Organized By: Center for World Performance Studies

Friday, April 1 | 8:00 PM
The Keene Theater, East Quad
701 E. University Ave.
Free and open to the public

Center for World Performance Studies will host Jonathan Scales, one of the most innovative steel pannists on the planet, redefining and challenging traditional expectations of his signature instrument. In his hands, the sonic palette of an instrument often associated with cruise ships and tropical resorts is radically expanded to mimic the role of horns, piano, vibraphone or marimba due to his stunning, virtuosic technique.

Although Scales’ writing produces songs that are ultimately accessible and danceable, the compositions can be remarkably complex and difficult to perform. As a result, the power trio whimsically named Jonathan Scales Fourchestra has always had a fluid lineup of top-notch musicians.

Guests entering the Keene Theater must wear a face covering.

With the empty space, we acknowledge the book’s white saviorism that rang in the new era of colonial oppression and cultural genocide called the “(Dutch) Ethical Policy." The books in our new canon crowd out Multatuli’s empty space in the same way that the other materials on display, such as the sound of the carillon score of Gold Coast composer, Charles E. The exhibit continues with collections of materials that show the Dutch program’s comparative approach to Dutch Studies, one that connects histories and cultures and creates understanding through familiar frames of reference. Our collection of Anne Frank materials is supplemented with U-M Professor of History Rudolf Mrázek’s comparative work on the “model camps” of Theresienstadt (Nazi) and Boven Digoel (Dutch). The last part of the exhibit highlights the speakers scheduled to deliver lectures at an end-of-semester anniversary symposium.

Please join us at the annual Out of the Darkness Campus Walk that AFSPUM is hosting at the University of Michigan this Spring!

This event takes place nationwide and brings together those who are affected by suicide and those who support them, to raise awareness and much-needed funds, strongly send the message that suicide is preventable, and that remind others that no one is alone.

It will take place on Sunday, April 3rd, 2022 at Ferry Field, Ann Arbor with the opening ceremony kicking off the event at 10am. We’d love for you to join us and spread the word :)

Students, staff, alumni, and community members can register for the walk for FREE, form a team, and invite others to join you at www.tinyurl.com/uofm2022ootd.

There is no required fundraising minimum, although any amount you and your networks are able to contribute helps invest in suicide prevention research and educational programming.

Together we can change the conversation and create a world without suicide. It’s up to Walkers like us to make a difference. We look forward to seeing you at the Walk!

In 1956, 11 years after proclaiming Indonesia’s independence from 350 years of Dutch occupation, the first president of Indonesia, Sukarno, received an honorary doctor of civil law degree conferred by U-M President Harlan Hatcher. As we celebrate fifty years of Dutch at the University of Michigan with this exhibit, we trace our paths toward a new frame for Dutch Studies — one that emphasizes colonial repair and rethinks which voices matter. View the exhibit in the north lobby of the Hatcher Library.

About the exhibit:

In the section titled “A New Canon," the exhibit includes an empty space where the novel Max Havelaar by Multatuli would be, the “top 10” book touted to have “ended colonialism." With the empty space, we acknowledge the book’s white saviorism that rang in the new era of colonial oppression and cultural genocide called the “(Dutch) Ethical Policy." The books in our new canon crowd out Multatuli’s empty space in the same way that the other materials on display, such as the sound of the carillon score of Gold Coast composer, Charles E. Graves, or the voice of Indonesian forerunner of colonial reparations, Jeffry Pondaag, drowns out the spaces left blank by Willem Janszoon Blaeu’s maps, which reside in our U-M Library collections but are purposely not displayed.

A translation of Leendert van der Valk’s article “1619” on the Dutch foundations of U.S. slavery lies next to Marjolein van Pagee’s Banda: De Genocide van Jan Pieterszoon Coen, an analysis of the 1621 Dutch genocide and enslavement of the Bandanese people.

Citizen Responses to Poor Quality Urban Water Service: A Political Economy Approach
Alyssa Huberts, Harvard University

Monday, Apr. 4, Open Talks will be held noon to 1pm, and the Grad Workshops will be held 1 to 3pm.
In-person in ISR-Thompson 6050
Presentations will also be available online via Zoom

Abstract:
How do citizens respond to intermittent or unreliable water? In classic models of electoral accountability, urban residents that experience low quality services will punish local officials at the polls. Using the case of Mexico City, I show how a range of intervening factors – including a decentralized structure for water provision, a lack of clarity for "who is to blame", and citizens' own investments in household storage capacity – significantly complicate the link between the provision of high quality services and electoral payoffs. I also show how a dynamic set of interactions – including 311 requests, Twitter shaming, and even small-scale street blockades – create incentives for politicians to focus on "firefighting" problems with the water grid, rather than investing in longer term changes.

