We'd like to invite you to a new event series this semester, the Queer World Conversations! These will be weekly discussions on a variety of topics, but all of them will be discussed with a queer lens. We'll bring the topic, you bring the discussion! Everyone is welcome to join the Conversations, and the voices of those most impacted by the week's topic will be prioritized.

Topics will be announced the week before on our social medias and on the event pages. Registration is not required, nor is consistent attendance. Come when you want, bring your friends, and let's have a Conversation!

Upcoming topics:
4/12/23 - Weight Inclusivity

There are a lot of social ideas of what someone's body "should" look like, especially when it comes to weight. Body positivity is more visible than ever, but so is fatphobia. With the help of our friends of the School of Public Health's Weight Inclusive Initiative, we'll dive into the ways that queer bodies and queer cultures interact with and complicate the already complex ideas we have around one's weight. Are queer people held to a higher standard than non-queer folks? Do we hold each other to higher standards within our own community? Are there any major connections between fatphobia and gender dysphoria?

Spectrum Center Event Accessibility Statement:
The Spectrum Center is dedicated to working towards offering equitable access to all of the events we organize. Metagenomics holds potential to improve clinical diagnostics of infectious diseases, but DNA from clinical specimens is often dominated by host-derived sequences. To address this, researchers employ host-depletion methods. Laboratory-based host-depletion methods, however, are costly in terms of time and effort, while computational host-depletion methods rely on memory-intensive reference index databases and struggle to accurately classify noisy sequence data. To solve these challenges, we propose an index-free tool, AMAISE (A Machine Learning Approach to Index-Free Sequence Enrichment). Applied to the task of separating host from microbial reads, AMAISE achieves over 98% accuracy. Applied prior to metagenomic classification, AMAISE results in a 14–18% decrease in memory usage compared to using metagenomic classification alone. Our results show that a reference-independent machine learning approach to host depletion allows for accurate and efficient sequence detection.

This presentation will be held in 2036 Palmer Commons. There will also be a remote viewing option via Zoom.

More about the film:
MTV Documentary Films Presents *Angola Do You Hear Us? Voices From a Plantation Prison* (formerly known as A Peculiar Silence) tells the story of playwright Liza Jessie Peterson, whose acclaimed play *The Peculiar Patriot* was shut down mid-performance at the Louisiana State Penitentiary, commonly known as Angola Prison.

Directed and edited by Cinque Northern, produced by Catherine Gund, featuring Liza Jessie Peterson and Norris Henderson (Peterson and Henderson are also Executive Producers), the film examines how one woman's play challenged the country's largest plantation prison and impacted the incarcerated men long after the record of her visit was erased by the institution's administration.

LaQuanda ‘Betsy’ Ross knows a lot about the New York State Penitentiary system. Her regular visits to loved ones in various upstate institutions have made her quite the expert and a self-proclaimed “Peculiar Patriot." In-between neighborhood updates and gossip, Betsy educates herself and the audience on the systemic inequity within America’s prison complex system and its effect on those behind bars, as well as their family and friends.

Written and performed by the incomparable Liza Jessie Peterson, The Peculiar Patriot was inspired by her comprehensive and extensive work in prisons, including on Riker’s Island. Peterson’s tour de force solo piece is an important, funny, and profound investigative look into America’s criminal justice system.

This student-curated exhibit focuses on the theme of secrecy and how it has shaped our inquiry into how the family, as an institution and an ideal at the heart of debates about American identity and national belonging, has changed over time.

The materials gathered here represented various ways in which cultural concepts of family evolved in both public and private ways.

Please enter through the North Entrance (glass vestibule) that faces the Hatcher Graduate Library.

Carl Wilson is known for his stark black and white linocut prints. The self-taught artist sees himself as a documentarian of lives easily ignored in a world obsessed with materialism and celebrity. His work frequently highlights not only the strength found in conquering the everyday and mundane, but also the pain and defeat of those not able to rise to the occasion. His love of film noir and pulp fiction novels from the nineteen forties and fifties has led him to experiment with minimalist animation and comic book illustration. He embraces the whimsy hidden in the darkness.

