Location: William Clements Library
Organized By: William L. Clements Library

As we celebrate the library’s centennial, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.

It builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

The University of Michigan will celebrate the 3rd Annual Juneteenth Symposium. The theme of this year’s event is Systems Check: Exploring Structural Solutions to Systemic Racism.

Juneteenth events honor the progress of African Americans in the U.S. since the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 while continuing to recognize the ongoing efforts to overcome systemic injustices and inequities faced by Black communities. This year’s celebratory events include a community prayer breakfast, a black film festival, and the Kidz Zone tent at the Top of the Park. A host of panel discussions will highlight topics such as housing discrimination and voter suppression, to name a few.

Our hope is to enrich the University of Michigan and Ann Arbor communities by underscoring the importance of Juneteenth ensuring all students, staff, faculty, and residents feel a deep sense of belonging. We hope you can join us for our celebration while we advance our educational mission as a university and seek to empower the community in a longstanding annual tradition to promote Black liberation and excellence.

Author Conversation with Tara Bynum, Assistant Professor of English & African American Studies, The University of Iowa

In the early United States, a Black person committed an act of resistance simply by reading and writing. Yet we overlook that these activities also brought pleasure. Tara A. Bynum tells the compelling stories of four early American writers who expressed feeling good despite living while enslaved or only nominally free. The poet Phillis Wheatley delights in writing letters to a friend. Ministers John Marrant and James Albert Ukawsaw Gronniosaw memorialize their love for God. David Walker’s pamphlets ask Black Americans to claim their victory over slavery. Together, their writings reflect the joyous, if messy, humanity inside each of them. This proof of a thriving interior self in pursuit of good feeling forces us to reckon with the fact that Black lives do matter.

A daring assertion of Black people’s humanity, Reading Pleasures reveals how four Black writers experienced positive feelings and analyzes the ways these emotions served creative, political, and racialized ends.

The Romantic Life at U of M Walking Tour takes you through some of the beautiful and notable portions of the Nichols Arboretum starting at the Peony Garden, as well as a few of the dorms surrounding the Detroit Observatory, where the tour ends. While you learn about the history surrounding these spots, you will also get to hear some stories of the romantic lives of some of our faculty, students, and alumni, as well as some other historical facts about events and lives here at the University of Michigan campus, with an accompanying slideshow filled with photos, scrapbook pages, and letters.

The tour is about 1.5 hours long with a total of a 1.3 mile walk. It should be noted that a portion of the walking tour has a steep hill, though there are stairs at the steepest section. Please also prepare for the weather, as it can be very hot or rainy during tours.

The starting point will be outside the Peony Garden entrance, at the Burnham House located at 1610 Washington Hts Ann Arbor, MI 48109.

Parking is available along the street on Washington Hts, or up off of Observatory St near Forest Hill Cemetery.

Prints of a New Kind details the political strategies and scandals that inspired the first generation of American caricaturists to share news and opinions with their audiences in shockingly radical ways. Complementing studies on British and European printmaking, this book is a survey and catalogue of all known American political caricatures created in the country’s transformative early years, as the nation sought to define itself in relation to European models of governance and artistry.

On the third Friday of the month, the Clements Library hosts a virtual Bookworm program that gathers authors, collectors, fellows and University staff for a conversation on a variety of history topics. Inspired by the traditional Clements Library Tea Time, attendees are encouraged to post comments and questions, respond to polls, and add to the conversation. On August 18th, the Bookworm will host U-M Professor Jason Young, curator of Hear Me Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield, South Carolina--an exhibition that will open at UMMA on August 26th.

Hear Me Now is a landmark exhibition of more than 60 objects representing the work of African American potters in the decades surrounding the Civil War. The exhibition features monumental storage jars by the enslaved and literate potter and poet Dave, later recorded as David Drake (about 1800–about 1870), while the inclusion of several contemporary works from leading Black artists links the past to the present. Working primarily in clay, these artists respond to the legacy of the Edgefield potters and consider the resonance of this history for audiences today.

For more information, please call The Clements Library at 734-764-2347 or visit https://clements.umich.edu/public-programs/bookworm.

We invite you to join us on a guided tour where you can delve deeper into the rich tapestry of Clements' early American history and culture collections. Experience the allure of our esteemed treasures, including the legendary painting "Death of General Wolfe" by Benjamin West, a remarkable trunk from the Revolutionary War era that once safeguarded General Gage's papers, and much more!

You will also have the opportunity to explore the Clements' Centennial exhibit titled "Building on a Century of Collecting at the Clements Library." This extraordinary exhibition aims to address a question frequently posed by our visitors: How does the Clements Library determine which materials to acquire and include in its cherished collections?

