Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

The Richard Pohrt Jr. Collection of Native American Photography contains approximately 1,470 photographs related to Native Americans and Native American history taken mainly between 1860 and 1920 by more than 150 photographers. The majority of photographs are individual and group portraits of people from tribes west of the Mississippi, with the Apache, Cheyenne, Crow, and Lakota/Dakota being particularly well represented.

The collection contains both studio and outdoor photographs and reflects the dramatic upheavals in Native American life that occurred as a result of the expansion of the United States of America. Our speaker, Jakob Dopp, will discuss some of the challenges encountered while cataloging this collection (such as discovering misidentifications and other errors in certain photographs) as well as additional aspects of the project, including collaboration with Native American Tribal authorities and other consultants about how to appropriately deal with culturally sensitive materials and cultural dissemination.

This class meets on Thursday, January 20.

Pre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the study group will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

This virtual panel, hosted by the U-M Center for World Performance Studies, seeks to explore issues surrounding musical repatriation, primarily of recordings from archive, to the communities from which they were initially recorded or collected. Drawing on their diverse experiences as ethnographers, curators and archivists, panelists will discuss ethical considerations of “return,” and strategies for providing reconnection and Indigenous control and access to cultural materials. The conversation will highlight questions of ownership of and access to musical heritage, and issues involving memory, identity, history, power, agency, research, scholarship, preservation, performance, distribution, legitimacy, commodification, curation, decoloniality, and sustainability.

Dr. Robin R.R. Gray (Ph.D., University of Massachusetts Amherst, 2015) is Ts’msyen and Mikisew Cree, and an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Toronto Mississauga. Prior to joining our faculty, Dr. Gray held a 2-year University of California President’s Postdoctoral Fellowship in the History Department at the University of California Santa Cruz. Her research centers primarily on the politics of Indigeneity in settler colonial contexts such as Canada, USA, New Zealand and Australia. As a socio-cultural anthropologist and Indigenous studies scholar, Dr. Gray employs critical ethnographic, community-based, Indigenous and intersectional methodologies in the study and presentation of knowledge, power, culture and society.

Managing Melt: Ice, Refrigeration, and Hawaiian Body Politics
Hiʻilei Julia Kawehipuaakahaopulani Hobart, UT Austin – Anthropology

Monday, Feb 21: Open Talks 12-1pm, Grad Workshops 1-3pm
Zoom: https://umich.zoom.us/j/95385019774?pwd=N0I1THZGYlQwZi9UT2Q5dFlXSEttdz09

Abstract:
Nearly everything Hawaiʻi residents eat is imported, despite its history of agricultural abundance, and real estate development has encroached on arable farmlands such that a mere 11.6% of food is locally grown. Not only is Hawaiʻi dependent upon imported food, but the added energy costs built-in for maintaining perishables makes its groceries the most expensive in the United States. In this way, cold chain logics offer one way to trace the role that temperature plays in organizing bodies in within the tropics. Examining how freezing and refrigeration technologies function as a critical node of Hawaiʻi’s food system as a structure of settler colonialism, this talk considers what the promises and limits of thermal management might be for decolonial struggles over land and sovereignty. In doing so, Hiʻilei Julia Kawehipuaakahaopulani Hobart asks: how does ‘artificial’ ice and refrigeration constrain the conditions of possibility within movements that call for de-occupation, demilitarization, and the dismantling of the settler state? In what ways does it support activist and movement spaces? And, lastly, what place does refrigeration have within Indigenous futures that aim to move beyond capitalism, settler colonialism, and imperialism, when coldness has played such an infrastructural role in these political systems of oppression?

Thresholds: Regulating Risk and Water Contamination in Diné Communities
Teresa Montoya, University of Chicago

Monday, Mar. 7, The Open Talks will be held noon to 1pm, and the Grad Workshops will be held 1 to 3pm. All parts via Zoom.

Abstract:
On July 16, 1979, one of the uranium mill tailings disposal ponds at the United Nuclear Corporation facility near Church Rock, NM failed. The ruptured mill earth dam released approximately 1100 tons of radioactive solid mill waste and 95 million gallons of acidic mine water into the streams and watersheds of nearby Diné (Navajo) communities. This disaster remains the largest singular release of radioactive material in U.S. history. In the spill’s aftermath—decades later and several miles downstream—I have worked alongside Diné grassroots coalitions on the Navajo Nation in their efforts to confront various forms of water contamination from this toxic disaster. Drawing upon ethnographic and archival material, I explore the various regulatory frameworks through which radioactive exposure is legible and by extension, the legal and political avenues that are made possible or denied. Through these activities, I analyze discourses of risk management, regulatory jurisdiction, and chronic exposure by several state agencies and public officials in their response to community concerns of unsafe water. In doing so, I theorize the arbitrary thresholds of toxicity within larger racialized debates over tribal sovereignty, public health disparity, and environmental justice for Diné communities today.

