In Honor of Jilly Wiener
Featuring Joe and the Ruckus/Anytime

MUSIC Matters is more than just a “concert club.” We are a close-knit group of like-minded students driven by passion, creativity, and a fierce appreciation for the arts and our community. We are a family that believes in the unifying power of music to support one another and make an impact. On September 2nd, we will be holding a Welcome Back concert in memory of Jillian Wiener, one of our beloved members who tragically passed this summer. Jilly was a member of the Talent & Concert Committee, always showing up to meetings with her signature wide smile, vibrant personality, and valued opinions. Her genuine love of music was apparent, inspiring us to honor her legacy in the best way we know how. We are looking forward to welcoming you back to Ann Arbor on September 2nd, from 5-8pm in the Diag. We hope to see you at this celebration of life, love, and good music to honor our special friend, Jilly.
Love, MM

LADAMA is an ensemble of women musicians from across the Americas who, as well as performing as a touring band, strive to engage youth in their respective communities in the process of music-making, composition and audio production through collaboration and performance workshops. They are Mafer Bandola (Venezuela), Lara Klaus (Brazil), Daniela Serna (Colombia) and Sara Lucas (U.S.). With rhythm and percussion driving their original compositions sung in Spanish, Portuguese and English they combine disparate, traditional roots music with pop. The result is a sonic experience through which we can view our future as a world that communicates across continents and cultures, with sound and story.

Carbon Leaf celebrated its silver anniversary in 2018 behind a new album and extensive touring. Through more than 25 years together, the group's independent music and spirit continue to resonate with its fans, and an authentic bond between the band members and their audience is evident, and nowhere more so than at The Ark. Blending rock, folk, Celtic, bluegrass and Americana into a high-energy style the group calls ether-electrified porch music, the Virginia quintet's poetic songs are brought to life with acoustic & electric guitars, mandolin, fiddle, bass, drums, cello, banjo, penny whistle, pedal steel, accordion, and rich vocal harmony. Writing and producing from their home studio in Richmond, Virginia, Carbon Leaf has released nearly 20 albums and performed 2,400+ live shows throughout their enduring career.

Ki5 Bio | Singer-songwriter and producer Kyler Wilkins, from Ann Arbor, Michigan, has been performing as Ki5 with a loop station capturing original vocal arrangements and covers since 2017. Ki5 delivers familiar genres such as R&B, pop, and folk through the lens of an a cappella singer-songwriter. His honest, empathetic, and freeing style has been influenced by Reggie Watts, Bobby McFerrin, and Bon Iver. In August 2022, Ki5 released his debut full-length album “Spirit” in partnership with the Amplify Fellowship and Christopher Porter of Ann Arbor’s Pulp had this to say about the album: “Positivity and emotional openness course through Wilkins' words, which he sings earnestly and passionately without overselling, the sentiments flowing easily and naturally from his heart.”

Ki5 is active on Patreon and all social media at “ki5loops,” and more info can be found at ki5loops.com

Lorian Janine Bio | Lorian Janine is a creative singer-songwriter from Detroit Michigan. She began playing the violin at age eight and continued to grow in her musical gift to play the guitar and drums. Although she sang in her church choir from age 11, Lorian didn’t find her own passion for singing and begin to explore her voice until 18. Lorian has put out her first single project, “Middle of the Sea,” with the Amplify Fellowship.

Rodney Crowell is one of country music's most successful songwriters, but the deadly seriousness in his music was always there for those with ears to hear. "Dad drove a stock car to an early death / All I remember was a drunk man's breath," sang Waylon Jennings as he took Crowell's "Ain't Living Long Like This" to the top of the charts. Since the turn of the millennium, Crowell has been on a roll, releasing personal, ambitious albums to wide critical acclaim. With his autobiographical masterpiece "The Houston Kid," he took an unflinching look at his own down-and-out upbringing, and he comes to The Ark with a new self-curated book of lyrics, “Word for Word”—come and pick up a copy!

Award-winning guitarist, educator, and performer Rollie Tussing makes a raggedy brand of music informed by the era of 78 rpm records, juke joints, and street performers. He composes a lot of his own songs and has a knack for reworking an old obscure tune, finding beauty in the forgotten scratches, pops and grooves of his esoteric record collection. After winning the National Slide Guitar Competition in 2001 Rollie moved with his wife to Portland, Oregon. He spent the next decade touring, performing, writing songs and playing with some of the best regional and touring musicians the West Coast offered. In 2011 with their second child on the way, Rollie and his wife decided to relocate to the Midwest to be closer to family and to tap into the artistic resources in the nation's midsection. There’s fingerstyle guitar, forgotten old music, and great old songs—a fabulous evening all around.

It’s rare for an artist to bridge the divide between critical acclaim and dedicated fan engagement. Chris Pureka is a Portland-based singer-songwriter whose body of work has resonated deeply with these seemingly disparate milieus. Her music has straddled the folk, Americana and indie rock genres over the course of her 20 year career, and over that time, her bold vulnerability in processing the intimacies of life in song has struck a chord with those listeners who crave authenticity and depth.

Chris’s elegant emotionality as a vocalist and her flair as a lyricist have garnered her favorable comparisons to Chan Marshall, Bruce Springsteen, and Patty Griffin. Over many years of touring on both sides of the Atlantic, she has shared the stage with such diverse and esteemed artists as The Lumineers, Gregory Alan Isakov, The Cowboy Junkies, Haley Heynderickx, and Ani DiFranco. She has had her songs featured on such television shows as Brothers and Sisters, Covert Affairs and Shameless, as well as a song featured in the Sundance featured indie film, The Royal Road. Along the way, Chris has remained truly independent, selling nearly 50,000 albums through her own label, Sad Rabbit Records.

