Location: Hill Auditorium
Organized By: University Musical Society (UMS)

The UMS Choral Union invites you to take part in the return of Summer Sings. Just come as you are to this no-audition, no-performance evening of memorable music-making!

As many as 250 singers from southeastern Michigan, northern Ohio, and Canada have joined each session in singing through great choral repertoire with some of the nation’s most respected choral conductors and outstanding soloists.

This year, Summer Sings returns to join the community together over a rhythmic masterpiece, Carmina Burana.

You probably know the first five chords of Carl Orff’s legendary Carmina Burana as you’ve likely heard these notes in many forms of popular entertainment, though you may not have heard the story of what inspired them: the scandalous writings of some mischievous monks and a revolutionary composer who turned those musings into music.

UMS’s Choral Union Music Director and Conductor Scott Hanoian prepares the Grammy Award-winning chorus in performances with the world’s finest orchestras and conductors and will help direct the evening of community engagement. Portions of the score will be rehearsed during the first half, followed by a break for refreshments, and then singers re-convene to sing through the entire work.

Please arrive early at 6:30 pm for registration.

Performing songs from their 2023 Grammy-winning Empire Central, the genre-defying super-band Snarky Puppy returns to Ann Arbor for its third UMS appearance and its first since 2019.

Empire Central is an homage to Dallas, with many of its songs inspired by the collective’s time in the city. And like the city, the eclectic 19-piece electric ensemble is big and bold, chill and laid back, rooted in its native culture while reaching forward. Led by Michael League on bass, Snarky Puppy was formed in 2004 by 10 friends who were enrolled in the jazz program at the University of North Texas. With 13 albums in 18 years that have garnered four Grammy Awards, Snarky Puppy has attracted international fandom for its detailed arrangements of fetching melodies, texturally layered harmonies, exciting solos, ear-candy synth effects, and propulsive beats. Its distinctly Southwestern influences — blues, hard rock, classic soul, modern gospel, percolating funk, new tech, fusion, and jazz — never sound derivative but conjure music that’s fresh and original.

Shakti: 50th Anniversary Tour
Feat. John McLaughlin, Zakir Hussain, & Shankar Mahadevan
with very special guest Béla Fleck

Following the Summer 2023 release of This Moment – their first new studio album in 46 years – revolutionary ensemble Shakti will continue to discover and explore the musical common ground bridging East and West on an exclusive US tour marking the 50th anniversary since their first concerts.

Born in the mid-1970s out of the deep artistic and spiritual connection bonding British guitarist John McLaughlin and Indian tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain, Shakti’s cross-cultural musical conversation dissolved boundaries with uncommon passion, grace, and dexterity, awakening subsequent generations of musicians to the possibilities of new creative approaches in the process. The unprecedented transcontinental collaboration forged the template for what is often called “world music.” Together they honed an ecstatic new fusion, blazing uncharted pathways and demonstrating the potential of such global composites to generations of musicians and fans around the world.

Alongside McLaughlin and Hussain, today’s Shakti features vocalist Shankar Mahadevan, violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan, and percussionist Selvaganesh Vinayakram (son of original Shakti ghatam player T.H. “Vikku” Vinayakram). Joining Shakti will be another performer dedicated to intermingling and transcending genres: banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck, who will open the performances with a solo set.

Renée Fleming’s interests and accomplishments are so wide-ranging that her biography reads like a mashup of several different overachievers all rolled into one.

One of the most highly acclaimed singers of our time, she is a National Medal of Arts recipient who has sung for momentous occasions ranging from the memorial service at Ground Zero after 9/11 and the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony to the soundtrack for The Lord of the Rings and the Super Bowl, where she was the first classical artist ever to sing the National Anthem.

Her most recent recording, which focused on nature as both inspiration and casualty of humans, was awarded the 2023 Grammy for Best Classical Solo Vocal Album. Outside of her singing career, she has become a leading advocate for research at the intersection of arts, health, and neuroscience, launching a collaboration between the Kennedy Center and the National Institutes for Health and exploring the power of music as it relates to health and the brain. She is an advocate for literacy, designed her own fragrance, and is the eponym for both a dessert created by master chef Daniel Boulud and an iris.

