About the exhibit:
In February 2022, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time, massive casualties, human rights violations, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They paint on found materials in refugee housing, illustrate in bomb shelters, photograph their shelled cities wearing press passes and bulletproof jackets. They document, create, and share. They post their daily journals and images on social media. They perform at the Grammy Awards. They know their message is powerful, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival.

Curated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna), "'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War" showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The involved artists are painters, photographers, filmmakers, poets, translators, and textile artists. Many of the works exhibited demonstrate a continuity of engagement by the artists with the topic of war, especially since 2014 when the people of Ukraine gathered in a “Revolution of Dignity” against attempts by the Russian Federation to control the country’s independence resulting in Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and backing of pro-Russian separatists in Ukraine’s east.

The featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The title for this exhibit comes from a poem of the same name by Lyuba Yakimchuk:

“— our love’s gone missing, I explain to a friend/ it vanished in one of the wars/ we waged in our kitchen/ — change the word ‘war’ to ‘crisis,’ he suggests/ because a crisis is something everyone has from time to time.”

Like in Yakimchuk’s poem, many of these artists approach the war with personal perspectives. They intertwine, juxtapose, and disrupt experiences of war with the intimacies of personal relationships, the workings interior lives, and perceptions of social roles. The featured artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship.

The exhibit will be accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources.

"'I have a crisis for you': Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War" is hosted by the University of Michigan’s Institute for Research on Women and Gender (IRWG) and the Department of Women’s and Gender Studies with co-sponsorship from the Center for Russian, East European & Eurasian Studies, the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, the Museum Studies Program, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia, and the Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies.

The Weiser Diplomacy Center at the University of Michigan’s Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy and the American Academy of Diplomacy will co-host a discussion with four former ambassadors on the global implications of the war in Ukraine. Ambassador Susan Elliott will consider the war’s implications for NATO and the future of Europe, including whether NATO’s new unity and strength will hold and what the future security architecture of Europe will look like. Ambassador Robert Cekuta will discuss implications for Central Asia and Russia’s “near abroad,” discussing how the war relates to Russia’s imperial history, what it means for the former states of the Soviet Union, and the economic and energy questions it raises. Ambassador Richard Boucher will discuss implications for Asia, including China’s position in this evolving world and how the war in Ukraine will change China’s calculus for Taiwan. Ambassador Ronald Neumann will moderate the panel and provide a perspective on implications for the Middle East.

This event will be live streamed.

To cope with the daily trauma of living in a war-zone, Anna and her children are making a film together about their life in the most surreal surroundings. The creative process raises the question of what kind of impact cinema might have during times of disaster, and how to picture war through the camera’s lens. For Anna and the children, transforming trauma into a work of art is the ultimate way to stay human.
Director/ Script: Iryna Tsilyk, Ukraine
Producer: Anna Kapustina / Albatros Communicos, Ukraine
Producer: Giedrė Žickytė / Moonmakers, Lithuania

Winner of the Directing Award for World Cinema Documentary at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, THE EARTH IS AS BLUE AS AN ORANGE stands not only as a remarkable document of the Russo-Ukrainian War through the lens - literally - of this family's creative process, but as an optimistic testament to the power of art and beauty in the face of destruction.

Prior to February 2022, there was compelling evidence that Russian society had undergone a dramatic transformation that increased social mobilization and created significant new challenges for the regime. While this mobilizational capacity varied widely across regions and issue areas, the growth of everyday activism across the Federation had become linked to political contestation in elections and increased demands for government response. Moreover, everyday protest supporters were drawn from among social conservatives and Putin supporters. This rise in non-political protest also fueled political actions to support banned candidates in Moscow in 2019 and against the arrest of Aleksey Navalny in 2021. Yet, the same society had a very different reaction to the Kremlin’s escalation of the war in Ukraine in 2022. Russian society not only failed to protest the war in large numbers but chose to embrace Kremlin narratives and disinformation and support the special military operation. Based on original evidence, this talk will address the puzzle presented in these disparate pictures of society to explain why post-war protest fizzled and whether we can expect new forms of anti-war action in the future.

