Locally Ensconced and Globally Integrated:How Positions in Network Structure Relate to aLanguage-Based Model of Group Identification (September 22, 2023 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/109978 109978-21823496@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, September 22, 2023 1:30pm

Shifting attachments to social groups are a constant in the modern era. What accounts for variation in the strength of group identification? Whereas prior work has emphasized group-level properties and individual differences, this article instead highlights the role of positions within network structure. Distilling insights from prior work on networks and identity, the authors propose that identification strength is positively related to network cohesion—having contacts who are mutually interconnected. Departing from prevailing accounts, they further propose that identification strength can separately arise through network range—having contacts who inhabit a broad range of network communities. Using the tools of computational linguistics to develop a language-based measure of identification, they find consistent support for the theory using pooled data of internal communications from three disparate organizations.

Sam Schillace has been all over the tech world map and has quite the journey to share at EHour this Friday 10/6. He's been a serial entrepreneur, jumping into all sorts of cool projects, from video games to creating early web page software, word processors, and even application engines. And the best part? He's done it all. He's given us some cool consumer stuff like Box, and he's also delved into the enterprise world.

Remember when Google Docs was a revolutionary idea? Yep, Sam started it. Nowadays, he's all about consumer product culture and next-gen productivity. He's the kind of guy who's always pushing boundaries and asking those "What if?" questions in the ever-changing tech world.

Currently, Sam is a deputy CTO at Microsoft. Here, he's involved in a range of projects, from shaping product culture to infrastructure and AI incubation. He's truly a jack-of-all-trades in the tech world. Seriously, he's like a tech wizard.

And let's not forget his college days. Sam's a true-blue Wolverine, graduating from the University of Michigan specializing in combinatorics, and earned his BS honors in math in just 3.5 years. Oh, and he didn't stop there - he powered through and got his MS in a quick 3 semesters.

You've got a great opportunity to soak up some wisdom from this tech guru. Come hear Sam Schillace share his insight Friday October 6, 11:30am Stamps Auditorium. You don’t want to miss it!

Speaker:
Ewout W. Steyerberg, PhD
Professor of Clinical Biostatistics & Medical Decision Making, Chair, Dept of Biomedical Data Sciences
Leiden University Medical Center, The Netherlands

Clinical prediction models aim to predict a person’s risk of an outcome (e.g. complications, mortality) given their observed characteristics (1). Risk predictions are traditionally derived from regression models. Artificial Intelligence, and specifically Machine Learning methods, are gaining interest to develop predictive algorithms. Predictions from classic models or AI algorithms need to be reliable to provide valid support for tasks such as shared decision making and whether a person should initiate a particular treatment.
The aim of this talk is to review recent developments in prediction model development and validation. Illustrations will be provided from different medical applications. Trustworthiness will be discussed in relation to the statistical aspects -such as sample size and the exceptionality of patients-, model uncertainty, and heterogeneity between contexts of practical application.

Folks from the National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory in Ann Arbor will be giving an overview of the work we do at the National Vehicle Fuels and Emissions Laboratory right here in Ann Arbor, as well as talk about what it's like to work with us, benefits, growth opportunities, and more!

The environmental challenges we face today are urgent. At the Environmental Protection Agency, we need professionals like you to join our diverse team dedicated to safe, clean, and healthy communities for all. Whether it’s tackling the climate crisis or advancing environmental justice, what you do here changes the world. That’s why there has never been a more crucial moment to be one of the scientists, engineers, community leaders, IT specialists, communicators, administrative professionals, technicians, problem solvers, and innovators united in our mission to protect our land, air, water, and people. At our National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory in Ann Arbor, Michigan, we work to help EPA regulate the transportation sector, one of the largest contributors to anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. We provide high-quality research and testing to develop emissions standards that reduce these greenhouse gases so that our work is founded on the latest data. By testing cars, trucks, lawnmowers, boats, etc., and their engines and fuels to ensure they are complying with EPA’s standards, we also make sure that those pollutant standards lead to real-world reductions in greenhouse gases for all Americans and cleaner air for local communities.