Carl is the recipient of a 2013 Kresge Artist Fellowship and is an alumni of the historic Yaddo Artists’ Community. During his residency there he carved the prints for, and wrote the book, Her Purse Smelled like JuicyFruit, a recollection of his mother’s life. Carl was named 2014 guest curator of Detroit’s Carr Center. Also in 2014 Complex Online Magazine named him one of Twenty Detroit Artists You Should Know. He was featured in Essay'd, a monthly publication about Detroit artists. In 2017 Carl's work was a part of Detroit's contribution to The Saint-Etienne Design Biennale in France. 2017 also saw the release of a comic book, the first installment of his graphic novel, Dead & Lost in Detroit. Spring of 2018 saw Carl complete a residency at MacDowell in New Hampshire. While there he finished the writing and illustration of his graphic novel and currently the book is in negotiation for publication. The year has also seen the completion of a ten print collection based on James Weldon Johnson's Prodigal Son poetry. It was commissioned by Calvin College and Dr. Larry Gerbens.

Heartfulness Guided Meditation (February 3, 2023 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/88544 88544-21803319@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 3, 2023 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Information and Technology Services (ITS)

Heartfulness Guided Meditation is a weekly, drop-in program designed to help you nourish your spirit and heal your body and mind.

All U-M students, faculty, and staff are welcome to participate in guided meditation practice with a trainer every Friday at noon over Zoom (details to join are provided below). No prior experience with meditation is required.

Advanced Wellness techniques are taught on the first Friday of the Month and that session will be about 45 mins.

*What will you learn?*

The guided meditation practice involves three simple steps: relaxation, rejuvenation, and meditation.

Relaxation brings your body to a calm, steady posture creating a stillness at the physical level, and prepares the mind for meditation. We follow this with a rejuvenation method to detox the mind to let go of stress and complex emotions, and will leave you feeling light and refreshed. Lastly, learning to meditate by being mindful of your heart will connect you with yourself by listening to your heart’s voice.

*Why Meditate?*

While physical fitness keeps our bodies in shape, meditation is an exercise for the mind and mental wellness. In addition to the measurable benefits mentally and physically, many people benefit from an unquantifiable inner poise and harmony.

2023 Dinkeloo Memorial Lecture: Philippe Block, "Disrupting Concrete Construction: digital, sustainable and circular" (February 6, 2023 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/103977 103977-21808177@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, February 6, 2023 6:00pm

Disrupting Concrete Construction: digital, sustainable and circular

Concrete does not want to be a beam; it wants to be an arch. Unreinforced concrete can be considered an artificial stone, so the natural geometries for this material happy in compression follow the same structural principles that have kept Gothic cathedrals standing for centuries. It allows significantly reducing the amount of material needed but also building with lesser emitting materials. Recent developments in computational design, engineering, and construction-scale digital fabrication allow the introduction of concrete as a truly sustainable solution for spanning structures such as floor “slabs” or footbridges. This talk will introduce how we can disrupt concrete construction, providing solutions that are lightweight, low in embodied emissions, and use construction demolition waste. Designing for circularity, a discrete masonry logic is introduced, enabling dry-assembled prefab, demountable and reusable or easily recyclable at the end of its life. Lastly, we will go beyond an academic exercise to propose economically competitive innovations available at scale and globally. Sounds too good to be true?

Philippe Block is professor at the Institute of Technology in Architecture (ITA) at ETH Zurich, where he leads the Block Research Group (BRG) with Dr. Tom Van Mele and is Head of the Institute. Philippe is also the Director of the Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) on Digital Fabrication. He studied architecture and structural engineering at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned his Ph.D. in 2009. Philippe and Tom apply their research into practice providing innovation in (computational) design, engineering, fabrication, and construction of sustainable, circular, and economical structures, addressing climate change by significantly reducing embodied emissions, utilizing fewer single-use resources, and minimizing construction waste.

