Jennifer Nehil (Molson Coors) and Ralph Mertz (Anheuser-Busch InBev) - Flavor Chemistry, Brewing, Performance Metrics, Global Strategy (December 6, 2021 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/89703 89703-21665063@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, December 6, 2021 6:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Bio-Tech, Entrepreneurship, and Coding Organization

On Monday, December 06, 2021 @ 6:00PM-7:00PM ET, come virtually listen to Jennifer Nehil (UM MS Chemistry; former R&D Technician and Chemist at BASF; current Brewing Material and Flavor Chemist at Molson Coors) discuss the brewing process, innovation and new product selection, and flavor chemistry, and Ralph Mertz (UM BS Mechanical Engineering; former Chrysler Engineer and Anheuser-Busch IT, Operations & Engineering Manager, and Financial Planning Leader; current Anheuser-Busch Global Vertical Operations Finance and Strategy Senior Director) discuss standard company performance metrics, corporate investments and collaborations, asset management, and a global strategy case study. The event will conclude with an open Q&A.

Anheuser-Busch InBev, or AB InBev, is a publicly-traded multinational drinks conglomerate headquartered in Belgium. It’s the world’s largest beer brewer by both volume and revenue, operating more than 600 beer brands in 150 countries. AB InBev was formed in 2008 through the acquisition of Budweiser brewer Anheuser-Busch by Belgian conglomerate InBev—which is itself a merger of Stella Artois-maker Interbrew and Brazil’s AmBev. In 2015, AB InBev acquired its biggest rival in North America, SABMiller, for $107 billion. The deal required the sale of a number of SABMiller brands, including Miller and Coors, to satisfy antitrust regulators. In recent years, acknowledging the consumer trend away from mass-produced lagers, AB InBev has rapidly acquired U.S. and international craft brewers including Goose Island, Blue Point, and Camden Town Brewery. Some of its popular brands include Budweiser, Michelo, Corona, Bush, and Natural Light. Learn more at https://www.anheuser-busch.com/about.html .

Molson Coors is a publicly-traded multinational drinks conglomerate with twin headquarters in Golden, Colorado, and Montreal, Canada, though officially considered a U.S. firm. In sales, it holds the number one position in Canada, the number two rank in the United Kingdom, and the number three slot in the U.S. Coors Light, the firm's biggest-seller, is the fourth best-selling beer in the United States; Molson Canadian is the best seller in English-speaking Canada; and Carling ranks as the best-selling lager in the United Kingdom. Other key brands include Blue Moon, Dos Equiz, and La Colombe. In 2005, it was formed through a merger of two companies with deep roots — Molson Inc., established in 1786, the oldest brewery in North America; and Adolph Coors, established in 1873 — both of which were still under control of their respective founding families. Following the merger, the Coors and Molson families jointly controlled Molson Coors, each holding one-third of the voting power. Learn more at https://www.molsoncoors.com/about .

This event is co-hosted by two student organizations: business-focused Bio-Tech, Entrepreneurship, and Coding Organization ("BECO") and engineering-focused Food Industry Student Association ("FISA"). Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Planet Blue Student Leaders

Hello!

We are reaching out on behalf of the Planet Blue Student Leaders’ Off-Campus Housing Team. We are launching a pilot project on fridge organization for off-campus housing students. If you are a student living in off-campus housing and share a fridge with others, this project might be for you!

Did you know that, on average, each off-campus college student produces 38 pounds of food waste a year (RecyclingWorks)? With food prices steadily rising (about 6.8% in 2021 alone, according to the US Bureau of Labor) this can make a serious impact on student budgets.

Our aim is to empower students to organize their fresh and refrigerated produce and food to save money, make food last longer, and reduce food waste. To do this, we’ll provide you with an information packet (complete with fridge organization best-practices, roommate conversation starters and conflict resolution guides, and helpful tips), an educational fridge magnet, and labeling stickers.

If you’re interested in participating or would like to know more, please fill out this form (bit.ly/3qt3crx) or send an email to Ella (ellalars@umich.edu), Meghana (mtummala@umich.edu), Allison (axjiang@umich.edu), or Ari (ariannek@umich.edu). We look forward to working with you!

Best,

The PBSL Off-Campus Housing Team

American Gene Technologies (AGT) is a private company developing and commercializing genetic medicines targeting major diseases, including HIV/AIDS, Phenylketonuria (PKU) and Hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer, or HCC). Its drug candidates have achieved initial proof of concept in preclinical studies, are in clinical trials, and have potential to deliver cost-effective therapies that are better targeted and more potent with fewer side effects. AGT’s drugs will treat symptomatic diseases, but are intended to provide durable cures that extend the length and improve the quality of patients’ lives using its unique gene-delivery platform.