At the center of it all is her stunning voice, on display in Hill Auditorium for the first time since 2011 in a recital with pianist Inon Barnatan, who will also perform at UMS with the Jerusalem Quartet a week later. “Fleming has consistent mastery over the entire range, yet each part has its own distinctive color, like a river that gleams differently when the sun catches different parts of it.” (The Sydney Morning Herald)

DruidO’Casey: The Plough and the Stars (October 18, 2023 7:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/109615 109615-21822406@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, October 18, 2023 7:30am
Location: Power Center for the Performing Arts
Organized By: University Musical Society (UMS)

Sean O’Casey’s The Plough and the Stars is a gripping portrayal of the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin, Ireland, a six-day conflict led by Irish Republicans who were attempting to establish an independent Ireland while the British were preoccupied by World War I. Set in a tenement house, the story follows the lives of ordinary citizens who are caught up in the tumultuous events of the rebellion. The tenement’s residents grapple with their own loyalties and beliefs as the rebellion unfolds, with their romanticized ideals clashing with the harsh realities of war.

Through vivid dialogue and dramatic events, O’Casey masterfully portrays their struggles, dreams, and disillusionment in the face of political upheaval, challenging romanticized notions of heroism while highlighting the often-unseen sacrifices made by ordinary individuals. Director Garry Hynes “deliver[s] a Plough that leaves room for all of the fun to be had…while shifting elegantly into an expressionistic mode. A significant achievement by Hynes and her superb ensemble.” (The Irish Examiner)

In The Shadow of a Gunman, Sean O’Casey explores the Irish War of Independence (1920-21). Set in a tenement house in Dublin, the story centers around the character of Donal Davoren, a struggling poet mistaken for an Irish Republican Army gunman by his neighbors, who approach him with a mixture of fear and intrigue. As the rumor of Davoren’s affiliation spreads, he finds himself caught between his desire to maintain his romantic image as a poet and the harsh reality of being seen as a revolutionary. The tension escalates when an actual IRA gunman arrives, forcing Davoren to confront the consequences of his assumed identity.

“O’Casey’s dramatic toolbag is stuffed with the conventions of his time: comic double acts, maudlin heroines, tragic twists, malaproprisms, and melodrama” (The Irish Examiner) as he highlights the profound impact of political unrest on ordinary lives.

This performance is part of Seán O’Casey’s Dublin Trilogy, which includes The Plough and the Stars, The Shadow of a Gunman, and Juno and the Paycock. Get tickets to all three performances and save.

The Irish Civil War of 1922-23 provides a backdrop of political unrest and social upheaval that amplifies the struggles of the working-class characters in Sean O’Casey’s Juno and the Paycock. The Boyle family lives in squalor, with Captain Jack’s laziness and alcoholism contributing to their financial struggles while his wife Juno works tirelessly to provide for the family. When the family receives news of an unexpected inheritance, their hopes rise and they dream of a better life. However, their newfound fortune soon proves illusory, and their lives become entangled in a web of betrayal, deceit, and tragedy.

With humor and tragedy, O’Casey depicts the harsh realities of life in a war-torn society and the impact of ideological divides within a single family. Of the first performances of DruidO’Casey in Galway, Ireland in July, The Arts Review observed, “To see one of O’Casey’s classics is to be astonished at the manner in which he courageously articulated, challenged, and shared an emerging Ireland. To see all three together is to go deeper and ask how far have we traveled, or failed to? Many of the questions raised by O’Casey prov[e] prescient, and alas, still relevant.”

A century ago, Ireland was reborn in the fires of rebellion and war. The playwright Sean O’Casey bore witness to these seismic events and dramatized them as the Dublin Trilogy, three great works of Irish theater full of history, humanity, and humor, all written in the immediate aftermath of the tumultuous period.