Following the motto “strength through geometry” and the principles of traditional unreinforced masonry construction, the BRG translates this knowledge into projects such as the unreinforced stone Armadillo Vault, the thin, flexibly formed concrete shells of the NEST HiLo and KnitCandela, the 3D-concrete-printed masonry bridge Striatus, and the Rippmann Floor System (RFS), a lightweight and ultra-low-embodied floor system.

This memorial lecture was established to recognize John Dinkeloo's extraordinary contributions to architecture and commemorate excellence in architectural design. This annual lecture celebrates those designers whose work combines design excellence with structural ingenuity.

ChE SEMINAR: "Understanding Energy Conversion at Heterogeneous Interfaces from Many - Body Perturbation Theory" (February 7, 2023 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/103758 103758-21807776@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, February 7, 2023 11:00am
Location: Lurie Robert H. Engin. Ctr
Organized By: Chemical Engineering

Organized by Bryan Goldsmith, Dow Corning Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering. U-M ChE faculty and graduate students are especially encouraged to attend.

Abstract:
Heterogeneous interfaces, especially those formed between molecules and solid-state substrates, are ubiquitous in nanoscale functional materials and energy related applications. Characterization of the electronic structure and optical properties at these interfaces is crucial for understanding charge transfer dynamics and energy conversion mechanisms. Many-body perturbation theory, such as the GW-BSE formalism (G: Greens function; W: screened Coulomb interaction; BSE: Bethe-Salpeter equation), provides a formal theoretical framework for predicting band energy level alignments and optical properties, but the computational cost for typical interfaces is high. Here, I will introduce new methodological advancements for accelerating many-body calculations of large heterogeneous interfaces based on the idea of dielectric embedding. Furthermore, I will show applications to systems of experimental importance for insights into structure-property relationships, including covalent organic frameworks adsorbed on metal substrates and (metallo)phthalocyanine molecules adsorbed on transition-metal dichalcogenides. Lastly, I will discuss our recent work on the characterization of quantum dot assemblies and relevant interfaces.

The Positive Links Speaker Series, presented by Michigan Ross’ Center for Positive Organizations, offers inspiring and practical science-based strategies to build and bolster thriving organizations. Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics, students, staff, and leaders.

About the talk:
Despite our deep desire to feel a sense of belonging, many of us feel isolated. The rise of technology and modern workplace practices have led people to be even more disconnected, even as we remain constantly contactable. And as our human interactions have decreased, so too have our happiness levels. This is sparking a crisis in mental health that will have repercussions for years, leaving people lonelier and organizations less productive and profitable, too.
Join us for a conversation with Christine Porath, author of Mastering Community, to discover just how important thriving communities are to our wellbeing and the success of organizations and learn what steps you can take to create them. In this fireside chat facilitated by Gretchen Spreitzer, Porath will share ways to unite and grow your communities—be it in the workplace, the PTA, sports, or places of worship—and make them thrive.

About Porath:
Christine Porath is a tenured professor at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business. She’s the author of Mastering Community, Mastering Civility, and co-author of The Cost of Bad Behavior.

Her speaking and consulting clients include Google, United Nations, World Bank, Microsoft, Marriott, World Health Organization, and Cleveland Clinic.

She received her BA from College of the Holy Cross, where she was a member of the women’s basketball and soccer teams, and her PhD from Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

If you have an accessibility need you feel may not be automatically met at this event, there is space to report that in the registration, or you can fill out our Event Accessibility Form, found at http://bit.ly/SCaccess. You do not need to have a registered disability with the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) or identify as disabled to submit. Advance notice is necessary for some accommodations to be fully implemented, and we will always attempt to dismantle barriers as they are brought up to us. The adoption of home devices connected to the internet is growing and so are concerns about child physical and digital safety and privacy in the smart home. The U-M community is invited to join us on Zoom for a presentation and Q&A with Kaiwen Sun, U-M School of Information Ph.D. student, as she explores the discrepancies between marketing depictions and device features, and discusses considerations for keeping children safe in the smart home.