It happens in the middle of Michigan in the heart of December. Since 2007, it has become a yearly tradition for The Ragbirds to present this unique family-friendly holiday show called Ebird & Friends. The songs and artists change from year to year, but the spirit of the event is community, the soul is creativity and the show is unforgettable. "Ebird"is Erin Zindle, lead singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist of The Ragbirds. Erin's budding childhood love of music was sparked at Christmastime. The holidays were the one time each year that the entire Zindle family gathered to make music together, and that early communal experience of music took deep roots. Fiddles, horns, bagpipes, guitars, and instruments from all over the world will be sounding their voices together in harmony. Expect to be entertained, surprised, cheered, and warmed by this collaborative artistic performance of new and old songs, including Ragbirds' original songs inspired by the holiday. This show has become a phenomenon—it's up to four presentations this year for its 15th anniversary, and it shows no signs of slowing down.

The Music of Fela Kuti Comes to Life! (December 29, 2022 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/101356 101356-21801264@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, December 29, 2022 8:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Michigan Union Ticket Office (MUTO)

Doubling as a platform for activism, the music of Fela Kuti was a unique blend of jazz, funk, and African influences. Performed by an African big-band of unusual instrumentation, Fela’s music rolled out in an extended, hypnotic fashion. His political vocals fell somewhere between melody and musical speech. While the Afrobeat music of Nigeria’s Fela Kuti remains singularly unique, it typically fails to gain deserved attention in the world of modern-day performance.

Join us for a rare opportunity to hear this music authentically reproduced. Originally sponsored by the University of Michigan “MCube” initiative, this performance unites UofM faculty & musicians from the Flint and Ann Arbor campuses with local professionals. The project, led by Brian DiBlassio, is based on note-for-note transcriptions of Fela’s work, with our featured artist from Cincinnati, Baoku Moses, performing the role of Fela. Ensemble members include trumpeter Ingrid Racine, tenor saxophonist Andrew Bishop, baritone saxophonist Alex Harding, guitarist Ray Ureña, bassist Ben Rolston, percussionist Jonathan Ovalle, conga player Owl DiBlassio, and Brian DiBlassio on keyboards.

The Ark's annual Crossroads Ceili is a great way to mark the turning of the year. It's a gathering of local Celtic-oriented singers, instrumentalists, and dancers, all sharing the stage to get your Celtic music year off to a good start. If you'd like to get an idea of the depth of southeastern Michigan's Celtic music scene, the Ceili is a great place to do it. Fiddler Mick Gavin, the organizer of the Ceili and a frequent performer there, was recently inducted into the Irish Music Hall of Fame.

The Yellow Room is the "brilliantly yellow" living room of Tamulevich's house on Ann Arbor's Old West Side, where gang members meet monthly for musical brainstorming and mutual critique. Tonight’s show features six Michigan songwriters: contemporary country-folk road warrior Annie Capps, Irish-American chanteuse Kitty Donohoe, four-time Detroit Music Award winner Jan Krist, Michael Hough and David Tamulevich of the "Music to Cure What Ails You" duo Mustard's Retreat, and southeastern Michigan folk veteran Matt Watroba. Come and be a fly on the wall as the exchange of creative ideas flows freely! "To have any one of these songwriters perform at Trinity House is a real treat," says promoter Bill Keith. "To have them perform together is unbelievable." The Yellow Room Gang has been around for 15 years now, with all the members coming up with new music all the while.

British guitar legend Albert Lee, regarded by many as one of the world's finest guitar players, with a career spanning more than 50 years, needs no introduction for country music, blues, and rock fans. Widely hailed for his fingerstyle and hybrid picking technique, Albert Lee helped to redefine country guitar for a whole generation of players with his song "Country Boy." Albert's many career highlights include two Grammy wins, five years in the Eric Clapton band, and stints with the Rolling Stones' Bill Wyman, The Crickets, the Everly Brothers, Joe Cocker, Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell and many more. Take it from Emmylou, who says, "When Saint Peter asks me to chronicle my time down here on earth, I'll be able to say—with pride if that's allowed—that for a while I played rhythm guitar in a band with Albert Lee." Come by and pick up a copy of Albert’s new DVD, “Live at the Court Theatre.”

When Joshua Davis performed on NBC’s “The Voice,” America at-large finally discovered what Michiganders have known for more than two decades. This amazing artist connects with a live audience, nourishes their souls and feeds off of their love. Seeing him live has always revealed his core, his essence. Joshua comes to Michigan with a new release, “Live at the Robin,” which is his first live solo acoustic release, and the intimate environment of the theater was well suited for catching him in his element. Joshua remains a quintessentially Michigan guy, drawing his inspiration from the rough-and-tumble streets of Motown to the arboreal Upper Peninsula. The mitten is his muse. “I’ve wanted to make this album for years”, says Joshua. “And I’m so excited to share it. I love playing solo shows. It allows me the freedom to dig deep into my songs and really be in the moment with the audience.”

Luke Winslow-King is a New Orleans–based guitarist, singer, composer, producer, and songwriter. His work is an eclectic mix that combines Mississippi Delta blues, folk music, traditional jazz, and roots rock and roll. His alchemical songs blend contemporary ideas with styles from bygone eras producing a sound that is rustic and urbane, elegant and entirely his own. It is a sound that looks to the past to move to the future. This, along with his burgundy voice, dapper attire and versatile guitar playing, have earned him a reputation as a musician who delivers soulfully energetic and dynamic performances.

In 2005, Tyler Hilton was cast to play the legendary rock star in the blockbuster biopic, Walk the Line (starring Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash). Now Tyler has teamed up with America’s premiere hot jazz and Western swing trio, Hot Club of Cowtown, bringing Elvis’ greatest hits from the Sun Studio years to life on the stage. The Hot Club of Cowtown has been an Ark favorite for years, but they’ve continued to break new ground since first visiting Ann Arbor in the 1990s, and this new show is no exception.

