The Center for World Performance Studies presents Sonya Belaya's multidisciplinary piece *Cognitive Distortions, Ancestral Patterns*, a multidisciplinary performance that uses cognitive distortions to understand the experiences of immigrant women artists as it relates to assimilation, segregation, and mental health care. Alongside research of social work practices with immigrant communities, Belaya documents the expertise of these artists to examine communal care of immigrant women in the United States.

Featuring filmed interviews of immigrant women artists living in New York City, live video projection mixing, movement, and music written for string quartet + jazz quintet. Sonya Belaya in collaboration with Laura Sofía Pérez, featuring Grey McMurray and students at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance.

Sonya Belaya is a Russian-American pianist, singer, composer, and improviser, who divides her time between Michigan and New York. Committed to multiplicity, she is a diverse music-maker invested in vulnerable art and the development of strong, personal collaborations. Her work centers on the integration of womxn’s trauma as musical narrative, with a focus on storytelling as a symbol of powerful vulnerability. Sonya is a 2020-2021 Resident Artist at Roulette Intermedium, made possible by the Jerome Foundation. She has performed as a pianist and singer with members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, New Music Detroit, Wild Up, Michigan Opera Theatre, Russian Renaissance, and Bang on a Can All-Stars. Sonya’s lead project is “Dacha”, an octet flowing freely through influences of creative music, jazz, folk, and contemporary music. The ensemble seeks to preserve and re-contextualize the ancestral memories of Russian folk traditions. Consisting of musicians from diverse music backgrounds, the project uses storytelling and improvisation as a governing principle to transcend these differences for deeper musical dialogue. Dacha was born out of a necessity to find a sense of home and belonging, when Belaya’s mother went missing in 2014. This resulted in the first project, “Songs My Mother Taught Me”, a five song cycle released in May 2019. Belaya released a second album with the ensemble, “Dacha: Live at Roulette”, in September 2020.

Laura Sofía Pérez is an interdisciplinary artist who works in video, film, sound, and installation. She received her MFA in Film/Video from California Institute of the Arts. Her work draws from feminist and avant-garde cinema, phenomenological philosophy, Caribbean Postcolonial theory, and ancestral knowledge. She often works in collaborative settings of experimentation and improvisation with artists of varying disciplines and backgrounds to voice common perspectives on political, cultural, and social issues. Recent artist residencies and programs include La Práctica at Beta-Local, San Juan, Puerto Rico (2019), BAiR Emerging at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Banff, Canada (2020), and the AfA Masterclass: Radical Care with Terike Haapoja (2020).

Marc Hannaford, Assistant Professor of Music Theory and CWPS 2022 Faculty Fellow will share about his ongoing research into African American music theorists.

Hannaford will share some of the details of his archival research into the music theoretical work of Mary Lou Williams and Sonny Rollins. Examining unseen sketches, scores, and unpublished book drafts from these two giants of Black American music, Hannaford suggests some of the ways that music theory functions in Black creative practice, as well as how it helps affirm Black life and agency.

The Center for World Performance Studies Faculty Lecture Series features our Faculty Fellows and visiting scholars and practitioners in the fields of ethnography and performance. Designed to create an informal and intimate setting for intellectual exchange among students, scholars, and the community, faculty are invited to present their work in an interactive and performative fashion.

A female duo that creates musical performances, *I Broke the Vase* (Eva Matsigkou, Nefeli Sani) make small rituals that are linked to their music, but also to their spiritual and bodily pursuits. They apply processes, such as deep listening, sound exploration, free improvisation, phonetic expression, speech, composition, site-specific projects and anything else that can contribute to the desired result, trying to overcome the barriers of censorship and musical and/or social stereotypes. They use instruments, objects, microphones, electronics, voices, recordings and loops.

From Athens, Greece, *I Broke the Vase* will visit the University of Michigan as part of a visiting artist/scholars residency supported by the School of Music, Theatre & Dance.

An interdisciplinary musical performance that highlights the turning points in the history of physics. The show combines fragments (excerpts from writings by some of the most prominent physicists in history) woven with Elfriede Jelinek’s writing which is read and interpreted by a narrator with original songs based on each fragment. The project explores the intersection between the arts and the sciences, and postulates the thesis that art and science are not antagonistic alternatives in the search for truth; rather, there is a broad territory of coexistence.

The main objective of the composition is to inspire an audience to become more engaged in arts and science by exploring the deep epistemological connection between art and science and at the same time using art as a facilitating vehicle for the teaching and communication of science.

The concert will begin with a short Q&A between Alberto Rojo, Michael Gould and Nicholas Balla followed by the premiere of the piece. The performance is located at the Keene Theater in the East Quadrangle on the University of Michigan central campus-701 East University Avenue. For more information contact Michael Gould (gould@umich.edu).

