PSC Brownbag Series: Discordance in chromosomal and self-reported sex in the UK Biobank: Implications for transgender- and intersex-inclusive data collection (October 30, 2023 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/111279 111279-21826617@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, October 30, 2023 12:00pm
Location: Institute For Social Research
Organized By: Population Studies Center

The PSC Brown Bag Series runs live and on Zoom this year, Mondays from noon to 1.

Social epidemiologist Kate Duchowny (University of Michigan, SRC) presents this brown bag seminar:

"Discordance in chromosomal and self-reported sex in the UK Biobank: Implications for transgender- and intersex-inclusive data collection"

Despite recent calls to distinguish between sex and gender, these constructs are often assessed in isolation or are used interchangeably. In this talk, she will present data that quantifies the disagreement between chromosomal and self-reported sex and identifies potential reasons for discordance using data from the UK Biobank. She and coauthors show that among approximately 200 individuals with sex discordance, 71% of discordances were explained by intersex traits or transgender identity. These findings imply that health and clinical researchers have a unique opportunity to advance the rigor of scientific research as well as the health and well-being of transgender, intersex, and nonbinary people, who have long been excluded from and overlooked in clinical and survey research.

Kate Duchowny (she/her) is a Research Assistant Professor in the Survey Research Center at the University of Michigan's Institute for Social Research. As a social epidemiologist, her research focuses on the measurement, determinants, and consequences of compromised muscle health among older adults. Her overarching research goal seeks to inform interventions by bridging the social, environmental, and biological determinants of musculoskeletal health and physical functioning across the life course. She is particularly interested in identifying novel biomarkers that aid in our understanding of how social experiences become biologically embedded to produce and exacerbate health inequities.

Come join us for a talk with Bella DePaulo (PhD, Harvard), the author of Single at Heart: The Power, Freedom, and Heart-Filling Joy of Single Life, as well as other books and more than 150 scholarly publications. She has been described by Atlantic magazine as "America's foremost thinker and writer on the single experience." Her TEDx talk, “What no one ever told you about people who are single,” has been viewed more than 1.7 million times. Professor DePaulo is an Academic Affiliate in the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, University of California, Santa Barbara. She has always been single and always will be. Below is a description of her talk:

In my decades of studying single people, I’ve found that many single people are flourishing, not despite being single but because of it. I call them “single at heart.” They invest in their single lives and that pays off. Why are so many people so convinced that single life is a lesser life? The stories we tell about single people are typically generated from a coupled person’s perspective, with the values and interests of coupled people as the standard against which single people are judged and often found wanting.

Drawing from social science research, sometimes based on hundreds of thousands of people from dozens of nations, I will show the ways in which single people – especially the single at heart – are leading joyful, meaningful, and psychologically rich lives. To flourish as a single person is especially impressive because of the “singlism” singles face – the stereotyping, stigmatizing, and marginalizing of single people, and the discrimination against them.

All through my presentation, I will draw parallels with people who are on the aromantic spectrum. By resisting the deficit narratives imposed on them and understanding their lives in terms of who they really are “at heart,” a whole different narrative of a big, open-hearted, expansive aromantic life will emerge.

Seminar Date: 3/18/24

Love Her Collective: Developing and sustaining a community-academic partnership to address HIV inequities among transgender women of color in Detroit

Transgender women of color have a long history of organizing, activism, and service to sustain their communities under hostile social, political, and economic conditions. However, research efforts to address the health inequities these communities face often fail to ensure transgender women of color have meaningful leadership roles throughout the entire research process. The “Love Her Collective” is a community-academic partnership between Trans Sistas of Color Project-Detroit (TSoCP) and researchers at the University of Michigan School of Public Health formed around the needs, interests, and priorities of transgender women of color in Detroit. Over the past 6 years, the Love Her Collective has conducted several projects to identify and address social determinants of HIV inequities in this community. This presentation will describe community-led projects addressing violence and trauma, legal barriers to legal gender affirmation, and economic vulnerability. It will focus on the ethics and benefits surrounding community leadership in health equity research and include concrete recommendations for population health researchers working with populations frequently excluded and marginalized by academic research.

Kristi E. Gamarel (she/her) is an Associate Professor and Associate Chair of Department of Health Behavior and Health Education at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. She has a background in social and personality psychology with additional training in health psychology and public health. Her program of research focuses on LGBTQ+ health, with a particular focus on using CBPR principles to understand and address health inequities.

Join us for a zine-making workshop with Dr. Ela Przybylo focused on thinking about attraction and relationships through making. Dr. Przybylo will explore the many ways in which asexuality, as a queer orientation, poses a queer challenge to our thinking around sexuality, gender, and romance culture. Looking at examples from popular culture and contemporary young adult texts, including on social media, they will also provide an introduction to some of the main coordinates of asexuality studies including its conceptual contributions around rethinking compulsory sexuality, romance, and kinship. Participants will create a one-page zine as they explore these ideas.

Title: Want to Be a Future HIV Prevention and Treatment Researcher? You’re Going to Need to Get Critical

Abstract:
Critical theories — think, intersectionality, critical race theory, structural racism, for example — are those that expose, interrogate, and challenge power by highlighting the social, structural, political, and economic determinants of health. Critical approaches offer a stark contrast to the primarily individualistic, biomedical, psychosocial theories and frameworks that still dominate most doctoral social and behavioral science programs. With a handful of exceptions, people’s thoughts, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors about HIV testing, condom use, PrEP, and HAART adherence remain the primary focus of doctoral-level HIV education. Structural and political determinants of health, and the constraints they impose on the ability of groups historically marginalized at multiple intersections (e.g., racialized/ minoritized, sexual and/or gender minority, and low SES) to engage in health promoting behaviors are rarely a focus of doctoral training. But they should be. The indomitable Audre Lorde admonished that the “Master’s tools will not dismantle the Master’s house.” This is also true of conventional approaches to HIV prevention and treatment research. More than four decades into the HIV epidemic and despite PrEP and HAART, HIV still disproportionately affects Black and Latino gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, transgender and nonbinary people, and Black and Latina women who have sex with men. These intersectional HIV inequities spotlight a dire need for a more critical approach to Ending the HIV Epidemic, than the conventional theoretical approaches used thus far. This talk will address what it means to get critical about HIV prevention and treatment research, some strategies for doing so, and why SOAR students should consider critical and structural perspectives to be essential to their future HIV research careers.