This is a part of the Research Center for Group Dynamics (RCGD) Winter 2022 Series - "Water Ways: New Social Science, Science Studies, and Environmental Approaches to Water"

This is also a part of the class Anthrcul 558 section 002

The 26th Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners, a project of the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan, showcases the work of incarcerated artists living in Michigan prisons. The work is by men and women from all 26 state prisons in both the upper and the lower peninsulas: 25 men’s prisons and 1 women’s prison. This year there are 714 works in two and three dimensions, including portraits, tattoo imagery, landscapes, fantasy, and wildlife as well as images about incarceration and visions that are entirely new. We invite you to enjoy the work and, if you like, make a purchase. All proceeds, minus necessary taxes and fees, go directly to the artists.

Gallery hours for the exhibit are Sunday–Monday: 12:00 PM–6:00 PM, Tuesday–Saturday: 10:00 AM–7:00 PM

Giving Rare Populations a Voice in Public Opinion Research: Pew Research Center’s Strategies for Surveying Muslim Americans, Jewish Americans, and Other Populations
April 6, 2022, noon ET via Zoom

Speaker: Courtney Kennedy, Director of Survey Research at Pew Research Center

Abstract:

A typical public opinion survey cannot provide reliable insights into the attitudes and experiences of relatively small and diverse religious groups, such as adults identifying as Jewish or Muslim. Not only are the sample sizes too small, but adults who speak languages such as Russian, Arabic, or Farsi (and not English) are excluded from interviewing. This presentation discusses how Pew Research Center has sought to address this research gap by fielding large, multilingual probability-based surveys of special populations. Examples include the Center’s 2017 Survey of Muslim Americans and the 2020 Survey of Jewish Americans. These studies present numerous challenges in sampling, recruitment, crafting appropriate questions, and weighting. The presentation will also discuss the Center’s methods for studying racial and ethnic populations with the goal of reporting on diversity within these populations, as opposed to treated them as monolithic groups.

Bio:

Courtney Kennedy is director of survey research at Pew Research Center. Her team is responsible for the design of the Center’s U.S. surveys and maintenance of the American Trends Panel. Kennedy conducts experimental research to improve the accuracy of public opinion polls. Her research focuses on nonresponse, weighting, modes of administration and sampling frames. Her work has been published in Public Opinion Quarterly, the Journal of Survey Statistics and Methodology and the Journal of Official Statistics. She has served as a co-author on five American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) task force reports, including chairing the committee that evaluated polling in the 2016 presidential election. Prior to joining Pew Research Center, Kennedy served as vice president of the advanced methods group at Abt SRBI, where she was responsible for designing complex surveys and assessing data quality. She has served as a statistical consultant for the U.S. Census Bureau’s decennial census and panels convened by the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine. Kennedy has a doctorate from the University of Michigan and a master’s degree from the University of Maryland, both in survey methodology. She received bachelor’s degrees from the University of Michigan in statistics and political science. Kennedy has served as AAPOR standards chair and conference chair.

Mindfulness Meditation is a skill that can be learned and when practiced has the power to enhance a sense of wellbeing, focus, and interconnectedness. As we all continue to navigate uncertainty and challenges that are inherent in the act of being human, we benefit from and are grateful for diverse cultures and traditions across the globe. Collectively they have passed on a wide variety of contemplative practices that encourage reflection, silence, and centering into the present moment to help us cope and better respond. Engaging in contemplative practices support the individual, by cultivating a sense of awareness and well-being, and benefit society by enhancing one’s capacity to create connection and community, and to become an agent of positive social change. There are many forms of contemplative practices, including meditation. Mindfulness meditation is one form aimed to help focus our awareness on the present moment as it unfolds, moment to moment, without judgment. Research on mindfulness continues to find a wide range of benefits. In short, Mindfulness may be viewed as cognitive training that bolsters our ability to handle stress, poor mood, and threat. It also increases our capacity to focus our attention on what is most important to us and to be more compassionate to ourselves and to others.