The Brother Brothers, twins, are Brooklyn's Adam and Davis Moss. Among their fans is Sarah Jarosz, who raves: "They approach their poignant and often charming songs with an almost startling sense of ease, and the tight harmonies are enough to send shivers down anyone's spine. Their ability to pull the listener into their quietly energetic musical journey is a joy to behold." The Brother Brothers come to Michigan with a new album, “Cover to Cover.”

Ever since their first meeting, over 20 years ago, Robert Jones and Matt Watroba have been musical partners. Their relationship started when they hosted back-to-back radio shows on WDET-FM, Detroit. Later on they started performing together and in doing so discovered a friendship based on mutual respect and a love for traditional American music. For Matt and Robert, American roots music (folk, blues, spirituals, work songs, chants, etc.) is music that matters. This is the music that America and the world have in common. It is music that reflects history, social change, migration, hopes and dreams. It is music that is rich and diverse, direct and powerful. This year's program is a celebration of the life and musical legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The LSO will once again perform under the baton on Yeo Ryeong Ahn, who holds the Gilbert S. Omenn Music Directorship and is a second-year doctoral student in orchestral conducting at the U-M School of Music, Theatre & Dance. She will be joined by assistant conductor Luca Antonucci, a first-year doctoral student.

All LSO concerts are free and open to the public. The Jan. 20 performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will follow all COVID-19 protocols in effect at the time for performers and audience members.

In keeping with its role as an orchestra for members of U-M’s medical, health and life science community, the LSO may ask for more stringent protocols than other events.

Djangophonique is a virtuosic, instrumentally driven quartet led by guitar player Andrew Brown. A true disciple of the style, Andrew has spent countless hours immersing himself in the language of Django Reinhardt’s jazz manouche, and he’s joined on stage by bandmates that match his skill and passion for the material. The result is a sound that’s unmistakable to fans of the music, and alluring to the uninitiated—a sound that can bring the lively energy of a Parisian dance hall to the quietest listening room or captivate a buzzing festival audience with a shimmering ballad. With respect for the tradition and a fearless creativity that bends the conventions of the style, Djangophonique is keeping the Hot Club of France revival alive and well. Harmonious Wail, from Madison, Wisconsin, opens the show with Americana-infused gypsy jazz.

Heywood Banks is simply one-of-a-kind, almost impossible to describe, with a style his very own. Equal parts genius and buffoon, this songwriter-comic-singer-poet-musician from Flint has become a cult hero and a pop icon, with a show that appeals to college students, stoners, businessmen, yuppies, rednecks, punks, kids, or your grandmother. Heywood intersperses his humorous observations of life with twisted, inventive, bizarre songs, sung and played in a variety of styles, from folk, to country to rock to pop, and way beyond. You have to be pretty smart to get Heywood at his deepest level (he demands a high level of pop culture literacy), but you can also enjoy him just for his vocal style impersonations, expert musicianship and just plain silliness. But why trust our opinions? Come and see for yourself!

Neal Francis with Danielle Ponder (January 26, 2023 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/100737 100737-21800300@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, January 26, 2023 8:00pm

On his new album, “In Plain Sight,” Neal Francis offers up a body of work both strangely enchanted and painfully self-aware, unfolding in songs sparked from Greek myths and frenzied dreams and late-night drives in the depths of summer delirium. True to its charmed complexity, the singer/songwriter/pianist’s second full-length came to life over the course of a tumultuous year spent living in a possibly haunted church in Chicago. The result: a portrait of profound upheaval and weary resilience, presented in a kaleidoscopic sound that’s endlessly absorbing.

Bravery can take many forms. For Danielle Ponder it took the shape of a leap of faith: leaving her successful day job working in the public defender’s office in her hometown of Rochester (New York) to devote herself full-time to sharing her powerful voice with the world. The singer-songwriter’s mesmerizing eight-song debut, “Some of Us Are Brave,” reinforces that her faith was not misplaced, and her leap has been rewarded with a safe landing. Written and recorded over three years, the album is a refreshingly original, shiver-inducing mix of pop, R&B, blues, rock, and moody trip-hop topped by Danielle’s celestial voice— an instrument that can plumb melancholy depths with a heartsick murmur and scrape the sky with hurricane force wails.

An interdisciplinary musical performance that highlights the turning points in the history of physics. The show combines fragments (excerpts from writings by some of the most prominent physicists in history) woven with Elfriede Jelinek’s writing which is read and interpreted by a narrator with original songs based on each fragment. The project explores the intersection between the arts and the sciences, and postulates the thesis that art and science are not antagonistic alternatives in the search for truth; rather, there is a broad territory of coexistence.

The main objective of the composition is to inspire an audience to become more engaged in arts and science by exploring the deep epistemological connection between art and science and at the same time using art as a facilitating vehicle for the teaching and communication of science.

The concert will begin with a short Q&A between Alberto Rojo, Michael Gould and Nicholas Balla followed by the premiere of the piece. The performance is located at the Keene Theater in the East Quadrangle on the University of Michigan central campus-701 East University Avenue. For more information contact Michael Gould (gould@umich.edu).

Alberto Rojo has written four books, numerous essays and popular science pieces (in Spanish), and lectures around the world on the connection between art and science. His latest book, The Principle of Least Action, History and Physics, written in collaboration with Anthony Bloch, was published in March 2018 by Cambridge University Press. As a musician, he released three solo albums and has collaborated with Latin American artists, notably Mercedes Sosa, with whom he toured extensively. He wrote and performed one of the songs of her Album Corazón Libre, recipient of the 2005 Latin Grammy Award for best folkloric album.

Michael Gould has received international recognition as a performer and scholar in the field of drumset, contemporary percussion performance and pedagogy. He has performed and given clinics all over the world. Michael has released over 100 educational percussion videos through playalongmusic.com. He has also composed and performed music for a wide range of ensembles and venues from the Münich Opera and Ballet to National Public Radio.

