Mindfulness Meditation is a skill that can be learned and when practiced has the power to enhance a sense of wellbeing, focus, and interconnectedness. As we all continue to navigate uncertainty and challenges that are inherent in the act of being human, we benefit from and are grateful for diverse cultures and traditions across the globe. Collectively they have passed on a wide variety of contemplative practices that encourage reflection, silence, and centering into the present moment to help us cope and better respond. Engaging in contemplative practices support the individual, by cultivating a sense of awareness and well-being, and benefit society by enhancing one’s capacity to create connection and community, and to become an agent of positive social change. There are many forms of contemplative practices, including meditation. Mindfulness meditation is one form aimed to help focus our awareness on the present moment as it unfolds, moment to moment, without judgment. Research on mindfulness continues to find a wide range of benefits. In short, Mindfulness may be viewed as cognitive training that bolsters our ability to handle stress, poor mood, and threat. It also increases our capacity to focus our attention on what is most important to us and to be more compassionate to ourselves and to others.

On Wednesdays from 12:15 - 12:45 pm, we come together in community to practice this skill in an open and supportive virtual space. Whether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. Join this supportive community and experience the gift of present moment awareness.

Inspired by Nature: 20 Years of Art by Hava Gurevich
Hava Gurevich’s canvases pulsate with life. Bright colors and botanical motifs dance and tangle in abstract environments that bear resemblance to microscopic scans of cellular structures. “I am inspired by the elegant intricacy of patterns in nature that repeat on both small and large scales across a variety of lifeforms, from single cell amoebas to entire ecosystems.” The creative process for these works begins with drawing and photography. Images of daily encounters with nature and sketches of textures and details morph into lines, shapes and colors in acrylic paint. Patterns are abstracted and undulate across the canvas, forming the foundation of Gurevich’s visual language. Images from the imagination blend with botanical elements in vivid color combinations. These works capture the dynamics of nature and the constant state of growth and decay; the passage of death and the birth of new life.

On display, free to public from July 2 through September 11th at Matthaei Botanical Gardens. 1800 N. Dixboro Rd. Ann Arbor, MI 48105

In the upcoming decades, we will have the opportunity to solve some of the biggest questions about our universe by taking advantage of the huge amounts of data produced by upcoming state-of-the-art cosmological experiments. In order to harness the full statistical power of this data, we will need to develop scalable and accurate algorithms that can extract its maximal information. Recent advances in Machine Learning have demonstrated its ability to overcome the computational bottlenecks of traditional statistical techniques and even achieve better performance when analyzing cosmology data. In this talk, I will give a brief overview of the open problems in cosmology, motivate how Machine Learning (ML) could help us answer these by enabling novel analyses of upcoming cosmological surveys, and give a specific application of ML enabling probabilistic detection and measurement of galaxy images.

Location: William Clements Library
Organized By: William L. Clements Library

The four display cases in this exhibit were curated by members of a combined undergraduate and graduate course on disability history and literature at the University of Michigan to convey what it was like to be disabled in the United States before the modern category of “disability” existed. Together, the artifacts gathered from the Clements Library collections provide a glimpse of the cruelties, triumphs, and intimate acts of care that shaped the lives of people with disabilities in the past.

The Clements Library is offering Open Hours Monday through Friday, from 12:00 pm – 4:30 pm. To attend a behind the scenes guided tour of the Library and the exhibit, please see the schedule at myumi.ch/Aw9Zb.

Curated By: Dr. Ittai Orr and the Students of English 420, Winter 2022, with Maggie Vanderford and Julie Fremuth at the Clements Library.

How to Become a Fossil
Explore how fossils form and what parts of animals can become fossilized! How old are the earliest fossils? How old does something have to be before it is considered a fossil? You’ll touch some real fossils, learn the different types of fossil evidence, and discover what is necessary to become a fossil. Finally, we’ll discuss what kinds of things fossils can tell us, and how fossil casts are made in the museum!

A dozen selections from the Janice Bluestein Longone Culinary Archive from our Special Collections Research Center have been perfectly paired with dishes from the International Museum of Dinnerware Design to provide a feast for the eyes.

A “perfect pairing” usually refers to a taste compatibility between wine and a food group, such as wine and cheese. For example, some believe a perfect pairing would be Cabernet with duck confit with turnips or Pinot Noir with bison rib eye steaks with roasted garlic — wines with sauces, spicy food, hors d’oeurvres, etc. But other things can be perfectly paired such as fruit and cheese, a couple, or a clothing selection.