In this talk, Dr. Marek-Martinez will discuss her research and perspectives on decolonization and Indigenization of archaeological research. Over the past 20 years, she has worked within, by, and for her Dine' (Navajo) communities, however, this work is in service of all Indigenous peoples. Dr. Marek-Martinez will share her research, particularly in the area of the refusal of colonialism using Indigenous archaeological approaches in the creation of tribally specific archaeological approaches. The work that she has completed for her People resulted in a Nihooka Dine’e bila’ ashdla’ii archaeology, or an archaeology of the Five Finger Earth Surface People, a ceremonial name for the Navajo People. Dr. Marek-Martine will use her work with the Navajo Nation to discuss the ways that colonial based archaeology has impacted Navajo communities and the subsequent attempts at reclamation of deep history for the Navajo people. Finally, she will also give an overview of the colonial roots of archaeology that have created the space necessary for an Indigenized and decolonized archaeology.

Abstract:
In this presentation a team of researchers from the University of Michigan and the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians Archive and Records Department discuss the land and schooling of the Anishinaabek—the Three Fires of the Odawa, Ojibwe, and Potawatomi. Of particular focus is the spread of Euro-American schooling among the Anishinaabek from the early 1800s through 1950. We trace the establishment of schools in the early 1800s and the growth of literacy and school attainment from the 1850s through 1940. In addition to considering schooling levels and trends of the Anishinaabek at the national level, we examine state differences, and focus on one particular group, the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians, who today live in Waganakising—the Land of the Crooked Tree—located in the northwest portion of the lower peninsula of Michigan.

Modern Native Storytelling through Performance Poetry explores the fascinating world of a dynamic team of indigenous youth writers from the Santa Fe Indian School (SFIS) in New Mexico. Led by teacher and poet Timothy P. McLaughlin, the SFIS Spoken Word Program empowers its student members to create and perform original poems centered in Native philosophies.

Over an eight-year history, the exquisite artistry of this ever-evolving team has been highly recognized through numerous awards, a bevy of media appearances including in The New York Times and on The PBS News Hour, and performance tours throughout the United States and to the Baltic nations in Eastern Europe. This documentary film journeys with the SFIS Spoken Word Team as the core group (including several graduating twelfth graders) prepares and presents a theater production of their finest poems woven with traditional and contemporary song and dance. The young SFIS poets will enchant your heart and enliven your spirit as they continue the ancient tradition of Native storytelling through the powerful new medium of performance poetry.

Pre-registration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the presentation will be e-mailed to you approximately one week prior to the first session.

Creating, performing, producing, and distributing works of art are fundamental processes for many artist. The choices artists make, the paths they choose, the roadblocks they face shape what is possible and what audiences can encounter. This event attempts to understand how Indigenous artists make these choices, how they practice their creative processes, and how they navigate the networks, institutions, and organizations that shape their disciplines. In a conversation moderated by Department of American Culture Assistant Professor Bethany Hughes (Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma), representatives from an Indigenous film festival in Virginia and an Indigenous theatre company in Michigan will discuss practice, performance, and production through an Indigenous creative lens. Joining the conversation will be Brad Brown (Pamunkey), director of Pocahontas Reframed: Native American Storytellers Film Festival, and Colleen Medicine (Ojibwe Sault Ste. Marie), Executive Director of Anishinaabe Theater Exchange, and Tomantha Sylvester (Ojibwe Sault Ste. Marie), artistic director of Anishinaabe Theater Exchange.

Against long odds, the Anishinaabeg resisted removal, retaining thousands of acres of their homeland in what is now Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Their success rested partly on their roles as sellers of natural resources and buyers of trade goods, which made them key players in the political economy of plunder that drove white settlement and U.S. development in the Old Northwest. But, as Michael Witgen demonstrates, the credit for Native persistence rested with the Anishannabeg themselves. Outnumbering white settlers well into the nineteenth century, they leveraged their political savvy to advance a dual citizenship that enabled mixed-race tribal members to lay claim to a place in U.S. civil society.