He has had unique collaborations with engineers, material scientists, painters, poets, dancers, athletes and business professionals. His book for the iPad-- The Drum Diaries is available worldwide through the Apple iTunes store. He is also the music director for Tangente Dance Company in Berlin, Germany. His piece Remember Me was recently performed at the Kunsthaus Dahlem in Berlin, Germany and includes dance, theater, percussion, electronics, and original artwork. He is currently Director of the Center for World Performance Studies at the University of Michigan.

Since his earliest infatuations with guitar, Carl “Buffalo” Nichols has asked himself the same question: How can I bring the blues of the past into the future? After cutting his teeth between a Baptist church and bars in Milwaukee, it was a globetrotting trip through West Africa and Europe during a creative down period that began to reveal the answer. He heard jazz in Ukraine, blues from expat African Americans in Berlin. “Part of my intent, making myself more comfortable with this release, is putting more Black stories into the genres of folk and blues,” guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist Buffalo Nichols explains. “Listening to this record, I want more Black people to hear themselves in this music that is truly theirs.” That desire is embodied in his self-titled debut album, composed largely of demos and studio sessions recorded between Wisconsin and Texas, and it marks a new stage of the blues.

He recently released his 16th solo piano album, "Night." George's compositions extend solace with an idiosyncratic grace.

As a fixture of the Michigan folk music scene for over a decade, Misty Lyn Bergeron has penned haunting melodies over simple arrangements that traverse the gothic, literary fringes of American roots music. Pulling from a wealth of vivid subject matter, her songs are cathartic and poetically rich works that approach sometimes difficult topics such as death, loss, heartache, and healing. After getting in a serious car accident in 2015, there has been a noticeable shift toward love, light, and hope in her music, while still maintaining a deep connection with the things that are lost and those that are fading. Members of The Big Beautiful include Matt Jones (drums), Ryan Gimpert (guitar and pedal steel), Carol Catherine Gray (fiddle, vocals, tambo), and Jim Roll (bass). Misty Lyn & The Big Beautiful come to The Ark with a new release, “The Narrows.”

Ask about the new generation of social justice music-makers, and Crys Matthews will be mentioned. A southeastern North Carolina native who now calls Washington, D.C., home, Crys has been compared to everyone from Toshi Reagon to Tracy Chapman and Ruthie Foster. Equally at home in an acoustic listening room as she is on stage at large music festivals, Crys quickly gathered a loyal following on the East Coast playing such prestigious venues as the Sundance Film Festival, The Birchmere, The Hamilton, and Jammin’ Java. A prolific lyricist, Crys blends Americana, folk, jazz, blues, bluegrass, and funk into a bold, complex performance steeped in traditional melodies punctuated by honest, original lyrics. “I believe in hope,” Matthews says of her latest album, “Changemakers.” “As a social-justice songwriter, it is my duty to keep breathing that hope and encouragement into the people who listen to my music.” And, from the title track to the last track, “Changemakers” does just that all while tackling some heavy topics like immigration, the opioid crisis, Black Lives Matter, and gun safety to name a few.

Bill Frisell can be a hard musician to classify. You'll find him in the jazz bins (or at the jazz link), and he's been called the most brilliant jazz guitarist since Wes Montgomery. But he's the kind of jazz musician who looks outward to other music, and his guitar can do just about anything, from any genre. It can approximate the sound of a country steel guitar, can wail the blues, can break new ground in music like Jimi Hendrix did. And he plays his own compositions, each one intricately woven into the capabilities of his instrument. As a collaborator, Bill Frisell is one of the most sought-after voices in contemporary guitar. His Ark shows have an intimacy that's hard to find at his dates in larger cities. The New York Times sums it up: "It's hard to find a more fruitful meditation on American music than in the compositions of guitarist Bill Frisell."

“It’s hard to know how people are gonna react,” Chris Knight says of “Almost Daylight,” his ninth album and first new recording in over seven years. “I’ve written songs about a lot of different things going all the way back to my first record, and some folks still think ‘somebody kills somebody’ is all I write about. Maybe that’s why I was bound and determined to get these particular songs on this album. If people like them, then we’ll be fine. But I wasn’t gonna do it any other way.” For the past 20 years, Chris Knight has only made music his own way. He’s released eight acclaimed albums, played thousands of electrifying live shows and built generations of fervent fans from Texas honky-tonks to Manhattan rock clubs. He’s been hailed as “the last of a dying breed...a taciturn loner with an acoustic guitar and a college degree” (The New York Times) and “a storyteller in the best traditions of Mellencamp and Springsteen” (USA Today). Bottom line, he’s hard-earned his reputation as one of America’s most uncompromising and respected singer/songwriters. And now with “Almost Daylight,” Knight delivers the most powerful – and unexpected – music of his career.

A haggis is a tasty Scottish dish consisting of sheep heart, liver, and lungs, mixed with oatmeal, onion, suet, and spices, and then boiled inside the sheep's stomach. The Canadian-Scots band Enter the Haggis (bagpiper Craig Downie is from Scotland) has just about as much variety in their style, a high-speed collision of Celtic music, rock, bluegrass, funk, and world music. An Enter the Haggis live show is a musical feast—dynamic and emotionally uplifting. Alternating between upbeat rock numbers with sing-along choruses and slower, more introspective alt pop songs, the band plays progressive and lyrically driven music that's strongly rooted in Celtic tradition—from the storytelling to the bagpipes. Enter the Haggis returns to The Ark with a new album, “The Archer’s Parade.”

