Sense of Self: The Islamic Contemporary (March 24, 2023 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/105043 105043-21810641@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 24, 2023 10:00am
Location: East Quadrangle
Organized By: Residential College

Despite recent panels and scholarship aiming to dispel the notion, there is a conception that contemporary art and religion are incompatible.

When paired with the Islamophobic sentiment that Islam is destructive, rather than constructive like artistic practices and that it even forbids many forms of artistic production, there is a presumption that contemporary art that engages with Islam as religion and faith (rather than simply as identity) cannot exist.

There is an additional assumption that those who identify as women, queer, trans, and non-binary are unlikely to engage with Islam in their work outside of critique, because of the belief that Islam is inherently (and uniquely) oppressive of and therefore contradictory to individuals who identify as such.

In an attempt to disabuse viewers of these notions, as well as give a space of exploration to these often overlooked or excluded voices, this exhibition brings together women, queer, trans, and non-binary Muslim artists who explore their connection to religion, their other identities (be those related to their race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, or status as artists), and their practices.

Part of the Meet the Author Series. In the ancient Mediterranean world, the sick and injured visited sites associated with healing deities in order to be cured. In Palestine, ritual cures were often sought at sites associated with water, and especially at the thermal-mineral springs. This talk will show how evidence from Hammat Gader and Hammat Tiberias indicates that Jews and Christians bathed in these springs alongside devotees of Asclepius, hoping that a divine healer would appear to them in a dream and heal them. Join guest speaker Dr. Megan Nutzman April 3rd at 4:00-5:30pm in Tisch Hall, Room 1014.

Additionally, Dr. Nutzman will be leading a discussion about her book in a different location for a small group of faculty and graduate students at 9:00am. If you are interested please contact Deborah Forger at dkforger@umich.edu to register as space is limited.

MPSDS JPSM Seminar Series
April 5, 2022
12:00 - 1:00 EST

Stephanie Morales is a second-year Ph.D. student at the University of Michigan's Program in Survey and Data Science. She holds a BA in Psychology and an MA in Sociology. She is interested in cross-cultural surveys, measurement error in data collection with racial/ethnic minorities, and adaptive survey design.

Assessing Cross-Cultural Comparability of Self-Rated Health and Its Conceptualization through Web Probing

Self-rated health (SRH) is a widely used question across different fields, as it is simple to administer yet has been shown to predict mortality. SRH asks respondents to rate their overall health typically using Likert-type response scales (i.e., excellent, very good, good, fair, poor). Although SRH is commonly used, few studies have examined its conceptualization from the respondents’ point of view and even less so for differences in its conceptualization across diverse populations. We aim to assess the comparability of SRH across different cultural groups by investigating the factors that respondents consider when responding to the SRH question. We included an open-ended probe asking what respondents thought when responding to SRH in web surveys conducted in five countries: Great Britain, Germany, the U.S., Spain, and Mexico. In the U.S., we targeted six racial/ethnic and linguistic groups: English-dominant Koreans, Korean-dominant Koreans, English-dominant Latinos, Spanish-dominant Latinos, non-Latino Black Americans, and non-Latino White Americans. One novelty of our study is allowing multiple attribute codes (e.g., health behaviors, illness) per respondent and tone (e.g., in the direction of positive or negative health or neutral) of the probing responses for each attribute, allowing us 1) to assess respondents’ thinking process holistically and 2) to examine whether and how respondents mix attributes. Our study compares the number of reported attributes and tone by cultural groups and integrates SRH responses in the analysis. This study aims to provide a deeper understanding of SRH by revealing the cognitive processes among diverse populations and is expected to shed light on its cross-cultural comparability.

Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science (MPSDS)
The University of Michigan Program in Survey Methodology was established in 2001 seeking to train future generations of survey and data scientists. In 2021, we changed our name to the Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science. Our curriculum is concerned with a broad set of data sources including survey data, but also including social media posts, sensor data, and administrative records, as well as analytic methods for working with these new data sources. And we bring to data science a focus on data quality — which is not at the center of traditional data science. The new name speaks to what we teach and work on at the intersection of social research and data. The program offers doctorate and master of science degrees and a certificate through the University of Michigan. The program's home is the Institute for Social Research, the world's largest academically-based social science research institute.

Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques (SISRT)
The mission of the Summer Institute is to provide rigorous and high quality graduate training in all phases of survey research. The program teaches state-of-the-art practice and theory in the design, implementation, and analysis of surveys. The Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques has presented courses on the sample survey since the summer of 1948, and has offered such courses every summer since. Graduate-level courses through the Program in Survey and Data Science are offered from June 5 through July 28 and available to enroll in as a Summer Scholar.

The Summer Institute uses the sample survey as the basic instrument for the scientific measurement of human activity. It presents sample survey methods in courses designed to meet the educational needs of those specializing in social and behavioral research such as professionals in business, public health, natural resources, law, medicine, nursing, social work, and many other domains of study.

