The annual Summer Lecture Series at the University of Michigan Biological Station explores scientific topics and celebrates notable achievements. Our lecture series is free and open to the public, allowing interested community members to learn more about the natural world, and the Biological Station.

Pettingill Endowed Lecture in Natural History - Global change impacts on forest ecosystems: Amplifying Indigenous voices to find community-driven solutions

Eastern US forests are losing a foundation tree species, the eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadenis), due to the exotic insect pests hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae) and elongate hemlock scale (Fiorinia externa). The widespread destruction of this important evergreen conifer has large ramifications for ecosystem processes and other species that depend on it for survival. Using an "accidental experiment" initiated by patch-level timber harvesting ~30 years ago in western Massachusetts, Dr. Ignace will present the impacts on source/sink carbon dynamics, which may be exacerbated by a warming climate. Building on this framework, she will discuss how we can center Indigenous voices and knowledge to fully understand local land use history. Going beyond the peer-review publications and moving to include many forms of writings, knowledge sharing, artwork, and communication will be needed to find community-driven solutions to environmental problems.

Here Nor There is a new solo exhibition by multidisciplinary artist and environmentalist Kristina Sheufelt. Sheufelt is based in Detroit, Michigan, and recently received her MFA from the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design. In Here Nor There, Sheufelt uses a variety of media to blur the lines between land and body.

For the past several years, Sheufelt has spent her summers living in remote backcountry locations throughout the United States working on research projects ranging from self-directed study of emotional psychology in the wilderness to monitoring marine wildlife populations. In Here Nor There, Sheufelt processes the emotional and ecological implications of returning to life in the city between reunions with the wild.

Kristina Sheufelt received her BFA from the College for Creative Studies in 2013 and her MFA from the University of Michigan in 2022.

Peter Gelderloos and StopCampGrayling on Strategies for Ecological Revolution from Below (November 7, 2022 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/100819 100819-21800388@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, November 7, 2022 5:00pm
Location: Haven Hall
Organized By: Comparative Literature

Global warming, climate change, the ecological crisis. Tipping points, extinction events. Conservation, green fascism. Carbon footprint, carbon offsets, carbon capture, neocolonialism. How we talk about the disaster is strongly related to how we respond to it, and how we understand it. Is it a countdown to an impending future event, a danger we are beginning to see the early signs of, or a catastrophe that has been ongoing for at least 500 years? The answer to these questions, and the language we use to pose the questions, can determine whether we consider a proposed response to the problem as compelling or completely absurd, whether a delusional half-measure or an exaggerated non-sequitur. The fact that, faced with the same problem, people lack a common language and reach such polarized viewpoints, has become a structural part of the problem itself.

Peter Gelderloos, author of The Solutions Are Already Here, will discuss how centrist approaches like conservation and carbon capture, and even approaches considered progressive like the Green New Deal, are responses to the needs of the current political and economic system rather than responses to the actual crisis that is unfolding. Moreover, there is strong evidence that our current system of government and capitalism is inherently and integrally ecocidal, that under any political program it would lead to broadly similar results as regards the ability of our planet to support life. As a result, standard approaches to dealing with the disaster will ignore or suppress the kinds of movements and solutions that are our greatest hope. This event will tie this analysis with exactly these kinds of movements, groups that offer a strategic horizon for facing our intersecting and most pressing challenges.

Peter will be joined by local activists from StopCampGrayling, a new initiative campaigning against the proposal to grant 162,000 acres of public lands, water, and forests to Michigan’s National Guard, a proposal threatening to destroy precious habitats, poison water sources, and increase militarization, all while expanding the army base at Grayling to twice the size of Chicago.

Organized By: Complex Systems Advanced Academic Workshop (CSAAW)

To thrive in a changing world, evolving populations must be able to generate variants adapted to future environments. In one environmental state, however, there is no direct selection pressure on a population to make adaptive variation more accessible. Whether natural selection can drive evolving organisms to manifest this adaptive variation, and become more evolvable, is widely debated. Using a simple instance of evolution, we show that evolvability is favoured when a population evolves in a changing environment. We also highlight a novel mechanism through which populations evolve to access relatively higher amounts of adaptive variation under these conditions. This mechanism is not sufficiently explained by natural selection but is rather a combination of deterministic selection dynamics and stochastic search of the genotype space during evolution. Thus, we demonstrate that evolvability can and does evolve, and could play an important role in the adaptation of living systems to a changing environment.