On Wednesdays from 12:15 - 12:45 pm, we come together in community to practice this skill in an open and supportive virtual space. Whether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. Join this supportive community and experience the gift of present moment awareness.

Data science and AI are having a significant impact on society in uncountable ways, leading to huge benefits in many cases. Yet, increasingly complex analytical pipelines working with poorly understood heterogeneous data sets can give rise to harms in many ways. Furthermore, there could be deleterious systemic effects such as the magnification of disinformation or surveillance capitalism. There has been tremendous recent interest in understanding and managing these concerns.

Abstract:
The understanding of strongly-correlated quantum matter has challenged physicists for decades. The discovery three years ago of correlated phases and superconductivity in magic angle twisted bilayer graphene led to the emergence of a new materials platform to investigate strongly correlated physics, namely moiré quantum matter. These systems exhibit a plethora of quantum phases, such as correlated insulators, superconductivity, magnetism, Chern insulators, and more. In this talk, Professor Jarillo-Herrero will review some of the recent advances in the field, focusing on the newest generation of moiré quantum systems, where correlated physics, superconductivity, and other fascinating phases can be studied with unprecedented tunability. He will end the talk with an outlook of some exciting directions in this emerging field.

Professor Pablo Jarillo-Herrero from MIT studies novel condensed-matter systems and is especially well-known for his pioneering work with twisted bilayer graphene.

He has received the 2020 Wolf Prize in Physics and the 2020 Buckley Prize in Condensed Matter Physics, among many other honors.

The usual pandemic-related caveats apply, but we are currently anticipating an in-person lecture and a remote feed as well.

Kenneth Kiesler and Eugene Rogers, conductors

Acclaimed composer and U-M alumnus James Lee III was offered the inaugural commission of a ten-year commissioning project launched in 2020 by USO music director Kenneth Kiesler and SMTD aimed at diversifying the orchestral repertoire. Tethered Voices, a powerful and impactful piece for narrator and orchestra, is a setting of a striking poem by conductor and poet Kalena Bovell. While the USO recorded Tethered Voices during separate recording sessions with each orchestra section in September of 2020, this will be its first live-concert performance. Director of University Choirs Eugene Rogers leads the premiere of Damien Geter’s Justice Symphony for choir and orchestra, a work that centers on anthems of the civil rights era. It was commissioned by the University of Michigan and the Washington Chorus. The USO, joined by University Chamber Choir, University Choir, Orpheus Singers and vocal soloists, brings the 2021-2022 season to an exhilarating and affirmative conclusion with Mahler’s magnificent and inspiring Resurrection Symphony.

Abstract:
In this presentation a team of researchers from the University of Michigan and the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians Archive and Records Department discuss the land and schooling of the Anishinaabek—the Three Fires of the Odawa, Ojibwe, and Potawatomi. Of particular focus is the spread of Euro-American schooling among the Anishinaabek from the early 1800s through 1950. We trace the establishment of schools in the early 1800s and the growth of literacy and school attainment from the 1850s through 1940. In addition to considering schooling levels and trends of the Anishinaabek at the national level, we examine state differences, and focus on one particular group, the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians, who today live in Waganakising—the Land of the Crooked Tree—located in the northwest portion of the lower peninsula of Michigan.

I raised myself from the sand and, without bothering either to take off my shoes or roll up my cuffs, walked into the surf to let the waves lap at my ankles.” What does it mean to tell a story? Who is the storyteller, who is listening? What real geography is surrounding us and what landscape do we imagine in our stories?

Devised Dance/Theatre piece inspired by short stories by Haruki Murakami and many more

Directed by: Tzveta Kassabova with the cast

“And then I realized that the deep darkness inside me had vanished. Suddenly. As suddenly as it has come.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Saturday Morning Physics

Black holes are massive objects so dense that the gravitational force holds light within a distance called the event horizon. This strong gravitational force also causes black holes to grow as energy is converted into the black holes' mass. Steven Hawking explored this flow of energy bringing the science of thermodynamics and the concept of entropy to black holes. A black-hole's entropy, a thermodynamic measure of the information hidden within the event horizon, is proportional to its surface area. This remarkable finding points to analogies between these spacetime singularities and systems of particles, such as gasses. In this talk, Professor Pando Zayas will describe how Quantum Mechanics alters this picture, making corrections to the black-hole entropy that affects black-hole physics.