Join us at ISR for a reception kicking off RCGD's fall Group Dynamics Seminar Series, "Psychological Diversity across the Globe," organized by Shinobu Kitayama and Catherine Thomas.

The reception will include brief presentations on the topic and the series.

Do our cultural contexts influence our psychology and behavior — and if so, how? In this RCGD series, we delve into the socio-ecological, histo-cultural, and economic dynamics shaping the diversity of selfhood and its associated cognitive, emotional, and motivational processes. We go beyond the traditional East and West focus to include a wide range of cultural groups. This series will elucidate the implications of psychological diversity across the globe for policies in international relations, politics, economics, business, immigration, and other relevant domains.

In person: ISR Thompson 1430

About the Group Dynamics Seminar Series:
The Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences. It has been running uninterruptedly since it was founded by Kurt Lewin in the 1920’s in Berlin. A very important feature of this seminar today is its interdisciplinary nature. In an interview with the French newspaper Le Monde in 1983, Palestinian poet Mamud Darwish called Palestine “the Andalus of the possible.” Taking inspiration from Darwish’s words, this talk asks: what has the memory of al-Andalus (Muslim Iberia) made possible for Palestinian writers and thinkers? Since the early twentieth century, several prominent Palestinian writers have turned to the memory of al-Andalus to reflect on the political plight of their homeland, to decry occupation and cultural erasure, and to imagine a future for Palestine. Drawing on examples from this long tradition of Palestinian writing about al-Andalus, this talk maps the intersection of two diasporic imaginaries that have crisscrossed the Mediterranean: the Andalusi imaginary and the Palestinian one.

In the past three decades, cultural psychologists have shown how culture shapes cognitive, emotional, and motivational processes, making it a crucial factor in understanding human behavior. While much of this work has focused on comparing Western European and East Asian heritages, there is a growing need to empirically examine other cultures and uncover new insights into how culture influences the mind. In this talk, I will examine the influence of ecology and geography on human activity, leading to the formation of organized systems of cultural practices and meanings known as "ecocultural complexes." These complexes have given rise to diverse cultural zones we observe today. Outside of the modern West, most cultural zones emphasize an interdependent view of the self. Notably, however, non-Western cultural zones display significant variability. I will explore several non-Western cultural zones, such as Arab, East Asian, Latin American, and South Asian zones, and examine how these cultures may have played a substantial role in shaping the contemporary Western cultural zone. The Western cultural zone, in contrast to non-Western zones, prioritizes the self’s independence over interdependence. By going beyond the conventional Western-East Asian comparison, this talk aims to broaden our understanding of the impact of culture on cognition, emotions, motivation, and behavior. It highlights the significance of exploring diverse cultural zones to gain deeper insights into the intricate relationship between culture and the human mind.

Shakti: 50th Anniversary Tour
Feat. John McLaughlin, Zakir Hussain, & Shankar Mahadevan
with very special guest Béla Fleck

Following the Summer 2023 release of This Moment – their first new studio album in 46 years – revolutionary ensemble Shakti will continue to discover and explore the musical common ground bridging East and West on an exclusive US tour marking the 50th anniversary since their first concerts.

Born in the mid-1970s out of the deep artistic and spiritual connection bonding British guitarist John McLaughlin and Indian tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain, Shakti’s cross-cultural musical conversation dissolved boundaries with uncommon passion, grace, and dexterity, awakening subsequent generations of musicians to the possibilities of new creative approaches in the process. The unprecedented transcontinental collaboration forged the template for what is often called “world music.” Together they honed an ecstatic new fusion, blazing uncharted pathways and demonstrating the potential of such global composites to generations of musicians and fans around the world.

Alongside McLaughlin and Hussain, today’s Shakti features vocalist Shankar Mahadevan, violinist Ganesh Rajagopalan, and percussionist Selvaganesh Vinayakram (son of original Shakti ghatam player T.H. “Vikku” Vinayakram). Joining Shakti will be another performer dedicated to intermingling and transcending genres: banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck, who will open the performances with a solo set.

RCGD Fall Seminar Series: Psychological Diversity across the Globe (Jackson G. Lu) (September 25, 2023 3:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/109287 109287-21821351@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, September 25, 2023 3:30pm

In the US, Asians are commonly viewed as the “model minority” in business academia. Some inspiring initiatives intended to help ethnic minorities to attain tenure and deanship exclude Asians from participating, perhaps because Asians are assumed to be already successful. Jackson G. Lu challenges this assumption by revealing a “Bamboo Ceiling” in tenure, full professorship, and deanship in US business schools. He analyzes a 10-year panel of tenure-track professors and deans at top-50 US business schools. Although Asians appear well represented at first glance, a stark contrast emerges once one distinguishes between East Asians (e.g., ethnic Chinese) and South Asians (e.g., ethnic Indians): Among all ethnicities, East Asian faculty are proportionally the least likely to be tenured professors, full professors, and deans, whereas South Asian faculty are the most likely. Moreover, East Asians tend to be employed by lower-ranked schools. To understand these puzzling patterns, Lu constructs large-scale datasets to test potential contributing factors, including (a) faculty recruitment bar, (b) research productivity, (c) research impact, (d) teaching evaluations, (e) invited seminar talks, (f) social media activities, and (g) social media mentions. As one of the largest endeavors to examine ethnic disparities in academia, this research extends the diversity, equity, and inclusion literature and the “leaky pipeline” literature by uncovering East Asian faculty’s neglected challenges in US business schools.

