This is an in-person lecture. You may also watch a live stream on YouTube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OplDYUtTRto

There is growing support for the transition from a global energy infrastructure dependent on coal, natural gas, and oil to one entirely reliant on a combination of battery electric vehicles, photovoltaic solar, wind turbines, and grid-scale battery storage. Manufacturing and deploying these renewable energy resources requires dozens of natural resources, including copper, lithium, nickel, tellurium, cobalt, indium, tin, chromium, and many, many others. Where do these resources come from? Is there enough? Will they be available on the timescale we need? What are the economic constraints on their availability? What are the environmental permitting constraints on the timeframe for production and delivery to market? What are the political constraints on their availability? Please join me for a presentation where I answer these questions and more.

ABOUT
Story Lab develops executive-level presence and communication skills through storytelling workshops and events. To be an effective leader — at work, in the community, or in your personal life — you must be able to communicate with impact. Often this means telling stories that are meaningful to you and others, and doing so in the rich language and expressive style of a seasoned storyteller. If you can craft and deliver an effective story, you will be better able to convey your value to recruiters, inspire and motivate classmates and colleagues, and influence your audience. At Story Lab, you’ll find an immersive experience and an opportunity to hone your skills in a safe and supportive environment.

Sense of Self: The Islamic Contemporary (February 17, 2023 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/105043 105043-21810636@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 17, 2023 10:00am
Location: East Quadrangle
Organized By: Residential College

Despite recent panels and scholarship aiming to dispel the notion, there is a conception that contemporary art and religion are incompatible.

When paired with the Islamophobic sentiment that Islam is destructive, rather than constructive like artistic practices and that it even forbids many forms of artistic production, there is a presumption that contemporary art that engages with Islam as religion and faith (rather than simply as identity) cannot exist.

There is an additional assumption that those who identify as women, queer, trans, and non-binary are unlikely to engage with Islam in their work outside of critique, because of the belief that Islam is inherently (and uniquely) oppressive of and therefore contradictory to individuals who identify as such.

In an attempt to disabuse viewers of these notions, as well as give a space of exploration to these often overlooked or excluded voices, this exhibition brings together women, queer, trans, and non-binary Muslim artists who explore their connection to religion, their other identities (be those related to their race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, or status as artists), and their practices.

Chris Rutledge is the 2023 Willie Hobbs Moore Distinguished Alumni Lectureship award winner.

Engineers today require a more comprehensive skill set and a broader personal network than ever before. The world’s problems are complex, and engineers must understand how these issues intersect to develop effective solutions. Creating a foundational toolset is paramount to addressing these problems. Additionally, the ability to communicate to both a technical audience and to non-technical decision makers are the keys to successful achievement of objectives. This talk will also trace a journey from rural East Texas to Distinguished Engineer at one of the biggest telecommunications companies in the world.

Bio
Christopher Rutledge is a Distinguished Engineer at Verizon and holds numerous patents in next generation communications technology. His philosophy is that all problems are eagerly waiting to be solved. With a BS in Electrical Engineering from Prairie View, an MS in Electrical Engineering from Michigan, and rich experiences across both public and private sectors, he has honed his ability to provide solutions in the midst of concurrent crises while embracing the accompanying chaos. He is currently responsible for the development of a Device Management platform that has, in 5 years, grown from 6 Verizon Business customers to well over 260,000, including over a half-million students learning remotely during the pandemic.

Christopher comes from a family of teachers dating back to reconstruction in the Great State of Texas and is the proud father of two Wolverines. Being a Track Parent, he still employs Statics & Dynamics while strength training young athletes at his home in New Jersey.

Zoom information will be shared via email. Contact Ann Stals for more information.

