Special Physics Department Seminar | Single-Molecular Step Resolution of Neuron Transport and Non-Thermal Equilibrium Statistical Physics (September 9, 2022 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/96435 96435-21792497@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, September 9, 2022 4:00pm
Location: West Hall
Organized By: Department Colloquia

We developed optical probes which enabled the tracking of individual molecular cargos by dynein motors in live neurons for 900 µm. Analysis of the statistical fluctuations of the motion showed that the cargo switched stochastically from one to five pairs during the transport over this distance. Clearly resolved single-molecular steps revealed that the dwell times between individual steps requires the hydrolysis of 2 ATPs. The new proposed model is consistent with extensive structural, single-molecule and biochemical measurements. The motion is described by a steady-state “effective temperature” 6-fold higher than 310 K. The application of the fluctuation theorem, first proved in 1993, is used to give a minimum “uncertainty principle” limit, ΔQ ε² ≥ 2kB T𝚎𝚏𝚏, where ΔQ = T𝚎𝚏𝚏ΔS is the heat entropy and ε² ≡ 〈x²〉 ─ 〈x²〉/〈x〉² is the displacement normalize dispersion of motion.

Professor Chu received the 1997 Nobel Prize in Physics for developing laser cooling and trapping of atoms, and served as Secretary of Energy from 2009-2013. Please see Professor Chu's complete bio here: https://profiles.stanford.edu/steve-chu?releaseVersion=9.7.0

There will be a reception before the seminar at 3:30 pm in the Don Meyer Commons.

The Lecture aims to bring prominent social justice experts and advocates from multiple disciplines, including social sciences, science, humanities, the arts, and the professions, to the University of Michigan Campus.

This year's lecture will focus on exploring ways to be a change agent during challenging times and how to use philanthropy as a force for social change. Darren Walker will talk about how he sees his position at the Ford Foundation and the role of philanthropy. He will discuss the idea of "trust-based" philanthropy and that being a leader is sometimes being a convener.

About the Positive Links Speaker Series:
The Positive Links Speaker Series, presented by Michigan Ross’ Center for Positive Organizations, offers inspiring and practical science-based strategies to build and bolster thriving organizations. Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics, students, staff, and leaders.

About the Event:
As workplaces have become increasingly disconnected, individuals have a stronger need for a sense of connection and community. They want to work in environments in which they can be their authentic selves and are valued for their contributions. Leaders are expected to build these types of environments, but to do so in a moment when their plates are already full.

This talk will explore the how of inclusive leadership. Based on her body of research and advisory work with organizations, Quinetta will offer strategies for developing an inclusive mindset and practicing leadership behaviors for creating more inclusive work environments. By incorporating inclusive leadership into daily activities and interactions, we can foster workplaces in which everyone feels enabled to be their best selves.

About Roberson:
Quinetta M. Roberson, PhD is the John A. Hannah Distinguished Professor of Management and Psychology at Michigan State University. Prior to her current position, she was an Endowed Chair at Villanova University and a tenured professor at Cornell University. She has been a visiting scholar at universities on six continents and has more than 20 years of global experience in teaching courses, facilitating workshops, and advising organizations on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Dr. Roberson has published over 40 scholarly journal articles and book chapters, edited a Handbook of Diversity in the Workplace (2013), and is a two-time TEDx speaker. Location: West Hall
Organized By: Michigan Institute for Data Science

Written text contains a wealth of information that can be turned into research data to study almost every aspect of human behavior, human health and our society. However, converting text to usable data requires an understanding of standard techniques from the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP). MIDAS and the AI Lab are jointly organizing a monthly series of NLP workshops during the Fall 2022 semester. The first installment is on Sept. 19, and the second installment is on Oct. 10. Each session does not directly depend upon information from previous sessions.

In the first workshop of the series, we will provide a broad overview of NLP and introduce basic concepts used in NLP, including keyword counting, sentiment classification, and topic modeling. Additional topics include how NLP can be used, what the data look like, what (social science) questions could be answered using NLP, and more.

The second session, on Oct 10, is titled "What's in Text Data?"
Written text contains rich information about human knowledge, opinions, and communication styles, but how do we extract insight about all this from the data? In this second workshop in the series, we will first introduce Jupyter notebooks, a popular platform for performing data science research. Then we will discuss how to choose a dataset for your research question, extract your own dataset from social media sites like Reddit and Twitter, and convert the raw text data to a usable format. We will then explore several methods to extract information and gain insight from text data, including named entity recognition and sentiment analysis.

The CEW+ Advocacy Symposium returns in person this fall to bring together staff, faculty, students, and community members to create change through introspection, dialogue, and action.