Druid will weave O’Casey’s three plays into an epic theatrical event of conflict, national identity, and the human toll of war: DruidO’Casey. The three plays will be presented in only two US cities — New York and Ann Arbor.

Directed by Tony Award winner Garry Hynes, a single company of 18 actors will perform all three plays, drawing parallels between an Irish past and an international present. Each play will be presented twice in Ann Arbor, with the opportunity to view each work individually, across the week, or as a single immersive experience. Experience one play, or experience them all!

Carlos Miguel Prieto, celebrated as a rising star both domestically and abroad, was named 2019 Conductor of the Year by Musical America and is the foremost Mexican conductor of his generation. He serves as artistic director of México City’s Minería Symphony, which was founded in the 1970s and is widely regarded as the leading musical institution in México — one that regularly supports and programs Mexican composers. Housed at the Academia de Música del Palacio de Minería, the name honors the period from the 18th century when mining was one of the region’s most important economic activities.

Joining the Minería Symphony in their first Ann Arbor performance is Latin Grammy Award-winning pianist/composer Gabriela Montero, a frequent Prieto collaborator. Montero, known for her passionate virtuosity and brilliant improvisation, performs her first piano concerto, a soulful work showing the complexities of South American life. “Montero’s playing has everything: crackling rhythmic brio, subtle shadings, steely power in climactic moments, soulful lyricism in the ruminative passages and, best of all, unsentimental expressivity.” (The New York Times)

The concert includes works by two Mexican composers: Carlos Chávez (1899- 1978), an ethnomusicologist whose Sinfonía India reflects the harmonies, rhythms, melodies, and instruments of the Indian cultures of Mexico, and Silvestre Revueltas, whose concert suite La noche de los mayas depicts Mexico’s preColumbian heritage and is drawn from his highly-regarded 1939 film score.

Since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the world has become more attuned to the incredible bravery, resilience, and determination of the Ukrainian people. The folk-punk quartet DakhaBrakha embraces and reflects the fundamental elements of sound and soul, creating a world of unexpected new music. The group’s name is original, outstanding, and authentic at the same time, meaning “give/take” in the old Ukrainian language and signaling the group’s unique brand of musical “ethno-chaos.”

Created in 2004 by an avant-garde theater director, their shows include scenic effects, traditional instrumentation, and an astonishingly powerful and uncompromising vocal range that creates an exuberant, transnational sound rooted in Ukrainian culture. “Musically, the whole experience is a riotous explosion of color and reinvention. The classic Eastern European folk base is there, with belting, complex, and hypnotic harmonies.” (Hackney Citizen, UK)

Are We Dreaming the Same Dream? is an electrifying concert experience that blurs the lines between classical, jazz, and contemporary music.

Ann Arbor’s own Akropolis Reed Quintet — composed of U-M Alumni on clarinet, oboe, saxophone, bass clarinet, and bassoon — joins forces with Grammy-nominated composer and jazz pianist Pascal Le Boeuf and celebrated drummer Christian Euman. Le Boeuf’s composition is inspired by his musical “ancestors” — Geri Allen, Dave Brubeck, Charles Mingus, and Leonard Bernstein — representing a variety of perspectives concerning the unity of the American experience. His composition asks: Are we really dreaming the same American dream, or is our consumer culture overshadowing our own sense of belonging?

Founded in 2009, the Akropolis Reed Quintet has won seven national chamber music prizes, including the 2014 Fischoff Gold Medal, and has premiered and commissioned over 150 works by living artists and composers. “Infallible musicality and huge vitality” (Fanfare Magazine)

In the 1970s, Fereydoun Farrokhzad was a significant cultural icon, a sex symbol, and a chart-topping pop singer whose music and television programs were heard and viewed by millions of Iranians. A decade later, living in political exile in Germany, he still performed to sold-out audiences in Europe. That changed on August 7, 1992, when he was found brutally murdered in his apartment in Bonn. Neighbors said his dogs had been barking for two nights.