Join exhibition co-curator and U-M Associate Professor of History Jason Young for an exploration of the dynamic exhibition Hear Me Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield, South Carolina. Hear Me Now centers around the complicated history and continuing legacy of an African American ceramic tradition that emerged out of the plantation economies of Edgefield, South Carolina. As an artistic tradition rooted in the history of American slavery, the exhibition highlights the tangled histories of race, slavery and art in this country. The exhibition features historic work including monumental storage jars by the enslaved and literate potter and poet Dave, later recorded as David Drake as well as leading contemporary Black artists who have responded to or whose practice resonates with the Edgefield story. Established figures like Theaster Gates and Simone Leigh, as well as younger, emerging artists like Adebunmi Gbadebo, Woody De Othello, and Robert Pruitt, have contributed to the show. Working primarily in clay, these artists respond to the legacy of the Edgefield potters and consider the resonance of this history for audiences today.

Hear Me Now is organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, with support from the Terra Foundation for American Art and the Henry Luce Foundation.

Lead support for UMMA's presentation of the exhibition is provided by Michigan Engineering, the U-M Office of the Provost, the U-M Office of the President, the Americana Foundation, the U-M College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, the U-M Inclusive History Project, and Michigan Humanities. Additional generous support is provided by Larry and Brenda Thompson and Melissa Kaish and Jonathan Dorfman.

The Other 9-11: Reflections on the Anniversary of the 1973 Coup in Chile. “Secrets of State: The Declassified History of the Chilean Dictatorship” Exhibit (August 28, 2023 8:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/111387 111387-21826931@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, August 28, 2023 8:00am
Location: Weiser Hall

The documents in this exhibit were declassified and made public as a result of years of research and FOIA advocacy by those promoting openness, particularly members of the National Security Archive. In the wake of the historic arrest in London of General Pinochet in October 1998, their efforts, among others, led President Bill Clinton to launch a special Chile Declassification Project in 1999 and the eventual release of over 24,000 formerly top secret documents.

Curated by Peter Kornbluh (Director of the Chile Documentation Project at the National Security Archive, an NGO dedicated to freedom of information and transparency), this exhibit was co-designed by Eimeel Castillo (Ph.D. Candidate in History and Women’s and Gender Studies) and Victoria Langland (Associate Professor of History).

CSAS Lecture Series | Tata: The Global Corporation That Built Indian Capitalism (September 8, 2023 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/96920 96920-21793568@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, September 8, 2023 4:00pm

From one of many merchant families in the colonial port city of Bombay, making their fortunes in the cotton and opium trades, the Tata business group ascended to the commanding heights of the Indian national economy by the time of independence in 1947 - and has remained at or near the top ever since. Tata companies spun textiles, forged steel, generated hydroelectric power, and took to the skies by pioneering air travel. In parallel, Tata-funded philanthropic institutions channelled transnational technology and knowledge flows in the realms of engineering, social science, medicine, and atomic research. What explains this extraordinary resilience and diversification? What contestations and contradictions does it mask? Mircea Raianu's book argues that private corporations like Tata played a crucial role in the development of Indian capitalism by assuming quasi-sovereign functions – at times acting like a state, at other times in direct opposition to state aims. Tata was both a “surrogate state” and a “state within a state” wielding power over domains of its own: company towns, model villages, scientific laboratories, and universities. This talk explores the evolution of this fraught state-capital relationship in times of transition and crisis.

From the celebrated and award-winning composer Dave Malloy comes Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812, an electropop opera based on a scandalous slice of Leo Tolstoy’s War and Peace. Young and impulsive, Natasha Rostova arrives in Moscow to await the return of her fiancé from the front lines. When she falls under the spell of the roguish Anatole, it is up to Pierre, a family friend in the middle of an existential crisis, to pick up the pieces of her shattered reputation. Following a critically exalted premiere at Ars Nova in New York City, a subsequent Off-Broadway transfer, and an acclaimed run on Broadway, this award-winning musical expands the possibilities for the genre with its daring score and bold storytelling.

EIHS Lecture: Who “Invented” Identity Politics?: The Role of Twentieth Century Frameworks and Histories in the Twenty-First Century Debate (September 14, 2023 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/108401 108401-21819543@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, September 14, 2023 4:00pm
Location: Tisch Hall
Organized By: Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies

One of the striking features of contemporary political commentary and related historical work is the denunciation of "identity politics" by those on both the right and the left of the political spectrum. Both sides in the debate deploy historical understandings of “when” identity politics was “invented,” but neither is very self-conscious about the histories they deploy or the history of those histories. More than they may realize, a politically informed search for and claims about an “unidentified” political subject, beginning in the “Progressive” era and continuing through the twentieth century, has hugely influenced perspectives on both “sides” of the twentieth century debate.

Terrence J. (Terry) McDonald has returned to the University of Michigan Department of History after serving as interim and permanent dean of the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts for eleven years and director of the Bentley Historical Library for nine. As professor of history and Arthur F. Thurnau Professor he has written and taught in the history of the American city and is currently finishing a book manuscript contracted by the University of Chicago Press entitled: “Close Encounters: Jane Addams, Johnny Powers, and the Progressive Political Imagination.”

This event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

Teacher, columnist, social justice activist, politician, advisor, director of several public agencies, and more: Ann Arbor native and U-M alum Josephine Fellows Gomon (LSA 1913) had an impact on Detroit, on Michigan, and on social justice across the nation -- an impact matched by few others. Join us for a presentation by Michelle McClellan and learn about Gomon's life and work in the context of women's roles in the early and mid 20th century, including her involvement in the birth control movement and her service as director of women personnel at the Willow Run bomber plant during WWII. Find out why the Detroit Free Press called her "the City's Conscience."

