This year, for our second annual gala, UNICEF-UM is focusing on ending child marriage in the United States of America. UNICEF defines child marriage as "a harmful practice and a violation of child rights and believes that marriage under age 18 should be prohibited in all circumstances, everywhere." Both UNICEF and the United Nations declare child marriage a human rights violation.

While our gala seeks to celebrate the work of our incredible members over the past academic year, and recognize and send off our seniors, we also hope to inspire our university community to take action with us in an effort to protect children.

UNICEF at Michigan also welcomes three special guests:

Society has become increasingly reliant on digital technology, but public infrastructure has not yet evolved to support and enable these social, commercial, and municipal needs. Industry migration to renewable energy and Big Data continues to alter the way we live and work, and growing demand for connected, electric, and autonomous vehicles will require more than ever-more-expensive vehicles traveling on poorly maintained, deteriorating traditional roadways. Our aging transportation infrastructure needs to be transformed and digitized to support public demands for existing technology and enable the evolution of those needs over future generations. Leveraging new approaches to digital infrastructure, data analytics, and modern financing reduces a daunting task into an approach that revolutionizes public infrastructure while incentivizing sustainable planning and implementation strategies.

A panel discussion will follow the lecture, featuring Rick Geddes, Professor, Department of Policy Analysis and Management at Cornell University, and Tim Slusser, Chief of Mobility Innovation for the City of Detroit.

Our co-sponsors include CCAT, UMTRI, Mcity, Integrated Roadways, the City of Detroit and the Cornell Program in Infrastructure Policy.

Speaker:
Dipak Kalra, PhD, FRCGP, FACMI, FBCS
President, The European Institute for Innovation through Health Data
Professor of Health Informatics, UCL and Visiting Professor, University of Gant
One of the strongest drivers for Learning Health Systems in Europe right now is the urgency to strengthen health systems resilience through accelerated digital health transformation. This is a direct reaction to the struggles all of our health systems had during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Up to now digital health innovation has occurred in a rather piecemeal way, often through pilots that fail to scale up or be sustained. There is a real gap in the understanding of how digital health solutions, especially patient empowerment for disease self-management through smart technical solutions, can be appropriately targeted to the right patients, influence care pathways in an efficient and safe way, become culturally embraced by clinical teams and accountably adopted by healthcare provider organizations. There are several initiatives and opportunities in progress in Europe to accelerate the adoption of digital health technologies and to support the dissemination of good practices, which will be discussed during this talk.
In parallel, equally urgent, is the recognition that health data must be better used to support learning at scale, for example to be better prepared to gather intelligence rapidly as a lesson learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, and the need to accelerate research that can deliver innovative treatments, devices and algorithms. Many European countries have embarked upon establishing a national or regional health data infrastructure and ecosystem that enables the reuse of data for research. Most exciting of all, the European Commission has announced a multibillion program to establish a European Health Data Space (EHDS). An important success factor for this will be public trust, and therefore getting the governance model right for wide scale data reuse is critical. This talk will explain the approaches being taken across Europe to scale up the ability to analyze large volumes of health data, including its governance, and how the EHDS is anticipated to catalyze a step change in that scale of learning from health data.

Investigating Factors Influencing Automated Vehicles Overtaking Bicycles: Perspectives from Drivers and Bicyclists (July 27, 2023 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/108987 108987-21820687@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, July 27, 2023 1:00pm
Location: Transportation Research Institute
Organized By: Center for Connected and Automated Transportation

Bicyclists and motor vehicles share the same roads, yet there is currently no reliable technology available that assists drivers in safely overtaking bicyclists while also being acceptable to bicyclists themselves. Additionally, there is a lack of clarity regarding the critical factors involved in overtaking, as perceived by the various stakeholders.

To address these issues, this study aimed to develop computational decision-making models for car-to-bike overtaking and assess relevant factors influencing this overtaking behavior. The models considered the presence of oncoming traffic and designated bike lanes. An experiment was conducted using simulation technology, gathering subjective assessments from both drivers and bicyclists. The findings revealed disparities in satisfaction and perception of different overtaking scenarios between drivers and bicyclists.