Three masters, featured regularly at Maui’s renowned “Slack Key Show®” share the uniquely Hawaiian styles of slack key guitar and ‘ukulele, with origins in the early 19th century when Portuguese immigrants introduced the ‘ukulele to Hawai‘i and Mexican cowboys brought guitars along with their ranching knowledge. Ever since, Hawaiians have made these instruments their own. Four-time Grammy-winner and master slack key guitarist George Kahumoku Jr., known as “Hawai‘i’s Renaissance Man,” is a multiple NaHōkū Hanohano (Hawaiian Grammy) Award winner, a vocalist, storyteller, songwriter, and author, teacher, sculptor, farmer, and chef, and honored with a Hawai‘i Academy of Recording Arts 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award. “There’s something quite magical...about the evocative tones of a trusty ‘ukulele,” says the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. Slack key guitarist, lap steel guitarist, vocalist, songwriter, and producer Sonny Lim developed his guitar and vocal styles performing with his famous Lim Family of the Big Island. He was also one of the early members of the renowned Makaha Sons of Ni‘ihau for whom he played lap steel guitar beginning at age 15. He performed on the first Grammy-winning CD in Hawaiian music, and has won multiple Na Hoku Awards on his solo CDs. ‘Ukulele virtuoso Herb Ohta Jr.’s natural talent, knowledge, technique, and speed are unsurpassed. Herb’s versatility and ability to adapt to the changing times will captivate you, the listener, and transport you. Herb Ohta Jr. is the undisputed master 'ukulele instrumentalist of his generation.

With producer Mitchell Froom, Ron Sexsmith released his self-titled label debut album in 1995. The melancholic tone and sparse acoustic arrangements of the album were met with an enthusiastic endorsement from Elvis Costello, and the album was declared a critical success. In his Sept 7, 1995 review for Rolling Stone, Bud Scoppa wrote: “He just may be the most fluent balladeer to come along since Tim Hardin or Harry Nilsson.” Ron’s songwriting style evolved into a unique and timeless blend of classic pop, contemporary folk, and roots-rock idioms. He has built a steadfast reputation with critics and with some of his own songwriting heroes (Elton John, Ray Davies, John Prine, Gordon Lightfoot, Leonard Cohen and Paul McCartney) for his characteristically honest, sensitive, and enduring approach to the songwriting craft. Ron has a substantive cult following and an international touring career, and his songs as well, have been covered by the likes of Rod Stewart, Nick Lowe, Emmylou Harris, Feist, and Michael Bublé to name a few.

Since his neo-psychedelic Green On Red days, Chuck Prophet has been turning out country, folk, blues, and Brill Building classicism. His latest album, "The Land That Time Forgot," is something different, a weather vane picking up signals from outer space—or maybe from the Heartland. Priced out of his beloved hometown, San Francisco, Chuck found himself re-energized in upstate New York just a few miles from the Vermont border—and made a record that's something of a 21st-century exorcism. The songs inhabit a world where a "Fast Kid" might be on the run from the truant officer or a handsy boss ... or the Immigration Service. These are love songs that turn political on a dime ("Love Doesn't Come from the Barrel of a Gun"), and melodic hallucinations about kicking back in the Oval Office after hours "talking to my baby, saying baby, let’s not fight." Where else besides a Chuck Prophet LP are songs going to come at you from both the Tenderloin and an English roundabout, with stopovers in "Nixonland" and a lovestruck mirror on a Saturday night while a working man tries his "Best Shirt On"? There's more. Come and hear the latest from one of our favorite songwriters to have come out of the world of alternative rock.

The Steel Wheels have captured audiences across the country with their heady brew of original soulful mountain music. Based in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, this dynamic band marries old-time musical traditions with their own innovative sound. Trent Wagler's weathered tenor is joined by bell-clear four-part harmonies inspired by a shared Mennonite heritage. Add top this lively and evocative fiddle, grounded yet buoyant upright bass, and signature mandolin style, and it's no surprise that The Steel Wheels have conquered the Americana scene, becoming festival favorites and selling out venues across the country. "Americana music at its very best!" says Larry Groce of "Mountain Stage." The values portrayed in the band's music—devotion to roots, community, and family—are a way of life for The Steel Wheels, and this is reflected in everything from production process and booking agency to merchandise and touring.

A lot of people know Matt Nathanson for his 2007 hit "Come On Get Higher," but his career has only kept growing since then. He comes to Michigan with a new album, “Boston Accent,” whose stripped-down arrangements recall his beginnings as an acoustic troubadour. That’s all to the good for this show—it's not so common to hear him in a club The Ark's size. Matt has a unique sense of humor on stage that can get lost in larger venues, and we’re looking forward to welcoming him back for the first time since the pandemic began. “I wanted to make a real singer/songwriter record this time. an ‘inspired by Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, Tom Petty kinda record … which is something I've been running away from since ‘Ernst’," Matt says.

During a performance in summer 2020, Mark Erelli looked down at his guitar neck and couldn’t believe what he saw. Or rather, what he couldn’t see: his fingers on the frets. Soon after, a diagnosis of retinitis pigmentosa (RP), a degenerative eye disease, would bring some answers, but it also yielded new questions. Does diminished eyesight correlate with lesser insight? Does your songwriting change when your perception of the world around you changes? These questions, and Mark’s hunt for creative agency, are at the heart of his new album, “Lay Your Darkness Down.” In need of connection and catharsis, he turned as he often did to songwriting. “The only way I could console myself was to know that I was still going to be able to have some creative agency,” Mark says. “I could then bring whatever I was feeling or wanting to express into reality.” He began to craft songs with an intricate, labored approach like never before. “It's much more like an oil painting, where you're layering different tones and colors one at a time.”

Pitchfork called Vanessa Carlton's "A Thousand Miles" "the pop song that launched a generation of piano lessons." But Vanessa has released five albums since that song came out in 2002, each one revealing more of herself as a songwriter. “Always building up, falling apart. Love is an art," sings Vanessa Carlton on the title track of her new "Love Is an Art." Like the recording itself, the song is a meditation on the eternal seesaw that is human connection: the push, the pull, the balance, the bottoming out. It's that constantly evolving nature of love Vanessa explores, from romantic, to parental, to the friends that hold us up and the leaders that repeatedly let us down. And on tracks like the album's opener, "I Can't Stay the Same," that also includes the relationship with the person staring back at us in the mirror, each and every morning.