The murder, still unsolved, serves as the starting point for this new work by British-Iranian theater maker Javaad Alipoor, whose The Believers Are But Brothers was featured in the 2020 No Safety Net theater festival. Selected as one of The Guardian’s Top Theatre Shows of 2022, Things Hidden “gleefully mashes up genres, smashing together the quiet authority of the murder mystery podcast, the intimacy of autobiographical storytelling, and the visual spectacle of multimedia performance — while simultaneously deconstructing each of these forms.” (The Guardian)

Ukulele master Jake Shimabukuro brings joy to the world this holiday season with Holidays in Hawai’i.

Known for his lightning-fast fingers, Shimabukuro saw his career skyrocket two decades ago when his video of George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” was posted on YouTube without his knowledge and became one of the first videos to go viral on the platform. His seemingly limitless vocabulary, on perhaps the unlikeliest of instruments, has brought new appreciation to the four-string instrument, causing many to call him “the Jimi Hendrix of the ukulele.” Beloved for his open, magical, and transcendent connection with audiences, Shimabukuro draws on a vibrant catalog of holiday classics for this return appearance, performing alongside Jackson Waldhoff (bass), and other musicians to be announced.

Organized By: University Musical Society (UMS)

Two of today’s most celebrated artists join forces in an innovative program for two pianos that celebrates the music of George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, and more.

Born of a serendipitous encounter where the two musicians discovered their common love for two-piano music and the Gershwin era, this event showcases each artist’s unique gifts for creativity, virtuosity, and joy. Feinstein is one of the leading authorities on the Great American Songbook, and he and Thibaudet dig deep into the extraordinary heritage of music from the 20th century that straddles the worlds of classical and popular, connecting the two with rich anecdotes and incredible musicality. The concert features piano duos, solos, and vocals, with Gershwin’s beloved Rhapsody in Blue, arranged for two pianos, as a centerpiece.

An exceptional pianist with an original and probing mind who takes no note for granted.” (Los Angeles Times)

Hélène Grimaud is a deeply passionate and committed musical artist with multiple talents that extend far beyond the instrument she plays with such poetic expression and peerless technical control. A committed wildlife conservationist, she is also a compassionate human rights activist and a writer; but it is through her thoughtful and tenderly expressive music-making that she most deeply touches the emotions of audiences. After her UMS debut in 2015 as featured soloist with the Rotterdam Philharmonic, she was due to return in March 2020 for her UMS recital debut. Four years later, we look forward to bringing her back to the Hill Auditorium stage at last.

A performance that beguiles and delights from beginning to end.” (The Strad) This classical superstar trio returns to the Hill Auditorium stage with an all-Beethoven program. (Emanuel Ax, piano; Leonidas Kavakos, violin; and Yo-Yo Ma, cello)

In the 18th and 19th centuries, composers often created — or allowed others to create — chamber arrangements of their orchestral works so that more people could hear their music. In this program, the celebrated trio performs both works originally written for piano trio as well as an arrangement of one of Beethoven’s iconic symphonies, maintaining the power and immediacy of his orchestral work in an intimate arrangement. “One could only marvel at how intuitive and spontaneous these performances were,” raved the Chicago Tribune, “with each player kindling immediate responses from his colleagues. … Chamber music doesn’t get any better than this.”

Location: Hill Auditorium
Organized By: University Musical Society (UMS)

This collaboration between UMS and the U-M School of Music, Theatre & Dance features a new commission and world première by American composer Nkeiru Okoye. When the Caged Bird Sings fuses elements of oratorio, theater, and opera in a multi-movement musical ceremony of sorts, which Okoye describes as “a gathering” that invokes the ritual of the concert experience as a ritual of community.

Drawing inspiration from the Black church, it celebrates the spirit of rising above expectations and transforming adversity into triumph. Partly in tribute to the activist and poet laureate Maya Angelou, the work celebrates the transformative ability of Black women, commemorating those who have paved a path for future generations in many fields of human endeavor.