Topic: *Modeling CTL-mediated Tumor Cell Death Mechanisms and the Activity of Immune Checkpoints in Immunotherapy*

Immunotherapy has dramatically transformed the cancer treatment landscape. Of the variety of types of immunotherapies available, immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), which block inhibitory signals from tumor cells and reinvigorate killing activities of immune cells, have gained the spotlight. Although ICIs have shown promising results for some patients, the low response rates in many cancers highlight the challenges of using immune checkpoint blockade as an effective treatment. Cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) execute their cell-killing function via two distinct mechanisms. The first process is fast-acting and perforin/granzyme-mediated, and the second is a slower, Fas ligand (FasL)-driven killing mechanism. There is also evidence suggesting that the preferred killing mechanism by CTLs depends on the antigenicity of tumor cells. To determine the key factors affecting responses to checkpoint blockade therapy, we constructed an ordinary differential equation model describing in vivo tumor-immune dynamics in the presence of active or blocked PD-1/PDL1 immune checkpoint. Specifically, we analyzed which aspects of the tumor-immune landscape affect the response to ICIs with endpoints of tumor size and composition in the short and long term. By generating a virtual cohort with heterogeneous tumor and immune attributes, we also simulated the therapeutic outcomes of immune checkpoint blockade in a largely diverse population. In this way, we identified key tumor and immune characteristics that are associated with tumor elimination, dormancy and escape. This talk will also shed light on which fraction of a population potentially responds well to ICIs and ways to enhance therapeutic outcomes with combination therapy.

Sense of Self: The Islamic Contemporary (February 24, 2023 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/105043 105043-21810637@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 24, 2023 10:00am

Alum Connection with Theo Poling: How Experiences in Film, Publishing, and Activism Led to Pivotal Career Moments (March 8, 2023 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/104305 104305-21808809@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, March 8, 2023 3:00pm
Location: LSA Building
Organized By: LSA Opportunity Hub

Theo Poling (they/them or he/him) amassed success in high school by self-publishing and selling their writing on Amazon long before it was popular on TikTok. When it came time to choose a college, the Ann Arbor-raised Theo opted to go out-of-state and study playwriting and screenwriting at the University of Southern California where they published Black Knuckle and Deputy Maltese and Into the Intersticks. As they advanced deeper into the film industry, however, they also began to notice the inequities in the industry, and knew that they could be doing more. This ushered in a defining career moment for Theo which brought them back to U-M as a transfer student. At U-M, Theo continued to excel in writing and publishing, but also developed a new passion too: higher education and mentorship. Theo now returns to LSA to answer questions about how they got started in different industries, when they knew it was time to change course, and how they continue to navigate career growth as a young professional.

About Theo:
Theo Poling graduated from the University of Michigan with degrees in Creative Writing & Literature and Arts & Ideas in the Humanities. While at the university, Theo founded the Trans and Gender Nonconforming Arts Review. They are passionate about institutional equity and making sure all students feel seen and heard. In their free time, Theo loves to hike, foster cats, and is hard at work writing novels and television screenplays for production.

You should attend this session if you are:
- Interested in building a career in Creative Arts, DEI, Education, or Film & Media Studies.
- Curious about writing, publishing, querying or pitching for TV
- Thinking about grad school after your undergrad degree

What you’ll gain by attending:
- Ideas for how to go about finding your first job after graduation
- Perspectives on juggling rejection in the writing and creative industries
- Answers to questions on how to get your writing published.

RSVP NOW to be part of the conversation.

The Opportunity Hub aims to deliver inclusive and accessible experiences and welcomes all LSA students to participate. This event is on the first floor of a wheelchair accessible building which includes wheelchair-accessible restrooms on the first, a gender-inclusive and accessible restroom on the [first floor], places to sit or stand during the event, and accessible parking options nearby. To request other accommodations please contact LSA Hub Events at lsa.hubevents@umich.edu or 734-763-4674 so we can make arrangements.