Jackson G. Lu is the Sloan School Career Development Associate Professor in Work and Organization Studies at the MIT Sloan School of Management. He received his PhD from Columbia Business School. Jackson studies culture and globalization through two distinctive research streams. His first research stream examines the “Bamboo Ceiling” experienced by Asians despite their educational and economic achievements in the United States. His second research stream elucidates how multicultural experiences (e.g., working abroad, intercultural friendships) shape key organizational outcomes, including leadership, creativity, and ethics.

Jackson has published in top general science journals (Nature Human Behaviour, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences), management journals (Journal of Applied Psychology, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Organization Science), and psychology journals (Annual Review of Psychology, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Psychological Science). His research has been featured in over 300 media outlets (e.g., BBC, The Economist, The Financial Times, Harvard Business Review, NPR, The Boston Globe, The New York Times, The Washington Post). He has received prestigious awards and honors, including World’s 40 Best Business School Professors Under 40, 30 Thinkers to Watch, NLS Rising Star Award from the Academy of Management, Rising Star Award from the Association for Psychological Science, SAGE Early Career Trajectory Award from the Society for Personality and Social Psychology, Early Career Award from the International Association for Conflict Management, New Investigator Award from the Behavioral Science & Policy Association, and the Best Senior Editor Award from Management and Organization Review.

Iranian women have been protagonists in revolutionary movements from the Constitutional Revolution (1905) to the Iranian Revolution (1979), the civil rights movements of 2009 (Green Movement), and more recently the 2022 Woman, Life, and Freedom Movement. They have been fighting for voting rights, gender and ethnic equality, freedom of assembly and of expression as well as the right to a dignified life. Using the media of the arts, the three panelists will discuss the visual and performative language of activism to think about the role of gender and the visual arts in revolutionary Iran.

About the panelists:

As part of her residency at the Institute for the Humanities, Orkideh Torabi is heading to the U-M Dearborn campus. In this talk, she will delve into the transition of her focus from gender-segregated spaces to the exploration of power dynamics and governance while taking a broader perspective on society. She will focus on two paintings that embody this societal paradox and explore how her art challenges conventional notions of femininity, power, and identity, achieved by blending Persian miniature art with contemporary imagery.

The talk will be followed by a strolling reception and the opportunity to talk to the artist and view her work.

About Orkideh Torabi:
Orkideh Torabi, a native of Tehran, Iran, began her artistic journey in her hometown. She obtained an MFA in graphic design and illustration from the University of Art in Tehran and served as a faculty member there for seven years. Eager to explore new horizons, Torabi made the bold decision to relocate to the United States, driven by her passion to advance her artistic career. She completed her second MFA in 2016 at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Presently, Torabi resides and works in Brooklyn, New York, channeling her artistic vision and enriching the cultural landscape of her new home.

Through her vibrant and intricate paintings, Torabi challenges traditional notions of femininity, power dynamics, and identity. Her unique artistic style blends elements of Persian miniature painting with contemporary imagery, blurring the boundaries between the past and the present.

In her artistic practice, she embraces the role of a storyteller, recognizing the integral role that narration plays in her paintings. Within her work, she has crafted a diverse array of whimsical characters, each with their own unique backstory and personality. For her, the canvas becomes a stage, and her paintings take on the essence of a captivating play or theatrical scene, with these characters serving as the ensemble cast, each playing their distinct role.

*Orkideh Torabi is the 2023 Jean Yokes Woodhead Visting Fellow at the Institute for the Humanities. This event is part of the LSA's fall 2023 Arts & Resistance theme semester.*

*Many thanks to the following units at UM- Dearborn for their support of this event: Arabic Studies, Art History, Center for Arab American Studies, Honors Program, the Art Collections and Exhibitions Department/ Stamelos Gallery Center, Middle East Studies, Women and Gender Studies.*

Location: Institute For Social Research
Organized By: Research Center for Group Dynamics (RCGD)

In this talk, Üskül will present recent findings pointing to a distinct emphasis on several forms of independence (relative intensity of disengaging [vs. engaging] emotions, happiness based on disengaging [vs. engaging] emotions, dispositional [vs. situational] attribution style, self-construal as different from others, self-directed, self-reliant, self-expressive, and consistent) and interdependence (closeness to in-group [vs. out-group] members, self-construal as connected and committed to close others) in the Mediterranean region compared to more commonly studied East Asian and Anglo-Western cultural groups. She discusses this unique pattern in light of the importance of “honor” values in Mediterranean societies, which require individuals to develop and protect a sense of their personal self-worth and their social reputation, through assertiveness, competitiveness, and retaliation in the face of threats. These findings extend previous insights into patterns of cultural orientation beyond commonly examined East–West comparisons to an understudied world region. In addition, she will share a within-region analysis of self-construal social orientation, and cognitive style to examine the role of ethnic, linguistic, national, religious and socio-ecological factors in similarities and differences between subregional groups.