Alberto Rojo has written four books, numerous essays and popular science pieces (in Spanish), and lectures around the world on the connection between art and science. His latest book, The Principle of Least Action, History and Physics, written in collaboration with Anthony Bloch, was published in March 2018 by Cambridge University Press. As a musician, he released three solo albums and has collaborated with Latin American artists, notably Mercedes Sosa, with whom he toured extensively. He wrote and performed one of the songs of her Album Corazón Libre, recipient of the 2005 Latin Grammy Award for best folkloric album.

Michael Gould has received international recognition as a performer and scholar in the field of drumset, contemporary percussion performance and pedagogy. He has performed and given clinics all over the world. Michael has released over 100 educational percussion videos through playalongmusic.com. He has also composed and performed music for a wide range of ensembles and venues from the Münich Opera and Ballet to National Public Radio.

He has had unique collaborations with engineers, material scientists, painters, poets, dancers, athletes and business professionals. His book for the iPad-- The Drum Diaries is available worldwide through the Apple iTunes store. He is also the music director for Tangente Dance Company in Berlin, Germany. His piece Remember Me was recently performed at the Kunsthaus Dahlem in Berlin, Germany and includes dance, theater, percussion, electronics, and original artwork. He is currently Director of the Center for World Performance Studies at the University of Michigan.

It is motivated by the question, "How do Indigenous creatives produce work while navigating the constraints of existing networks of production and forge new networks in the process?" In this talk Hughes will explore the process and practices mutually developed between the artists and scholars of the team. Attending to the ways communication, goals, skills, investments, and commitments align and misalign she will articulate the process the team is undertaking and the challenges inherent in building an equitable, ethical, and reciprocal research project.

The Center for World Performance Studies presents the Naghash Ensemble in residence March 7-9, 2023, culminating in a public performance at the Keene Theater. The Naghash Ensemble combines the earthy spirituality of Armenian folk song, new classical music, contemporary post-minimalism, and the energy of jazz and rock. Three brilliant female vocalists and some of Armenia’s finest instrumentalists on duduk, oud, dhol, and piano play new music based on sacred texts by the medieval Armenian mystic poet and priest, Mkrtich Naghash.

Written by Armenian-American composer John Hodian, The Naghash Ensemble’s “Songs of Exile” is a meditation on man's relationship to God from the perspective of a monk forced to live in exile for many years. Part folk music, part classical, and deeply moving.

Mike Monford got an early start on his love for music digging through his father's jazz and R&B albums, DJing at parties through his teen years, then picking up the saxophone as his instrument of choice. Taking private lessons and being mentored by jazz legend Teddy Harris Jr., Mike took in the scene and began performing at some of Detroit's best known jazz clubs. In 1997, Mike was awarded a musical scholarship to the University of Hartford - Hart School of Music. While studying on the east coast under the great saxophonist Jackie McClean, Mike traveled to New York and performed and recorded with jazz greats including - but not limited to - Bill Lee, Marc Cary, and Hakim Jami. Mike spent some 20 years in New York honing his talents, and entrenched in the history and sounds of jazz. Armed with his experience as a performer, composer, and arranger, "Perseverance", Mike Monford's debut CD as a band leader was released in 2012. His sophomore album "The Cloth I'm Cut From" is being released June, 2023.

The Center for World Performance Studies presents Autophysiopsychic Millennium in residence March 28-30, 2023, culminating in a public performance at the Keene Theater. Autophysiopsychic Millennium is a creative research music collective that explores, experiments, and studies the music methodology, and philosophical and spiritual works of the late Dr. Yusef abdul-Lateef.

As a collective of Black and BIPOC musicians, Autophysiopsychic Millennium is pushing back on the use of the over-commercialized term “jazz,” and reclaiming the genre through the teachings and wisdom of Dr. abdul-Yusef Lateef, who was a deeply spiritual intellectual and stressed the depth and intentionality of this music.

Curated by Detroit's LuFuki and Chicago’s Angel Bat Dawid and Dr. Adam Zanolini, Autophysiopsychic Millennium presents educational workshops and performances (Sonic Convocations) in which participants are invited to intentionally engage as a way to bring Dr. Lateef's methodology into the new millennium.

CWPS Faculty Lecture Series with Henry Stoll (September 19, 2023 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/110660 110660-21825222@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, September 19, 2023 6:00pm
Location: East Quadrangle
Organized By: Center for World Performance Studies

Henry Stoll, Assistant Professor of Music and CWPS 2023 Faculty Fellow will discuss his ongoing project to reconstruct the first opera from Haiti, *L'entrée du Roi, en sa capitale* (The Entrance of the King in His Capital). Published in 1818 by Juste Chanlatte (1766-1828), a prominent Haitian poet and man of letters, the opera represents a remarkable achievement in Haitian music and letters and has, until now, remained unheard among contemporary audiences.

Examining scores and libretti from a variety of libraries and archival institutions, Stoll delves into his creative process and considers some of the challenges inherent in bringing this music to life. Excerpts of this ongoing work will be heard.

Free and open to the public.