Kaiwen Sun’s research focuses on the intersection of children’s privacy and safety and understanding parents’ perceptions and behaviors around privacy and safety in the context of smart home technologies.

This event is open to the U-M community (umich login required) and will be especially relevant to parents, grandparents, guardians, and others who interact with children in their homes.

Abstract:

Most disease associated genomic variants have relatively modest effects on target gene expression in reporter or CRISPR perturbation assays. In addition, enhancer disruption in vivo often has surprisingly weak phenotypic consequences. I will present machine learning (ML) methods (gkm-SVM and DNN) which we use to learn the complex transcription factor combinations that control enhancer activity and cell fate. I will then use these methods to develop a quantitative model for enhancer activity which shows that while promoter knockdown has robust effects on target gene expression, individual enhancer knockdown is often weaker and affects temporal transition dynamics, but not the final steady state. This model provides an explanation of the paradox of how enhancer variation can be strongly associated with disease risk while having individually weak effects, by showing in detail how gene regulatory networks control developmentally important and disease relevant cell state transitions and cancer.

Cydney K. Seigerman is a Ph.D. candidate in the Integrative Conservation & Anthropology program at the University of Georgia, where they work with Dr. Don Nelson and are a member of the Human Environmental Change Lab (HECL). Cydney is an NSF Graduate Research Fellow and a research scholar at the Cearense Meteorological and Water Resources Foundation (Funceme) in Ceará, Brazil.

Cydney's research incorporates methods from the critical social sciences, natural sciences, and theatre/performance studies to explore human-technology-environment relations. Their dissertation work explores how socionatural (i.e., interrelated sociopolitical, environmental, and technological) processes shape and are shaped by the lived experience of water insecurity in Ceará, northeast Brazil.

Before pursuing their Ph.D., Cydney studied chemistry and Spanish language and literature at the University of Michigan, graduating from the Residential College and Honors College. They then relocated to Madrid, Spain, where they served as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant, studied acting at the theater school La Lavandería, and ran competitively.

Heartfulness Guided Meditation (February 10, 2023 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/88544 88544-21803320@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 10, 2023 12:00pm

This is an in-person lecture. You may also watch a live stream on YouTube:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OplDYUtTRto

There is growing support for the transition from a global energy infrastructure dependent on coal, natural gas, and oil to one entirely reliant on a combination of battery electric vehicles, photovoltaic solar, wind turbines, and grid-scale battery storage. Manufacturing and deploying these renewable energy resources requires dozens of natural resources, including copper, lithium, nickel, tellurium, cobalt, indium, tin, chromium, and many, many others. Where do these resources come from? Is there enough? Will they be available on the timescale we need? What are the economic constraints on their availability? What are the environmental permitting constraints on the timeframe for production and delivery to market? What are the political constraints on their availability? Please join me for a presentation where I answer these questions and more.

Kathakali Performance (February 11, 2023 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/114240 114240-21832551@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, February 11, 2023 7:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: School of Music, Theatre & Dance

Famed South Indian Kathakali dancer Manoj Kumar from the premier tertiary conservatory of South Indian music and dance, Kerala Kalamandalam, will offer a solo performance in full make up and costumes with an introduction from Kathakali scholar V. Kaladharan. Kumar will appear on the stage as the omnipotent Ravana, the king of Srilanka. This anti-hero in the great Indian Epic, Ramayana, recollects the major milestones in his life right from his childhood days. Q&A following the performance.

Part of the U-M Fall 2023 Festival of Asian Music
https://smtd.umich.edu/asian-music-festival/

Kathakali, literally story-play, is a highly evolved dance-theatre tradition that originated in Kerala, south India, in the 17th century. It is an amazing amalgam of dance, drama, and music; vocal and instrumental. The facial makeup & costuming of Kathakali are both stylized and semi-realistic. The ornamentations in Kathakali are intricate, intriguing and incredibly elaborate. It takes three to four hours for a Kathakali actor to transform himself/herself into a Kathakali character. Traditionally Kathakali plays dramatize stories from the great Indian epics: the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Srimad Bhagawatha.