Brazil at a Crossroads: Environmental and Food Politics Under the Bolsonaro Regime

When Jair Bolsonaro, a right-wing populist, was elected as Brazil's president in 2018, people began wondering about the consequences of that election for the environment, food systems, and trade, among many other social and ecological issues. In this lecture series, Hannah Wittman, Gustavo Oliveira, and Susanna Hecht will explore the impacts of the Bolsonaro regime on food security and agroecology, on the conservation of the Amazon forest, and on international trade with China, as well as bright spots of resistance and innovation towards sustainability.

Dr. Hannah Wittman | Agroecology as Resistance: Visualizing rural-urban networks in a time of erasure

Agroecological transitions in Brazil are challenged by inequitable access to land, contested politics about how to “feed the world while cooling the planet” and high levels of uncertainty on how to adapt to changing markets, consumer dietary preferences, and climate change. Using examples from participatory research on digital agroecological certification in Brazil, I examine the potential of a new grassroots science that aims to make diverse, equitable, and sustainable agroecological landscapes legible, to support both political recognition of agroecology and solidarity networks between rural and urban communities.

Upcoming Speakers:

The Togetherness: QTBIPOC Gatherings are a collaboration between MESA and the Spectrum Center focusing on centering the experiences of Queer, Trans, Black, Indigenous, and Students of Color through sharing meals, discussions, and creating connections with people in the QTBIPOC community at UM and in the surrounding areas.

This event’s host will be Raivynn Smith. Raivynn Smith is an Adult Services Librarian at the Durham County Library in Durham, NC. Born in Ohio, they have moved around quite a bit in pursuit of education and the perfect scoop of ice cream. They previously worked at the Spectrum Center, and would love to talk about doing anti-oppressive work and maintaining boundaries in libraries and higher education with whoever is interested! When not roaming the stacks, they enjoy reading (of course!), listening to almost every genre of music, going for hikes, baking, and hanging out with their partner and dog.

The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, the School for Environment and Sustainability, and the Sustainable Food Systems Initiative present:

Dr. Gustavo de L.T. Oliveira | The geopolitics of Brazilian soy in the age of Bolsonaro and the US-China trade war

Soy plays a major role in the development of Brazilian agribusiness, and in turn in Brazilian geopolitical power as well. It is the basis for much Brazilian land ownership in neighboring countries, and extension of political influence in Africa. It was also instrumental in Brazil’s insertion into a “new multi-polar world order”, balancing trade with China even while the US dollar and North Atlantic transnational companies maintained control over soybean markets. But recent events call for a reevaluation of the geopolitics of Brazilian soy. First, access to abundant Brazilian soy enabled China to withstand the trade war with the US, responding with counter-tariffs on US soy. But while this could have enabled Brazil to extract geopolitical gains, the election of Jair Bolsonaro as president of Brazil fractured the political power of the soy sector. While, soy farmers and truckers defend Bolsonaro’s domestic and international agenda, restraining ties with China and accusing Europeans of blocking Brazilian development through environmentalist charades, soy processing and trading companies have broken with Bolsonaro, who undermines their efforts to attract Chinese capital for infrastructure construction in Brazil while projecting a palatable eco-modernist image of Brazilian agribusiness for European markets. Thus, a critical geopolitics of Brazilian soy calls for more nuanced account of the transnational class articulations and global environmental politics that shape and are shaped by this extraordinary oilseed.

In this webinar, RC Lecturer and photographer Isaac Wingfield will interview Professor Aisha Sabatini Sloan and her father, photographer Lester Sloan, about the making of their latest co-authored book and how the visual and creative arts, history, and family ties guided their project.

Photographer and poet Rachel Eliza Griffiths notes, “In this rich meditation with [Lester Sloan’s] gifted daughter, author Aisha Sabatini Sloan, we find ourselves in a narrative of discovery and revelation. Sloan’s photographs are necessary instruments of history, as is the palpable sensation of love between himself and his daughter.”

The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, the School for Environment and Sustainability, and the Sustainable Food Systems Initiative present:

Dr. Susanna Hecht | From Ecocatastrophe to zero deforestation and back again: A natural experiment in environmental governance

From 2004 to 2012 Brazilian deforestation dropped by 80%. This involved several institutional, political, and market dynamics that structured “socioambientalism” as part of the development practice for Amazonia. While widely lauded, several other “adverse forces” were at work, and in any case, the cerrado (Brazilian savanna) was falling under the tractors of massive soy and sugar expansion. With the rise of Micheal Temer, and the election of Jair Bolsonaro, the configuration and politics changed dramatically. The central question now is whether processes that support forests and forest livelihoods can be reactivated? For a number of reasons, probably not.