Topic: *Deterministic and Stochastic Modeling of Dynamical Systems in Chemical Kinetics*

Chemical reactions are ubiquitous in nature in the form of biological and physical processes. We use nonlinear ordinary differential equations to mathematically model these processes in the deterministic regime. If a given process occurs at disparate time-scales, we can further reduce the number of equations to obtain a quasi-steady-state approximation of the system. In this talk, we consider a significant mechanism in chemical kinetics called the Michaelis–Menten reaction and its different quasi-steady-state reductions. We focus on the challenges faced in applying classical reduction theory on the system and the conditions under which its reductions are valid in the stochastic regime. We make use of a stochastic simulation algorithm called the Gillespie algorithm to demonstrate the accuracy of the reduced systems and to disprove a commonly-accepted qualifier for the validity of the stochastic approximation.

Topic: *Accelerating Stochastic Sequential Quadratic Programming for Equality Constrained Optimization using Predictive Variance Reduction*

We propose a stochastic method for solving equality constrained optimization problems that utilizes predictive variance reduction. Specifically, we develop a method based on the sequential quadratic programming paradigm that employs variance reduction in the gradient approximations. Under reasonable assumptions, we prove that a measure of first-order stationarity evaluated at the iterates generated by our proposed algorithm converges to zero in expectation from arbitrary starting points, for both constant and adaptive step size strategies. Finally, we demonstrate the practical performance of our proposed algorithm on constrained binary classification problems that arise in machine learning.

Alum Connection with Trooper Sanders: LSA degree as asset in the socio-tech space of AI (March 13, 2023 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/104892 104892-21810412@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, March 13, 2023 3:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: LSA Opportunity Hub

Trooper often finds himself in rooms packed with engineers and programmers, helping think through technological developments and their impact on people seeking food or access to healthcare. “I’m the LSA person in those rooms,” he says, referring to the critical thinking skills and multiple disciplines he studied in LSA that still give him an edge in his nearly thirty-year career. Join Trooper in this conversation that will explore how he maneuvered into this rapidly expanding “socio-tech” and tech-adjacent space. Learn the power of internships and how an internship experience led Trooper to a role with President Clinton’s administration. Ask Trooper all your questions about getting started in tech, government and policy, and nonprofit leadership. Join us!

About Trooper:
Trooper Sanders is CEO of Benefits Data Trust, a nonprofit that uses data, technology, policy change, and direct service to help people tap the more than $60 billion in unclaimed benefits that support critical needs such as food security and healthcare. Trooper brings over 20 years of experience working at the crossroads of business, government, and the nonprofit sector. Before joining BDT, Trooper was a Rockefeller Foundation fellow and worked on the social and economic implications of the global rise of artificial intelligence. For eight years, Trooper ran Wise Whisper, a strategic advisory practice to financial technology startups, philanthropic initiatives, and business leaders. He has also held White House policy staff positions during two administrations. In the nonprofit sector, he led the creation of ventures addressing issues such as the childhood obesity epidemic in the United States, the economic fallout of disasters, and the private sector's role in international development.

He currently serves on the National Artificial Intelligence Advisory Committee, the national board of Girl Scouts of USA, and the Military Family Research Institute's advisory board. He is also a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Trooper earned his bachelor’s from the LSA (Individualized Concentration in International Political Economy, ‘95) and holds a Master of Science in Regulation from the London School of Economics, as well as a Master of Law from the University of London.

You should attend this session if you are:
- Interested in a career in artificial intelligence and its ethical implications
- Exploring the potential of a career that leverages data for public good
- Curious about how to work at the intersection of business, government, and the nonprofit sector
- An LSA student exploring your career options

What you’ll gain by attending:
- The support of a successful alum with nearly 30 years of varied career experience
- Insights into current and upcoming trends in the socio-tech space
- Answers to your questions about launching your career after graduation

Financial Anxiety is what happens when a person feels worried, nervous, or on edge when thinking about their finances. Up to 70% of Americans say they feel financial anxiety, but the personal finance industry largely focuses on the "how to" of money, which doesn't necessarily help with the emotional side of money. Join this free event where financial therapist, and UM alum, Lindsay Bryan-Podvin will talk about the emotional side of money. Attendees will understand financial anxiety, gain tips on coping with financial perfectionism and procrastination, and have an honest exploration of "passion" when getting ready to choose a career that suits a young professional's financial needs.