Presented in collaboration with the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance.

Commissioned by the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance as part of its Michigan Orchestra Repertoire for Equity initiative.

Two of the most sought-after recitalists on the international stage join forces, as Canadian violinist James Ehnes and his longtime recital partner, American pianist Andrew Armstrong, make their UMS live performance debuts together in a concert that will also include faculty and students from the U-M School of Music, Theatre & Dance.

Critics laud the violinist’s rare combination of stunning virtuosity, serene lyricism, and an unfaltering musicality: “Ehnes, who has the silkiest tone in the business, achieves a level of perfection, full of feeling but without show, that puts him in a class of his own. … He gave a poetic performance, bringing out the music’s wistfulness as well as its fury and dazzle.” (The Guardian) UMS audiences enjoyed one of Ehnes’s Bach/Ysäye digital recitals filmed from his living room during the pandemic, but this is the first opportunity to hear him live. Program to be announced.

As the company approaches its 100th anniversary, it continues to exemplify its founder’s timeless and uniquely American style of dance, one that has influenced generations of artists and continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

Martha Graham is recognized as a primal artistic force of the 20th century, alongside Pablo Picasso, Virginia Woolf, Igor Stravinsky, and Frank Lloyd Wright. Graham radically expanded the dance vocabulary, rooting it in social, psychological, and sexual ideas and forever altering the scope of the art form. These performances will include a new work choreographed by Jamar Roberts, resident choreographer for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and set to music by Rhiannon Giddens. The dance will be paired with Agnes de Mille’s 1942 classic Rodeo; its iconic score by Aaron Copland has been reorchestrated for a bluegrass ensemble, offering an expanded view of our cultural history and the influence of Black artists on American music and dance forms. Martha Graham’s final complete work, Maple Leaf Rag, rounds out the program.

Igor Levit is like no other pianist,” proclaims The New Yorker, while The New York Times calls him “one of the most important artists of his generation.”

In this return engagement after his 2016 UMS debut, Igor Levit performs transcriptions of Beethoven’s “Eroica” Symphony and the Adagio from Mahler’s unfinished 10th symphony, as well as Paul Hindemith’s Suite “1922,” written for solo piano with several movements based on popular dances of the day, including the shimmy, Boston, and ragtime.

With an alert and critical mind, he places his art in the context of social events and understands it as inseparably linked to them. The Nizhny Novgorod native moved to Germany at age eight, and within a decade was the youngest participant in the International Arthur Rubinstein Competition, where he won silver, the special prize for chamber music, the audience prize, and the special prize for the best performance of contemporary pieces.

The sweeping coherence and blazing virtuosity of their narrative had the audience leaping to their feet.” (Violinist.com)

The New York City-based Isidore String Quartet was formed in 2019 with a vision to revisit, rediscover, and reinvigorate the repertory. The quartet is heavily influenced by the Juilliard String Quartet — in fact, it takes its name from JSQ founder Isidore Cohen — and the idea of “approaching the established as if it were brand new, and the new as if it were firmly established.” In this program, they move seamlessly from the great musical innovator of the 18th century to a trailblazer of the 21st: Billy Childs, whose String Quartet No. 2 (“Awakening”) was composed in the wake of his wife’s emergency hospitalization 10 years ago due to a pulmonary embolism. It takes the listener through the shock and chaos of the emergency room, the disembodied sonic experience of machines during an extended hospitalization, and subsequent recovery and healing.

Billy Childs String Quartet No. 2 (“Awakening”)

At 27, the young Finnish conductor Klaus Mäkelä already has an impressive resume: chief conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic, music director of the Orchestre de Paris, and artistic partner of the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam, a role that will turn into chief conductor when his other music directorships expire in 2027.

For his UMS debut, he conducts the orchestra in Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and Stravinsky’s complete Firebird, with 2022 Van Cliburn winner Yunchan Lim performing Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2. The 18-year-old Lim’s ascent to international stardom has been meteoric; he is the youngest person to win gold at the Van Cliburn Competition and also won both the Audience Award and the award for Best Performance of a New Work.

Trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire and pianist Sullivan Fortner join forces for a concert at the intersection of jazz and Western European chamber music.

During his 15-year career, Akinmusire has paradoxically situated himself in both the center and the periphery of jazz, most recently emerging in both classical and hip-hop circles. He masterfully weaves inspiration from other genres, arts, and life in general into compositions that are as poetic and graceful as they are bold and unflinching. Sullivan Fortner, who has performed in Hill Auditorium as part of Joshua Redman’s MoodSwing Reunion tour (filling in for Brad Mehldau) and with Cécile McLorin Salvant, has been stretching his deep-rooted talents as a pianist for the past decade.

The longtime collaborators are preparing a concert program unique to UMS that will overlap the sonic exploration of composers and textures related to both chamber music and creative improvisation. Their duet program will consist of songs and materials inspired by the collaboration between Louis Armstrong and Earl “Fatha” Hines.

At 23, Samara Joy is already setting the music world on fire, winning the 2023 Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album, as well as the Best New Artist nod — only the second time in Grammy history that award has been bestowed upon a jazz musician.

Hailing from a family of musicians in the Bronx with roots in gospel, Joy began her journey with jazz at age 17, winning the vocal honors at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington competition. She went on to study with the great Barry Harris and win the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition.

Joy gets inside each song she sings, breathing nuance and life into standards. Her UMS debut falls on the 100th birthday of Sarah Vaughan, one of the great American jazz singers to whom she is often compared.

Directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring Ivor Novello in the title role, the film was based on the 1913 novel by Marie Belloc Lowndes, and established Hitchcock as a reputable director of the thriller genre. Michigan’s Little Bang Theory, a trio founded by Detroit avant-garde music legend Frank Pahl, accompanies the film with an original score, played on toys and children’s instruments, adding a fresh thrill to this thriller.

In his 12th year as music director of The Philadelphia Orchestra, Yannick Nézet-Séguin has created a new golden age for the ensemble, and we’re thrilled to close our 2023/24 season with two performances by the Orchestra.

Saturday night’s program opens with Rachmaninoff’s warm and melodious Symphony No. 2, a lush and sentimental work of immense power and beauty that has not been performed on a UMS program in over 30 years. The program also features Florence Price’s Symphony No. 4, which incorporates melodies from spirituals, including a beautifully-orchestrated theme from “Wade in the Water”; The Philadelphia Orchestra’s Grammy-winning record of Price’s first and third symphonies (2022 “Best Orchestral Performance”) helped spark intense global interest in the Arkansas-born composer.

Sunday afternoon’s season finale puts the UMS Choral Union on display with Johannes Brahms, who poured his soul into his utterly personal German Requiem, which was composed after the death of his mother. Unlike previous requiem masses by Mozart and Berlioz, which were set in a Catholic, Latin text and focused on loss and those who had died, Brahms used excerpts from the Lutheran Bible to create a requiem that offers comfort to those left behind and celebrates the joy of remembrance.

PROGRAM (SAT 4/20/2024: HILL AUDITORIUM)
Sergei Rachmaninoff Symphony No. 2 in e minor, Op. 27
Florence Price Symphony No. 4 in d minor

Join host Doyle Armbrust for “The Society of Disobedient Listeners” — a special pre-performance talk before Saturday evening’s performance, 6:30 pm in the lower lobby of Hill Auditorium.

PROGRAM (SUN 4/21/2024: HILL AUDITORIUM)
Johannes Brahms Ein deutsches Requiem, Op. 45

Shigeto is the pseudonym for Michigan electronic musician Zach Saginaw. Beat-driven, richly textured, rhythmically fractured, but melodically sumptuous, Shigeto’s Live Ensemble brings Zach together with artists Marcus Elliot (saxophone), Ian Fink (keyboards), and special guests for this late-night show.