The Oxford University Museum of Natural History began a large redisplay project in April of this year, with the goal of developing and installing 20 new permanent exhibits in the main court of the Museum. I traveled to Oxford University for my UM Museum Studies practicum to digitize these new displays using structured light scanning technology to create interactive, 3-D models of the objects located within the new exhibits. This project aims to improve both public access to the OUMNH museum space and also begin a digital collection for researchers at Oxford University and beyond.

Dr. Soundara Viveka Thangaraj (Viveka) is a postdoctoral fellow in the lab of Dr. Vasantha Padmanabhan in the Department of Pediatric-Endocrinology at the University of Michigan.

She received her PhD in Genomics and Oncology, from the University of Madras, India. Her research centers around the developmental programming effects of pre-natal exposure to environmental chemicals, on long-term metabolic health of the offspring, using omic tools.

In the current research, she has utilized a translationally relevant, real-life, low-dose, chronic chemical exposure model, in which sheep are exposed to biosolids which is a source of real-life mixture of environmental chemicals.

Abstract: Rates of trait evolution vary markedly across the tree of life, from the accelerated evolution apparent in adaptive radiations to the remarkable evolutionary stasis exhibited by so-called "living fossils". Identifying and understanding the causes and consequences of such "rate heterogeneity" has critical implications for robustly testing evolutionary hypotheses and, more generally, elucidating how and why levels of phenotypic diversity vary across space, time, and taxa. For my dissertation, I am developing novel phylogenetic comparative methods for inferring variation in rates of continuous trait evolution. These methods will fill key gaps in the comparative biologist's toolkit and provide researchers with more power and flexibility in exploring and dissecting rate heterogeneity across the tree of life.

Our weekly lunch seminar series featuring internal speakers in the field of ecology and evolutionary biology. This seminar will be in-person and livestreaming on Zoom (link this page).

Our weekly seminar series featuring internal and external speakers in the field of ecology and evolutionary biology. This seminar will be in-person and livestreaming on Zoom (link this page).

Abstract:
Research in our lab asks how nervous systems can be both strikingly flexible and remarkably robust, and how these phenomena simultaneously give rise to widespread similarities and incredible diversity in behavior. We use integrative approaches to address these questions across levels of biological organization and timescales, using charismatic frogs as a model system. The talk will provide a conceptual framework as well as data-driven background for ongoing projects in the lab, exploring mechanisms of inter- and intra-specific variation in parental behavior and juvenile aggression in poison frogs.

Controlling stochastic biophysical processes, from protein folding to evolution (March 14, 2023 11:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/105666 105666-21812662@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 14, 2023 11:30am
Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: The Center for the Study of Complex Systems

Abstract: The chemical reaction networks that regulate living systems are all stochastic to varying degrees. The resulting randomness affects biological outcomes at multiple scales, from the probability that a single protein molecule successfully finds its folded state to the evolutionary trajectory of a population of cells. Understanding how the distribution of these outcomes changes over time is often difficult, and achieving control over this distribution via external interventions is an even more complex challenge. Intriguingly, this problem has close parallels in a very different domain: manipulating quantum states for applications like quantum computing and cold atom transport. In this talk we show how one can translate quantum control into the classical realm of biology, giving us a novel tool for steering biological processes. We illustrate this idea through two examples: the first is controlling the distribution of genetic variants in an evolving cellular population. This is motivated by recent efforts to combat antibiotic resistance via therapies that guide the evolution of pathogens toward maximized drug sensitivity. The second example involves controlling the distribution of protein folding states using so-called molecular chaperones: protein enzymes that facilitate the unfolding or disaggregating of misfolded proteins. The theoretical framework behind these two examples is quite general, and can in principle be used in many other biophysical problems. Finally, we discuss ongoing work to explore the thermodynamic costs associated with control.

For more info and to apply: https://www.cew.umich.edu/advocacy-initiatives/twink-frey-visiting-social-activist-program

Each year the Twink Frey Visiting Social Activist (TFVSA) Program brings to CEW+ a social justice activist whose work affects women and recognizes gender equity issues. One goal of the program is to build the capacity and effectiveness of social activists by giving the TFVSA time, space, and support to work on a project that would not be possible under the activist’s usual working circumstances.

