Buying Home, Selling America: the House Catalog, 1906-1966 brings to light the collection of house catalogs in the Art, Architecture & Engineering Library’s Special Collections. Focusing primarily on the kit house industry of Michigan and the Midwest, the catalogs provide a portal to explore multiple themes, such as, the Michigan house catalog industry, changing architectural styles, the business of selling homes, societal and cultural implications, and domestic technologies. We hope the exhibit is not simply a nostalgic view back, but raises awareness of our domestic surroundings today and compels us to ask questions as we look to the future.

The exhibit is available in the Clark Library (second floor Hatcher) during Hatcher Library hours.

This exhibt runs through December 12, 2021.

Making art can be a transformative experience. It helps us to confront and address some of the most pressing issues of our time. Art has the power to shift the way we see and understand the world around us, and the worlds within us. Free Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan invites us to consider these qualities of art, while also grappling with the carceral system and the many ways it affects the lives of all of us.

Currently there are approximately 2.2 million people incarcerated in the United States, and in Michigan, there are roughly 33,000 residents currently serving time in the prison system. Working together with a coalition of more than a dozen organizations and Michigan State University units and departments, Free Your Mind explores the inner worlds of incarcerated individuals and the fundamental issues that shape conversations around incarceration today. The exhibition centers on four key topics of inquiry: Michigan’s length of sentencing and overcrowding in prisons; the impact of incarceration on women; youth incarceration; and the dangers of COVID-19.

The exhibition features artists, poets, and storytellers of great achievement. The majority of these artists are either currently or formerly incarcerated. Their works on view invite us to consider the role art-making plays in prisons as a liberating force, and offer unique perspectives on the experience of incarceration. The works also invite us to approach the subject of incarceration with an open mind. Free Your Mind aims to cultivate a greater sense of empathy for those directly impacted by incarceration and an understanding that their growth as individuals is linked to the greater health of the society we all live in, together.

Free Your Mind: Art and Incarceration in Michigan is organized by the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University and curated by Steven L. Bridges, Senior Curator and Director of Curatorial Affairs, and Janie Paul, Senior Curator and Cofounder, Annual Exhibitions of Art by Michigan Prisoners, a project of the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan. Support for this exhibition is provided by the Eli and Edythe Broad endowed exhibitions fund.

Connections, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition features the work of artists in the Linkage Project, a program of the Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) that affirms the creativity of adults who have returned from incarceration. The artists previously exhibited their work at PCAP's Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners at the University of Michigan. For some, this exhibition at the MSU Broad Art Lab is the first opportunity to show their work since regaining their freedom. Art-making has helped these artists during the dark years of their incarceration, and we hope the exhibition inspires visitors to learn more about how to support formerly incarcerated people reconnecting with their communities.

Martín Vargas, artist and curator of this exhibition, invites visitors and supporters to not only connect with the artists through their work, but also during select Art Lab studio hours, which will feature several of the artists working in person.

Connections, New Beginnings: Artists in Transition is organized by the Linkage Project of the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan in partnership with the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University. The exhibition is curated by Martín Vargas, Vanessa Mayesky, Scott Tompkins, Nico Slowik, Kimiko Uyeda, and Jenna VanFleteren.

Equity & Inclusion in Accessible Survey Design
Wednesday, December 8, noon to 1:10pm ET via Zoom (link to come)
Speaker: Scott Crawford (Founder and Chief Vision Officer, SoundRocket)

As we work to adapt research designs to make use of new technologies (web and smart devices), it is also important to consider how study design and survey design may impact those who rely on assistive technology. Sections 508 (covering use of accessible information and communication technology) and 501(addressing reasonable accommodation) of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 compliance standards have been around for a long time—but the survey research industry has often taken the path providing reasonable (non-technological) accommodations for study participants. These often involve alternate modes of data collection, but rarely provide a truly equitable solution for study participation. If a web-based survey is not compliant with assistive technologies, the participant may be offered the option of completing a survey with an interviewer. Survey methodologists know well that introducing a live human interaction may change how participants respond—especially if the study involves sensitive topics. Imagine a workplace survey on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion where a sight-impaired employee is asked to answer questions about how they are treated in their workplace, but they are required to answer these questions through an interviewer, and not privately via a website. Not only is this request not equitable for the employee (fully sighted employees get to respond more privately), it can also bias the results if the participant is not honest about the struggle for fear of receiving backlash from their employer if the interviewer passed along their frustrations. In the act of being denied equitable participation, future decisions will then be made on potentially faulty results about the experience of such people.