Sometimes pairs are made more perfect when they are catalysts for the imagination. That is what curators Margaret Carney, Ph.D., and Juli McLoone are serving in "A Perfect Pairing of Cookbooks and Dinnerware." The right ingredients along with an inspired recipe creates a delicious and beautiful meal that is enhanced when the cuisine is presented on a thoughtfully curated table setting, or, we hope, in a thoughtfully curated exhibit. Bon Appetit!

Organized By: Information and Technology Services (ITS)

Heartfulness Guided Meditation is a weekly, drop-in program designed to help you nourish your spirit and heal your body and mind.

All U-M students, faculty, and staff are welcome to participate in guided meditation practice with a trainer every Friday at noon over Zoom (details to join are provided below). No prior experience with meditation is required.

Advanced Wellness techniques are taught on the first Friday of the Month and that session will be about 45 mins.

*What will you learn?*

The guided meditation practice involves three simple steps: relaxation, rejuvenation, and meditation.

Relaxation brings your body to a calm, steady posture creating a stillness at the physical level, and prepares the mind for meditation. We follow this with a rejuvenation method to detox the mind to let go of stress and complex emotions, and will leave you feeling light and refreshed. Lastly, learning to meditate by being mindful of your heart will connect you with yourself by listening to your heart’s voice.

*Why Meditate?*

While physical fitness keeps our bodies in shape, meditation is an exercise for the mind and mental wellness. In addition to the measurable benefits mentally and physically, many people benefit from an unquantifiable inner poise and harmony.

The chirality of biomolecules is a good indicator of their structure and function. Fluorescence-detected circular dichroism remains a primary detection scheme for chirality due to its sensitivity. However, since most biomolecules have a low dissymmetry factor in the visible range (~103), single-molecule detection of chirality is challenging even for fluorescent molecules. To achieve single-molecule fluorescence-detected circular dichroism, we are leveraging plasmonic nanoparticle substrates, which focus incident plane waves into locally varying near fields, to enhance the dissymmetry factor. By varying the substrate design and the incident polarization of the plane wave, we are optimizing the electric field density and optical chirality to enhance the differential fluorescence intensity of proximal chiral biomolecules. Because the electromagnetic landscape varies on the nanometer scale, the differential signal will be most enhanced within a sub-diffraction-limited area on the sample. We use single-molecule super-resolution microscopy to access these hotspots experimentally. I will present the chiroptical interactions of single pairs of cyanine dyes (aligned into J-aggregates by a double-stranded backbone to form right-handed fluorescent biomolecules) with chiral and achiral gold nanoparticles. In this talk, I will discuss the design of the experimental setup and use full-field simulations to determine the electromagnetic near field produced by varying the incident polarization at the substrate.

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is a veritable cornucopia of delicious dishes. Over the centuries, the shared food knowledge and passion of Native Americans and immigrants of all kinds produced the region’s iconic foods and beloved restaurants. Mackinac Island remains the epicenter for fine food. Here one can dine on freshly caught trout and whitefish at the Grand Hotel before tracking down the island’s celebrated fudge for dessert.

Afield of the island, visitors and residents alike can attend a Friday night fish fry virtually anywhere in the area, savor a juicy “Big C” burger at one of the many Clyde’s Drive-In locations or just have a refreshing glass of beer at Tahquamenon Brew Pub in aptly named Paradise. Author and award-winning historian Russell M. Magnaghi delves into the delectable food history of the Upper Peninsula.

If you’ve read and enjoyed such books as "Circe" by Madeline Miller, "Mythos" or "Heroes" by Stephen Fry, the Percy Jackson books by Rick Riordan, or have listened to podcasts like “Greeking Out,” this is the tour for you! We’ll look at artifacts such as coins, vases, statues, and funerary equipment to find out how myths were incorporated into daily life in ancient Greece and Rome.

The Kelsey Museum's Virtual Saturday Sampler tours are a great way to explore the ancient world from the comfort of your home.

BioArtography will be in South University Booth SU1109 (Between E. Univ. and Church) the Ann Arbor Art Fair! 13 spectacular new images for 2022 will be making their debut!

Every day at the University of Michigan, scientists from many fields work together to study organism development, function and disease. While the goal of these studies is to design new and effective ways to treat disease and provide better understanding of ourselves as well as the world around us, many are also taking the time to share the beauty of their work with others through a program called BioArtography. In the course of research, scientists use special stains to add color to the otherwise transparent tissues. Microscopes then allow detailed observation of the tiny, colorful biological structures revealed in these images. This results in a fascinating combination of art and science that U-M researchers are capturing in pictures taken through microscopes and turning into artworks that would look beautiful on any wall.

