DESIGNING A DREAM: THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE “BLUE DREAM” HOUSE BY DS+R (September 21, 2023 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/111190 111190-21826181@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, September 21, 2023 6:00pm
Location: Walgreen Drama Center
Organized By: A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning

As the brainchild of collectors Julie Reyes Taubman and Robert Taubman, Blue Dream is an extraordinary house designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) that sought to renew the legacy of modernist architecture and art in the Hamptons. In advance of the launch of the eponymous book published by DelMonico Books, architecture critic Paul Goldberger will discuss the complex design process behind Blue Dream with DS+R partner Charles Renfro and Associate Principal Holly Deichmann. The panel discussion will offer insights into how Blue Dream reinterprets organic architecture for the 21st century, and stands as a striking addition to the roster of architecturally ambitious modernist houses on Long Island.

Paul Goldberger is a Contributing Editor at Vanity Fair. From 1997 through 2011, he served as the Architecture Critic for The New Yorker, where he wrote the magazine’s celebrated “Sky Line” column. He is the author of numerous books, including BALLPARK: Baseball in the American City, Building Art: The Life and Work of Frank Gehry, Building with History, Why Architecture Matters, Building Up and Tearing Down, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, and DUMBO: The Making of a Neighborhood and the Rebirth of Brooklyn. He also holds the Joseph Urban Chair in Design and Architecture at The New School in New York City and was formerly Dean of the Parsons School of Design at The New School.

He began his career at The New York Times, where in 1984 his architecture criticism was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Distinguished Criticism. In 2012 he received the Vincent Scully Prize from the National Building Museum in recognition of the influence his writing has had on the public’s understanding of architecture. In 2017, he received the Award in Architecture of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, which called him “the doyen of American architectural critics.”

Charles Renfro joined Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) in 1997 and became a Partner in 2004. He was the Partner-in-Charge of Blue Dream, leading the complex design process. He led the design and construction of the studio’s first concert hall outside of the US – The Tianjin Juilliard School in China – as well as the studio’s first public park outside of the US – Zaryadye Park in Moscow. Charles has also led the design of much of DS+R’s academic portfolio, with projects completed at Stanford University, UC Berkeley, Brown University, the University of Chicago, and the recently completed Columbia Business School. Charles is also leading the design of two projects in his native Texas: the renovation of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Kalita Humphreys Theater in Dallas, and Sarofim Hall, a new home for Rice University’s Visual Arts department in Houston. Charles is a board member of BOFFO, a nonprofit organization that supports the work of queer LGBTQ+ BIPOC artists and designers. He has twice been recognized with the “Out100” list, and also distinguished as a notable LGBTQ leader by Crain’s New York Business. He is a faculty member of the School of Visual Arts.

Holly Deichmann is an Associate Principal at Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R). She was the Project Director for Blue Dream, overseeing the complex design process alongside Partner-in-Charge Charles Renfro. She was also the Project Architect of the United States Olympic & Paralympic Museum in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and the Project Director for the adjoining Park Union Bridge, a curved steel structure connecting the museum campus to the adjacent America the Beautiful Park. Holly was also the Project Director for the recently-completed Susan Wakil Health Building at the University of Sydney in Australia. She is currently the Project Director for the New Museum of Transport in Budapest, a new home for the museum located on the brownfield site of a former train repair facility.

Foundations of Community Engagement is an interactive workshop for students that introduces principles and practices of equitable, ethical community engagement. Participants will develop a deeper understanding of what the term “community engagement” means, as well as the many forms it might take - from research and course-based projects to philanthropy, activism, policy, and direct service. Across all these forms of engagement, participants will learn concepts and actions that promote equitable partnerships, center community-defined priorities, and disrupt entrenched power dynamics between universities and community members. Participants will also discuss real-world community engagement scenarios that ask them to apply what they’ve learned in the workshop to various situations.

**New for 2023-24, this workshop is an updated version of Ginsberg’s long-standing Entering, Engaging, and Exiting (E3) session. If you’ve attended that session in the past, you’ll gain additional knowledge from this session.**

Community Protest, Violence, and Business Support for a Social Activist Cause: Evidence from the Black Lives Matter Movement (September 29, 2023 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/109979 109979-21823497@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, September 29, 2023 1:30pm
Location: Ross School of Business
Organized By: Interdisciplinary Committee on Organizational Studies - ICOS

We examine how companies respond to reported violence in protests in their local communities. Building on the community embeddedness literature, we propose that business leaders can interpret protest violence as evidence of social disorder or a valid grievance, and that this interpretation is influenced by the history of the community context in which the violence occurs and where their companies are headquartered. In particular, we examine the history of grievance-validating events and the history of protest violence in local communities, and posit that these factors shape whether companies offer their support for the cause of a protest in which violence is reported. Using a hand-collected dataset on corporate diversity actions following the 2020 Black Lives Matter movement, we find that violence in protests was more likely to elicit supportive corporate diversity actions that align with the movement’s goals when the protests occurred in communities with a history of severe police shootings. We also find that violence in protests was less likely to elicit those actions when the protests occurred in communities with histories of persistent protest violence. We discuss several implications for research on social movements, community embeddedness, stakeholder strategy, and corporate activism.