Michelle McClellan is the Johanna Meijer Magoon Principal Archivist at the Bentley Historical Library, University of Michigan. She serves as the field archivist for the Michigan Historical Collections, aiming to preserve diverse stories from across the state. Michelle earned her Ph.D. in American history from Stanford University and her M.S.I. from the University of Michigan. Before coming to the Bentley, Michelle worked in academia, museums, and historic preservation. She has published on the history of women and medicine, on “Little House” heritage tourism, and on how museums and historic sites can highlight formerly hidden stories. Most recently, she co-authored “Not Even Past: Archiving 2020 in Real Time” with Aprille McKay, which appeared in the volume Being Human during COVID-19 (University of Michigan Press, 2021).

For those attending in person, the event will be followed by tours of the Observatory, with observing if weather permits.

The recent explosion, or perhaps just greater visibility, of ethno-racial, ethno-religious, and other nationalist projects that seek to tightly intertwine identity and culture underscore the necessity of re-examining and freshly analyzing the connections between culture and identity. This nexus, though extraordinarily durable, is also mutable over time, putting the practice of history in dialogue with new or transformed communities of interest who have claims on shifting visions of culture. Our three panelists, all freshly back from a year immersed in their own research, are well positioned to explore how the conventions of history and its writing both facilitate and impede these endeavors as they discuss how they must both lean on and push against history.

Panelists:

• Farina Mir (Associate Professor, History, University of Michigan)
• Ian Moyer (Associate Professor, History, University of Michigan)
• Carina Ray (A.M. and H.P. Bentley Chair in African History and Associate Professor of History, University of Michigan)
• Valerie A. Kivelson (moderator; Thomas N. Tentler Collegiate Professor; Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of History, University of Michigan)

This event presented by the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible in part by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg.

Have you ever wondered about the history of the buildings that sit in the middle of campus that many associate with the Renaissance, east coast Ivy Leagues, or even Hogwarts?

This walking tour seeks to familiarize you not only with the illustrious, imposing architecture of the Law Quadrangle here at the University of Michigan but also with the historic presence of the Law School itself. Over the course of 1.5 hours, we will discuss the conception of the buildings themselves, the winding roads it took to get there, and the Law School’s many years of influence on social issues and legal education as we stroll through the Quad. Join us as we uncover stories and debunk myths about the distinctive University of Michigan Law Quadrangle.

The tour starts on the southeast corner of State St. and N University. Please dress weather appropriate.

Silent Pasts and Speaking Presents: History and Language in Contemporary South Asia (September 22, 2023 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/109146 109146-21821170@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, September 22, 2023 4:00pm
Location: Weiser Hall
Organized By: Department of History

Please join Professor G.N. Devy for a presentation on two recent, major intellectual initiatives that pose significant challenges to the ongoing politicization of language, community, and history in contemporary India.

The first project is the massive, People’s Linguistic Survey of India (published by Orient Blackswan, 2013-23), a 50+-volume survey of more than 780 languages currently spoken in India today, many of which now struggle for recognition and preservation, as perceived by the people who speak them.

The second, The Indians: Histories of a Civilization (published by Aleph, 2023), is a seven-part history of India spanning more than 12,000 years, with contributions from more than 100 of South Asia’s most prominent historians and ethnographers, including two U-M faculty members (professors emeriti Thomas Trautmann and Madhav Deshpande).

G.N. Devy organized and edited both of these ambitious and historically important projects. Both projects creatively draw a bright line under the intimate relation between democracy and diversity, and work against contemporary political efforts to homogenize India’s cultures and sanitize India’s pasts. Professor Devy’s presentation will describe the genesis and approach of each project, and reflect more broadly on the place of diversity in India as a nation, as people, and as a spectrum of cultures.

Ganesh N. Devy is a scholar, educator, activist, and the Obaid Sidiqqi Chair Professor at the National Center for Biological Research, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Bangalore. He is a prolific writer, having authored or edited 109 books in the fields of literary criticism, anthropology, education, and philosophy. From 1980 to 1996, Devy was a professor in the Department of English at Maharaja Sayajirao University in Baroda.

In 1996, Devy gave up his academic career to initiate a deeper engagement with Adivasi and Denotified and Nomadic Tribal (DNT) communities. Devy went on to found the Bhasha Research and Publication Center in Baroda, the Adivasis Academy at Tejgadh village, and the DNT Rights Action Group, among several other initiatives. Professor Devy has also been the recipient of numerous national and international awards, including the Padma Shri (India’s fourth highest civilian award, given by the Indian government) in 2013. In 2003, Devy received the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award for his pathbreaking book of literary criticism, After Amnesia (Orient Blackswan, 1993). In 2015, Devy returned this award in protest over the “growing intolerance towards the differences of opinion” then manifesting in the murder and imprisonment of several prominent intellectuals in India.