Watermarks and the Ordinary
Sarah Vaughn, U.C. Berkeley

Monday, Apr. 11, Open Talks will be held noon to 1pm, and the Grad Workshops will be held 1 to 3pm.
Join us via Zoom.

Abstract:
This talk considers the social worlds of watermarks. I propose the theme of watermarks as a way to get after the often subtle but deliberate attempts to manage daily life—and related pursuits—in the midst of the ongoing climate crisis. This theme became apparent to me while doing ethnographic fieldwork in the flood-prone, low-lying, and coastal South American country Guyana. By reading watermarks, people in Guyana reconsider how floods have the capacity to destabilize claims to identity, biopolitical capital/labor, and human hubris. In this respect, watermarks are performative. They shape and reveal the social relations of infrastructures within a given place that at times flourish, and at other times, can simply fail to shape plausible futures for their users. Building on the insights of anthropological scholarship on the ordinary and fakery, watermarks offer us less a theory of power than a creative medium for learning to live with dignity through the climate crisis.

This is a part of the Research Center for Group Dynamics (RCGD) Winter 2022 Series - "Water Ways: New Social Science, Science Studies, and Environmental Approaches to Water"

This is also a part of the class Anthrcul 558 section 002

Moving beyond the medium with Jad Abumrad (April 12, 2022 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/92148 92148-21687202@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, April 12, 2022 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: School of Music, Theatre & Dance

Navigating today’s complex and rapidly changing music industry is a daunting task. Mythologies abound on the key steps you need to launch and sustain a music career, but what does it really take to carve out a path that fulfills personal goals and makes the world a better place? Curated and hosted by Matthew Dear, in collaboration with the University of Michigan EXCEL Lab, this virtual seminar investigates those questions through the lens of five leaders who have paved unique, transformative pathways to success.

Over the course of Fall 2021, Matthew Dear interviewed five luminaries who have carved out unique, highly-impactful, and innovative careers that intersect music, entrepreneurship, social impact, and creative storytelling. These interviews propel through the personal stories of each guest to illuminate the complexity of finding one’s path to self-actualization, while framing the circuitous paths that are central to nearly every successful professional arts journey today.

Jad Abumrad is a composer, musician and the host and creator of several podcasts (Radiolab, More Perfect, Dolly Parton’s America, Unerased) that collectively are downloaded over 130 million times a year. He’s been hailed for his unique ability to combine cutting edge sound-design, cinematic storytelling and a personal approach to explaining complex topics, from the stochasticity of tumor cells to the legal foundations of the war on terror. Jad studied creative writing and music composition at Oberlin College in Ohio. He composes much of the music for Radiolab, and in the past has composed music for film, theater and dance.
Radiolab has received three Peabody Awards, the highest honor in broadcasting. And in 2011 Jad received the prestigious MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship.

Over the past 50 years, the use of executive search firms in the hiring of university and college presidents has risen exponentially. In 1975-76, 2% of searches were handled by search firms (all in private institutions); in 2015-16, their use had risen to 92%, with private and public institutions represented equally. This presentation will explore:
-what search firms do and do not do;
-the expertise and blindspots that search firms bring to the process;
-their costs and requirements of confidentiality;
-their impact on the diversity of presidential hires and on presidential tenure;
-salaries of presidents across the last 10 years.

Karen A. Flack is a Professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. She received a bachelor’s degree from Rice University, a master’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley and a Ph.D. from Stanford University, all in Mechanical Engineering. Professor Flack teaches courses in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and design. Her research focuses on turbulent boundary layer physics with a concentration on rough wall boundary layers and frictional drag prediction. Recent work also includes performance characteristics of tidal turbines in unsteady flow conditions. She is on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Heat and Fluid Flow, Experiments in Fluids and Flow Turbulence and Combustion. She is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and has received the following: an ASME award for best paper in the Journal of Fluids Engineering, a Pi Tau Sigma teaching award, the Naval Academy Research award and United States government meritorious service medals.