Sam Schillace has been all over the tech world map and has quite the journey to share at EHour this Friday 10/6. He's been a serial entrepreneur, jumping into all sorts of cool projects, from video games to creating early web page software, word processors, and even application engines. And the best part? He's done it all. He's given us some cool consumer stuff like Box, and he's also delved into the enterprise world.

Remember when Google Docs was a revolutionary idea? Yep, Sam started it. Nowadays, he's all about consumer product culture and next-gen productivity. He's the kind of guy who's always pushing boundaries and asking those "What if?" questions in the ever-changing tech world.

Currently, Sam is a deputy CTO at Microsoft. Here, he's involved in a range of projects, from shaping product culture to infrastructure and AI incubation. He's truly a jack-of-all-trades in the tech world. Seriously, he's like a tech wizard.

And let's not forget his college days. Sam's a true-blue Wolverine, graduating from the University of Michigan specializing in combinatorics, and earned his BS honors in math in just 3.5 years. Oh, and he didn't stop there - he powered through and got his MS in a quick 3 semesters.

You've got a great opportunity to soak up some wisdom from this tech guru. Come hear Sam Schillace share his insight Friday October 6, 11:30am Stamps Auditorium. You don’t want to miss it!

The fourth year of the Vietnam War, 1969 was the deadliest for Americans. It was also the year those Americans had the North Vietnamese on the ropes. Hanoi was about to ask for terms when President Richard Nixon called first, prompting them not to give up. This year’s Vietnam Panel features three Veterans who were in the air and on the ground of the Mekong Delta in 1969. All saw action and acts of humanity they have never forgotten and came home to long and successful civilian careers. What do they think today of the first war America thought it had lost?

Zingermans has been an iconic Ann Arbor institution for over 40 years, but the company is so much more than just delicious sandwiches. They are leaders in the community and food service industry, founders of a nonprofit food rescue program and food bank, and deliver the Zingermans experience in eleven different businesses with roughly $70,000,000 in annual sales. All while staying true to their beliefs.

Although most of us don’t realize it, our beliefs have a major impact on how things go in our lives. What we believe may or may not be true, but unknowingly most of us will behave in ways that reinforce our beliefs anyway. In this workshop, keynote, Ari Weinzweig, Cofounding Partner of Zingerman’s Community of Businesses, will take a look at how the impact of those beliefs likely plays out in our day-to-day experiences, and how our workplaces, social circles, and we are impacted by those beliefs. Whether we accept it or not, what we believe about ourselves, our organization, our co-workers, our boss, the work that we do and our ability to do it will significantly alter the outcomes we are seeking to achieve. And how, by becoming more mindful of our beliefs, we can effectively backtrack— by altering our beliefs, we change the way we see our work and the world and then, in turn, significantly alter the outcomes we get from our efforts.

Ari Weinzweig

Ari Weinzweig is CEO and co-founding partner of Zingerman’s Community of Businesses, which includes Zingerman's Delicatessen, Bakehouse, Creamery, Catering, Mail Order, ZingTrain, Coffee Company, Roadhouse, Candy Manufactory, Events at Cornman Farms, Miss Kim, and Zingerman’s Food Tours.

Zingerman’s produces, sells, and serves all sorts of full flavored, traditional foods in its home of Ann Arbor, Michigan to the tune of $70,000,000 a year in annual sales. Ari was recognized as one of the “Who’s Who of Food & Beverage in America” by the 2006 James Beard Foundation and has awarded a Bon Appétit Lifetime Achievement Award, among many recognitions. Ari is the author of a number of articles and books, including Zingerman’s Guide to Good Eating, Zingerman’s Guide to Better Bacon, Zingerman’s Guide to Giving Great Service, Zingerman’s Guide to Good Leading, Part 1: A Lapsed Anarchist’s Approach to Building a Great Business, Zingerman's Guide to Good Leading, Part 2: A Lapsed Anarchist’s Approach to Being a Better Leader, Zingerman's Guide to Good Leading, Part 3: A Lapsed Anarchist's Approach to Managing Ourselves, Zingerman's Guide to Good Leading, and Part 4: A Lapsed Anarchist's Approach to the Power of Beliefs in Business.