Üskül is a social and cultural psychologist interested in the role of cultural and socio-ecological context in self-related, interpersonal and social cognitive processes. She completed her degrees at Bogazici University in Istanbul, Turkey (BA), Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, the Netherlands (MA), and York University, Toronto, Canada (PhD) and held a SSHRC-funded Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor between 2004-06. She held academic positions at the University of Essex, Queen’s University Belfast, and University of Kent before joining the University of Sussex in 2022. Her past research on socio-economic basis of interdependence, cultural conceptions of honor, and culture and health behavior change received funding from the British Academy, the US National Science Foundation, the Economic and Social Research Council, the Leverhulme Trust, and Japanese Society of the Promotion of Science, among others. Her current comparative research on the role of honor in social interactional processes is funded by a European Research Council Consolidator Grant (www.honorlogic.org). She is Co-Chief Editor of the European Review of Social Psychology and the President of the Psychology Section of the British Science Association.

Overview: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming every aspect of our society and our lives. However, just like any emerging technology, AI’s impact varies greatly for different demographic groups, in different geographic regions, and is shaped by social conventions, culture, religion, economic realities, among many other factors. We invite everyone who is interested in understanding the impact of AI to join Marina Alsahawneh and Merve Hickok for a discussion of the impact of AI on women in the US and the Middle East. They will discuss gender biases in AI algorithms, opportunities and gender inequity in the AI-enabled workforce, and cyber-based violence against women. They will discuss how these intersect with the political, social, cultural, economic and religious features of different geographic regions.

Speakers:
Marina Alsahawneh, Gender and Inclusion Officer at Jordan Open Source Association

Merve Hickok, Responsible Data & AI Advisor, Michigan Institute for Data Science

Moderator:
Jing Liu, Executive Director, Michigan Institute for Data Science

Join us in the Modern Languages Building, Lec Room 1 (1220), for the Fall 2023 Ukrainian Film Series!

We will be showing wonderful Ukrainian films; light snacks will be available. Our October featured film is Mavka, a remarkable animation based on the work of Lesya Ukrainka "Lisova pisnya (Forest Song)."

The November featured film, Carol of the Bells is adapted from a popular and loved Ukrainian folk melody. The peaceful and neighborly existence of three families, Polish, Ukrainian, and Jewish, sharing a large house in the years preceding and post-war, is shattered. It's beautiful in its small details of food and cutlery, children's games, and objects of the everyday life of the city of Stanislaviv.

Thank you to our generous event co-sponsor, Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia (WCEE). If you have questions or accommodation needs, please contact the Slavic Department at slavic@umich.edu.

Location: Institute For Social Research
Organized By: Research Center for Group Dynamics (RCGD)

The rice theory is the idea traditional rice farming’s labor and irrigation demands made rice-farming cultures more interdependent cultures. Thomas Talhelm will present data showing that northern and southern China have cultural differences that fall along the historical borders of rice and wheat. And since most of East Asia was built on rice farming, rice could help explain larger East-West cultural differences. In this talk, he’ll show new data on manspreading around the world. He and his team coded how much space 7,000 people were taking up in Starbucks in nine countries. He will also build from the cartoonish kindergarten version of the rice theory (rice = collectivism!) to a slightly more realistic undergrad version. The undergrad version of the theory can explain puzzles like why China’s wheat-farming north is still so different from wheat-farming Western Europe and why China’s most fertile farming regions were the last to start farming.

Thomas Talhelm is an Associate Professor of Behavioral Science at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He researches the agricultural roots of cultural differences and how people (researchers!) get collectivism wrong. Thomas has lived in China for seven years as a Princeton in Asia Fellow, a freelance journalist, and a Fulbright scholar. When he should have been writing his dissertation, he founded a social enterprise called Smart Air, which makes low-cost, open-data-backed air purifiers to help people in China and India protect themselves from air pollution.

DruidO’Casey: The Plough and the Stars (October 18, 2023 7:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/109615 109615-21822406@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, October 18, 2023 7:30am
Location: Power Center for the Performing Arts
Organized By: University Musical Society (UMS)

Sean O’Casey’s The Plough and the Stars is a gripping portrayal of the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin, Ireland, a six-day conflict led by Irish Republicans who were attempting to establish an independent Ireland while the British were preoccupied by World War I. Set in a tenement house, the story follows the lives of ordinary citizens who are caught up in the tumultuous events of the rebellion. The tenement’s residents grapple with their own loyalties and beliefs as the rebellion unfolds, with their romanticized ideals clashing with the harsh realities of war.