Altan, named for Loch Altan in Ireland's County Donegal, has arguably had a wider impact on audiences over the last 30 years than any other traditional Irish band. Their dynamic and warm live performances mix the most touching old Irish songs with hard-hitting reels and jigs, and the band members' interest in and sheer enjoyment of each other musically is apparent even to audience members new to the Irish tradition. For the Irish music enthusiast, Altan has a treasure trove of brilliant moves to offer: the mix of sounds from Donegal with outside influences, the sheer virtuosity of the players, the beauty, delicate singing, and down-to-earth charm of singer and fiddler Mairead Ni Mhaonaigh. Anywhere they go, a concert by Altan is the Irish music event of the year, and you can also pick up a copy of the group’s new book, “The Tunes.”

Darlingside (March 15, 2023 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/101863 101863-21802574@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, March 15, 2023 8:00pm

Organized By: Michigan Union Ticket Office (MUTO)

If Darlingside’s first album, “Birds Say” (2015), focused on the past through nostalgia, and their second, “Extralife” (2018), contemplated uncertain futures, “Fish Pond Fish” stands firmly in the present, looking at what’s here, now. The band has created a natural history in song—taking us into gardens, almond groves, orchard rows, down to the ocean floor and under stars.

Darlingside has long been praised for their harmonies and intelligent songwriting, described by NPR as “exquisitely-arranged, literary-minded, baroque folk-pop,” and their dynamic presence (crowded tightly together onstage) have made them a live-performance favorite. But this album showcases their broader storytelling abilities: nature is a looking glass, the songs suggest, with tracks like Ocean Bed, Green + Evergreen, Mountain + Sea, and Crystal Caving making metaphors of their titles. An experience of nature is an experience of self; an experience of self is one of natural change cut and complemented by stasis.

The band started studio recording “Fish Pond Fish” in late 2019, when they moved into Tarquin Studios—the residential studio of Grammy Award-winning producer Peter Katis (Interpol, The National). Living and working together brought them to their very early years under one roof in Hadley, Massachusetts, which had seeded the origins of their intimate collaboration. At Katis’s suggestion, many components of the initial demos were preserved as layers in the produced tracks to retain the spirit of the initial recordings, resulting in a collection of songs that is simultaneously the most bedroom-tracked and production-heavy full-length album that the band has yet released.

Atlanta-born songwriter Shawn Mullins hit it big in the late 1990s with his “Soul’s Core” album, and the all-over-the-radio singles “Lullaby” and “Beautiful Wreck.” He has never slowed down, recording for Vanguard and other labels, and performing many wonderful shows at The Ark. For the 20th anniversary of “Soul’s Core,” Shawn will revisit the music and record two new versions of the album. He is calling this “Soul’s Core Revival.” This is not a remix or a remaster of the original, but rather brand-new recordings with new arrangements of the songs—one album will be new stripped-down solo performances, some on guitar, some on piano or a cappella, and the second will be a new studio recording with his full band, Soul Carnival. Shawn’s special guests will be the duo of Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams, whose new album, “Live at Levon’s,” was recorded at Levon Helm Studios.

Sierra Hull’s positively stellar career started early. That is, if you consider a Grand Ole Opry debut at age ten, called back to the famed stage a year later to perform with her hero and mentor Alison Krauss, to be early. She played Carnegie Hall at 12; at 13 signed with Rounder Records and issued her debut, “Secrets,” and garnered the first of many nominations for Mandolin Player of the Year. She played the Kennedy Center at 16 and the next year became the first bluegrass musician to receive a Presidential Scholarship at the Berklee College of Music. As a 20-year-old, Hull played the White House. Sierra found inspiration in Krauss, Ricky Skaggs, and Sam Bush. And, just as importantly, she affirmed her own sense of identity as she continued to break new ground. “There’s a voice in the back of my head telling me to keep working, to keep moving forward,” Sierra says. “You have to keep progressing and introducing new things.”

What if the Buddha were a woman, living in our times? In this captivating new musical, which the San Francisco Chronicle called “an absolute delight,” Mama Sid is a modern-day “awakened one” with a worldwide following. But a determined young woman seeks to unearth Mama Sid’s mysterious past, exposing long-held secrets that could change everything. Epic and intimate, comic and profound, The Fourth Messenger investigates what it means to be both enlightened and human.

Hailed by TheaterMania as "a work of wit, grace and enlightenment" and The Huffington Post as “hugely ambitious and refreshingly original,” The Fourth Messenger features a richly lyrical score by internationally renowned five-time Independent Music Award-winning recording artist Vienna Teng and book and lyrics by nationally acclaimed playwright Tanya Shaffer. Featuring original San Francisco Bay Area cast member Anna Ishida as Mama Sid.

This special concert reading of The Fourth Messenger is a fundraiser for The Ark.

Directed by Giovanni Rodriguez and Tanya Shaffer. Music Directed by Rebecca Biber.

Vienna Teng is the composer of this musical, but will not perform in this reading.

Karan Casey has long been one of the most innovative, provocative, and imitated voices in Irish folk music. Since embarking on her solo career after a stint as lead vocalist of the legendary band Solas, she has released six solo albums, a duo album, and a children's album and has appeared on more than 50 albums in total. She has toured constantly throughout North America, Europe and Japan, performing solo, with her own band and with many other artists, often from outside the realm of Irish music. Her adventurous spirit results from the varied influences--classical music, jazz, and American pop--that Casey has made her own since growing up amid Irish traditional music in Ballyduff Lower, County Waterford. Karan Casey, says the Associated Press, has "a voice so beautiful, it's almost impossible to avoid falling under her spell." This tour features Niamh Dunne on fiddle and vocals and Seán Óg Graham on guitar.