In 2017, Ari was named one of “The World's 10 Top CEOs (They Lead in a Totally Unique Way)” by Inc. Magazine. In 2018, he released the pamphlet, “The Art of Business: Why I Want to be an Artist.” Another pamphlet, “Going into Business with Emma Goldman” came out in June, 2019. “Humility: A Humble, Anarchistic Inquiry” came out in October, 2020. “Working Through Hard Times: Life and Leadership Learnings from 2020” was published in the first weeks of 2021 and “The Story of Visioning at Zingerman’s: Four Visions, Forty Years, and a Positive Look Towards the Future,” came out in the spring of 2022. Ari’s most recent work, “A Taste of Zingerman’s Food Philosophy: Forty Years of Mindful Cooking and Eating,” was published in April of 2023.

Organized By: Sessions @ Michigan

Cynthia Finelli has been named the David C. Munson, Jr. Collegiate Professor of Engineering. A reception will immediately follow the talk.

Since its integration into higher education in the late 18th century, engineering education has undergone significant change, spurred by professional societies, funding agencies, and accreditation bodies. In this presentation, I will reflect on transformations in the engineering education landscape I have observed over the past two decades and highlight some of my research group’s contributions to this space. Specifically, I will touch on advancements in faculty development initiatives, pedagogy and instruction, the integration of sociotechnical issues into the curriculum, and support for a diverse student body in engineering. Collectively, these advancements have instilled a culture of inclusive teaching and learning at UM and beyond.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Information and Technology Services (ITS)

Dr. Alessandro Acquisti, Trustees Professor of Information Technology and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University's Heinz College, and the co-director of the CMU Center for Behavioral Decision Research (CBDR), will deliver a presentation on the economics of privacy in the context of augmenting economic arguments with non-economic considerations in order to address the broad concept of privacy.

Dr. Acquisti will discuss how the economics of privacy could expand its horizons and relevance both by considering economic dimensions and research questions that have so far received limited attention, and by accounting for the broader scholarship on privacy coming from other disciplines. As a complement to the contributions of other fields, rather than a substitute for them, the economics of privacy may keep thriving and remain a useful tool for debate and policy making.

Dr. Andrea Forte, Professor of Information and Dean of the University of Michigan School of Information, will deliver opening remarks.

Dr. Florian Schaub, Associate Professor of Information, School of Information, and Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, College of Engineering, will facilitate a panel discussion including Dr. Nazanin Andalibi, U-M Assistant Professor of Information, School of Information and Assistant Professor of Digital Studies Institute, College of LSA and Dr. Kirsten Martin, William P. and Hazel B. White Professor of Technology Ethics and is Professor of IT, Analytics, and Operations in the Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame, after the presentation.

The event is free and open to the public.

About the Community Engagement @ Michigan Series
Ginsberg’s Community Engagement @ Michigan Series for faculty and staff addresses critical topics in community-engaged teaching and learning, research, scholarship, and program/project development. Open to Faculty, Admin/Staff, and Postdocs. Some sessions open to Graduate Students.

ABOUT THIS EVENT
Developing equitable and mutually beneficial partnerships with community members and organizations requires taking a critical look at how power operates in university-community partnerships. This interactive workshop will introduce participants to key principles of equity-focused community engagement and discuss how relationships of power shape university-community partnerships for research and student learning. We’ll consider how power operates in such areas as: the structure and terms of partnership agreements, participation dynamics in university-community projects, and funding/compensation. Participants will generate strategies for re-shaping inequitable power dynamics, share insights with colleagues, and identify ways to apply key principles to their own community-engaged work.

This session is designed especially for participants who are involved in (or interested in) community-engaged research, teaching & learning, project/program administration, and/or campus initiatives at Michigan.

Location: Power Center for the Performing Arts
Organized By: TEDxUofM

TEDxUofM’s 15th annual conference is all about the theme “Golden Ratio”. First discovered in 300 BCE, the golden ratio has been a mathematical distillation of beauty for centuries. Not only has it been embraced by artists, appearing in famous works like the Mona Lisa and Parthenon, the golden radio has been ever-present in the natural world, from the smallest flower to the largest spiral galaxy. Our speakers’ talks will encourage our audience to slow down and see the inherent splendor around them amidst a modern, fast-paced world. With our first speaker headliner confirmed for the year, TEDxUofM is curating a lineup of thought leaders committed to sparking game-changing conversations.

During the conference, you will have the opportunity to listen to world-renowned UofM and Ann Arbor members who are immensely successful in their fields. They will share their "ideas worth spreading" in their TEDxUofM talks and you have the opportunity after the conference to potentially meet or network with them.

There will also be lab activities before and during intermission that you will interact with. In the past, we have had activities such as a Partnership Lab between Google and TEDxUofM, where attendees had the opportunity to try Google's Cardboard VR headsets, and another year, we had a lab where attendees got to make their own perfume scents.