Furthermore, the study identified significant factors influencing their subjective ratings and investigated the reasons behind these inconsistencies. The research emphasizes the importance of considering the perspectives of both drivers and bicyclists when developing car-to-bike overtaking features. The insights gained from this study will contribute to the establishment of guidelines aimed at protecting vulnerable bicyclists on the road.

Rodents, including rats and mice, assumed unprecedented roles in medical research and practice during the three decades before and after the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1949. With their lives and deaths, these tiny animals contributed to a rodent revolution in Chinese medicine by producing therapeutic compounds, as well as insights about the relationships among pathogens, drugs, and people. A multispecies perspective on the development of the life sciences helps to dissolve the artificial boundaries of nation and species in which we conventionally frame history.
The welfare of people and lab rodents in China were inextricably connected both to each other and to humans and other animals around the world. Drawing from scientific reports, military records, and oral histories, this paper shows first how people bred and raised animals to produce biological medicines including vaccines and blood sera. Taking malaria as a case study, the paper also shows how researchers in the Vietnam War-era Project 523 used animals to develop and test drugs, connecting the insights of Traditional Chinese Medicine to those of biomedicine.

Clinical prediction models aim to predict a person’s risk of an outcome (e.g. complications, mortality) given their observed characteristics (1). Risk predictions are traditionally derived from regression models. Artificial Intelligence, and specifically Machine Learning methods, are gaining interest to develop predictive algorithms. Predictions from classic models or AI algorithms need to be reliable to provide valid support for tasks such as shared decision making and whether a person should initiate a particular treatment.
The aim of this talk is to review recent developments in prediction model development and validation. Illustrations will be provided from different medical applications. Trustworthiness will be discussed in relation to the statistical aspects -such as sample size and the exceptionality of patients-, model uncertainty, and heterogeneity between contexts of practical application.

The Inherent Tension between Managerial and Professional Knowledge (October 27, 2023 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/114361 114361-21832791@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, October 27, 2023 1:30pm

Professional workers, especially in health care and education, are among the least happy, most burnt-out categories of workers. This should be surprising, given that what they do is inherently meaningful, and that the content of their work is interesting and engages skills that most people find intrinsically rewarding to exercise. I argue that the discontent of so many professionals is likely due to their increasing proletarianization. As professionals become increasingly submerged as employees in large organizations, often operated on a for-profit basis, they suffer losses of professional autonomy. The organizations they work for operate on a managerial logic that disdains and suppresses the kinds of local, personal, practical knowledge that professionals cultivate and need to exercise to do their jobs well. I explore the contrasts between the kind of knowledge managers use to pursue organizational goals and the kind of knowledge professionals use in their everyday interactions with patients, students, and clients, to explain the pervasive burnout of professionals in large organizations.

A Platform Rating System and Vulnerable Workers: Evidence from Field Experiments in Singapore (November 10, 2023 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/114388 114388-21832822@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, November 10, 2023 1:30pm

How to enhance the working conditions and wellbeing of vulnerable workers is a topic of growing importance. This study examines the use of two-sided labor market platforms as a private governance solution to protect vulnerable workers in contexts where the power dynamics between employers and workers are highly unequal. Specifically, we collaborated with a Singapore-based online platform that connects foreign domestic workers with employers (families). In this setting, it is not uncommon for workers to be mistreated by employers via various forms of exploitation and abuse. The collaborating platform was interested in exploring whether introducing a new rating system that allows workers to rate employers could improve this situation for workers. Accordingly, we randomized communication about such a rating system and examined how each side of the platform reacted. We found that employers did not respond positively to the rating system, though their negative reaction was offset if they were nudged to consider the instrumental benefits of the intervention for them. Surprisingly, workers also disliked the idea of the rating system, despite it being intended to protect and empower them. Post-hoc analysis and interviews suggest that the most vulnerable workers were particularly concerned about the employer-rating system. Our paper illustrates that, in settings with large power differentials, platform governance mechanisms intended to help vulnerable workers could have unintended negative consequences. It thus highlights the importance of understanding the nuanced determinants of vulnerable workers’ challenges when considering whether platform governance might improve or exacerbate them.