Raised in Tupelo, Mississippi, among the same spirits (and some of the actual people) who nurtured the young Elvis Presley decades before, Paul Thorn has rambled down back roads, battled four-time world champion boxer Roberto Duran on national television, signed with and been dropped by a major label, performed on stages with Bonnie Raitt, Mark Knopfler, Sting, and John Prine among many others, and made some of the most emotionally restless yet relatable music of our time. With 30 years of writing, touring, and entertaining under his belt, he shows no sign of slowing down, still breaking genre barriers and topping charts, putting a new twist on his already entertaining live show. Paul is an Ark favorite who never fails to connect with Michigan audiences, and he comes to Michigan with a new album, “Never Too Late to Call,” recorded at Sam Phillips Studi in Memphis. The album, Paul says, “features music from a man who is with the “right one” and is happy to be there.”

“The hardest thing to do,” says internationally beloved soul-blues rocker Tommy Castro, “is be yourself, take some chances and bring your fans along with you.” Throughout his long, constantly evolving career, guitarist, singer and songwriter Tommy Castro has always remained true to himself while exploring, growing and creating new music, and he has taken his thousands of devoted fans right along with him. Since his solo debut in 1994, he’s made 16 albums - the last seven for Alligator - each its own unique chapter in the book of Tommy Castro. Ranging from horn-fueled R&B to piping hot blues to fiery, stripped-down rock ‘n’ roll, each release is solidly built upon Tommy’s unshakable musical foundation - a dynamic mix of 1960s-influenced guitar-fueled blues, testifying Memphis-soaked blue-eyed soul and Latin-tinged East San Jose funk, all driven by Castro’s grab-you-by-the-collar vocals and passionate guitar work. Blues Revue declared, “Tommy Castro can do no wrong.” Tommy Castro & The Painkillers come to town with a new release, “A Bluesman Came to Town.”

After a dozen acclaimed albums, virtuoso slide guitarist and bandleader Sonny Landreth found himself at an artistic crossroads. He wanted to finally create the full-length acoustic collection his fans had long requested. But he was also itching to capture the sound of his stalwart electric trio augmented by a couple of his favorite collaborators. Sonny’s "Recorded Live in Lafayette" album is a 16-song opus that covers more musical ground than any single album ever could, as the singer and songwriter's work stretches and twists across 93 minutes of full-band acoustic and electric bottleneck lightning. You can get a taste of the magic without going to Lafayette right here at The Ark—Sonny Landreth is one of the great live guitarists of our time! This time around, Sonny is accompanied by the reigning queen of the steel guitar, Cindy Cashdollar. The Suitcase Junket opens; they have a new album, “The End Is New.”

Cowboy Junkies are a Canadian alternative country/blues/folk rock band. The group was formed in Toronto in 1985 by Margo Timmins (vocalist), Michael Timmins (songwriter, guitarist), Peter Timmins (drummer) and Alan Anton (bassist). The Junkies first performed publicly at the Beverley Tavern and other clubs in Toronto’s Queen Street West, including The Rivoli. Their 1986 debut album, produced by Canadian producer Peter Moore, was the blues-inspired “Whites Off Earth Now!!,” recorded using an ambisonic microphone in the family garage. The group’s fame spread with their second album, “The Trinity Session,” recorded in 1987 at Toronto’s Church of the Holy Trinity. Their sound, again using the ambisonic microphone, and their mix of blues, country, folk, rock and jazz earned them both critical attention and a cult following. The Los Angeles Times named the recording as one of the ten best albums of 1988. In the early 1990s Margo Timmins was named one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world by People. The group has continued to tour North America, Europe, Japan and Australia. In 2008, they released Trinity Revisited in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the original recording of The Trinity Session. These days, Cowboy Junkies shows revisit old material in creative ways, but they always bring new music as well.

Tom Rush may not be as well known as some fellow veterans of Club 47 in 1960s Cambridge, Massachusetts—people like Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and Judy Collins. Yet he's second to none in terms of his impact down through the years. Tom’s three albums for Elektra in the 1960s were key founding documents of the entire singer-songwriter concept, and he's influenced everyone from James Taylor to Garth Brooks. A performer with an abiding love of being in front of an audience, Rush is a rib-tickling storyteller, an expressive singer, and a guitarist capable of real melancholy. He's a durable Ark favorite, and, says the Chicago Tribune, he's "probably the only man alive who should be allowed to sing Joni Mitchell songs." Tom Rush is, in short, folk royalty.

After 25 years in music, building an unimpeachable reputation as a truly independent artist and entrepreneur, Julian Taylor now owns his legacy. From the formative rock of Staggered Crossing to the genre fusion of Julian Taylor Band, and now his revered work as a solo singer-songwriter, Julian owns the right to it all and it couldn’t have happened at a better time. It’s rare in this era to see an artist build slowly and reach a new level of widespread acclaim two decades into a career. But Julian’s ethos, work ethic, and artistry has always had a timeless quality to it. And so, he’s built things slowly in a DIY fashion, withstanding highs and lows along the way, ultimately reaching the peak of his powers with his latest solo work. Fans and critics have noticed, granting Julian the Solo Artist of the Year honour at the Canadian Folk Music Awards (and nomination in the English Songwriter category), plus two Juno Award nominations in 2021, as well as a Polaris Music Prize nomination. And that baritone voice—you have to hear it! Julian comes from Toronto with a new album, “Beyond the Reservoir.”

NPR has called Susan Werner "folk's empress of the unexpected." Susan is a triple threat at folk awards ceremonies with her luxuriously smooth and strong voice (she's a former opera singer), riveting lyrics, and haunting melodies. "When it comes to crafting a song, Ms. Werner's only peers are Jimmy Webb and Paul Simon," raves No Depression. Susan can do it all! She's a virtuoso on both piano and guitar, and her recordings have ranged from hardcore folk to Broadway music, humorous songs, a skeptical yet sympathetic take on gospel, songs of farming, and even classical arrangements of classic rock. Susan has a way of reinventing herself for each new project, but there's a core of humor, sophistication, and musical craft that endures. Susan comes to Michigan with a unique new EP, “The Birds of Florida.”