Location: Power Center for the Performing Arts
Organized By: TEDxUofM

TEDxUofM’s 15th annual conference is all about the theme “Golden Ratio”. First discovered in 300 BCE, the golden ratio has been a mathematical distillation of beauty for centuries. Not only has it been embraced by artists, appearing in famous works like the Mona Lisa and Parthenon, the golden radio has been ever-present in the natural world, from the smallest flower to the largest spiral galaxy. Our speakers’ talks will encourage our audience to slow down and see the inherent splendor around them amidst a modern, fast-paced world. With our first speaker headliner confirmed for the year, TEDxUofM is curating a lineup of thought leaders committed to sparking game-changing conversations.

During the conference, you will have the opportunity to listen to world-renowned UofM and Ann Arbor members who are immensely successful in their fields. They will share their "ideas worth spreading" in their TEDxUofM talks and you have the opportunity after the conference to potentially meet or network with them.

There will also be lab activities before and during intermission that you will interact with. In the past, we have had activities such as a Partnership Lab between Google and TEDxUofM, where attendees had the opportunity to try Google's Cardboard VR headsets, and another year, we had a lab where attendees got to make their own perfume scents.

We’re excited to be featuring 7 amazing speakers this year! Here’s some more information:

Carhartt’s VP of Global Product Design, Ben Ewy- Empathetic Design is Sustainable Design 🌀🌱🎨
A University of Michigan Athletic Trainer, Claire Coates- The Bane and Beauty of Athletic Injury 💪🩹⚖️
The Deputy Director of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, Daniel Högsta- The Myth of Nuclear Weapons: Stories that Shine Through the Mushroom Cloud 🕊️🌍🏆
A University of Michigan English professor, Noha Beydoun- The Personal Path to Anti-Racism 📚🌐🤝
The former New Yorker Cartoon Editor, Robert Mankoff- AI & Comedy 📰🖥️🤣
A distinguished MSNBC / NBC News Anchor, filmmaker, and author, Richard Lui- Selflessness Post Covid and Taking Care of Others 🎬📖🤝
A Tony Award-winning actress and end-of-life doula, Celia Keenan-Bolger- Embracing Mortality to Enrich Life 🎭💀🧘

Stay tuned for fabulous performing groups and entertainers, as well as inspiring lab activities! Also, look forward to our goodie bags being given out to all attendees! 🎁

Finding Fulfillment in Federal Service (February 16, 2024 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/118626 118626-21841310@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 16, 2024 12:00pm
Location: LSA Building
Organized By: LSA Opportunity Hub

Calling all future public servants!

Wondering what it's like to work for the federal government?
Inspired to use your skills and knowledge to make a real impact on national security?

Join us for an Alum in Residence with Mark Nehmer to find out what he’s discovered truly differentiates working for the federal government from working in the private sector, and why for him federal service was the far better fit. A native of Croswell, Michigan, Mark graduated from LSA in 1980 with majors in Economics and History. Upon graduation, he relocated to St. Louis, Missouri where he completed his Master of Business Administration from Fontbonne University with a dual concentration in Finance and Information Systems. Acknowledging the lack of job satisfaction after nearly 30 years working in the private sector, Mark made the bold decision to pivot, accepting the opportunity to help stand up United States Cyber Command (USCYBERCOM) as its first Division Chief for Cyber Risk Management, responsible for the analysis of current and future DoD and Federal risk management and C4 (command, control, communications, and computer/cyber) direction for USCYBERCOM and DoD leadership teams.

Mark’s federal career has been a robust journey of building infrastructure for novel governmental management of emerging national threats and then leading in those nascent spaces. Mark joined the Defense Counterintelligence and Security Agency (DCSA) to manage standup activities for the Cyber-Counterintelligence division in 2013. He was a founding member responsible for projects and initiatives related to the establishment of the Defense Insider Threat Management and Analysis Center (DITMAC) in 2014. He did the same for the Defense Vetting Directorate and Program Executive Office (PEO) in 2018. As the first Technical Director of the PEO, Mark oversaw the incorporation and advancement in integration of innovative technologies, including practical applications of artificial intelligence. Now as Advisor of Technical Strategy for the PEO, Mr. Nehmer is responsible for the development and evolution of technical capabilities within the DCSA.

Mark’s work is not limited to the typical notions of national defense that the media and entertainment industries tend to draw attention to. In the advancement of stress and risk assessment technology, the development of artificial intelligence and its implementation in DCSA is further being evaluated for identifying those within the military and civilian populations who may be at risk of harming themselves. Mr. Nehmer is proud that his contributions in utilization of these evolving technologies will not only bolster national security, but will impact and save millions of lives, such as through pre-crisis intervention and suicide prevention.