The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, the School for Environment and Sustainability, and the Sustainable Food Systems Initiative present:

Karen A. Flack is a Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. She received a bachelor’s degree from Rice University, a master’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley and a Ph.D. from Stanford University, all in Mechanical Engineering. Professor Flack teaches courses in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and design. Her research focuses on turbulent boundary layer physics with a concentration on rough wall boundary layers and frictional drag prediction. Recent work also includes performance characteristics of tidal turbines in unsteady flow conditions. She is on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Heat and Fluid Flow, Experiments in Fluids and Flow Turbulence and Combustion. She is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and has received the following: an ASME award for best paper in the Journal of Fluids Engineering, a Pi Tau Sigma teaching award, the Naval Academy Research award and United States government meritorious service medals.

Significant progress has been made towards the understanding of rough-wall boundary layers and the subsequent drag penalty. Continued progress is promising since a larger range of parameter space can now be investigated experimentally and numerically. Recent advances in rapid prototyping techniques enables the generation of systematic variations of roughness scales and computationally efficient simulations with creative surface mapping techniques allows for experiments and computations to investigate similar complex roughness. While a universal drag prediction correlation is still elusive and may not be possible, predictive correlations for classes of surface roughness pertinent to engineering applications seem achievable. Three surface parameters based solely on surface statistics are showing promise in predictive correlations for a range of studies. These include a measure of surface elevation a slope parameter and the skewness of the surface elevation probability density function. Other candidate parameters that may be useful in a predictive correlation or a surface filter are the streamwise and spanwise correlation lengths. The challenges to represent this wide range of surface conditions and potential scales to characterize engineering roughness including biofouling in predictive correlations will be discussed.

The average American employee changes jobs 12 times, spending nearly 90,000 hours in employment across their lifespan, according to data collected in 2019. The COVID - 19 pandemic has sharply increased the number of workers changing, losing or retiring from their jobs, which creates an unprecedented opportunity for job seekers who may be considering a career change. Current students actively choosing a course of studies and contemplating post-degree careers paths, may also be reconsidering direction. Navigating change can be both exciting and challenging, and always easier with information and support.

Join CEW+ for a delicious breakfast and a lively conversation featuring a panel of remarkable women. They will share wisdom and insights from their rich career journey, including experiences in diverse fields and across career changes. In keeping with CEW+’s foundational history of honoring both personal and professional identities, the topics selected for the panel will provide an opportunity for each panelist to speak holistically about their career and life experiences.

Following the inspiring panel, there will be time to ask questions, tour CEW+, and learn how we can support you. In addition, workshop participants will be encouraged to continue the conversation about their own career trajectory. Building relationships that offer the opportunity to engage in a reciprocal process of sharing and acquiring information, and giving and receiving support is the key to building a robust network.

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is a veritable cornucopia of delicious dishes. Over the centuries, the shared food knowledge and passion of Native Americans and immigrants of all kinds produced the region’s iconic foods and beloved restaurants. Mackinac Island remains the epicenter for fine food. Here one can dine on freshly caught trout and whitefish at the Grand Hotel before tracking down the island’s celebrated fudge for dessert.

Afield of the island, visitors and residents alike can attend a Friday night fish fry virtually anywhere in the area, savor a juicy “Big C” burger at one of the many Clyde’s Drive-In locations or just have a refreshing glass of beer at Tahquamenon Brew Pub in aptly named Paradise. Author and award-winning historian Russell M. Magnaghi delves into the delectable food history of the Upper Peninsula.

- A deeper knowledge of the issue and an opportunity to discuss your thoughts.
- Information about how your vote in local offices can affect the issue.
- Additional resources you can use to learn more.
- Free food! Virtual attendees receive a $15 gift card as a thank you for participating. You'll have an opportunity to select from a list of restaurants/stores at the end of the event. You are welcome to participate in as many dinners as you like, though gift cards are limited to one per student per topic.

During the sessions, we will hear from campus partners as they share tools, resources, and knowledge that may support our well-being.

Our final Flourish event will take place on Wednesday, October 4th from 6-7:30 PM. Join psychology interns Zubin Devitre and Joe Rizzo, and assistant director of CAPS Jamye Banks for a discussion on how to take care of yourself mentally. A boxed meal will be provided. We hope to see you there!