For Anna and the children, transforming trauma into a work of art is the ultimate way to stay human.

Besides upending international norms and causing immense suffering, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has also heightened the communication freeze between Russian and American diplomats. In fact, all levels of communication between Moscow and Washington – official, professional, and people-to-people – have stalled at this point. Public opinion surveys represent one of the few remaining ways for policymakers, journalists, experts, and the interested public to stay informed about attitudes in Russia today. The joint public opinion research project started by the Chicago Council on Global Affairs and the Levada Center in 2017 provides critical information about public perceptions of central elements of the bilateral relationship and global affairs more broadly. The two most recent rounds of the survey, conducted in the United States and Russia in March and November 2022, focus on the war in Ukraine. This presentation will unpack the results of these surveys, with a specific focus on which narratives about the conflict are having the most influence on public perception, what paths to a resolution of the conflict each public might see as acceptable, and how opinion has evolved over the past year. The talk will also look to the future, touching on the threats that both publics sense going forward, and the views of younger generations of Russians and Americans.

For this hybrid lecture, Dina Smeltz will be on campus with Denis Volkov and Stepan Goncharov participating remotely. Attendees can join us in person in 555 Weiser Hall or on Zoom at https://myumi.ch/pZQxj

Stepan Goncharov is a senior research fellow at the Levada Center. Goncharov’s field of expertise and research interests include public opinion on international relations, use of media, and modern social processes in Russia. Author of releases on socio-economic behavior on Levada-Center’s website. Stepan Goncharov holds a Specialist degree in Political Science from Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU) and has broad experience in qualitative and quantitative studies in Russia.

With 30 years of experience designing and fielding international social and political surveys, Dina Smeltz joined the Chicago Council on Global Affairs in 2012. She oversees the Council's annual survey of American attitudes toward foreign policy and has authored many analyses based on that work. During her 15-year career as an opinion analyst in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research at the US State Department's Office of Research, Smeltz conducted over a hundred surveys in these regions and regularly briefed senior government officials on key research findings. She has published in The Washington Post, Foreign Affairs, Politico, Newsweek, War on the Rocks, The National Interest, among other sources.

Denis Volkov is a Russian sociologist, in 2021 he was appointed as a new director of the Levada Center, a Moscow based independent sociological research organization. Over fifteen years with the Center he was involved in more than a hundred quantitative and qualitative research projects on different aspects of Russian society. Volkov has authored works on sources of political regime’s support, political attitudes of the Russian youth, protest activities and civil society, business leader and elite opinion in Russia. He was a columnist for Vedomosti, RBC, Nezavisimaya, the Moscow Times newspapers and Carnegie.ru. He now writes for Forbes Russia. His articles also appeared in Osteuropa, Journal of Democracy and Foreign Policy magazines.

Ukrainians have responded to Russia's aggression against their country in consequential ways. In her presentation, Greta Uehling will discuss the highly conscious and creative ways non-combatants engage in what she calls "everyday war." Based on her ethnographic research in Ukraine, Uehling will describe how this everyday war prompted moral thinking about human vulnerabilities. She will explore the improvised ethics of care that arise in a context in which moral rules and international humanitarian law have been upended. Uehling’s recently released book and her talk will demonstrate the insights that can be gained when studies of war and conflict include consideration of families, friendships, and subjective experience.

Greta Uehling is a cultural anthropologist whose current project explores the subjective experience of military conflict in Ukraine. In 2014, Uehling received a Fulbright scholar grant that enabled her to do ethnographic fieldwork over three summers in Ukraine and lead to the publication of "Everyday War: The Conflict over Donbas, Ukraine" (Cornell University Press, 2023). The book bridges the fields of anthropology, international relations, political geography, and peace and conflict studies. A CREES faculty associate, Uehling teaches for the Program in International and Comparative Studies and Anthropology at the University of Michigan.