In this presentation, I will focus on developing an equitable research design, partially through considering the overall study—not just the technology itself. But we will also share experiences in the development of a highly accessible web-based survey that is compliant with screen reading technology (screen readers, mouse input grids, voice, keyboard navigation, etc.). I will present experimental, anecdotal, and descriptive experiences with accessible web-based surveys and research designs in higher education student, faculty, and staff surveys conducted on the topic of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Our results will be directly relevant for inclusion and equity in these settings as well as some surprising unintended positive consequences of some of these design decisions. Lastly, I will also share some next steps for where the field may go in continuing to improve in these areas.

Mindfulness Meditation is a skill that can be learned and when practiced has the power to enhance a sense of wellbeing, focus, and interconnectedness. As we all continue to navigate uncertainty and challenges that are inherent in the act of being human, we benefit from and are grateful for diverse cultures and traditions across the globe. Collectively they have passed on a wide variety of contemplative practices that encourage reflection, silence, and centering into the present moment to help us cope and better respond. Engaging in contemplative practices support the individual, by cultivating a sense of awareness and well-being, and benefit society by enhancing one’s capacity to create connection and community, and to become an agent of positive social change. There are many forms of contemplative practices, including meditation. Mindfulness meditation is one form aimed to help focus our awareness on the present moment as it unfolds, moment to moment, without judgment. Research on mindfulness continues to find a wide range of benefits. In short, Mindfulness may be viewed as cognitive training that bolsters our ability to handle stress, poor mood, and threat. It also increases our capacity to focus our attention on what is most important to us and to be more compassionate to ourselves and to others.

On Wednesdays from 12:15 - 12:45 pm, we come together in community to practice this skill in an open and supportive virtual space. Whether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. Join this supportive community and experience the gift of present moment awareness.

Martín Vargas, artist and curator of this exhibition, invites visitors and supporters to not only connect with the artists through their work, but also during select Art Lab studio hours, which will feature several of the artists working in person.

by Craig Hella Johnson

Considering Matthew Shepard was performed under the direction of award winning conductor Eugene Rogers, acclaimed stage director Matt Kunkel, and Emmy-award winning film producer Bob Berg. The Stamps Event Series’ premiere of the video will be followed by a conversation between Rogers and the piece’s composer, Craig Hella Johnson.

Johnson wrote the piece as a tribute to Matthew Shepard, a gay college student who in 1998 was beaten by strangers, tied to a fence, and left for dead. Shepard’s death, along with the murder of James Byrd Jr. by white supermacists a few months earlier, led to Congress passing the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act in 2009.

As imaging requirements become more demanding, we must rely on increasingly sparse and/or noisy measurements that fail to paint a complete picture. Computational imaging pipelines, which replace optics with computation, have enabled image formation in situations that are impossible for conventional optical imaging. For instance, the first black hole image, published in 2019, was only made possible through the development of computational imaging pipelines that worked alongside an Earth-sized distributed telescope. However, remaining scientific questions motivate us to improve this computational telescope to see black hole phenomena still invisible to us and to meaningfully interpret the collected data. This talk will discuss how we are leveraging and building upon recent advances in machine learning in order to achieve more efficient uncertainty quantification of reconstructed images as well as to develop techniques that allow us to extract the evolving structure of our own Milky Way's black hole over the course of a night.

Katherine L. (Katie) Bouman is a Rosenberg Scholar and an assistant professor in the Computing and Mathematical Sciences, Electrical Engineering, and Astronomy Departments at the California Institute of Technology. Before joining Caltech, she was a postdoctoral fellow in the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. She received her Ph.D. in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) at MIT in EECS, and her bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan.

This exhibit examines the political reasons for why people are imprisoned: for speaking out, for writing, for violating repressive laws, framed because of their color or politics, for stealing from the rich, for refusing the military draft, for whistleblowing, for attempting to overthrow the government, for standing up for a belief, or for walking over a forbidden line.

The items focus on maintaining one's humanity behind bars, promoting political causes, and offering solidarity in support of prisoners.

The groups and individuals whose stories are featured in the Labadie Collection share one thing in common: fighting to make a better world. In the process, many of them have been arrested, brutalized, censored, deported, imprisoned, or executed. Some were innocent victims of violent police or discriminatory policies.

The U-M Library’s Joseph A. Labadie Collection documents the history of social protest movements and marginalized political communities from the nineteenth century to the present. Established in 1911, it is the oldest and largest public archive of its kind in the world.

Instructure has set a timeline for New Quizzes to become the native quizzing engine, within U-M’s Canvas LMS instance, and retire Classic Quizzes by summer 2023. Beginning in July 2022 Classic Quizzes will no longer allow users to create or edit quizzes. This is a significant change and we want to keep U-M faculty and staff informed as we prepare for the transition from Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes, to ensure a seamless migration experience.

Prisons and Politics in America (January 13, 2022 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/89866 89866-21672205@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, January 13, 2022 9:00am
Location: Hatcher Graduate Library