Make an appointment or drop by the Opportunity Hub to meet with Mark on Friday, February 16 from 12pm to 3pm. In recent years, the landscape of vehicular technology has undergone a significant transformation, driven by extensive research and development efforts in connected and automated vehicle (CAV) technologies. This surge in innovation is not just a fleeting trend; it forecasts a future, within the next 10 to 20 years, where our roads will be a blend of autonomous vehicles and traditional vehicles operated by human drivers. The seamless integration of these autonomous vehicles into our daily commutes hinges on a multifaceted approach. It necessitates the harmonization of CAV technologies with existing systems, including traffic control mechanisms, roadway maintenance protocols, and driver education and training. This integrative effort is pivotal in enhancing the applicability and reliability of CAV technologies in the current traffic ecosystem.

This research review highlights a series of initiatives undertaken in recent years by the University of Akron’s researchers. These projects focus on a diverse set of topics: intersection control in mixed traffic conditions, control of CAV fleet formations under various roadway and vehicle conditions, strategies for safe gap selection tailored for older drivers, and educational programs for senior citizens aimed at fostering understanding and acceptance of CAV technologies. Each project’s objectives and research methodology are discussed, followed by an analysis of the results. This analysis assists in evaluating the effectiveness of these initiatives and underscores the benefits of integrating CAV technologies into the current transportation system.

Inside the Mutli-Machine Maneuver Transaction: Implications of Trust, Fault, and Machine Reputation (March 14, 2024 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/118923 118923-21841894@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 14, 2024 2:00pm
Location: Transportation Research Institute
Organized By: Center for Connected and Automated Transportation

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) are often portrayed charting an inevitable pathway towards transformative roadway system efficiency and safety. However, current AVs are designed to operate within (and limited by) a legacy system of laws, liabilities, licensing, taxation, control systems and normative behaviors built on the assumption that vehicles will have human drivers. In other words, even if an AV may be able to go faster, corner more tightly or safely maneuver around obstacles with a margin of error much smaller than human drivers, they must remain restricted, for now, to maneuvers expected from a human-driven vehicle for two key reasons. First, deviation from legacy norms would disrupt nearby human drivers; second, current AVs are simply not ready to self-organize outside our legacy system. By default, then, in the near-term we must rely on the speed limits, lane lines, stop signals and other rules of the road we have developed in a broadly ad hoc fashion in 100+ years of human-driven automobility. But once we have millions of AVs in motion at the same time and AVs are the norm not the exception, are the legacy forms of general self-organization that compensate for the limitations of human drivers still practical, or even desirable?

Dr. Karl Wunderlich, Director of the Surface Transportation Systems Division at Noblis, will join the first CCAT Distinguished Lecture of 2024 to discuss Noblis’ proposed broader ecosystem that includes transaction and trust management which is built on a decentralized distributed ledger solution. A reputational trust report for all vehicles is managed externally by a consortium of entities facilitating the ecosystem’s transactions. Value distribution in such a system may consider all parties facilitating aspects of the transaction, including yielding priority, providing, and maintaining the maneuver space, providing maneuver and sensor verification reports, providing reliable position and timing data, managing trust reports and recording transactions. Noblis is currently conducting research to examine the viability of such a system and its potential to address long-standing issues in equitable roadway system financial sustainability.
---
About the speaker: Dr. Wunderlich is the Director of the Surface Transportation Division at Noblis, a not-for-profit system engineering and strategic planning firm. He also serves the Director of the Noblis Autonomous Systems Research Center in Reston, VA. Dr. Wunderlich is an expert in the use of simulation techniques to evaluate the potential impact of emerging technologies to improve shared infrastructure system efficiency and productivity –including vehicle connectivity and cooperative autonomy. He is a published author and patent-holder in orchestrated autonomy, which leverages distributed ledger technologies to create efficient, collision-free path plans involving heterogenous, unfamiliar, and autonomous machines. Dr. Wunderlich has led over three dozen federal R&D research projects and is an author or co-author of more than 50 publications and federal guidance documents, including the 2019 Update to the FHWA Traffic Analysis Tools Volume III: Guide on Micro-Simulation. Dr. Wunderlich holds a Ph.D. in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan (1994).