This lecture will be presented in person in 555 Weiser Hall and on Zoom. Webinar registration required at http://myumi.ch/1AgeV.

CREES Lecture. Post-Soviet Satire in Russia and Ukraine (September 27, 2023 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/111311 111311-21826647@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, September 27, 2023 5:30pm

In the 1990s, Russia saw a slight rise in the field of social satire. However, very soon all this degenerated into innocent humor, and severe censorship was introduced on television. The most gifted satirists emigrated after a period of public harassment, and the least gifted refocused on ridiculing the opposition. Currently, there is simply no social satire in Russia because everyone who knew how to do it left either the profession or the country. Meanwhile, the fast and stormy development of satire in Ukrainian society the past 20 years provoked a rise in national self-consciousness, which led to two revolutions in 2004 and 2014. The victory in the 2019 Ukrainian presidential elections of Volodymyr Zelensky—a satirist, comic actor, and producer of the country’s main satirical show—is in itself an illustration of the enormous role that irony and social criticism played in Ukrainian public life. Nationalism, corruption, theft, incompetence, vestiges of Soviet slavery, and dependence on the West—all of these vices became the target of harsh, sometimes brutal satire.

In this lecture, Dmitry Bykov will explore these ideas while highlighting examples from Russia in the 1990s, like Shenderovich’s television show *Puppets (Kukli)* and some successful jokes and skits on the show *Club of the Cheerful and Resourceful (KVN)*. From the Ukrainian satire scene, Bykov will talk about the writings of Marina and Sergey Dyachenko, Maria Galina, Lyubko Deresh, Yuri and Sofya Andrukhovych, and Oksana Zabuzhko, as well as the songs of Vopli Vidoplyasova and Okean Elzy. Drawing on these examples, Bykov will explore how Ukrainians are a self-ironic nation, which has made them phenomenally resistant to any form of totalitarianism.

Dmitry Bykov is a writer, poet, literary critic, and journalist. He has written and published approximately 90 books, including 15 novels and 20 collections of poetry. Mr. Bykov is the recipient of numerous literary awards, including the Big Book and Golden Pen of Russia. He has worked for 17 newspapers, five magazines, and on seven TV shows. Mr. Bykov has taught in nine universities in Russia and the U.S. including Princeton, UCLA, and Cornell. Most of his books are banned in Russia, but several have been translated into seven languages.

In Guardian Passage, artists Irina Bondarenko and Katya Lisova employ the tools and imagery of traditional Ukrainian art forms to face down the existential threat brought about by Russia’s war on Ukraine. Bondarenko’s installation forms a causeway for visitors to encounter Ukrainian poetry and the art form of motanka dolls in a newly imagined configuration. Motanka are guardian symbols assembled from the clothes of deceased ancestors. Bondarenko’s ceramics illustrate motanka in situations responding to the war; each graphic is accompanied by a poem or a song. These ceramics act as lifeboats, which ferry the Ukrainian resistance through the flood waters of destruction. Lisova’s series of tapestries explore the power of cultural memory to grow in times of war. Traditional embroidery explodes on the surface of photo collage, where images of the past and present collide on a single surface. Like a lifeline, red thread connects these projects, weaving through clay and fabric, bringing tradition to bear on new significances and the cultural will to survive. This exhibition is part of the LSA theme semester on “Arts and Resistance.”

Irina Bondarenko is an emerging ceramic artist, a native of Ukraine, and a biostatistician at the University of Michigan. Irina has been with the University of Michigan Biostatistics Department for more than 20 years. and published over 50 peer-reviewed articles. Along with her career at the School of Public Health, for the last 10 years Irina has been pursuing her interest in ceramics. Her work was featured in over a dozen national shows, the 24th San Angelo National Ceramic Competition, and the “Strictly Functional Pottery National Show” in 2021 and 2022, and, most recently, the Regional Biennial Juried Sculpture Exhibition at Marshall Fredericks Sculpture Museum.