This year’s symposium will feature:

Opening Session: Financial Empowerment roundtable discussions and lunch hosted by Laurita Thomas, Executive in Residence, Center for Positive Organizations, President, American Research Universities Human Resources Institute;  with opening remarks from Anne Ollen, MA, CEBS, Managing Director, TIAA Institute; and Tiffany Marra, PhD, CEW+ Director.

A capstone presentation by outgoing CEW+ Twink Frey Visiting Social Activist, Theresa Anderson, Senior Researcher, Urban Institute. Dr. Anderson’s work explores the networks that Michigan student parents navigate, providing insights on policy and practice changes that would make it easier for parenting students in the state, and specifically in the U-M system, to meet their educational goals. CEW+ will also announce the incoming 2023 CEW+ Twink Frey Visiting Social Activist.

Workshops hosted by CEW+, the Ginsberg Center, the Program on Intergroup Relations, and SAPAC are designed to showcase a variety of approaches to advocacy. Workshops provide attendees the opportunity to engage in self-reflection, group discussion, and action-planning to advance their advocacy efforts on behalf of causes that are central to their personal and professional goals.

The awarding of the 2022 Carol Hollenshead Inspire Award for Excellence in Promoting Equity and Social Change. Awardees include faculty, staff, and students whose sustained efforts have resulted in greater equity with regard to gender, race, class, age disability, gender identity, or sexual orientation. Awardees will present lightning talks and participate in a panel discussion.

The Christobel Kotelawela Weerasinghe Lecture, “From Protests to Policy Reforms: Advancing Gender Equality in a Complex, Multi-ethnic and Multi-Religious Nigeria,” presented by Dr. Abiola Akiyode-Afolabi, founding Director of Women Advocates Research and Documentation Center and executive board member of the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding and the Nigerian Women’s Trust Fund. Dr. Akiyode-Afolabi is a professor, lawyer, and civil rights activist whose work is focused on maternal and reproductive health advocacy, gender-based violence, social justice, and the underrepresentation of women in governance.

Once a month, WISE hosts a journal club for undergraduates, graduate students, faculty and staff to discuss recent research on STEM equity. This month's article is "Outperforming yet undervalued: Undergraduate women in STEM." Feel free to bring your lunch!

Does achievement in STEM courses correlate with perceived expertise in STEM by student peers? In this session we will discuss findings in a recent study that women are outperforming men in both physical and life science undergraduate courses, while simultaneously continuing to be perceived as less-able students. Bring your ideas or just your curiosity - all are welcome to join in the discussion.

Ponderomotive Laser Spectroscopy of Rubidium Rydberg Atoms
Spectroscopy of Rydberg atoms with very large principal quantum numbers, n, has traditionally been performed through coherent absorption and emission of microwaves. In my talk, I describe a newly developed and recently demonstrated method of manipulating an alkali (rubidium) Rydberg atom’s valence electron using phase-modulated laser fields that drive a coherent transition between two Rydberg states. The light-matter interaction for this method originates from the ponderomotive force of the laser field acting on the Rydberg electron, rather than the more commonly observed electric-dipole force (which, along with magnetic-dipole interactions, governs most of modern spectroscopy). Because the ponderomotive interaction fundamentally differs from the electric-dipole force, differences arise in selection rules, which are considerably more relaxed in ponderomotive than in traditional spectroscopy. For instance, high-harmonic transitions can be driven in first-order perturbation theory (i.e. without virtual intermediate states, and without a significant drop in Rabi frequency with increasing order). We also observe and explain a new paradigm for Doppler-free spectroscopy. In my talk, I will describe details of the optical setup, the phase-control of the light, the experimental spectra, our models, and numerical simulations. Applications of ponderomotive Rydberg-atom spectroscopy include site-selective spin manipulations in quantum simulators, high-l-Rydberg-state initialization, and gate operations in Rydberg quantum computers.

Ferro-Rotational Domain Walls Revealed by Electric Quadrupole Second Harmonic Generation Microscopy
Domain walls in (multi)ferroics have received tremendous attention recently due to their emergent properties distinct from their domain counterparts. However, in contrast to ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity, it is extremely challenging to study ferro-rotational (FR) domain walls because the FR order is invariant under both spatial-inversion and time-reversal operations and thus hardly couple with conventional probes. Here, we investigate an FR candidate NiTiO3 with electric quadrupole (EQ) second harmonic generation rotational anisotropy (SHG RA) and probe the point symmetries of its two degenerate FR domain states. We then visualize the real-space FR domains and domain walls using scanning EQ SHG microscopy. By taking local EQ SHG RA measurements, we further show the restoration of the mirror symmetry at FR domain walls and prove their nonpolar nature. Our findings not only provide insight into FR domain walls, but also demonstrate a powerful tool for future studies on domain walls of unconventional ferroics.