Free live virtual wellness group from 5:30 - 7:00pm
Registration required at campusmindworks.org
Zoom link will be accessible in your registration confirmation email the day of the event

These mental health education and support groups are a service of the U-M Eisenberg Family Depression Center, in partnership with the U-M Engineering’s C.A.R.E. Center and the Newnan Academic Advising Center.

Location: 202 S. Thayer
Organized By: Institute for the Humanities

Register to attend this event at https://myumi.ch/636y6.

College is a time when many of us think about the ways we might want to make an imprint on the world. We’re inviting students (individuals and/or groups of friends) to come to the Institute for the Humanities Gallery and explore making an imprint through the work of artist Nicole Marroquin.

Marroquin’s exhibition “With Care” was created specifically for the Institute for the Humanities Gallery. It puts her printmaking and sculpture in dialogue with Mexican-born artist and educator Diana Solis’s photographs of Chicana and lesbian community organizing. Together, the work visually articulates the complex and exquisite nature of the human relationships that bind us, and the imprint these two extraordinary artists have made on the world.

This interactive experience includes:

-A curator-led guided tour of the exhibition
-An opportunity to reflect on the idea of “making an imprint” by creating your own printmaking block and creating a work of art on paper or a t-shirt
-An ice-cream sundae bar with lots of toppings!

Presented by the Public Humanities Interns at the Institute for the Humanities.

This can be particularly true with people in a position of authority, such as a faculty advisor, department chair, work supervisor, or future employer. In this workshop, we will practice skills and strategies to effectively interact with powerful people, including turn-taking strategies, active listening, and sources for sample conversations. We will consider how to seem friendly and confident at a job interview or competent and insightful in a research group meeting. Come ready to practice with one another and to identify effective ways to practice on your own.

Unprecedented global crises have proven the critical need to develop the resiliency to overcome adversity and thrive at individual, team, and leadership levels. Understanding the true role of adversity enables us to embrace challenges as catalysts for change. Significant challenges in every context constantly emerge, and the wisdom needed to thrive in this dynamic environment is essential for our growth and development.

This workshop explores the resiliency theory framework, focusing on practical insights, knowledge, and next steps to build resilient habits as individuals, teams, and leaders. This workshop uses interactive online activities, small and large group discussions, and personal reflections to help participants understand individual, team, and leadership resiliency, and begin building resilient mindsets at each level.

The BLI, M-LEAD, Army ROTC, Air Force ROTC and Navy ROTC are excited to invite our students and emerging undergraduate leaders to join us on March 16th for this interactive workshop on resiliency.

On Thursday, 3/16, we will be hosting the McDonald's VP of US Marketing, Branded Content, and Engagement, JJ Healan. JJ is one of my (Professor Marcus Collins) closest clients at McDonald’s, responsible for leading the Famous Orders campaigns that we created within the walls of McDs along with the Adult Happy Meal activation, and a host of other game-changing initiatives that have helped earn the brand its top spot on Fast Company's 2023 Most Innovative Brands list. Furthermore, JJ has been recognized as Ad Age 2021 Brand Leader of the Year, Business Insider 2021 Rising Star, and more recently one of the 2022 Adweek 50 Luminaries. Needless to say, JJ is amazing, and, fortunately for us, she will be joining us THIS THURSDAY to discuss her career, her successes (at Coke and McDs), her life lessons, and what will be required for tomorrow's marketing leaders.

The event will start at 7pm in the Corner Commons of Blau--Room B1590.
I hope you can join us.