The TFVSA program gives the selected TFVSA time for reflection, research, planning, and writing related to their area of activism. Each TFVSA is required to work on a project that will advance their future work and potentially benefit other activists.

If selected, the applicant is invited to reside near campus for up to one month or make intermittent visits to Ann Arbor and work remotely. The 2024 residency will take place during the winter semester with a presentation of their project the following fall semester at the CEW+ Annual Advocacy Symposium. The activist receives a $10,000 stipend to cover their expenses while in Ann Arbor. Travel expenses to and from Ann Arbor are separately reimbursed by the endowment fund.

ELIGIBILITY

The TFVSA program supports activists whose work addresses gender equity issues that affect the lives of women and/or girls. The program defines social justice and equity programs broadly to include activism in such areas as housing, employment, income support, food security, education, violence, child care, health care, and employer benefits like paid sick leave and retirement income.

18th Annual Early Career Scientists Symposium (March 31, 2023 9:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/104175 104175-21808557@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 31, 2023 9:30am
Location: Matthaei Botanical Gardens
Organized By: Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

The Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) at the University of Michigan invites you to attend the 18th Annual Early Career Scientists Symposium (ECSS). This year, we are excited to announce the theme “Global Change and its Consequences for Green Life.” Green life (i.e. plants, algae, microbes) form the basis of productivity in most ecosystems. Understanding how environmental change can impact the ecology and evolution of green life on earth is critical to the future of most communities, ecosystems, and human societies.
The theme includes, but is not limited to:
1. Direct and indirect impacts of environmental change on green life survival, reproduction, and distribution
2. How green life can buffer the impact of global change
3. Evolutionary responses of green life to environmental change/stress
4. Green life functional traits and their environmental correlates
5. Agroecology

The 2023 ECSS will be held on the 31st of March 2023 at the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Garden in Ann Arbor, MI. Six early career scientists will be selected to present their work, and two keynote speakers will be featured. The symposium will also have an afternoon poster session with featured lightning talks and ample time for networking during coffee breaks.

For the chosen talks, we consider early career scientists as senior graduate students (who stand to receive their Ph.D. within two years), postdoctoral researchers, faculty or staff scientists within their first or second year, and researchers at equivalent career stages who are not affiliated with an academic institution.

We are living through multiple simultaneous global crises, so vast and complex that they seemingly defy sense. During such times, good communication can help people understand the brutal realities of the present while equipping them with necessary hope in a brighter future. Drawing from their decades of experience, from conservation to COVID reporting, Liz Neeley and Ed Yong will discuss the art and science of sense-making in a time of crisis, and why it's crucial to the challenges that we face.

**Copies of Yong's books will be available for sale, along with a book-signing opportunity, immediately following the presentation.**

*The LSI's SciComm Speaker Series highlights the importance of disseminating scientific findings beyond the walls of the academy and effectively communicating the impact of publicly-funded research. This annual event provides world-leading science writers and communicators with an opportunity to share their experiences with faculty, staff and students, while also tapping into U-M's vast scientific research community.*

**Liz Neeley** is the founder and principal of Liminal Creations, a design firm focused on science and communication. She is fascinated by blending the power and beauty of the art with rigorous research on how people make sense of the world around us. Until September 2020, Neeley was the Executive Director of The Story Collider, where she focused on true, personal stories of science told live on stage. Over the past fifteen years, she has specialized in environmental science, journalism, policy and social media, always searching for the best ways of spreading ideas through complex networks.

**Ed Yong** is a science staff writer with The Atlantic. He was awarded the 2021 Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting for his crucial coverage of the coronavirus pandemic, and was named “the most important and impactful journalist" of 2020 by Poynter. He anticipated the course of the virus, the complex challenges that the U.S. faced, and the government’s disastrous failure in its response. He is the author of two New York Times bestsellers, An Immense World and I Contain Multitudes. Before he joined The Atlantic, Ed’s writing was featured in National Geographic, The New Yorker, Wired, The New York Times, Nature, New Scientist, Scientific American and other publications.