How to crip the dictionary: A pedagogical proposal for ancient language study

This talk combines a meditation on the politics of Greek-English lexicography with a proposal for a speculative pedagogical collaboration called the “Anti-Lexicon.” The essential aim of the Anti-Lexicon is to challenge and expand the range of meanings that make themselves available to twenty-first century students and scholars of ancient languages and cultures, with awareness of the implicit exclusionary ideologies that have operated within the history of the discipline of Classics. Steeped in questions emerging from disability justice, crip pedagogy, and the language(s) of disability, this talk invites students and teachers of Classics to consider how we might practice non-traditional acts of lexicography as inclusive collaborations geared toward cultivating more nuanced understandings of ancient linguistic meaning in the classroom.

Death and Its Afterlives: De/composing Boundaries
28th Annual CLIFF Conference
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
March 8-9, 2024
Keynote Speaker: Dr. Luciana Chamorro, Department of Anthropology, University of Michigan

Full schedule and abstract descriptions linked here: https://lsa.umich.edu/complit/news-events/all-news/search-news/everything-you-need-to-know-about-this-year-s-cliff.html

From necropolitics to ecological decline, from digital dead links to haunted sites, from the material ruins of late capitalism to the allegorical decay of “late style,” this year’s CLIFF conference seeks to de/compose the boundaries between the living and the dead. We hope to bring together a diverse set of critical interests and disciplines on a terrain where death and precarious (after)lives lay bare the politics of exclusion, the erosion of memory, and the ethical responsibilities that confront us in the face of current crises. Our graduate student-organized conference aims to foster interdisciplinary dialogues; we welcome researchers, independent scholars, and artists to join us in exploring death, rebirth, and the in-between.

For our 28th annual conference, the Comparative Literature Intra-student Faculty Forum (CLIFF) invites 15 minute presentations based in literary analysis, critical theory, history, politics, anthropology, translation studies, and interdisciplinary work. These presentations may take the form of academic papers, creative work, performance, and/or visual media.

We are very pleased to announce that this year’s keynote speaker will be Dr. Luciana Chamorro, professor of Anthropology at the University of Michigan. Dr. Chamorro is a socio-cultural anthropologist studying revolution and its afterlives in the Central American region and its diasporas. Her work includes research on political revolution and violence, desire and affect, generational difference, states of exception, and feminist and queer imaginaries of the future.

If you are planning to attend this event and need accommodations, please notify the organizers by February 22, 2024, so that proper arrangements can be made. The organizers can be contacted at cliff.complit@umich.edu.

Our conference is entirely organized by graduate students in the University of Michigan's Department of Comparative Literature. This year's organizing members are Arianna Afsari, CC Barrick, Delsa Lopez, and Sanjana Ramanathan.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is among the most prevalent chronic human health disorders and the most common form of
arthritis. Specific mechanisms associated with the joint destruction during OA are largely unknown. Due to the
lack of biomarkers, it is impossible to identify patients exhibiting early stages of OA, leading to severe joint
destruction. Furthermore, due to poor understanding of the underlying disease mechanisms, no approved
disease-modifying therapies to treat OA exist. Therefore, early detection and early intervention is critical to
restore joint functions.
My translational research program is directed towards:
(1) Understanding the complex cellular and molecular mechanisms associated with joint destruction during
osteoarthritis
(2) Identifying reliable biomarkers for early identification of patients with osteoarthritis to enable early
intervention using our large-scale OA biobank that we have created (over 150,000 banked specimens)
(3) Identifying novel therapeutic targets to stop/delay osteoarthritis and restore joint function

I lead a group 8 scientists in the Skeletal/Connective Tissue Diseases Therapeutic Focus Area at Regeneron. Using Velocimmune mice and other antibody technologies my team develops reagents and bioassays for the screening and selection of therapeutic antibodies and other engineered biomolecules. We also leverage human genetics for target discovery by functionally model disease associated variants in vitro and in vivo. Our work to understand the molecular mechanism of ACVR1 mutations in Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP) demonstrated that Activin A is both a necessary and sufficient driver of Heterotopic ossification in FOP using an anti-Activin A blocking antibody prevented heterotopic bone formation in a ‘genetically accurate’ mouse model of FOP. Regeneron has completed Phase II trials and is in Phase I studies in FOP.