Through vivid dialogue and dramatic events, O’Casey masterfully portrays their struggles, dreams, and disillusionment in the face of political upheaval, challenging romanticized notions of heroism while highlighting the often-unseen sacrifices made by ordinary individuals. Director Garry Hynes “deliver[s] a Plough that leaves room for all of the fun to be had…while shifting elegantly into an expressionistic mode. A significant achievement by Hynes and her superb ensemble.” (The Irish Examiner)

This performance is part of Seán O’Casey’s Dublin Trilogy, which includes The Plough and the Stars, The Shadow of a Gunman, and Juno and the Paycock. Get tickets to all three performances and save.

In The Shadow of a Gunman, Sean O’Casey explores the Irish War of Independence (1920-21). Set in a tenement house in Dublin, the story centers around the character of Donal Davoren, a struggling poet mistaken for an Irish Republican Army gunman by his neighbors, who approach him with a mixture of fear and intrigue. As the rumor of Davoren’s affiliation spreads, he finds himself caught between his desire to maintain his romantic image as a poet and the harsh reality of being seen as a revolutionary. The tension escalates when an actual IRA gunman arrives, forcing Davoren to confront the consequences of his assumed identity.

“O’Casey’s dramatic toolbag is stuffed with the conventions of his time: comic double acts, maudlin heroines, tragic twists, malaproprisms, and melodrama” (The Irish Examiner) as he highlights the profound impact of political unrest on ordinary lives.

The Irish Civil War of 1922-23 provides a backdrop of political unrest and social upheaval that amplifies the struggles of the working-class characters in Sean O’Casey’s Juno and the Paycock. The Boyle family lives in squalor, with Captain Jack’s laziness and alcoholism contributing to their financial struggles while his wife Juno works tirelessly to provide for the family. When the family receives news of an unexpected inheritance, their hopes rise and they dream of a better life. However, their newfound fortune soon proves illusory, and their lives become entangled in a web of betrayal, deceit, and tragedy.

With humor and tragedy, O’Casey depicts the harsh realities of life in a war-torn society and the impact of ideological divides within a single family. Of the first performances of DruidO’Casey in Galway, Ireland in July, The Arts Review observed, “To see one of O’Casey’s classics is to be astonished at the manner in which he courageously articulated, challenged, and shared an emerging Ireland. To see all three together is to go deeper and ask how far have we traveled, or failed to? Many of the questions raised by O’Casey prov[e] prescient, and alas, still relevant.”

This performance is part of Seán O’Casey’s Dublin Trilogy, which includes The Plough and the Stars, The Shadow of a Gunman, and Juno and the Paycock. Get tickets to all three performances and save.

A century ago, Ireland was reborn in the fires of rebellion and war. The playwright Sean O’Casey bore witness to these seismic events and dramatized them as the Dublin Trilogy, three great works of Irish theater full of history, humanity, and humor, all written in the immediate aftermath of the tumultuous period.

Druid will weave O’Casey’s three plays into an epic theatrical event of conflict, national identity, and the human toll of war: DruidO’Casey. The three plays will be presented in only two US cities — New York and Ann Arbor.

Directed by Tony Award winner Garry Hynes, a single company of 18 actors will perform all three plays, drawing parallels between an Irish past and an international present. Each play will be presented twice in Ann Arbor, with the opportunity to view each work individually, across the week, or as a single immersive experience. Experience one play, or experience them all!

This performance is part of Seán O’Casey’s Dublin Trilogy, which includes The Plough and the Stars, The Shadow of a Gunman, and Juno and the Paycock. Get tickets to all three performances and save.

Carlos Miguel Prieto, celebrated as a rising star both domestically and abroad, was named 2019 Conductor of the Year by Musical America and is the foremost Mexican conductor of his generation. He serves as artistic director of México City’s Minería Symphony, which was founded in the 1970s and is widely regarded as the leading musical institution in México — one that regularly supports and programs Mexican composers. Housed at the Academia de Música del Palacio de Minería, the name honors the period from the 18th century when mining was one of the region’s most important economic activities.

Joining the Minería Symphony in their first Ann Arbor performance is Latin Grammy Award-winning pianist/composer Gabriela Montero, a frequent Prieto collaborator. Montero, known for her passionate virtuosity and brilliant improvisation, performs her first piano concerto, a soulful work showing the complexities of South American life. “Montero’s playing has everything: crackling rhythmic brio, subtle shadings, steely power in climactic moments, soulful lyricism in the ruminative passages and, best of all, unsentimental expressivity.” (The New York Times)

The concert includes works by two Mexican composers: Carlos Chávez (1899- 1978), an ethnomusicologist whose Sinfonía India reflects the harmonies, rhythms, melodies, and instruments of the Indian cultures of Mexico, and Silvestre Revueltas, whose concert suite La noche de los mayas depicts Mexico’s preColumbian heritage and is drawn from his highly-regarded 1939 film score.