Free and open to the public; Presented by the Center for World Performance Studies with support from the School of Music, Theatre & Dance, the Center for South Asian Studies, and the U.S. Department of Education Title VI grant.

If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to participate in this event, please contact Center for World Performance Studies, at cwps.information@umich.edu or call 734-936-2777, at least one week in advance of this event.

We invite you to a birthday party for Frederick Douglass. Although Douglass was born into bondage, and never knew his birthdate, he chose to celebrate every year on February 14th.

Join us either virtually in Zoom (register at https://myumi.ch/Prn1k) or onsite in the Hatcher Gallery Lab to celebrate creating and preserving Black history together.

This year, Douglass Day celebrates the life and activism of Mary Ann Shadd Cary (1823-1893). She was one of the earliest Black women to edit a newspaper, serve as a Civil War recruiter, attend law school, and so much more. Help us transcribe documents from Shadd Cary's long and fascinating life to enrich several newly digitized collections at Archives of Ontario and Libraries and Archives Canada.

Join us for three events!

1. First, a keynote address to kick off the festivities at 1:00 pm with Ozi Uduma, assistant curator of Global Contemporary Art at the University of Michigan Museum of Art

Followed by these concurrent events, which start around 1:30 pm:

2. a transcribe-a-thon of the papers of Mary Ann Shadd Cary
3. an arts and crafts session to make valentines for Black women activists

We hope you can join us for all three events, but feel free to attend what your time allows. The keynote, transcribe-a-thon, and arts and crafts session will all be available both in-person and on Zoom.

MPSDS JPSM Seminar Series
February 15, 2023
12:00 - 1:00 EST

Richard Valliant, PhD, is a research professor emeritus at the Institute for Social Research, University of Michigan, and at the Joint Program in Survey Methodology at the University of Maryland. He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, an elected member of the International Statistical Institute, and has been an associate editor of the Journal of the American Statistical Association, Journal of Official Statistics, and Survey Methodology.

The Evolution of the Use of Models in Survey Sampling

The use of models in survey estimation has evolved over the last five (or more) decades. This talk will trace some of the developments over time and attempt to review some of the history. Consideration of models for estimating descriptive statistics began as early as the 1940's when Cochran and Jessen proposed linear regression estimators of means. These were early examples of model-assisted estimation since the properties of the Cochran-Jessen estimators were calculated with respect to a random sampling distribution. Model-thinking was used informally through the 1960's to form ratio and linear regression estimators that could in some applications reduce design variances.

In a 1963 Australian Journal of Statistics paper, Brewer presented results for a ratio estimator that were entirely based on a super population model. Royall (Biometrika 1970 and later papers) formalized the theory for a more general prediction approach using linear models. Since that time, the use of models is ubiquitous in the survey estimation literature and has been extended to nonparametric, empirical likelihood, Bayesian, small area, machine learning, and other approaches. There remains a considerable gap between the more advanced techniques in the literature and the methods commonly used in practice.

In parallel to the model developments, the design-based, randomization approach was dominating official statistics in the US largely due to the efforts of Morris Hansen and his colleagues at the US Census Bureau. In 1937 Hansen and others at the Census Bureau designed a follow-on sample survey to a special census of the employed and partially employed because response to the census was incomplete and felt to be inaccurate. The sample estimates were judged to be more trustworthy than those of the census itself. This began Hansen’s career-long devotion to random sampling as the only trustworthy method for obtaining samples from finite populations and for making inferences.

Model-assisted estimation, as discussed in the 1992 book by Särndal, Swensson, and Wretman is a type of compromise where models are used to construct estimators while a randomization distribution is used to compute properties like means and variances. This thinking has led to the popularity of doubly robust approaches where the goal is to have estimators with good properties with respect to both a randomization and a model distribution.

