Facilitated by Kourtney Pony, MD/MBA Candidate, University of Michigan; Rachel Bergmans, MPH, PhD, Research Investigator, University of Michigan Department of Anesthesiology, Chronic Pain and Fatigue Research Center (CPFRC)

This workshop references work with the Community Advisory Board for Lupus Care and Research (Lupus CAB) as a starting point to discuss racial inequities in healthcare and lupus more specifically. The presentation will be co-led by Kourtney Pony (student lead for the Lupus CAB, 3rd-year medical student) and Dr. Rachel Bergmans (faculty co-leader for the CPFRC Health Equity Core). The workshop will be a mixture of a lecture and group discussion to highlight racial inequities in healthcare. Participants will be divided into groups to discuss a series of questions as each inequity is revealed and they will learn from data that address each response. The nuance this workshop aims to capture is that there is a history of mistreatment towards Black patients within medicine, and there are still present-day problems that we must address to reduce inequities in lupus care and research, as well as the healthcare system in general.

Speaker:
Dipak Kalra, PhD, FRCGP, FACMI, FBCS
President, The European Institute for Innovation through Health Data
Professor of Health Informatics, UCL and Visiting Professor, University of Gant
One of the strongest drivers for Learning Health Systems in Europe right now is the urgency to strengthen health systems resilience through accelerated digital health transformation. This is a direct reaction to the struggles all of our health systems had during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Up to now digital health innovation has occurred in a rather piecemeal way, often through pilots that fail to scale up or be sustained. There is a real gap in the understanding of how digital health solutions, especially patient empowerment for disease self-management through smart technical solutions, can be appropriately targeted to the right patients, influence care pathways in an efficient and safe way, become culturally embraced by clinical teams and accountably adopted by healthcare provider organizations. There are several initiatives and opportunities in progress in Europe to accelerate the adoption of digital health technologies and to support the dissemination of good practices, which will be discussed during this talk.
In parallel, equally urgent, is the recognition that health data must be better used to support learning at scale, for example to be better prepared to gather intelligence rapidly as a lesson learned from the COVID-19 pandemic, and the need to accelerate research that can deliver innovative treatments, devices and algorithms. Many European countries have embarked upon establishing a national or regional health data infrastructure and ecosystem that enables the reuse of data for research. Most exciting of all, the European Commission has announced a multibillion program to establish a European Health Data Space (EHDS). An important success factor for this will be public trust, and therefore getting the governance model right for wide scale data reuse is critical. This talk will explain the approaches being taken across Europe to scale up the ability to analyze large volumes of health data, including its governance, and how the EHDS is anticipated to catalyze a step change in that scale of learning from health data.

The Health Equity Leadership Series is a speaker series that welcomes leaders in the fields of nursing and healthcare to share their expertise and engage members of the UM community in critical thinking, learning, and dialogue about topics in health equity. Our goal is to expose UM faculty, staff, students, and alumni to some of the most pressing and relevant topics in health equity and nursing. Attendees will be challenged to learn, unlearn, and expand upon their own views while also networking with leaders who have a demonstrated commitment to advancing equity in healthcare.

Join us on September 13th as we welcome Dr. Nao Hagiwara, Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology in the College of Humanities and Sciences at Virginia Commonwealth University. The core goal of her research program is to develop theory-driven interventions that are designed to reduce racial/ethnic disparities in healthcare and health and ultimately promote social equity. She grounds her health disparities research in social psychology theories of intergroup bias and examines mechanisms through which stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination contribute to the well-documented racial/ethnic disparities in healthcare and health. Dr. Hagiwara’s presentation will highlight the central role of patient-provider communication processes as the key mechanism underlying racial disparities in both patient-centered outcomes and clinical outcomes.

This event series is hosted by the Office of Health Equity and Inclusion at the University of Michigan School of Nursing. All UM students, faculty, staff, and alumni are welcome to attend. Please register on UM Sessions and send any questions about the Health Equity Leadership Series to Emily Herzog (epawlik@umich.edu).

CPR and the DNAR Order in Older Adults: Historical Development, Modern Outcomes, and Ethical Challenges (September 27, 2023 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/112456 112456-21828958@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, September 27, 2023 12:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Center for Bioethics and Social Sciences in Medicine (CBSSM)

Developed in 1960, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was quickly and widely adopted by the medical profession as a critical life-saving procedure. Given that all end-stage disease processes ultimately result in cardiopulmonary arrest at the end of one’s life, however, CPR was sometimes applied in non-beneficial circumstances or even against patients’ wishes. Originally devised to protect patients from unwanted CPR, the DNAR order is now sometimes unilaterally applied against patients’ or surrogates’ wishes when CPR is felt to be medically non-beneficial. In this presentation, we will explore the historical background surrounding CPR and the DNAR order, examine recent data regarding CPR outcomes specific to older adults, and discuss some of the related ethical challenges, particularly pertaining to the unilateral DNAR order.

Join us on October 11th as we welcome Dr. Lucinda Canty. Dr. Canty is a certified nurse-midwife, Associate Professor, and Director of the Seedworks Health Equity in Nursing Program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst Elaine Marieb College of Nursing. She is also the founder and director of Lucinda’s House, created in 2022 to address the racial disparities in maternal mortality and severe maternal morbidity. Dr. Canty is a mother, nurse, midwife, researcher, nurse educator, historian, reproductive health justice activist, artist, and poet. She has more than 27 years of experience in providing midwifery care, and she exists in many lanes of nursing to address to improve health outcomes for women of color. Dr. Canty earned her PhD in Nursing from the University of Connecticut School of Nursing in 2020, her MSN in Nurse-Midwifery at Yale University School of Nursing in 1994, and her BSN at the Columbia University School of Nursing in 1987.

In her talk, Dr. Canty will be discussing the current state of maternal health, her research into the experience of Black women who experienced life-threatening complications and how everyone, all healthcare team members, can address racial disparities in maternal health.

Speaker:
Ewout W. Steyerberg, PhD
Professor of Clinical Biostatistics & Medical Decision Making, Chair, Dept of Biomedical Data Sciences
Leiden University Medical Center, The Netherlands

Clinical prediction models aim to predict a person’s risk of an outcome (e.g. complications, mortality) given their observed characteristics (1). Risk predictions are traditionally derived from regression models. Artificial Intelligence, and specifically Machine Learning methods, are gaining interest to develop predictive algorithms. Predictions from classic models or AI algorithms need to be reliable to provide valid support for tasks such as shared decision making and whether a person should initiate a particular treatment.
The aim of this talk is to review recent developments in prediction model development and validation. Illustrations will be provided from different medical applications. Trustworthiness will be discussed in relation to the statistical aspects -such as sample size and the exceptionality of patients-, model uncertainty, and heterogeneity between contexts of practical application.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is among the most prevalent chronic human health disorders and the most common form of
arthritis. Specific mechanisms associated with the joint destruction during OA are largely unknown. Due to the
lack of biomarkers, it is impossible to identify patients exhibiting early stages of OA, leading to severe joint
destruction. Furthermore, due to poor understanding of the underlying disease mechanisms, no approved
disease-modifying therapies to treat OA exist. Therefore, early detection and early intervention is critical to
restore joint functions.
My translational research program is directed towards:
(1) Understanding the complex cellular and molecular mechanisms associated with joint destruction during
osteoarthritis
(2) Identifying reliable biomarkers for early identification of patients with osteoarthritis to enable early
intervention using our large-scale OA biobank that we have created (over 150,000 banked specimens)
(3) Identifying novel therapeutic targets to stop/delay osteoarthritis and restore joint function