In a new book, A Theory of Everyone: Who We Are, How We Got Here, and Where We’re Going, Michael Muthukrishna argues that the psychological and behavioral sciences are in the midst of a scientific revolution on the scale of Newtonian and Einsteinian physics, the periodic table, and Darwinian evolution. It is a revolution moving us from alchemy to chemistry and one that is bringing order to chaos and laying the path from science to technology – in this case, policy applications. This emerging science is grounded in a formal general theory that recognizes that our psychology and behavior are governed by millions of years of genetic evolution, our genetic inheritance as an African ape; thousands of years of cultural evolution, our cultural inheritance a product of path dependencies and cultural adaptations in the various ecologies we’ve thrived in across the planet; and a short lifetime of experience, tuning these other two lines of informational inheritance. This revolution has 3 parts: (1) general and specific, ultimate and proximate formal theories that make falsifiable predictions for universal and culturally specific psychology and behavior; (2) new tools for measuring and analyzing psychology and culture through large datasets, field and lab experiments; (3) real world tests using policy interventions, guided by the principle that if your theories don’t work in the real world, they don’t work at all.

Michael Muthukrishna is Associate Professor of Economic Psychology and Affiliate in Developmental Economics and in Data Science at the London School of Economics (LSE), Technical Director of the Database of Religious History, and CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholar at the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) program for Boundaries, Membership, and Belonging. His research focuses on human biological and cultural evolution and how the “theory of human behavior” that emerges from this research can be used to improve innovation, reduce corruption, and increase cross-cultural cooperation. His work has been featured in a variety of news outlets including CNN, BBC, Wall Street Journal, The Economist, The Guardian, The Telegraph, The Times, Scientific American, Nature News, and Science News. He advises both governments and organizations and has won several awards for his research. Michael’s research is informed by his educational background in engineering and psychology, with graduate training in evolutionary biology, economics, and statistics, and his personal background living in Sri Lanka, Botswana, Papua New Guinea, Australia, Canada, United States, and the United Kingdom. He is the author of “A Theory of Everyone: Who We Are, How We Got Here, and Where We’re Going”.

Since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the world has become more attuned to the incredible bravery, resilience, and determination of the Ukrainian people. The folk-punk quartet DakhaBrakha embraces and reflects the fundamental elements of sound and soul, creating a world of unexpected new music. The group’s name is original, outstanding, and authentic at the same time, meaning “give/take” in the old Ukrainian language and signaling the group’s unique brand of musical “ethno-chaos.”

Created in 2004 by an avant-garde theater director, their shows include scenic effects, traditional instrumentation, and an astonishingly powerful and uncompromising vocal range that creates an exuberant, transnational sound rooted in Ukrainian culture. “Musically, the whole experience is a riotous explosion of color and reinvention. The classic Eastern European folk base is there, with belting, complex, and hypnotic harmonies.” (Hackney Citizen, UK)

The fourth year of the Vietnam War, 1969 was the deadliest for Americans. It was also the year those Americans had the North Vietnamese on the ropes. Hanoi was about to ask for terms when President Richard Nixon called first, prompting them not to give up. This year’s Vietnam Panel features three Veterans who were in the air and on the ground of the Mekong Delta in 1969. All saw action and acts of humanity they have never forgotten and came home to long and successful civilian careers. What do they think today of the first war America thought it had lost?

In its attempt to understand, explain, and predict human behavior, mainstream psychology has notoriously understudied populations in the global south. Africans currently make up 16% of the world’s population and are projected to comprise 25% of the world’s population by 2050 and 40% by 2100, according to UN projections. By 2100, half of all babies in the world will be born in Africa. Investing in research efforts in this population will advance psychology’s broader goals of human progress and understanding.

Emotions are fundamental to the human experience, and wellbeing is important to understanding the human condition and the social influences that impact individual experience. Emotion experiences have been understudied in African contexts. Using data from 2 African countries and the United States, this presentation will explore culturally-shaped patterns of emotion expression, experience, and regulation; cultural emotion norms; and cultural understandings of wellbeing.

Location: Modern Languages Building
Organized By: Slavic Languages & Literatures

In the 1970s, Fereydoun Farrokhzad was a significant cultural icon, a sex symbol, and a chart-topping pop singer whose music and television programs were heard and viewed by millions of Iranians. A decade later, living in political exile in Germany, he still performed to sold-out audiences in Europe. That changed on August 7, 1992, when he was found brutally murdered in his apartment in Bonn. Neighbors said his dogs had been barking for two nights.