The field has now reached a troubling crossroads in which response rates to many types of surveys have plummeted and nonprobability datasets are touted as a way of obtaining reasonable quality data at low cost. Sophisticated model-based mathematical methods have been developed for estimation from nonprobability samples. In some applications, e.g., administrative data files that are incomplete due to late reporting, these methods may work well. However, in others the quality of nonprobability sample data is irremediably bad as illustrated by Kennedy in her 2022 Hansen lecture. In some situations, we are back in Morris' 1937 situation where standard approaches no longer work. Methods are needed to evaluate whether acceptable estimates can be made from the most suspect data sets. Nonetheless. nonprobability datasets are readily available now, and it is up to the statistical profession to develop good methods for using them.

Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science (MPSDS)
The University of Michigan Program in Survey Methodology was established in 2001 seeking to train future generations of survey and data scientists. In 2021, we changed our name to the Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science. Our curriculum is concerned with a broad set of data sources including survey data, but also including social media posts, sensor data, and administrative records, as well as analytic methods for working with these new data sources. And we bring to data science a focus on data quality — which is not at the center of traditional data science. The new name speaks to what we teach and work on at the intersection of social research and data. The program offers doctorate and master of science degrees and a certificate through the University of Michigan. The program's home is the Institute for Social Research, the world's largest academically-based social science research institute.

Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques (SISRT)
The mission of the Summer Institute is to provide rigorous and high quality graduate training in all phases of survey research. The program teaches state-of-the-art practice and theory in the design, implementation, and analysis of surveys. The Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques has presented courses on the sample survey since the summer of 1948, and has offered such courses every summer since. Graduate-level courses through the Program in Survey and Data Science are offered from June 5 through July 28 and available to enroll in as a Summer Scholar.

Leslie Bow (English, Wisconsin) will be in conversation with a UM faculty member about her recent book Racist Love: Asian Abstraction & the Pleasure of Fantasy. In Racist Love, Bow traces the ways in which Asian Americans become objects of anxiety and desire. Conceptualizing these feelings as “racist love,” she explores how race is abstracted and then projected onto Asianized objects. Bow shows how anthropomorphic objects and images such as cartoon animals in children’s books, home décor and cute tchotchkes, contemporary visual art, and artificially intelligent robots function as repositories of seemingly positive feelings and attachment to Asianness. At the same time, Bow demonstrates that these Asianized proxies reveal how fetishistic attraction and pleasure serve as a source of anti-Asian bias and violence.

Valentine's Day is right around the corner, so let's talk about how our identities interact with our conceptions of love, both romantically and platonically. As we all know, cultural experiences and traditional behaviors all influence our expressions and experiences of love, and deeply impact the way we give and receive it. For this event, residents will interact on a deeper level, sharing experiences and stories regarding their perceptions of love. The event will be an hour, with 5 minute rounds during which people will share a conversation with a new person.

The main objective is to allow for diverse perspectives and experiences to bring a greater sense of unity around love, especially as Valentine's day approaches. There is always a place for you, especially on Valentine's day, and you never have to be alone. All are welcome!

Microorganisms, or microscopic organisms, live where no other life can live- like at the bottom of the ocean, in geysers, and in the Dead Sea. But did you know your local ponds are also teeming with microbial life? Roll up your sleeves and prepare to look at these pond water microbes using a microscope. What types of microbes live in ponds, and what purpose do they serve? Get ready to draw, color, and identify microbes in this hands-on activity.