Towards Unreasonable Effectiveness in AdS5
Gauge/gravity duality has garnered an enormous amount of interest in the last twenty-five years. The prototypical example is the AdS/CFT correspondence, which relates supergravity with a negative cosmological constant to a conformal field theory in one lower dimension. In particular, this relates gravitational and non-gravitational theories. I will focus on the supergravity story, specifically with higher-derivative corrections. In this talk, I will give a brief introduction to the AdS/CFT correspondence and higher derivatives and discuss some recent work with my advisor Jim Liu regarding the universality of supersymmetric four-derivative corrections to minimal supergravity in five spacetime dimensions.

Come join MIDAS and invited presenters for a series of talks on AI and Sustainability. This event is free and remote.
While infrastructure, both static and dynamic, is the driver of modern global economy, it is also a significant contributor towards global climate change due to the increased emissions. Artificial intelligence (AI) provides a radical framework for mitigating emissions by improving efficiency in static infrastructure, as well as enhancing mobility in transportation through low-carbon transport options and reduction in overall travel time. Through this mini-colloquium, we hope to bring together researchers from varied fields employing AI on these strategies.

Our speakers for the event are:

Dr. Felix Creutzig (https://www.mcc-berlin.net/en/about/team/creutzig-felix.html) - Prof. Dr. Felix Creutzig is head of the working group Land Use, Infrastructures and Transport and Chair of Sustainability Economics at Technische Universität Berlin. He was lead author of the IPCC’s Fifth Assessment Report and lead analyst of the Global Energy Assessment. His research focuses on conceptualizing and quantifying GHG emissions of cities world-wide, assessing opportunities for GHG mitigation of cities world-wide and building models of sustainable urban form and transport.

Dr. Lynn Kaack (https://www.hertie-school.org/en/research/faculty-and-researchers/profile/person/kaack) - Dr. Kaack is Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Public Policy at the Hertie School. Her research and teaching focus on methods from statistics and machine learning to inform climate mitigation policy across the energy sector, and she also has an interest in climate-related AI policy. She is a co-founder and chair of the organization Climate Change AI, and a member of the Austrian Council on Robotics and Artificial Intelligence, which is an advisory board of the Austrian Ministry for Climate Action.

Priya L. Donti (https://priyadonti.com/) - Ms. Donti is a Ph.D. Candidate in the Computer Science Department and the Department of Engineering & Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University, co-advised by Zico Kolter and Inês Azevedo. She is also a co-founder and chair of Climate Change AI, an initiative to catalyze impactful work at the intersection of climate change and machine learning. Her work focuses on machine learning for forecasting, optimization, and control in high-renewables power grids. Specifically, her research explores methods to incorporate the physics and hard constraints associated with electric power systems into deep learning models.

Dr. Moataz Mohamed (https://www.eng.mcmaster.ca/civil/people/faculty/moataz-mohamed#overview) - Dr. Mohamed’s research focuses on the systemic evaluation of transportation networks to achieve sustainable and resilient transportation systems. Thursday, October 6th
10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Room 1180, Duderstadt Center, North Campus

The University of Michigan’s Eisenberg Family Depression Center in partnership with the Michigan Engineering's C.A.R.E. Center, will offer students, faculty and staff a free opportunity to determine whether they are experiencing some of the symptoms of depression, and would benefit from further evaluation.

The confidential screenings for depression and related conditions will be provided by trained mental health professionals.

National Depression Screening Day is a public education program - the feedback provided after a screening is informational, not diagnostic. Based on screening results, mental health professionals may recommend a more comprehensive evaluation.

Free screenings are a good way for people to find out if depression might be the cause of feelings they’ve been experiencing, including prolonged sadness, anxiety, irritability, loss of pleasure in activities, feelings of hopelessness and worthlessness and even physical pain.

For more information about National Depression Screening Day, contact Taylor Pahl at tpahl@umich.edu

Natural Language Processing Workshop Series (October 10, 2022 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/97509 97509-21794843@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, October 10, 2022 3:00pm

Organized By: Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Program

In light of the recent decision by the Supreme Court to overturn Roe vs. Wade, join us for a panel discussion event to explore the implications of this decision on the STEM community.

Presented by the STEM Trifecta, a collaborative comprising the Women in Science and Engineering Residence Program (WISE RP), the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Program, and the College of Engineering’s Office of Culture, Community and Equity (OCCE). The STEM Trifecta was established to elevate the overlapping goals and outcomes of each respective unit, while creating new initiatives and outreach to support minoritized communities pursuing science, engineering, technology and mathematics at the University of Michigan and beyond.