Sense of Self: The Islamic Contemporary (March 17, 2023 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/105043 105043-21810640@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 17, 2023 10:00am

Alum Connection with Vinal Desai Burbeck: Study What You Love & Find Purposeful Work (March 17, 2023 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/104895 104895-21810418@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 17, 2023 12:00pm
Location: LSA Building
Organized By: LSA Opportunity Hub

As an undergrad in LSA, Vinal pursued English and in Women and Gender Studies but often found herself wondering: what will I do with this degree? Upon graduating in 2009, Vinal found herself amidst an economic recession and felt her future was uncertain. However, she used that time to discover what mattered to her the most and what she needed from a career. In 2015, she found a way to combine her passion, talent, and joy by launching her own travel business.

Join Vinal for a lunch n’ learn where you get to ask the questions you want about and hear insights on what she wished she’d known as a student. You’ll also learn about careers in travel & tourism — a field that is not always discussed!

About Vinal:
Vinal Desai Burbeck (she/her), Certified Travel Associate (CTA) is the founder of Wanderlark, a boutique travel agency dedicated to helping curious travelers wander the world with ease. As its Chief Experience Officer, Vinal orchestrates wonderful travel experiences ranging from weekend getaways in the U.S. to luxurious journeys through Europe (and everything in between). Before founding Wanderlark, Vinal was a senior account manager at Google, where she led digital marketing strategy for live entertainment clients. Prior to Google, Vinal held a variety of positions at her alma mater, the University of Michigan. Currently, she is loving life in Ann Arbor but tries to explore, eat and drink her way through other cities as often as possible.

You should attend this session if you are:
- You are interested in pursuing a career in Hospitality & Tourism, Advertising & Marketing, or Entrepreneurship
- Curious about digital advertising, sales, customer service or consulting
- Thinking about how to build a career where you get to travel

What you’ll gain by attending:
- Inspiration to study what you love while gaining the skills employers are hiring for
- Tips that LSA alums which they knew when they were undergrads
- Insights into and ideas for starting your own company

RSVP NOW to be part of the conversation. Lunch will be provided during this conversation.

Livestreamed Lecture and Q&A on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=US-YWgcU1UQ

Located in the former Homestake gold mine in Lead, South Dakota, the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) houses experiments that give us a better understanding of the universe. The location—one mile underground—provides a near-perfect environment for experiments that need to escape the constant bombardment of cosmic radiation, which can interfere with the detection of rare physics events. Built in collaboration with University of Michigan Professor Bjoern Penning, LUX-Zeplin is the world’s most sensitive dark matter experiment. SURF also hosts experiments in biology, geology, and engineering. In 2019 Gina Gibson became the first artist in residence at SURF. In this special presentation, Bjoern Penning will introduce the LUX-Zeplin experiment, and Gina Gibson will describe her creations that celebrate research deep below the earth’s surface discovering beauty in the old and new, the light and dark, and the known and unknown.

ABOUT
Story Lab develops executive-level presence and communication skills through storytelling workshops and events.

Sense of Self: The Islamic Contemporary (March 24, 2023 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/105043 105043-21810641@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 24, 2023 10:00am

Zero Waste Week: Waste Justice Panel (March 24, 2023 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/106408 106408-21814482@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 24, 2023 2:00pm
Location: Michigan League
Organized By: Environmental Consulting Organization at the University of Michigan