We’re excited to be featuring 7 amazing speakers this year! Here’s some more information:

Carhartt’s VP of Global Product Design, Ben Ewy- Empathetic Design is Sustainable Design 🌀🌱🎨
A University of Michigan Athletic Trainer, Claire Coates- The Bane and Beauty of Athletic Injury 💪🩹⚖️
The Deputy Director of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, Daniel Högsta- The Myth of Nuclear Weapons: Stories that Shine Through the Mushroom Cloud 🕊️🌍🏆
A University of Michigan English professor, Noha Beydoun- The Personal Path to Anti-Racism 📚🌐🤝
The former New Yorker Cartoon Editor, Robert Mankoff- AI & Comedy 📰🖥️🤣
A distinguished MSNBC / NBC News Anchor, filmmaker, and author, Richard Lui- Selflessness Post Covid and Taking Care of Others 🎬📖🤝
A Tony Award-winning actress and end-of-life doula, Celia Keenan-Bolger- Embracing Mortality to Enrich Life 🎭💀🧘

Stay tuned for fabulous performing groups and entertainers, as well as inspiring lab activities! Also, look forward to our goodie bags being given out to all attendees! 🎁

ABOUT
Story Lab develops executive-level presence and communication skills through storytelling workshops and events. To be an effective leader — at work, in the community, or in your personal life — you must be able to communicate with impact. Often this means telling stories that are meaningful to you and others, and doing so in the rich language and expressive style of a seasoned storyteller. If you can craft and deliver an effective story, you will be better able to convey your value to recruiters, inspire and motivate classmates and colleagues, and influence your audience. At Story Lab, you’ll find an immersive experience and an opportunity to hone your skills in a safe and supportive environment.

Our multidisciplinary panel will delve deep into the menacing phenomenon of doxxing, laying bare its definition, characteristics, and the motivations behind it. They will tackle the complex legal implications, bringing you up to speed with the current framework, laws, potential legal actions, and their limitations in dealing with issues related to doxxing.

We are welcoming in School of Information faculty member Dr. Sarita Schoenebeck.

Latinx Research Week 2024 (March 11, 2024 12:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/119599 119599-21843054@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, March 11, 2024 12:00am
Location: Michigan Union
Organized By: Puentes

Puentes is excited about its upcoming Latinx Research Week (LRW). Latinx Research Week is an interdisciplinary, conference-style series of events that we host annually on campus to uplift research being conducted by Latinx staff, faculty, and students, as well as research relevant to Latinx populations. This year Latinx Research Week will be held on March 11th - 14th in the Michigan Union. In 2023, we were thrilled to host 16 research sessions, allocate space for over 70 presenters, and welcome over 300 attendees across our events. We hope to see an even greater turn out this year.

he theme for Latinx Research Week 2024 is Illuminating Familismo. Familismo is a psychological construct as well as a protective Latinx cultural value that emphasizes the importance of family support, loyalty, and honor. Through our interdisciplinary program, we hope attendees will reflect on, interrogate, and reimagine how the academy can be transformed to acknowledge, welcome, and illuminate both our biological and chosen familial relationships. In past years, we have seen spouses, partners, siblings, parents, children, and members of the larger Latinx community attend Latinx Research Week in support of their presenting family members, thus reimagining what an academic conference could and should look like. Additionally, we have seen other families in attendance: families of co-workers, cohort-mates, best friends, and lab families to name a few. We recognize that many members of the Puentes familia may be far from home but have still chosen to plant roots here and create meaningful communities of chosen family members at UM. We hope that our curated program will illuminate the importance of familismo and encourage attendees to imagine how we can transform academic spaces into more inclusive spaces that honor our families, chosen or otherwise, and the ways they have supported our academic journeys. Latinx Research Week 2024: Illuminating Familiso highlights the many ways our families motivate, inspire, encourage, humanize, and uplift us as we conduct groundbreaking work in our respective fields.

Are you passionate about social justice, advocacy, or service and trying to determine your next steps at UM or beyond? Interested in pursuing a career that allows you to enact positive social change? Join us for our Learning in Community workshop focused on “Pathways.”

“The Pathways to Civic Engagement and Community Change” is a framework that describes a range of possibilities by which you can exercise your own power to create a better world, including direct service, community organizing, policy-making, community-engaged research, social entrepreneurialism, and philanthropy. These pathways intersect and overlap, demonstrating the interdependent nature of working toward the common good. At the end of this workshop you’ll be better able to assess what kinds of opportunities are the best match with your personality, talents, and passions. Whether you are considering what extracurriculars to get involved with, or making choices about graduate school and careers, the Pathways workshop can help guide you the next steps in your social justice journey.

Organized By: Sessions @ Michigan