Our goal is to answer the questions of how to effectively partner with others in order to maximize the impact of advocacy work.
The community networking fair is comprised of different system-impacted advocacy organizations with unique mission focus.
Whether you're practicing in the field or new to the work, the Art of Relational Advocacy Collaborative Conference offers the space to hold open and honest community conversations.

Understanding Working Women’s Lives: An Exploration of Postpartum Allyship in Organizations (March 22, 2024 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/116544 116544-21837560@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 22, 2024 1:30pm
Location: Ross School of Business
Organized By: Interdisciplinary Committee on Organizational Studies - ICOS

Many women experience psychological and emotional challenges during their transition to becoming a working mother, making the reentry process after parental leave crucial for helping women thrive at work and at home. Within this talk, I will provide an overview of past scholarship I have conducted in this area on breastfeeding in the workplace and postpartum depression. Then, I will discuss our research on postpartum allyship—specific behaviors that coworkers and managers can enact to support and advocate for working mothers during their reentry process postpartum. To do so, I will highlight findings from three complementary studies. In Study 1, we adopted a qualitative approach to gain insight into the forms of allyship working mothers found valuable. We then build upon these findings in Study 2 by developing and validating a scale of postpartum allyship. Finally, in Study 3, integrating emergent themes from our qualitative data with tenets of the social cognitive model of career self-management (Lent & Brown, 2013, 2019), we use our newly-developed measure in a time-lagged study focused on the cognitive, affective, and behavioral impact of postpartum mothers’ experiences of allyship. Results indicated that postpartum allyship experiences bolster work-motherhood self- efficacy and reduce guilt which, in turn, yield important implications for working mothers’ turnover intentions, work-family capital, and postpartum depressive symptoms. Across these papers, I aim to bring theoretical and practical attention to how to best support working mothers.

How to Boom, Not Bust: An Alum Connection Exploring Haseeb Mahmood’s Journey at Dell Technologies Entering and Thriving in Today’s Tech Industry Climate (April 8, 2024 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/120713 120713-21845165@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, April 8, 2024 12:00pm
Location: LSA Building
Organized By: LSA Opportunity Hub

Tech sales and the tech industry always seem to be a hot conversation, but you may find yourself wondering if the degree you’ve chosen fits into the world of tech.

Biology major? Haseeb will tell you that fits just fine.

Communications major? Haseeb says “that’ll totally work.”

Perhaps you’re a Computer Science major but want to focus on the sales side?

Of course you can do that.

What about Cognitive Science, you say?

Well, that’s one major Haseeb can personally attest to being at home in the world of tech. Haseeb Mahmood is an LSA graduate who majored in Cognitive Science (‘22) and currently works in Tech sales — a field and profession he wasn't even aware he wanted to pursue until his senior year. After all, you only get paid when you make a sale, or don’t you? (short-answer absolutely not, but you won’t believe how many people Haseeb’s met who believed this was the case). Haseeb's excited to answer your questions regarding the world of tech, tech sales, how to apply your degree, dealing with imposter syndrome, and maybe even tell you what it’s like having a peek behind the curtain of the AI boom. So join us for lunch as we discuss these topics and many more!

About Haseeb:
Haseeb's currently a Data Protection Specialist at Dell Technologies, residing in Austin, Texas. A Cognitive Science major with a Cappo Sales Track certification, his personal blend of Michigan education gave him all the appropriate tools for a field and a profession that doesn't have a specific degree or path for how to get started in it. Haseeb's also a Michigan and Lions Football fan, and he had to work overtime to defend the Wolverines against the naysayers in his office on the historic run to the National Title. He's also a big soccer fan (F.C. Barcelona), enjoys motorsports, and is an avid seeker of live music and comedy. You can find him on any given weekend exploring new food spots in Austin, ever continuing to experience how incredible Austin is, humbly conceding how brutally wrong his initial perception of the city truly was.

Join us for this networking opportunity with Haseeb! Lunch will be provided at event.

If you are a U-M researcher looking to learn more about when, why, and how to integrate Generative AI tools into your research, join us for our upcoming sessions. We cover topics ranging from administrative tasks, literature review and synthesis, data analysis, and writing and presentations. No prior experience with Generative AI tools is required. Participants will need to supply their own laptop for each session.

Location: all sessions will be held in-person. We are not able to offer live-streaming for this series. Recordings and materials will be posted to the event page after each session.