Accurate intraoperative diagnosis is essential for providing safe and effective care during brain tumor surgery. Our standard-of-care diagnostic methods are time, resource, and labor intensive, which restricts access to optimal surgical treatments. To address these limitations, we propose an alternative workflow that combines stimulated Raman histology (SRH), a rapid optical imaging method, with deep learning-based automated interpretation of SRH images for intraoperative brain tumor diagnosis and real-time surgical decision support. Here, we present OpenSRH, the first public dataset of clinical SRH images from 300+ brain tumors patients and 1300+ unique whole slide optical images. OpenSRH contains data from the most common brain tumors diagnoses, full pathologic annotations, whole slide tumor segmentations, raw and processed optical imaging data for end-to-end model development and validation. We provide a framework for patch-based whole slide SRH classification and inference using weak (i.e. patient-level) diagnostic labels. Finally, we benchmark two computer vision tasks: multiclass histologic brain tumor classification and patch-based contrastive representation learning. We hope OpenSRH will facilitate the clinical translation of rapid optical imaging and real-time ML-based surgical decision support in order to improve the access, safety, and efficacy of cancer surgery in the era of precision medicine.

What does it mean to live well with bipolar disorder?

Join the Heinz C. Prechter Bipolar Research Program for a dialogue about wellness and bipolar disorder. Our team of researchers, clinicians, and Prechter Program participants will discuss what wellness means when living with bipolar disorder, how individual lived experiences shape wellness, and how research plays a role in establishing wellness.

Dr. Sperry, a researcher in the Prechter Program and Clinical Psychologist in the Bipolar Clinic at Michigan Medicine, will speak about the importance of measuring well-being as an outcome in clinical care and research studies. She will discuss current research that highlights the need to re-define well-being, or, what it means to be living well with bipolar disorder. Dr. Sperry will end by introducing an important new initiative of the Prechter Program, the development of new tools to measure well-being, incorporating the perspective and voices of those with lived experience.

Prechter Program research participants will share their perspectives on wellness and how to sustain wellness with bipolar disorder in a roundtable discussion.

Despite recent panels and scholarship aiming to dispel the notion, there is a conception that contemporary art and religion are incompatible.

When paired with the Islamophobic sentiment that Islam is destructive, rather than constructive like artistic practices and that it even forbids many forms of artistic production, there is a presumption that contemporary art that engages with Islam as religion and faith (rather than simply as identity) cannot exist.

There is an additional assumption that those who identify as women, queer, trans, and non-binary are unlikely to engage with Islam in their work outside of critique, because of the belief that Islam is inherently (and uniquely) oppressive of and therefore contradictory to individuals who identify as such.

In an attempt to disabuse viewers of these notions, as well as give a space of exploration to these often overlooked or excluded voices, this exhibition brings together women, queer, trans, and non-binary Muslim artists who explore their connection to religion, their other identities (be those related to their race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, or status as artists), and their practices.

Author of “Black Girlhood in the Nineteenth Century”, Associate Professor of English and African American and Africana Studies at the University of Kentucky, and long-time researcher Dr. Nazera Wright is working on her second book titled “African American Women Writers and their Libraries”. Wright explores Frances E. W. Harper, who extended her private library to other African American Women to grant them access to literature and research that they wouldn’t have otherwise had access to. Wright's new book uncovers the radical and transgressive practices that black women writers engaged in to gain access to research libraries at the end of the nineteenth century.

Register to join the 2023 Privacy@Michigan keynote with Dr. Kirsten Martin on Friday, February 17 at 11 a.m.

Dr. Kirsten Martin for a Privacy@Michigan keynote presentation on privacy expectations on online platforms. Standard approaches to privacy assume individuals relinquish privacy expectations when online or have focused on individuals in relation to a single company. Platforms, such as social media, marketplaces, search engines, etc, are unique in having duties beyond a standard company while also having access to the data of millions of individuals. Dr. Martin will discuss how we need to think about platforms, particularly powerful platforms, as having an obligation to respect the privacy of their users and what that obligation actually entails. Dr. Martin is a University of Michigan College of Engineering alumna.

Dr. Florian Schaub, Assistant Professor of Information, School of Information and Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, College of Engineering, will facilitate Q&A time after the keynote presentation.