Join us for a panel discussion of waste colonialism and justice in the linear economy.
This panel discussion will engage with the broad idea that our linear economies, in which items are produced, sold, used, and thrown away, are not only harmful to our ecosystems but to the communities (humans and non-humans) who live, work, play, and pray in these very same ecosystems. A key example of such dynamics is that every part of the process of making, consuming and disposing of single-use plastics is harmful to our people and to our planet. From the pipeline fracking needed to produce the raw oil to make plastics, to its transport to oil refineries, in cities like Detroit, and to petrochemical facilities, in cities like Houston, TX and St. James, LA, to its disposal in landfills, incinerators, and in low-income and BIPOC communities’ backyards in the Global North and South, the toxic impacts of our single-use plastic economies cannot be denied.
It is those very same communities, who are at the forefront of our unjust waste producing systems, who are also at the forefront of building equitable and just alternatives to these systems. The alternatives and solutions include anti-incineration struggles; community-based recycling and composting programs, food and secondhand goods redistribution services, sharing economies, and mutual aid networks; human rights campaigns to advocate for the rights of waste pickers and of families to safe working conditions and environments; the passing of progressive policies, like single-use plastic bans, to hold corporate actors accountable; and the list goes on.
The panelists, who will be speaking about their work at this event, emerge from numerous fields, such as community composting and recycling, social services, global policy organizing, and are integral to our waste justice movements. We hope that by the end of the event, attendees will walk away feeling more confident about answering the following questions for themselves:
What does waste justice look like on the ground in Detroit and other parts of the world?
How should zero waste strategies be integral to our climate action strategies?
How can I support these efforts and stay connected to them?

Cybersecurity and Risk Management: From Data to Policy (March 29, 2023 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/106356 106356-21814122@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, March 29, 2023 3:00pm

A reception will immediately follow the talk.

With increasingly frequent and evermore costly data breaches and other cyber incidents, effectively assessing, quantifying, and managing cyber risks has become crucial for organizations large and small. Many key challenges we face are rooted in unique characteristics of this type of risk, from a fast-changing threat landscape that brings unforeseen forms of attacks, to the fact that cyber risks are heavily interdependent among organizations. I will take a look at how this field has evolved over the past decade and describe my research group’s work within this context, in particular, the use of data and supervised learning tools to quantify cyber risk at an organization level, and the use of cyber insurance as a policy mechanism to incentivize better risk control.

Bio:

Mingyan Liu is a leading expert in optimal resource allocation, performance modeling, sequential decision and learning theory, game theory and incentive mechanisms, all within the context of large-scale networked systems and with applications to cyber risk quantification.

Technologies she developed in the cybersecurity space have been successfully transitioned. She co-founded the start-up company, QuadMetrics, Inc., commercializing predictive data analytics her team developed for cyber risk quantification that resulted in the first global enterprise cybersecurity ratings system; it was acquired by the analytics software company Fair Isaac (FICO) in 2016. This technology has been used for enterprise risk management, vendor management, cyber insurance underwriting, and most recently, in augmenting Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) ratings.

Prof. Liu joined the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in September 2000, as an assistant professor in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. She has been the Peter and Evelyn Fuss Chair of ECE since 2018. She is the recipient of the 2002 NSF CAREER Award, the University of Michigan Elizabeth C. Crosby Research Award in 2003 and 2014, the 2010 EECS Department Outstanding Achievement Award, the 2015 CoE Excellence in Education Award, the 2017 CoE Excellence in Service Award, and the 2018 Distinguished University Innovator Award. She has received a number of Best Paper Awards and has served on the editorial boards of IEEE/ACM Trans. Networking, IEEE Trans. Mobile Computing, and ACM Trans. Sensor Networks. She is a Fellow of the IEEE and a member of the ACM.

Prof. Liu received an MS degree in Systems Engineering and Ph.D in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park, in 1997 and 2000, respectively.

Most recently he served as a Vice President at BGR Group, a premier DC lobbying firm, where he focused his work on similar issues. Prior to BGR, Chay served as Chief of Staff for Rep. Terri Sewell (D-AL), a senior Member of the House Ways and Means Committee.

Cachavious has said before that sometimes you have to test different roles and industries early in your career to determine what you want or don’t want. By allowing himself to pursue his interests and passions, Cachavious found a way to marry those passions, interests, and developed skills into specific opportunities . Join Cachavious English (’07 AfroAmerican and African Studies) as he explains how he went about crafting a career built around the passions he developed as an undergrad -- and how you can too. Cachavious will also explain how he went about choosing opportunities that were best for him.

You should attend this session if you are:
- An LSA undergraduate.
- Interested in building a career in law, government relations, or public policy.
- Curious about working within the federal legislative branch or learning about legislative processes.
- Thinking about law school after your undergraduate degree.