The murder, still unsolved, serves as the starting point for this new work by British-Iranian theater maker Javaad Alipoor, whose The Believers Are But Brothers was featured in the 2020 No Safety Net theater festival. Selected as one of The Guardian’s Top Theatre Shows of 2022, Things Hidden “gleefully mashes up genres, smashing together the quiet authority of the murder mystery podcast, the intimacy of autobiographical storytelling, and the visual spectacle of multimedia performance — while simultaneously deconstructing each of these forms.” (The Guardian)

With his public debut at the age of 5 and a performance of the Mendelssohn Concerto at age 7, Vengerov’s career has been marked by dozens of awards, honors, and recordings. Born in Siberia to two musicians, he studied throughout Europe before moving to Israel as a teenager.

RCGD Fall Seminar Series: Psychological Diversity across the Globe (Catherine Thomas) (December 4, 2023 3:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/109965 109965-21823481@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, December 4, 2023 3:30pm
Location: Institute For Social Research
Organized By: Research Center for Group Dynamics (RCGD)

Culturally Wise Interventions and Their Effects on Psychosocial and Economic Well-Being

People are enculturated actors, shaped by their sociocultural and socioecological contexts. A vast empirical literature has documented that, in Global North contexts that afford greater choice and material abundance, selves are more independent–prioritizing personal interests and autonomy in their preferences and behavior. However, the social psychological literature suffers from glaring gaps in low resource Global South contexts where selves are likely higher in interdependence–prioritizing relationships, roles and obligations in their preferences and behavior (Thomas & Markus, 2023). An agenda on ‘culturally wise’ interventions seeks to fill this gap by experimentally comparing different culturally grounded approaches across diverse sociocultural contexts. Building on theoretical principles of wise interventions (Walton & Wilson, 2018) and culture match (Stephens et al., 2012), culturally wise interventions are attuned to how culturally specific models of self, motivation, and relationality can exert powerful effects on meaning making and behavior. Through experimental evaluations of such intervention approaches in understudied contexts, this research agenda seeks to advance a more comprehensive account of human behavior as well as strategies for promoting psychosocial and economic well-being around the globe. This talk will focus on how culturally wise approaches in sub-Saharan Africa can be leveraged to mitigate poverty and inequality.

Catherine Thomas of the Research Center for Group Dynamics and the University of Michigan, co-organizer of the Group Dynamics Fall 2023 Seminar Series with Shinobu Kitayama, closes the series.

Group Dynamics Fall 2023 Seminar Series: Psychological Diversity across the Globe

Organized by Shinobu Kitayama and Catherine Thomas
As permissions allow, seminars from this series are later posted to ISR's YouTube playlist.

In person: ISR Thompson 1430
The series runs Mondays from 3:30 to 5.

About the Group Dynamics Seminar Series

The Group Dynamics Seminar series is considered one of the longest running seminar series in the social sciences. It has been running uninterruptedly since it was founded by Kurt Lewin in the 1920’s in Berlin. A very important feature of this seminar today is its interdisciplinary nature. Recent seminars have included discussions in “Law and Psychology,” “Racism and Discrimination,” “Social Media,” and “Political Polarization.” The series is offered by the Research Center for Group Dynamics (RCGD), at the Institute for Social Research.

Location: Hill Auditorium
Organized By: University Musical Society (UMS)

This collaboration between UMS and the U-M School of Music, Theatre & Dance features a new commission and world première by American composer Nkeiru Okoye. When the Caged Bird Sings fuses elements of oratorio, theater, and opera in a multi-movement musical ceremony of sorts, which Okoye describes as “a gathering” that invokes the ritual of the concert experience as a ritual of community.

Drawing inspiration from the Black church, it celebrates the spirit of rising above expectations and transforming adversity into triumph. Partly in tribute to the activist and poet laureate Maya Angelou, the work celebrates the transformative ability of Black women, commemorating those who have paved a path for future generations in many fields of human endeavor.

Presented in collaboration with the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance.

Commissioned by the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance as part of its Michigan Orchestra Repertoire for Equity initiative.

This is a file about the black cardiac pioneer Vivien Thomas (1910–1985) and his complex and volatile partnership with white surgeon Alfred Blalock (1899–1964), the "Blue Baby doctor" who pioneered modern heart surgery.
It tells the story of the 34-year partnership that begins in Depression Era Nashville in 1930 when Blalock (Alan Rickman) hires Thomas (Mos Def) as an assistant at his Vanderbilt University lab, expecting him to perform janitorial work. But Thomas' remarkable manual dexterity and intellectual acumen confound Blalock's expectations, and Thomas rapidly becomes indispensable as a research partner to Blalock in his forays into heart surgery.
Vivien Thomas was a carpenter that wanted to be a doctor, unable to attend college he works for a real doctor as a janitor. Realizing what this young man is capable of the doctor gives him real tasks and as a team they go to conquer what other people though impossible.