The goal of these studies is to design new and effective ways to treat disease and provide better understanding of ourselves as well as the world that surrounds us. Proceeds from the sale of this work help support the training of our next generation of researchers. Past BioArtography sales have raised enough money to send more than 100 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to scientific conferences, where they can present their work to other scientists and make connections that can help them launch their careers in research and industry.

Throughout the year BioArtography images (a collection of over 250) can be viewed and ordered online at www.bioartography.com

Designing physical structures and devices to achieve desirable performance is an important study in many disciplines, including physics and engineering. However, the design process is non-trivial because of the large design spaces as well as the non-unique optimal design. Usually, the design process requires an iterative trial-and-error process conducted by human experts through extensive simulations or experiments, which wastes much time and effort. The recent development of computer science has reshaped this research domain. In this talk, I will give a brief overview of these design methods, with a special focus on designing optical and photonic structures and devices. In this talk, I will briefly discuss three parts: 1) Traditional optimization methods; 2) Deep learning methods that use the neural networks as function approximators to speed up the evaluations and guide for optimization; 3) Reinforcement learning methods that can efficiently extrapolate in the design space and provide new design thoughts. One specific example will be discussed in each part.

Certifiable Autonomous Systems Through Online Verification — CCAT Distinguished Lecture Series (July 21, 2022 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/95889 95889-21791378@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, July 21, 2022 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Center for Connected and Automated Transportation

Engineers and computer scientists are currently developing autonomous systems whose entire set of behaviors in future, untested situations is unknown. For instance, how can a designer foresee all situations that an autonomous vehicle will face? Keeping in mind that many autonomous systems are safety-critical or operation-critical, it is irresponsible to deploy such systems without testing all possible situations---this, however, seems impossible since even the most important possible situations are often unmanageably many. This presentation proposes a paradigm shift that will make it possible to guarantee safety in unforeseeable situations (under mild model assumptions): Instead of verifying the correctness of a system before deployment, we propose online verification, a new verification paradigm where a system continuously checks the correctness of its next action by itself in its current environment (and only in it) in a just-in-time manner. The usefulness of this method will be demonstrated primarily for autonomous driving and robotics.

A cumbersome operation in physics, numerical analysis and linear algebra, optimization, and machine learning, is inverting large full-rank matrices. In this paper, we propose a coded computing approach for recovering matrix inverse approximations. We first present an approximate matrix inversion algorithm that does not require a matrix factorization but uses a black-box least squares optimization solver as a subroutine to give an estimate of the inverse of real full-rank matrices. We then present a distributed framework for which our algorithm can be implemented and show how we can leverage from sparsest-balanced MDS generator matrices to devise inverse coded computing schemes. We focus on balanced Reed-Solomon codes, which are optimal in terms of computational load; and communication from the workers to the master server. We also discuss how our algorithms can be used to compute the pseudoinverse of a full-rank matrix and how the communication can be secured from eavesdroppers.

Location: Off Campus Location

Beginning Saturday, July 30, the exhibit Shared Humanity will be featured at Silver Maples in Chelsea from the Prison Creative Arts Project’s (PCAP) private collection. The artwork is for sale and will be on display in the 100 Gallery through August 31, 2022.

According to Sarah Unrath, Curator and Arts Programming Coordinator of PCAP, “the exhibition is designed to connect viewer to artist through the wide gamut of their human experiences. We all have dreams, memories, goals, pasts. We all process emotions of anger, joy, grief, nostalgia. We have specially selected works that show a culmination of ways artists in prison have dealt with complex realities of being human.”

The curatorial staff at PCAP worked closely with artists who were formerly incarcerated, and the team at Silver Maples, to select works that would fit the theme of this exhibition and be of interest to the broader audience. Visitors will see works from familiar artists, including Andy Wynkoop, An ArtsyGuy, RIK, Roger (Free-Hand) Stephenson, and many others.

“This exhibition centralizes intersecting themes and multi-faceted layers of what it means to be human. Our hope is to challenge the lens through which the exhibit audience looks at people in prison. Coming out of a season that has worn us thin of human connection, this exhibit presents a unique opportunity to engage in powerful dialogue inspired by the art in Shared Humanity,” says Unrath

The 100 Gallery is open Mon-Fri are 8:30am-5pm and Sat-Sun 10am-2:30pm.
Admission is free and open to the public.
Sales will be conducted in person on Saturday, August 6 with alternative phone sale appointments available: https://myumi.ch/DJ6M5