This hybrid event will be hosted in person in Forum Hall, on the fourth floor of Palmer Commons, and livestreamed on the Privacy@Michigan events page [https://safecomputing.umich.edu/events/privacy-at-michigan/privacy-day-2023/Keynote-Dr-Martin]

Heartfulness Guided Meditation (February 17, 2023 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/88544 88544-21803321@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 17, 2023 12:00pm

"The Petro-State Masquerade:
Oil and Sovereignty in Trinidad and Tobago"

“The Petro-State Masquerade” considers how postcolonial political futures in the Caribbean nation-state of Trinidad and Tobago came to be staked to the market futures of oil, natural gas, and their petrochemical derivatives.

Drawing on archival and ethnographic research, Jobson theorizes how the tenuous relationship between oil and political power—enshrined in the hyphenated form of the petro-state—is represented by postcolonial state officials as a Carnivalesque “masquerade of permanence” through the perpetual expansion of fossil fuel ventures. At the same time, low oil and gas prices, diminishing reserves, and renewable energy innovations threaten the viability of the Trinbagonian energy sector. In turn, Jobson examines the turn to offshore exploration in the deepwater sector beginning in 1998.

Characterized by protracted production cycles, deepwater ventures feature prohibitive costs and a comparatively low probability of success. After several deepwater ventures failed to yield substantive commercial quantities of oil or gas, the unfulfilled potential of a lucrative offshore geology is invoked to mitigate uncertainty and secure the long-term viability of the Trinbagonian energy sector. In their masquerade, state officials depict fossil fuels as inexhaustible resources waiting to be unearthed by multinational capital and novel extractive technologies.

TITLE: Reducing Uncertainty in Contact-induced Syntactic Change

ABSTRACT: Language change could arise when the younger generation of speakers do not fully replicate the linguistic patterns produced by the older generation. The statistical learning literature has shown that children (and adults too under some conditions) tend to regularize the statistical patterns in their input, i.e. they reduce the amount of variation in the input data (Hudson Kam&Newport 2009). From the information-theoretic perspective, this process reflects the reduction of uncertainty (entropy) in the data. The regularization process over multiple generations has also been formalized using Bayesian models (Reali and Griffiths 2009). These studies, however, were based on artificial language learning paradigms, and the question remains whether and how similar regularization processes could arise in natural languages. In this talk I will present some recent work that investigates word order changes in Cantonese in the last 60 years. Two groups of native Cantonese speakers (18-70 years old, highly proficient speakers) were examined, one from Guangzhou and the other one from Hong Kong. Both Cantonese-speaking communities are in close contact with Mandarin Chinese, but the two communities also have substantial differences in their linguistic experiences and linguistic attitudes. Production data collected on ditransitive constructions revealed regularization patterns in Cantonese across generations in both communities, and crucially, this result is not an assimilation to the Mandarin patterns. A control group of Mandarin speakers in Beijing showed no changes in Mandarin on the same task. These results suggest that the effect of reducing uncertainty/variation is specific to bilingual/multilingual environments. A separate set of experiments suggest that it is likely the bilingual production process, instead of the tracking/encoding of the bilingual input, that led to the observed behavior. Finally, I will also show some preliminary data that found the opposite pattern: in some situations Cantonese speakers also introduced more variants into their language, instead of reducing variants. I tentatively suggest that increasing variation could also be interpreted as uncertainty reduction if we distinguish speaker (production) oriented uncertainty vs. listener (comprehension) oriented uncertainty.

This month we’re back with even more tiny artifacts with big stories. These artifacts are so small, they’re easily missed at the Kelsey Museum, and often appear as just a little circle or square, with the details a blur. This month we’ll get up close to more amulets, seals, coins, figurines, and jewelry, artifacts perfect for exploration in the virtual environment!

The Kelsey Museum's Virtual Saturday Sampler tours are a great way to explore the ancient world from the comfort of your home.

Cow Eye Dissection
Have you ever wondered how we see? To take a closer look at the organ that helps us see the world, join UMMNH staff in dissecting a cow’s eye. How is it similar to and different from our eyes, and those of other animals? Learn the parts of the eye and how they work together. While exploring the lens, we’ll also talk about why some of us need glasses and how we can keep our eyes and our vision healthy.