In particular, we want to create a safe space for students to learn about the science, policy, and real-world impact of this decision–at the personal level as college undergraduate and graduate students–but also as emerging STEM professionals. We hope to create space for understanding, and empower individual and collective action to discover how one can use their spheres of influence to effect change. Finally, we are hoping to positively promote the benefits of voting, and you will be able to register to vote during the event.

A Multi-Messenger Search for H0 Using Optical Counterparts to Gravitational Wave Events

Measurements of the Hubble Constant (H0) – a parameter that helps illustrate the expanding behavior of the universe – differ vastly, particularly between those using early- versus late-universe data. To help relieve this tension, the Dark Energy Survey Gravitational Wave group (DESGW) seeks to perform a standard siren measurement of H0 by identifying electromagnetic counterparts to compact binary mergers. Together with the GW data from detections by the LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA Collaboration (LVK), this information allows us to make an H0 measurement independent of traditional methods. In this talk, I will detail DESGW’s pursuit of this measurement, including our tools for observation and analysis, recent key results, ongoing studies critical to the project, and our preparation for the next LVK observing run.

Imaging of Dynamic Exciton Interactions and Coupling in Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are regarded as a possible material platform for quantum information science, photovoltaics, and related device applications. However, many experimental results on TMDs are only realized at specific spots on the sample, presenting a challenge to the scalability of these applications. Here, we demonstrate multi-dimensional coherent imaging spectroscopy on TMD monolayer and heterostructure samples. This technique enables us to shed light on the spatial dynamics of various material parameters—including dephasing, inhomogeneity, and strain, as well as coherent exciton coupling and charge transfer. We demonstrate that dephasing and inhomogeneity are very sensitive to residual strain in state-of-the-art TMD monolayer samples. At the same time, the coherent coupling strength and charge transfer remain robust across large areas of the heterostructure sample. Our findings strengthen the case for heterostructure TMDs as a next-generation material platform for device applications and introduce a powerful tool in multi-dimensional coherent imaging spectroscopy for material characterization.

The Space of Supersymmetric Theories

I will review how causality non-trivially bounds the space of quantum field theories, focusing in particular on maximally supersymmetric theories in four dimensions. I will then discuss some geometric properties of this space and how to efficiently calculate bounds using linear programming. Finally, I will use some results from string theory to motivate novel conjectures.

Advance registration is required, https://bit.ly/3d3upwR

The Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science (MPSDS) offers graduate degrees that combine ideas and techniques for producing and analyzing data about humans and our society. Joint us to launch your career in this exciting and rewarding field in which scientists interpret the world through data.

The University of Michigan Program in Survey Methodology was established in 2001 seeking to train future generations of survey and data scientists. In 2021, we changed our name to the Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science. Our curriculum is concerned with a broad set of data sources including survey data, but also including social media posts, sensor data, and administrative records, as well as analytic methods for working with these new data sources. And we bring to data science a focus on data quality — which is not at the center of traditional data science. The new name speaks to what we teach and work on at the intersection of social research and data. The program offers doctorate and master of science degrees and a certificate through the University of Michigan. The program's home is the Institute for Social Research, the world's largest academically-based social science research institute.

2022 Ta-You Wu Lecture in Physics | Finding Cosmic Inflation (October 19, 2022 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/96471 96471-21792563@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, October 19, 2022 4:00pm
Location: Rackham Graduate School (Horace H.)
Organized By: Department Colloquia

This event is hybrid and, therefore, live-streamed. The lecture will be available at 4:00 pm on YouTube, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=galZmVFEcm0.

The Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) gives a photographic image of the Universe when it was still an “infant,” and its detailed measurements have given us a wealth of information, such as the composition and history of the Universe. The CMB research told us a remarkable story: the structure we see in our Universe, such as galaxies, stars, planets, and eventually ourselves, originated from tiny quantum fluctuations in the period of early Universe called “cosmic inflation.” But is this picture true? In this lecture, I will review the physics of CMB and key results from recent experiments and discuss future prospects for the quest to find out about our origins.

The Sweetland Minor in Writing is designed for undergraduate students who are interested in developing their disciplinary and professional writing abilities while pursuing their majors. It gives you the freedom to write about what matters to you while helping you develop as a writer and thinker.

Students currently in the Minor program come from all over the university bringing a wealth of diverse interests to the classroom. You might find a screenwriter sitting between a scientist and a musician or Kinesiology, Business, and Communications majors giving each other feedback on their writing.

With a Sweetland Minor in Writing you will earn a credential that certifies your writing expertise to prospective employers and graduate programs. You will also pick up new media skills designing and creating content for your electronic writing portfolios.

If you are interested in learning more about the Sweetland Minor in Writing from current students and faculty, or have questions about the application process, you can attend a Minor in Writing Virtual Information Session hosted on Zoom.

The deadline to apply for the Winter 2023 cohort is Monday, October 24th at noon.