She also took on Joni Mitchell’s Blue and covered it in its entirety. Finally, they will come together as a duo to close the night playing songs together and swapping tales of their travels and travails.

Baritone saxophonist Kaleigh Wilder has performed around the world, led her first album release, and now has plans to release two more albums as a bandleader with a New York-based record label—among several other ongoing projects.

Musicians Kaleigh Wilder, Ben Hall, Jaribu Shahid, and dancer Alexandria Davis will explore Afro-diasporic narratives that traverse oceans and endure attempts at erasure. Using rhythm, movement, timbre, melody, and cacophony, The Story Cuts Across What the Map Cuts Up celebrates what could not be subjugated or relegated to the margins. A continuous performance of original compositions, improvisations, and movement invites the audience to imagine not the physical map, but the stories that connect and produce our futures.

Gonzograss stalwart Keller Williams brings back his "Shut the Folk Up and Listen" series with one of his favorite folk gurus, Steve Poltz. As Keller said in 2016 when he kicked off this seated evening of song and stories concept with Leo Kottke and again in 2018 with Martin Sexton, "I take great pride in the evolution of my career. Between all the electronic toys and all the eclectic people that allow me into their worlds, this set goes back to the beginning. Guitar and microphone. Loopless. I focus on material that can be enjoyed while sitting and listening. Not necessarily slow songs but instrumentals and lyrics that are often overlooked when performed in venues with no seats. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy those venues and look forward to hopefully playing them for the rest of my life. This set focuses on the listening rather than the dancing and the socializing. You'll hear songs you recognize and a few you won't. I may even hit you up for a request. All in all, its a loose night in comfortable chairs with acoustic music. So shut the folk up and listen. Please.” You can expect one set from each artist and a collaborative endeavor at the end. A seated evening of song, story and if all goes well, laughter.

For more than forty years, Riders In The Sky have been keepers of the flame passed on by the Sons of the Pioneers, Gene Autry and Roy Rogers, reviving and revitalizing Western music. And while remaining true to the integrity of the genre, they have themselves become modern-day icons by branding it with their own legendary wacky humor and way-out Western wit, and all along encouraging buckaroos and buckarettes to live life “The Cowboy Way!” Riders In The Sky are stars of the stage, screen, the Grand Ole Opry, National Public Radio, Sirius/XM Satellite Radio, Saturday morning TV, and are the only exclusively Western artist to have won a Grammy Award. They truly are "America's Favorite Cowboys!”

Hoodang is David Rossiter, Sophia Hanifi, and Dave Keeney. For nearly two decades, Hoodang has been mesmerizing audiences with its unique blend of dark, driving, off-kilter alt-country music. The band writes songs, often in the first-person, of people tarnished by bad blood and bad luck who still find ways to make it through to the next town, day, marriage, con, or bottle. Blending a driving, fingerstyle rhythm guitar sound with a thrumming bass, chiming electric guitar, hammer down percussion, and soaring vocal harmonies, onstage Hoodang’s comfort zone has been a spontaneous, careening edge that plays off the moment, the mood, and the room.

Stella! was founded by Jo Serrapere in 2009 to showcase country-roots songwriting and three-part harmonies. Their first album “Sorry, Stella,” was recorded in 2011 with Jo, Jen Sygit and two other former bandmates in NYC. Since then the band has performed for numerous folk festivals and concert series in the Great Lakes region. Julianna Wilson joined the band soon after. Stella! has just released their second full length album, "Stella! Tells the Truth."

Loudon Wainwright III, or LW3 for short, is a cherished icon of American folk music, a darkly witty and touchingly personal songwriter and storyteller. He started out in the folk clubs of New York and Boston before going on to a long career that's encompassed both music and acting. He has given birth to over 20 albums (as well as fathering some very successful musical offspring), written folk classics including "Dead Skunk" and "The Man Who Couldn't Cry," and created music for film and theater. Loudon comes to Michigan with a brand new album, "Lifetime Achievement."

Carrie Newcomer weaves her life and her art together, with music, community activism, and personal concerns all playing a role. She's one of those people who exudes a spirituality that's all her own, and she has to be seen in concert to be truly appreciated. Says novelist Barbara Kingsolver: "She's a poet, storyteller, snake-charmer, good neighbor, friend and lover, minister of the wide-eyed gospel of hope and grace." And you can forget all that and just luxuriate in her incredibly rich alto voice! Carrie has traveled to India and performed as a U.S. cultural ambassador, and local religion journalist David Crumm, writing on the ReadTheSpirit website, named her to his list of "10 Spiritual Sages to Watch." Carrie comes to Michigan with a new album, "Until Now."

Location: Hill Auditorium
Organized By: University Musical Society (UMS)

The UMS Choral Union invites you to take part in the return of Summer Sings. Just come as you are to this no-audition, no-performance evening of memorable music-making!

As many as 250 singers from southeastern Michigan, northern Ohio, and Canada have joined each session in singing through great choral repertoire with some of the nation’s most respected choral conductors and outstanding soloists.

This year, Summer Sings returns to join the community together over a rhythmic masterpiece, Carmina Burana.

You probably know the first five chords of Carl Orff’s legendary Carmina Burana as you’ve likely heard these notes in many forms of popular entertainment, though you may not have heard the story of what inspired them: the scandalous writings of some mischievous monks and a revolutionary composer who turned those musings into music.

UMS’s Choral Union Music Director and Conductor Scott Hanoian prepares the Grammy Award-winning chorus in performances with the world’s finest orchestras and conductors and will help direct the evening of community engagement. Portions of the score will be rehearsed during the first half, followed by a break for refreshments, and then singers re-convene to sing through the entire work.

Please arrive early at 6:30 pm for registration.