Location: Power Center for the Performing Arts
Organized By: TEDxUofM

TEDxUofM’s 15th annual conference is all about the theme “Golden Ratio”. First discovered in 300 BCE, the golden ratio has been a mathematical distillation of beauty for centuries. Not only has it been embraced by artists, appearing in famous works like the Mona Lisa and Parthenon, the golden radio has been ever-present in the natural world, from the smallest flower to the largest spiral galaxy. Our speakers’ talks will encourage our audience to slow down and see the inherent splendor around them amidst a modern, fast-paced world. With our first speaker headliner confirmed for the year, TEDxUofM is curating a lineup of thought leaders committed to sparking game-changing conversations.

During the conference, you will have the opportunity to listen to world-renowned UofM and Ann Arbor members who are immensely successful in their fields. They will share their "ideas worth spreading" in their TEDxUofM talks and you have the opportunity after the conference to potentially meet or network with them.

There will also be lab activities before and during intermission that you will interact with. In the past, we have had activities such as a Partnership Lab between Google and TEDxUofM, where attendees had the opportunity to try Google's Cardboard VR headsets, and another year, we had a lab where attendees got to make their own perfume scents.

We’re excited to be featuring 7 amazing speakers this year! Here’s some more information:

Carhartt’s VP of Global Product Design, Ben Ewy- Empathetic Design is Sustainable Design 🌀🌱🎨
A University of Michigan Athletic Trainer, Claire Coates- The Bane and Beauty of Athletic Injury 💪🩹⚖️
The Deputy Director of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, Daniel Högsta- The Myth of Nuclear Weapons: Stories that Shine Through the Mushroom Cloud 🕊️🌍🏆
A University of Michigan English professor, Noha Beydoun- The Personal Path to Anti-Racism 📚🌐🤝
The former New Yorker Cartoon Editor, Robert Mankoff- AI & Comedy 📰🖥️🤣
A distinguished MSNBC / NBC News Anchor, filmmaker, and author, Richard Lui- Selflessness Post Covid and Taking Care of Others 🎬📖🤝
A Tony Award-winning actress and end-of-life doula, Celia Keenan-Bolger- Embracing Mortality to Enrich Life 🎭💀🧘

Stay tuned for fabulous performing groups and entertainers, as well as inspiring lab activities! Also, look forward to our goodie bags being given out to all attendees! 🎁

The mission of Building Power is to center community knowledge in the fight against white supremacist delusion. Often in academic spaces, we do not learn from the activists, community leaders and organizers doing the work in our communities. We want to flip this narrative and provide a space for community leaders to be the teachers, and for students to engage in this type of learning in an accessible way. In the 7th Annual Building Power Conference, we will dive into topics surrounding disability justice, sustaining communities, and community organizing.

Bitexts in Glocal Perspective: Towards an Intellectual History of Buddhist Translation in Early Modern Southeast Asia (March 4, 2024 2:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/119345 119345-21842591@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, March 4, 2024 2:30pm

Between the late fifteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Southeast Asian intellectuals produced an enormous quantity of bilingual compositions, or bitexts, that combine passages in Sanskrit or Pali with glosses into a local vernacular, be it Burmese, Khmer, Lao, Thai, or a host of lesser-known languages. Drawing on examples from throughout the region, this talk shows how the influence of these bitexts extended well beyond the Buddhist sphere, shaping the study of grammar, literature, and the sciences across early modern Southeast Asia. Bitexts not only facilitated the study of South Asian thought, but built a platform for Southeast Asians to compose in a fresh, cosmopolitan idiom that afforded the circulation of ideas across a diverse set of vernacular tongues. Taking a glocal perspective—at the intersection of local and global forces—on these modes of reading, writing, and performance allows us to appreciate how Southeast Asian intellectuals made a distinct and enduring contribution to the history of translation.

The current generation of college students has experienced unprecedented stressors in their lifetime – including trauma, violence, and a pandemic – that have changed the ways we provide treatment and other support services. College campuses across the U.S. continue to see rising rates of stress, anxiety, depression, and burnout, with many college students meeting the criteria for at least one mental health problem.

The 2024 Depression on College Campuses Conference: A New Generation aims to look at the evolution of college mental health over the past 20 years and discuss innovative ways higher education is responding to unique student needs today while looking ahead to the future.