Significant progress has been made towards the understanding of rough-wall boundary layers and the subsequent drag penalty. Continued progress is promising since a larger range of parameter space can now be investigated experimentally and numerically. Recent advances in rapid prototyping techniques enables the generation of systematic variations of roughness scales and computationally efficient simulations with creative surface mapping techniques allows for experiments and computations to investigate similar complex roughness. While a universal drag prediction correlation is still elusive and may not be possible, predictive correlations for classes of surface roughness pertinent to engineering applications seem achievable. Three surface parameters based solely on surface statistics are showing promise in predictive correlations for a range of studies. These include a measure of surface elevation a slope parameter and the skewness of the surface elevation probability density function. Other candidate parameters that may be useful in a predictive correlation or a surface filter are the streamwise and spanwise correlation lengths. The challenges to represent this wide range of surface conditions and potential scales to characterize engineering roughness including biofouling in predictive correlations will be discussed.

Nearly 1 in 4 individuals report a disability, yet current health care is poorly equipped to care for them. Individuals with disabilities report miscommunication, inaccessible health equipment and facilities, reduced awareness and training by health care providers, and low patient satisfaction while struggling with inadequate health literacy. These factors contribute to existing health inequities. Rethinking and redesigning our health care through the guidance of innovative clinics and programs is needed to address these inequities and care for these individuals effectively. This webinar will review current models and strategies that could be widely adopted in health care. These steps can make health care more inclusive and equitable.

Organized By: Kelsey Museum of Archaeology

Our speaker is Assistant Curator and Assistant Professor of History of Art Dr. Nicola Barham. Her research combines close visual analysis and the study of material contexts and textual sources to reconstruct, and subsequently analyze, the visual culture of the ancient Roman world. Dr. Barham's work considers marginalized ethnic groups whose works (particularly funerary reliefs and mosaics) have been sidelined in accounts of ancient Roman art.

In this FAST Lecture, entitled "Encrusted in Ancestors: Formal Reflections on the Funerary Reliefs of Palmyra," Dr. Barham analyzes the aesthetic strategies of the iconic funerary reliefs of Palmyra, taking the portrait of a Palmyrene woman in the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology as her starting point. She interrogates the visual effects mediated by the status of these works as relief and illustrates that when Palmyrene portraits are viewed individually (as is so common today), their intended dynamic interactions are dramatically elided. Dr. Barham's lecture reinserts these portraits into an original tomb context to reconstruct the powerful visual effects they were designed to create when operating together as an ensemble.

Palmyrene funerary sculptures emerge as participating in both the Graeco-Roman and the Parthian visual traditions, but as ultimately achieving a highly distinctive and localized visual impact. Like the dead whom they commemorate and, indeed, like the medium of relief itself, these objects occupy an in-between status, at once concealing and revealing, affectively engaging and emotionally withdrawn, stridently individual and defined by group dynamics. The visual strategies of these reliefs are unique to the Syrian desert oasis of Palmyra.

---------------

FAST (Field Archaeology Series on Thursdays) lectures are monthly events where students and staff in M-U's Interdepartmental Program in Classical Art and Archaeology (IPCAA) share their latest research and report on ongoing excavations.

In keeping with other FAST lectures this year, there will be no food or drink provided. We hope to return to the provision of plentiful food and drink in the fall.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: William L. Clements Library

In this episode of the Bookworm, University of Michigan Professor Gregory Dowd joins us to discuss his book *Groundless: Rumors, Legends, and Hoaxes on the Early American Frontier* (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2016). Rumor—spread by colonists and Native Americans alike—ran rampant in early America. In Groundless, Dowd explores why half-truths, deliberate lies, and outrageous legends emerged in the first place, how they grew, and why they were given such credence throughout the New World. Arguing that rumors are part of the objective reality left to us by the past—a kind of fragmentary archival record—he examines how uncertain news became powerful enough to cascade through the centuries.

This episode is generously sponsored by the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan.

This early exposure to research fosters a valuable academic experience for students. Through this collaboration, students gain research skills and mentorship that lead to academic retention, a more positive undergraduate experience and paths to graduate school.

The physical gestures that chamber ensembles and other musicians enact in order to seamlessly perform ‘as one’ include cues such as a fleeting glance, a subtle nod of the head, or the rise of the torso. These physical gestures are the root of how musicians share vital information to one another – empowering them to share ideas and stay open to improvisational interpretations. With the pandemic now requiring musicians to perform remotely, the limitations of video – which is currently the main aspect of telematic performance – to communicate these subtle physical gestures has become clear. Researchers for “Visualizing Telematic Performance” have spent the past year and a half conducting a series of experiments to explore other ways that these visual cues can be shared and a recent demonstration of their research thus far was recorded to show the experimental ideas that they hope will shift the scope of what telematic performance can encompass.