What you will gain by attending:
- Open your mind to career possibilities and potential opportunities within government and the private sector.
- Gain insights into the different roles available within a congressional office.
- Learn ways in which you can advocate for people in your community.
- Learn how multinational corporations determine and represent their policy interests domestically and abroad and balance it with societal well-being.

RSVP NOW to reserve your spot. By signing up, you will receive an email with details on how to attend this workshop the morning of the session.

About Cachavious:
Chay is originally from Selma, Al and received his BA degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. After graduation, Chay attended the University of Alabama School of Law where he was active in the National Black Law Students Association and the Trial Advocacy Competition Team. He received his JD and was admitted to the Alabama State Bar in 2010. Chay is active in the local DC community and enjoys volunteering with various organizations.

Chay joined the private sector after nearly a decade of working and advocating on Capitol Hill for bipartisan solutions and legislation that promoted economic development, social equity and innovation. As one of Rep. Sewell’s key advisors, he was responsible for managing the staff, advising on issues, implementing legislative strategies and managing Rep. Sewell’s duties as Chief Deputy Whip. He also managed her involvement in the Congressional Black Caucus and New Dem Coalition.

Sense of Self: The Islamic Contemporary (March 31, 2023 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/105043 105043-21810642@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 31, 2023 10:00am

Scientists exploit the special properties of quantum physics to advance the state-of-the-art in measurement and imaging. These "quantum tools" can be used to probe the nature, history, and fate of the Universe–and can also be applied to down-to-Earth problems, ranging from health to security to navigation. I will describe some examples that have emerged from my laboratory and others over the last couple of decades.

Location: Rackham Graduate School (Horace H.)
Organized By: UNICEF at the University of Michigan

This year, for our second annual gala, UNICEF-UM is focusing on ending child marriage in the United States of America. UNICEF defines child marriage as "a harmful practice and a violation of child rights and believes that marriage under age 18 should be prohibited in all circumstances, everywhere." Both UNICEF and the United Nations declare child marriage a human rights violation.

While our gala seeks to celebrate the work of our incredible members over the past academic year, and recognize and send off our seniors, we also hope to inspire our university community to take action with us in an effort to protect children.

UNICEF at Michigan also welcomes three special guests:

Dr. Fatma Müge Göçek: Dr. Göçek is UNICEF UM's faculty advisor and Professor of Sociology at the University of Michigan.

Her research focuses on the comparative analysis of history, politics, and gender in the first and third worlds. She critically analyzes the impact of processes such as development, nationalism, religious movements, and collective violence on minorities. She is currently working on a theory book, constructing social theory from the vantage point of minorities. Learn more here.

Paul Callejas: Paul is a Community Engagement Associate for the Midwestern United States and has become an integral connection for UNICEF UM's members who are eager to take their commitment to UNICEF USA to the next level. We welcome Paul as our special guest to thank him for his immense efforts in community mobilization and youth empowerment.

Paul grew up in the Little Village neighborhood of Chicago. Being a product of the public school system, Paul believes that all youth deserve an equal chance of success. He has defeated many socioeconomic barriers as an indigenous man from Guerrero, Mexico; Paul has over six years of youth development and project planning, working with various non-profit organizations. He aspires to help as many Chicago teens reach their potential and become global citizens. Learn more here.

Keynote Speaker

Alicia Godsberg, Deputy Director of Global Programs at UNICEF USA & Keynote Speaker
Alicia has been with the Global Programs team at UNICEF USA (UUSA) since July 2016. Her portfolio covers UNICEF’s work in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) and climate, energy, environment, and disaster risk reduction (CEED); she also supervises work on UNICEF’s Health and HIV/AIDS portfolios. Prior to working at UUSA, Alicia served as the Executive Director of Peace Action New York State and was the Research Associate for the Strategic Security Program and UN Affairs at the Federation of American Scientists in Washington, D.C.
