medicine organizations that support older adults in our community:
• Ann Arbor Meals on Wheels
• Housing Bureau for Seniors

The goal of *In And On Our Own Terms* is for each artist to tell a story from their own experience that would not typically be part of the broader narrative about mass incarceration.

The goal is not to define any artist by the experience of having been incarcerated, but rather to amplify a story that only that artist can tell—a story that is important to the artist to tell, and an opportunity to use the medium of theatre to share it with the community.

From the celebrated and award-winning composer Dave Malloy comes Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, an electropop opera based on a scandalous slice of Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace. Young and impulsive, Natasha Rostova arrives in Moscow to await the return of her fiancé from the front lines. When she falls under the spell of the roguish Anatole, it is up to Pierre, a family friend in the middle of an existential crisis, to pick up the pieces of her shattered reputation. Following a critically exalted premiere at Ars Nova in New York City, a subsequent Off-Broadway transfer, and an acclaimed run on Broadway, this award-winning musical expands the possibilities for the genre with its daring score and bold storytelling.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: School of Music, Theatre & Dance

Little Amal, the internationally celebrated 12-foot-tall puppet of a 10-year-old Syrian refugee girl who visited New York City last fall, will stop by Ann Arbor this September as part of an epic 6,000-mile journey across the United States. An international symbol of human rights, especially those of refugees, Amal is walking across the United States to learn firsthand about a country that has long been a refuge for those seeking safety and opportunity – but is simultaneously struggling with how to manage long-standing issues related to immigration. Amal’s engagement with hundreds of communities across the country will help spark meaningful conversations to help us better understand who we are and where we come from.

Along her epic cross-country 6,000-mile journey, she will meet with a wide range of displaced and disenfranchised people, including North American Indigenous people, communities of color whose contributions to the story of America have historically been overlooked, recent migrants, and the ancestors of earlier immigrants, to learn more about the stories of the American people who established roots in these communities over the last hundred-plus years.

Locations/Times:
The afternoon gathering begins on the south side of N. University at Thayer Street at 3PM, and the walk commences at 3:30PM.

The evening gathering begins at 6:30PM at the Ann Arbor Farmers Market in Kerrytown, and the walk commences at 7PM.

The story of what it means to be an American in every sense of the word except for one: on paper. This 85-minute, solo performance piece chronicles the story of Anner Cividanis’ journey of living his whole life in the United States as an undocumented American. The play captures the desperation that DACAmented individuals feel when considering the very limited options of adjustment of status, by being forced to navigate through a broken U.S. Immigration System. The play examines the mental, emotional, and psychological hardship one man has to endure in order to secure his livelihood in the only home he has known: Los Angeles.