Buddhist Perspectives on Grief and Language: (February 16, 2024 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/117682 117682-21839831@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 16, 2024 3:00pm
Location: 202 S. Thayer
Organized By: Asian Languages and Cultures

Join us for an intimate dialogue between Chenxing Han and Buddhist studies scholar Dr. Lang Chen about religious perspectives on grief, culturally attuned care for the dying, and the literary entanglements of translation in Asian and Asian American contexts. The conversation will be grounded in Chenxing’s recent book, *one long listening: a memoir of grief, friendship, and spiritual care* (North Atlantic Books, 2023), and will also touch on May We Gather, a national Buddhist memorial of resilience, recovery, and repair.

Chenxing Han is the author of *Be the Refuge: Raising the Voices of Asian American Buddhists*; *one long listening: a memoir of grief, friendship, and spiritual care*; and numerous articles and book chapters for both academic and mainstream audiences. She is a frequent speaker and workshop leader at schools, universities, and Buddhist communities across the nation, and currently serves as the Khyentse Visitor in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Michigan.

Lang Chen received her Ph.D. in Buddhist Studies from Yale University in 2015 and her Master of Theological Studies from Harvard Divinity School in 2006. Her research focused on Chinese literati’s creative use of Buddhism for literary innovation as well as spiritual liberation from the early modern period (16–17th century) onwards. She also studied the idea of “happiness” from Chinese and Buddhist perspectives. Lang is currently enrolled in the Master of Social Work program at the University of Michigan and working as an intern therapist at the Counseling and Psychological Services of the university. Martha Graham Dance Company (February 17, 2024 7:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/109637 109637-21822438@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, February 17, 2024 7:30pm
Location: Power Center for the Performing Arts
Organized By: University Musical Society (UMS)

As the company approaches its 100th anniversary, it continues to exemplify its founder’s timeless and uniquely American style of dance, one that has influenced generations of artists and continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

Martha Graham is recognized as a primal artistic force of the 20th century, alongside Pablo Picasso, Virginia Woolf, Igor Stravinsky, and Frank Lloyd Wright. Graham radically expanded the dance vocabulary, rooting it in social, psychological, and sexual ideas and forever altering the scope of the art form. These performances will include a new work choreographed by Jamar Roberts, resident choreographer for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and set to music by Rhiannon Giddens. The dance will be paired with Agnes de Mille’s 1942 classic Rodeo; its iconic score by Aaron Copland has been reorchestrated for a bluegrass ensemble, offering an expanded view of our cultural history and the influence of Black artists on American music and dance forms. Martha Graham’s final complete work, Maple Leaf Rag, rounds out the program.

PROGRAM
Rodeo — The Courting at Burnt Ranch (Choreography by Agnes de Mille / Music by Aaron Copland in a new bluegrass arrangement by Gabe Witcher)
New Work (Jamar Roberts / Rhiannon Giddens)

Speaker: Julián Gutiérrez Albilla, Professor of Spanish and Portuguese, Gender Studies and Comparative Literature at University of Souther California. His interests include Spanish and Latin American Cinema, Visual Culture, Gender Studies, Queer Theory, Psychoanalysis, Trauma and Memory. Among his books are Aesthetics, Ethics, and Trauma in the Cinema of Pedro Almodovar (2017) and Queering Buñuel: Sexual Dissidence and Psychoanalysis in his Mexican and Spanish Cinema (2008).

The aim of this paper is twofold. On the one hand, this talk will reflect on Bracha L. Ettinger´s matrixial psychoanalysis´ explicit and implicit contribution to feminist and queer theory, and transgender studies by focusing on the representation and creation of affective relationships and border spaces of co-emergence and co-affection, thus creating and allegorizing trans-subjective encounters between artistic practices and spectators. This talk will present some of the aesthetic, ethical, and political implications underpinning Ettingerian psychoanalysis by emphasizing the dialogue and the productive tensions between Ettinger’s theoretical propositions and one of her most important interlocutors, namely Lacan. On the other hand, this paper focuses on finitude, mourning, and trans-subjectivity to offer a historical and theoretical account of how Spanish and Latin American visual artists and filmmakers have reflected, responded to, or remembered the AIDS epidemic since the 1980s. Drawing on Ettinger’s matrixial psychoanalysis, my talk conceives queer art and cinema of the 1980s and 1990s as a trans-subjective encounter between the spectator and the traces of individual and collective trauma that moves us beyond our individual and finite limits of ego, identity, and body. Emphasizing the transformative aesthetic, ethical, and political potential of this kind of trans-subjective mourning, my paper uses Ettinger’s term “wit(h)ness”—that is, bearing witness to and with the other—to describe how Spanish and Latin American queer artists and filmmakers of the 1980s and ‘90s used their art and cinema to engage audiences in a trans-subjective processing of the traumas associated with the loss, illness, and mortality exposed by the AIDS virus, while simultaneously gesturing towards an aesthetic, ethical, and political transformation in the way that individuals relate to each other.
